“They make millions whilst I can’t afford for gas” – Kardashian-Jenner Apps developper

Jessica DeFino, a former employee for the now-defunct Kardashian-Jenner official apps has served a blunt response to Kim Kardashian’s infamous “get your f – -king ass up and work” career advice.

Jessica DeFino documented her experience working as an assistant editor on the Kardashian-Jenner Official Apps between 2015 and 2016 in an explosive tell-all.

Recalling her time working for the billionaire family to VICE, the writer claims that despite American’s most famous family possessing unimaginable wealth, she was paid just $35,000 per year.

She stated that her wages were “low and laughable in LA, especially considering my experience”, explaining how after tax, she would take home just enough to cover rent and utility bills.

32-year-old DeFino first blasted the reality show royals back in March after Kim Kardashian boldly declared: “I have the best advice for women in business.”

“Get your f – – king ass up and work,” Kardashian said. “It seems like nobody wants to work these days,” she added in the now-viral video shared by Variety, which was subsequently mocked online. DeFino was one of the women who chastised the superstar for her tone-deaf comments.

In a Twitter post published March 9, the writer wrote;

“I was an editor on the Kardashian apps in 2015 in LA.

“I worked days nights & weekends, could only afford groceries from the 99 Cents Only Store, called out ‘sick’ more than once bc I couldn’t put gas in my car to get to the office, & was reprimanded for freelancing on the side.”

The scathing tweet quickly went viral, racking up more than 600,000 likes. Now, in a scathing new piece — titled “I Worked My Ass Off for the Kardashian-Jenner Apps. I Couldn’t Afford Gas” — for Vice, DeFino elaborates on her experience, and has spoken with other employees of a Kardashian enterprise who similarly claim they were overworked and underpaid.

DeFino was an employee of Whalerock Industries, the digital media company the Kardashian-Jenner clan brought on in May 2015 to create their apps. Each sister launched an app featuring exclusive content for paying subscribers, with the venture reportedly netting them millions of dollars before they shut down in 2019.

Jessica wrote in VICE;

“When I read Kardashian’s original quote about women not working hard, I thought of the labor I put into launching the Kardashian Jenner Official Apps—days, nights, holidays, weekends, whenever and wherever I was needed.

“I wasn’t alone. I spoke to two former employees who worked on the apps and two former employees of KKW Beauty, Kim Kardashian’s cosmetics line, all of whom described an environment of overwork at the expense of their mental and sometimes physical health, as well as their career advancement.”

DeFino who declared in the piece that she made an annual salary of $35,000, added that she ended up with just over $600 per week in her bank account after taxes. The amount barely covered the costs of food, rent, bills and gas.

In the article, DeFino recalls one time where she could only afford to put $4 worth of gas in her car, which wasn’t enough to get her from the office to her home.

“I panicked, slapped at the steering wheel, and screamed. And then I cried,” she wrote of the traumatic experience, which took place back in 2015.

DeFino doesn’t hold back from blasting the work culture at Whalerock, saying she was “called into a manager’s office and reprimanded” after higher-ups found out she was writing freelance articles on the side in order to supplement her meager income.

She also alleges that staffers confronted her when they found out she was applying for other jobs.

“The company seemed to be surveilling all possible paths to a liveable income, from freelancing to finding a new job. I felt manipulated and monitored, paranoid and trapped,” DeFino wrote in the piece.

Elsewhere in her explosive tell-all, Jessica recalls being awarded a free sample of Crème de la Mer after winning Employee of The Week on one occasion.

Jennifer Chan, who joined the Kardashian-Jenner apps as a senior editor in July 2015, also shares her experience in the article, claiming she once had to spend the night in the office ahead of the apps launching at 3am in September 2015.

She said;

“We had to sleep overnight [in the office] to make sure. I think it was a Sunday, too. We just spent the night.”

The publication also states “the sisters were likely unaware of what the people behind their apps were paid.”

One of the Vice interviewees  who did not wish to use her real name stated: “I worked all the time. I did not sleep enough. I was drinking alcohol — way too much alcohol — to deal with the stress. I became physically unwell. My hair was falling out.”

DeFino also alleges she suffered health issues due to work and financial stress at Whalerock, saying she fell into a “deep depression.”

She eventually left the company in 2016 after working there for one year and three months. The Kardashian-Jenner apps eventually shuttered in 2019.

Two other women who previously worked for Kim Kardashian’s cosmetics brand, KKW Beauty, say they experienced similar levels of overwork and underpay. One of the employee claimed that the Kardashian-Jenners viewed themselves as “the royal family of America” and thought that employees would “take any pay” to work with the

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson recently stepped out for a double date with Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, in Los Angeles.

The date night took place on April 10 at the A.O.C restaurant in West Hollywood.

According to an eyewitness, Kim and Pete looked more smitten than ever.

US Police is searching for the man behind the NYC shooting which left 10 people with gunshot wounds

A 62-year-old man has been named as a person of interest in the attack which left 10 people with gunshot wounds, with police offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Frank James reportedly posted hundreds of unhinged and bigoted videos on his YouTube channel ranting about ‘killing everything in site’ and slamming New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the city’s homelessness crisis, and unsafe subways.

Police said keys found at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park belong to a U-Haul truck in Brooklyn that was rented by James and found abandoned five miles from the scene in Brooklyn.

Authorities are now examining social media videos in which James made ‘concerning’ threats against Mayor Adams and raged against white people, Puerto Ricans, Jewish people, climate change and the police, whilst also decrying the United States as a racist place awash in violence. Officials have since tightened security for Adams.

‘This nation was born in violence, it’s kept alive by violence or the threat thereof and it’s going to die a violent death. There’s nothing going to stop that,’ James said in a ranting video on YouTube under the name ‘Prophet of Truth88’.

The rambling, profanity-filled YouTube videos posted by James, who is black, are replete with violent language and bigoted comments, sometimes against other black people. He is also featured sharing conspiracy theories – such as claiming that the Twin Towers could never have been brought down on 9/11 by planes.

One video, posted April 11, criticizes crime against black people and says drastic action is needed.

‘You got kids going in here now taking machine guns and mowing down innocent people,’ James says. ‘It’s not going to get better until we make it better,’ he said, adding that he thought things would only change if certain people were ‘stomped, kicked and tortured’ out of their ‘comfort zone.’

Several of James’ videos mention New York’s subway. One, posted on February 20, says the mayor and governor’s plan to address homelessness and safety in the subway system ‘is doomed for failure’ whilst another on January 25 criticizes Adams’ plan to end gun violence.

James references psychiatric facilities he has attended in the Bronx and in New Jersey, saying the staff failed to help him and ‘made me more dangerous’.

‘Mr. Mayor, I’m a victim of your mental health program,’ James said in one lengthy video.

‘I’m 63 now full of hate, full of anger, and full of bitterness.’

He also criticized the mayor for not doing more to combat homelessness.

Man, 62, named as person of interest in NYC shooting which left 10 people with gunshot wounds

‘Eric Adams, Eric Adams: What are you doing brother? What’s happening with this homeless situation,’ he said while referring to the subway.

‘Every car I went to was loaded with homeless people. It was so bad I couldn’t even stand. I had to keep moving from car to car.’

He continued: ‘He can’t stop no crime in no subways. He may slow it down but he ain’t stopping it.’

‘That means you’d have to have police in every station and that’s just not possible,’ he added.

The NYPD said they were increasing security for Adams after police discovered the videos.

His most recent video was posted the day before the attack, entitled: ‘Domesticated Averages’, and featured clips of black men in court, accompanied by James’s monologue.

He warns young people not to get caught up in violence, saying:

‘This is why it’s important to think about what you’re going to do before you do it.

‘Let’s not forget, I’ve been through a lot of s*** where I could say I wanted to kill people.

‘I wonder why people die right in front of my f****** face immediately.

‘But I thought about the fact that, hey man, I don’t want to go no f****** prison – f*** that.’

He also ranted about racism in society.

‘The main thing about the story of black people in this country is that there’s nothing f****** over here,’ he said.

‘The emancipation approximation didn’t stop f******. The civil rights movement didn’t stop a f****** thing.

‘This train is still moving and it’s moving in directions just gonna take you to your f****** death.’

In another video, on March 1, he railed against police brutality and societal racism.

‘Oh no, your son shouldn’t have his f****** black brains blown out by racist cop,’ he says.

‘No, that shouldn’t happen.

‘No, you shouldn’t be denied housing in a white neighborhood.

‘No, that should not happen.

‘You shouldn’t be lynched, you black son of a b****.’

Man, 62, named as person of interest in NYC shooting which left 10 people with gunshot wounds

He emphasized his PTSD multiple times, without detailing what caused it, and raged against the staff of Bridgeway Behavioral Health Services – a psychiatric care facility in New Jersey.

James showed the faces of the staff and managers on the screen behind him, saying: ‘these are the people that was supposed to be helping me. They made me worse.’

He added: ‘They f****** made me worse.

‘They made me more dangerous than I could ever have been.’

James also referenced mental health facilities in the Bronx.

He mocked Adams’s plan to bring in mental health workers to deal with the subway homeless problem.

‘Here’s the help. Here’s the cavalry, Eric Adams,’ he said, referencing the New Jersey social workers pictured behind him.

‘A bunch of f****** predators, a bunch of deviants, a bunch of psychopaths and sociopaths.

‘They’re gonna help you, Eric.’

James also said he was discriminated against because he was not gay. ‘They’re all homosexual and whatever they have at Bridgeway is a homosexual thing,’ he said. ‘If you’re not homosexual you’re not welcome in Bridgeway.’

James said he ‘was a nice person’ previously. ‘Remember, I was a nice person. I wanted to help people. Now I’m wanting to kill everything in sight. I was planning to kill everything I saw based on how I was treated by these.’

He then ranted about climate change.

‘The planet is reconfiguring,’ he said, referencing desertification and oceans rising, wiping out arable land.

