Disgraced movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein’s accusers are awarded nearly $19m in compensation fund

The New York Attorney General’s office has announced a nearly $19 million settlement for women who were sexually abused and harassed by imprisoned former movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein, 68.

“Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company failed their female employees. After all the harassment, threats, and discrimination, their victims are finally receiving some justice,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement on Tuesday, June 30.

The settlement stems from a 2018 civil rights lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General’s office against Weinstein, Robert Weinstein, and the Weinstein companies at large for “egregious violations of New York’s civil rights, human rights, and business laws,” the attorney’s office said at the time.

Under the plan, a $18,875,000 victims’ compensation fund will be created and distributed among “women who experienced a hostile work environment, sexual harassment, and gender-based discrimination while working at The Weinstein Company, as well as sexual abuse by Harvey Weinstein,” the attorney general’s office said.

As part of the agreement, survivors will also be released from confidentiality, non-disclosure, or non-disparagement agreements with The Weinstein Company or any of the former representatives of the company related to any sexual misconduct by Weinstein. They will now be free to tell their stories without fear of retribution, prosecutors said.

But the agreement must still be approved by the district court and the bankruptcy court that is presiding over The Weinstein Company’s bankruptcy case.

“This agreement is a win for every woman who has experienced sexual harassment, discrimination, intimidation, or retaliation by her employer,” New York Attorney, General Letitia James said.

Reacting to the agreement, Douglas H. Wigdor and Kevin Mintzer, the attorneys for several of Harvey Weinstein’s alleged victims disagreed with the settlement and consider it deeply ‘unfair’ because Weinsten doesn’t not accept responsibility for his actions.

“The proposed settlement is a complete sellout of the Weinstein survivors and we are surprised that the Attorney General could somehow boast about a proposal that fails on so many different levels,” the attorneys told CNN in a statement.

“We are completely astounded that the Attorney General is taking a victory lap for this unfair and inequitable proposal, and on behalf of our clients, we will be vigorously objecting in court,” they added.

Weinstein is serving 23 years at Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Alden, New York, after being convicted of committing a criminal sex act in the first degree and rape in the third degree.

The disgraced movie mogul is also facing several charges in Los Angeles, including forcible rape, sexual penetration by use of force, and sexual battery. Weinstein has denied all the allegations.

Jealous family dogs mauls newborn twin girls to death

Newborn twin sisters died after they were savagely attacked by their family dog in Brazil. The premature twin girls — Anne and Analú — were mauled to death by the animal when their mother, Elaine Novais, left them briefly to speak to a neighbor.

According to The Sun, the baby girls died on June 23, the same day they were scheduled to be born by cesarean. But they arrived a month early.

The dog involved in the killing of the twins is Labrador and American Foxhound mix. The animal had been with the family for five years, and has been described usually docile. However, since the arrival of Anne and Analú, the dog became jealous after losing affection from its owners.

The reports claimed on the day of the incident that happened in Piripá, in the northeastern state of Bahia, the 29-year-old mother of the twins rushed to her bedroom where the 26 day-old babies lay after hearing their cries. After reaching the room, she pulled the dog away from the children but the animal had already critically damaged the abdomen of the two.

They were rushed to the hospital, however, doctors said that one of the babies died even before reaching the hospital while the other one suffered a cardiac arrest and the medical team could not save her.

COVID-19: ”It was horrific”- Nigerian author, Ife Durosinmi-Etti who survived COVID-19, shares her story

Nigerian Author/Sales and marketing expert, Ife Durosinmi Etti, has shared her story of how she survived the dreaded viral disease, COVID-19.

In a post she shared on her Instagram page, Ife recounted how she started feeling sick and went to the hospital on June 1st. There she did a test and afterwards was diagnosed of a bacterial infection. She was later placed on admission because the drugs administered on her weren’t working. She said it was one of the doctors that later suggested she gets tested for COVID-19.

The COVID-19 test result came back positive and according to her, the experience afterwards was ”Horrific”. After receiving treatment, she tested negative on June 27.

Read her story below

If I had 10,000 tongues, it still wouldn’t be enough, Na re ke Le mooooo! Last week, someone sent me a message and said, Ife, you’re the ‘E’ in extra and I love it.. I’ve accepted the title.

June tested my existence. From the first day to the end! Everyday was a horror movie. On the first of June, I woke up in soooo much pain! It started with headaches first, then body pains. I went into the hospital and I was diagnosed of a bacterial infection.

I wasn’t surprised with the result because someone who was also with me had also tested for bacterial infection in a totally different hospital, so I just took the meds they gave me and went home. Later that evening, my head was pounding like a machine. My body felt like someone was using a hammer to hit it all over. My temperature was extremely high, the pain all over was UNBEARABLE! I went back into the hospital at midnight, this time, I was admitted.

They gave me more pain meds through IV… NOTHING WORKED. I was restless, in pain, I begged for sleeping pills so I could forget the pain. Obviously, they didn’t give me. I was wide awake all night.

The next day… I was discharged with a new set of meds. All they gave me didn’t work. I decided to chest it. I went back on Friday and Saturday to complain that I wasn’t getting better… at this point, I couldn’t really talk again. It felt like I had 3 safety pins in my throat and the inner part of my neck was sewn together. I couldn’t talk..nothing.

Then a doctor randomly said I should just try to get tested for COVID since nothing was working, she then gave me a number to one of the centers on the island. I called them, till date, they didn’t get back to me.

I then decided to take matters into my own hands.. I had an AGS Tribe members husband who was a doctor, I called him immediately to tell him I wanted to get tested, unfortunately, he wasn’t on land, so he couldn’t test me… then one of my egbons sent a doctor to my house that night… I got tested with the Rapid Antigen test and I was POSITIVE! My life flashed before my eyes…

Once I found out. I called my hospital… the one that admitted me to let them know, so they could disinfect the place etc and also check if I could get any medical care from them. Alas, they told me there was a care package they sent to their patients etc and asked for my address, that they’d get it delivered… 30mins later, I got a call that they wouldn’t be delivering it again because my result wasn’t from NIMR or NCDC. I wept! They literarily abandoned me.

My self isolation started. The pain was continuous. I had to buy Zithromax 500mg (azithromycin), Zinc 10mg, Vit c 1000(effervescent) 1 daily
Methodex cough syrup
Then the chloroquine (pls don’t buy these drugs without proper medical diagnosis)

Anytime I took the Methodex, it felt like I was drinking fire! I cried. Jumped everything each time I took it! I was porging uncontrollably. There was a time I felt like I wanted to poo, I got up and I saw the poo on the floor! I couldn’t even laugh, poo would come out. I couldn’t sit up or hold a conversation for 30mins, I’ll be dizzy and weak. It was a NIGHTMARE! Literarily one month of terror. The dizziness didn’t stop. I also had to do the hot water and aboliki steam inhalation, drink the lemon and ginger mix. Everything.

On the 15th, I went to NIMR to do another test, I was still positive. I couldn’t even stand straight. It was horrific. I sent a message to my doctor to let them know I now had the result from NIMR and it was still positive. The response I got was ‘OK’, no empathy, no nothing, no ‘hope you feel better’ nothing. I’m so thankful for the Doctor who got me tested and the AGS members husband, Dr. Kayode who literally took care of me like…. they picked up my calls at midnight, early morning. They never got tired. Always advising me and telling me what to use or buy! It was a horrific period. On top of everything, my sister passed on, on my late brothers birthday, Aunty Ibidun passed, Lamide was murdered, many died from COVID… June was a huge mess.

But I’m moving on. Finally, on the 27th, I was tested negative and I’m just here to thank God and you all know that COVID19 is BLOODY REAL! I did everything, washed my hands, sanitized, used masks and shields but I still got it AT HOME. I do not wish the pain I felt in the last month on my enemy! Please stay safe. You don’t know how your body will react to the virus. Mine was crazy but I’m thankful my breathing wasn’t affected.

During this time, my support system was LIT! @ajilawson of @kstonecc kept on calling to pray with me, @funkebucknor @derojuoa, thank you so much for the communion. @tunde_ode , my friends, my family, Lord, I’m grateful. God bless you all. Even though I was in isolation, I never felt alone. Thankful

PS: I tried to do video recordings of how I felt every 3 days, maybe I’ll share them later.

One week, two troubles

In just the space of about one week Nigeria, “the giant of Africa”, was involved in no less than two, maybe three, diplomatic debacles, each of which can be traced to an incremental reduction in the quality of governance over so many years that has now resulted in the country’s loss of influence among Nigerians and the rest of the world.

The first piece of depressing news came out of the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where the Nigerian High Commission was besieged by what could be described as a well-organised mob. In plain sight of security agents, a residential building in the precinct of the High Commission came under direct attack as it was demolished in gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to which Ghana is a signatory.

Under this Convention, the premises of a foreign mission are inviolable and can only be accessed with permission. Acting otherwise could even be viewed as an act of war that could at the very least lead to a breakdown in relations between concerned countries. But not only were what might be considered the hallowed grounds of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana violated, but parts of its residential area were also reduced to rubble under the onslaught of bulldozers in the service of Ghanaian citizens.

An attack like this could easily get out of hand as happened in Libya after the ouster of Muammar Ghaddafi when the American Embassy in Tripoli was attacked and the ambassador was murdered in cold blood. Any of the Nigerian occupants of the residential building could have been injured or, even worse, killed given the belligerence that characterized the incident as captured on available video footage.

