Police Bust Self-Kidnap Plot, Arrest ESUT Student and Accomplice Over N10m Ransom Demand

AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE – The Anambra State Police Command has successfully foiled a self-orchestrated kidnapping and extortion attempt, arresting two suspects implicated in the elaborate scheme to defraud a family of N10 million.

The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Chinecherem Okonkwo (female), a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), and 30-year-old Chinecherem Aronu (male), were apprehended for masterminding their own ‘abduction’ and demanding a hefty ransom.

This development was disclosed in a press statement released on Monday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), acting on intelligence following a disturbing report of an alleged abduction of a female student, launched an investigation that led to the suspects’ arrest.

“The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects involved in a self-orchestrated kidnap incident designed to extort money from the victim’s own family,” SP Ikenga stated.

He further elaborated that the duo, Okonkwo and Aronu, allegedly faked Okonkwo’s kidnapping and subsequently used an “unknown voice” to contact her family, demanding a ransom of N10 million for her release.

The intelligence-led operation by the Rapid Response Squad led officers to a lodge located at UNIZIK Temp Site, Awka. There, Chinecherem Okonkwo was found alive and in the company of her male accomplice, Chinecherem Aronu.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged to court once the police conclude their findings.Edit
