“I’m coming back home soon. I’m a true son of the soil. One cannot be scared of his father’s home. Nothing will happen and no one will be scared of anyone.
“All that I’ve asked the Federal Government they are yet to answer, and the court has ruled in my favour. Asides from the judgement in Benin Republic, I’m coming to follow up with my judgement in Nigeria. Federal Government must pay my money. It is 20bn.
“When I get back to my base in Ibadan, I will thank everyone specially again. You will see me well. Dear Yorubas, don’t be scared, Igboho is back.”

Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that his successor, Joe Biden, is humiliating the country, and told supporters he might run for re-election in 2024.
The 45th president tore into Biden during a ‘Save America’ rally in Selma, North Carolina on Saturday.
“Our children are being indoctrinated, our values are being desecrated, our heritage is being obliterated, and our country is being humiliated by a president who has no idea what the hell is going on,” Trump told the crowd of supporters.
Trump hinted that he might run again for the office in 2024. “I did much better the second time than I did the first and now we may have to do it again. Is there anybody here who’d like to see me run again?”
He also mentioned the midterm election that will take place in November. “This is the year we’re going to take back the House,” Trump said. “We’re going to take back the Senate, and we’re going to take back America, and in 2024, most importantly, we are going to take back our beautiful, beautiful, beautiful White House.”
Trump shocked many observers when he was elected in 2016, beating the odds-on favorite, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He lost in the 2020 contest to Biden, but claimed the race was rigged against him.
Trump supporters stormed and briefly overran the Capitol building in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021, as Congress was finalizing Biden’s victory.

Do you know this man holds the singer down and makes the kids stomp on her and hit her?
The Warsaw government panel hasclaimed that Russiawas behind a 2010 plane crash that killed 96 including the Polish leader Lech Kaczynski.
The latest report today released by the special commission alleges that the April 10, 2010 crash was caused by an intentional detonation of planted explosives.
The plane crash killed Mr. Kaczynski, the first lady, and 94 other members of the government and armed forces as well as many other prominent Polish figures.
Commission head Antoni Macierewicz today told a news conference that their deaths were caused by an ‘act of unlawful interference by the Russian side.’
Mr. Macierwicz, who in 2015-2018 served as defense minister in Poland’s right-wing government, added:’The main and indisputable proof of the interference was an explosion in the left-wing ? followed by an explosion in the plane’s centre.’
And he denied that there were any mistakes made by Polish pilots or crew members, despite there being bad weather at the time of the crash.
The new report repeats numerous previous allegations made by the commission, appointed by the government whose key figure is the main ruling Law and Justice party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin of the late president.
Yesterday, Polish President Andrzej Duda stood at Pilsudski Square to place a candle at the monument to the victims of the plane crash. It was part of the ceremonies commemorating the 12th anniversary of the crash.
Today’s new report comes as Russia’s war unleashed on Poland’s neighbouring country Ukraine rages on and amid current tense relations between Moscow and Warsaw.
Poland is supporting Ukraine in its battle against Russia and is calling for tough sanctions on Moscow after its February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
Prominent Civil Rights Advocacy group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has welcomed the decision by the vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo to publicly declare to succeed his boss because according to the Rights group his availability offers Nigerian voters a fresh insight into the administration.
In a statement obtained by Tori Media on Monday, HURIWA boss, Emmanuel Onwubiko said:
“We in the civil Rights and Human rights advocacy community in Nigeria believe that the decision by vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo to declare to run for the topmost position in Nigeria signposts that there are very many areas that his stay in government as the number two citizen couldn’t be satisfactorily attended to or that he has the secrets to untangling some of those bad policies that this administration unfolded before Nigerians that failed to lift us to our better selves.
“So contrary to the adversarial comments trailing his declaration, HURIWA is hereby appealing to Nigerians to give the Vice President a hearing chance to offer us a rare insight into how an administration that had a lot of goodwill, ended up squandering this goodwill at the altar of religious bigotry, nepotistic and one-sided appointments of only Fulani Moslems to hold strategic national security appointments and yet to have succeeded in turning the home region of these security chiefs which is North West of Nigeria into a war zone.
“We believe that if the VP successfully dethrones his political godfather Senator BolaAhmed Tinubu and win the ticket of his political party, the voters will have the best opportunities of our lifetime to learn hard lessons how not to govern a multi Ethnic and multi religiously diverse nation like Nigeria.
“We think his winning the ticket may offer Nigerians a beautiful opportunity for perfect pay back, a sweet revenge by sending to him the message that he served as the Vice president to a President that created more divisions than he met them.
“We will gladly be available to host the vice president to public debates so he can very well offer us those insights and also unveil to Nigerians the other secret codes he may have evolved to untangle the critical economic and infrastructural problems that have successfully wrestled Nigeria to the ground and have made Nigeria the home to the largest population of absolutely poor people in the world to such a ridiculous extent that at one time in 2018, Nigeria overthrew India as the home of the largest poor people globally with over 90 million of our people who can’t afford three quality square meals per day.
“The entry of the Vice President into the presidential race should be seen as an opportunity to get firsthand information from the man who presumably may have seen it all to inform Nigerians why the administration literally took Nigeria and Nigerians from top to bottom in all areas of our national life including economy, security, social welfare and external indebtedness.”
HURIWA recalled that in stepping into the fray to run for the office of President to succeed his boss, the current Vice president had stated thus: “For the past seven (7) years, I have served as Vice President under a true Nigerian patriot, President Muhammadu Buhari.
“In these 7 years, while on the train of duty and service, I traversed every part of our country, meeting Nigerians of every cadre, class, tribe and walks of life, both young and old; I MET YOU.
“I’ve stood where you stand and sat where you sit. I know and I understand our hopes, aspirations and fears from a place of relatable proximity; and I believe that in those hopes and aspirations are the seeds for the great Nigeria that we all desire.
“I believe that the very reason why the Almighty God gave me these experiences, these insights, and these opportunities, is that they must be put to the use of our country and its great peoples.
“This is why today, with utmost humility, I formally declare my intention to run for the office of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the platform of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.
“I also most solemnly and respectfully seek your support as fellow Nigerians everywhere in this land and the diaspora, as we embark on this great and exciting journey that lies ahead of us.”
HURIWA, however, thinks that since he now wants to succeed his boss, there are areas and milestones that have been left untouched and that this is a signal that the Vice President is unsatisfied by the performance that both himself and his boss have offered to Nigerians which is why he now wants to repeat a tenure or two to be able to realise those unachievable milestones.
Dani Alves has once again pleaded with former team-mate Lionel Messi to return to Barcelona for a ‘last dance’ together.
Messi is still struggling to adapt to life at Paris Saint-Germain since joining the club after leaving Barcelona last summer.
The Argentine superstar has only netted three times in 27 domestic games for the French side this season.
His former team-mate Alves has called on Messi to return to the club having made his own comeback at the Nou Camp this season.
Alves said in an interview with Catalan media outlet Diario Sport: ‘I don’t know what he thinks or wants to do.
‘He could come back for a little year with me for a last dance. Why not?
‘There’s nowhere better than here. We cannot be better off than at Barca. He left and tried the experience. It’s time to return home if he wants.’
Messi enjoyed incredible success at Barcelona, with full-back Alves as they both 23 trophies together at the Nou Camp.
With several reports, that the Argentine superstar has failed to settle in Paris and at the club, he might leave the club and make a return back to Spain.
The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has explained why his church has embraced the use of television, radio, social media technology.
Kumuyi, whose church members in decades have been known to detest television, technology and use of gadgets claiming they are means to hell, lamented that ‘wicked people’ are using technology to advance their agenda, hence, the church cannot continue ‘sleeping’ but must ‘wake up’ and use the same technology for Gospel’s sake.
Speaking in a video uploaded on Sunday, April 10 via Facebook by the Ekiti State chapter of the church, Kumuyi said Deeper life church was late in taking advantage of technology.
“Why are you the latecomer, why are you the one to be the last to use all these things that the people are using to make the world worse, we are going to rise up.
“Anything at the disposal of the people that are doing evil, we are going to take it away from them and use it for the propagation of the gospel. Let your NO be changed to YES,” he declared.
“People are getting new methods and they are doing evil. These are the last days and evil is growing worse because people go beyond using their natural strengths, natural technology, they use telephones, they use the media, they use all these connections, the Zoom and all these things to expand the evil they are doing.
“If those messengers of Satan are using the present-day technology and they are expanding, how about you? You will use those things available; they are not only available for messengers who do evil, they are available for the people that are doing good. You will use them.
“The church has been asleep. When radio began some years ago, people didn’t understand how voices would be coming out of a radio, and so the church at that time said, ‘No, we cannot use radio, there is something there that is magical, that is demonic, voice coming out from just a gadget?’ The church said no. Then, the people of the world began to use the radio. Then the church woke up.
“When television came, somebody somewhere performing drama, they see him on the screen and then the church said, ‘This is evil, these are the last days, look at them, bringing pictures on the screen and whatever they are doing somewhere’. And the church said, ‘No, we are not going to use that’ but later they woke up and they are now using the television.
“But now the church is waking up and we are seeing that that thing (technology) is to spread the gospel, for the word of God gets everywhere. We will be wiser than the people of the world. The Lord will wake us up.”