He talked at length about Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, saying that Putin was going to unleash nuclear weapons on the world and kill everyone.

He also claimed the Russian invasion of Ukraine was proof that black people were treated with disdain in society.

‘These white motherf******, this is what they do,’ he said.

‘Ultimately at the end of the day they kill and commit genocide against each other. What do you think they gonna do to your black ass?’

And he said the war in Ukraine was a prelude to race war.

‘It’s just a matter of time before these white motherf****** decide, ‘Hey listen. Enough is enough. These n****** got to go,” he said.

The only options James could find, he claimed, was to commit more violence or become a criminal.

‘And so the message to me is: I should have gotten a gun, and just started shooting mother*******,’ he said.

Police are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to James’s arrest. The MTA and Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 100 both offered $12,500 each in reward money and the New York City Police Foundation offered $25,000 in reward money to bring the total reward offering to $50,000.

Criminals still enforcing the ‘sit-at-home’ order

The Enugu police command, on Monday, said an unidentified male traveller was killed after gunmen attacked a Sienna vehicle in the state.

Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson of the Enugu police command, confirmed the development to NAN.

The male traveller was said to have boarded the vehicle, which was heading to Onitsha in Anambra in the early hours of Monday at the Holy Ghost roundabout axis of Enugu metropolis.

“Yet-to-be identified miscreants, operating in a mini-bus, shot an unidentified male traveler and in the process torched a Sienna vehicle around Holy Ghost Roundabout axis in the early morning hours of today,” Ndukwe said.

“The victim was immediately moved to the hospital for treatment by police operatives, who responded to a distress call on the incident.

“He, however, was later confirmed dead by doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

“The said area, including other parts of the state, remains relatively peaceful.”

The spokesman added that a manhunt for the assailants had been launched.

There have been several attacks across states in the south-east in recent months, leading to killings and destruction of property.

Although the Indigenous People of Biafra has been accused by security agencies of being behind the attacks following the declaration and subsequent cancellation of a sit-at-home order in honour of Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, the group has maintained that it has no hand in the violence.

Peace talks with Ukraine at ‘dead end’ – Putin says

Russian leader, Vladimir Putin has stated that peace talks with Ukraine is ‘dead’

According to Putin, without a deal acceptable to Russia, his forces would continue their offensive against Ukraine .

Putin’s statement on Tuesday, April 12 comes as Russian forces bombarded Ukrainian military positions and residential areas in the country’s east and unleashed new rocket attacks.

In his first comments on the war in almost a month, Putin said that peace talks had stalled after what he called a “fake” situation in Bucha, a town outside of Kyiv where Ukrainian officials reported the discovery of several hundred dead civilians this month after Russian troops retreated.

Ukrainian and Western officials are pursuing investigations into potential war crimes committed in Bucha and in other formerly Russian-held towns in northern Ukraine before Moscow’s withdrawal at the end of March.

Ukrainian authorities are also investigating allegations by Ukrainian forces that they came under a Russian chemical attack in Mariupol, where Russia is still fighting to consolidate gains.

Putin also said Ukrainian negotiators had “deviated from agreements” reached in Istanbul.

Ukraine last month presented its proposal for a neutral status and international security guarantees, but the two sides involved in the conflict – Ukraine and Russia, haven’t moved closer toward a potential cease-fire.

“We have again returned to a dead-end situation,” Putin said.

“Inconsistency about essential matters has been creating well-known difficulties in achieving final agreements on the negotiating track which would be acceptable to us. Unless that happens, the military operation will continue until it concludes and the objectives set at the beginning of this operation are achieved.”

Putin said the main goal of the offensive was “to help people in Donbas,” in another sign that his forces would launch an assault on the eastern region. He added that “there is no doubt” the goal will be achieved, speaking during a visit to the Vostochny Cosmodrome, a Russian spaceport in the country’s Far East, along with his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Tuesday that high-precision air- and sea-based missiles launched overnight destroyed an ammunition depot and a hangar with Ukrainian aircraft at the Starokostiantyniv military airfield in the western Khmelnytskyi region, as well as an ammunition depot near Havrylivka in the Kyiv region.

“When will Nigerian woman be safe from abuse ?” – by Shiloh Akinyemi

It seems that in the midst of anguish and gnashing of teeth, Kemi Olunloyo, a blogger who cares less about emotions while plying her trade for profit, constantly enjoys choosing a perspective that not only tramples upon the grave of the dead, but also burdens the family and friends (Frank Edwards in this case) of the deceased for the rest of their life.

She claims Frank Edwards has been sleeping with Late Evangelist Osinachi Nwachukwu. Oluloyo as we all know, will always have her own twist to every story.

Look at the case of #JusticeforSylvesterOmoruyi for example. After reading her twist to the story, I couldn’t help but wonder. If she had lost her empathy as a mother in Sylvester’s case, did she also lose her identity as a woman in this case? Or like Bobrisky, is she also on a mind confusion adventure?

Hearing about the death of this gifted singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, was a shocker, but the cause of her death wasn’t in the least surprising.

Osinachi Nwachukwu
Late Osinachi Nwachukwu

I see everywhere on social media that almost everyone has an opinion to share, ranging from the late singer being stuck in an abusive marriage, to the role the church had to play in keeping her in an abusive marriage.

It constantly amazes me how people of the world are quick to point fingers at the church, someone must be blamed and obviously, it should be the church. Now had the scenario been different and Osinachi opted for a separation or a divorce, these people would still have taken to social media to talk about how Christian marriages are a sham and the likes.

Recently, these social media armies against the church had Charlie Boy who has been married for 40 years applauded while denigrating Pastor Chris Okotie and Pastor Chris Oyakilome. But Charlie is “better” than the church and the world in that there is no hypocrisy in him.

On his 40th wedding anniversary, he had this to say. “My 40 year old marriage has been a living hell many times”!

Keep in mind that the Church in itself is not the building, but humans who are committed to serving Christ. Perhaps, speaking out like Charlie may be all that is needed to have better marriages, for secrecy often times is the strength of abusers.

Now the best these humans can do is to offer advice and guidance. In the end, the decision is ours to make. Christ gave us the power of choice, which after over two thousand years is still constant.
We can only wonder what Osinachi thought was worth her life, but the sad truth remains she had a choice and she made her decision.

Now the ones who love her are left to deal with the pain of the choices she made.

But since the world needs something to talk about, let’s look at the rate of abuse and how much of a norm it has become.

Remember Bamise? The beautiful young lady who was ABUSED then brutally murdered in a #BRT in Lagos?

Ooh you think it’s just a coincidence?

Young Bamise murdered in BRT in Lagos
Young Bamise murdered in BRT in Lagos

How about our very famous Remi Tinubu? “Mother of modern Lagos” like her political fans will yell!

In July 2016, Senator Dino Melaye stood on the ground of the hallowed Red Chambers of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to insult her, using vulgar words I’d rather not write for the sake of my readers who are minors.

Well, you all thought Remi deserved it. And hailed your Abuser in the Senate for a job well done! That day, the dignity of the Nigerian woman, wife, and mother was caricatured before the watching world.

For whatever reason, the world didn’t deem it fit for Dino Melaye to apologize to a woman. Days after, he marched on Bourdillon with pride to trample on the consciences of a nation who wouldn’t stand up for her women.

Oh, you felt it was for Asiwaju to defend his wife? No! Nigerians own the Senate where Remi was verbally and emotionally abused and not her husband.

We failed Remi, Bamise and now Osinachi!

Senator Oluremi Tinubu
Senator Oluremi Tinubu

The truth is every woman in Nigeria is open to abuse, especially from the male gender, and we have been told countless times to stay put and deal with it.

They are men, they would flex muscles… We are women, we should be understanding.

Don’t provoke your husband they’ll say. Don’t argue with a male colleague, you should rather learn from them.

Growing up, my younger brother used to hit me a lot. I obviously didn’t have his physical strength, so I was no match for him.

My late mom, God bless her soul couldn’t do much other than shout at him and tell me how he was a “man” (boy though) and I shouldn’t “look for trouble”. Even our boys are initiated quite early into our cult of societal abuse where it proves they are men.

My Dad travelled a lot back then, so by the time he came home, the news was old and he would just have a talk with my brother.

But I remember the last time my brother hit me. It was after our mom’s demise. We had an argument as usual and he used his fist.

My dad came home that night and after I recounted the day’s experience, he dealt with my brother.
I don’t know what he did, but the magic worked.

I am a believer in the institution of marriage as exampled by Christ in His love for His church, an advocate for gender equality and freedom for women in the context of the scripture.

But I have come to realize that while we encourage women to fight for their freedom, our desired results will not be achieved without the support of amazing men who are modelling Christ like my father, who have just the right magic wand to give male chauvinists a brain reset.

US ends Russian trade relations on oil imports

President Joe Biden has signed legislation blocking Russian oil from being imported into the U.S. and severing all trade relations with the country over its invasion of Ukraine.

Biden signed two bills on Friday seeking to further isolate Russia economically as the U.S. maintains pressure on Moscow to end its invasion of Ukraine. The legislation, which passed overwhelmingly in both houses of Congress, will work to strike an economic artery of energy-rich Russia while relegating the country to the same trade status as Myanmar, Cuba and North Korea.

While Biden had earlier signed an executive order banning imports of Russian oil and gas, House Resolution 6968 codifies the ban into law.

The second bill, H.R. 7108, goes further by suspending normal trade relations with Russia and its ally Belarus. The bill also directs the U.S. trade representative to take steps to suspend Russia’s participation in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

“We know that it will not immediately end the fund of the Putin war machine, but it is a step in the right direction,” Democratic Representative Lloyd Doggett, a sponsor of the Russian oil ban, said on the House floor Wednesday.

He noted that it took “six long weeks” to approve the legislation after negotiations with the Senate. As the bills made their way through both chambers, some Republican lawmakers questioned the effectiveness of cutting off Russian oil imports, suggesting they could strengthen the country’s ties to China while increasing gas prices.