It stretches credulity that Ghanaian authorities could not be summoned early enough to respond to the distressed cry of the Nigerian occupants of the building for the period the attack lasted. We are not here talking of some surreptitious activity by ordinary thugs or petty hoodlums. What was on display was organised thuggery executed with the probable connivance of the Ghanaian authorities.

The goal was apparently to embarrass the Nigerian government for its alleged failure to live up to its responsibilities. For the point at issue, one line of narrative claims is that the lease Nigeria took on this property in which it houses her diplomats had lapsed without the High Commission either renewing it or moving out. Not only did Nigeria fail or refuse to do either of this, it went ahead to construct additional structures on the property that is owned by the Osu Traditional Chieftaincy, a private entity that resorted to self-help in the apparent face of official, though foreign, impunity.

If the claim of the expired lease is true, then the authorities in Ghana could not have executed the demolition without ruffling diplomatic feathers and risking the ire of Nigeria. Which then stands to reason that what Ghana could not do by direct use of force, it did through the moral authority and outrage of her private citizens. Ghana has, however, in the wake of the attack regretted the action of the perpetrators of this heinous act while admitting that Nigeria bought the piece of land on which the High Commission constructed its property 20 years ago.

Except Ghana is engaged in some tongue-in-cheek exoneration of Nigeria from the irresponsibility of not paying due rent, then it ought to bring the full weight of the law to bear on the perpetrators of the demolition. This should be in addition to its apologies to Nigeria and promised reconstruction of the demolished portion of the High Commission. But should it turn out that Ghana is only trying to help Nigeria save face after embarrassing her publicly, then it serves Nigeria right as this country has no business conducting itself as outlaws outside her borders.

An increasing number of Nigeria’s missions abroad appear distressed with reports of staff with a backlog of unpaid salaries working in dilapidated buildings and even rundown office spaces that aggravate the already deplorable image of the country in certain quarters abroad. For effective and proper management of resources, including cost-saving, Nigeria could cut down on the number of its diplomatic missions or reduce the status of some.

We do not need ambassadors in every nook and cranny of the world. In some cases, there is no justification for this proliferation of embassies other than to provide jobs for the boys, compensating associates, cronies and friends among scores of other political lackeys and journeymen and women masquerading as diplomats. Let us do this and save ourselves the embarrassments of angry creditors setting thugs on diplomatic staff and thereby putting diplomats lives in harm’s way. The dust from the demolition job in Accra had hardly settled than there was an invasion of the Nigerian embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.

This time the attackers are (wait for this) Nigerians protesting against their treatment in the hands of Indonesian immigration agents; in this instance, leading to the death of a Nigerian who allegedly plunged to his death from the ninth floor of a building while running away from agents that wanted to arrest him. It is not at all clear how these angry Nigerians thought the embassy could have been of help.

But their sense of moral outrage was such that their only line of defence was to make Nigeria accountable for their situation. In expressing their grievances, they set upon the embassy’s property, vandalising vehicles and desecrating the Nigerian flag. While such actions are neither new nor peculiar to the embassy officials in Jakarta, the protesters need to know that being Nigerians does not excuse any anti-social behaviour nor can an embassy provide cover from the law for Nigerians thought to have violated the laws of their host nations.

It is sheer foolishness to think otherwise. Fugitive or no fugitive, foolish or not, it is a reflection of a high level of cynicism that the gap between the rulers and the led has so widened that it has, in turn, resulted in a loss of faith in Nigeria as a country worth living in or dying for. This is why Nigerians will without scruples sooner deny their country than affirm faith in her survival. Nigerians must begin to reappraise their relationship with their country and not tie their disillusionment with the country’s leaders to the very idea of having faith in Nigeria as a country.

Nigerian leaders are not Nigeria and their conduct at any time, in or out of office, should not be viewed as representative of the Nigerian character, dream and worldview. What could have been a third incident was again a self-infliction, namely, the reported closure of the Nigerian embassy in Germany. What’s this about? Another non-payment of lease disguised as the need for repair work? What a week!

India/China tensions: India bans TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps

tiktok deal

The Indian government has banned 59 Chinese mobile applications, including top social media platforms such as TikTok, Helo and WeChat, to counter the threat posed by these applications to its “sovereignty and security”.

The ban came amid escalating tensions along the disputed border between the two countries. Both India and China deployed more troops to the Ladakh region in June and Satellite images also appear to show that China has built new structures overlooking the Himalayan border region.

The Indian government which cited complaints about data on Indian users being transferred abroad without authorisation, said the ban was imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009.

India’s Ministry of Information Technology said in its statement;

“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.”

Reacting to the ban, TikTok said in a statement;

Building empowered local management teams in the countries where TikTok operates, including India, has been critical to our global success.

“While the Government of India has issued an interim order to block 59 apps, our team of around 2,000 employees in India is committed to working with the government to demonstrate our dedication to user security and our commitment to the country overall.

“We are proud to provide hundreds of millions of users in India – and around the world – a creative platform for their stories, performances, education, and, often, a way to make their livelihood.”

India is TikTok’s biggest foreign market, with an estimated 120 million users. While India’s diplomatic tensions with China are starting to have a knock-on effect on business and tech, a complete decoupling may be easier said than done. China dominates India’s massive internet market — the world’s second largest, with close to 600 million users, both in hardware and software.

Relations between the world’s two most populous nations have been strained following the deaths of 20 Indian troops in hand-to-hand fighting with their Chinese counterparts on the western end of the high-altitude, contested border in mid-June.

‘What is happening to Tinubu is a judgment of God. He’ll vomit everything he has stolen’ – Bode George blows hot

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Olabode George, has slammed former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, saying the All Progressive Congress party leader is responsible for the reported crisis in the ruling party

Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP,  slammed Tinubu for allegedly mishandling the affairs of Lagos State, stating ”his time of reckoning was near and he’ll vomit everything he’s stolen.”

Bode George was reacting to Tinubu’s Saturday statement  addressing his purported 2023 presidential ambition and the crisis that has befallen the APC.

In the statement, Tinubu said he hadn’t made up his mind as to a 2023 presidential ambition but was rather focused on helping Nigerians during the current economic crisis caused by Covid-19.

Speaking in an interview with The IndependentNg published on Monday June 29, Chief Bode George said;

“From the very beginning, I used to tell them that the party APC is a congregation of strange bedfellows. When you have a big party like that and someone wants to hijack it, there will be problem.”

“First of all, it is a misnomer in a presidential system for a man who is not elected into any position to come out and say he is the National leader of the party.”

“How is that possible? There is only one National leader of the party and that is the President. How can a ragamuffin from somewhere just wake up and say he is the National leader and not the President? What does that mean?

” We saw the way Chief John Odigie- Oyegun was removed as national chairman. To me, what is happening to Tinubu is a judgment of God. You think you can appropriate the whole country’s resources like he did in Lagos state to your own family?”

” It cannot work! I believe nemesis is catching up with Tinubu. We warned him but he refused to listen. The Yorubas have a saying that a child who fails to listen to corrections at home will be corrected outside.

“Tinubu thinks he is wiser than everyone but the breeze has blown and exposed the behind of the hen. In Yorubaland, a single person cannot be all-in-all. Tinubu thinks he can grab everything with his teeth but they have removed all his teeth.”

Reacting to reports circulating that some of Tinubu’s loyalists are urging him to pull out of the APC, Chief Bode said;

“That is his decision. I can’t decide for him. He just issued a statement saying he has not told anyone that he wants to become President in 2023 and his focus now is how to alleviate the sufferings of the people. But you can see what he is doing in Lagos. What about Alpha Beta? Who is still collecting the money for Alpha Beta?

” Yet he said he wants to alleviate the sufferings of the people? Let him bring out all our money in Alpha Beta since year 2000 till date. The managing director of Alpha Beta who ran away said they owed him N40b.”

” That money alone would have taken care of millions of poor people in Lagos today. Enough of this brigandage and classic example of greed.”

“I have always said Tinubu will vomit everything he has stolen and the day of reckoning is here. Only Almighty God can reign yesterday, today and forever. No one else can attain that height.”

Bola Tinubu & Buhari

” For me, when you start seeing the signal, if he is a very clever person, he will recall himself and have a deep introspection. If he thinks he can run Nigeria the way he did to Lagos, he is making a mistake.”

“The local government secretariat of Ikoyi/ Obalende was formerly on Glover Road in Ikoyi but he converted the place to his own and moved the local government to Obalende beside the cemetery. He made the daughter the Iyaloja of Lagos. “

“How can Iyaloja of Lagos be from Iragbiji?.  Bode asked.
“She, on her part went and locked up Computer Village, insisting that she must be paid certain amount of money. The son is the one getting all public advertisement contracts for Lagos at the moment.”

“You need to see the son’s convoy, you will think it’s the President that is moving. For how long will this continue? We came into this world naked and we will leave naked. Nobody will leave with anything no matter how much wealth you have amassed for yourself while in existence.”

And APC survives..

Buhari at the APC NEC meeting that resolved a lot of issues

When a couple of days ago I wrote that APC, unlike PDP, will soon resolve her issues, some didn’t believe.

It will implode, it will soon disintegrate so said the so-called analysts.

They never wished our party well. This is not to say there are no genuine critics of our party.
I argued then that even if our problems are as high as Mount Everest we have wise leaders in President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and our National Leader Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as many of our governors too who are reasonable and patriotic. They are not all self centred. They are men ( hope we have women soon ) who subscribed to the ideas and ideals of our party and not only what they can get .

