Brazilian Man Found Alive at Funeral Home After Being Declared Dead

An 88-year-old Brazilian man shocked funeral workers after he was found alive while preparations were being made for his wake.

Juraci Rosa Alves was admitted to a hospital on May 16 and was reportedly declared dead after suffering respiratory failure. His body was then transferred to a funeral home for routine post-death arrangements.

However, staff at the funeral home noticed unusual movement coming from Alves while preparing his body. According to funeral home supervisor Jacqueline Brogiato, workers became suspicious after seeing movement in his abdomen that appeared to be breathing.

Brogiato immediately began emergency care while waiting for medical responders. Paramedics quickly arrived, sedated and intubated Alves, and rushed him to a hospital in Presidente Prudente.

Family members said they were preparing for the funeral when they were suddenly informed that Alves was still alive. The unexpected discovery left relatives shocked and confused.

Police have now opened an investigation into the incident and registered the case as a possible “failure to provide assistance.” The doctor who initially declared Alves dead has not been publicly identified.

Alves, who lives in Emilianópolis, remains in intensive care in serious but stable condition. His family’s lawyer said the delay in receiving proper medical treatment may have worsened his health due to his age.

Meanwhile, the original hospital in Presidente Bernardes announced it would conduct an internal investigation into what happened.