Importing or exporting $5.6 trillion worth of goods and services in 2019, the U.S. is the world’s largest trading nation, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Countries with a permanent normal trade relations designation have advantages in conducing commerce with the U.S., such as reduced tariffs. The U.S. has used the designation to influence countries on human rights issues.

The passage of the bills comes as U.S. officials have voiced growing alarm of alleged human rights violations committed by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Biden has called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to stand trial for war crimes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the U.S. and the European Union to ratchet up sanctions against Russia to end its invasion.

Democratic Representative Richard Neal, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, hailed the passage of both bills, saying in a statement they’ll “hold the Putin regime responsible for its campaign of terror against the Ukrainian people.”

Nigeria declares Friday and Monday as Easter holiday

Friday and Monday have been declared as holidays by the federal government for Easter celebrations.

The announcement was made on Tuesday April 12 by Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on behalf of the federal government.

Dr Shuaib Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry in a statement released on behalf of the minister, urged Christians to emulate the attributes of sacrifice, togetherness, forgiveness, kindness, love, peace and patience, which were the attributes and practices of Jesus Christ, as exemplified by his ministry on earth.

Aregbesola also called on Christians and all Nigerians alike to use the occasion of this year’s Easter celebration to pray for an end to all security challenges bedevilling every part of the country.

The Minister assured that the federal government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the recent attacks by undesirable elements on the highways, airport and the railway are timely brought to an end.

The statement added;

“Security is everybody’s business. I therefore urge Nigerians and foreigners resident in our country to display a high sense of citizenship and public spiritedness at this critical time in the history of our country, by supporting the efforts of all security agencies in bringing peace and security of lives and property of the citizenry”

Cristiano Ronaldo lost his ‘Save the Children Ambassador’ status after smashing a 14-year-old fan’s phone

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been dropped as an ambassador for Save the Children after he allegedly ‘assaulted’ a 14-year-old Everton fan by smashing his phone out of his hand following Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Jake, who has autism, was filming the Manchester United players leaving the pitch at full-time when Ronaldo appeared to knock the phone out of a boy’s hand as he headed towards the tunnel.

The fan has since been identified as Jake Harding, who has autism. Merseyside Police have confirmed they are looking into the incident and are seeking further information.

His mother Sarah Kelly told the Liverpool Echo that the phone belonged to Jake, claiming that the Portuguese striker ‘assaulted’ him and had bruised his hand by knocking the phone to the floor.

Miss Kelly also said her son has declined an invitation from Ronaldo to attend a match at Old Trafford.

In the latest blow to Ronaldo’s public image following the incident, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Save the Children has dumped the Portugal star after 10 years as an ambassador.

The 37-year-old no longer appears on the list of ambassadors on the international charity’s website. Ronaldo first started working with the charity in 2013.

Ronaldo has since apologised for his ‘outburst’ and had to invite the boy to watch a match at Old Trafford, but Miss Kelly said the experience has left Jake wary of going to a football match again.

United have reportedly declined to punish Ronaldo but a spokesperson confirmed they will cooperate with the FA and the police’s inquiries.

Ronaldo said: ‘It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

‘I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.’

Erik ten Hag may become the new Manchester United manager soon

Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Erik ten Hag to become their new manager.

The Ajax and Dutch boss is said to have signed four years deal, with the Red Devils finally finding a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked in November.

Ralf Rangnick has since presided over first-team affairs and will move into a two-year consultancy role at the end of the season.

Old Trafford chiefs made a breakthrough in negotiations with Ten Hag on Tuesday after multiple in-depth interviews, as the 52-year-old laid out his long-term plan for United, including having the final say on transfers and transforming their style of play.

Ten Hag will now become the Red Devils’ fifth permanent manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, following David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Russian soldiers raped hundreds of Ukrainian women – Zelensky

Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russian troops of carrying out ‘hundreds of rapes’ including sexual assaults on small children.

Putin’s soldiers have been linked to a string of horrific atrocities across Ukraine, including the brutal rape and murder of women and children, often in front of their own family members. Moscow has denied the claims.

Speaking to Lithuanian lawmakers today, Zelensky said: ‘In areas freed from the occupiers, the recording and investigation of war crimes committed by Russia continues. New mass graves are found almost daily.

‘Testimonials are being collected. Thousands and thousands of victims. Hundreds of cases of torture. Bodies continue to be found in drains and cellars.

‘Hundreds of cases of rape have been recorded, including those of young girls and very young children. Even of a baby!’

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda responded saying, ‘It’s simply impossible to imagine a greater horror.’

Kateryna Cherepakha, president of La Strada-Ukraine, said her organisation’s emergency hotlines had received calls accusing Russian soldiers of nine cases of rape involving 12 women and girls.

She told the UN: ‘This is just the tip of the iceberg. We know and see – and we want you to hear our voices – that violence and rape is used now as a weapon of war by Russian invaders in Ukraine.’

An 11-year-old boy is among the alleged victims after he was reportedly raped by Russian troops in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch.

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova said the boy was attacked in Bucha where scores of dead civilians showing signs of torture were found weeks after it was recaptured.

Denisova also claimed that five soldiers in Putin’s army raped a 14-year-old girl who has become pregnant.  She said an estimated 120,000 Ukrainian children were rounded up and kidnapped, with some raped and others smuggled over to Russia.

On April 8, a 16-year-old girl and 78-year-old woman were among those raped, official Oleksandr Vilkul claimed.

Meanwhile, one of Putin’s soldiers has been arrested after footage emerged of him allegedly raping a baby in Ukraine.

Alexei Bychkov, 24, sent the vile footage to a Russian comrade before he was detained on Saturday, it was reported.

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky says Russian troops have carried out

The soldier is said to have shared other videos of his abuse of children to other friends and colleagues.

Elsewhere in Bucha, 25 girls and woman aged 14 to 25 were ‘systematically’ raped while being held captive in a basement, it has been claimed. Nine of the women are now pregnant.

Denisova said: ‘Russian soldiers told them they would rape them to the point where they wouldn’t want sexual contact with any man, to prevent them from having Ukrainian children.’

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old woman who lives 45 miles from Kyiv said a Chechen soldier barged into the home she shared with her husband on March 7.

She told the BBC: ‘At gunpoint, he took me to a house nearby. He ordered me: ‘Take your clothes off or I’ll shoot you.’ He kept threatening to kill me if I didn’t do as he said. Then he started raping me.

‘While he was raping me, four more soldiers entered. I thought that I was done for. But they took him away. I never saw him again.’

Russia warns Sweden and Finland against NATO membership

Russia has warned Finland and Sweden against joining Nato, saying the move would not bring stability to Europe.

Nato was formed in 1949 to counter the threat of Soviet expansion and domination, and since the fall of the Berlin wall a number of formerly communist eastern European countries have joined the military alliance.

Member states agree to come to one another’s aid in the event of an armed attack against any individual member state.

Ukraine War: Russia warns Sweden and Finland against Nato membership

Back in February Maria Zakharova, Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, warned of “military and political consequences” if the countries joined the bloc.

And on  Monday, April 11, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation” and thst Moscow is clear when it comes to opposing any potential enlargement of the alliance.

Peskov warned the bloc “is not that kind of alliance which ensures peace and stability, and its further expansion will not bring additional security to the European continent”.

The warning by Russia comes  as US defence officials expect Sweden and Finland to bid for membership of the alliance, potentially as early as June saying Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine has been a “massive strategic blunder” which is likely to bring Nato enlargement.

The move would see the Western alliance grow to 32 members and US State Department officials said last week that discussions had taken place between Nato leaders and foreign ministers from Helsinki and Stockholm.

Before Russia invades Ukraine, Russia demanded that the alliance agree to halt any future enlargement, but the war has led to the deployment of more Nato troops on its eastern flank and a rise in public support for Swedish and Finnish membership.

Finnish lawmakers are expected to receive a security report from intelligence officials this week, and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government “will end the discussion before midsummer” on whether to make a membership application.

Finland shares a 1,340km (830 miles) long border with Russia and has been angered by the invasion of Ukraine.

While Sweden’s ruling Social Democratic party, which has traditionally opposed Nato membership, said it is rethinking this position in light of Russia’s attack on its western neighbour. Party secretary Tobias Baudin told local media that the Nato review should be complete within the next few months.

“When Russia invaded Ukraine, Sweden’s security position changed fundamentally,” the party said in a statement on Monday.

Also both countries stepped up defence spending since the invasion of Ukraine.

On Monday, army leaders in Helsinki announced a new plan to allocate €14m (£10.88m) to purchase drones for Finland’s military.

And last month Swedish officials said they would boost defence spending by three billion kronas ($317m; £243m) in 2022.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s wife petitions UN security council over his illegal abduction, rendition, detention

Mrs. Uchechi Kanu, wife of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the United Nations Security Council over his abduction, rendition and continued detention by the Nigerian Government in cahoots with the Kenyan Government.

In the petition signed on behalf of Mrs. Kanu, the International Counsel and Spokesman for Nnamdi Kanu, Mr. Bruce Fein insisted that the action of both governments was in breach of the fundamental human rights of Kanu.

Mrs. Kanu asked the Security Council to also set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the alleged torture of her husband, and bring those involved to book.

The petition, addressed to the United Kingdom Ambassador to the United Nations and President of the United Nations Security Council, Honorable Barbara Woodward, reads:

Re: Petition to the United Nations Security Council to establish an independent Commission to investigate the complicity of Nigerian and Kenyan government officials or their agents in the criminal kidnapping, torture, extraordinary rendition, and indefinite arbitrary detention of United Kingdom citizens Nnamdi Kanu from Nairobi to Abuja and for the establishment of a Special Tribunal outside either Nigeria or Kenya to prosecute the suspects identified by the Commission

We, the undersigned respectfully petition the United Nations Security Council, acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, to pass a resolution establishing an international

Independent investigation Commission to establish criminal responsibility for Nnamdi Kanu’s kidnapping, torture, and extraordinary rendition from Nairobi, Kenya to Abuja, Nigeria on or about June 2021, and indefinite, ongoing, arbitrary detention in solitary confinement thereafter by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The resolution should also establish a Special Tribunal to prosecute persons the Commission finds have been responsible for Nnamdi Kanu’s kidnapping, torture, extraordinary rendition, and arbitrary detention.

