Over 1,200 people Dead in the Haiti 7.2-magnitude Earthquake

The death toll after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti has risen to 1,297 with more than 5,700 injured, according to the country’s civil protection agency.

Of the 1,297 fatalities, 1,054 are in the South administrative region, 119 are in Grand’Anse, 122 are in Nippes and two are in the Northwest region, the civil protection service reported on Sunday August 15.

The quake destroyed 13,694 homes and damaged another 13,785, officials from the agency said. The destruction has also pushed hospitals to the brink and blocked roads that would carry vital supplies.

Death toll from 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Haiti rises to over 1,200 people

“When it comes to medical needs, this is our biggest urgency. We have started to send medications and medical personnel to the facilities that are affected,” Prime Minister Ariel Henry said. “For the people who need urgent special care, we have evacuated a certain number of them, and we will evacuate some more today and tomorrow.”

The state of emergency is in effect for the Western Department, Southern Department, Nippes, and Grand’Anse.

The earthquake struck at 8:30 a.m. about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, with its epicenter about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud in the southwest part of the country. The location was about 96 kilometers (60 miles) west of the disastrous 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 2010 that killed an estimated 220,000 to 300,000 people.

Saturday’s quake was far less damaging than the one in 2010. A United Nations reconnaissance mission to the affected areas found “less significant damages than initially expected,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Sunday.

“The most urgent humanitarian needs are expected to be linked to the provision of medical assistance and water, sanitation and hygiene,” the organization said.

The earthquake is just the latest challenge for the struggling country, which is still dealing with fallout from the 2010 quake, and he assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last month.

“We’re concerned that this earthquake is just one more crisis on top of what the country is already facing — including the worsening political stalemate after the president’s assassination, Covid and food insecurity,” Jean-Wickens Merone, a spokesman with World Vision Haiti, said in a statement.

Zambian Opposition Candidate, Hakainde Hichilema wins Presidential Election

Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has defeated incumbent Edgar Lungu in Zambia’s presidential election, the electoral commission said on Monday, August 16, when releasing the final results from 156 constituencies, barring one.

The electoral commission said Hichilema got 2,810,777 votes against Lungu’s 1,814,201, with all but one of the 156 constituencies counted.

“I, therefore, declare that the said Hichilema to be president of Zambia,” electoral commission chairman, Esau Chulu, said in a packed results centre in the capital Lusaka.

It was Mr. Hichilema’s sixth attempt at winning the presidency. His supporters have been celebrating on the streets of the capital, Lusaka.

The outgoing president is yet to concede defeat and has indicated that he might challenge the result, which will be difficult, given the margin.

On Saturday, Lungu said that the election was “not free and fair” after incidents of violence against ruling Patriotic Front party agents in three provinces, and the party was consulting on its next course of action.

UPND officials dismissed Lungu’s statement as emanating from people “trying to throw out the entire election just to cling on to their jobs.”

Mr. Lungu’s six-year rule was criticised for alleged human rights abuses, corruption, a failing economy, and massive unemployment.

Hichilema, 59, a former CEO at an accounting firm before entering politics, now faces the task of trying to revive the country’s economic fortunes.

That would make the third time that power has shifted peacefully from a ruling party to the opposition since the southern African country’s independence from Britain in 1964.

Barcelona captains must reduce their salaries to ease Barcelona’s financial woes – Gerard Pique says

Gerard Pique has revealed that all Barcelona’s four club captains will be taking salary reductions to help the financially troubled club.

The Spain International already sacrificed its wages to help the club register new signings. His fellow captains Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto are expected to do the same soon.

Pique said he had to be the first to take the reduction so the club could register some of its new players in time for its opening game of the new 2021-22 LaLiga campaign, which Barcelona won 4-2 at the Nou Camp against Real Sociedad.

Gerard Pique insists his fellow captains Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto will reduce their salaries to ease Barcelona

The Catalan side lost club icon Lionel Messi because they couldn’t give him a new contract because of LaLiga’s strict financial fair play regulations, leaving him to make the shock switch to PSG last week.

Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia, who both started on Sunday, reportedly couldn’t have been registered without Pique’s salary reduction.

‘It’s what had to be done,’ the 34-year-old defender said.

‘The other captains will do the same soon. Because of a timing issue I had to be the first one so we could register the players. The captains have always intended to make the adjustments needed by the club. We are proud of this decision.’

There had been some reports that Alba had not intended to reduce his salary, which saw the left-back jeered by some returning fans on Sunday.

‘Sometimes there are misunderstandings,’ Pique said. ‘After last season ended, the captains talked and we were on the same page to try to reach a deal with the club.’

Alba said it hurt to hear ‘lies’ about his commitment to Barcelona and dismissed the notion that the club couldn’t keep Messi because other players didn’t want to reduce their salaries.

‘I’ve always been willing to help the club,’ he said.

‘No one should doubt me. I’ve been here for 10 years, and eight more in the youth squads. This is my home, the club of my life, and I’ll always help it.’

Barcelona’s debt is more than £1billion. The current president Joan Laporta blamed the previous administration of Josep Bartomeu for leaving the club in the critical situation that led to Messi’s departure.

IBB advised Jonathan to sit on Yar’Adua’s chair when the late President was sick – Femi Otedola

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola joins Nigerians felicitating with ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida who marks his 80th birthday (on Tuesday, August 17).

Wishing the retired general more rewarding years, Otedola thanked IBB for the role he played during the political logjam caused by the prolonged sickness of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010.

In his forthcoming book on business lessons (scheduled for release in November), Otedola revealed that Babangida sent a message through him to then Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to sit on the empty seat of the President in the next Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

With Yar’Adua failing to formally transfer power to his VP when he was flown abroad for medical treatment, there was tension across the nation as a result of the power vacuum, which led to public protests.

Writing on the need for entrepreneurs to engage with political authorities in one of the chapters, Otedola maintains that such a relationship will benefit the country. Entrepreneurs’ outreach and dialogue with political leaders, among many positives, will ensure stability and social coherence, guaranteeing economic progress.

“Worried by the tension and uncertainty, I decided to do something on my own,” he wrote. “In the first week of February 2010, I went to Minna, Niger state, along with Hajia Bola Shagaya, to commiserate with General Ibrahim Babangida over the death of his wife, Maryam. At his Hilltop residence, we spoke on a wide range of issues, but I told him I needed to discuss an urgent and vital issue. He took me to his study, where the two of us were alone. I told him that the state of the nation had been agitating my mind.”

Otedola said he asked Babangida: “Your Excellency, how can we get out of this logjam? The political heat is too much.”

Calm and resolute, IBB replied: ‘Femi, advise your friend that when he gets to the Council Chambers next week for the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, he should go and sit on the President’s chair.’ I found that fascinating and assured him I would pass the message across. I travelled back to Abuja by road in the evening and went straight to have dinner with Dr Jonathan. I did not waste time in delivering General Babangida’s message to him,” he wrote.

“He nodded and asked me, ‘What do you think?’

“I laughed and said, ‘Be a man, Your Excellency. Go and sit on that chair!’

“He looked at me for some time and responded that he would think about it.

“A week later, on Tuesday, February 9, the National Assembly adopted the famous ‘Doctrine of Necessity’ to make Dr Jonathan the Acting President pending the return of President Yar’Adua from his medical leave. Behind-the-scene moves by prominent Nigerians preceded this decision. The legislative resolution was unprecedented, but the nation had been tensed up. The fault lines were so stoked that an unusual solution was needed to address the unique situation.

“With Jonathan now legally empowered to act as President, there remained the critical optics: would he stand-in for the President confidently and authoritatively? Or would he try to maintain a subdued outlook? The following day was the FEC meeting. As Dr Jonathan entered the Council Chamber, he made to sit on the chair of the Vice President—his usual seat. As the protocol officer pulled out the VP’s chair, Dr Jonathan marched towards the seat reserved for the President. And he sat on it! That was the moment Dr Goodluck Jonathan took control of power. By that act, he sent a strong signal to all Nigerians that he was now in charge. The same day, Jonathan even reshuffled the cabinet.”

Yar’Adua died on May 5, 2010, and Jonathan was sworn in as his replacement, going on to win the 2011 presidential elections and serving one term in office.

In the book, Otedola said entrepreneurs must engage with political authorities because it is only when there is peace that the economy can boom.

He wrote:

“While many may see political engagement for entrepreneurs as one-sided—in the sense that only the entrepreneur benefits—the reality is that it could work both ways. I tapped into my political connections to contribute my little quota to resolving a power crisis that almost set the country on fire. This example is one of the several instances in which I used my access to the seat of power and political heavyweights to contribute to nation-building and national development. Entrepreneurs need to appreciate the fact that peace for the country is peace for their businesses, too. We need a stable and peaceful country first and foremost.”

“I was just thinking that Israel Goodnews Balogun will just tender an apology for calling me a Criminal but rather, he escalated everything and got too many people and lawyers involved.”

“Balogun is my brother and I don’t want to appear at the Court against my fellow Christian brother but for that Miracle Money Service and Teleporting my Spiritual son from Germany to France, the court cannot order me to prove it rather they should go and question the holy spirit that directed me because I don’t take any action without the instructions of the holy spirit.”