Kumuyi, who last September used a private jet and limousine to a crusade in Abuja, said;
“Some people, when the aeroplane came, some people said, ‘We are not doing to use aeroplane’ and they were riding on horses. The bicycle came and they said. ‘God has given us legs and if He has given us legs, why are we going to use bicycles?’
“Motorcycles came, car came and when the aeroplane came, they said, ‘God has given us the land; He has not given us the space and so all those people who are using aeroplane are worldly, are going to go to hell’. I am telling you what they said in those days but now, all those people, aeroplane has silenced them and now they can go anywhere.”
Global food prices surged to a historic high last month on grain and edible oil supply woes brought about by the conflict in Ukraine, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Friday.
“World food commodity prices made a significant leap in March to reach their highest levels ever, as war in the Black Sea region spread shocks through markets for staple grains and vegetable oils,” the FAO said in a statement.
The FAO’s food price index rose by 12.6% to a record 159.3 points in March against February’s high of 141.4 points, “making a giant leap to a new highest level since its inception in 1990.” The index represents a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities.
The current surge includes new all-time highs for vegetable oils, cereals, and meats, the agency said, noting that prices of sugar and dairy products “also rose significantly.”
The FAO also recently warned that food and feed prices could further jump by up to 20% as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and lead to a surge in global malnourishment.
Russia and Ukraine are the globe’s largest exporters of wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil. Ukrainian exports have been stalled, and sanctions placed on Russia may affect its own deliveries as Black Sea ports used to ship grain remain blocked. Industry analysts fear the planting season in Ukraine may also be affected by the current crisis.
The situation could lead to famine and food rioting in poor countries, especially in Africa, the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, warned earlier this month. She specified that food imports from the Black Sea region were crucial for the survival of 35 African nations.
Meanwhile, the FAO also lowered the projection of global wheat production in 2022 to 784 million tons from last month’s forecast of 790 million, citing the possibility that at least 20% of Ukraine’s winter crop area would not be harvested. It also cut its forecast of global cereals trade in the current marketing year due to disruptions in Black Sea exports. The agency noted, however, that larger exports from India, the EU, Argentina and the US could somewhat offset the trend.
Clergyman and senior pastor of Dunamis Church, Pastor Paul Enenche, has said that although divorce is not allowed under any condition, he believes that it is better to be alive and unmarried than to die because of marriage.
In a throwback video that is making the rounds on social media, the clergyman who is said to be the pastor of gospel singer Late Osinachi Nwachukwu, said instead of a man killing a woman who he is not in love with anymore, he should just hand her back to her father.
In his words
”My counsel to anybody. If you don’t love anybody’s daughter, instead of killing them, hand them back to their father. Divorce is not allowed under any condition but this is what I believe. It is better to be alive and there is no marriage than for you to die because of marriage. A killer marriage is a nonsense marriage. I am not talking of physical killing. There are people who can finish their wife or husband emotionally, psychologically, mentally. This woman is a shadow of her life”
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced from April 27, 2022, it will commence the enforcement of its ban on open grazing in the South-East region.
The secessionist group made this known in a statement released by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful today April 11. He explained that from the said date, those who are into cow business in the South-East must have a ranch, and properly mark their cows.
IPOB also noted that ranches must be properly marked with an identifiable name or symbol to avoid sanctions.
The statement reads
“We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to make the following clarifications concerning the ban on the movement of Fulani cows which will take effect from the April 27, 2022.
“From April 27, 2022, we shall commence the enforcement of the ban on open grazing which has since been pronounced by South-East Governors and passed into law by many states in Biafraland but the Nigerian security agencies have failed to enforce them. Thus, from the said date, no cows should be seen roaming the streets of Biafraland.
“From April 27, 2022, anybody interested in cow business anywhere in Biafraland, must have a ranch and properly mark the cows. Cows seen outside ranches with effect from this date shall be treated as contraband products. Owners of such cows should blame themselves.
“Owners of cows and ranches should properly mark them with their ranch name or symbol for easy identification.
“The above measures have become necessary to stop the senseless and wanton killings in our land by Fulani jihadists masquerading as herdsmen. We want to stop the incessant invasion of our communities and raping of our mothers and sisters by Fulani herdsmen. Enough is enough!
“Our action is not targeted against any tribe. We are only taking this measure as a necessity for self-preservation.
“Igbo people alone in Biafraland spent more than N3 trillion every year on cows. We, therefore, want to stop using our money to finance the genocidal attacks on our people by Fulani herdsmen. Let them keep their cows so that we may have our lives.
“We want our people to breed native cows on our land and also put them in a ranch. We won’t tolerate the wandering of cattle again in our land.”
The group, in October 2021, banned the rearing and consumption of cows in the South-East region. The group, however, said the ban would take complete effect in six months’ time.
He added that only local breed would henceforth “be consumed and used for all ceremonies in Biafraland.”
According to him, “from that date, no more Fulani cows shall be allowed into Biafraland for any reason, not for burials, title taking, weddings, etc.”
He said the ban followed constant attacks on their people by suspected Fulani herdsmen, resulting in killing, raping of their women and other forms of assaults.
A Russian soldier has been arrested after he allegedly filmed himself raping a one-year-old baby in Ukraine and shared the horrific video on social media.
Alexei Bychkov is accused of being the man behind the assault, with reports in the Russian media saying he was detained by local police.
The arrest comes after Lyudmila Denisova, commissioner for human rights in the Ukrainian Parliament, alleged on Saturday, April 9, that Russian troops have raped children during the war.
In a statement on Telegram, she said a 14-year-old girl in Bucha was raped by five soldiers and as a result is now pregnant.
Also, an 11-year-old boy in the same town was allegedly raped in front of his mum, who was tied to a chair and forced to watch.
Three soldiers also allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman in Irpen.
An earlier statement shared on Friday, April 8, said Russians had raped a 16-year-old girl and her 78-year-old grandmother in a village in the Kherson region.
“There is no place on earth or in hell where racist criminals can hide from retribution,” Ms Denisova said.
She urged victims to report cases of sexual violence by soldiers, no matter how difficult it is, adding that they “must bear the strictest responsibility.”
She also revealed harrowing details of the rape of a woman in the Kharkiv region, who is now undergoing rehabilitation.
Ms Denisova wrote: “In the Kharkiv region, the Russian occupier raped a 29-year-old woman caring for her immobile mum for more than a week.
“The woman repeatedly experienced sexual violence on his part, but was unable to reach law enforcement.
“Soon a militant broke her phone. A week later, the rapist began to talk to the woman about love and offered to send her away from the war.
“In response to the woman’s refusal due to the inability to leave the mother, the villain simply shot the old woman in front of her daughter. The woman managed to escape and is now undergoing rehabilitation.”
Ms Denisova’s comments come a week after Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report including witness accounts of Russian soldiers raping and executing Ukrainian civilians.
Roman Abramovich has reportedly made an offer to buy La Liga giants Valencia once the sale of Chelsea is completed.
Chelsea are currently in the process of finding new ownership to take over from Abramovich after his assets were seized by the British government due to his alleged links to Russian president Vladimir Putin. Abramovich now has his eye on another club, after reportedly already securing Turkish side Goztepe FC, according to Miguel Zorio, who is a rival bidder for Valencia.
Zorio who was the former president of Valencia has now claimed that he will make official his attempt to buy shares in the Spanish club from the owner, Peter Lim, later this month. Valencia have fallen into financial ruin under their absentee owner and have gone from European regulars to being a mid-table club in La Liga, with multiple star players sold and not replaced over the past 18 months.
There has now been a claim from Zorio that Lim has attempted to sell the club to Abramovich and has accused the current Valencia owner of leaking the news to the media. Zorio has also suggested that the Russian oligarch is the other major contender to buy the club.
Plaza Deportiva report a letter from Zorio as stating: “Peter Lim has tried to sell the club in London for €250million and has not succeeded. Lately, he has leaked to international media that he has two purchase offers, mine and that of the Russian oligarch of Chelsea. And from here, I tell him that either he puts €50m every year to compensate for the losses he generates or he sells to us. Whether he likes it or not.
The family of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, has refuted reports that she died of throat cancer.
Tori Media had reported that Osinachi’s death was announced on Friday night after spending five days on life support in Abuja hospital.
Osinachi’s sister, who is the first daughter of the family and was identified as Ms Favor Made, confirmed the reports on Sunday, saying that Osinachi died as a result of a cluster of blood in the chest.
According to the sister, the late “Ekwueme crooner” suffered from a blood clot after the kicking she received from her abusive husband, Peter Nwachukwu.
“We heard it was cancer that killed Osinachi. She did not die of cancer. The husband, Mr Peter Nwachukwu hit her with his leg on the chest. All this while, he has been beating her but my sister hides all that she was passing through from us”.
The sister also said that the family had warned Osinachi to leave the marriage but she prayed that God would change her husband.
“We told her that they are not divorcing and that it’s just a separation. But she felt that God is against divorce. We told her that separation is not a sin but just for her to stay alive and take care of her children. She will always tell us to relax and that the man will change.