Convincing evidence in the public domain, direct and circumstantial, implicate Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerian Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, among others, in the above-referenced crimes against Nnamdi Kanu.

The governments of Nigeria and Kenya cannot be trusted to investigate or prosecute themselves. The universal legal principle that a person cannot be a judge in his own case applies here.

We submit that Security Council Resolution 1595, which established an independent Commission to investigate the assassins of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Harari, and Security Council Resolution 1757, which established a Special Tribunal for the prosecution of the responsible parties found by the independent Commission, should be considered as templates for the corresponding resolutions.

We are requesting for investigation and prosecution of the crimes against Nnamdi Kanu by Nigerian and Kenyan government officials or their agents.

We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you or your staff in person or over the internet to further elaborate on this petition.

Robert Lewandowski ‘agrees’ terms to join Barcelona – He won’t renew his contract with Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich superstar, Robert Lewandowski has reportedly agreed term to join Barcelona after infoming his German club  that he won’t sign a new contract.

The striker’s current deal with the club expires in the summer of 2023 and he has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks.

Polish television channel TVP Sport have reported that the 33-year-old has told the club’s CEO and veteran goalkeeper Oliver Kahn that he plans to leave the club and has agreed personal terms with Barcelona.

It’s said that ‘all the terms of the contract have been agreed’ and that Bayern Munich are already preparing for life without the Polish international.

If Lewandowski makes a move to Spain,  he would become the first Polish player to ever represent Barcelona.

The Catalan giants have already made impressive progress since club legend Xavi replaced Ronald Koeman as manager.

Spanish publication Sport last week reported that Lewandowski ‘will do everything’ to join Barcelona and that the Spanish side could offer Sergino Dest in return who is a target of the reigning Bundesliga champions.

In his eight seasons at the club he has gone on to become one of their greatest ever players and is only behind Gerd Muller in their all-time record scorer list. In total, Lewandowski has scored a phenomenal 340 goals in 369 appearances since joining the club from rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

French doctors use forceps to perform surgery on man ‘full of flies’ (photos)

Doctors in France have used forceps to carry out an operation on a man who was ‘pregnant in eye with flies’.

The 53-year-old patient had admitted himself to a hospital in France, complaining of an itching right eye that he had suffered from for several hours.

According to a report by the New England Journal of Medicine, the man told doctors he had been gardening near a horse and sheep farm earlier in the day when he felt something enter his eye.

After doctors examined his eye they found ‘more than a dozen mobile, translucent larvae’ moving around on his cornea – the transparent outer covering at the front of the eye.

They also found them inside his conjunctiva, the membrane lining the eyelid and white parts of the eye.

Doctors identified the organism as Oestrus ovis (also known as the sheep bot fly) larvae.

These flies can cause parastic infestations as they can fly into the eye and deposit its larvae there.

The man was diagnosed with external ophthalmomyiasis, which is ‘an infestation of the outer structures of the eye by fly larvae.’

The doctors say they had to remove them by physically plucking them out of the eye with a pair of forceps as the creatures have ‘oral hooks’ used to cling on to the cornea.

After ten days the man reportedly recovered .

“I’m coming home to claim N20bn that the Buhari Govt. owes me” – Sunday Igboho

Igboho said: “Yoruba struggle will remain, and it will be stronger. Yorubas are suffering and smiling. They are killing, kidnapping and doing all sorts in Yorubaland and we are not talking.

“I’m coming back home soon. I’m a true son of the soil. One cannot be scared of his father’s home. Nothing will happen and no one will be scared of anyone.

“I may run for US Presidency in 2024” — Donald Trump

Donald Trump in the campaign

Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that his successor, Joe Biden, is humiliating the country, and told supporters he might run for re-election in 2024.

The 45th president tore into Biden during a ‘Save America’ rally in Selma, North Carolina on Saturday.

“Our children are being indoctrinated, our values are being desecrated, our heritage is being obliterated, and our country is being humiliated by a president who has no idea what the hell is going on,” Trump told the crowd of supporters.

Trump hinted that he might run again for the office in 2024. “I did much better the second time than I did the first and now we may have to do it again. Is there anybody here who’d like to see me run again?”

He also mentioned the midterm election that will take place in November. “This is the year we’re going to take back the House,” Trump said. “We’re going to take back the Senate, and we’re going to take back America, and in 2024, most importantly, we are going to take back our beautiful, beautiful, beautiful White House.”

Trump shocked many observers when he was elected in 2016, beating the odds-on favorite, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He lost in the 2020 contest to Biden, but claimed the race was rigged against him.

Trump supporters stormed and briefly overran the Capitol building in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021, as Congress was finalizing Biden’s victory.

Prof. Osinbajo’s declaration for president— a fresh insight ~ HURIWA says

Prominent Civil Rights Advocacy group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has welcomed the decision by the vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo to publicly declare to succeed his boss because according to the Rights group his availability offers Nigerian voters a fresh insight into the administration.

In a statement obtained by Tori Media on Monday, HURIWA boss, Emmanuel Onwubiko said:

“We in the civil Rights and Human rights advocacy community in Nigeria believe that the decision by vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo to declare to run for the topmost position in Nigeria signposts that there are very many areas that his stay in government as the number two citizen couldn’t be satisfactorily attended to or that he has the secrets to untangling some of those bad policies that this administration unfolded before Nigerians that failed to lift us to our better selves.

“So contrary to the adversarial comments trailing his declaration, HURIWA is hereby appealing to Nigerians to give the Vice President a hearing chance to offer us a rare insight into how an administration that had a lot of goodwill, ended up squandering this goodwill at the altar of religious bigotry, nepotistic and one-sided appointments of only Fulani Moslems to hold strategic national security appointments and yet to have succeeded in turning the home region of these security chiefs which is North West of Nigeria into a war zone.

“We believe that if the VP successfully dethrones his political godfather Senator BolaAhmed Tinubu and win the ticket of his political party, the voters will have the best opportunities of our lifetime to learn hard lessons how not to govern a multi Ethnic and multi religiously diverse nation like Nigeria.

“We think his winning the ticket may offer Nigerians a beautiful opportunity for perfect pay back, a sweet revenge by sending to him the message that he served as the Vice president to a President that created more divisions than he met them.

“We will gladly be available to host the vice president to public debates so he can very well offer us those insights and also unveil to Nigerians the other secret codes he may have evolved to untangle the critical economic and infrastructural problems that have successfully wrestled Nigeria to the ground and have made Nigeria the home to the largest population of absolutely poor people in the world to such a ridiculous extent that at one time in 2018, Nigeria overthrew India as the home of the largest poor people globally with over 90 million of our people who can’t afford three quality square meals per day.

“The entry of the Vice President into the presidential race should be seen as an opportunity to get firsthand information from the man who presumably may have seen it all to inform Nigerians why the administration literally took Nigeria and Nigerians from top to bottom in all areas of our national life including economy, security, social welfare and external indebtedness.”

HURIWA recalled that in stepping into the fray to run for the office of President to succeed his boss, the current Vice president had stated thus: “For the past seven (7) years, I have served as Vice President under a true Nigerian patriot, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“In these 7 years, while on the train of duty and service, I traversed every part of our country, meeting Nigerians of every cadre, class, tribe and walks of life, both young and old; I MET YOU.

“I’ve stood where you stand and sat where you sit. I know and I understand our hopes, aspirations and fears from a place of relatable proximity; and I believe that in those hopes and aspirations are the seeds for the great Nigeria that we all desire.

“I believe that the very reason why the Almighty God gave me these experiences, these insights, and these opportunities, is that they must be put to the use of our country and its great peoples.

“This is why today, with utmost humility, I formally declare my intention to run for the office of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the platform of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.

“I also most solemnly and respectfully seek your support as fellow Nigerians everywhere in this land and the diaspora, as we embark on this great and exciting journey that lies ahead of us.”

HURIWA, however, thinks that since he now wants to succeed his boss, there are areas and milestones that have been left untouched and that this is a signal that the Vice President is unsatisfied by the performance that both himself and his boss have offered to Nigerians which is why he now wants to repeat a tenure or two to be able to realise those unachievable milestones.

“It’s time to return home, Lionel Messi” – Dani Alves

Dani Alves has once again pleaded with former team-mate Lionel Messi to return to Barcelona for a ‘last dance’ together.

Messi is still struggling to adapt to life at Paris Saint-Germain since joining the club after leaving Barcelona last summer.

The Argentine superstar has only netted three times in 27 domestic games for the French side this season.

His former team-mate Alves has called on Messi to return to the club having made his own comeback at the Nou Camp this season.

Alves said in an interview with Catalan media outlet Diario Sport: ‘I don’t know what he thinks or wants to do.

‘He could come back for a little year with me for a last dance. Why not?

‘There’s nowhere better than here. We cannot be better off than at Barca. He left and tried the experience. It’s time to return home if he wants.’

Messi enjoyed incredible success at Barcelona, with full-back Alves as they both  23 trophies together at the Nou Camp.

With several reports, that the Argentine superstar has failed to settle in Paris and at the club, he might leave the club and make a return back to Spain.

“Why Deeper Life Church has embraced the use of laptop, television and social media” – Pastor Kumuyi

The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has explained why his church has embraced the use of television, radio, social media technology.

Kumuyi, whose church members in decades have been known to detest television, technology and use of gadgets claiming they are means to hell, lamented that ‘wicked people’ are using technology to advance their agenda, hence, the church cannot continue ‘sleeping’ but must ‘wake up’ and use the same technology for Gospel’s sake.

