Donald Trump is sending $500 checks to one million Americans across 30 states, just weeks before the 2026 midterm elections.
The payments are aimed at Americans enrolled in Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) through HealthCare.gov who do not receive government subsidies for their health insurance. Some households could receive more than one check because the payment is made per person.
The Trump administration says the money comes from excess funds collected through Obamacare-related fees. Trump has also used the announcement to criticize former President Joe Biden, claiming his administration allowed Americans to be overcharged.
However, the timing has raised questions. With Trump’s approval ratings under pressure and the November 2026 midterm elections approaching, critics may see the payments as politically motivated.
Trump has also promised a $5,000 dividend for every American if Republicans maintain their majority in Congress.
