Nigerian Govt Appeals against Nnamdi Kanu’s release as it is a flight risk’- FG tells Supreme Court

The Federal Government has claimed that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a flight risk.

The FG made this known in legal documents as it filed seven grounds of appeal against the Court of Appeal judgment which discharged Kanu on October 13.

It asked the Supreme Court to set aside the judgment and restore the charge against the respondent to be tried at the trial court.

On Thursday, October 20, the federal government, in a motion on notice in support of the appeal, says it seeks a stay of execution of the judgment of the court presided over by Justice Jummai Sankey, pending the hearing and final determination of its appeal, noting that the IPOB leader posed a flight risk.

The notice of appeal dated October 18 was signed by the Director, Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, Assistant Chief State Counsel, D. Kaswe and A. Aluko and Senior State Counsel, G. Nweze, Department of Public Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice.

The appellant said that the appellate court wrongly interpreted the law when it held that the trial court had no jurisdiction to try Kanu because of “the extraordinary rendition of the respondent.”

It stated, “There was no evidence led by the respondent before the court of the first instance and indeed before the court below to show how he was allegedly abducted and rendered to Nigeria as required by Section 139 of the Evidence Act, 2011 since he alleged that he was abducted without following due process of law.”

The appellant also contended that the court erred when it held that the executive arm must not be allowed to benefit from the abduction of the respondent “when in fact and by its judgment, the respondent was allowed to benefit from his illegality of disobeying the orders of the court when he jumped bail and was rewarded with a discharge from the charges pending against him at the trial court thereby occasioning a miscarriage of justice against the state and the victims of the crimes perpetrated by the respondent.”

The government claimed that the appeal court was wrong by saying that how Kanu was brought back to the country can  indeed weaken the criminal charges of treason, treasonable felony and terrorism brought against him.

The FG added that the appeal court made that decision without taking into account the fact that the nature of the “entry’’ of the respondent is not relevant in the determination of the charges against him.

The appellant further stated that the appeal court justices failed to be bound by established judicial precedent on the mode of “entry” of a defendant charged with the commission of an offence established by the Supreme Court.

“The court below overlooked the submissions of the appellant with regards to the ACJA, 2015 which takes its taproot from the grundnorm Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to the effect that it is the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 that governs the trial of every Nigerian charged with the commission of a crime, this failure occasioned the miscarriage of justice,’’ the appeal notice read.

The FG further argued that the court below erred in law when it discharged the respondent of the offences mentioned in counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 bordering on terrorism offences contained in the amended charge dated January 14, 2022, and retained by the trial court for want of jurisdiction.

“If the learned Justices of the Court of Appeal had taken into consideration the act of illegality of the respondent in jumping bail and the corresponding duty of the appellant to ensure his presence in court, the decision of the court would have been different,’’ the appeal read.

Gunmen killed 7 persons in Apostle Suleman’s entourage (Graphic Videos)

Johnson Suleman, the general overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries International, has spoken on the recent attack on a convoy in which he was travelling.

On Friday, gunmen had opened fire on his convoy in Auchi area of Edo state.

Several persons — including three police officers — were confirmed dead after the attack.

Speaking on the incident in a video posted on his Facebook page on Friday night, Suleman said seven people died in the attack.

Describing the incident as an “assassination attempt”, he expressed sadness over those that were killed, but said the gunmen will “reap the seed they sow”.

He also also alluded to “certain things” happening since 2017, which appeared to be a reference to the various sex scandals involving him.

“Since 2017, there are certain things that have been happening that I have been quiet about. Even if you’re the most careless person on earth, you will not give yourself to so much scandals. There are things people don’t know, even though one or two people, along the line, took advantage of that to just come out and say one or two things,” he said.

“But the reason I’m coming out to speak now is because they’ve done all that and discovered that I’m still moving on. They’ve decided to make attempt on my life.

“I just escaped an assassination attempt where seven people were killed. My car was attacked — [they] opened fire on my car, and kept spraying it with bullets. My wife and my kids were there. The escort car, with some police, they killed the policeman, they killed the other people in the other escort car and the buses with us. Seven people — we were all moving in a convoy — were killed.

“People who did this are expecting me to come out, mention their names, so that they will come out and deny. I won’t do that. But the truth of the matter is this: you can’t kill me. My life is in the hand of God. I am a man of God.

“And those who are among those that are attacking me, you are building on what you don’t understand. You may have joined the fora because you want to chase clout, but you don’t know where the fight started from. There are things you don’t understand; you don’t have an idea of the beginning of what happened in 2017 — the people who are behind it. You may come and you are doing your own thing, but it is beyond what you are thinking.

“I am alive. For those who have been calling and all that, I am well; the family is fine. I feel bad for the lives that have been taken. We are mourning but Jesus is Lord. And for all those who they killed, may their souls rest in peace.

“And for the young men who open fire and keep wasting people, I won’t take your life. But the seed that you sow, you will reap it. I want Nigerians to know that a coordinated lie swallows an uncoordinated truth. With time, the truth will come out.”

Chinese man bags 5 years jail for illegal mining in Kwara

Justice Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, convicted and sentenced a 29-year-old Chinese national, Gang Deng, to five years imprisonment for offences bordering on illegal mining and possession of minerals without lawful authority.

Gang was arrested  along Tsaragi Road in Share, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State on Friday, September 9, 2022 by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC.

He was found to be in possession of 25 tons of minerals suspected to be Lepidolite, a raw material used for the production of batteries for vehicles, cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices.