“So when the man kicked her in the chest, she fell down and he took her to the hospital but he did not even tell us,” he said.
It was her friend who lives in Ebonyi State who called her twin sister because Osinachi had a twin sister, to ask, “Did your sister tell you that Peter hit her on the chest?”
The sister then told her no.
“It was the hitting on the chest that killed her. My brother had to ask the doctor what killed her and the doctor said that there were clusters of blood on her chest,” she revealed.
However, Made further explained that the doctor was not aware that Osinachi was kicked in the chest.
According to her, Peter had boasted that he was going to separate Osinachi and her twin sister.
She alleged that he had also stopped the siblings from being close or stopped the deceased Osinachi from visiting her village, Isuochi in Abia State.
She also confirmed that he beat her sister severely and was fond of collecting her money while she was left with nothing.
Made added that Peter did not immediately contact their family when Osinachi died until 8 pm when he casually informed their mother of the death.
Donors including the Canadian government and the European Commission on Saturday pledged a combined 9.1 billion euros in donations, loans and grants to support refugees fleeing the war following Russia’s invasion.
The fundraising event in Warsaw, Poland, yielded 1.8 billion euros to support internally displaced people inside Ukraine, and 7.3 billion euros for refugees who have fled the country to neighbouring states.
Governments, companies and individuals together pledged 4.1 billion euros in donations, which will be distributed largely via the Ukrainian authorities or the United Nations.

“We stand by your side, be it now in the times of war, be it with the refugees, but most importantly after this war has been won by Ukraine, for the time for reconstruction and rebuilding the country,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who visited Kyiv on Friday and co-hosted the event with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
More than 4 million people have now fled Ukraine to seek shelter in EU countries, while 6.5 million people have fled their homes but remain inside Ukraine, the European Commisison said.

The Narcotic Squad, West District in India busted an international drug cartel and arrested a 34-year-old Nigerian national with over 600 gm of heroin worth Rs 3 crore in his possession.
The accused identified as Prince Emeka Lath, from Anambra state was arrested on Friday, April 8, in Tilak Nagar, Delhi.
According to the police, the accused came to India on a tourist visa in January 2017, but even after his visa expired, he neither extended it nor returned to Nigeria.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ghanshyam Bansal said a tip-off was received that an African national involved in drug peddling would deliver a consignment of heroin in Tilak Nagar. The police then laid a trap near Santgarh in Tilak Nagar.
“After a wait for two hours, the accused was apprehended from the spot and 602 gm fine quality heroin, sourced from Afghanistan, was recovered from his possession,” the DCP stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost his ninth colonel as tank commander becomes the latest senior Russian officer to be killed in the ongoing Ukraine war
A funeral was held for Colonel Alexander Bespalov on Friday in the closed Russian city of Ozersk, according to a local announcement, which said he was killed ‘during a special military operation in Ukraine.’ a term used by Moscow to avoid saying ‘war’.
The statement said Bespalov was the commander of the 59th Guards Tank Regiment, and become the latest senior Russian military officer to be killed in the war that has seen Kyiv’s forces surprise exerts with their fierce resistance.
In addition, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence estimates that Russia has sent more than 19,000 troops to their deaths. Meanwhile, thousands of Moscow’s soldiers have retreated from the Kyiv region to refocus Russia’s military efforts on eastern Ukraine.
However, a senior U.S. defense official said Friday that the Pentagon has determined that some of the Russian combat units that retreated from the Kyiv area in recent days are so heavily damaged and depleted that their combat utility is in question.
Some analysts have suggested that the focus on the Donbas and the pledge to de-escalate may merely be an effort to put a positive spin on reality: Moscow’s ground forces have been thwarted – and have taken heavy losses – in their bid to seize the capital and other major cities.
The Kremlin has a policy of playing down military casualties with a 2015 decree declaring all deaths in conflict a state secret, and last year any statement discrediting the military were criminalised.
The announcement of his funeral has since been deleted. Ozersk is a closed Russian city, meaning travel in and out is heavily restricted.
One tribute, from the colonel’s sister, said: ‘It is impossible to put into words what pain you feel when you lose a close and dear person,’ Tatyana Karsakova, wrote. ‘Dear brother, you will always be alive in our hearts!’
A fellow officer said: ‘I did not know and did not meet a more worthy person who had the right to call himself an officer than my first commander Alexander Bespalov, who became my friend, whose family I was closely acquainted with.’
Fenerbahce have reportedly started the process of terminating Mesut Ozil’s contract as the midfielder edges closer to leaving the club.
The former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder was suspended by Fenerbahce last month after allegedly having an argument with interim manager Ismail Kartal during a game against Konyaspor.
As reported by Diario AS, when asked about the possibility of Ozil being reinstated in the team, Fenerbahce president Ali Koc said: ‘We do not have that plan at the moment. This decision is not child’s play. The most important thing is Fenerbahce.’
Although Ozil’s contract runs until June 2024, negotiations are set to begin to attempt to annul his deal.
Speaking at the end of March, Ozil’s agent Erkut Sogut stated that his client has no plans to leave Fenerbahce.
Sogut told reporters via Fanatik: ‘Mesut did not want to make it difficult in the current environment. Since he does not want to leave Ozan on his own, he trains with him.
‘That’s what makes sense right now because of the sad events with the coach.
‘Such events are always sad. An unpleasant process has begun for both sides. The important thing is to stay calm and wait for the final decision.
‘I say this clearly here. Mesut will not go anywhere, and he certainly has no plans to leave. He will continue here as a Fenerbahce player for two more years until the end of his contract.
‘He signed Fenerbahce for three-and-a-half years, six months of which he played for free. From January to the end of the season, he didn’t even make any money.
‘Mesut did not go out and denigrate anyone. What happened there will stay there. If his punishment comes, it will be taken and it will end.’
Ozil signed for Fenerbahce in January 2021 having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
Championship side Hull have been linked with Ozil due to them being owned by Turkish media company Acun Medya.
The FBI has started investigations into the handling of classified materials that were in the 15 boxes of material that were moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, Florida when Donald Trump left office in January 2021.
According to a Thursday night, April 7 report by the New York Times and Washington Post, the FBI probe was triggered by the discovery of ‘top secret’ information found in the boxes and it was filled with documents and momentos from Trump’s four years in office.
In January 2, the National Archives and Records Administration recovered 15 boxes from Trump’s Florida estate, and revealed the move publicly in February, saying that the contents should have been handed over to the National Archives as required by the Presidential Records Act instead of being taken by Trump.
On Thursday, April 7, House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland pointing out that the National Archives wouldn’t release the contents of the 15 boxes of materials recovered from Mar-a-Lago and accused the DOJ of ‘obstructing’ the Congressional investigation.
‘The Committee does not wish to interfere in any manner with any potential or ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice,’ Maloney wrote.
‘However, the Committee has not received any explanation as to why the Department is preventing NARA from providing information to the Committee that relates to compliance with the [Presidential Records Act], including unclassified information describing the contents of the 15 boxes from Mar-a-Lago.’
The Times report then concluded that the ex-president would not likely be the target of the FBI-led investigation .
Nigeria has overtaken Iraq as the country with the highest number of attacks by the Islamic State (IS).
This was captured in a global and cyber jihad date published by Jihad Analytics. The company which processes data on global and cyber jihad, noted that half of the attacks claimed by IS since the beginning of 2022 were in Africa.
Jihad Analytics also said the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), an affiliate of IS, is now more active in Nigeria.
While Nigeria has recorded a total of 162 IS operations since January 2022, Iraq has recorded 120.
The company wrote in a tweet;
“Since the beginning of the year, the Islamic State has conducted half of its attacks in #Africa.
“For the first time in the history of the jihadi group, Iraq is no longer the country where #IS claims the highest number of operations: the group #ISWAP is now more active in Nigeria.”
The luxurious gold-plated penthouse home of Russian president, Vladimir Putin’s daughter has been revealed for the first time.
Luiza Rozova, 19, is the secret daughter of Putin’s ‘former lover’ Svetlana Krivonogikh, 45, a cleaner-turned-multimillionaire who now owns a stake in a major Russian bank.
Luiza and Krivonogikh now reportedly want to rent out the St Petersburg apartment for $10,000 a month including utility charges.
Estate agent, Engel & Volkers released photos showing a giant chandelier while the children’s room features an intricately painted ceiling.
Luiza, unlike Putin’s two older daughters, has not been sanctioned by the UK and US.
The student was once active on social media and made her accounts private after being bombarded by a wave of abuses following the war in Ukraine launched by Putin.
Putin has not publicly acknowledged his daughter, also known as Elizaveta or Luiza Krivonogikh.
A federal high court in Abuja has struck out 8 out of the 15-count charge filed against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by the federal government.
The 15 charges which bordered on terrorism were filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.
When the case resumed on Friday, April 8, at the court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Binta Nyako struck out eight of the charges while delivering a ruling on the validity of the charges.
She held that in the instant preliminary objection application, counts six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, and 14 have not disclosed any offence by the defendant.
The judge, however, acknowledged that counts one, two, three, four, five, 13, and 15 showed some allegations against the IPOB leader, saying the trial of the defendant would proceed on those counts.
“I have read the counts and counts 6,7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.
“Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some allegations. The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those count,” Justice Nyako said.
The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, since his arrest in June 2021 in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial before Justice Nyako.
He was arrested and arraigned for agitating for the actualization of Biafra.
However, the IPOB leader contested the charges in a fundamental human rights suit against the Federal Government.
The United Nations General Assembly has suspended Russia from the UN Human Rights Council after high-profile allegations of atrocities committed by Russian soldiers during the war in Ukraine.
The measure suspends Russia’s membership in the Council and would launch a review of the matter if the UN deems it appropriate.
The United States ambassador to the United Nations made a case for seeking the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council in front of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, something she and other UN member states have been pushing.
“Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose — whose very purpose — is to promote respect for human rights. Not only is it the height of hypocrisy — it is dangerous,” Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.
“Every day, we see more and more how little Russia respects human rights,” she said.
“Russia’s participation on the Human Rights Council hurts the Council’s credibility. It undermines the entire UN. And it is just plain wrong.”
On Thursday, April 7 the UN general council voted with 93 countries in favor, 24 against and 58 abstentions.
A draft of the resolution says the General Assembly may “suspend the rights of membership in the Human Rights Council of a member of the Council that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights.”
The draft resolution adds that the council has “grave concern” regarding reports of “gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” and “violations of international humanitarian law” committed by the Russian Federation during its invasion of Ukraine.
The General Assembly needed to vote in favor by two-thirds of the countries present before Russia could be removed from the UN Human Rights Council.
Before the vote, the deputy Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Gennady Kuzmin, called on member states to reject the resolution, saying it would set a “a dangerous precedent.”
“Today is not the time nor the place for theatrics, or these kinds of extremely theatrical performances like the one presented by Ukraine. In fact the draft resolution we are considering today has no relationship to the actual human rights situation on the ground,” Kuzmin said.
The Russian representative said the vote on suspending Russia from the Human Rights Council “is an attempt by the United States to maintain its dominant position and total control to continue its attempt at human rights colonialism in international relations.”
Louis Charbonneau, the UN director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement that Russia’s suspension sends “a crystal-clear message” that they have “no business” on the council.
“The General Assembly has sent a crystal-clear message to Russia’s leadership that a government whose military is routinely committing horrific rights violations has no business on the UN Human Rights Council,” Charbonneau said.
“Gruesome images from Bucha have shocked people around the world. Victims and their families deserve to see those responsible held to account. Investigators from the UN and International Criminal Court should set the wheels of justice in motion by moving swiftly to gather and preserve evidence of war crimes.”
Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi has said the country’s insecurity would be worsened if Nigerians are allowed to bear arms.
Answering a question on the call by Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa for Nigerians to bear arms in self-defense over widespread insecurity in the country, the Minister who spoke at a media parley in Abuja on Thursday evening April 4, said he doesn’t support such action.
Dingyadi said;
“We are even doing all we can to ensure that we minimize the circulation of firearms among most Nigerians. We should restrict this to people who are supposed to own them, those who are supposed to use them, people who have been trained to use them and people who have access to use them.
“Otherwise, if you make it all people’s affair, it will worsen the situation. This is my honest opinion. I don’t share that view at this moment, I don’t support that”
The Minister further maintained that his ministry is doing everything in its capacity to ensure that implementation of salary increments for police officers across the country becomes a reality as soon as possible.
A Ukranian artist, Daria Marchenko, has painstakingly created an eight feet tall mosaic of the Russian President Vladimir Putin entitled by the artist as “THE FACE OF WAR”.
The mosaic was made with 5000 empty bullet shells picked from the streets of Ukraine.
During an interview, Marchenko explained that the art work was inspired by the ongoing unprovoked war declared by President Putin against her country.
The war has witnessed a catastrophic humanity crisis in the Eastern European country since its inception earlier this year.
What is the casualty stats of the Russia – Ukraine war?
The United Nations’ human rights office, meanwhile, has recorded 977 civilian deaths and 1,594 injured in Ukraine since the conflict began, it said Wednesday — figures that it concedes are incomplete and fall far short of the likely tolls.
So far, some 4.2 million have left the country for neighbouring countries from the war-torn country itself.
At least 6.5 million people are estimated to have been internally displaced in Ukraine, according to the United Nations Protection Cluster.
In total, more than ten million people are already thought to have fled their homes in Ukraine both internally and externally because of the invasion, according to the United Nations.
While the fiercest hostilities continue in eastern Ukraine, the conflict has expanded with attacks escalating in the west, including only 25km away from Poland’s border.
Tori Mediareported earlier that a railway station in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, was hit by a missile killing at least 30 people.
Reacting to the attack, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that it was a “Tochka U” rocket launched by “Russian monsters” that caused the damage.
As one zooms into the photo of the mosaic, one will be forced to realise why Edgar Degas, the 19th century French artist philosopher famously said: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
Israeli security forces have found and killed the suspect who shot dead two people and wounded more in a Tel Aviv bar Thursday night, following an hours-long manhunt involving over 100 officers.
The 28-year-old Palestinian suspect was found near a mosque in Jaffa – just outside Tel Aviv itself – sparking a firefight in which he was killed.
Mayor Ron Huldai claimed earlier the gunman had “nationalistic” motives, and follows a string of Palestinian attacks last week that killed 11 people.
The Russian government has finally admitted it experienced losses during its invasion of Ukraine.
During the war which has entered its 44th day, the Russian government had played down claims by Ukraine that it has suffered losses on the battle field.
On 25 March, Russia’s Ministry of Defence said 1,351 of its soldiers had been killed in combat. Ukraine puts the Russian deaths at almost 19,000.
Western leaders believe that between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.
Now, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has admitted that Russia has suffered”significant losses of troops” in Ukraine saying the losses were a “huge tragedy”.
He told British channel Sky News that he hoped Moscow would reach its war goals “in the coming days”.
Peskov who serves as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson since 2000, also claimed that Russia is searching for ways to end the war.
“Our military are doing their best to bring an end to that operation,” he said. “And we do hope that in coming days, in the foreseeable future, this operation will reach its goals or will finish it by the negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegation.”
Russia has pulled troops away from Kyiv and shifted most of the focus of its war to eastern Ukraine – but the fighting shows no signs of ending.
Speaking to Russia’s parliament, the state Duma, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin admitted that the cumulative impact of extensive sanctions means the country is facing its worst economic outlook in decades.
“No doubt, the current situation could be called the most difficult in three decades for Russia,” he said. “Such sanctions were not used even in the darkest times of the Cold War.”
Canada is set to ban Nigerians and other foreigners from buying homes for two years as prices of real estate properties soar in the North American country.
The measure will help the country provide billions of dollars to spur construction activity in an attempt to cool off a surging real-estate market, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
According to the international news platform, the ban would be contained in Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s budget today, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the matter is private.
However, the foreign-buyer ban won’t apply to students, foreign workers or foreign citizens who are permanent residents of Canada, the source said.
The move signals that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is becoming more assertive about taming one of the developed world’s most expensive housing markets — and that the government is growing more concerned about the political backlash to inflation and the rising cost of housing.
Home prices in Canada have soared more than 50% over the past two years. The market saw a record monthly increase in February as buyers acted ahead of rate increases by the Bank of Canada, taking the benchmark price of a home to C$869,300 ($693,000).
Canada, one of the top destinations of Nigerians, has witnessed an upsurge of global immigrants of late including Nigerians in their 20s and 30s who relocated after the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.
The Canadian Government had also said it targets receiving 1.2 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023 in order to make up for a shortfall caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hackers have reportedly taken down a popular betting site, bet9ja
Stakers who frequently use the betting site said the hack was noticed in the wee hours of Wednesday as they could not access the platform.
According to an operator, Michael Okoro who spoke with our Correspondent in Owerri, he said that he stayed over in his shop late on Tuesday and noticed the abnormalities early Wednesday morning.
He also alleged that the hackers have contacted the betting company and demanded a ransom of N5bn.
“I have not worked since Wednesday morning due to the attack on the bet9ja site. “The site has been down for almost 48 hours. They company I heard said the hackers demanded a ransom of N5bn to allow them control over the site.”
He also said that the situation has kept him out of work and prays that it be solved before next week Monday.
Our correspondent who tried to access the site, only saw the official statement from the betting site confirming the hack.

Russian troops talked about killing civilians in Bucha over the radio, Der Spiegel found.
The radio transmissions were obtained by German intelligence and presented in parliament Wednesday.
They contradict Russian claims that the atrocities found in the Ukrainian town were staged.
Germany intercepted radio transmissions of Russian soldiers discussing the killings of civilians in the town of Bucha, contradicting Russian propaganda claims of a hoax, according to a report by Der Spiegel.
The radio transmissions were obtained by the Bundesnachrichtendienst, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, and presented to parliament on Wednesday, Der Spiegel reported.
In one of the recordings, a Russian soldier could be heard describing how he shot someone off their bicycle, Der Spiegel reported.
It is unclear what day the radio messages were sent and where the Russian troops were at the time.
Footage and images of people killed, with some on the street, in Bucha emerged earlier this week after Russian forces left the town.