Speaking in a video uploaded on Sunday, April 10 via Facebook by the Ekiti State chapter of the church, Kumuyi said Deeper life church was late in taking advantage of technology.

“Why are you the latecomer, why are you the one to be the last to use all these things that the people are using to make the world worse, we are going to rise up.

“Anything at the disposal of the people that are doing evil, we are going to take it away from them and use it for the propagation of the gospel. Let your NO be changed to YES,” he declared.

“People are getting new methods and they are doing evil. These are the last days and evil is growing worse because people go beyond using their natural strengths, natural technology, they use telephones, they use the media, they use all these connections, the Zoom and all these things to expand the evil they are doing.

“If those messengers of Satan are using the present-day technology and they are expanding, how about you? You will use those things available; they are not only available for messengers who do evil, they are available for the people that are doing good. You will use them.

“The church has been asleep. When radio began some years ago, people didn’t understand how voices would be coming out of a radio, and so the church at that time said, ‘No, we cannot use radio, there is something there that is magical, that is demonic, voice coming out from just a gadget?’ The church said no. Then, the people of the world began to use the radio. Then the church woke up.

“When television came, somebody somewhere performing drama, they see him on the screen and then the church said, ‘This is evil, these are the last days, look at them, bringing pictures on the screen and whatever they are doing somewhere’. And the church said, ‘No, we are not going to use that’ but later they woke up and they are now using the television.

“But now the church is waking up and we are seeing that that thing (technology) is to spread the gospel, for the word of God gets everywhere. We will be wiser than the people of the world. The Lord will wake us up.”

Kumuyi, who last September used a private jet and limousine to a crusade in Abuja, said;

“Some people, when the aeroplane came, some people said, ‘We are not doing to use aeroplane’ and they were riding on horses. The bicycle came and they said. ‘God has given us legs and if He has given us legs, why are we going to use bicycles?’

“Motorcycles came, car came and when the aeroplane came, they said, ‘God has given us the land; He has not given us the space and so all those people who are using aeroplane are worldly, are going to go to hell’. I am telling you what they said in those days but now, all those people, aeroplane has silenced them and now they can go anywhere.”

Global food prices on the rise – UN

Global food prices surged to a historic high last month on grain and edible oil supply woes brought about by the conflict in Ukraine, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Friday.

“World food commodity prices made a significant leap in March to reach their highest levels ever, as war in the Black Sea region spread shocks through markets for staple grains and vegetable oils,” the FAO said in a statement.

The FAO’s food price index rose by 12.6% to a record 159.3 points in March against February’s high of 141.4 points, “making a giant leap to a new highest level since its inception in 1990.” The index represents a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities.

The current surge includes new all-time highs for vegetable oils, cereals, and meats, the agency said, noting that prices of sugar and dairy products “also rose significantly.”

The FAO also recently warned that food and feed prices could further jump by up to 20% as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and lead to a surge in global malnourishment.

Russia and Ukraine are the globe’s largest exporters of wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil. Ukrainian exports have been stalled, and sanctions placed on Russia may affect its own deliveries as Black Sea ports used to ship grain remain blocked. Industry analysts fear the planting season in Ukraine may also be affected by the current crisis.

The situation could lead to famine and food rioting in poor countries, especially in Africa, the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, warned earlier this month. She specified that food imports from the Black Sea region were crucial for the survival of 35 African nations.

Meanwhile, the FAO also lowered the projection of global wheat production in 2022 to 784 million tons from last month’s forecast of 790 million, citing the possibility that at least 20% of Ukraine’s winter crop area would not be harvested. It also cut its forecast of global cereals trade in the current marketing year due to disruptions in Black Sea exports. The agency noted, however, that larger exports from India, the EU, Argentina and the US could somewhat offset the trend.

“If you no longer love your wife, take her back to her parents’ house” – Pastor Eneche (video)

Clergyman and senior pastor of Dunamis Church, Pastor Paul Enenche, has said that although divorce is not allowed under any condition, he believes that it is better to be alive and unmarried than to die because of marriage.

In a throwback video that is making the rounds on social media, the clergyman who is said to be the pastor of gospel singer Late Osinachi Nwachukwu, said instead of a man killing a woman who he is not in love with anymore, he should just hand her back to her father.

In his words

”My counsel to anybody. If you don’t love anybody’s daughter, instead of killing them, hand them back to their father. Divorce is not allowed under any condition but this is what I believe. It is better to be alive and there is no marriage than for you to die because of marriage. A killer marriage is a nonsense marriage. I am not talking of physical killing. There are people who can finish their wife or husband emotionally, psychologically, mentally. This woman is a shadow of her life”

“Ban on open grazing in South-East Nigeria to be enforced soon” – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced from April 27, 2022, it will commence the enforcement of its ban on open grazing in the South-East region.

The secessionist group made this known in a statement released by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful today April 11. He explained that from the said date, those who are into cow business in the South-East must have a ranch, and properly mark their cows.

IPOB also noted that ranches must be properly marked with an identifiable name or symbol to avoid sanctions.

The statement reads

“We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to make the following clarifications concerning the ban on the movement of Fulani cows which will take effect from the April 27, 2022.

“From April 27, 2022, we shall commence the enforcement of the ban on open grazing which has since been pronounced by South-East Governors and passed into law by many states in Biafraland but the Nigerian security agencies have failed to enforce them. Thus, from the said date, no cows should be seen roaming the streets of Biafraland.

“From April 27, 2022, anybody interested in cow business anywhere in Biafraland, must have a ranch and properly mark the cows. Cows seen outside ranches with effect from this date shall be treated as contraband products. Owners of such cows should blame themselves.

“Owners of cows and ranches should properly mark them with their ranch name or symbol for easy identification.

“The above measures have become necessary to stop the senseless and wanton killings in our land by Fulani jihadists masquerading as herdsmen. We want to stop the incessant invasion of our communities and raping of our mothers and sisters by Fulani herdsmen. Enough is enough!

“Our action is not targeted against any tribe. We are only taking this measure as a necessity for self-preservation.

“Igbo people alone in Biafraland spent more than N3 trillion every year on cows. We, therefore, want to stop using our money to finance the genocidal attacks on our people by Fulani herdsmen. Let them keep their cows so that we may have our lives.

“We want our people to breed native cows on our land and also put them in a ranch. We won’t tolerate the wandering of cattle again in our land.”

The group, in October 2021, banned the rearing and consumption of cows in the South-East region. The group, however, said the ban would take complete effect in six months’ time.

He added that only local breed would henceforth “be consumed and used for all ceremonies in Biafraland.”

According to him, “from that date, no more Fulani cows shall be allowed into Biafraland for any reason, not for burials, title taking, weddings, etc.”

He said the ban followed constant attacks on their people by suspected Fulani herdsmen, resulting in killing, raping of their women and other forms of assaults.

Russian soldier detained for allegedly raping baby in Ukraine

A Russian soldier has been arrested after he allegedly filmed himself raping a one-year-old baby in Ukraine and shared the horrific video on social media.

Alexei Bychkov is accused of being the man behind the assault, with reports in the Russian media saying he was detained by local police.

The arrest comes after Lyudmila Denisova, commissioner for human rights in the Ukrainian Parliament, alleged on Saturday, April 9, that Russian troops have raped children during the war.

In a statement on Telegram, she said a 14-year-old girl in Bucha was raped by five soldiers and as a result is now pregnant.

Also, an 11-year-old boy in the same town was allegedly raped in front of his mum, who was tied to a chair and forced to watch.

Three soldiers also allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman in Irpen.

Russian soldier arrested for allegedly raping baby in Ukraine

An earlier statement shared on Friday, April 8, said Russians had raped a 16-year-old girl and her 78-year-old grandmother in a village in the Kherson region.

“There is no place on earth or in hell where racist criminals can hide from retribution,” Ms Denisova said.

She urged victims to report cases of sexual violence by soldiers, no matter how difficult it is, adding that they “must bear the strictest responsibility.”

She also revealed harrowing details of the rape of a woman in the Kharkiv region, who is now undergoing rehabilitation.

Ms Denisova wrote: “In the Kharkiv region, the Russian occupier raped a 29-year-old woman caring for her immobile mum for more than a week.

“The woman repeatedly experienced sexual violence on his part, but was unable to reach law enforcement.

“Soon a militant broke her phone. A week later, the rapist began to talk to the woman about love and offered to send her away from the war.

“In response to the woman’s refusal due to the inability to leave the mother, the villain simply shot the old woman in front of her daughter. The woman managed to escape and is now undergoing rehabilitation.”

Ms Denisova’s comments come a week after Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report including witness accounts of Russian soldiers raping and executing Ukrainian civilians.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich makes an offer to buy La Liga giants Valencia

Roman Abramovich has reportedly made an offer to buy La Liga giants Valencia once the sale of Chelsea is completed.

Chelsea are currently in the process of finding new ownership to take over from Abramovich after his assets were seized by the British government due to his alleged links to Russian president Vladimir Putin. Abramovich now has his eye on another club, after reportedly already securing Turkish side Goztepe FC, according to Miguel Zorio, who is a rival bidder for Valencia.

Zorio who was the former president of Valencia has now claimed that he will make official his attempt to buy shares in the Spanish club from the owner, Peter Lim, later this month. Valencia have fallen into financial ruin under their absentee owner and have gone from European regulars to being a mid-table club in La Liga, with multiple star players sold and not replaced over the past 18 months.

There has now been a claim from Zorio that Lim has attempted to sell the club to Abramovich and has accused the current Valencia owner of leaking the news to the media. Zorio has also suggested that the Russian oligarch is the other major contender to buy the club.

Plaza Deportiva report a letter from Zorio as stating: “Peter Lim has tried to sell the club in London for €250million and has not succeeded. Lately, he has leaked to international media that he has two purchase offers, mine and that of the Russian oligarch of Chelsea. Osinachi died of domestic violence, sister reveals

The family of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, has refuted reports that she died of throat cancer.