It would be recalled that operatives of the EFCC, in collaboration with the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development on August 30, 2022, arrested 13 suspected illegal miners operating in Kakafu village in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Mining without license is a criminal offence under the law. It is an act of economic sabotage, punishable under Section 1 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, which stipulates life imprisonment for offenders.

The Chinese National who is the Managing Director of Sinuo Xinyang Nigeria Ltd, confessed to the crime.

Consequently, the Ilorin Command of the EFCC arraigned Gang alongside his company Sinuo Xinyang Nigeria Ltd on one count amended charge before Justice Sani. When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded guilty, but entered “not guilty plea” for his company.

The court, thereafter adjourned till November 17, 2022 for hearing in the case of the convict’s company, Sinuo Xinyang Nigeria Ltd.

Nigerian Govt. appeals judgement freeing Nnamdi Kanu

A Court of Appeal judgement which freed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu has been appealed by the federal government at the Supreme Court.

In the appeal filed yesterday October 19, before the apex court by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the federal government asked the Supreme Court to stay the execution of the October 13 Court of Appeal judgment that freed the leader of the separatist group.

The federal government in the seven-ground notice of appeal, faulted the lower court’s decision and also asked that it be set aside.

The federal government claimed that the Court of Appeal erred when it faulted the manner Kanu was brought back to face trial after he jumped bail and fled the country.

It also claimed that the Court of Appeal erred when it struck out the pending charge against Kanu on the ground that the trial court no longer possessed the requisite jurisdiction to continue the trial because of the manner Kanu was returned to the country upon allegedly jumping bail.

A date for the hearing of the motion for the stay of execution is being awaited.

Nigeria is now left with 24,000 doctors – NMA

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has said that only 24, 000 actively licensed physicians are remaining in the country following a recent brain drain.

NMA President, Ojinmah Uche who disclosed this during a policy dialogue on Nigeria’s health sector brain drain and its implications for sustainable child and family health service delivery, said the 24,000 actively licensed physicians are taking care of Nigeria’s over 200 million population.

Speaking at the event organised by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Partnership for Advancing Child and Family Health at Scale project of the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), Ojinmah noted that based on the World Health Organisation established minimum threshold, a country needs a mix of 23 doctors, nurses and midwives per 10,000 population to deliver essential maternal and child health services.

He added;

“Only one doctor is incredibly available to treat 30,000 patients in some states in the South; while states in the North are as worse as one doctor to 45,000 patients. In some rural areas, patients have to travel more than 30 kilometers from their abodes to get medical attention where available thus Nigeria making access to healthcare a rarity.”

Ojinmah further blamed the brain drain on poor funding of the health sector, stressful medical education, non-existent house job slots, difficulty in gaining employment, poor remuneration, unnecessary and unhealthy inter-professional rivalry, insecurity, among others.

Microsoft Inc has laid off nearly 1,000 employees worldwide amid fears of recession

Microsoft has laid off nearly 1,000 employees worldwide amid fears of a recession.

The layoffs represent less than half of 1 percent of the company’s 221,000 employees globally, ABC News reports.

According to Business Insider, the job cuts affect everything from Microsoft’s Xbox console gaming division to its cutting-edge Microsoft Strategic Missions and Technology organization.

Some former employees have now taken to Twitter to confirm the unfortunate news, with even KC Lemson, a longtime employee and product manager in the office of the Chief Technology Officer sharing that she was affected.

The news comes as shares of the tech company fell nearly 30 percent over the past year amid persistent inflation and decreased demand for products as people return to their offices.

In a statement, Microsoft executives said: ‘Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly.

‘We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead.’

With the announcement, Microsoft is just the latest company to cut its workforce amid rampant inflation.

Microsoft executives previously announced in July that it was laying off less than 1 percent of its workforce and significantly slow hiring, as its revenue fell short of investor expectations.

The company recorded only $51.9 billion in revenue during the second quarter of the year but was expected to rake in $52.4 billion.

It had previously recorded blockbuster growth during the COVID pandemic when consumers and businesses turned to its products as they shifted to a work-from-home model.

Do you know that some Nigerian Politicians went to Rome to offer ‘special prayers’ for Nigeria?

A delegation of 121 Nigerians has departed for Rome, Italy, to offer intercessory prayers for the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Yakubu Pam, the executive secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), said the trip was special and exceptional.

He added that the trip was bilateral, and not the regular visitation by pilgrims to holy sites.

The delegation includes the secretary to the government of the federation, some governors and deputy governors, traditional rulers and heads of spiritual organisations.

“We are going as the image of Nigeria, we are going to meet with other top functionaries of countries and the host country,” Pam said.

“We will pray and discuss national issues and other issues that bother us and the way forward.”

He said the pilgrims’ top concerns were Nigeria’s unity, peaceful conduct of the 2023 elections, and an end to the security challenges.

“We will pray for unity of the country, we will pray for the vulnerable and less privilege. We will pray for the economic situation of Nigeria to be improved and we will be praying for the leaders of the country for God to touch them and give them the enablement to rule better,” he said.

Ignatius Kaigama, archbishop of Abuja archdiocese, said he was optimistic that the pilgrims would return totally revitalised and transformed to have a beneficial impact on their families and the country.

“We are going to pray for transformation of ourselves; we will pray for spirit of holiness and for our country to experience transformation,” the cleric said.

“We will be appealing to the tribunal of God, as He has the final say on all issues we encounter as a country. We will experience more peace, understanding, unity and progress.”

Of the 121 pilgrims, according to Pam, 40 were sponsored by the government while others were on self sponsorship.