On Tuesday, The New York Times published independently verified aerial footage that shows a Russian armored vehicle shooting at a civilian on a bicycle in Bucha. It is unclear whether the person in the video was the same as the one referred to in the radio messages.
The audio recordings also suggest that the Russian mercenary military, the Wagner Group, played a key role in the atrocities in Bucha, Der Spiegel reported.
It is not entirely clear who runs or finances the Wagner Group, but the US and European Union have linked Yevgeny Prigozhin, an oligarch and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to the organization.
The group has been tied to Russian separatists in the pro-Kremlin Donbas region since 2014, as well as accused of committing war crimes and human-rights abuses in Syria in 2015.
Western intelligence said last month that as many as 1,000 of the group’s mercenaries were being deployed to eastern Ukraine.
Russia has denied responsibility for the atrocities in Bucha, claiming without evidence that the footage coming out of Bucha is staged or otherwise manipulated.
On Tuesday, the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti ran an opinion column that speculated the killings were a ploy by Western nations to impose further sanctions on Russia.
This timeline undermines Russia’s claim that the Bucha killings were a Ukrainian hoax.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine tweeted the Spiegel report on Thursday, writing: “Radio intercepts by the German Intelligence, show that the massacre of civilians in Bucha was not accidental or actions of rogue soldiers.”
Justice Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court has released a new practice direction for the trial of terrorism cases before the Court.
The cases of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, bureau de change operators accused of financing terrorism, and Boko Haram suspects are currently before the court.
Justice Tsoho said the new policy is in the exercise of his constitutional powers as enshrined in Section 254 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
Under the new arrangement, the court said media coverage of proceedings is strictly prohibited, “save as may be directed by the court.”
“A person who contravenes an order or direction made under these practice directions shall be deemed to have committed an offence contrary to section 34(5) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2011 (as amended),” the direction states.
It further reads that “only the judges; other essential court staff and security agencies involved in the particular case and their vehicles shall have access to the court premises.”
He said in any proceedings the court deems necessary to ensure the safety and or to protect the identity of the victim or witness, may hold its proceedings at any place to be designated by the chief judge with the Code of Conduct Tribunal as the venue for the time being.
“The names, addresses, telephone numbers and identity of the victims of such offences or witnesses in the proceedings shall not be disclosed in any record or report of the proceedings and it shall be sufficient to designate the names of the victims or witnesses with a combination of alphabets.”
The court listed other procedure to include evidence by video link; permit the witness to be screened or masked; receive written depositions of expert witnesses; and direct that all or any part of the proceedings of the court shall not be published in any manner.
Others are to exclude from the proceedings any person other than the parties and their legal representatives; make order as to any electronic devices that would be allowed during proceedings; and make order on any other measure that the court considers appropriate in the circumstances.
Nigerian medical practitioner, Dr. Olufunmilato has warned Nigerians against sitting in the toilet for too long. According to him, this can lead to a person developing Hemorrhoids also known as pile.
In a Twitter thread, Dr Olufunmilayo explained what could happen to the anus after prolonged sitting on a toilet seat.
Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in a milestone for the United States and a victory for President Joe Biden, who made good on a campaign promise as he seeks to infuse the federal judiciary with a broader range of backgrounds.
The vote to confirm the 51-year-old federal appellate judge to a lifetime job on the nation’s top judicial body was 53-47, with three Republicans – Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney – joining Biden’s fellow Democrats. A simple majority was needed, as Jackson overcame Republican opposition in a Supreme Court confirmation process that remains fiercely partisan.
Jackson will take the 83-year-old Breyer’s place on the liberal bloc of a court with an increasingly assertive 6-3 conservative majority. Breyer is due to serve until the court’s current term ends – usually in late June – and Jackson would be formally sworn in after that. Jackson served early in her career as a Supreme Court clerk for Breyer.
Democrat Raphael Warnock, one of the Senate’s three Black members, said in debate before the vote: “I’m the father of a young Black girl. I know how much it means for Judge Jackson to have navigated the double jeopardy of racism and sexism to now stand in the glory of this moment. … Seeing Judge Jackson ascend to the Supreme Court reflects the promise of progress on which our democracy rests. What a great day it is in America.”
Of the 115 people who have served on the Supreme Court since its 1789 founding, all but three have been white. It has had two Black justices, both men: Clarence Thomas, appointed in 1991 and still serving, and Thurgood Marshall, who retired in 1991 and died in 1993. Current Justice Sonia Sotomayor is the only Hispanic ever to serve on it. Jackson is set to become the sixth woman justice ever.
Presidential nominations to the Supreme Court have become a flashpoint in American politics. The court wields great influence in shaping American policy on hot-button issues including abortion, guns, voting laws, LGBT rights, religious liberty, the death penalty and race-based practices.
Before Jackson joins the bench, the Supreme Court is due to rule in major cases including one that could overturn the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide and another that could expand gun rights.
Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s top Republican, criticized Jackson in the debate before the vote, calling her the choice of the “radical left” and saying her “disturbing” judicial record included injecting personal policy biases in rulings and treating convicted criminals as gently as possible in sentencing.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the first Black woman to hold that post after Biden selected her as his 2020 election running mate, presided over the vote. A Harris spokesperson said the vice president believes Jackson will become an “exceptional” justice.
‘EQUAL JUSTICE’
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer noted the country’s legacy of slavery and past struggles to bring rights to women and Black Americans, adding: “Today we are taking a giant, bold and important step on the well-trodden path toward fulfilling our country’s founding promise.”
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, the Judiciary Committee chairman, said, “We are beginning to write another chapter in our nation’s quest for equal justice under the law, and that chapter begins with three letters: KBJ,” using her initials.
Biden appointed Jackson last year to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit after she spent eight years as a federal district judge. Like the three conservative justices appointed by the Democrat Biden’s Republican predecessor Donald Trump, Jackson is young enough to serve for decades in the lifetime job.
During her March confirmation hearings, Jackson said what she hopes to bring to the Supreme Court is similar to what the prior 115 justices have delivered: their own life experiences and perspectives. She said hers included time as a federal judge, a court-appointed lawyer for criminal defendants who could not afford an attorney, a member of a federal commission on criminal sentencing and “being a Black woman, lucky inheritor of the civil rights dream.” read more
Jackson noted that she was born in 1970 in the aftermath of congressional passage of major civil rights laws aimed at curbing discrimination against Black people and other minorities and referenced the fact that her parents had experienced lawful racial segregation first-hand in their hometown of Miami.
Biden has aimed to bring more women and minorities and a broader range of backgrounds to the federal judiciary. His appointment of Jackson fulfilled a pledge he made during the 2020 presidential campaign to name a Black woman to the Supreme Court.
The other women to have served on the Supreme Court include current members Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan and Sotomayor, the retired Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died in 2020.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reminded the public that companies, institutions and individuals are prohibited from engaging in the foreign exchange business, pricing, advertising, receipting or making payments for goods and services without authorization.
The BoG in a public notice dated April 5, 2022, said this is in accordance with the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), which states that companies, institutions and individuals are prohibited from:
The bank said such violations were punishable on summary conviction, by a fine of up to seven hundred (700) penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than 18 months, or both.
The notice reiterated that the sole legal tender in the country is the Ghana cedi.
“Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with National Security and Law Enforcement Agencies, will continue to clamp down on illegal foreign exchange operations. All offenders shall be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the notice reads.
As Mykola Pavlyuk stood outside his apartment building in Bucha, tears streamed from his eyes, cutting through the grime on his face. He was desperate to share his story but shook from the trauma of it.
Pavlyuk, 53, was one of the surviving residents of the besieged Ukrainian town, northwest of Kyiv, where gruesome evidence of killings and torture has come to light following the withdrawal of Russian forces.
He told ABC News that when Russian troops came to his apartment building, they killed all the men who were younger than 50, including two of Pavlyuk’s friends.
Pavlyuk said he was given 20 minutes to bury them. He showed ABC News the shallow graves he hastily dug in the backyard, each marked with a plank of wood and topped with a religious icon. He wanted to give them whatever dignity he could.
“But it’s too shallow,” Pavlyuk said. “I just wanted to protect them from the dogs.”
Pavlyuk and other residents spoke with ABC News in the days after Russian forces departed Bucha, leaving an apparent trail of death, destruction, terror and trauma that has shaken the international community.
Hundreds of people were said to have been killed during the occupation. When ABC News arrived on Tuesday, bodies still lay in the streets.
World leaders have called for an investigation into whether war crimes, including genocide, were committed.
When Russian troops arrived in Bucha in late February, they asked everyone for documentation and forced the men to strip down naked to reveal any tattoos, according to Pavlyuk.
They immediately shot and killed anyone whom they deemed a threat, without asking any questions, he said.
The mayor of the nearby village of Motyzhyn, Olga Sukhenko, and her family appear to have met the same fate. ABC News witnessed their lifeless bodies in a wooded area.
Another Bucha resident, who declined to give her name, told ABC News her husband was also forced to remove his clothes to show whether he had any tattoos.
Russian soldiers took over Pavlyuk’s apartment building, turning the homes of Ukrainian families into wartime dormitories for drunk, violent thugs, he said. Rooms that Pavlyuk showed ABC News were strewn with blankets and old food.