Tori Media had reported that Osinachi’s death was announced on Friday night after spending five days on life support in Abuja hospital.

Osinachi’s sister, who is the first daughter of the family and was identified as Ms Favor Made, confirmed the reports on Sunday, saying that Osinachi died as a result of a cluster of blood in the chest.

According to the sister, the late “Ekwueme crooner” suffered from a blood clot after the kicking she received from her abusive husband, Peter Nwachukwu.

“We heard it was cancer that killed Osinachi. She did not die of cancer. The husband, Mr Peter Nwachukwu hit her with his leg on the chest. All this while, he has been beating her but my sister hides all that she was passing through from us”.

The sister also said that the family had warned Osinachi to leave the marriage but she prayed that God would change her husband.

“We told her that they are not divorcing and that it’s just a separation. But she felt that God is against divorce. We told her that separation is not a sin but just for her to stay alive and take care of her children. She will always tell us to relax and that the man will change.

“So when the man kicked her in the chest, she fell down and he took her to the hospital but he did not even tell us,” he said.

It was her friend who lives in Ebonyi State who called her twin sister because Osinachi had a twin sister, to ask, “Did your sister tell you that Peter hit her on the chest?”

The sister then told her no.

“It was the hitting on the chest that killed her. My brother had to ask the doctor what killed her and the doctor said that there were clusters of blood on her chest,” she revealed.

However, Made further explained that the doctor was not aware that Osinachi was kicked in the chest.

According to her, Peter had boasted that he was going to separate Osinachi and her twin sister.

She alleged that he had also stopped the siblings from being close or stopped the deceased Osinachi from visiting her village, Isuochi in Abia State.

She also confirmed that he beat her sister severely and was fond of collecting her money while she was left with nothing.

Made added that Peter did not immediately contact their family when Osinachi died until 8 pm when he casually informed their mother of the death.

Western powers pledge 9.1B euros to support Ukrainian refugees

Donors including the Canadian government and the European Commission on Saturday pledged a combined 9.1 billion euros in donations, loans and grants to support refugees fleeing the war following Russia’s invasion.

The fundraising event in Warsaw, Poland, yielded 1.8 billion euros to support internally displaced people inside Ukraine, and 7.3 billion euros for refugees who have fled the country to neighbouring states.

Governments, companies and individuals together pledged 4.1 billion euros in donations, which will be distributed largely via the Ukrainian authorities or the United Nations.

The remaining 5 billion euros were loans and grants from EU financial institutions – including a 4 billion euro programme to help provide housing, education and healthcare for refugees arriving in EU countries.

“We stand by your side, be it now in the times of war, be it with the refugees, but most importantly after this war has been won by Ukraine, for the time for reconstruction and rebuilding the country,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who visited Kyiv on Friday and co-hosted the event with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

More than 4 million people have now fled Ukraine to seek shelter in EU countries, while 6.5 million people have fled their homes but remain inside Ukraine, the European Commisison said.

Nigerian busted with heroin worth N164M by the Indian Police in India

The Narcotic Squad, West District in India busted an international drug cartel and arrested a 34-year-old Nigerian national with over 600 gm of heroin worth Rs 3 crore in his possession.

The accused identified as Prince Emeka Lath, from Anambra state was arrested on Friday, April 8, in Tilak Nagar, Delhi.

According to the police, the accused came to India on a tourist visa in January 2017, but even after his visa expired, he neither extended it nor returned to Nigeria.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ghanshyam Bansal said a tip-off was received that an African national involved in drug peddling would deliver a consignment of heroin in Tilak Nagar. The police then laid a trap near Santgarh in Tilak Nagar.

“After a wait for two hours, the accused was apprehended from the spot and 602 gm fine quality heroin, sourced from Afghanistan, was recovered from his possession,” the DCP stated.

“On interrogation, accused Prince Emeka Lath disclosed that he received the recovered contraband from another African national, named Charles,”

“The search for Charles is being conducted. Efforts are also being made to unearth the whole racket. The recovered heroin was brought to Delhi from Afghanistan and efforts are being made to track its route and identify other people involved in the racket.” he added.

Putin loses another commando, Colonel Alexander Bespalov, in the Ukraine invasion

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost his ninth colonel as tank commander becomes the latest senior Russian officer to be killed in the ongoing Ukraine war

A funeral was held for Colonel Alexander Bespalov on Friday in the closed Russian city of Ozersk, according to a local announcement, which said he was killed ‘during a special military operation in Ukraine.’ a term used by Moscow to avoid saying ‘war’.

The statement said Bespalov was the commander of the 59th Guards Tank Regiment, and become the latest senior Russian military officer to be killed in the war that has seen Kyiv’s forces surprise exerts with their fierce resistance.

In addition, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence estimates that Russia has sent more than 19,000 troops to their deaths. Meanwhile, thousands of Moscow’s soldiers have retreated from the Kyiv region to refocus Russia’s military efforts on eastern Ukraine.

However, a senior U.S. defense official said Friday that the Pentagon has determined that some of the Russian combat units that retreated from the Kyiv area in recent days are so heavily damaged and depleted that their combat utility is in question.

Some analysts have suggested that the focus on the Donbas and the pledge to de-escalate may merely be an effort to put a positive spin on reality: Moscow’s ground forces have been thwarted – and have taken heavy losses – in their bid to seize the capital and other major cities.

The Kremlin has a policy of playing down military casualties with a 2015 decree declaring all deaths in conflict a state secret, and last year any statement discrediting the military were criminalised.

The announcement of his funeral has since been deleted. Ozersk is a closed Russian city, meaning travel in and out is heavily restricted.

One tribute, from the colonel’s sister, said: ‘It is impossible to put into words what pain you feel when you lose a close and dear person,’ Tatyana Karsakova, wrote. ‘Dear brother, you will always be alive in our hearts!’

A fellow officer said: ‘I did not know and did not meet a more worthy person who had the right to call himself an officer than my first commander Alexander Bespalov, who became my friend, whose family I was closely acquainted with.’

Fenerbahce will be terminating Mesut Ozil’s contract’ soon

Fenerbahce have reportedly started the process of terminating Mesut Ozil’s contract as the midfielder edges closer to leaving the club.

The former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder was suspended by Fenerbahce last month after allegedly having an argument with interim manager Ismail Kartal during a game against Konyaspor.

As reported by Diario AS, when asked about the possibility of Ozil being reinstated in the team, Fenerbahce president Ali Koc said: ‘We do not have that plan at the moment. This decision is not child’s play. The most important thing is Fenerbahce.’

Although Ozil’s contract runs until June 2024, negotiations are set to begin to attempt to annul his deal.

Speaking at the end of March, Ozil’s agent Erkut Sogut stated that his client has no plans to leave Fenerbahce.

Sogut told reporters via Fanatik: ‘Mesut did not want to make it difficult in the current environment. Since he does not want to leave Ozan on his own, he trains with him.

‘That’s what makes sense right now because of the sad events with the coach.

‘Such events are always sad. An unpleasant process has begun for both sides. The important thing is to stay calm and wait for the final decision.

‘I say this clearly here. Mesut will not go anywhere, and he certainly has no plans to leave. He will continue here as a Fenerbahce player for two more years until the end of his contract.

‘He signed Fenerbahce for three-and-a-half years, six months of which he played for free. From January to the end of the season, he didn’t even make any money.

‘Mesut did not go out and denigrate anyone. What happened there will stay there. If his punishment comes, it will be taken and it will end.’

Ozil signed for Fenerbahce in January 2021 having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Championship side Hull have been linked with Ozil due to them being owned by Turkish media company Acun Medya.

Did Donald Trump took 15 ‘top secret’ files from the White House when he left office ?

The FBI has started investigations into the handling of classified materials that were in the 15 boxes of material that were moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, Florida when Donald Trump left office in January 2021.

According to a Thursday night, April 7 report by the New York Times and Washington Post, the FBI probe was triggered by the discovery of ‘top secret’ information found in the boxes  and it was filled with documents and momentos from Trump’s four years in office.

In January 2, the National Archives and Records Administration recovered  15 boxes from Trump’s Florida estate, and revealed the move publicly in February, saying that the contents should have been handed over to the National Archives as required by the Presidential Records Act instead of being taken by Trump.

On Thursday, April 7, House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland pointing out that the National Archives wouldn’t release the contents of the 15 boxes of materials recovered from Mar-a-Lago and accused the DOJ of ‘obstructing’ the Congressional investigation.

‘The Committee does not wish to interfere in any manner with any potential or ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice,’ Maloney wrote.

‘However, the Committee has not received any explanation as to why the Department is preventing NARA from providing information to the Committee that relates to compliance with the [Presidential Records Act], including unclassified information describing the contents of the 15 boxes from Mar-a-Lago.’

The Times report then concluded that the ex-president would not likely be the target of the FBI-led investigation .

Nigeria becomes the country with highest number of IS attacks

Nigeria has overtaken Iraq as the country with the highest number of attacks by the Islamic State (IS).

This was captured in a global and cyber jihad date published by Jihad Analytics. The company which processes data on global and cyber jihad, noted that half of the attacks claimed by IS since the beginning of 2022 were in Africa.

Jihad Analytics also said the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), an affiliate of IS, is now more active in Nigeria.

While Nigeria has recorded a total of 162 IS operations since January 2022, Iraq has recorded 120.

The company wrote in a tweet;

“Since the beginning of the year, the Islamic State has conducted half of its attacks in #Africa.

“For the first time in the history of the jihadi group, Iraq is no longer the country where #IS claims the highest number of operations: the group #ISWAP is now more active in Nigeria.”

Federal High Court strikes out 8 of 15 charges against Nnamdi Kanu

A federal high court in Abuja has struck out 8 out of the 15-count charge filed against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by the federal government.

The 15 charges which bordered on terrorism were filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.