GoodNews! 2nd Niger Bridge has been completed – Fashola

default

Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works and Housing, has announced the completion of the Second Niger Bridge.

He disclosed this on Wednesday, October 19, in Abuja at the unveiling of President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecard series (2015-2023).

However, he said connecting roads to the bridge are still under construction.

Fashola said: “I can confirm that the second Niger bridge itself is finished. People can walk through the bridge now unimpeded. What remains is the four-kilometer interchange road at the Asaba end and 2km out of a 7km link road at the Onitsha end.

“Right now, our dredger is in place, we have to rebuild the road by reclaiming sand, the recent surge of flood has slowed us down. On the Onitsha side, there is a 7kilometer road that links the bridge and the Onitsha-Owerri interchange.”

Fashola added: “The first thing we did when we came into power was we expanded our budget on road infrastructure, sought alternative sources of funding through SUKUK, Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme.”

At least 13 people have now died after a Russian fighter-bomber plane crashed into an apartment block in the southern Russian town of Yeysk on Monday night, October 17.

Footage shared on social media showed flames pouring from two apartment blocks after the jet hit it.

A local correspondent in Yeysk told Russia’s state-run TV channel Rossiya 24 that two pilots of the Su-34 jet, on a training flight, ejected before it hit the building.

The officials said 68 were rescued from the blaze in the nine-storey block.

Nineteen injured people are being treated following the crash.

“According to a report from the pilots, who jettisoned from the plane, the reason for the crash was a fire in one of the engines during take off,” the Russian defence ministry said.

“At the point where the Su-34 came down, in the courtyard of a residential block, the plane’s fuel supply caught fire,” it added.

The port town of Yeysk lies near the eastern Ukrainian war zone, across the Sea of Azov from the devastated city of Mariupol.

It has been used as a major training ground for Russia’s naval aviation.

Just IN: Uganda announces lockdown as Ebola hits

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has declared an immediate three-week lockdown in two high-risk districts as the country battles a rise in Ebola infections.

President Yoweri introduced the lockdown for the two districts worst affected by the killer virus, where dozens have already been infected and nearly 20 patients have died.

There is now an overnight curfew, while bars, restaurants, entertainment venues, and places of worship have been closed in Mubende and Kassanda.

Curfews will also be imposed. Places of worship, bars, gyms, saunas and other entertainment venues will close but schools will remain open, he added.

“Given the gravity of the problem and to prevent further spread and protect lives and livelihoods, the government is taking extra measures that require action from all of us,” Museveni said.

The Ugandan health ministry will also increase contact tracing and assistance to local health facilities.

Speaking at a media briefing earlier this month, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the vaccines used successfully to curb recent Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are not effective against the type of Ebola virus now circulating in Uganda.

“However, several vaccines are in various stages of development against this virus, two of which could begin clinical trials in Uganda in the coming weeks, pending regulatory and ethics approvals from the Ugandan government,” said Tedros.

So far, Uganda has experienced four Ebola outbreaks. The deadliest left more than 200 people dead in 2000.

Peter Obi meets Gumi

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has revealed what he discussed with the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who visited him at his residence in Kaduna.

WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that Obi alongside his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed visited the Islamic cleric in his official residence on Monday.

The visit was before the politicians proceeded to the venue of the event organised for presidential candidates by the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum and other northern groups.

Speaking with Daily Trust , Gumi said he asked Obi few questions even though they were meeting for the first time in their lives.

“He (Obi) came on a courtesy call even though I was meeting him for the first time face-to-face, and so I appreciated his visit.

“I asked him very essential questions, but I told him he didn’t have to give me straight answers right away since I knew he was on his way to Arewa House where he would explain it better to the larger society to understand.

“I asked him about his stand on restructuring because Nigeria has been going through a restructuring from 1960 to date and how he could empower an unskilled nation.

“I also asked him how he could pacify agitations from the South East, North Central, South West, and North East. Again, I told him there are foreign interests in this country that are part of the polarisation of our politics. So how is he going to tackle it?

“He also agreed with me that truly there is foreign interest in this country, and then I wished him well,” he said.

Gumi also advised all the presidential candidates to make their campaigns issue-based.

The Kaduna-based cleric cautioned them against utterances that could further polarise the country.

Biafra: 24 persons arrested over link with Nnamdi Kanu missing – lawyer cries out

A human rights lawyer, Mr. Nnaemeka Ejiofor, has raised the alarm over what he termed as enforced disappearance of 24 persons that were arrested by security agents, following their alleged link with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

Ejiofor, who briefed newsmen in Abuja over the issue, bemoaned the fact that some of the missing persons he said were arrested from their homes since August, 2021, have not been seen, neither have they been charged before any court.

“The offences of these men and women are that they are members of the IPOB or close associates of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“None of these victims of enforced disappearance have received anything like trial since their arrests.

“None of them has ever been allowed to contact their lawyers or family and all judicial efforts made to see them or get them released have been illegally thwarted and frustrated.

“These 24 identified victims are just a fraction of the number of persons who were arrested and disappeared as so many very gory and scary reports of extra judicial execution, murder in the cruelest manner such as by suffocation, starvation and or summary execution abound”, Ejiofor stated.

According to the senior lawyer, among those that are being detained, included a 20-year old lady, Joy Godwin Udoh, also known as Idara Gold.

He narrated how Miss Udoh who hails from Akwa-Ibom state, was arrested on her birthday by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, at the home of her fiance, for allegedly wearing a dress that was considered the colour of the Biafran flag.

“She went to celebrate her birthday with her fiance when officers of the state security service stormed the house in search of her fiance, Mazi Chuks Egwuatu. She was arrested alongside all the siblings of her fiance.