US flag at the US Embassy in Kabul has been taken down, Taliban takes Over

The American flag at the US embassy in Kabul has been taken down, marking a final step in the evacuation of the embassy, days earlier than US officials initially projected, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The US scrambled to evacuate embassy staff and top officials from its diplomatic compound in Afghanistan Sunday as Taliban fighters entered the city, Afghan government officials fled the country and gunfire was heard at Kabul airport, multiple sources told CNN.

Early Sunday, two sources familiar with the situation told CNN that the plan was to pull all US personnel from the embassy in Kabul over the next 72 hours.

Hours later, most US embassy staff had been moved to Kabul airport for flights out of the country.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told House lawmakers Sunday that the evacuation was a “highly dynamic and very risky operation,” even as he and other senior US officials worked to project a sense of control.

“This is not Saigon,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” when asked about President Joe Biden’s July assertion that under no circumstances would US personnel be airlifted out of Kabul in a replay of the US withdrawal from Vietnam in 1975.

Nigeria is stagnated for 40 Years – Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi says

Former Emir of Kano and ex-governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said Nigeria has not made any progress economically in the last 40 years.

The former CBN bank said this while speaking at a symposium organised in Kaduna on Saturday, August 14, to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Speaking at the symposium, he said;

“Calling me controversial or calling me an enemy or critic, will not make those facts go away. So, anywhere we go, we must face these facts. Am I happy about it on my 60th birthday? No. Because, 60 years ago when I was born, the United States government advisory was telling investors that Nigeria has a better economic future than Japan. Today, where are we and where is Japan?

It is not about one or two governments, it is about decades of a people throwing away opportunities and every time we are given a chance to make a change, we go back to the same old things.

And you know, when I have a platform like these, I have to talk. I have tried not to say much not because there is nothing to say or because I am afraid of speaking. The reason I have not spoken much in the last two years is because I don’t even have to say anything anymore, because all the things we were warning about have come.

In 1980, Nigeria’s GDP per capital on purchasing power parity basis was $2,180. In 2014, it appreciated by 50 per cent to $3,099. According to the World Bank, where were we in 2019? $2,229. At this rate in the next two years in terms of purchasing power parity, the average income of a Nigerian would have gone back to what it was in 1980 under Shehu Shagari. That means, in 40 years, no progress, we made zero progress; 40 years wasted.

Between 2014 and 2019, on the basis of this index of the purchasing power of the average income of an average Nigerian, we have wiped out all the progress made in 35 years. We have a responsibility as a people to rise and improve the lives of the people of this country.

It is no longer about government, political parties, traditional rulers, Emirs. The days are gone of saying one class of people whether they are Emirs or civil servants cannot talk. When there is fire, everyone has to go with a bucket of water. We need to understand how our economy works as a people, we need to understand our choices. 70 per cent of our challenges in this country from insecurity to  herder/farmer clashes, all have their roots in economy. Even this shout about restructuring is about economics, it is about resources. We need to grow this economy and make it work for the poor people.

I remember when we started going after the bankers, someone called me and said, you know you are a young man, you don’t know what you are doing, you will not succeed. What have we done today? So far, three or four of the wealthiest and powerful bank CEOs in this country have gone to jail and nothing happened.

You can fight any system, you don’t need a large number. People can have temporary powers to use, but the truth will always prevail. So, when I was suspended as CBN governor, I made a famous statement that you can suspend a man, but you cannot suspend the truth. And this is the truth that has come out.

As His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto said recently, this country has a problem. We cannot ignore the fact that things are not working. When you are in a society that is so abnormal, you cannot afford to be a conformist, because if you all conform, things will not change.

Many years ago, when I was screaming about the billions being spent on fuel subsidy, I remember there was an attempt to attack my house in Kano, then I was in the CBN. Where are we today? We are face to face with the reality. That fuel subsidy is unsustainable. Now, when the decision is taken, it will be more painful than if they had removed it five or 10 years ago.

I only speak to the best of my understanding of what I see about the country and I have paid the price, but Nigerians are the ones paying the real price. It is the price you see in increased poverty, it is a price you see in insecurity, in high rate of inflation, in loss of values of our currency, in the numbers around malnutrition, unemployment, out of school children, maternal mortality and infant mortality”.

The former Emir also spoke on negative effects of Almajirai system of education. He said;

”Since I am wearing two caps as an economist and an Islamic scholar, I need to say that, at the level of the North and Muslims, we need to look hard at ourselves and question the choices we have made.

As Emir of Kano, we got scholars to sit for three years. We drafted a Muslim Code of Personal Status that began to address some of these issues. That law was ready in 2019, but it has not been passed.

I also sent it to the chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, the governor of Plateau State and said in case any of the governors need it, give it to them. I have not heard anything. But we keep talking about poverty in the North. We keep talking about Almajirai. These Almajirai did not produce themselves.

If you cannot maintain one wife and you marry three and if you cannot maintain three children and you have 17, if you leave those children on the street without education, without training, you are going to have young men that would be problem to our society.

The youths that you see on drugs, those in stealing and kidnapping are all products of that social system. And we need to ask ourselves, is this what Islam said we should have? Are these the children that Islam said we should have?”

Happy Taliban militants declare ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’

The Taliban has declared the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ after capturing the Air force, Army bases and the presidential palace of the country on Sunday, August 15.

This comes as US, UK and Western nations hastily evacuate their citizens and diplomatic staff out of the country.

This comes after Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani departed the country on Sunday as the Taliban advanced further into the capital Kabul.

Taliban fighters entered Kabul and demanded the unconditional surrender of the central government.

Footage on social media showed the militants celebrating as they took over the Bagram airbase, the heavily fortified military base that has housed US troops the last two decades.

The militants could also be seen in the presidential palace, beaming with smiles as they posed for photos while another set of militants posed in the conference room used by the president while he ruled.

Also disturbing footage on social media showed thousands scrambling to get out of the capital amid fears the militants could reimpose a brutal rule that eliminated women and minority rights when they last held power.

Helicopters could also be seen racing overhead throughout the day to evacuate personnel from the US and UK Embassy while smoke rose near the embassy compound as staff destroyed important sensitive documents.

Many cities fell to the Taliban without a fight after tribal elders stepped in to negotiate the withdrawal of government forces in order to avoid bloodshed.

The militants told foreigners in Kabul to either leave or register their presence with Taliban administrators.

Thousands of Afghan nationals could also be seen rushing to the Pakistan border on Sunday, in a move signalling the end of the 20-year intervention by the US and NATO after the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington DC.

With these turn of events, the Taliban will now restart it’s hardcore Islamic rule in the country where women don’t come out during the day and if they no part of their body or face must show and they must walk with either thier husband or father.

”*No Responsible Man Will Marry You When You Post Party Pictures, Jet Photos And Everything On Social Media” Pastor David Ibiyeomie warns (Video)

Clergyman, David Ibiyeomie, has cautioned people to be careful of what they post on social media.

The Rivers state-based clergyman while preaching in his church recently, said social media depicts the true identity of a person., According to him, when an unmarried woman goes to a party in Transcorp and shares the photos online, no responsible man will marry her.

In his words

”Social media depicts your true identity. When every Saturday you go to a party, you show, no responsible married man will marry you. Social media is the first thing to show who you are.

Mind what you put on social media You forget that if you snap in Transcorp, everybody has gone there. You are not married, so who took you to Transcorp? You don’t have wisodm. You snap in a jet, who carried you into a jet?

Be careful with what you put on social media. Once you snap in Transcorp, you snap in Dubai, they would begin to ask, how did you get there? So the man who wants to marry you will withdraw.

Please be very careful. Social media shows your true identity. Mind what you put there”

He also added that international companies now check the social media handles of prospective employees before they offer employment.

Kenyan Governor, Alfred Mutua and Spouse, Lilian go their separate ways

Governor of Kenyan state, Machakos, Dr. Alfred Mutua and his wife Lillian Nganga have separated.

Lilian Ng’ang’a who announced that she will be stepping down as Machakos County First lady, said she decided to end the relationship two months ago in what she termed as winds of change.

Revealing that she now wants to concentrate on charity work, Lilian added that she and Alfred will remain close friends heading to the future.

She wrote;

“The only constant in life is change, and we must be present and aware to appreciate and embrace it.

“Winds of change blew my way and two months ago, I decided to end the long term relationship with Dr Alfred Mutua. We had a good run, and I am forever grateful to God, he brought us together. We remain friends.”

Alfred who confirmed the split, stated that Lillian has been an excellent First Lady and even though she will do some projects under the Lillian Nganga foundation, they’ve agreed she can continue with her county projects.

The statement read;

“There is a song by Roger Whittaker that has the line: “the first time we said hello, we started to say goodbye.”

Lillian and I have been a blessing to each other. Two months ago, we decided to slowly disengage. We are in amicable terms and remain very close as friends. We will continue to talk, meet and share ideas constantly.

Lillian has been an excellent First Lady and even though she will do some projects under the Lillian Nganga foundation, we have agreed she can continue with her county projects.

She will be a close advisor as I Govern Machakos County and run for President because I trust her sharp insight and heart. She has always been my number one fan. Our love for each other is permanent but I think at times, space and new directions are important.

I thank God for bringing Lillian into my life and the many ways we have made each other grow. We have had a laugh and at times a tear but all in all we have been a power couple and very happy. We celebrate life and are pleased that we have reached this decision in a mature, agreeable manner.

I am a happy and blessed man and we have agreed we will protect and support each other”.