Pavlyuk said he and his wife lived in the basement for more than month with little food or water, only leaving to cook on a stove outside.
He told ABC News they faced the constant fear of an arbitrary killing or a random act of violence, like when a friend was killed by a grenade he said was thrown as a joke by a drunk soldier.
The friend’s body parts lay outside on the ground for days until Pavlyuk was allowed to gather them, put them in a bag and bury them in a grave next to his two other friends, he said.
More bodies were dumped in a mass grave outside a church. Residents had gone out to collect some of the dead from the streets while the town was under Russian occupation.
The trench was filled with bodies in black plastic bags that lay on top of other victims, who were either wrapped in sheets or nothing at all. Locals told ABC News there could be as many as 90 people buried there.

Russian forces invaded neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, seizing territory and bombing entire cities. As the war grinds on, Russia faces strong resistance from Ukraine, whose troops managed to take back some territory in recent days as Russian forces retreated.
According to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venedyktova, at least 410 civilians have been found dead in Bucha and other recently recaptured towns near Ukraine’s capital, where there’s an ongoing investigation into possible war crimes committed by Russian forces.
Graphic images have emerged from Bucha showing unarmed individuals in civilian clothes who appear to have been executed with their hands or legs bound, sparking outrage from the United States as well as a number of other nations and institutions.
Russia has denied responsibility, calling the images “fake” and saying all of its units withdrew completely from Bucha around March 30.
An ABC News analysis of videos and satellite imagery confirms some of the bodies seen lying in the streets of Bucha were there as early as March 19, when the town was still occupied by Russian forces, contradicting Russia’s claims that the scene was “staged” after its troops left.
While in Bucha, ABC News encountered a Human Rights Watch team gathering evidence of war crimes.
“What we’ve seen so far and what we’ve heard from residents — what we’ve been documenting — is really horrific, including reports that Russian forces have pulled people out of their homes, briefly interrogated them and then executed them,” said Richard Weir, a researcher in the Crisis and Conflict division at Human Rights Watch.

A team from the International Committee of the Red Cross was also on scene in Bucha, assessing needs and delivering humanitarian aid.
“Humanitarian situation is dire,” ICRC spokesperson Alyona Synenko told ABC News. “We have seen extremely vulnerable people — elderly, people with limited mobility, people who are sick, who are alone in their unheated apartments with no electricity, with no running water, with medical needs.”
Bucha residents Tatyana Chernysh and her husband told ABC News they must have survived “by God’s will” when so many of their neighbors did not.
“At any time, the occupiers could enter our premises and do with us whatever they wanted,” said Chernysh’s husband, who said he was too frightened to give his first name. “It was terrifying. It was awful.”
The couple didn’t leave their house while Russian troops occupied the town. They said “good people” brought them food and medicine. Although the Russian soldiers camped away from their home, Chernysh and her husband said they heard unyielding gunfire and that stray bullets pockmarked their house.
Since the withdrawal of Russian forces and the recent arrival of aid, Chernysh and her husband have finally come out of hiding to see what remains of their battered town. They recalled seeing bodies strewn across the streets and sidewalks.
“It is obvious their intention was to destroy Ukraine, destroy our people, destroy our economy, destroy our culture,” Chernysh’s husband said of the Russian troops. “They claimed they came to liberate. They didn’t. They are terrorists.”
After surviving such “senseless” horror, the family said they “feel safe” and intend to stay in Bucha, despite a lack of electricity, running water and reliable communication.
“It’s where we live. We don’t want to yield our homes to occupiers,” Chernysh’s husband said. “It is our town. It is our home. We are going to stay.”
Although he admitted they might think twice if Russian forces return.
“Hopefully they won’t come back,” he added, “but with them you can never tell.”
The head of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), Mr. Emmanuel Onwubiko has condemned the secret trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as unconstitutional, primitive, illegal and obnoxious.
This was contained in a press release issued by Mr. Onwubiko on Thursday and made available to Tori Media.
In the statement, Onwubiko described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government as “days of military tribunal whereby citizens were simply chopped off the streets and made to face organised trial with predetermined outcome”.
He said: “Secret trial for the leader of the now proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) after he was abducted forcefully from Kenya in East Africa by Nigeria’s secret services in collaboration with their Kenyan counterparts, after being subjected to horrendous ordeals and illegal rendition which offends relevant international humanitarian laws, is unconstitutional, primitive, illegal and obnoxious.
“It is as if Nigeria is back to the days of military tribunal whereby citizens were simply chopped off the streets and made to face organised trial with predetermined outcome.
“The decision on the Nnamdi Kanu’s case is totally unlawful and irregular.
“If the government believes it has a case against him, which is very doubtful, why is government afraid of the light and has chosen to try him in the dark?
“This may escalate the security situation in the South East because most people will see this as not being transparent, open and justifiably carried out.
“Whatever outcome from such a secret trial is ab initio null, void and of no moment.
“We in the Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) reject this appalling demolition of judicial transparency by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration.
“This will adversely damage constitutional democracy,” he concluded.
Bruce Fein, the United States counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a criminal complaint with the International Criminal Court, ICC, against the Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court.
He accused Malami and Nyako of conspiring with President Muhammadu Buhari and Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, “to commit crimes against humanity”.
In a tweet on Thursday, April 7, Fein wrote: “Today, I filed a criminal complaint with the International Court of Justice against Nigerian Attorney General Malami and Federal High Court Justice Nyako charging them with conspiring with Nigerian President Buhari and Kenyan President Kenyatta to commit crimes against humanity.”
Kanu is expected to appear before Justice Nyako on Friday, April 8, for charges bordering on terrorism.
Pope Francis slammed the ‘atrocities’ and ‘ever more horrendous cruelties’ by Russian forces in Ukraine as he prayed with child refugees this morning.
The pontiff also kissed a ragged Ukrainian flag brought from Bucha, the Kyiv suburb where war crimes are alleged to have taken place in recent days.
He said: ‘The recent news about the war in Ukraine, instead of bringing relief and hope, instead attests to new atrocities, such as the Bucha massacre.
‘Ever more horrendous cruelties, also perpetrated against defenceless civilians, women and children. These are victims whose innocent blood cries out to heaven and begs for mercy’, AFP reported.
The pope looked to the children and said: ‘These children had to flee in order to arrive in a safe land. This is the fruit of war. Let’s not forget them and let’s not forget the Ukrainian people.’
He also lamented the ‘powerlessness’ of international organisations and said ‘the old history of competing great powers’ has continued despite the hope which followed World War Two.
He pleaded with Putin in March: ‘In the name of God I ask you, stop this massacre.’
Images of what are claimed to be civilian massacres carried out by Russian forces in Bucha before they withdrew have attracted public outcry.
President Zelensky described the targeting of innocent Ukrainians, including women and children, as ‘war crimes’ and ‘genocide’.
Zamfara Sate Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has distributed 260 cars including Cadillac to the traditional rulers in the state.
The distribution was done by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, at Government House, Gusau on Wednesday.
The Sultan expressed gratitude to Matawalle for his interest in the welfare of the traditional institution, which he said still remains the thread that holds society together.
He also called on the beneficiaries of the gesture to continue supporting the administration of Governor Matawalle by rendering their best in ending the challenges facing the people.
Matawalle said the gesture was done in recognition of the status of the traditional institution as the custodians of religion and culture and vehicle of cohesion and peace in societies.
“It is in view of the high esteem with which my administration regards our traditional leaders and institutions that we decided to procure brand new cars, Cadillac 2019 Model, for 17 Emirs, 13 Senior District Heads and 230 District Heads across the State,” the Governor said.
Burkina Faso’s former president, Blaise Compaore has been sentenced to life imprisonment for complicity in the 1987 murder of his predecessor Thomas Sankara in a coup, a military tribunal ruled on Wednesday, April 6.
The charismatic Marxist revolutionary Sankara was gunned down in the West African nation’s capital Ouagadougou at the age of 37, four years after he took power during the 1987 coup d’état that brought Compaoré to power.
Thomas Sankara
Compaore was charged in absentia along with his former head of security Hyacinthe Kafando, who was also sentenced to life imprisonment. Both have previously denied any involvement in Sankara’s death along with 12 other defendants accused of involvement in the plot, three of whom were declared innocent on Wednesday.
“The court finds Blaise Compaoré and Hyacinthe Kafando guilty of attack on state security, complicity in murder and concealment of a corpse,” the tribunal said in its ruling.
Compaore went on to rule for 27 years before being ousted in another coup in 2014 and fleeing to Ivory Coast, where he is still believed to live.
Sankara took power on a promise to thwart corruption and post-colonial influences, denouncing foreign aid as a control mechanism. He rolled out mass vaccination against polio, banned female circumcision and polygamy, and was one of the first African leaders to publicly recognise the growing AIDS epidemic as a threat for the continent.
A former fighter pilot, Sankara won public support in the impoverished nation by selling a government fleet of Mercedes, lowering the pay of well-off public servants and forbidding first class state travel.
He cut his own salary, refused to work with air conditioning and jogged through Ouagadougou unaccompanied.
A team of medical experts in Nairobi, Kenya, has designed an innovative device that helps ease menstrual pains.