“While her fiance’s siblings were released after about five days in detention, she was transferred to Abuja office of the SSS on the 16th day of November, 2021.

“Joy Udoh’s offence was that she dressed in a certain coloured dress for her birthday and the SSS concluded that such coloured dress was advertising and influencing for the IPOB.

“Joy, like others before and after her, was transferred to a military holding cell without an order of court and contrary to all known laws in Nigeria”, Ejiofor insisted.

He decried that despite an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the DSS, denied the detained lady access to her lawyers and had since then, failed to produce her in court.

“Till today, we do not know where Joy Godwin Udoh is, neither has any of us, including her family, been able to see or meet or hear from her”.

Ejiofor further listed 11 persons; Barrister Pius Awoke, Fortune Okezie, Chinedu Nwoba, Chinomso Onyeibe, Eze Joseph, David Ogbonnaya, Ajah Joseph, Igwe Johnson, Kenneth Ojima, Wisdom Ezika Nwambana and Uket Godwin, he said were arrested on July 26, 2021, while on their way to Ebonyi State after they appeared in court to witness Kanu’s trial.

“After the case of Kanu on the said date at the Federal High Court, Abuja, they boarded two vehicles back to Ebonyi State only to be intercepted by a Navy Unit stationed at Lokoja, Kogi State.

“They were held down at the checkpoint for over five hours till a team of the SSS came to take them back to Abuja.

“Upon being sued in court to challenge their arrest and detention, they were said to have been transferred to WAWA Military Barracks in Niger State.

“Neither their lawyers nor their families have seen them or spoken to them nor have they been brought before any court for trial”.

Others Ejiofor included in the list of alleged IPOB members that were arrested and are yet to been seen, are; Ikechukwu Henry, Emeka Ngonadi, Kingsley Onovu, Ogbonna David, Emmanuel Onyibe Chinomso, Ogbonna Christian Ndubisi, Eze Ernest Chukwuemeka, Ibeleme Tochukwu, Emmanuel Ike, Rev. Cletus Whole, Chinonso Anyanwu, Kelechi Okeke, Godspower Chilemu and Chukwuma Nwaokike.

“We want the federal government to do the right thing by producing these victims and releasing them to their families with apologies and compensation”, Ejiofor added.

Among those at the media briefing, included wives, children and relatives of some of the detainees.

According to the Magazine, on October 7, 2022, Odogwu launched his cannabis brand BrkFst in collaboration with Jokes Up/Ice Kream in South Beach, Miami.

The magazine wrote “Burna is bringing his addition to the Cannabis Community by naming his brand BrkFst.

Did China opened police station in Nigeria?

The Chinese government has opened police stations in Nigeria and in over 20 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa in its effort to tackle the increasing criminal activities of its citizens abroad.

This was contained in an investigative statement titled, ‘110 Overseas Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild.’

It was widely reported that the police stations are created to bring “down on all kinds of illegal and criminal activities involving overseas Chinese.”

Lesotho and Tanzania are the two other African countries apart from Nigeria that have Chinese police stations.

The report by Safeguard Defender revealed, “Rather than cooperating with local authorities in the full respect of territorial sovereignty, it prefers…to cooperate with (United Front-linked) overseas ‘NGOs’ or ‘civil society associations’ across the five continents, setting up an alternative policing and judicial system within third countries, and directly implicating those organisations in the illegal methods employed to pursue ‘fugitives’.”

It further said that as part of a massive nationwide campaign to combat fraud and telecommunication fraud by Chinese citizens living abroad, Chinese authorities claimed that from April 2021 to July 2022, 230,000 nationals had been, “persuaded to return” to face criminal proceedings in China.

China’s official statements clarified the use of depriving suspects’ children of the right to education back in China and other actions against relatives and family members in a full-on “guilt by association” campaign.

The rights group revealed that China selected nine countries as having serious fraud, telecom fraud and web crimes, and Chinese nationals were no longer allowed to stay in those countries without “good reason.”

“While establishing these operations to hunt down those accused of fraud and telecommunications fraud, China identified nine countries particularly prone to hosting Chinese nationals engaging in such criminal activities, the ‘nine forbidden countries’,” the Safeguard explained.

However, the setting up of overseas police ‘service stations’ was a worldwide phenomenon, with the majority of such being in western democratic nations, with a particular focus on Europe, and not in the ‘nine forbidden countries’.

The group also noted that forsaking any “pretext of due process or the consideration of suspects’ innocence until proven guilty, targeting suspects’ children and relatives in China as ‘guilty by association’ or ‘collateral damage’, and using threats and intimidation to target suspects abroad, is now itself becoming an endemic problem.”

“Whether the targets are dissidents, corrupt officials or low-level criminals, the problem remains the same: The use of irregular methods — often combining carrots with sticks — against the targeted individual or their family members in China undermines any due process and the most basic rights of suspects,” Safeguard Defender further stated.

ALERT! Nigerian Govt. warns its citizens on fake study and job opportunities in Cyprus

The Federal government has warned Nigerians to be wary of fake admissions and unverifiable job opportunities in Cyprus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, titled ‘Travel Advisory For Nigerians Seeking Admission Or Job Opportunities In The Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)’ gave the word of caution in a statement released today October 18.

The ministry explained that many young Nigerians have become stranded in the country after falling prey to agents advertising unverifiable opportunities in the territory.

The statement reads

“The attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria has been drawn to the clandestine activities of unscrupulous elements parading themselves as agents and deceiving unsuspecting young Nigerians into believing that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, provides easy access to “greener pastures” for studies and jobs opportunities.