“Our team has arrested three people including a Nigerian who used to supply the drugs to these local peddlers, who further were distributing or supplying in the market. The team totally recovered 335 grams of mephedrone worth Rs 67 lakhs,” said Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, ANC.

‘Covid-19 pandemic’ babies ‘have lower IQs’ – New study says

Scientists from Brown University in Rhode Island have found that Children born during the Covid pandemic may have lower IQs.

According to the research, babies born since March 2020 have worse cognitive, verbal and motor skills than children who entered the world before coronavirus and it maybe due to reduced interactions during lockdowns.

Average IQs for children aged three months to three years old dropped from around 100 in the decade before the pandemic to 79 during the pandemic.

The research adds that the drop in IQ was worse in boys and those from poorer backgrounds, scientists said.

Lockdowns have meant children have significantly less interaction with the outside world, leading to ‘shockingly’ low cognitive development.

Whether or not the fall in development will affect children in later life is uncertain, the researchers said. Babies’ brains are more malleable than adults and it is likely they will be able to recover.

Paediatrician Dr Sean Deoni, lead author of the study, said the drop-off in IQ scores was significant.

Babies born during the Covid-19 pandemic

He told The Guardian: ‘It’s not subtle by any stretch. You don’t typically see things like that, outside of major cognitive disorders.’

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed and published on medrxiv, looked at 672 children in Rhode Island.

Of those, 308 were born before January 2019, 176 were born between January 2019 and March 2020 and 188 were born after July 2020.

Scientists tested the children on verbal, non-verbal and early-learning skills to assess their development.

All the children used for the research were born at full-term and were mostly white.

Experts found children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds like blacks and asians fared worse in the IQ tests.

Dr Deoni said: ‘Parents are stressed and frazzled. That interaction the child would normally get has decreased substantially.’

The authors wrote: ‘Fear of infection and possible employment loss has placed stress on parents, while parents who could work from home faced challenges in both working and providing full-time attentive childcare.

‘For pregnant individuals, fear of attending prenatal visits also increased maternal stress, anxiety, and depression.

‘Children born during the pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor, and overall cognitive performance compared to children born pre-pandemic.

‘Moreover, we find that males and children in lower socioeconomic families have been most affected.

‘Results highlight that even in the absence of direct SARS-CoV-2 infection and Covid illness, the environmental changes associated Covid pandemic is significantly and negatively affecting infant and child development.’

IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient and it is used to measure mental ability.

Historically, IQ is a score achieved by dividing a person’s mental age, obtained with an intelligence test, by their age.

The resulting fraction is then multiplied by 100 to obtain an IQ score. An IQ of 100 has long been considered the median score.

Nigerian Govt. implements new price lists for drivers license and vehicle plate numbers

The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of new rates for vehicle number plates and driving licences across the country.

A statement from the Joint Tax Board states that drivers license of three years duration would now go for N10,000 as against its previous price of N6,000. This excludes bank charges. Drivers licence for five years is now N15,000 from N10,000 while motorcycle/tricycle driving licence (three years) goes for N5,000 from N3,000 while the one for five years attracts N8,000 from N5,000.

Private and commercial number plates would now go for N18,750 as against the old rate of N12,500. Fancy number plate which was N80,000 is now N200,000; motorcycle number plate is N5,000 from N3,000 while articulated number plates (three plates) attract N30,000 from N20,000. For these rates, the minimum increase is 50 per cent.

Out of series number plate has also been revised to N50,000 from N40,000 while government fancy number plate is N20,000 against the former N15,000 rate.

The decision for the increment was taken at the 147th meeting of the JTB, which held in Kaduna on March 25.

A letter by the JTB titled ‘Implementation of the revised rates for vehicles number plates and driver’s licence in Nigeria’, dated July 30, 2021 and signed by the board secretary, Obomeghfe Nana-Aisha, has directed various federal and state agencies to commence the implementation of the rates.

The letter reads

“You may wish to recall that at the 147th meeting of the Joint Tax Board held in Kaduna, Kaduna State on March 25, 2021, the board approved revised rates for the sale of vehicle number plates and driving licence in line with the recommendations of Appraisal and Technical Committee of the JTB.

In the light of the foregoing, we wish to inform you that the Chairman, JTB, has approved Thursday, August 1, 2021, as the commencement date for the implementation of the new rates.”

Disgruntled Man opens fire in Plymoth, killing 5 persons, before killing himself

A gunman went “berserk” on Thursday evening, August 12, and opened fire in a house in Plymouth, England, killing 5, before taking his own life.

Armed police and paramedics were sent to the Keyham area of Plymouth, near the city’s docks, at about 6:10pm in response to what was described as a “serious firearms incident” on Thursday evening.

Man opens fire in Plymoth, killing 5, before taking his own life

Four people – two females and two males – were confirmed dead at the scene while a third woman died in hospital, Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement early on Friday morning, August 13.

One of the victims was a child.

The gunman then escaped through a park behind the house before killing himself.

The gunman has been identified as Jake Davison, a scaffolder in his 20s.

Davison claims he was born in Arizona, USA, on his Facebook page.

He has previously shared US propaganda, Donald Trump quotes, and likes Incel TV, a support group for “involuntary celibates”.

Before he carried out the mass shooting, he uploaded a series of disturbing YouTube videos.

In one, Davison complained that he was still a “fat” and “ugly virgin”.

He told his followers: “Most people would have been completely utterly broken if they had lived my f*****g life…I’m surprised I even made it this far to be honest.”

Davison continued: “I’m always gonna keep trying, as long as you’re breathing air.

“It’s like in the Terminator, the whole premise of the Terminator movies is that everything’s rigged against you, there’s no hope for humanity.

“We’re on the brink of extinction, these machines are unstoppable killing machines that can’t be beaten. But yet, humanity still tries to fight to the end.

“I know it’s a movie but I like to think sometimes I’m a Terminator.”

The Plymouth shooting is said to be the worst mass shooting in Britain since 2010. Police said the incident is not terror-related.

Sharron Turner, who lives behind the scene of the shooting, told The Times newspaper that a gunman had “kicked in” the front door of a semidetached house before shooting a young mother and her daughter, who was aged about five.

The gunman then escaped through a park behind the house while shooting randomly at locals as he made his way to a park.

Sharron said: “This was when the shooter kicked in the door of a house and randomly started shooting. He ran from the house shooting as he ran and proceeded to shoot at a few people in the linear park up from the drive.”

It is believed the victims included Davison’s mum, sister and brother.

Luke Pollard, a local MP described the shooting as “unspeakably awful”.

“Police have confirmed that six people have died in the shooting in #keyham in #plymouth. More people are being treated for their injuries in hospital. Just so unspeakably awful. My condolences and thoughts are with the families,” Luke Pollard tweeted.

British Home Secretary Priti Patel described the incident as “shocking” and urged people to follow police advice.

Police have cordoned off the area and said investigations were continuing.

Nicki Minaj and spouse sued by a lady for sexual harassment

A woman who accused rapper Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, of sexual assault during high school, has filed a lawsuit against the couple, alleging that they harassed and intimidated her while trying to convince her to change her story.

The case dates back to 1994, when Jennifer Hough, then 16, reported to the police that Mr. Petty, a 16-year-old she had known growing up in Jamaica, Queens had raped her after leading her into a home at knife point, the lawsuit says.

Mr. Petty was arrested that day and was charged with first-degree rape, and subsequently pleaded guilty to attempted rape, said Kim Livingston, a spokeswoman with the Queens district attorney’s office. He served about four and a half years in prison, according to inmate records.

According to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Eastern New York, Ms. Hough, 43, and her family members started to receive communications from people claiming to be connected with Ms. Minaj and Mr. Petty shortly after Mr. Petty was arrested last year for failing to register as a sex offender in California.

The lawsuit alleges harassment and witness intimidation, as well as intentional infliction of emotional distress by Ms. Minaj and Mr. Petty, and seeks unspecified damages. It also alleges sexual assault and battery against Mr. Petty, referring to the mid-90s case.

The lawsuit says that an intermediary offered Ms. Hough $20,000 in exchange for signing a prepared statement recanting the accusation.

At one point last year, the lawsuit says, Ms. Minaj called Ms. Hough, saying that she had heard Ms. Hough was willing to “help out”; days later, it says, Ms. Hough and her family members received an “onslaught of harassing calls and unsolicited visits” from people she believed to be associated with the couple.

Ms. Hough “has not worked since May of 2020 due to severe depression, paranoia, constant moving, harassment, and threats from the defendants and their associates,” the lawsuit says. “She is currently living in isolation out of fear of retaliation.”

According to the lawsuit, Ms. Hough was on her way to school on Sept. 16, 1994, when she ran into Mr. Petty, a boy she knew from the neighborhood.

The lawsuit says that Mr. Petty held a knife at her back as he led her to a house around the corner, where Ms. Hough said he raped her. The suit says that Ms. Hough escaped, ran to her high school and told security guards, who called the police.

In an interview, Ms. Hough said that as her case was prosecuted, she faced harassment and retaliation in the neighborhood, prompting her family to force her to attend a court hearing for Mr. Petty and request that the charges be dropped, a request that was denied. At the time, the suit says, Mr. Petty had already accepted a plea deal.

Ms. Hough said in an interview that she left New York City after the ordeal, and for years, it remained in the past: “I didn’t think it would be something that would come back and slap me in the face 20-something years later.”

