“My husband stays faithful while I date others” — Woman opens up about her one-sided open marriage

A woman in a mono-poly marriage — where the husband remains faithful while the wife is free to have multiple partners — has shared details about their unconventional relationship.

Karla Houston, 34, has been married for nine years and says she openly explores relationships with other people while her husband chooses to remain monogamous.

The California-based couple adopted the one-sided open relationship dynamic, known as a mono-poly relationship, in 2022 after what Houston described as “honest conversations, self-reflection, and learning what felt authentic” for both of them.

“My husband is monogamous and I’m polyamorous, and we’ve had to build a dynamic that honors that difference,” she told The Post.

Houston, who identifies as bisexual and says she has always practiced polyamory, explained that she connects strongly with the idea of “relationship anarchy,” where relationships are defined by the people involved rather than traditional expectations.

According to her, the arrangement works because it is built on trust, honesty, and open communication.

She admitted that jealousy can sometimes arise but said both partners address such feelings through discussions instead of avoidance.

“Those feelings are usually worked through with communication rather than avoidance,” she said.

Houston also argued that society often reacts more harshly to women exploring non-monogamy than men.

“There’s often a double standard where men having multiple partners is normalized or even celebrated in some spaces, while women who openly explore their sexuality or non-monogamy are judged much more harshly,” she explained.

She stressed that their relationship is consensual and not based on control or secrecy.

“My husband is not controlling me, and I’m not hiding who I am to preserve a traditional image of marriage. We’ve built relationships based on choice, trust, and honesty rather than rigid gender roles,” Houston added.

Relationship experts say mono-poly relationships fall under consensual non-monogamy, though the unequal dynamic often surprises people outside polyamorous communities.

Ruby Rare, an intimacy director for the dating app Feeld, noted that societal expectations still place stricter standards on women when it comes to monogamy and sexual freedom.
