A young expectant mother allegedly took her own life after being publicly accused of carrying another man’s child. Her husband and mother-in-law have been arrested as police investigate the tragic case.
A 23-year-old pregnant woman in India allegedly died by suicide after her husband repeatedly questioned the paternity of her unborn child and demanded a DNA test.
G Sushmita, who was five months pregnant, was found dead at her home in Telangana on 25 June. Police have since arrested her husband, G Abhilash, and his mother, who have been remanded in judicial custody.
According to a police complaint filed by Sushmita’s mother, the young woman endured ongoing physical and emotional abuse throughout her marriage. During a family meeting to discuss her baby shower, her husband allegedly demanded a DNA test for the unborn child in front of both families, leaving her deeply humiliated.
Her family claims the accusation severely affected her mental health, and two days later she was found dead at her home.
Police have registered a case alleging cruelty by a husband or relatives and abetment of suicide. An investigation is ongoing.