NTV Kenya said Wednesday, April 6, that the device, which is already in circulation at a moderate price has leads that are connected to some sticky pads called electrodes, which help deliver small electrical impulses to the painful area of a woman’s body and subsequently ease the pain.
One of the leading innovators of the device, who is also the chief executive and co-founder of Swift Wellness, Peter Arina, said watching his friend struggle with menstrual pain prompted him to devise a solution.
Arina said: “The device has leads connected to sticky pads called electrodes. To relieve pain, you attach the pads directly to your skin and turn the device on. The pads will deliver small electrical impulses to the area in pain.”
According to the innovators, the electrical impulses are capable of reducing the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles. They may also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.
The health informatics expert reveals that the device’s working mechanism is inspired by a science called gateway control theory, which dictates that in the human body, an external impulse is given priority over an internal impulse.
During menstruation, the pain from the menstrual periods is the internal impulse, and it travels all the way to the brain such that when you place the electrodes and the impulse transmission starts, the external impulse is sent to the brain, which forces it to focus on the external impulse, thereby reducing pain from the abdomen.
A co-author of the invention and general practitioner at Karen Hospital, Dr Jane Wavinya said: “During menstrual periods, there are hormones produced called prostaglandins that cause pain. Pain is also caused by uterine contractions and ischaemia, which results from a mechanism where the blood vessels in the uterus constrict, reducing blood supply to the uterus.”
She noted that women with a tendency to produce more blood clots are also predisposed to more pain because the uterus has to contract more to expel these blood clots. She explains that besides disrupting the pain pathway to the brain, the electrical stimulation also stimulates the production of endorphins, the feel-good hormones which relieve pain and boost moods.
“We have sold 207 units so far. We have received orders in the evenings from clients who are stuck to their seats because of the pain. We have made deliveries at night, and we have had to deal with clients agitated because of pain,” Mr Arina added.
A physiotherapist at Aga Khan University Hospital, Dr Irene Onyimbo, says the mechanism used by the device is safe and similar to the devices they use to manage pain in physiotherapy.
“We use Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation technology to treat body pains,” she says.
Although it is safe for most people, experts recommend that pregnant women should avoid using TENS in the abdominal and pelvic regions while applying electrodes to the head or neck of people with epilepsy as this could induce seizures.
People with heart problems and those with another type of electrical implant should also avoid it. The duration of pain relief after using the TENS unit can vary.
Some people may experience pain as soon as they switch off the device while others experience adequate relief for up to 24 hours. Children and teenagers under 16 are exempt from using the device, and it cannot be used underwater.
The device comes with a manual, its electrodes and a charger. Its battery lasts for six hours if used continuously and it has to be charged fully before use.
“Use it for 30 minutes, take a one-hour break, and use it again depending on your pain. Pressing on the M (mode) button, you can adjust the frequency depending on your pain. You can use it at work, working out, and even while sleeping,” Dr Wavinya said.
It has been claimed that Manchester United and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo pays his partner Georgina Rodriguez €100,000 per month to fund her lavish lifestyle
The Portuguese striker is one of the best-paid players in world football, having signed a bumper deal when he returned to United in Old Trafford, and earns a staggering £385,000 per week.
According to Catalan publication El Nacional, the €100,000 (£83,000) sum relates to “expenses and care of the children”. The couple had their first child together in late 2017, a daughter named Alana, while Ronaldo has older children from surrogates.
As a stay-at-home mum, Italian publication Corriere dello Sport also claimed that Ronaldo is happy to give 26-year-old Rodriguez a hefty wedge every month as she also looks after surrogate twins Eva and Mateo and Cristiano Jr.
Rodriguez met Ronaldo, who she describes as her “Prince Charming”, in 2016, when she was working at a Gucci store in Madrid, and they have been together since then.
In one of the biggest cocaine hauls in UK history, authorities have confiscated nearly four tonnes of cocaine found in boxes of bananas in Southampton.
Authorities say it is the largest seizure of the Class A substance in the UK for seven years, according to the Home Office.
The containers recently arrived in the Southampton’s dock from Colombia.
Once the goods arrived, the UK’s Border Force and National Crime Agency (NCA) targeted them for inspection where they discovered more than 3.7 tonnes of cocaine hydrochloride, used to make crack cocaine, concealed within a container of 20 pallets of bananas.
The white powdery substance estimated to have a value of around £300 million was found on March 17, 2022, authorities said on Wednesday, April 6.
Reacting to the development, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel said:
‘This is the largest seizure of cocaine in the UK since 2015. It should serve as a warning to anyone trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the country that we are out to get them.
‘A key focus of our beating crime plan is disrupting the supply chain and relentless pursuit of the criminals peddling these narcotics, making the drugs market a low-reward high risk enterprise.
‘The police and Border Force have my 100% backing to use all available powers to stop devastating drugs from coming into our neighbourhoods and destroying lives.’
The NCA branded the seizure ‘monumental’ and said it denied organised crime groups massive profits.
‘There’s no doubt some of this cocaine would have been cut up and sold across UK streets, feeding crime and misery in our communities’, Peter Stevens, the organisation’s regional head of investigations, said.
The shirt Diego Maradona wore in the game against England when he scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal is expected to be sold for at least £4million at auction.
Maradona scored two of the most memorable goals in World Cup history to knock the Three Lions out at the quarter-final stage in the 1986 tournament in Mexico.
During the quarter-final, the late great former Argentina captain rose above Peter Shilton to punch his side into the lead at the Azteca Stadium and the officials failed to spot that he had handled the ball.
At the time, the forward described the goal as being made “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God”.
The mercurial Napoli legend swapped shirts with England midfielder Steve Hodge after the last-eight showdown.
The shirt has been on loan to the National Football Museum in Manchester, but will be on display at Sotheby’s in London for a bidding period between April 20th to May 4th and it will not come cheap.
Brahm Wachter, head of Streetwear and modern collectables at Sotheby’s, said: “The Hand of God is truly a singular moment not only in the history of sports, but in the history of the 20th century.
“The moment resonated far beyond the world of football, coming soon after the Falklands conflict, and has in turn inspired books, films, and documentaries. Maradona is now remembered as one of the greatest to ever play the game of football – and this particular game is an instrumental part of his legacy.
“Of course, not only was ‘The Hand of God’ goal scored in this game, but also, the ‘Goal of the Century’ which is widely considered to be one of the greatest individual goals of all time.”
A woman said she landed in hospital and needed emergency surgery because she held in farts around her boyfriend for two years.
Cara Clarke, 19, was at work when she developed “extreme stomach pain” on Tuesday, March 29.
She was rushed to a hospital where she was diagnosed with appendicitis.
It turned out the condition can be triggered by blockages and pressure build-up. Cara believes her suppressed farts around her boyfriend and the subsequent pressure build-up is what led to her condition.
The barista, who has been with her 21-year-old boyfriend Kyle Duffy for two years, recalled he was “dying laughing” after finding her efforts not to fart in his presence left her needing surgery.
Cara vowed to just “let it out from now on”, after admitting she had no idea how dangerous holding in fart could be.
Cara, from Louth, Ireland, said: “I do hold in my farts but I didn’t think I would be in hospital over it.
“I’m pretty easy-going other than the burps and farts. I was at work on Tuesday and I had this real extreme pain in my stomach.
“I went to the doctor in hysterics and he referred me straight to the hospital. I was in so much pain I couldn’t hold in my tears.
“My doctor said to me ‘I’m so, so sorry you’re in so much pain’. I was limping when I was walking all hunched over.
“At hospital, I started blaming my boyfriend because I do always hold my farts in around him. We’ve been together two years and it’s still the case.
“Kyle was dying laughing. He honestly didn’t know what to say. He said, ‘God, people are going to think you’re afraid of everything with me.'”
“At this stage, I’ll just have to let it out from now on.”
Cara left the hospital two days later, on Thursday evening, March 31.
She said: “It wasn’t one of those hectic surgeries that it used to be a while ago. I’m on strong painkillers and I should be back to work in the next week or so.
“I’m just chilling now and taking advantage of everyone catering for me.”
Just last month, singer Viviane de Queiroz Pereira, known by her stage name Pocah, was hospitalised after she held in fart all day while with her boyfriend
The United States has pledged $100 million (£75m) in anti-armour weapons to Ukraine after Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded for military assistance to help destroy Russian tanks, UK Telegraph reports.
President Joe Biden is also preparing to impose new sanctions on Russia on Wednesday, including a ban on all new investments, following fresh evidence of war crimes in the city of Bucha.
The Pentagon said the extra funding would be used “to meet an urgent Ukrainian need for additional Javelin anti-armour systems.”
The Javelin is a shoulder-fired portable missile system, manufactured in the US at a cost of $80,000 apiece, which has proven invaluable in holding back the columns of Russian tanks.
The new sanctions will target the Kremlin’s financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, as well as government officials and their family members, the White House said.
“The goal is to force them to make a choice. The biggest part of our objective here is to deplete the resources that Putin has to continue his war against Ukraine,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
US military aid to Ukraine now comes to “more than $1.7 billion since the beginning of Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked invasion on February 24”, and more than $2.4 billion since the beginning of Mr Biden’s term in office, she added.