As you have all seen, all of that brouhaha of last week has subsided if not vanished. My friend and brother Giadom came like a comet and vanished. My Comrade brother Oshiomole won one and lost one and we are matching forward to the future.

Don’t get me wrong . I am not saying things are perfect now. But think about it: no organization, just as no human being, is perfect. Wherever two or three people are gathered in pursuit of interests there must be conflict. It is the ability by the custodian of the larger interest to resolve the conflicts that makes for the resilience of such a group.

Make no mistake about it, there will still be conflicts in the future. It is the way we are able to resolve it that makes the difference between us and PDP.

When as soon as the emergency NEC was over three days ago I called and talked to the dramatis personae including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and they all expressed their gladness with the way it went. I knew we have disappointed our party’s enemies.

We are still a very young party.

ANC is more than a hundred years old and yet members and blocks within the party disagree. In the Republican Party today there are disagreements between President Donald Trump and some whose families are synonymous with the Party.

APC was formed in 2014. As we go along we will continue to perfect our acts and internal mechanisms.

We shall work assiduously to keep this party together and grow it because for many of us we cannot go to another party . It is either the progressive movement or retirement from public affairs .

As I said today on a radio programme if I die and someone brings PDP flag close to my coffin, I will wake up , tear it, burn it and go back to sleep.

We therefore thank all our leaders as well as the entire members of our party for their love for the progressive cause. Let us stay resolute to our commitment to bring about meaningful change to Nigeria. Let us serve our people more. Let the people put in charge of our public till imbibe the character and integrity of our dear President . Let us think more of our people than our selves.

Let us rededicate our lives to the service of our Nation.
Just as the task of rescuing our country is a work in progress so is the building of a virile and unassailable APC .

Now we know we will go to election in Edo and Ondo without any legal encumbrances. The party too and the gentleman governor from Yobe State handling her affairs for the next six months has promised to look into the grievances of members across the country. We also have the Chief Bisi Akande Panel.

We shall all listen and cooperate with them as we pray for the committee to organize a successful convention in no distant future.

APC survives! Thank you President Buhari. Thank you all our leaders. God bless our teeming members and supporters. Let us continue to keep the faith.

Hushpuppi’s arrest: Mompha deletes all Instagram posts

Mompha sitting in a private jet in a post on the now deleted Instagram page

Social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, better known as Mompha docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC fraud and money laundering has deleted all contents on his Instagram page.

This is the second time Mompha also known as ‘sky man’ and ‘citizen of the sky’, who had used Instagram to display an ostentatious lifestyle will be going blank on the platform.

The CEO of the unregistered Mompha Bureau de Change first deleted his posts after returning from EFCC’s custody on December 10, 2019.

However, Mompha wiped off all his posts on the platform again, leaving a motivational post. His 973,000 followers were shocked to find all his posts gone on Monday.

“I usually give people more chances than they deserve but once I’m done, I’m done,” the message read.

The move comes days after he reacted to the arrest of another social media celebrity, Raymond Igbalode, popularly known as Hushpuppi, by Dubai police.

Hushpuppi and 12 others were arrested for allegedly defrauding 1.9 million persons to the tune of N168 billion.

At the time of Hushpuppi’s arrest, Mompha, who appeared not to be in good terms with him as a result of an altercation between them on social media, advised his followers on Instagram not to celebrate someone else’s trying times.

“Never mock anyone who is facing a trial case cos you don’t know tomorrow. For those who are worried about me am safe and sound. No shaking, God never disappoint his own,” he wrote on June 10.

Not long afterwards, in an expletive post, Mompha went after people drawing the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the International Police (Interpol) to him.

He wrote: “JUMMA’AT Mubarak ??!!! Note: For those id**ts tagging fbi and interpol on my page and saying you are next na thunder go fire those hand you use in typing by the special Grace you id**t think fbi or interpol dont know mompha you must be really sick f**king hypocrites they never mind their business B**tards!!”

Mompha is on trial in Nigeria for allegedly laundering N32.9 billion.

Schengenvisainfo.com reports that citizens from Nigeria, Brazil, Qatar, the US and Russia would not be allowed to travel into Europe until the epidemiological situation in their countries with regards to COVID-19 improves.

Freedom of worship is no longer a constitutional right but now determined by some people’ – Bishop Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepo has again lashed out at the governments of Lagos and Ogun state over the continous closure of churches.

The founder of the Living Faith Church International aka Winners’ Chapel in his sermon on Sunday June 28, alleged that Lagos and Ogun have been inflicted with anti-church virus rather than the Coronavirus pandemic.

Oyedepo wondered why marketplaces where people no longer observe social distancing or hygiene will remain open while churches have not been allowed to reopen.

He said;

“No handwashing, no nothing, everyone is in the market running over each other every day of the week and there is no outbreak from the market but there is now outbreak, perceived outbreak from the church. Prophets are God’s voices to the nations. Caution!

“Now, freedom of worship is no longer a constitutional right but now determined to buy some individuals. It is a hard thing to kick against the priest.

“This is no longer coronavirus in Lagos and Ogun. It is now anti-church virus clean and clear.”

Also READ: Nigeria, US, others not permitted to enter Europe from July 1

He also claimed that 10 members of his church testified to being healed from the disease in the last one week. Oyedepo insisted that there would have been more testimonies if churches have been allowed to reopen.

He added;

“Can anybody silence the church? Never! I have never heard of anybody that God healed in the market but people get healed in every church day and night, real tangible healing. We have recorded 114 coronavirus healing testimonies. We got 10 this week.

“And that is the place that is vulnerable, not the market.”

Buhari should have been compelled to resign based on inefficiency — Afenifere chieftain, Adebanjo

Elder statesman and a leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political organisation, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, speaks with OLALEYE ALUKO on the spate of insecurity, restructuring of the country and other issues

How would you react to the rumblings in the APC? Do you agree with the sacking of the members of the party’s National Working Committee?

A house founded on sand will crumble. The APC is a conglomeration of incompatibles. There is no principle binding them together. It is a question of sharing of offices and power – no abiding ideology. It is the question of ‘who is the master in the sharing of money? The law is there but they choose (the parts of) the law that they are going to obey. So, what is happening to them will happen as long as they are not a democratic organisation. They don’t obey the rule of law and they do politics of convenience. So, I have been following it but I am not surprised. All those who will be talking now will not say the truth because they don’t know where the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), stands. Where the President stands is where they want to stand, not on the side of the truth. So, it is an organsiation, that I have no doubt, is going to crumble eventually. I take pride in the fact that since the Action Group metamorphosed into the Unity Party of Nigeria and later into the Alliance for Democracy; those who have been in that group have never changed.

What is the implication of this for the political future of a former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu?

I am worried for him. He knew all these things before but he was relying on Buhari, and working to make him the President. And I said it before, publicly, that Buhari is deceiving Asiwaju and Asiwaju is deceiving Buhari. Everybody is trying to use the other. Why can’t Tinubu hammer on restructuring knowing that this was what brought Buhari to office? The solution here is that, let Buhari get out of office, dissolve this government now and restructure the country. Until we have a truly federal constitution, we will not get anywhere. As far as I am concerned, nothing in this country will impress me until Buhari institutes a system of restructuring now. Everybody knows that we are being ruled by an imposed constitution and this is what is causing this trouble.

Also READ: Trump deletes video with ‘white power’ slogan after backlash

You were among those who warned former governor Tinubu not to drag the zone to the APC in 2015. What did you see then?

I knew this because I have been in this game for 70 years. So, many of those who are talking now were not born then. That is the truth – even Buhari was a toddler; he is now 74. So, each time I tell you, why should Tinubu, the Vice-President (Yemi Osinbajo)  and all those who were in AD run to the APC? Why are they hesitating now to stand for restructuring? They can’t talk. All the things I am telling you now – it is not the first time. I said both Jagaban (Tinubu) and Osinbajo should get out of the APC. I said it openly. It is a disgrace and disservice to Yorubaland. So what is happening now shows there is nothing to bind them together.

The resurgence of banditry, kidnapping and killings across the country has become a source of concern. What do you believe has gone wrong with the country’s leadership and security architecture?

We have all been living in denial. How can anybody tell you that what is happening now is a surprise? We ought to have passed this stage even before Buhari  was re-elected. Talking about this upsurge in killings in the South and in the North, can you recall the southern Kaduna killings in 2015? I made a statement at that time that this man (Buhari) is incompetent.

The authorities denied that the herdsmen were from any tribe and they bamboozled even the media. But when the Governor of Benue State (Samuel Ortom) went to seek an audience with the President at that time, he was told to go and make peace with his neighbours and let the people and herdsmen live peacefully together.

To show the negligence of this President, he said at a time that he had given the Inspector General of Police an instruction to go to Benue State since January and the IG did not carry out the assignment as of March. The President was able to tell us that he did not know that the IG did not go and the same police boss was still in office. That also went away.

Thereafter, not long ago, the Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, reached out to bandits and said he had reached an agreement with them. That was another drama. You know how many times Nigerians have clamoured that this set of service chiefs should be sacked and that they are not competent? The President turned a blind eye. Now, the President, in his latest meeting, said to them that they must prove themselves. This is not the time to tell the service chiefs to prove themselves. They have proved to be incompetent and inefficient since you have been in office. They are already within retirement. So, what do you say?  It is only in this country that Buhari would still be in office till now; it is only in this country. He should have been compelled to resign. Law and order have broken down. Where in this country can anyone boast that he can sleep with his two eyes closed?

