A bizarre early-morning adventure could have ended in tragedy after two toddlers were found alone at a German train station.
At around 6 a.m. on Saturday, passengers at Rülzheim station in Rhineland-Palatinate were stunned to discover a 2-year-old girl and her 3-year-old brother standing alone on the platform. The children were wearing nothing but diapers and wrapped in a blanket.
Concerned witnesses immediately alerted police. Officers arrived and took the two children into their care, gently asking them why they had left home so early.
According to German newspaper Bild, the toddlers gave a remarkably simple explanation: they had left home to “buy new shoes.”
They Slipped Out While Their Parents Were Sleeping
Initial findings suggest the siblings managed to leave their room and unlock the front door while their parents were still fast asleep.
Investigators are now trying to determine exactly how the two toddlers made their way from their home to the train station.
Thankfully, the unusual adventure ended safely. Police checked the children and confirmed that they were in good health before taking them back to their parents.
Authorities have also notified child-protection services, which will carry out the necessary checks surrounding the incident.