But in 2018, Ms. Minaj posted about her relationship with Mr. Petty on Instagram, and questions about his status as a sex offender surfaced.

Ms. Hough said in an interview that she had spoken to YouTube bloggers to defend herself and respond to an Instagram comment from Ms. Minaj that stated that Ms. Hough and Mr. Petty had been in a relationship at the time of the assault and that Mr. Petty was younger than Ms. Hough. (They were never in a relationship, and they were the same age, according to the lawsuit.

After Mr. Petty was arrested in 2020, Ms. Hough reconnected with a childhood friend from Queens, the lawsuit says, and told him she “wished it could all just go away forever.” Ms. Hough said that the friend replied, “I can make that happen.”

The suit says that a few days later, the friend told Ms. Hough that Ms. Minaj had asked for her phone number, and the rapper later called her and offered to fly Ms. Hough out to Los Angeles or fly her publicist out to Ms. Hough; Ms. Hough said she declined and told the rapper, “I need you to know woman to woman, that this happened.”

The lawsuit says there were then a series of encounters where Ms. Hough or her family members were offered inducements if she would recant: $500,000 at one point, $20,000 at another, with a proposed bonus that Ms. Minaj would send birthday videos to Ms. Hough’s daughter. Ms. Hough said she declined.

Ms. Hough said in the interview that she never expressed interest in a bribe and was adamantly against recanting her story.

“If I lie now and say that I lied then, you know what that does?” she said. “Do you know what that’s going to say to my two little girls, or even my sons?”

Ms. Hough said in the interview that at one point she told the intermediary that the $500,000 offer was “not good enough.” She said she had been trying to deflect the conversation, not to express interest in a bribe. Tyrone Blackburn, a lawyer representing Ms. Hough, said Ms. Hough’s comment was an effort to dissuade the intermediary from thinking she would accept anything.

At one point last fall, the suit says, Ms. Hough was contacted by a lawyer for Mr. Petty, who asked her about a recantation letter. In response to threatening calls and her own growing paranoia, the suit says that Ms. Hough moved three times in one year.

“I feel like I’m living in secret,” she said in the interview, “like I can’t tell people my exact location.”

Ms. Hough is suing Nicki and Kenneth for intentional infliction of emotional distress, harassment, and witness intimidation. She is also suing Petty for sexual assault related to the 1995 conviction.

Manchester United beats Leeds United 5-1, thanks to Fernandes and Pogba

Bruno Fernandes scored an opening-day hat-trick while Paul Pogba proved why he’s one of the best midfielders by supplying four assists as Manchester United swept Leeds aside in a 5-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 14.

On a day when £75m new signing Jordan Sancho made his debut and new signing Raphael Varane was revealed to the fans in the stadium, United players knew they just had to turn up – and they did in style.

Portugal midfielder, Fernandes opened the scoring on the half-hour after receiving a wonderful pass from Paul Pogba.

English Premier League: Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba make headlines as Manchester United rout Leeds United 5-1

Just two minutes into the second half, Luke Ayling’s thunderous strike after enjoying space 30 yards away from goal, drew Leeds level.

Two minutes later, Mason Greenwood who started as the main striker, restored Manchester United’s lead after another superb pass from Paul Pogba, before Fernandes’ low shot was ruled to have crossed the line by referee Paul Tierney after a check of goal line technology – following another pass from Paul Pogba.

3-1… This was surely turning into the Pogba-Fernandes show.

Fernandez quickly completed his hat-trick with a thumping finish after a nice pass from Victor Lindelof, before Fred added United’s fifth goal in 14 minutes from Paul Pogba’s cross.

This was  Pogba’s fourth assist of the afternoon, and if he keeps up with such performances, a new bumper contract won’t be far off.

Leeds’ manager, Marcelo Bielsa was fuming on the sidelines but there was nothing he could do about it. His side were prepared for the match but United, ready for an assault on the premier league title and coaches by Ole Solskjaer were just too good for them.

It was Fernandes’ first hat-trick since he moved to Old Trafford in January 2020 and only the second by a Red Devils player since Robin van Persie’s title-winning effort against Aston Villa in 2013.

Fernandes now follows Anthony Martial as the only Manchester United player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Van Persie – and the first to do it in front of fans.

Fernandes’ last hat-trick was for Sporting Lisbon in an 8-1 hammering of Belenenses in front of just over 5,000 in May 2019.

Chelsea beats Crystal Palace 3 0, A good start

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea started off the 2021/22 Premier League campaign with a blistering 3-0 home win over London club, Crystal Palace on Saturday, August 14.

Chelsea which bouyed by the signing of Romelu Lukaku, with premier league glory their ultimate mission this season, were dominant and controlled proceedings right from the begining.

Tuchel opted to start both Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho in midfield. From minute one, the pair were a real threat in the heart of the pitch. Jorginho was able to quickly control the play and cause real problems for Palace’s backline. As for Kovacic, his bursting runs caused havoc for Crystal Palace throughout the game in what was an impressive display from the pair.

On the 26th minute, a free kick just outside the 18 yard presented itself for Chelsea.

Mount and Marcos Alonso positioned to play it but it was Alonso who curled a left footed  excellent free-kick to give Chelsea the lead.

Just five minutes before halftime, Christian Pulisic doubled the Blues’ lead making it 2-0 at halftime.

Trevoh Chalobah, an academy product, was making his first debut for the club’s first team this season, and in a surprising turn of events in  the second half, Chalobah scored a rocketing shot to ensure all three points for the Blues.

Chelsea begin hunt for premier league title with 3-0 win over Crystal Palace

With Lukaku yet to make his debut, the Blues’ fans can only dream of what the possibilities are going forward with such a team that last season won the UEFA Champions league against a highly favored Manchester City side.

Brentford makes a big ‘comeback’ to premier league after 74 years, beats Arsenal 2 0

Brentford F.C celebrated their return to the English premier league after a 74-year absence with a memorable 2-0 victory over Arsenal as the 2021/2022 EPL season kicked off today, August 13.

Brentford were vibrant and energetic at the Brentford Community Stadium, teaching the Gunners the art of football in a  90 minutes game of football that was heartbreaking for any Arsenal fan.

Brentford deserved the lead they got after 22 minutes when Sergi Canos drove low past keeper Bernd Leno at the near post, even though Arsenal players claimed that the ball had gone out of play in the build-up to the goal..

Emile Smith Rowe, Arsenal youngster and the club’s best player in the game tested Brentford keeper David Raya and was denied a goal.

Raya also denied Nicolas Pepe late on – before the home fans celebrated when they scored a second goal with 17 minutes left through Christian Norgaard his first goal in English football, after trying over 50 times.

Brentford celebrate their return to premier league after 74 year absence with 2-0 win over Arsenal

Arsenal, were without strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while new £50m defender Ben White was responsible for Christian Norgaard’s header.

Even though Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta was missing strikers Lacazette and Aubameyang, while Saka only started on the bench,  the team’s lack of pace, panache, resolve, and a coherent plan when they needed to fight their way back into contention was alarming.

Brentford’s supporters celebrated wildly at the final whistle, and though it’s early days for them in the premier league, they can celebrate being top of the league for the next 12 hours – a big deal for a club that’s been away for 74 years!

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that Nigeria’s unclaimed share dividends hits N170bn

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that the total unclaimed dividend in the Nigerian capital market stood at N170 billion as of December 2020.

The Director-General, SEC, Mr Lamido Yuguda, disclosed this on Friday, August 13 at the second post-Capital Market Committee (CMC) virtual news conference.

Yuguda said the figure had increased when compared with N158.44 billion total unclaimed dividend as of December 2019 because of poor identity management and multiple subscriptions of investors.

“We have problems with identity management in the Nigerian capital market and this is really one of the things the commission is trying to resolve.

“We have set up a high powered committee to look at the issue, people bought shares under false names and multiple subscriptions.

“There is a problem with the process but there is a problem with us too as people because if you are buying securities using your own wealth; why will you use another persons name, why will you use a name that will not be traceable to you.

“This became an issue after the introduction of BVN because BVN is tied to only to one name,” Yuguda said.

He noted that SEC in June constituted a Committee on Identity Management for the Nigerian Capital Market in order to address the unclaimed dividend issue.

“The committee is chaired by Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and is expected to harmonise various databases of investors, and facilitate data accuracy in the market.

“We are optimistic that the outcome of this committee’s assignment would address the challenges of identity management and help resolve some of the issues we face in the areas of unclaimed dividend, direct cash settlement and multiple subscription,” he added.

Over 200,000 migrants detained in one month over the US-Mexican Border !

The number of migrants detained at the US-Mexico border in July exceeded 200,000 for the first time in 21 years, government data has revealed..

According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a total of 212,672 migrants were apprehended in July, Its highest level in 21 years including an all-time high of 19,000 unaccompanied minors.

The July figure represents the highest monthly total since April 2000 – the latest sign of the growing humanitarian crisis facing the Joe Biden administration .

July’s numbers are a 13% increase from June, when over approximately 188,000 migrants were detained by US border control as they traveled across the 2000 mile border.. In May, 180,000 migrants were stopped in attempted crossings.

Migrants detained at US-Mexico border exceed 200,000 in one month, its highest level in 21 years

On Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas described the situation as “one of the toughest challenges” the country faces.