This has led to an alarming influx of Nigerians into the territory in recent times. The resultant effect, being an unprecedented increase in consular cases of stranded young Nigerians in TRNC.

The general public is advised to be on the alert in order to guard against these so-called agents in Nigeria or elsewhere peddling admissions and the existence of unverifiable job opportunities in the TRNC.”

It is advisable that students and their parents/guardians carry out due diligence checks on any so-called university or tertiary institution before application for admission is made. It is also instructive to be forewarned against deceptive advertising of job opportunities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” the statement read

Ballon d’Or 2022: Benzema and Other newcomers win

As expected, the 2022 Ballon d’Or was a glamorous affair as football icons from across the world gathered Monday night in Paris for the most prestigious individual football awards.

Though there were winners across the different categories, Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema and Barcelona Femeni captain Alexia Putellas were the biggest winners of the night; emerging as the best male and female footballers of 2022.

While it was back-to-back wins for Putellas having also won last year, this is the first-ever Ballon d’Or honour for Benzema.

Putellas, 28, who won the award last year, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the summer and missed Spain’s Euro 2022 campaign.

Before her injury, Putellas was the Champions League top scorer for Barca last season with 11 goals in 10 games. Arsenal striker Beth Mead was second, with Chelsea forward Sam Kerr in third.

Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 appearances during the 2021-2022 season, including finishing with an amazing 15 goals in the Champions League.

Though the trio of Sadio Mane, Robert Lewandowski and Kevin De Bruyne all got to the last phase, they all finished behind Benzema.

Other Winners

Aside from being among the top four finishers, Mane was awarded France Football’s inaugural Socrates Prize, in recognition of his charity work in his native Senegal.

The Bayern Munich forward has built a public hospital and funded schools and families in his home village of Bambali in recent years. He also donated to the Senegalese National Committee to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Socrates Prize identifies the best social initiative by committed champions,” said a statement from France Football magazine, which added the humanitarian award to the 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony. The accolade is named after the late footballer Socrates, who co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement, in opposition to the ruling military government in 1980s Brazil.

Also, Barcelona and Spain midfielder, Gavi, won the Kopa Trophy for the best player of last season aged under 21 at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday.

The 18-year-old succeeds his Barcelona teammate Pedri, who won the prize last year.

Robert Lewandowski received the award for last season’s top goal scorer, renamed the Gerd Muller Trophy, for the second straight year.

The 34-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the close season, scored 57 goals in 56 matches for club and country last term. He was the top-scorer in the Bundesliga with 35 goals.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois emerged as the winner of the 2022 Yashin award, which names the world’s best goalkeeper for the 2021-2022 season.

The Belgian had a phenomenal season; capping it up with an MVP display in the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool.

“Ukraine will win in the end by next summer” – Ukrainian defense intel chief predicts

The head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency predicts “significant victories” for Kyiv by the end of the year and said “it should be over” by next summer.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 but in the last couple of months Ukraine has made advances on the battlefield reclaiming several territories including ones annexed by Russia in a recent referendum.

Russia has since resorted to attacking Ukraine’s civilian and energy facilities in order to weaken the resolve of the Ukranians but the country’s intelligence chief predicts a win for Ukraine in the war.

“Russia’s loss is inevitable. It cannot be stopped, and it will lead to its destruction,” Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov said on Tuesday, October 18.

“We will make significant progress by the end of the year. These will be significant victories. You will see it soon.”

Independence Day in Ukraine

He said that he hoped the victories would include the southern Russian-occupied city of Kherson, where Ukraine has made significant progress in recent weeks.

In remarks distributed by his agency, Budanov said: “At the end of spring it should be over. By the summer everything should be over.”

He said that Ukraine intended to return to its 1991 borders. That would mean recapturing Crimea and the areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions occupied since 2014.

Budanov also said that he does not believe Russia will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

“Theoretically, they can, but it will only accelerate the disintegration of the Russian Federation, and they know and understand this very well. They are not as stupid as we would like them to be,” he said.

Budanov said he believes that those in the Kremlin had now coalesced on a central goal for the war in Ukraine: “Not to lose.”

“Some of them are notional ‘doves,’ others are notional ‘hawks,’” he said. “Both these towers understand that things are very bad, they just have slightly different opinions on how to get out of this situation.”

He added, “Some understand clearly that they should stop and look for some kind of peaceful resolution, others believe that Russia will cease to exist if they do not continue, if they are defeated, so to speak.”

“It is no longer a question of winning — it’s now ‘not to lose,’” he said of his assessment of Kremlin thinking.

With a Ukrainian victory, he said, a “very serious political process will begin, connected with changes in the current Russian Federation.”

Boxing: Deontay Wilder knocks out Robert Helenius (videos)

Forner heavyweight boxing champion, Deontay Wilder celebrated his return to the ring with a stunning signature stoppage of Robert Helenius on Sunday morning, October 16.

Wilder was fighting for the first time since his second successive – and concussive defeat by Tyson Fury more than 12 months ago as he began a comeback journey with hopes of becoming heavyweight world champion again.

Wilder easily dispatched former sparring partner Helenius, landing a short right hand – just Wilder’s third of the fight – while backed up in the corner, leaving the Finn prone on the canvas and in need of medical attention.

Wilder took his time in the opening stages as he looked to shed any ring rust, before exploding with a right hand which was high, wide and not particularly handsome.

Deontay Wilder knocks out opponent

It took just a right hand to dump Helenius on the canvas with just seconds of the round remaining as the fight was immediately waved off.

