Kano explosion: Kano Police lied – resident insists

A resident of Kano, who identified himself as Mr. Emmanuel Orakwe, has disclaimed the report making rounds that the explosion which took place at Aba Road in Kano on Tuesday was from a gas cylinder.

It could be recalled that News Band reported how an explosion had hit a school at Badawa Layout in the Sabon Gari area of Kano with school children as casualties.

The Kano State Police Commissioner, Sama’ila Dikko, while confirming the incident, said that the blast was from gas cylinder explosion and not a bomb explosion as generally reported.

The force of the explosion at the base of the building had brought down the whole building accommodating a school leading to casualties.

Police Commissioner Dikko, who visited the scene of the explosion and spoke with BBC Hausa, stressed that it was a gas cylinder explosion and not a bomb blast, that affected a primary school with several casualties recorded.

He notified the general public in Kano that the reported loud explosion at Badawa Layout is as a result of cooking gas explosion at a building, and not a security threat.

He assured that security agencies, particularly the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) were on ground and there is no cause for panic.

Reacting, Mr. Orakwe stated that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber who drove in with a Honda car and detonated the bomb.

According to Orakwe, the blast caused extensive damages and caused the death of over a dozen kids in the area dominated by Igbo business men.

Other eyewitnesses confirmed that they saw a suicide bomber who detonated explosives  that brought down the building and left devastation in its wake.