“It is complicated, changing and involves vulnerable people at a time of a global pandemic,” he said.

In early August, the Biden administration announced that it would indefinitely use a Trump-era pandemic policy that allows the US to swiftly expel undocumented migrants. Unaccompanied children and some families are exempt.

CBP data shows that 27% of the migrants detained last month had at least one prior encounter with authorities in the past year. The remaining 154,288 were recorded as “unique individuals”. Between 2014 and 2019, the re-encounter rate stood at 14%.

Tens of thousands of people from the Central American nations of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have tried to enter the US in recent years.

The reasons migrants give for undertaking the dangerous journey include family, better economic opportunity, or the chance to escape violence and corruption.

Breaking News! Over 227 dead as Haiti struck by 7.2-magnitude earthquake

At least 227 people have died after Haiti was struck by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that reduced churches, hotels and homes to rubble, in the latest tragedy to hit a Caribbean nation already mired in profound humanitarian and political crises and still reeling from the recent assassination of its president.

The earthquake on Saturday, which struck the country’s southwest at 8.29am local time, was felt across the Caribbean and rekindled painful memories of the devastating 2010 quake that killed more than 200,000 people.

The quake sparked panic in the capital, Port-au-Prince, much of which was levelled by the 2010 disaster. One local, Carmelle Charles, broke down in tears as she recalled fleeing outside after the latest earthquake jolted her home in the Delmas neighbourhood.

“I raced outside with tears in my eyes … because so many images of 12 January 2010 were flashing in my mind. I hope this won’t be the same,” the 37-year-old businesswoman said.

The exact extent of the destruction was not immediately clear but the prime minister, Ariel Henry, who has been leading Haiti since the recent assassination of the president, Jovenel Moïse, said several regions had suffered substantial damage, as well as numerous fatalities.

“I extend my sympathies to the relatives of the victims of this violent earthquake,” Henry tweeted, as fears over the death toll grew and hospitals filled with the wounded.

The dead reportedly include the former senator Gabriel Fortuné, whose body was reportedly pulled from a collapsed hotel in the coastal town of Les Cayes.

Images circulating on social media suggested the south-west of the island near the quake’s epicentre, about 80 miles from the capital, had been particularly badly affected.

Photographs showed shell-shocked residents wandering through the streets and smashed vehicles in the towns of Les Cayes and Jérémie. One image showed the spire of the 19th-century St Louis King of France Cathedral in Jérémie had collapsed. Another showed the dust-caked and seemingly lifeless body of a man being hauled from the wreckage of a building.

Jeanty Dorméus said his 38-year-old brother, Vilfort Dorméus, had been killed when his home collapsed in Les Cayes, where panicked residents reportedly fled into the mountains for fear of a tsunami.

“Haiti is unlucky, there’s always something wrong,” said Dorméus, a 41-year-old tailor from Port-au-Prince. “Nobody in the family was expecting something like this.”

A journalist for Haiti’s Le Nouvelliste, Robenson Geffrard, said the hospital in Les Cayes had been overwhelmed by the number of injured patients being brought in. Haiti’s civil protection office said at least 225 people had died in the earthquake.

Akim Kikonda, Catholic Relief Services’ representative in Haiti, said that, unlike 2010, Port-au-Prince seemed to have been largely spared. But the situation was far worse in the south-west. “I’m hearing about a lot of houses and some public buildings that have been seriously damaged. Some of them have collapsed completely, so people are outside and they don’t have houses,” Kikonda said.

One aid worker colleague had tried to make the 60-mile drive from Cayes to Jérémie but had been forced to turn back. “The road was completely blocked by a landslide and a huge crack in the road. So it looks like we can really expect significant damage in that area,” he said.

Haiti’s US ambassador, Bocchit Edmond, was one of many who compared Haiti’s latest natural disaster to the cataclysmic 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck 11 years ago. “The January 12 of 2010 feelings are back to haunt us. Natural disaster continues to assault #Haiti,” he tweeted.

Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, was still recovering from that disaster on 7 July this year when armed raiders stormed the residence of President Jovenel Moïse and killed him for reasons that remain obscure.

Haitian police have blamed the audacious crime on a mostly Colombian team of mercenaries, 18 of whom were captured and three killed after the crime. A US-based Haitian pastor who had reputedly harboured dreams of becoming his country’s leader has also been detained. But few believe the true masterminds have been caught. In an interview late last month one senior minister said he was convinced the “big fish” behind the crime remained at large. Haiti’s former first lady, Martine Moïse, who survived the attack, has hinted powerful members of the country’s oligarchy were responsible.

Some observers fear the still unsolved murder has the potential to thrust an already profoundly impoverished nation into a new chapter of political and social volatility, a bleak outlook Saturday’s earthquake will do nothing to improve. Henry urged Haiti’s 11 million citizens to show responsibility and solidarity in the face of what he called the country’s “dramatic situation”.

“L’Union fait la force,” Henry tweeted, quoting the country’s motto: strength through unity.

PSG planning to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to play alongside Lionel Messi

French giants, Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly plotting an audacious move to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to play alongside Lionel Messi.

This comes days after the Ligue 1 side completed the signing of Messi this week following his shock exit from Barcelona.

According to Diario AS, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is interested in signing Juventus star Ronaldo, should Mbappe decide to leave for Real Madrid.

It is said that Al-Khelaifi is not open to selling Mbappe this summer despite believing that the French striker will not sign a new deal to take his stay at the Parc des Princes past this season.

While it will be a blow if Mbappe leaves on a free, Ronaldo will also be available for nothing next summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal at Juventus.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes is said to be ‘aware of everything’ and that he would have extra motivation for the move.

Should Ronaldo join PSG next summer and sign a two-year deal with the club, it would take him to the age of 39.

5 kids killed by ‘abandoned grenade’ as they were playing in Borno

Five children were killed when a disused grenade they were playing with exploded in Ngala, a community in Borno state on Friday, August 13.

According to militiamen in the community, the grenade exploded in the hands of the children while they were playing with it.

“The five children picked up the explosive while herding in a field outside the town and it exploded in their hands as they were playing with it. Two of them died on the spot while the other three died in hospital in Mada, inside Cameroo”  anti-jihadist militiaman Umar Kachalla told AFP

Another militiaman, Umar Ari, confirmed the incident.

The Nigerian military is yet to react to the development.

In December 2019, nine people were killed and 26 injured when an explosive device went off on a crowded bridge linking Gamboru and Fotokol.

Residents blamed the explosion on a grenade disguised as a toy that, they said, had been given to some children as a gift by a Boko Haram insurgent.Five children killed by grenade they were playing with in Borno

The defendants, sometime in February 2020 in Abuja, conspired and defrauded Molten Oil and Gas Nigeria limited through a phony contract financing agreement to supply two trucks of 40,000 litres of diesel each, to Ilorin and Kano Airports for the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria. However, he further ruled that the defendant can file his bail application to him or any other vocation judge, pending reassignment of the case.

61-year-old Granny, engages to 24-year-old Boyfriend (photos)

A grandma, aged 61, is engaged to her 24-year-old lover.

Cheryl McGregor and Quran McCain, from Rome, Georgia, United States took to Instagram to announce their engagement.

They also shared a video of the moment McCain got down on one knee inside a restaurant to ask Cheryl to marry him.

“She said yes. You make me a simp but I love you and it’s nothing but forward from here,” the caption on the Instagram post reads.

Despite a 37-year age gap, the couple insists their sex life is fantastic and they have great chemistry.

Quran McCain, 24 and his now-fiancé, Cheryl McGregor, 61, met when he was just 15, but there were no romantic feelings until last year.

Cheryl, a grandma-of-17, has children who are older than Quran. Yet, Quran say they never think of the age difference “because Cheryl has a very young spirit, soul and heart”.

Cheryl admitted she does get upset by the hateful comments posted online where she proudly shares videos of their lives, but does her best to ignore them.

Grandmother, 61, engaged to 24-year-old boyfriend

The couple first met when they worked at fast food restaurant Dairy Queen in 2012 in Rome, Georgia.

Cheryl’s son Chris was Quran’s manager, and she would visit his workplace to check on him or get a meal, but Quran was only 15 at the time so there was no romantic involvement.

“We didn’t think much of each other – she drove a baby blue Carrera and that’s the only reason I noticed her!” Quran said.

Grandmother, 61, engaged to 24-year-old boyfriend

He eventually left his job and the pair lost contact, until November 4 last year, when Quran went to the convenience store where Cheryl was working as a cashier.

Quran said: “I used to see her every day, she would always be so happy, but today she was sad and I asked her what was wrong and she was crying.”

Cashier Cheryl was upset she had posted a video of her dancing on her TikTok and was receiving hate comments, and Quran helped comfort her.

They stayed in touch, and even made some videos of them dancing together which went viral. The couple got closer and eventually their relationship blossomed into a romantic one.

Grandmother, 61, engaged to 24-year-old boyfriend

Cheryl is only six years younger than Quran’s grandmother and eight years younger than his grandfather.

Cheryl’s youngest daughter is 29, making her years older than Quran.

Quran said: “Nobody was accepting, everyone thought we were joking or thought it was all games.

“Some of her seven kids turned on her due to her dating a younger black man.

“She was very hurt. It hurt her because she raised them to not be like that.”

But Quran insists his family were accepting as they could see how happy they were together.