Prof. Ango Abdullahi, I and others have spoken out before. They said we were talking politics. But you remember that when the Fulani herdsmen killings were at the peak, the President said the herdsmen came in from other countries. Are you saying people came from outside, they are now invading your people and you cannot tackle them? This shows the level of impunity and incompetence that we are facing.  So, what are you talking about? And right now, every day, they tell us they have finished the Boko Haram terrorists and that they are winning the battle. Yet every day, they kill our officers and soldiers. So, who are they talking to? I am tired of this situation.

With the establishment of Operation Amotekun in the South-West states, what empowerment do you think they need to enable them to tackle insecurity, especially in the South-West region?

Ideologically, the question of Amotekun is begging the issue. I have been saying it is rather the question of state police and local government policing, which are the ingredients of restructuring. This is because when we are talking about restructuring, a lot of things are embedded. It is like patching the question when we continue to say Amotekun, Amotekun. Is it just Amotekun that you (the Federal Government) can give us?  At the time they killed the daughter of our leader (Pa Reuben Fasoranti), I challenged Buhari by saying, ‘Don’t ask the governors to go and do something, give them the power and the control of their regions and see what will happen.’ He didn’t do that. That was when the government now started the discussion of community policing and local policing.  How can the governors serve as the chief security officers of their states and they have no control of even the police? There is no federal system anywhere the governor or the mayor or somebody has no control over his security apparatus.

And I added that, again, if you are not giving state police at the moment, then all the federal policemen in a state must be the indigenes of that state. He (Buhari) pretended that he did not hear. And I said at that time, ‘How can you say you can take care of my house better than I can do?’

Did you give the governors authority over their police? The policemen in their states are not bound by state authorities. How can you ask a Fulani man to go and police an Ijebu community in Ogun? What does he know about the terrain of the communities? The police say they don’t get intelligence reports; how can you get intelligence reports when you don’t understand the language of the locality? When we met at the 2014 Sovereign National Conference, I challenged the IG at that time (Mohammed Abubakar). I asked him a question; I said since we are practising a federal system like the United States of America, have you heard anything like the Inspector General of Police in the USA? No! No! They don’t have such.

Naturally and geographically, Nigeria is not sincere with itself. It is only in Nigeria that the nearer the desert, the more the population increases. The geography you and I learnt says that the vegetation area have the most population. It happens in New Zealand, India, Japan and China, but in Nigeria, they tell us otherwise. What a fraud. That is why they will not do restructuring.

Some Nigerians have said Operation Amotekun and other regional outfits could be a precursor to the state police people have been clamouring for. Do you believe that?

Again, that is still begging the question. The regional outfit is only assisting us. There is no doubt that Amotekun will improve the situation. But it is still begging the question – it is an attempt to water down the operation and benefits of state police. Why is the President afraid to give the governors the power which they are entitled to under a federal constitution? My view is that Buhari is intentionally frustrating the country by not doing the right thing. He has failed to secure lives and property of Nigerians. Our economy also is bad. What was the value of the naira to the dollar when Buhari came into office and what is it now?

The Buhari government criticised (former President Goodluck) Jonathan for wasteful spending. Now, Buhari has been going to the National Assembly to secure more money and take loans to fight Boko Haram and undertake the economy. And what has been the result? What I expect now is that Buhari should resign. That is what I am saying.

As it recently played out in Ondo State, some public affairs analysts have argued that state police may become an oppressive tool in the hands of governors to silence the opposition and deal with perceived enemies.  What would you say about that?

Yes, that question is apt. But is the Federal Government not using the police to oppress states that are not their own? They are just talking nonsense. That is not an excuse. If any state governor does that, the judiciary will deal with them. The state House of Assembly will deal with them. But how can you claim that you can take care of my house better than me? And how can you question a son how he spends the money of his parents? Is that your business? All the elections that the Federal Government has conducted and won in those states; was it not federal power that was used?

Northern elites have lamented the rising insecurity, especially banditry, in their region and there have been widespread protests. Do you think that state governors in the North are playing adequate roles in curbing the security problems?

What role can they play? What roles have been accorded to them by the constitution? You can only accuse them if they are in control of their police or security. That is what I am saying. When I am talking about the state police, I am not referring to the South alone. Even in the case of the Boko Haram terrorists, it is only when you involve the locals that you can win the war. The Commissioner of Police gets instruction from Abuja before he carries out a major action. Until we get down to the rudiments in this country, we cannot solve our problem. For the greater part of my life, I have worked for the unity of this country. In 1979, I campaigned a whole year for the Unity Party of Nigeria in Borno State. If I wanted a separation, I would not be there in the North. I was a lawyer and we worked for a progressive government. But now, we have narrow-minded people in power, who are also putting inefficient people in positions. That is what we are talking about. You don’t keep anyone who is due for retirement in service; you may consider them if there is good performance. But how do you keep in office those who are due for retirement and who also have not been efficient?  Nigerians are shouting, “Send them away”. Yet, Buhari is telling them, “You will see my red eye.”  What are they (military chiefs) going to do? Is it when they (criminals) finish all of us?

You have said Nigeria’s current political structure is not balanced and that the country needs to return to true federalism. What specific  steps should the Federal Government take in that direction now?

That is not a new thing. It is an obvious step. Our present system is a product of the present constitution. So, we cannot use the provisions of an awkward constitution to rectify the system. And the recommendations of the 2014 Sovereign National Conference are there that Jonathan handed over to this government. If Buhari does not believe in that, let him set up his own and let us move forward.  What is it that you don’t agree with, then take it out; what is it that you believe in, then put it in, and let us move forward. But when they want to deceive us, they say, ‘Well, there will be devolution of powers and we can restructure by looking at state police.’ They are just deceiving themselves. I have said it before that with all these things that are happening, Buhari has shown that we cannot rely on his words. We in Afenifere supported Buhari in 2007 when he said he would undertake restructuring. I have asked Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu (Buhari’s spokesmen) to renounce that statement and they have kept quiet. Restructuring was also the first campaign promise of this government in 2014; till now, they have not done it. They set up a committee headed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir  el-Rufai, but till now, they have not embarked on restructuring. What are they taking us for?

Despite the perceived non-performance of Buhari in his first term, a good number of Yoruba leaders still supported his re-election. Is it that the Yoruba cannot speak with one voice?

What do you call a democracy? Even when Chief Obafemi Awolowo was ruling the Western Region, did he have a 100 per cent support? No. He only had the majority support and that is democracy. And those who are opposing should remain to keep the government on its toes. That is what democracy is about. Look at Britain and how Brexit happened when the country said it was exiting the European Union. It was controversial but the majority supported it.

Our own amalgamation has been for over 100 years and those who handed over independence to us gave us a federal constitution in 1956. I have repeatedly said that it was the military that changed the constitution in 1966. We must continue to repeat that the problem we are having now is the problem of the military.  In 1999, when the military wanted to go back to the barracks, we told them, “If you (the military) are going back to the barracks, send us back to the constitution you met.” This is because the constitution we have now is not our constitution. And I repeat, restructuring is the constitution that Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo and Nnamdi Azikiwe got before independence.

And I put the question: Is Buhari more intelligent and Fulani than Sardauna or Balewa? They have not answered that question. So, let us go back to the Independence constitution as agreed on by the political leaders. But the government is saying that it is not so.

I am not happy. I am conscious of the fact that my life is short and I am only living by the grace of God. All that I am saying now is not for me. If you change the constitution of our country now, I am not going to be the President. It is the younger ones that should do something; if they refuse to fight for this country, they will suffer for it.

People cannot feel touched as I am. You know why? It is only very few of us that are remaining now who fought for independence. I fought for it as a student. I know what we fought for. I know what I am talking about. I know what we were able to achieve under the regional governments.

Now Jagaban is thinking they (Buhari and his team) will hand over the government to him; he is just deceiving himself. I don’t support anyone to be President of Nigeria under this present constitution; it is an unjust constitution. We must have a just constitution agreeable by all the federating states and stakeholders and then we can move on. And we have done the greater part of it, which was the 2014 Sovereign National Conference. And I challenge Buhari that we cannot assemble a better crop of Nigerians than the 2014 composition. The personalities, the quality, the diversity and religious groups were there and they were professionals. You cannot assemble a better composition than that. But this is a military government in the hands of civilians.

This is the second year Nigeria is celebrating June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day; as one of the leaders of the National Democratic Coalition, do you agree that the government has done enough about June 12?

I have said it before; Democracy Day was changed – are we democratic? The essence of the June 12 struggle is to create an egalitarian society and wipe out poverty. Are we wiping out poverty? The man who said he was going to wipe out corruption and was complaining about his party that he had to go and borrow money for his nomination form; what has he done since he came to office? How can one expect a young man to come and contest a political position when you don’t have money? When we were supporting Buhari in 2007, we thought he was the cleanest among the candidates. We went to Adamasingba (Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State) and we campaigned for him. That is why I look at Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu when they are defending what should not be defended. I don’t have anything personal against Buhari.

Nigerians have been talking about the zoning arrangement and some people believe that it is proper for the South to produce the President by 2023. Do you agree with that rotational arrangement?

They are all pretending. If they really want to keep this country together, it is obvious that the North, South-West and the Ijaw people (South-South) have had it; why are you denying the Igbo from power if you really believe that we are one?