“It’s amazing to be back in Brooklyn. This arena is like a second home to me,” said Wilder.

“It feels so good to be back; when I came off the plane and set my foot on the ground I felt a great energy. I felt the love and I felt the support and that’s all I needed. I knew it was going to be a great night for me and it was.

“I was trying to keep my distance because Robert has a heart of a champion and I knew what he was capable of. I didn’t take him for granted and I looked him in the eyes and he really wanted it. When they fight Deontay Wilder they come with their A++ game.

“I set him up, I allowed him to reach and when he reached, I tagged him. It was a great fight and who’s next? I’ve been hearing rumours about [Oleksandr] Usyk but I see he’s not here. Most of the times guys say they want me and they come to shows of mine, they knockouts out like that they turn. the corner.

“I’m ready for whoever, whether it’s Andy Ruiz or Usyk, bring it on. Deontay Wilder is back, the excitement in the division is back. There is no heavyweight division without Deontay Wilder, that’s fact!”

Neymar, PSG Start, may face 5-year prison sentence for alleged fraud and corruption charges

Neymar in tears after losing UEFA champions league final (Photos)

PSG and Brazil superstar, Neymar is facing calls for a prison sentence of five years over charges of corruption and fraud.

The 30-year-old is set to appear in court next week on charges relating to his £49.6million (€57.1m) switch from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

Brazilian investment firm DIS believe the now-PSG star’s move from Santos was undervalued, leading them to lose out, having bought 40 percent of the rights to the player for £1.7m (€2m) when he was 17.

The other defendants in the case are both Barcelona and Santos, former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu, Sandro Rosell, Santos Odilio Rodrigues, and Neymar’s parents.

The Catalan giants claimed that at the time, Neymar’s transfer fee was £49.6m (€57.1m), and that the fee was paid to both the player’s family and to Santos.

His parents received £34.8m (€40m) of the fee, with the rest going to the Brazilian club, of which DIS received 40 percent.

However, the investment firm are claiming that Barcelona rejected higher offers. Their lawyer Paulo Nesser said on Thursday: ‘Neymar’s rights have not been sold to the highest bidder.

‘There were clubs that offered up to £52.2m (€60m).’

The DIS are are demanding five-year incarceration for the player, and also requesting a £129.6m (€149m) fine for Bartomeu and Rosell, as well as an additional prison sentence.

However, the Spanish prosecutors who are bringing the case want only a two-year term and £8.7m (€10m) fine for Neymar and five-years for Rosell as well as a £7.3m (€8.4m) fine for Barca.

But Neymar’s family lawyers, Baker McKenzie have issued a statement of their own, which dictates that the transfer broke no FIFA laws and that the alleged crimes are not punishable in the forward’s home country.

They also claimed the Spanish courts ‘lack jurisdiction’ to try the case as the supposed crimes took place on Brazilian soil, and that the family is charged with ‘corruption between private individuals’.

2023 Presidential Elections: Tinubu and Atiku verbally attack each other

Presidential candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, were at each other’s jugular, yesterday, over alleged divisive politics and threat to national harmony.

Tinubu fired a salvo at Atiku Abubakar, saying the PDP flagbearer belongs to a dying breed of politicians who resort to ethnic and regional sentiments in their desperate bid to capture power.

Atiku had at the weekend in Kaduna, during an interactive session with Arewa Joint Committee, allegedly said that Northerners needed someone of his stature and not a Yoruba or Igbo president.

Head of New Media at the APC Presidential Campaign Council PCC, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode in a statement, said Atiku’s words were not only unacceptable but also insulting, irresponsible and despicable.

“This is especially so, given the fact that by next year, we would have had eight years of Northern/Fulani rule and now this man (Atiku) says we must have another eight years of it because that is what is ‘best for the North’.

“Most Northerners do not believe this and thankfully, they, unlike Atiku and members of his divided party, do not see Southerners as slaves and they regard us all as being equal.

“We will not allow Atiku to do to us what he did to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. We will neither be cheated nor denied.

“It is time for power to shift to the South and an overwhelming number of the people in the North and certainly all the Northerners in the APC believe that. They recognize the fact that if we want our nation to continue to enjoy peace and remain united into the distant future, we must be fair in our dealings with one another.

“Atiku is a dying breed who still sees things from a regional, ethnic and religious prism. Nigeria has moved on from that and she deserves better. Our nation will not accept an ethnic bigot and tribal champion as their President.

“Atiku Ibn Dubai does not speak for the North, he speaks for his deluded and blind PDP supporters and his PCC. Nigeria does not need a Northern or Southern President, she needs a Nigerian President and Bola Ahmed Tinubu is that President,” added Fani-Kayode.

‘It’s ethnocentric opportunism’

Tinubu in a separate statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of his campaign council, Mr Bayo Onanuga, noted that Atiku’s declaration to the effect that Northerners don’t need a Yoruba or Igbo president was the worst expression of ethnocentric opportunism ever uttered by a former Nigerian Vice President.

According to him, this clearly demonstrates how low a man honoured with the second highest office of the Nigerian Constitution is willing to sink in search of a perennial wild goose chase after the highest office in the land.

He said: “It confirms the argument that Atiku has feasted on such base, cheap, primordial sentiments to use the masses and the elite of the North as the ladder to ascend to power since 1989 without any dividends to show.

“Doubling down in his now infamous speech, Atiku said: ‘What the average Northerner needs is somebody who is from the North and also understands that part of the country and has been able to build bridges across the country. This is what the North needs. It doesn’t need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate. I stand before you as a Pan-Nigerian of Northern origin.’

