Eight Days After Her Husband’s Death, Widow Locked Out as In-Laws Allegedly Move to Seize Property

What should have been a period of mourning has turned into a nightmare for 28-year-old Tosin, a young Nigerian widow who says she is now fighting for her home, her children’s future, and her safety—just eight days after losing her husband.

The heartbreaking case, which has gone viral on social media, was brought to public attention by activist Harrison Gwamnishu. In a widely shared video, Tosin’s father-in-law is seen padlocking the family home, allegedly locking the grieving widow outside while she is still mourning.

According to Gwamnishu, Tosin’s husband passed away on July 20, 2026. Shortly after his death, members of his family reportedly moved into the deceased’s home in Ikorodu, Lagos, and allegedly ordered Tosin to squeeze all her belongings and those of her two young sons into a single room. He further claimed that some of the late man’s personal belongings had already been shared among relatives, while plans were underway to sell his car.

The activist condemned the family’s actions, saying they appeared more interested in the deceased’s property than the welfare of the two children he left behind. He also revealed that Tosin has allegedly been threatened for speaking out about her ordeal.

The story sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for justice and an end to the age-old practice of widows being harassed or dispossessed after the death of their husbands.

Reacting to the viral reports, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed that it had contacted Tosin after she reported alleged threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation. The agency said the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division and that it immediately began working with investigators.

According to the agency, the alleged perpetrator has since been arrested and remains in police custody while investigations continue.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Tosin and her two children and ensuring that justice is served. Authorities also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of domestic violence, intimidation, and unlawful dispossession through the appropriate channels.

For many Nigerians, Tosin’s story is yet another painful reminder that no widow should have to battle for dignity, shelter, or her children’s inheritance while still grieving the loss of her husband.