Grandmother, 61, engaged to 24-year-old boyfriend

Despite all the hate, the couple try to remain positive and say that their fans help keep them together.

They got engaged on July 31 and hope to get married very soon.

Quran said: “Keep doing you, do what makes you happy. At the end of day everyone’s gonna judge you for something so you might as well do what you feel is right and never let someone take your peace.”

Cheryl said: “Don’t look for love because it will find you, because I wasn’t looking for love and it found me and it’s amazing.”

Young Indian innovator dies as his helicopter rotor blade slashes his neck while testing it (video)

A school dropout who aspired to build a helicopter has died after one of the blades of his helicopter prototype slashed his throat while he was testing it.

24-year-old Sheikh Ismail Sheikh Ibrahim, a school dropout from Maharashtra’s Fulsawangi village in Mahagaon tehsil, India, had built the prototype of a single-seater helicopter by welding steel pipes.

His passion was to do something extraordinary to bring fame to his village. So, he decided to build a chopper named “Munna Helicopter” because that was his nickname.

His friend Sachin told Times of India, “Inspired by the character of Rancho in the film ‘3 Idiots”, Ismail wanted to do something unique and hence decided to build a helicopter in the village. After gathering information about the design and assembly by watching YouTube videos, he started working on his dream project.

“It took nearly two years for Ismail to collect all the parts needed. He also readied the prototype of a single-seater helicopter by welding steel pipes and fitted a Maruti 800 engine to power it.”

Ismail wanted to showcase his helicopter to the entire village on Independence Day so he decided to check the prototype of his chopper near his workshop on Tuesday, August 10th in front of his friends.

Everyone saw Ismail starting the engine. Then the rotor blades wings started to move speedily. After this, the tail rotor blade got ripped off from the body and hit the main blades on the top.

Before anyone could do something, a broken blade slashed Ismail’s throat and he collapsed on the ground.

He was rushed to the nearest hospital in Pusad. However, he didn’t survive.

Wild Fires burning in Italy seen in over 500 places

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday, August 12, said the country is facing its ‘greatest ecological catastrophe in decades’ as wildfires continue to devastate southern Europe.

The fires broke out as the country roasted during the most intense and protracted heatwave experienced in around 30 years. Hundreds of wildfires broke out across the country, stretching Greece’s firefighting capabilities to the limit and leading the government to appeal for help from abroad. Hundreds of firefighters, along with planes, helicopters and vehicles, arrived from 24 European and Middle Eastern countries to assist.

“We managed to save lives, but we lost forests and property,” Mitsotakis said, describing the wildfires as “the greatest ecological catastrophe of the last few decades.”

Mitsotakis, speaking during a news conference in Athens, his first since the fires broke out, said authorities had faced around 100 active blazes each day. By Thursday, the situation was much improved, with most large wildfires on the wane.

But the prime minister warned the danger of more blazes was still present.

“We are in the middle of August and it’s clear we will have difficult days ahead of us” until the main season during which fires break out is over.

“The climate crisis — I’d like to use this term, and not climate change — the climate crisis is here,” he said, adding he was ready to make the “bold changes” needed to tackle the changing climate.

“This is a common crisis for all of us,” he said, noting that climate change is a global issue.

The largest fire broke out on Greece’s second-largest island of Evia on Aug. 3 and was still smoldering on Thursday, after having destroyed most of the island’s north.

More than 50,900 hectares were damaged in northern Evia, according to mapping from the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

Italian firefighters have been battling 500 wildfires overnight with the searing heat due to continue for several days, caused by the anticyclone dubbed Lucifer.

Taliban: US Marines arrive in Kabul to evacuate foriegn embassies staff

U.S Marines on Friday, August 13 arrived in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, to help evacuate embassy staff as the Taliban continued its offensive sweep through the country..

The battalions are expected to be fully in place by the end of the weekend, and will be capable of supporting the evacuation of several thousand people a day, both U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals.

Afghanistan: US Marines arrive in Kabul to evacuate embassy staff while other countries close embassies as Taliban onslaught continues

In another development, other countries such as Switzerland, Germany, Russia, the UK, France, Netherlands etc have ordered their citizens to leave the country while ordering their Diplomatic staff to return home in fear of the expected advance towards Kabul.

The Taliban captured two of the country’s largest cities in recent days, with the Taliban trying to isolate Kabul before attacking the city in coming weeks, according to Defense Department spokesman, John Kirby.

Afghanistan: US Marines arrive in Kabul to evacuate embassy staff while other countries close embassies as Taliban onslaught continues

In response to the security situation, two battalions of Marines and a battalion of Army soldiers started arriving in the capital city on Friday to assist the State Department, Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing in Washington.

Taliban militants captured Kandahar, the second-most populous city in the country, as well as the third-largest city of Herat. The insurgents have now seized at least half of Afghanistan’s 34 provincial capitals, taking control of roughly two-thirds of the nation and encircling Kabul, where the U.S. Embassy is preparing to evacuate all but its core diplomatic personnel.

Kirby insisted the U.S. military were not surprised by the Taliban advancements, but noted that the Afghan National Army is better trained and better equipped than the Taliban, thanks to decades of U.S. training and billions of dollars worth of American weapons.

In addition to the deployment of three infantry battalions from the Marines to Kabul, a U.S. infantry brigade will be positioned on standby in Kuwait, Kirby said.

Another 1,000-member unit comprising Army and Air Force personnel will deploy to Qatar to help process special immigrant visas for Afghan nationals who assisted U.S. and NATO troops during the war.

Meanwhile, the State Department has instructed employees in Kabul to begin destroying “sensitive material,” including items featuring embassy logos or the American flag.

A State Department spokesperson revealed that providing burn bins to staff for incinerating sensitive documents was “standard operating procedure” for an embassy “drawdown.”

President Joe Biden, in April announced that all U.S. forces in the region would be withdrawn by Sept. 11.

As the Taliban onslaught continues , the Afghan government security forces have crumpled and many civilians have fled their homes amid the Taliban’s surprisingly swift advance toward the nation’s power center.

However the White House on Friday morning said Biden stands by his decision to end the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after nearly two decades of fighting in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“The President is firmly focused on how we can continue to execute an orderly drawdown and protect our men and women serving in Afghanistan,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

“You heard him earlier this week: he does not regret his decision,” Psaki said.

Barcelona still owe Lionel Messi £33m in loyalty bonuses’ despite the Argentine switching to Paris Saint-Germain

The free transfer of Lionel Messi from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has since been completed, but it still doesn’t mean that the Spanish side have been relieved of its financial obligations to the Argentine.

Barcelona must pay their former captain a €39 million loyalty bonus, according to El Mundo, as reported by Colin Millar, as disclosed in the leak of Messi’s contract with the club last January. He played with Barcelona for 17 years, scoring over 700 goals and collecting numerous trophies. He became a Blaugrana legend and a footballing icon during that time.

Messi’s former deal at Barcelona, worth a whopping £492m, included a loyalty bonus for the star man worth £66m. He received half of that figure in February, with the remaining £33m due this summer.

This latest development further adds to Barca’s financial woes, with president Joan Laporta ruing the ‘criminal’ acts of his predecessor, Josep Bartomeu, in allowing the club’s finances to run out of control.

‘The base of everything is the previous administration’s disastrous management which we inherited,’ he said in explaining Messi’s departure last week.

‘Some decisions might even have been criminal. I’m not talking about signings. Some are hard to understand. They must have been under pressure but it led to this situation now.’

Shocking! Woman took Uber to her grandma’s house to slashed her throat

A woman has been arrested after she slit the throats of her grandma and her grandma’s partner.

Harlee Swols, 22, left an Uber driver waiting outside her grandmother’s flat in Enfield, Connecticut, while she went inside to stab 72-year-old Maryrose Riach and James Samuel Bell, 63, multiple times.

Woman took Uber to her grandma

The brutal attack happened at about 6.30pm. According to the police’s arrest report, a neighbour called officers after hearing a shout for help.

Following Swols’ arrest, she told police that “things got out of hand”.

She told police that she’d been invited to the flat by her grandma in order to pick up some belongings.

Swols’ presence in her grandmother’s house was in violation of a protective order following a domestic incident between her and Bell last month.

In the attack on Sunday evening, her grandmother suffered 22 “sharp force injuries” while Bell, her grandmother’s boyfriend, received 30 stab wounds. Both of them had had their throats cut, according to the pathologist.

When police arrived at the flat, they found Riach on her porch “face down in a pool of blood”.

They kicked in the door, where they found Swols in the kitchen, “soaking wet with water and a blood-like substance”.

Woman took Uber to her grandma

Bell was found “face down, on his knees, near the bottom corner of the bed with a large laceration from one side of his neck to the other and across the area of the artery”. He was pronounced dead at the scene while his partner was declared dead at a hospital.

“The accused had blood all over her clothes and was showing no emotion,” the police statement said.

Woman took Uber to her grandma

Swols had hired the Uber to pick her up from a Staples shop where she worked. She had planned to make three stops on the trip, with the visit to the flat the first of them.

The Uber driver told police he was waiting for her to return to the car when he heard glass smashing and a scream for help.

Swols told officers she didn’t remember how the situation had escalated out of control but claims she got hold of the knife after her grandma’s partner, Bell, lunged at her with it.

When asked what happened next, she told police: “Not good things, clearly.”