“In clear terms, Atiku who stole the PDP ticket, by a similar mindset, has cast himself as a Northern candidate, who should solely be supported by the people from his region.”

Tinubu noted that Atiku’s public declaration which framed him as an ethnic and regional champion is unbecoming of a man who was once the Vice-President of Nigeria.

The APC standard bearer, however, said he was not surprised by Atiku’s desperate position, adding that the former vice president had resorted to whipping up ethnic sentiments, knowing that his chances of being elected had become a mirage.

“He has himself, not anybody else, to blame for his expected electoral misfortune. First, he broke the fundamental rules of power rotation in his party and the country.

“As if this cardinal sin was not enough, the PDP candidate has remained defiant in the face of pressure by preserving the two topmost posts in his party for people from his region.

“The Nigerian public now knows better that a man, who has been campaigning as a so-called unifier of our disparate groups, is a tribal jingoist, who has now totally eviscerated all pretensions to being a detribalised Nigerian,” Tinubu added.

Tinubu, greatest threat to national cohesion, democratic norms — Atiku

Reacting to Tinubu’s attack, the spokesperson of Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said Tinubu best fits the allegations of the APC PCC and its standard bearer.

Ologbondiyan said: “Atiku is known across the length and breadth of our nation as a symbol of cohesion, unity and purposeful collaboration.

“If anything, Tinubu has been an apostle of regional politics where ethnicity and division along religious lines are dominant.

“As a matter of fact, his contemporary politics showcases a blatant disregard for ethnic groupings other than his.

“Nigerians have not forgotten past elections where compatriots who did not share in Tinubu’s ethnic-based political beliefs and proclivities were threatened that they will be chased into the ocean.

“Neither have Nigerians forgotten the threats of ejection from Lagos on the political opponents of Tinubu and the wanton destruction of electoral materials in areas where the former governor’s party would not do well.

“It is imperative to state that the campaign of calumny against Atiku notwithstanding, he is the pan-Nigerian leader loved and respected across the six geo-political zones of our nation.”

Atiku trying to divide Nigeria as he divided PDP, says APC

Indeed, the APC also slammed Atiku Abubakar for his comments at the weekend in Kaduna where he reportedly said the average northerner needs a northern president and not a president of Yoruba or Igbo extraction.

According to the ruling party, Atiku evidently seeks to inflict on Nigeria discord and strife of a worse kind than he has inflicted on his PDP.

“Against the dictates of his party’s constitution on the principle of power rotation between and North and South of Nigeria, Atiku wrestled Presidential Candidacy and left his party in fractious disability.

“In direct contrast to Atiku’s schismatic tendency, our Northern Progressive APC Governors stood valiantly in support of the emergence of a Southern Presidential Candidate of our Party in demonstration of patriotic commitment to our national unity, equity and fairness. That is what Nigeria needs, now and ever”, APC said in a statement on Sunday by its spokesman, Felix Morka.

Atiku should withdraw from race, apologize to Nigerians—Group

National Coordinator of The Patriots Roundtable, Prince Uthman Shodipe-Dosunmu, yesterday, called on Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the race for urging Nigerians to vote for a northern candidate and disregard any candidate coming from the South.

Shodipe-Dosunmu, in a statement, described the PDP candidate’s remarks as outrageous, “a nasty faux pas of the worst order.”

The statement reads: “Yesterday (Saturday) the PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar who falsely claims to be a unifier urged Nigerians to vote for a northern candidate and disregard any candidate coming from the South. This is just putting it mildly. What Atiku actually posited is that both Yoruba and Igbo candidates are unreflective of the Nigerian Union.

This is outrageous, a nasty faux pas of the worst order.

“In a nation of multi-ethnic groups, Atiku has stacked himself up there as the defender of a super group. This is hardly ennobling. It is in fact a Freudian slip. Surely Nigeria does not need a divisive candidate who is selling his tribal origin as the only marketable tool to win the presidency. This is quite sickening and unacceptable.

Tinubu meets Northern leaders today

Meanwhile, a few days after his counterpart in the PDP met with Northern leaders, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC will meet with the same group, today.

A statement from the Tinubu Media Office signed by Tunde Rahman, noted that the interactive session is at the behest of leaders from northern Nigeria under the auspices of Arewa Joint Committee.

According to Rahman, the meeting is part of a wider interaction with selected presidential candidates to discuss their plans for the region, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The event, which holds at the Arewa House in Kaduna, is organised by a coalition of six groups and institutions from the North. They include the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Arewa House, Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa and Arewa Research and Development Project.

The statement added that the APC presidential candidate would attend the event as part of his decision to engage all segments of Nigerian society with his campaign message of hope, national unity and prosperity.

“The open interaction, scheduled for 1 pm on Monday, will be televised live on Television Continental, TVC,” said Rahman.

Brazilian court fines Apple $20M for selling iPhones without chargers

A Brazilian court in Sao Paulo on Thursday fined the American multinational technology company, Apple Inc a sum of $20 million for selling iPhones without battery chargers in the South American country.

The association of borrowers, consumers and taxpayers filed the lawsuit arguing that Apple committed abusive practices by selling its flagship product without a charger in 2020.

According to AFP, the decision, which can be appealed, came after Brazil’s justice ministry slapped a separate fine of nearly $2.5 million on Apple in September over the same issue and prevented it from selling its iPhone 12 and 13 models without chargers.

Judge Caramuru Afonso Francisco fined Apple 100 million reais approximately $20 million as damages but the company said it stopped including outlet chargers with new iPhones in October 2020, as it wanted to help reduce electronics waste.