Mind you, my own position is that I don’t believe in any election until we have restructured this country. So, anything I am telling you about where power should go is after we have restructured this country. This is because under this constitution, if you conduct any election, Buhari will rig it. Anybody can spend money and rig the election in this country. They will say you can go to court. You will go to court and come back to square one. Therefore, let us break the constitution. If anybody wants to be corrupt and rig election, let it be in their own region. On education, agriculture, health and other sectors, let us have a real constitution where the states can be allowed to develop their regions. If you want Sharia, bring it on in your own area. Let us go back to the basics. Why should we say we want to go back to the constitution our forefathers gave us and that should be a problem if we are really sincere? That is the truth. This is the way to go. I don’t have anything to benefit. It is for my grandchildren. But we must all work for the unity and progress of this country. We need people to take action because this country belongs to all of us.

Trump deletes video with ‘white power’ slogan after backlash

Trump

United States President Donald Trump tweeted and then deleted a video in which his supporters could be heard repeating a “white power” slogan, in the latest instance in which the president was accused of inflaming racial tensions.

The phrase is often used by far-right white nationalists and prompted a backlash from within the president’s own Republican Party.

The tweet came as the country is going through an intense national conversation about race and discrimination, in the wake of police violence and the death of George Floyd.

There have been protests around the country for weeks under the Black Lives Matter banner.

The video shows Trump supporters shouting the slogans.

Trump attached a comment saying: “Thank you to the great people of The Villages,” referring to a retirement community in Florida where the scene was filmed.

Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican member of the Senate, was quick to denounce the president.

“He should not have retweeted it and he should just take it down.

“The entire thing was offensive,” Scott said on CNN.

The White House later explained the deletion of the tweet, which had been up for nearly four hours, saying the president was unaware of the audio content.

“President Trump is a big fan of The Villages. He did not hear the one statement made on the video.

”What he did see was tremendous enthusiasm from his many supporters,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a brief statement.

The president has been accused of worsening racial tensions in the country over the course of his time in the White House, while failing to promote a reconciliation programme.

In recent weeks he pushed for a tough crackdown against the sometimes violent protests against injustice and police brutality.

Boeing 737 MAX to conduct test flight this week

US regulators are getting close to undertaking a test flight of Boeing’s grounded 737 MAX and could schedule the key step for as soon as this week, two sources said Friday.

The long-delayed test flight by the Federal Aviation Administration is a critical step in recertifying the plane for service but the exact timing remains fluid, two people familiar with the matter told AFP.

The plane has been grounded globally since March 2019 following two deadly crashes.

Boeing has upgraded software for a flight handling system that was quickly identified as a major factor in crashes of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines planes that together claimed 346 lives.

But the recertification of the jet has been delayed by subsequent issues identified up by air safety regulators.

“The team is making progress toward FAA certification flights in the near future,” an FAA spokesman said Friday.

“The FAA is reviewing Boeing’s documentation to determine whether the company has met the criteria to move to the next stage of evaluation. We will conduct the certification flights only after we are satisfied with that data.”

Demand for the plane has plummeted as global air travel collapsed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boeing has said it expects certification in time to resume deliveries of the MAX some time during the third quarter, while adding that the timing will be set by the FAA.

I regret not joining PDP before now – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said he regretted not joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) long before he did.

Ruing his about 13- year sojourn in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governor said he had come to realis the PDP stood for the values he so much cherished and lived for.

Obaseki spoke on Saturday at the Abuja secretariat of the PDP being presented with certificate of return as the party’s flag bearer for the September 19 Edo governorship election.

The governor, who spoke for himself and his deputy, Philip Shuiabu, said unlike the APC that pushed them out in the rain and storm at their hours of tribulation, the PDP cared so much for its members.

Obaseki said: “It was only when we entered the house (PDP) that we realised that this was the house we should have been in the first instance.

“Because we now saw that the values in the house are the values we cherish and the values we lived for; values of justice, values of law and order, values of care for our people, putting the people first.

“These are the values we have always been in pursuit of, which we found in this new house in which we have been graciously accommodated.

“My deputy and I are very grateful to this great party. Like I said, you will never know what God has destined for you. In our hours of tribulation, when we were pushed out in the rains and storm from our political party, you came out with that huge umbrella to give us cover and shelter”.

“I must thank members of the National Working Committee for the quality of governance, the quality of response that I have witnessed. That has enabled us achieve much in less than one week because of the responsiveness of the National Organising Secretary.

“They followed up on every issue and every document. When issues came up, the National Legal Adviser was there to respond to all our inquiries. The National Publicity Secretary checked on us every day”.

The Governor told the PDP leaders the people of Edo state had assured him that they would always follow him to whichever political he chose to belong.

According to him, his decision to join the PDP was a product of wide consultations with Edo people and assured the party leaders of massive votes and victory for the PDP in the September election.

Thanking the party leaders for allowing him to run with his deputy, Obaseki pledged to uphold the ideals of the PDP at all times and to submit to the directives of the leadership.

“I want to commit to you that we shall promote the ideals of this great party and you can always count on us. Whenever the National Working Committee calls on us, we will be there.

“We have no choice because from what I have seen from my brother governors in this party, what they have done and what they did for us in the party, revived my political career, I have never seen that level of commitment”, he said.

While presenting the governor with the certificate of return, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, assured Obaseki of inclusiveness, equity, justice and fairness at all times.

According to him Obaseki’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer followed due process, stressing that the PDP had learnt enough lessons from its past mistakes to not embrace impunity.

“We have learnt from our mistakes and we have reformed so we have come with open arms to embrace everybody. We are not a sectional party, we will not be there and some parts of the country will be crying. Nigeria belongs to all us.

“Today, we have taken an important step to ensure that Edo people believe in us. They believe in us and they will vote for PDP. So from Edo, we will move to Ondo and gradually to all parts of the country.

“Everybody believed that for the governor to join the PDP was a miracle and we are going to have a miracle governor who will win elections for us because you can see clearly the hand of God on this governor and his deputy”, Secondus said.

Addressing Governor Obaseki, the PDP chairman said, “Your Excellency, in PDP we are guided by the rule of law, we are guided by our rules and we are guided by the people’s interest.

“We are driven by the fact that we must provide the best governance for our people. Since you came in, you can see that we are guided by process.

“In PDP, the institution here has a system that is transparent, free and fair for all to see and you have witnessed it since the last few weeks. God has been our guide here, we are a people, a party that fear God and we put the interest of our people first not our personal interests”.

While submitting his report, the chairman of the electoral panel that conducted the Edo primaries, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state, said from what he witnessed in Edo, the state will be won by the PDP.

He said: “Edo is ready for capture. To be won by this very important party, the PDP. I am very sure and confidently that Edo is going to fall in line within the realm of good governance of the PDP”.

EFCC to go after Nigerian looters hiding in Ghana — Magu

Mr Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says many Nigerian looters are hiding in neighbouring Ghana. Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Magu said the commission was putting resources together to go after them and recover the country’s wealth stashed in that country.

The EFCC boss spoke when a delegation of the Chartered Institute of Public Resources Management and Politics (CIPRMP) visited the commission’s headquarters.

According to him, the EFCC is partnering with its counterpart in Ghana on the impending asset recovery operation. “Corruption is a borderless crime. We are putting our resources together to allow us go to Ghana without restrictions and recovery our stolen property back home.

“I am appealing to Nigerians to trust the Commission with relevant information about corrupt practices in the country.

“ There are a lot of looters hiding in Ghana. We are already talking, we will bring them back. We will go bring the assets back to the country,” he said.

Magu also urged Nigerians to disregard the “falsehood” in some selected news outlets about him and the commission, saying EFCC activities were transparent.

“We follow the international best practice when it comes to areas of investigations, tracing of looted assets, recovering looted assets. We all have our records.

“We are aware that we have ruffled many feathers. We have touched the untouchables and we have dared lions in their dens.

“We are doing all these, not because we love dangers and death, we are doing them because we value the comfort and development which anti-corruption brings.

EFCC Boss – Mr. Magu

“We value good lives for our fellow men and women and we value better future for all our children. The costs of fighting corruption may be grave, but the costs of not fighting it is more deadly.

“This is why we continue to call on every Nigerian to enlist in the anti-graft war. A good war is a war that is waged by the majority for the good of the majority, ” he said.

Recall that the EFCC boss made the remarks after he was decorated as fellow of the institute by the delegation. Magu expressed gratitude for the award and promised to strive at all times to uphold the tenets of the Institute . Earlier the Executive Director, West African Region of CIPRMP, Mr Richard’s Kpoku-Aquarte, urged Magu to see the recognition as a motivation to continue with the good services to his country.

He added that Magu’s “selfless services and proven professionalism” over the years had been particularly recognised by the Institute, hence the award. “As you receive the symbols of your investiture today, you shall make a solemn pledge to continue to remain faithful, loyal and honest to the country. “And always to uphold the green and white flag of an ambassador of this great nation, ” he said.

Kpoku-Aquarte commended President Muhammadu Buhari, who he said came on a rescue mission in 2015 to take Nigeria out of the woods by giving the anti-graft war a boost to tackle the evil menace of corruption in the country.

Viral Nigerian triplet siblings reveal why they got married to each other at the same time

Earlier this month, we brought you photos from the wedding of a set of triplet grooms who got married to triplets brides in Enugu on same day.