Donald Trump blasts Joe Biden over Taliban’s current chaos

Former US President, Donald Trump has criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, claiming the process would be ‘much more successful’ if he was still in charge.

On Thursday, August 12, the Taliban gained control of 11 provincial capital cities and military experts believe Kabul, the country’s capital which houses the government and also embassies and airports will fall to Taliban in the next one month.

The Taliban has now gained control of roughly two-thirds of the country.

Afghanistan withdrawal would have been more successful under me - Donald Trump blasts Joe Biden over Taliban debacle

The rise and onslaught of the Taliban comes after Biden went ahead with his promise to remove all American troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of war with the Taliban following the 9/11 attacks on the US Homeland.

Former U.S president, Trump slammed Biden saying the troop pull out of Afghanistan under his watch would have been a ‘conditions-based withdrawal’, according to the Washington Examiner.

Trump struck a deal with the Taliban for full withdrawal by May 1.

According to the billionaire businessman he ‘personally had discussions with top Taliban leaders whereby they understood what they were doing now would not be acceptable’.

‘It would have been a much different and much more successful withdrawal, and the Taliban understood that better than anyone,’ Trump said.

‘It would have been a much different and much more successful withdrawal,’ former President Donald Trump said.

The Afghan government and military are unsure they can withstand the onslaught from the Taliban, with some saying defeat is imminent, according to the Washington Post. The government has even offered the Taliban a 50/50 stake in the government if they stop the attacks but the Taliban seem to be intent on militarily taking over the whole country.

Trump is not the only former president to criticize Biden’s moves. Former President George W Bush said he would not have made the decision to pull the troops, saying last month that the ‘consequences are going to be unbelievably bad’.

‘I’m afraid Afghan women and girls are going to suffer unspeakable harm’ after the troops complete their departure from Afghanistan on August 31, Bush said.

‘It’s unbelievable how that society changed from the brutality of the Taliban.’

“Identification Number (VIN) of vehicles are not registered, Nigeria is the hub of stolen cars” – Ahmed Zainab Says

The Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has said that majority of vehicles imported into Nigeria were stolen.

The Minister said this while delivering a keynote address at the zonal sensitisation seminar on the National Vehicle Registry (VREG) policy in Abuja on Thursday, August 12.

Tribune quotes the Minister as saying

”The National Bureau of Statistics confirmed that between 2015 and 2019, Nigeria imported an average of 300,000 vehicles with an average of 48 per cent increase in import annually, while an additional 45 per cent of vehicles are smuggled into the country annually, thus evading duty payment of which 40 per cent of these vehicles are stolen.

A case study also revealed that between October 2018 to September 2019 the country recorded over N1.8 trillion value of used vehicle importation.

It was further revealed that Nigeria was the hub of stolen vehicles as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of vehicles in the country were usually unregistered. Consequently, vehicles within the shores of Nigeria cannot be traced.”

NEPA staff gets 6-month imprisonment for unlawful disconnection

A staffer of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Mr James Olayemi has been handed a six months jail sentence for unlawful disconnection of electricity supply to the premises of the company’s customer, Dennis Osanwuta.

Chief Magistrate Tanko Muhammed delivered the judgement on Thursday August 12, and also ordered immediate reconnection of electricity supply to Osanwuta’s premises.

The Magistrate who held that Olayemi was convicted and sentenced accordingly for violating various sections of the extant laws on electricity services, however, absolved the AEDC Regional Manager, Lameed Obadaki, the second defendant, of any complicity on the two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and unlawful disconnection.

According to Muhammed, the disconnection offence was punishable under Section 94 and Section 5 of Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act, 2005 which provides that electricity consumers must be given maximum of 10 days for payment of electricity bills.

Obadaki was discharged and acquitted by the Judge who said evidence presented in the case showed there was no link between him and the criminal activities of the first defendant.

Olayemi was however given an option of a N50,000 fine. The Magistrate said;

“The EPSR also provides for a three-month written notice disconnection to a customer before AEDC can effect an impending disconnection.

“In view of evidence before me, the complainant has not been given such opportunity; therefore, the first defendant is guilty as charged.

“I hereby sentence you to six months imprisonment, with an option of fine of N50,000.”

Toddler shots Mum dead whilst on Zoom call with her colleagues

A mum was on a Zoom call when she was shot dead by her child who had picked up a loaded gun.

Shamaya Lynn, 21, from Florida, was taking part in the conference call on Wednesday, August 11, when the other participants heard a huge bang and the mum fell backwards.

Those on the Zoom call then saw a toddler in the background who had picked a gun that had been left “unsecured” in the home, said Altamonte Springs Police.

When Lynn failed to get back onto the call, one of her colleagues taking part in the call called emergency services and the mum’s body was found with a shot to the head.

Mum shot dead by her toddler as colleagues watched on Zoom call

“Investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment,” a police statement reportedly said.

Florida TV channel WESH reported that Lynn was the mother of the child and the gun belonged to the dad.

Officer Roberto Ruiz, Jr warned in a TV clip: “To anyone and everyone tuning into this story if you own a firearm please keep it locked and secured.

“Incidents like this can be avoided.”

The couple also have another child and both are in the care of relatives, said WESH.

Police are continuing to investigate the case and are consulting with the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office over whether the father, the gun owner, should face charges.

Alarming! Taliban captures Kandahar, country’s second largest city as they advance

The Taliban has seized Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city,  as the militant group continues its rapid advancement toward the capital Kabul, following the withdrawal of American forces, which began in May and is scheduled to be completed by late August.

Kandahar, which lies in the south of the country, has been besieged by the Taliban for weeks, with many observers considering its fall as the beginning of the end for the country’s government.

In a statement Friday, August 13, the Taliban said they had taken control of the governor’s office, police headquarters, as well as other key operational centers throughout the city.

“Hundreds of weapons, vehicles and ammunition were seized,” the Taliban statement said.

Afghan Member of Parliament Gul Ahmad Kamin said he and many others had made their way to a military base close to the city’s international airport and were awaiting a flight out.

“Many (government) soldiers surrendered and the rest fled,” Kamin said.

Kandahar lies on the junction of three major highways.

Afghanistan: Taliban captures Kandahar, country

It is of particular strategic importance and its seizure marks the most significant gain yet for the Taliban, which has now taken control of at least 14 of the country’s 34 provincial capitals.

With the capture of Ghazni, and now Kandahar, the Taliban is now in control of key locations both to the north and south of Kabul.

In response to the Taliban’s sweeping advance, the US and UK  announced on Thursday night they will be sending 3600 troops to the the country to assist with a “reduction of civilian personnel at the embassy in Kabul” and to “facilitate the processing of” Special Immigrant Visas for Afghan nationals who assisted Americans and the British during their time inside Afghanistan.

The war against the Taliban started in 2001 after Al Qaeda carried out the 9/11 bombings in New York.

Barcelona fans abandons football tickets after Lionel Messi’s move to PSG

After Lionel Messi’s sensational free transfer to PSG last week, Barcelona fans are so disinterested in the new campaign that only 15,820 fans applied for tickets for Sunday’s first home game of the LaLiga season against Real Sociedad, which is about half of the 30,000 seats made available.

The low ticket sales are shocking considering this will be fans’ first chance to return to the Nou Camp in 17 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barca’s last competitive game in front of fans was also against Real Sociedad, on March 7, 2020, when Messi scored a late penalty in a 1-0 win.

On Thursday August 12, striking images splashed on social media showing Messi’s picture being removed from the front of the Nou Camp.

With the low ticket sales it appears many fans are not yet ready for the new era without the club’s all-time top scorer and most decorated player.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, only 15.820 of the club’s 83,500 season ticket holders applied for a ticket for the game against Real Sociedad, meaning the club will not have to hold a ballot to determine who gets a ticket as they first thought.

Diego Costa, ex. Chelsea Player, ‘verbally agrees one-year deal with Atletico Mineiro’ after leaving Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa has verbally agreed to a one-year deal worth $3million (£2.16m) with Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, according to reports.

The deal would see the former Spain International return to football for the first time since he abruptly left Atletico Madrid last December.

The £2.16m deal is significantly less than he originally wanted but could be boosted by bonuses linked to advancement in domestic and continental competitions, according to Goal.

The striker is expected to sign the contract after undergoing a medical in Belo Horizonte in the coming days.

Costa ordered Atletico Madrid bosses to tear up his contract in December, citing personal reasons for his sudden exit despite six months remaining at his contract.

The 32-year-old had made it clear he had no intention of signing a contract extension with the Spanish side and had been excused from training.

Costa rejoined Atletico Madrid in 2018 from Chelsea and managed 19 goals in 81 games in his latest spell. He left with an overall record of 83 goals in 215 appearances for the Spanish side, winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and Europa League.

Mario Balotelli cleared of 2017 Rape charges in France

Mario Balotelli has been cleared of a rape allegation after a  girl who was 16 at the time, accused the Italian footballer of the offence in France .

The incident allegedly occurred in July 2017, when the former Manchester City and Liverpool star was playing for French side Nice.

The 31-year-old said that the pair had met when she was on holiday and they had consensual sex, after which she contacted him asking for €100,000 (£84,930).

Balotelli reported the attempted extortion attempt to the police, three weeks before his accuser and her lawyer contacted authorities.

However, Italian police in Balotelli’s hometown of Brescia have closed the case, deeming that any accusation levelled at the footballer was ‘unfounded’.