When the case resumed on Friday, April 8, at the court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Binta Nyako struck out eight of the charges while delivering a ruling on the validity of the charges.

She held that in the instant preliminary objection application, counts six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, and 14 have not disclosed any offence by the defendant.

The judge, however, acknowledged that counts one, two, three, four, five, 13, and 15 showed some allegations against the IPOB leader, saying the trial of the defendant would proceed on those counts.

“I have read the counts and counts 6,7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.

“Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some allegations. The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those count,” Justice Nyako said.

The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, since his arrest in June 2021 in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial before Justice Nyako.

He was arrested and arraigned for agitating for the actualization of Biafra.

However, the IPOB leader contested the charges in a fundamental human rights suit against the Federal Government.

Russia suspended from UN Human Rights Council

The United Nations General Assembly has suspended Russia from the UN Human Rights Council after high-profile allegations of atrocities committed by Russian soldiers during the war in Ukraine.

The measure suspends Russia’s membership in the Council and would launch a review of the matter if the UN deems it appropriate.

The United States ambassador to the United Nations made a case for seeking the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council in front of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, something she and other UN member states have been pushing.

UN suspends Russia from Human Rights Council

“Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose — whose very purpose — is to promote respect for human rights. Not only is it the height of hypocrisy — it is dangerous,” Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.

“Every day, we see more and more how little Russia respects human rights,” she said.

“Russia’s participation on the Human Rights Council hurts the Council’s credibility. It undermines the entire UN. And it is just plain wrong.”

On Thursday, April 7 the UN general council voted with 93 countries in favor, 24 against and 58 abstentions.

UN suspends Russia from Human Rights Council

A draft of the resolution says the General Assembly may “suspend the rights of membership in the Human Rights Council of a member of the Council that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights.”

The draft resolution adds that the council has “grave concern” regarding reports of “gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” and “violations of international humanitarian law” committed by the Russian Federation during its invasion of Ukraine.

The General Assembly needed to vote in favor by two-thirds of the countries present before Russia could be removed from the UN Human Rights Council.

Before the vote, the deputy Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Gennady Kuzmin, called on member states to reject the resolution, saying it would set a “a dangerous precedent.”

“Today is not the time nor the place for theatrics, or these kinds of extremely theatrical performances like the one presented by Ukraine. In fact the draft resolution we are considering today has no relationship to the actual human rights situation on the ground,” Kuzmin said.

The Russian representative said the vote on suspending Russia from the Human Rights Council “is an attempt by the United States to maintain its dominant position and total control to continue its attempt at human rights colonialism in international relations.”

Louis Charbonneau, the UN director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement that Russia’s suspension sends “a crystal-clear message” that they have “no business” on the council.

“The General Assembly has sent a crystal-clear message to Russia’s leadership that a government whose military is routinely committing horrific rights violations has no business on the UN Human Rights Council,” Charbonneau said.

“Gruesome images from Bucha have shocked people around the world. Victims and their families deserve to see those responsible held to account. Investigators from the UN and International Criminal Court should set the wheels of justice in motion by moving swiftly to gather and preserve evidence of war crimes.”

“Why Nigerians can’t carry guns” – Minister of Police Affairs

Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi has said the country’s insecurity would be worsened if Nigerians are allowed to bear arms.

Answering a question on the call by Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa for Nigerians to bear arms in self-defense over widespread insecurity in the country, the Minister who spoke at a media parley in Abuja on Thursday evening April 4, said he doesn’t support such action.

Dingyadi said;

“We are even doing all we can to ensure that we minimize the circulation of firearms among most Nigerians. We should restrict this to people who are supposed to own them, those who are supposed to use them, people who have been trained to use them and people who have access to use them.

“Otherwise, if you make it all people’s affair, it will worsen the situation. This is my honest opinion. I don’t share that view at this moment, I don’t support that”

The Minister further maintained that his ministry is doing everything in its capacity to ensure that implementation of salary increments for police officers across the country becomes a reality as soon as possible.

“The Face of War”: Ukranian artist designs mosaic of Putin’s face with bullet shells

A Ukranian artist, Daria Marchenko, has painstakingly created an eight feet tall mosaic of the Russian President Vladimir Putin entitled by the artist as “THE FACE OF WAR”.

The mosaic was made with 5000 empty bullet shells picked from the streets of Ukraine.

During an interview, Marchenko explained that the art work was inspired by the ongoing unprovoked war declared by President Putin against her country.

The war has witnessed a catastrophic humanity crisis in the Eastern European country since its inception earlier this year.

What is the casualty stats of the Russia – Ukraine war?

The United Nations’ human rights office, meanwhile, has recorded 977 civilian deaths and 1,594 injured in Ukraine since the conflict began, it said Wednesday — figures that it concedes are incomplete and fall far short of the likely tolls.

So far, some 4.2 million have left the country for neighbouring countries from the war-torn country itself.

At least 6.5 million people are estimated to have been internally displaced in Ukraine, according to the United Nations Protection Cluster.

In total, more than ten million people are already thought to have fled their homes in Ukraine both internally and externally because of the invasion, according to the United Nations.

While the fiercest hostilities continue in eastern Ukraine, the conflict has expanded with attacks escalating in the west, including only 25km away from Poland’s border.

Tori Media reported earlier that a railway station in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, was hit by a missile killing at least 30 people.

Reacting to the attack, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that it was a “Tochka U” rocket launched by “Russian monsters” that caused the damage.

As one zooms into the photo of the mosaic, one will be forced to realise why Edgar Degas, the 19th century French artist philosopher famously said: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

Terrorism: Tel Aviv kills a terror suspect that killed 2 people in Israel

Israeli security forces have found and killed the suspect who shot dead two people and wounded more in a Tel Aviv bar Thursday night, following an hours-long manhunt involving over 100 officers.

The 28-year-old Palestinian suspect was found near a mosque in Jaffa – just outside Tel Aviv itself – sparking a firefight in which he was killed.

Mayor Ron Huldai claimed earlier the gunman had “nationalistic” motives, and follows a string of Palestinian attacks last week that killed 11 people.

Losses! Russia Government finally admits to lost most of its soldiers to the invasion in Ukraine

The Russian government has finally admitted it experienced losses during its invasion of Ukraine.

During the war which has entered its 44th day, the Russian government had played down claims by Ukraine that it has suffered losses on the battle field.

On 25 March, Russia’s Ministry of Defence said 1,351 of its soldiers had been killed in combat. Ukraine puts the Russian deaths at almost 19,000.

Western leaders believe that between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.

Now, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has admitted that Russia has suffered”significant losses of troops” in Ukraine saying the losses were a “huge tragedy”.

He told British channel Sky News that he hoped Moscow would reach its war goals “in the coming days”.

Peskov who serves as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson since 2000, also claimed that Russia is searching for ways to end the war.

“Our military are doing their best to bring an end to that operation,” he said. “And we do hope that in coming days, in the foreseeable future, this operation will reach its goals or will finish it by the negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegation.”

Russia has pulled troops away from Kyiv and shifted most of the focus of its war to eastern Ukraine – but the fighting shows no signs of ending.

Speaking to Russia’s parliament, the state Duma, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin admitted that the cumulative impact of extensive sanctions means the country is facing its worst economic outlook in decades.

“No doubt, the current situation could be called the most difficult in three decades for Russia,” he said. “Such sanctions were not used even in the darkest times of the Cold War.”

Nigerians and others will be banned from buying properties in Canada

Canada is set to ban Nigerians and other foreigners from buying homes for two years as prices of real estate properties soar in the North American country.

The measure will help the country provide billions of dollars to spur construction activity in an attempt to cool off a surging real-estate market, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

According to the international news platform, the ban would be contained in Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s budget today, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the matter is private.

However, the foreign-buyer ban won’t apply to students, foreign workers or foreign citizens who are permanent residents of Canada, the source said.

The move signals that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is becoming more assertive about taming one of the developed world’s most expensive housing markets — and that the government is growing more concerned about the political backlash to inflation and the rising cost of housing.

Home prices in Canada have soared more than 50% over the past two years. The market saw a record monthly increase in February as buyers acted ahead of rate increases by the Bank of Canada, taking the benchmark price of a home to C$869,300 ($693,000).

Canada, one of the top destinations of Nigerians, has witnessed an upsurge of global immigrants of late including Nigerians in their 20s and 30s who relocated after the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

The Canadian Government had also said it targets receiving 1.2 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023 in order to make up for a shortfall caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Russian troops talked about killing civilians in Bucha over the radio, Der Spiegel found.

The radio transmissions were obtained by German intelligence and presented in parliament Wednesday.

They contradict Russian claims that the atrocities found in the Ukrainian town were staged.

Germany intercepted radio transmissions of Russian soldiers discussing the killings of civilians in the town of Bucha, contradicting Russian propaganda claims of a hoax, according to a report by Der Spiegel.

The radio transmissions were obtained by the Bundesnachrichtendienst, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, and presented to parliament on Wednesday, Der Spiegel reported.

In one of the recordings, a Russian soldier could be heard describing how he shot someone off their bicycle, Der Spiegel reported.

It is unclear what day the radio messages were sent and where the Russian troops were at the time.

Footage and images of people killed, with some on the street, in Bucha emerged earlier this week after Russian forces left the town.

On Tuesday, The New York Times published independently verified aerial footage that shows a Russian armored vehicle shooting at a civilian on a bicycle in Bucha. It is unclear whether the person in the video was the same as the one referred to in the radio messages.

The audio recordings also suggest that the Russian mercenary military, the Wagner Group, played a key role in the atrocities in Bucha, Der Spiegel reported.

It is not entirely clear who runs or finances the Wagner Group, but the US and European Union have linked Yevgeny Prigozhin, an oligarch and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to the organization.

The group has been tied to Russian separatists in the pro-Kremlin Donbas region since 2014, as well as accused of committing war crimes and human-rights abuses in Syria in 2015.

Western intelligence said last month that as many as 1,000 of the group’s mercenaries were being deployed to eastern Ukraine.