Ngwo community in Enugu State played host to a memorable wedding over the weekend and it has made headlines due to the uniqueness of ceremony.

The triplet brothers, with names, Chinedu, Chukwuebuka and Kenechukwu got married to triplet sisters, Dumalu, Okwuoma and Chinwe.

In a recent interview with The Punch, the newly weds talked about their wedding and unique love story.

When asked why the decision, Chinedu said,

“It was our wish, while we were growing up, to have it like that. It was also our mum’s wish for us to marry at the same time. She always imagined the three of us getting married on the same day. She felt it would look very nice and prayed for it to happen because it was not going to be easy for all of us to be ready at the same time.

She died in 2013 so unfortunately, she wasn’t there to witness it. If she were alive, she would have been excited. I know she would have gone down on her knees to thank God for answering her prayer and making her wish come true.

We are not based in one state so we have different stories of how we told our wives. The discussions were done separately.”

On whether their wives objected to the idea of marrying on the same day, Chinedu said,

“When we mentioned it to them, they were excited and had not seen it happen before. So, they were eager to witness it. We are grateful to them because they sacrificed their idea of the kind of wedding they wanted for it.”

Coronavirus: 144 years old man recovers in Ethiopia

People over the age of 80 are considered to be among the most vulnerable if they catch the virus. An aged man of over a 100 years old has been reported to have recovered from Coronavirus in Ethiopia Aba Tilahun Woldemichael’s family says he is 114, which would make him the world’s oldest man, but there is no birth certificate to confirm his age. People over the age of 80 are considered to be among the most vulnerable if they catch the virus.

The centenarian, who is an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian monk, is now being looked after at home by his grandson. “When I was in the hospital I was praying to God asking for my health. I was crying and praying for the whole country to be healthy again,” he told the BBC. Aba Tilahun tested positive for the virus when a random screening process took place in his neighbourhood in the capital, Addis Ababa, and was admitted to hospital before the symptoms showed, Dr. Hiluf Abate told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

This allowed the medical team to be pro-active with its treatment and closely monitor the old man, he added. Within four days of his admission to the severe coronavirus ward in Yeka Kotebe hospital, Aba Tilahun’s condition deteriorated as the virus took hold and he was put on oxygen, Dr. Hiluf said. In all, he spent 14 days at the hospital and was treated with oxygen for more than a week.

He also was given anti-biotics and the anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone, which has been hailed as a ground-breaking treatment for hospital patients seriously ill with Covid-19. Ethiopia, which has strict coronavirus restrictions, has recorded more than 5,000 confirmed cases and 81 deaths. Although the hospital cannot confirm that its patient is 114 years old, the medical team says that he is definitely older than 100 and estimates that he is 109.

In his youth, he moved to Addis Ababa from southern Ethiopia when he was young and has lived through tumultuous times in his country. He witnessed the Italian occupation between 1935 and 1941, the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974, the collapse of the Marxist Derg regime in 1991, and now he has survived Covid-19. For years he has lived a simple life as a monk; “Aba” is a title meaning “Father”. But when he was younger he worked as an electrician, house painter, and general handyman, his 24-year-old grandson Binyam Lulseged Tilahun told the BBC.

Electronic banking fraud in Nigeria: how it’s done, and what can be done to stop it

Six years ago, a cashless policy became fully operational in Nigeria. The aim was to encourage electronic transactions with a view to reducing the amount of physical cash in the economy. The logic was that this would minimise the risk of cash-related crimes.

But a major downside of the policy has been pervasive electronic banking fraud (e-fraud). Although the cashless banking system was designed to foster transparency, curb corruption and drive financial inclusion, it’s threatened by the growing perpetration of fraud.

About N15.5 billion was lost to bank fraud in 2018. About 60% of the fraud was perpetrated online owing to available internet-based and tech-rated banking services.

Our research investigated dimensions of electronic fraud in Nigeria. We found three: internal fraud carried out by banking staff; external fraud carried out by ordinary Nigerians; and collaboration between fraudsters and banking staff.

We found that inefficient supervision, non-performance of oversight by regional heads of banks, and poor follow-up on customers’ addresses (Know Your Customer) accounted for the fraud that took place.

Our study provides the banking industry, banking public and investors with critical pointers on how to reduce fraud.

Different types

Our study involved collecting data as well as conducting interviews with 30 people. These included victims of bank fraud, bank customers who did not subscribe to the cashless policy and fraud detectives at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

These were the common patterns we uncovered.

Insider fraud: By insider, we mean those working with banks or those in a relationship with account holders. Here, the fraud was exclusively executed by members of staff in the banking system who exploited the strategic position they held in the system and their grasp of how it works. Banking institutions and customers were their victims.

Source: Lifewire / Theresa Chiechi

An example we came across during our research was the case of a N90 million (US$452,261) fraud perpetrated by an account officer of a major eatery in Lagos State. The job of this account officer was to collect the eatery’s takings and deposit them at the bank. A fraud detective told us that:

As the account officer he would collect money on a daily basis and was expected to credit the company’s account. However, he would collect money on Monday and lodge it and collect on Tuesday and not lodge it. He was missing one day out. He did this continuously until he was able to rake in N90 million. At this time, when the eatery management raised the alarm on their account, he ran away and could not be found. We however used his sister to arrest him. We were only able to recover N8 million naira from him. He had used part of the money to organise his wedding, had a baby and almost completed a four-bedroom bungalow at another area in Lagos.

Bank fraud is often successful because many Nigerians don’t subscribe to transaction alerts. The eatery management trusted their account officer but did not know that he was dishonest.

Outsider fraud: These perpetrators were external to the banking system. They thrived on their internet skills and sometimes on their understanding of the victims’ routine and identity.

An example we came across was the fraudulent use of bank verification numbers (BVN). These were made compulsory by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2014. All bank account holders had to undertake biometric registration. The intention was to ensure security and check fraud.

But fraudsters have found a way to cheat the system by sending bank customers false emails asking for their bank verification details. As one victim explained to us:

I needed to make some transactions and I headed for my bank. I had called my account officer ahead of time. On getting to the bank, I connected my computer and got a mail from a supposed same bank. I was asked to click on a link and supply my BVN details for update of my account or face service suspension on the account. I just clicked the link and supplied my details and behold, N1 million debit alert came on my phone within five minutes! I was shocked and devastated but before we could do anything they had withdrawn everything.

Collaborative fraud: This involved collaboration between bank staff and fraudsters outside the banking system. Banks and individual account holders were the victims. For example, bank staff could provide account details of customers to the collaborating fraudster.

Governance gaps

Despite this weak governance architecture, which is still not fraud proof, bank executives reported having in place mechanisms which had limited the incidence of fraud. One was sending out information to customers who subscribed to electronic alerts. Through this, banks contact and send anti-fraud messages to their customers.

Owing to reputational risk, banks try to refrain from public prosecution of erring staff. We found that banks adopted shaming as a mechanism for instilling discipline within their organisations while attempting to ease out “bad eggs” through flagging of their images on computers and across the banking industry.

There is a need to check fraud through customer awareness and financial literacy education.

While fraudsters continue to design new ways of working on customers’ vulnerabilities, Nigerian banks need to use the Cybercrime Act to prosecute offenders as a way to boost confidence in the banking sector and deter fraud in the future.

IMF cuts Nigeria’s GDP forecast, says economy’ll shrink by 5.4%

The International Monetary Fund has downgraded Nigeria’s 2020 growth projection, saying the economy will shrink by 5.4 per cent.

The IMF had in April 2020 projected that the country’s economy would contract by 3.4 per cent this year.

The IMF disclosed this in its overview of the World Economic Outlook for June, titled, ‘A crisis like no other, an uncertain recovery’, which was released on Wednesday.

It stated that, ‘Global growth is projected at –4.9 per cent in 2020, 1.9 percentage points below the April 2020 World Economic Outlook forecast.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a more negative impact on activity in the first half of 2020 than anticipated, and the recovery is projected to be more gradual than previously forecast.”

Also Read: FG: We’ll announce new date for flight resumption next week

The report said for the first time, all regions were projected to experience negative growth in 2020.

It said there were, however, substantial differences across individual economies, reflecting the evolution of the pandemic and the effectiveness of containment strategies; variation in economic structure; reliance on external financial flows, including remittances; and pre-crisis growth trends.

Part of the report read, “In China, where the recovery from the sharp contraction in the first quarter is underway, growth is projected at 1.0 per cent in 2020, supported in part by policy stimulus.

“India’s economy is projected to contract by 4.5 per cent following a longer period of lockdown and slower recovery than anticipated in April.”

According to the report, in Latin America, where most countries are still struggling to contain infections, the two largest economies, Brazil and Mexico, are projected to contract by 9.1 and 10.5 per cent, respectively, in 2020.

“The disruptions due to the pandemic, as well as significantly lower disposable income for oil exporters after the dramatic fuel price decline, imply sharp recessions in Russia (–6.6 per cent), Saudi Arabia (–6.8 per cent), and Nigeria (–5.4 per cent), while South Africa’s performance (–8.0 per cent) will be severely affected by the health crisis,” it said.

The IMF, however, increased its projection for 2021 to 2.6 per cent from the initial projection of 0.2 per cent.

FG: We’ll announce new date for flight resumption next week

The federal government says it will announce a new date for reopening of airports and resumption of flights after the completion of dry run tests in Lagos and Abuja airports.

