Pfizer recalls drugs containing cancer-causing chemical

Three blood pressure medications manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer have been recalled after a potential cancer-causing chemical compound was discovered in them.

Several “tainted” lots of Accuretic and two authorized generic versions of the drug were found to have elevated levels of nitrosamine above the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) set by US regulators.

While everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines, these “impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time,” Pfizer said in a statement.