‘Balotelli is satisfied, as this was an unacceptable and insulting accusation,’ the Italian’s lawyer said.

‘It’s a pity for the girl, who proved herself to be an instrument in the hands of an adult without scruples.’

A judge ruled that witness evidence and telephone conversation recordings with Balotelli proved a ‘machination’ to extort money.

Nigerian Govt. approves N200 for cars, N500 for trucks for tollgates on all Federal Roads

The Federal government has approved a new policy for tollgates on Federal roads across the country.

The approval was granted during the weekly Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, today August 11.

A statement released by Tolu Ogunlesi, the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, quoted the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, as saying that the tollgate policy was developed after extensive consultations with various stakeholders within and outside the government, including transport unions like National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers’ Association Of Nigeria, amongst others.

He listed the recommended tolling fees in the approved policy and regulations to include “Cars: N200; SUVs: N300; Private Buses: N300; Commercial Buses: N150; Luxury Buses and Trucks: N500”.

According to the statement, fees at existing tolled roads (Lagos and Abuja Airport Toll Plazas, and the Lekki and Ikoyi Toll Plazas) were taken into consideration in reaching the new recommended pricing.

The statement listed 10 highlights of the new Federal Tolling Policy as follows:

“It will be an Open Tolling system (just like the one that used to be in existence in the country), instead of a Closed Tolling system. (A Closed Tolling system means that you pay per distance traveled (‘distance-dependent’), while Open Tolling means you pay a fixed/flat rate that is not dependent on distance traveled).

Only dual carriageways owned by the Federal Government will be eligible for tolling by the Federal Government. (Of the 35,000km of Federal Roads in existence in the country, only 5,050km are dual carriageway). Federal carriageways that are single, i.e. undivided highways will not be tolled. The only exceptions here will be some bridges, which are listed in the Policy.

Toll Revenues will be used to maintain the roads and also to repay investors who have invested in building or completing a road under the Highway Development Management Initiative.

Electronic Toll Collection and Management systems will be prioritized over Cash systems.

The following will be exempted from Tolling: Bicycles, Tricycles, Motorcycles, Diplomatic vehicles, Military and Paramilitary vehicles.

The Tolling Policy is a broad National framework that will serve as a guide for States and Local Governments who seek to implement their own Tolling Policies. (As noted earlier, only about 16% of the total road network in Nigeria belongs to the Federal Government. States own/control roughly the same amount as the FG, while the rest – amounting to two-thirds are last-mile roads belonging to and under the responsibility of Local Governments).

People who live around Toll Plaza Areas will benefit from what is called ‘Frequent User’ discounts, in line with global best practice.

Recommended Tolling Fees in the Approved Policy and Regulations are as follows:

Cars: N200; SUVs: N300; Private Buses: N300; Commercial Buses: N150; Luxury Buses and Trucks: N500

According to the Honorable Minister, the Federal Highways Act vests the power to toll (Federal Roads) in the Minister responsible for roads, but implementation of any tolling policy/regime involves many processes and multiple agencies, and therefore requires multi-stakeholder collaboration.

According to the Minister, it is important to stress that even with this policy now approved, tolling is not going to start immediately. He very clearly said that Tolling will not start “until the roads are motorable.” This policy is a necessary condition for the implementation of Tolling, and it is now for people to start getting familiar with it and for relevant stakeholders to start using it as a basis for their financial modeling and investment analysis, ahead of the eventual rollout of Toll Plazas.”

Lee Jae-Yong, Jailed Samsung Vice Chairman, released from Prison on Parole

Samsung Electronics’ Vice Chairman, Lee Jae-yong, was paroled on Friday, August 13, after serving 18 months of a 30-month prison term for corruption.

The 53-year-old executive, who is Samsung’s de facto leader, walked out of the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, a city just south of Seoul, on Friday morning.

Lee Jae-yong — the 202nd richest person in the world according to Forbes, with a net worth of $11.4 billion — was serving a two-and-a-half year prison sentence for bribery, embezzlement and other offences in connection with the corruption scandal that brought down ex-South Korean president Park Geun-hye.

But calls for his early release from both politicians and business leaders grew in recent months over what they claimed was a possible leadership vacuum at the South’s biggest conglomerate.

The justice ministry announced Monday, August 9, he had been paroled with over 800 others, citing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the economy.

As he walked out of the Detention Centre, Lee, wearing a mask, told reporters: “I am very sorry for making people worried. I know there are concerns, criticism, worries and big expectations for me. I will do my best.”

He then got into a vehicle and departed.

Numerous people gathered outside the prison, some in support of his release and others opposing it. Those who opposed questioned why convicted business titans often receive leniency in South Korea.

Lee was put on a list of 810 prisoners to be released on the occasion of Liberation Day, which falls on Sunday and marks the end of Japanese colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula in 1945. The nine-member Parole Review Committee, chaired by Vice Justice Minister Kang Sung-kook, decided to release Lee in a meeting on Monday, hoping that his presence in the executive suite will provide a boost to South Korea’s economy.

“In particular, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was included on the list as we considered the national economy and global economic circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” a justice ministry statement says. “We also considered various factors, including public sentiment and his attitude in prison.”

The presidential Blue House asked people to understand Lee’s release as a choice made in the country’s interest.

“Many people wanted parole as they have expectations for [his] role in the fields of semiconductors and vaccines amid the serious crisis,” said Park Su-hyun, spokesperson for President Moon Jae-in, in a briefing on Friday after Lee left detention.

“Yahoo Yahoo Boy” who poses as Lady to Dupe Victims arrested in Pakistan

A Nigerian man accused of being a member of an international syndicate committing online fraud, has been arrested in Lahore, Pakistan.

According to the Additional Director FIA Cyber Crimes Wing, Shahid Hassan, the Nigerian national identified as Darlington Chimo Osuji, was arrested for allegedly defrauding people by posing as a female online.

“The accused person is involved in financial fraud by impersonating himself as a lady who would send parcel of dollars to his targets” he said

According to Hassan, after luring the victims through various tricks, the accused would demand a handsome amount and would later escape with all the money collected from the victims.

“Following an enquiry No. 360/2020, we have arrested him and an FIR 76/2021 has been registered.” said Hassan.

The senior FIA official further told Bol News that earlier he had arrested three Nigerian nationals for their involvement in online frauds in Islamabad.

The US and UK jointly agreed to send 3600 troops to Afghanistan as Taliban advances towards capital Kabul

The US and UK have announced plans to send 3600 troops as reinforcements to Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan to help evacuate their diplomats, soldiers and citizens as well as thousands of Afghans who have worked with them, as the Taliban advance towards the capital.

UK and US to send 3600 troops to Afghanistan as Taliban advances towards capital Kabul

On Thursday night, August 12, the Pentagon announced it would send three battalions, about 3,000 soldiers, to Kabul’s international airport within 24 to 48 hours of the announcement .

UK and US to send 3600 troops to Afghanistan as Taliban advances towards capital Kabul

The defence department spokesman, John Kirby, said the reinforcements would help the “safe and orderly reduction” of numbers of US nationals and Afghans who worked with the Americans and consequently had been granted special immigrant visas.

“We have been watching very closely with concern the security situation on the ground – and far better to be prudent about it and be responsible and watching the trends to make the best decisions you can for safety and security of our people than to wait until it’s too late,” Kirby said.

Also, the UK said it would send 600 troops, as defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said Britain was relocating its embassy from the outskirts of the secure Green Zone to a potentially safer location closer to the centre of the capital.

UK expects to evacuate up to 4,000 Afghans as well as over 200 UK diplomats.

All these comes amid fears over the Taliban’s ravaging advance across the country.

Also, Germany put out a tweet on Thursday urging all its citizens to leave the country as fast as possible on commercial flights.

The frantic military moves comes as Taliban fighters captured Afghanistan’s second and third largest cities on Thursday. The seizure of Kandahar and Herat marked the biggest prizes yet for the Taliban, who have now taken 12 of the country’s 34 provincial capitals.

The group has now established a bridgehead within 95 miles (150km) of Kabul and its rapid advances leave the capital isolated from the rest of the country.

At the same time as deploying three battalions to Kabul, the Pentagon is sending a thousand troops to Qatar to help the processing of interpreters and other former Afghan staff who have been granted special visas. Up to 4,000 additional US troops will be put on standby in Kuwait.

The state department spokesman, Ned Price, said that the US embassy would be reduced to a core staff. Some of the embassy’s functions will be relocated to the airport. But Price insisted: “What this is not – this is not abandonment. This is not an evacuation. This is not the wholesale withdrawal.”

The sudden, urgent deployments of troops to help evacuate their own people, is a stark message  to the Afghans that foreign governments believe Kabul’s fall to the Taliban is imminent.

The Taliban want to declare Afghanistan an Islamic emirate but the Afghan government have kicked against such plans. Following the Taliban advance, the Afghan Government has offered a power sharing formula to the Taliban in exchange for a ceasefire, but it’s very hard to see the Taliban accepting such offer when they see that Kabul is within their sights.

In the face of the Taliban advance the British government has urges the group to acknowledge that if they want international recognition they will need to win the support of the Afghan population, something they know a purely military assault by the Taliban will not achieve.

The US joined by the UK and other NATO Forces launched a war against Afghanistan in 2001 following the World Trade center bombing by Al Qaeda.