Musa Nuhu, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), disclosed this during the presidential taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

“Since the last announcement, last week Thursday briefing, that Sunday, June 21, is no longer feasible for the opening of the airport, I would like to report that we’ve had significant progress in the readiness of the industry to restart,” Nuhu said.

“The gaps have been closed, but however, we still have a few gaps within the aviation ecosystem, and this will be closed hopefully in the next couple of days.

Also Read: IMF cuts Nigeria’s GDP forecast, says economy’ll shrink by 5.4%

“I’ve said it and I’ll keep saying it we must get it right the first time, both on the issues of technical safety and health safety of all stakeholders.

“And one of these things we’re going to use to close some of the gaps is the dry run test of both Lagos and Abuja airports coming up this Saturday.

“After this dry runs, we’ll have a look, observe and see the gaps that might still be there and close them.

“After that, we will announce a day of restart shortly sometime next week.

“Aviation is already a very complex system on its own and by the time it threw in the COVID-19 pandemic, it already complicates a very complex system.

“We will not take any chances. We are almost there when we close all the few remaining gaps in the aviation ecosystem we will start.”

TheCable reported, on Thursday, flight resumption guidelines for passengers.

It advised that people coming to pick up passengers should remain in their car until the passenger exits the gates.

In Seyitan’s statement, she stresses that she was “violated and raped” by D’banj after he allegedly gained access into her hotel room on December 30, 2018.

She said the following day, June 17, she was made to sign a “gag order” by the police and D’banj’s team and she “could only post on social media what had been approved by D’banj’s team“.

She then revealed she was released and D’Banj’s team allegedly picked her up and took her to an undisclosed location where she was “isolated, coerced, pressured, and intimidated in person by D’banj and his team.

Seyitan claims they allegedly took hold of her social media accounts and forced her to say that her statement was a publicity stunt.

She said her mother, her lawyer, and her friends were unable to reach her until activists swung into action and tracked her using satellite mapping.

Seyitan added that “since June 18th, D’banj through his team has continued to harrass me.” She said they also make threats.

According to her, she never came out for financial gain — she said at the time she came out, she only asked for an apology through her lawyers. She insists that the apology is all she’s still asking for.

She said she’s still dealing with the “effects of the rape, the trauma of recounting that multiple times this week and the indignity of being held against my will for two (2) days.

“I’m still yet to come to terms with the fact that my fundamental human rights were stolen from me,” Seyitan said.

She also added that no one should be subjected to what she has been through, from “the violent abuse which happened to me in a hotel room that the door was locked to being intimidated for speaking up.” she said.

“Most importantly, nobody should have the right to use their name or status to intimidate survivors who speak out or to tamper with justice.”

She went on to thank those who stood by her and asked for time to heal.

Here’s her press statement below.

Abule-Ado Explosion: Actress Umeh reveales how her husband miraculously escaped

Nollywood Actress, Nkiru Umeh has taken to her social media page to share a testimony on her God saved her husband during the Abule-Ado Explosion.

The Actress was one of the resident that suffered a massive loss of her properties but thankfully, in her home no life was lost.

Her burnt apartment..

God loves me too much honestly. So on the 14th of March, my husband had a vigil that he closed early morning that black Sunday. He is actually a charismatic teaching minister. So he said we should go for 8am that he would stay home and catch some sleep then attend the last mass at 10am. I understood that as he was awake all through the night and sure needed to sleep. We continued dressing up. I thought he already slept. As we came out to drive out he came out all dressed up.

I was like, I thought you wanted to sleep, he said somehow he changed his mind and decided to attend 8am then come back and sleep well at once. Not knowing he won’t even go back to that house again not to talk of sleeping. That’s the miracle behind him not being in that house. He would have been in his room sleeping deep. My God! I don’t know what I did to deserve such miracle. Yes I lost every damn property no pin was saved both in the beauty complex and in the house. Everything burnt to ashes but you spared me that which I won’t be able to replace. LIFE. I am grateful lord. Happy Father’s Day my husband, my king, my chair leader my best support system. You are an amazing husband and father.

COVID-19: Plateau mulls fresh lockdown as citizens violate safety protocols

Following the increasing number of people infected with the COVID-19 disease in Plateau State and the continued flagrant disregard for safety protocols, the State government has threatened to return the State to the period of total lockdown to curb the rate of community infection in the State.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Dan Manjang who made government’s position known in a statement issued in Jos on Monday said Government has it on sound authority that some worship centres, markets, motor parks, commercial vehicles, tricycles (Keke Napep) are at the forefront of this flagrant violation.

The Government, therefore, warns that it will not hesitate to restore the lockdown earlier lifted by the Governor, Simon Lalong as it views with dismay the non-compliance with regards to the wearing of face masks, social distancing, hand washing and the use of sanitisers. Manjang stated, “The Plateau State Government views with grave concern the rise in the rate of infection of the coronavirus in the State following the ease of lockdown exercise.

“This essentially is due to the flagrant disregard to the laid down protocols as it affects this dreaded monster, by a sizeable population of the State.

“In view of the foregoing, therefore, government hereby states categorically that such an unbecoming attitude stimulates the government to contemplate severe measures to address and arrest the situation.

“This could include among many, a total lockdown of the State, for a longer period, and the indefinite sealing of such premises who refuse to adhere to the guidelines.”

He reminded the citizens that Government by this announcement, wants the public to “remember that there is an Executive Order duly signed by His Excellency, Governor Simon Lalong, to prosecute violators before the law,” adding that “government does not want to be pushed to taking any decision that will further hurt the people and hereby appeals to all law-abiding citizens of the State to obey the COVID-19 protocols as spelt out by the State in order to curtail the disease and save lives.”

Buhari’s incompetence attracts insults against Nigerians all over the world

Fani Kayode

Following the Demolishion of Nigeria’s High commission in Ghana, Former Minister of Aviation, Fani Kayode has blamed President Buhari for the act, says Buhari’s incompetence attracts insults and assaults against Nigerians all over the world.

In a statement he personally signed, He added that Nigerian traders in Ghana have had their shops forcefully shut for the last 8 months. Now Nigeria’s Embassy in Accra has been demolished and embassy staff threatened with violence.Says’ Ghana would not try this if Nigeria had a President or if OBJ or Abacha were in power.

READ BELOW:

“I have a lot of love and immense respect for the nation of Ghana and I have always regarded Accra as my second home. This is all the more so because I have so many friends, loved ones, relatives and family ties there.”

“However this behaviour is most uncharitable and totally un-Ghanaian. As a matter of fact it is barbaric, disgraceful and totally unacceptable. Nigeria must never be treated in this way by her closest and most trusted neighbour, ally and friend no matter what.”

“I condemn this brutal assault on our people and our Diplomatic Mission in Accra. The Ghanaian President, who I have known for over 50 years, is a profoundly good man and I believe that he would never condone or approve of this reckless behaviour and dangerous provocation.”

“I call on him to de-escalate the situation, to direct his Foreign Minister to apologise to Nigeria forthwith and to discipline and punish all those that were involved in this flagrant violation of diplomatic norms and Nigerian sovereignty. This must NOT be allowed to happen again.”

“I call on the Buhari administration to stand up and defend the honor and integrity of our people and nation and to protest this gratuitous insult and insolent affront which could easily be misconstrued as an act of war.”

“Buhari’s weaknesses and incompetence attracts nothing but disdain, insults and assaults against Nigerians all over the world.”

“Under his watch Nigerians have been sold into slavery in Libya, murdered in South Africa, expelled in Angola, humiliated in Kenya, demonised in America, undermined in the United Kingdom, assaulted in China and now our High Commission has been attacked and bulldozed in Ghana whilst its staff and our “citizens have been subjected to indignity and humiliation and literally traumatised and terrorised.”

“Worse still bloodthirsty, vicious and terrorist foreigners from Mali, Niger Republic and Chad are butchering our people all over the country and have literally placed the states of the North Western and North Central zones under siege whilst unleashing carnage and slaughter on our people on a daily basis.”

“The North Eastern zone has fared even worse and has been infiltrated by thousands of Arab and other foreign fighters who have joined the ranks of Boko Haram and who control and tax swathes and large portions of Nigerian territory whilst the south is under occupation.”

“Our President must take full responsibility for all these affronts and he must snap out of his nauseating and self-induced slumber. We may have many issues in our country but Nigerians are not filth and we are not anyone’s whipping boy or toilet paper. We are a strong noble and proud people who have a rich heritage and a proud history.”

“We know how to stand up for ourselves and defend our own and every humiliation that has been meted out to us will be paid back in full measure to those that have dared us once we get the weak and cowardly creature called Buhari out of power. He does not defend his nation or his flag because he sees his own people as being worthless.”

“He sees them as being nothing but vassals and slaves. How can we be taken seriously or respected by foreigners when our own President hates us with a perfect hatred and considers us to be worse than vermin?”

“It is a great irony that we are being led by a man who has nothing but disdain and contempt for his own people and who does not give a damn when foreigners treat them like slaves, setfs, savages and mongrels.”

“I do not blame the Ghanaians for this, I blame Buhari and his rudderless, uninspiring , shameless and incompetent Government.”

“Nigerian traders in Ghana have had their shops forcefully shut for the last 8 months. Now our Embassy in Accra has been demolished and embassy staff threatened with violence. I assure you that Ghana would not try this if Nigeria had a President or if OBJ or Abacha were in power.” He added.