Russia has denied responsibility for the atrocities in Bucha, claiming without evidence that the footage coming out of Bucha is staged or otherwise manipulated.

On Tuesday, the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti ran an opinion column that speculated the killings were a ploy by Western nations to impose further sanctions on Russia.

This timeline undermines Russia’s claim that the Bucha killings were a Ukrainian hoax.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine tweeted the Spiegel report on Thursday, writing: “Radio intercepts by the German Intelligence, show that the massacre of civilians in Bucha was not accidental or actions of rogue soldiers.”

BREAKING News: Ketanji Brown confirmed as first Black woman on U.S. Supreme Court

Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in a milestone for the United States and a victory for President Joe Biden, who made good on a campaign promise as he seeks to infuse the federal judiciary with a broader range of backgrounds.

The vote to confirm the 51-year-old federal appellate judge to a lifetime job on the nation’s top judicial body was 53-47, with three Republicans – Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney – joining Biden’s fellow Democrats. A simple majority was needed, as Jackson overcame Republican opposition in a Supreme Court confirmation process that remains fiercely partisan.

Jackson will take the 83-year-old Breyer’s place on the liberal bloc of a court with an increasingly assertive 6-3 conservative majority. Breyer is due to serve until the court’s current term ends – usually in late June – and Jackson would be formally sworn in after that. Jackson served early in her career as a Supreme Court clerk for Breyer.

Democrat Raphael Warnock, one of the Senate’s three Black members, said in debate before the vote: “I’m the father of a young Black girl. I know how much it means for Judge Jackson to have navigated the double jeopardy of racism and sexism to now stand in the glory of this moment. … Seeing Judge Jackson ascend to the Supreme Court reflects the promise of progress on which our democracy rests. What a great day it is in America.”

Of the 115 people who have served on the Supreme Court since its 1789 founding, all but three have been white. It has had two Black justices, both men: Clarence Thomas, appointed in 1991 and still serving, and Thurgood Marshall, who retired in 1991 and died in 1993. Current Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the only Hispanic ever to serve on it. Jackson is set to become the sixth woman justice ever.

Presidential nominations to the Supreme Court have become a flashpoint in American politics. The court wields great influence in shaping American policy on hot-button issues including abortion, guns, voting laws, LGBT rights, religious liberty, the death penalty and race-based practices.

Before Jackson joins the bench, the Supreme Court is due to rule in major cases including one that could overturn the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide and another that could expand gun rights.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s top Republican, criticized Jackson in the debate before the vote, calling her the choice of the “radical left” and saying her “disturbing” judicial record included injecting personal policy biases in rulings and treating convicted criminals as gently as possible in sentencing.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the first Black woman to hold that post after Biden selected her as his 2020 election running mate, presided over the vote. A Harris spokesperson said the vice president believes Jackson will become an “exceptional” justice.

‘EQUAL JUSTICE’

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer noted the country’s legacy of slavery and past struggles to bring rights to women and Black Americans, adding: “Today we are taking a giant, bold and important step on the well-trodden path toward fulfilling our country’s founding promise.”

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, the Judiciary Committee chairman, said, “We are beginning to write another chapter in our nation’s quest for equal justice under the law, and that chapter begins with three letters: KBJ,” using her initials.

Biden appointed Jackson last year to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit after she spent eight years as a federal district judge. Like the three conservative justices appointed by the Democrat Biden’s Republican predecessor Donald Trump, Jackson is young enough to serve for decades in the lifetime job.

During her March confirmation hearings, Jackson said what she hopes to bring to the Supreme Court is similar to what the prior 115 justices have delivered: their own life experiences and perspectives. She said hers included time as a federal judge, a court-appointed lawyer for criminal defendants who could not afford an attorney, a member of a federal commission on criminal sentencing and “being a Black woman, lucky inheritor of the civil rights dream.” read more

Jackson noted that she was born in 1970 in the aftermath of congressional passage of major civil rights laws aimed at curbing discrimination against Black people and other minorities and referenced the fact that her parents had experienced lawful racial segregation first-hand in their hometown of Miami.

Biden has aimed to bring more women and minorities and a broader range of backgrounds to the federal judiciary. His appointment of Jackson fulfilled a pledge he made during the 2020 presidential campaign to name a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

The other women to have served on the Supreme Court include current members Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan and Sotomayor, the retired Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died in 2020.

Bucha Massacre: How Russian soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed civilians in Bucha, Ukraine

As Mykola Pavlyuk stood outside his apartment building in Bucha, tears streamed from his eyes, cutting through the grime on his face. He was desperate to share his story but shook from the trauma of it.

Pavlyuk, 53, was one of the surviving residents of the besieged Ukrainian town, northwest of Kyiv, where gruesome evidence of killings and torture has come to light following the withdrawal of Russian forces.

He told ABC News that when Russian troops came to his apartment building, they killed all the men who were younger than 50, including two of Pavlyuk’s friends.

Pavlyuk said he was given 20 minutes to bury them. He showed ABC News the shallow graves he hastily dug in the backyard, each marked with a plank of wood and topped with a religious icon. He wanted to give them whatever dignity he could.

“But it’s too shallow,” Pavlyuk said. “I just wanted to protect them from the dogs.”

Pavlyuk and other residents spoke with ABC News in the days after Russian forces departed Bucha, leaving an apparent trail of death, destruction, terror and trauma that has shaken the international community.

Hundreds of people were said to have been killed during the occupation. When ABC News arrived on Tuesday, bodies still lay in the streets.

World leaders have called for an investigation into whether war crimes, including genocide, were committed.

When Russian troops arrived in Bucha in late February, they asked everyone for documentation and forced the men to strip down naked to reveal any tattoos, according to Pavlyuk.

They immediately shot and killed anyone whom they deemed a threat, without asking any questions, he said.

The mayor of the nearby village of Motyzhyn, Olga Sukhenko, and her family appear to have met the same fate. ABC News witnessed their lifeless bodies in a wooded area.

Another Bucha resident, who declined to give her name, told ABC News her husband was also forced to remove his clothes to show whether he had any tattoos.

Russian soldiers took over Pavlyuk’s apartment building, turning the homes of Ukrainian families into wartime dormitories for drunk, violent thugs, he said. Rooms that Pavlyuk showed ABC News were strewn with blankets and old food.

Pavlyuk said he and his wife lived in the basement for more than month with little food or water, only leaving to cook on a stove outside.

He told ABC News they faced the constant fear of an arbitrary killing or a random act of violence, like when a friend was killed by a grenade he said was thrown as a joke by a drunk soldier.

The friend’s body parts lay outside on the ground for days until Pavlyuk was allowed to gather them, put them in a bag and bury them in a grave next to his two other friends, he said.

More bodies were dumped in a mass grave outside a church. Residents had gone out to collect some of the dead from the streets while the town was under Russian occupation.

The trench was filled with bodies in black plastic bags that lay on top of other victims, who were either wrapped in sheets or nothing at all. Locals told ABC News there could be as many as 90 people buried there.

Russian forces invaded neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, seizing territory and bombing entire cities. As the war grinds on, Russia faces strong resistance from Ukraine, whose troops managed to take back some territory in recent days as Russian forces retreated.

According to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venedyktova, at least 410 civilians have been found dead in Bucha and other recently recaptured towns near Ukraine’s capital, where there’s an ongoing investigation into possible war crimes committed by Russian forces.

Graphic images have emerged from Bucha showing unarmed individuals in civilian clothes who appear to have been executed with their hands or legs bound, sparking outrage from the United States as well as a number of other nations and institutions.

Russia has denied responsibility, calling the images “fake” and saying all of its units withdrew completely from Bucha around March 30.

An ABC News analysis of videos and satellite imagery confirms some of the bodies seen lying in the streets of Bucha were there as early as March 19, when the town was still occupied by Russian forces, contradicting Russia’s claims that the scene was “staged” after its troops left.

While in Bucha, ABC News encountered a Human Rights Watch team gathering evidence of war crimes.

“What we’ve seen so far and what we’ve heard from residents — what we’ve been documenting — is really horrific, including reports that Russian forces have pulled people out of their homes, briefly interrogated them and then executed them,” said Richard Weir, a researcher in the Crisis and Conflict division at Human Rights Watch.

A team from the International Committee of the Red Cross was also on scene in Bucha, assessing needs and delivering humanitarian aid.

“Humanitarian situation is dire,” ICRC spokesperson Alyona Synenko told ABC News. “We have seen extremely vulnerable people — elderly, people with limited mobility, people who are sick, who are alone in their unheated apartments with no electricity, with no running water, with medical needs.”

Bucha residents Tatyana Chernysh and her husband told ABC News they must have survived “by God’s will” when so many of their neighbors did not.

“At any time, the occupiers could enter our premises and do with us whatever they wanted,” said Chernysh’s husband, who said he was too frightened to give his first name. “It was terrifying. It was awful.”

The couple didn’t leave their house while Russian troops occupied the town. They said “good people” brought them food and medicine. Although the Russian soldiers camped away from their home, Chernysh and her husband said they heard unyielding gunfire and that stray bullets pockmarked their house.

Since the withdrawal of Russian forces and the recent arrival of aid, Chernysh and her husband have finally come out of hiding to see what remains of their battered town. They recalled seeing bodies strewn across the streets and sidewalks.

“It is obvious their intention was to destroy Ukraine, destroy our people, destroy our economy, destroy our culture,” Chernysh’s husband said of the Russian troops. “They claimed they came to liberate. They didn’t. They are terrorists.”

After surviving such “senseless” horror, the family said they “feel safe” and intend to stay in Bucha, despite a lack of electricity, running water and reliable communication.

“It’s where we live. We don’t want to yield our homes to occupiers,” Chernysh’s husband said. “It is our town. It is our home. We are going to stay.”

Although he admitted they might think twice if Russian forces return.

“Hopefully they won’t come back,” he added, “but with them you can never tell.”