Separately, the Treasury Department will block any Russian government debt payments with dollars from accounts at US financial institutions, making it harder for Russia to meet its financial obligations.
The European Commission has proposed new sanctions including banning Russian coal imports and halting trade worth nearly £16.6 billion in retaliation over the atrocities in Bucha.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, compared the behaviour of Russian troops to that of the Nazis in an impassioned speech by videolink to the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday.
“They cut off limbs, slashed their throats, women were raped and killed in front of their children,” Zelensky said.
In towns around Kyiv, civilians had been tortured, thrown down wells, blown up with grenades in their apartments and crushed to death by tanks while in cars, he said.
Those who carried out the killings and those who gave the orders “must be brought to justice immediately for war crimes” in front of a tribunal similar to the Nuremberg trials after the Second World War, he said.
Photos and video footage from Bucha, 16 miles north-west of Kyiv, show unarmed civilians shot in the head at close range with their hands tied behind their backs.
Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, said the images revealed “not the random act of a rogue unit” but “a deliberate campaign to kill, to torture, to rape, to commit atrocities.”
The reports of atrocities were “more than credible,” he said.
The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court at The Hague opened an investigation a month ago into possible war crimes in Ukraine.
Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s UN ambassador, claimed that while Bucha was under Russian control, “not a single local person has suffered from any violent action.”
Reiterating what the Kremlin has contended for days, he said that video footage of bodies in the streets was “a crude forgery” staged by the Ukrainians.
Over 10 members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), including their top commanders have been executed by its affiliate, Boko Haram, officially known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād (JAS).
According to reports, the incident happened in the North East of Lake Chad recently.
The Bakura Buduma-led Boko Haram faction in Lake Chad overpowered the ISWAP insurgents in a gun battle which led to the killing of many fighters in the river bank between Kadunan Ruwa and Kandahar axis of Niger Republic.
Many fighters reportedly drowned in the water while ten ISWAP fighters were apprehended alive by the Buduma-led faction. Also, two ISWAP top commanders were interrogated before being taken to an unknown destination and slaughtered.
A top ranking officer of the Buduma group said in a video that God has continued to give them the opportunity to defeat their enemies (ISWAP).
His words, “We are the Mujahideens from the Jama’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihad faction in Lake Chad. As you are aware, there have been an intensified infighting between we and our enemies for the past few months and Allah has been giving us victories to eliminate them.
“We have arrested about ten of them including some of their top commanders and we have asked them why they are waging war against us. And the Commander said, they don’t have any reason but they are just fighting us.
“Initially, we are doing the same thing and practicing the same religion before you deviated from all the teachings.
“We are therefore assuring you that Almighty God will continue to give us victory to eliminate all of you from the surface of earth.”
The violent clashes between the two groups of the terrorists has continued, especially in the axis of Lake Chad, Abadam, Niger Republic, Sambisa forest and Mandara Mountain, with many casualties recorded so far on both sides within the last one year.
In March, the JAS terrorists loyal to Buduma, ambushed and eliminated about 45 terrorists in Yauma Wango and Ngaama, in Abadam Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State in Nigeria.
Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un has said that North Korea will nuke South Korea if it violates “even an inch” of its territory.
The threat was issued just after the secretive country ramped up its ballistic missile testing with nine launches so far this year.
State media quotes Kim as saying;
“If the South Korean army were to injure even an inch of our land, they would face a catastrophe that we had never imagined before.
“If a situation arises where South Korea chooses a military confrontation with us, it will inevitably force our nuclear warfare force to carry out its mission.
“This is not just a threat. This is a detailed explanation of our reaction to possible reckless military action by south Korea.”
Her outburst was prompted by comments from South Korea’s defence minister which said the country now has significantly improved missiles.
These now have “the ability to accurately and quickly hit any target in North Korea” said Suh Wook.
Yo-jong who’s a senior official in the government and ruling party, also said Suh’s comments were a “very big mistake”. She said Pyongyang opposes war, which would leave the peninsula in ruins, and does not view South Korea as its principal enemy.
She added;
“But if south Korea, for any reason – whether or not it is blinded by misjudgment – opts for such military action as ‘preemptive strike’ the situation will change.
“In that case, south Korea itself will become a target.
“The senseless and scum-like guy dare mention a ‘preemptive strike’ at a nuclear weapons state.
“South Korea may face a serious threat owing to the reckless remarks made by its defence minister.”
Yo-jong is seen as her brother’s closest confidant and has been confirmed as his top official for relations with the South.
North Korea has test-fired a range of increasingly powerful missiles this year. Officials in Seoul and Washington fear it may be preparing to resume testing nuclear weapons for the first time since 2017 amid stalled negotiations.
Umar Muda, a member of the House of Representatives has introduced a bill to prohibit cross-dressing in Nigeria.
The bill, read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, April 5, seeks to ban cross-dressing with the exemption of those using it for entertainment.
If the proposed law is passed, cross-dressers will be sentenced to 6 months in prison.
“A person engaging in cross-dressing is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment of 6 months or to a fine of five hundred thousand naira,” the bill says.
The bill seeks to amend the same-sex marriage (prohibition) act of 2013 by including cross-dressing as one of the offences under the act.
Recall that same-sex couples and gay persons face 14 years in jail if convicted by a court.
Tiger Woods has confirmed he plans to make his long-awaited return to action at The Masters on Thursday April 7.
Woods, a five-time green jacket winner, has not featured in a top-level event since playing at Augusta National in November 2020, with the former world No 1 unable to compete on the PGA Tour since suffering career-threatening injuries in a serious car crash last February.
The 15-time major champion made an impressive comeback alongside his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship in December but was still non-committal on a return date when discussing his future at the Genesis Invitational in February, saying he “didn’t know” when he would next compete.
Following further practice time on Monday April 4, the five-time champion announced on Tuesday he is ready to tee it up at The Masters, starting on Thursday live on Sky Sports.
“As of right now I feel like I am going to play,” Woods told the media on Tuesday. “I’m going to play nine more holes tomorrow. My recovery has been good. I’ve been very excited about how I’ve recovered each and every day.”
Woods described his rehabilitation as the toughest of his career, admitting his initial goal was “just looking forward to getting outside” after being immobile for several months.
The vast majority of central banks in the world are considering launching a central bank digital currency (CBDC), according to analysts at professional services and accounting firm, PwC.
In the firm’s annual index of CBDCs and stablecoins, which was released on Tuesday, the analysts stated: “CBDCs will facilitate more effective, lower cost and 24/7/365 cross-border payments for the financial services industry.
“We expect that CBDCs will greatly benefit cross-border transactions and economies of all relevant jurisdictions.”
Overall, retail CBDC projects, which are digital currencies designed for public use, have reached greater maturity levels than wholesale projects, which are digital currencies used by financial institutions that have accounts with central banks,” the report noted.
There has been an increase in wholesale pilots in recent years though, analysts said.
China became the first major economy to pilot a retail CBDC in 2020 with the digital yuan. The pilot is running in 12 cities as of March 2022.
The Sand Dollar, issued by the Central Bank of the Bahamas as legal tender in October 2020, was the first retail project of its kind. Nigeria’s central bank launched the first CBDC in Africa, the eNaira, shortly afterwards.
On the wholesale side, PwC ranked the combined effort from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Bank of Thailand to launch mBridge as the top product.
The central banks are working to develop a proof-of-concept prototype to enable real-time, cross-border foreign exchange payments on distributed ledger technology.
Other top projects include efforts by Canada, Singapore, France and South Africa.
“Wholesale CBDCs have the potential to streamline security token post-trade operations through atomic delivery-versus-payment and increase the market efficiency for several asset classes,” said PwC France and Maghreb Financial Services Risk and Blockchain Partner, Benoit Sureau.
PwC analysts for the first time included a stablecoin overview in the annual CBDC index report, noting that privately issued tokens will continue to evolve and exist alongside CBDCs.
Stablecoins reached a market capitalization of around $190 billion in early 2022 and will continue to grow as the tokens offer many of the same benefits as a CBDC without the surveillance that comes with a government-issued currency, the report noted.
Transparency around reserve assets, particularly for stablecoins that are backed with fiat currency, will be a major concern going forward, though, as the asset class continues to grow and regulation ramps up, analysts added.
“The role of the stablecoin in the crypto markets has and will continue to evolve as adoption of crypto increases, forcing a more prominent role of stablecoins across the larger financial ecosystem.
“Regulation will only strengthen the importance and give credence to the role that stablecoins will play,” said Matt Blumenfeld, director and digital asset specialist at PwC.
More than 7.1 million people are estimated to have been internally displaced by Russia’s war in Ukraine, having fled their homes but remained in the country, the United Nations said Tuesday, April 5.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, causing millions to flee their homes — including more than 4.2 million Ukrainians who have left the country entirely.
The new figure issued by the UN’s International Organization for Migration is up from the 6.48 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) estimated in a first study by the IOM on March 16.
“People continue to flee their homes because of war, and the humanitarian needs on the ground continue to soar,” said IOM director general Antonio Vitorino.
“Humanitarian corridors are urgently needed to allow the safe evacuation of civilians and ensure the safe transportation and delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid in order to rapidly assist those internally displaced.”