Police parade three brothers arrested for running a fake foundation

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested three brothers identified as Emmanuel Ushie 23; Henry Ushie, 30 and a graduate of Statistics from Anambra State University and Matthew Ushie, 28, and an OND graduate from Federal Polytechnic Oko, for running a fake Frank Mba Foundation bank account with FCMB.

A statement released by the spokesperson of the Force, Frank Mba, said the trio used a fake Facebook account and then fraudulently operated bank accounts to defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard-earned monies under the pretext that the Foundation is raising money to help vulnerable Nigerians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Investigations by officers attached to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reveal that the brothers engage extensively and serially in such frauds and other related cybercrimes.

During the unrelenting manhunt of the fraudsters, Henry Ushie, an elder sibling to Emmanuel Ushie, was identified as the gang leader of the syndicate behind the scam. He went underground as his younger siblings also involved in the crime were arrested.

Following weeks of intense follow-up and meticulous investigations, Henry was arrested on Thursday, June 11 at a hideout in Ihiala, Anambra State. His arrest eventually led to the arrest of his younger brother Mathew Ushie ‘m’ who is also an active member of the syndicate.

Further investigation revealed that Mathew Ushie had been arrested in Ghana last year in a well-publicized bust of fraudsters where he and other international fraudsters used the name of the Inspector General of Police of Ghana, John Kudalor to defraud unsuspecting Ghanaian policemen in the guise of providing an opportunity for them to attend United Nations peacekeeping mission using a fake Facebook account. Information about his arrest and parading before the press in Ghana is available on the internet.

Similarly, Henry Ushie had also been arrested in 2017 by the IRT for impersonating then ACP ABBA Kyari, the Commander IRT on Facebook, and defrauding many innocent Nigerians before he was arrested and subsequently charged to court for impersonation. He eventually got bail from the court and went back to the same crime.

Mba said all the suspects will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.

The police spokesperson added that 21 other suspected fraudsters including a woman, have been arrested for their involvement and indictment in cases of romance and online dating scams, generating and deployment of fake bank alerts, hacking and fraudulent wire transfers, cyberstalking and impersonation of high-profile personalities in Nigeria and across the world.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include:

i.             11 Laptop Computers

ii.           37 Mobile Phones

iii.          11 SIM cards of different telecoms networks

iv.          5 International passports

v.            12 ATM Cards

How Bobrisky lied to his father about his changed identity

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Isolo-Ejigbo branch B, Alhaji Bashir Femi Olowu, has revealed how the Nigerian cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, lied to his father, Alhaji Musibau Okuneye, about his changed identity, saying he told his father that his feminine dressing was to act theatre on social media only.

According to him, his father was still in the dark about the real identity of his son as he (Bobrisky) dressed normal as a man to his father’s birthday held at his residence in Ejigbo last week.

He said the father was not happy about the identity of his son on social media as against the belief by many people that he was supporting him in the act.

Olowu, whose image with that of Bobrisky in a photograph taken at his father’s birthday has gone viral on social media, said he has also tried to convince Bobrisky to amend his way and desist from the act but seemed not to see anything wrong in what he is doing.

“He didn’t seem to be convinced but he continues to present false identity to his father and that was why he came to his father’s birthday dressed normal as a man.”

The branch NURTW chairman, who told DAILY POST that he attended the birthday party just to present his gift to the father whom he described as a good man, said Alhaji Musibau Okuneye is a responsible father who has been residing in Ejigbo for more than 25 years.

He said: “Alhaji Okuneye, the father of Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky) has been a good and responsible man in the community who has been living here in Ejigbo since 1995. He does not know what his son was doing out there because what the boy told him is that he dressed like a lady on social media because he was an artiste and that the dressing was only for theatre purpose.”

Bobrisky’s appearance at the party of his father’s birthday celebration caused a stir on social media as he was seen dressed like a real man without any makeup or fake identity.

For the first time in so many years, Bobrisky paid his father a visit to his house to celebrate with him on his birthday.

It is insightful to know that Bobrisky did not appear before his father as a woman as he always did but went back to his original self, dressed like a man.

No state in Nigeria is COVID-19 free – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has declared that no state in the country is COVID-19 free.

This was announced by NCDC’s Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, while speaking at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday.

Ihekweazu noted that a state can only talk about being Coronavirus free, when it is testing adequately.

“No state in Nigeria is COVID-19 free. No country in the world is COVID-19 free.

“We can only talk about a state being disease free when we have an effective tool to fight the disease. That will come when we have a vaccine.

“Until then, there is no easy way to say this. We have to keep pushing for these preventive measures. We have to develop our laboratory capability to test,” he said.

Cross River is the only state in Nigeria, where any case of COVID-19 has not been officially confirmed in the country.

There are currently 20,244 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Lagos has the highest number with 8,576. Abuja (FCT) and Kano have 1,567 and 1,190 cases respectively.

You don’t need a church wedding to be married, it isn’t in the scriptures – Nigerian Activist

Author and activist, Reno Omokri has shared his thoughts as regards the concept of church wedding saying it isn’t biblical.

In series of posts shared on his Facebook page, Reno said the concept of church weddings isn’t backed up by the scriptures.

According to Reno, a former media aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Jesus in the bible attended a wedding held at home and not a church. Reno said all that is needed for a wedding ceremony to take place,  is a man, his wife and their family members, not a church, pastor or priest.

He added that God simplified marriage, but Africans in copying the whites have complicated it.

He wrote : ”Someone said church wedding is necessary because pastors are God’s representatives on Earth. To that man, my question is this: What are your parents? Devil’s representative? No blessing on Earth is greater than parent’s blessing.”

”After God, parents. Read Christ’s parables regarding marriage-Luke 14:8-10. It does not involve a priest or pastor. My dear people, these European ideas about church wedding are doctrines of men, there is nothing divine or holy about it. Holy matrimony only involves the couple and their parents. That is why the only commandment amongst the Ten Commandments with a blessing attached to it is “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you”-Exodus 20:12”

Over 400m Malware infections detected in May

During April more than 400 million malware infections were detected, equating to over 10 million cases each day.

This was revealed by data compiled by Atlas VPN, which also showed that the number of infections worldwide fluctuated between 10 and 16 million daily cases, reaching the lowest point on 5 April and the highest on 16 April.

Central Asia suffered the largest number of local attacks, according to Kaspersky’s antivirus solutions. At least 32% of devices in Tajikistan were exposed to malware, followed by Uzbekistan, with 31%. In China, Kaspersky detected malware in nearly 27% of the devices that use their software.

The same month, Microsoft detected 6.5 million malware infections in different industries, although education was revealed as the main target, with 64% of attacks directed at this sector. Business and professional services came in second, with 9% of infections or 623 000 incidents.

With nearly 540 000 cases, retail and consumer goods experienced 8% of all infections, while the financial and insurance services industry had 5% of malware infections globally, with Microsoft detecting nearly 330 000 cases in this sector. Hot on its heels is the healthcare industry with nearly 270 000 infections or 4%.

Rachel Welsh, COO of Atlas VPN, says educational institutions were exposed to the largest number of malware attacks because criminals expect school staff or students are not well-trained in cyber security.

“If schools are planning on holding exams remotely, they should prepare and get experienced IT specialists to check the systems out,” she advises.

Obinwanne Okeke to plead guilty for $11 million US fraud

Obinwanne Okeke also known as Invictus Obi has indicated wish to plead guilty for the $11 million fraud he is being tried for in the United States (US).

United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said Okeke and at least six other persons were involved in the crimes.

“There is a probable cause to believe Okeke has conspired with several individuals to access computers without authorisation and using such access to cause the fraudulent wire transfer of funds,” FBI’s special agent Marshall Ward said in an affidavit he deposed to before Justice Lawrence Leonard, in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 2 2019.

The FBI agent said the investigations that nailed him began in July 2018 after Unatrac Holding Limited, an export sales office for Caterpillar heavy industry and farm equipment, in the United Kingdom was defrauded of $11 million through a phishing scheme.

Okeke, however, pleaded not guilty to the fraud charge against him. He has since then been in detention.

Nine months after, American authorities said Okeke, a Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 honoree, was ready to enter a guilty plea in court.

Already, a Senior United State District Judge, Rebecca Smith, has given an order approving the plea bargain arrangement.

“The Court has been advised that the defendant wishes to enter a plea of guilty,” Judge Smith said in her Order of April 24.

Invictus Obi – Obinwanne Okeke

“A United States Magistrate Judge is hereby authorised, with the consent of the defendant, to conduct the proceedings required by the Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 11 incident to the making of the plea. See 28 U.S.C. Section (b) (1); United States v. Dees, 125 F.3d 261 (5th Cir.1997).

“The defendant may consent to the United States Magistrate Judge conducting the proceedings on a form provided by the clerk.”

Smith disclosed that if after conducting such proceedings, the Magistrate Judge accepts the plea of guilty and the associated plea agreement, a presentence investigation shall be conducted and a report shall be prepared pursuant to Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 32, and a sentencing data shall be scheduled.

“If the plea of guilty is accepted, the District Judge will adjudicate guilt and will determine and impose a sentence.”

Magistrate Judge Robert Krask has been appointed to conduct the plea agreement hearing set for June 18 at the Norfolk Magistrate Courtroom 1.

Already Okeke had been made to forfeit at least $11 million in asset and an emerald shaped diamond engagement ring found on him when he was first arrested by federal agents as he was about leaving the U.S. on August 6 2019.

He had made previous appearances before separate judges for preliminary hearings in his bail applications but were declined.