But the move effectively “requires consumers to purchase a second product in order for the first to work,” Francisco wrote in his ruling.

Francisco gave the order to supply chargers to all consumers in Brazil who bought iPhone models 12 or 13 in the past two years, and begin including them with all new purchases.

Last week, the European Parliament passed a law requiring all smartphones, tablets and cameras to use USB-C ports as the single charger standard from late 2024, which will force Apple to change its phone designs.

Russian Govt. declares 11 killed and 15 injured on military training location

Russia on Saturday declared a “terrorist” attack on its military training ground in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, lamenting that at least 11 people were killed and 15 injured in the attack.

The defence ministry of Russia cited by Russian news agencies, stated that the attack occurred during a training session for volunteers for the “special military operation” in Ukraine which commenced towards the end of February.

The Russian defence ministry had stated: “On October 15, two citizens of a CIS country committed an act of terror at training range of the Western military district in the Belgorod region.

“As a result, 11 people were fatally wounded. Another 15 people suffered injuries of varying gravity and were taken to medical facilities.”

The defence ministry, however, noted  that two of the attackers “were killed in retaliatory fire”.

“More money brings more problems than comfort” – Akon

Popular Senegalese-American singer and producer, Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, known as Akon, has claimed that the problems that always come with money are more than the comfort it brings.

The singer, during a radio interview, lamented the challenges associated with having money.

Akon said “Money does not necessarily buy happiness as it largely depends on what makes one happy.

“People who have money do not have time as it makes you lose yourself and takes you away from your family.

“Money brings you more problems than it brings comfort. You lose yourself. You can’t find time for your family. That’s no comfort.”

The 49-year-old singer went on to explain that since money makes people unable to find time for their family, then that is no comfort.

Turkey introduces 3-year-jail term for spreading ‘fake news’

Turkey’s parliament on Thursday, October 13,  approved a tough pre-election law that could see reporters and social media users jailed for up to three years for spreading “fake news”.

The new rules cement the government’s already-firm grip on the media eight months before a general election that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan enters trailing in the polls.

The Council of Europe said the measure’s vague definition of “disinformation” and accompanying threat of jail could have a “chilling effect and increased self-censorship, not least in view of the upcoming elections in June 2023”.

The legislation comprised of 40 amendments that each required a separate vote was proposed by Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted AKP party and furiously opposed by Turkey’s main opposition groups.

One lawmaker from the secular CHP party smashed his mobile phone with a hammer in parliament to demonstrate how freedom of expression was being destroyed particularly for the young.

“I would like to address my brothers who are 15, 16, 17 years old and who will be deciding the fate of Turkey in 2023,” CHP lawmaker Burak Erbay said before taking out his hammer.

“You have only one freedom left — the phone in your pocket. There’s Instagram, YouTube, Facebook. You communicate there,” he said ahead of the vote.

“If the law here passes in parliament, you can break your phone like this,” he said.

The government has also started publishing a weekly “disinformation bulletin” aimed at debunking what it deems as false news with “accurate and truthful information”.

Lawmakers rejected repeated opposition attempts to dilute the legislation before the vote.

“This law declares war on the truth,” pro-Kurdish opposition HDP party lawmaker Meral Danis Bektas said.

Appeal Court dismisses Nigerian Govt’s terrorism charges against Nnamdi Kanu

The Appeal Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, of terrorism charges.

Kanu approached the Appeal Court seeking to quash the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

The leader of the secessionist group had faulted the order of Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court, Abuja, which ordered him to answer seven out of the 15-count terrorism charge against him.

He had prayed the appellate court to quash the entire charges and set him free on various grounds.

The IPOB leader had said the purported offences were not committed in Nigeria.

Subsequently, the Justice Hanatu Sankey-led 3-man panel of Justices, discharged Kanu.

Yje ruling was disclosed by Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor.

In a tweet, Ejiofor wrote: “Appeal allowed, MNk discharged and acquitted.

“Appeal allowed , Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU, discharged and acquitted. We have won! Victory victory victory victory.”

See the Top 10 victories Peter Obi has won – Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo

The 61-year-old presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has won 61 victories even before Nigerians cast their first votes in the 2023 presidential election. Some of the victories are for Nigeria, some are for the Igbo people, and some are for the state that Peter Obi once governed — Anambra state.

Here are the top 10 victories, in no particular order.

From the beginning, Peter Obi was running his campaign, scared of people associating the movement with anything Igbo. He repeatedly warned people that they should not vote for him because he was Igbo. Already, Obi won a victory in this regard. He has proven that the snail may try but cannot cast off its shell.

With the success of Peter Obi’s campaign, the political career of Rochas Okorocha and his likes are over. Anambra state achieved that kind of change after Chris Ngige replaced Chinwoke Mbadinuju as the state’s governor. And Ngige begot Peter Obi, and Peter Obi begot Willie Obiano, and Obiano begot Charles Soludo. In the process, Anambra state sent the likes of Andy Uba, Chris Uba, Ifeanyi Uba, Annie Okonkwo, and others into the dustbin of history. It transformed Anambra state away from a territory where moneybags rule.

For every step taken by any Igbo group, be it the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Igbo cultural group, Ohanaeze, or Okija Native Doctors Association, Peter Obi’s campaign is immediately associated with the step and is expected to explain to the nation why he should be allowed to be president in light of the group’s move. Lucky Peter Obi. Other candidates from other parts of Nigeria get denied this victory. For example, nobody ever associated Buhari’s campaign in 2015 with the Boko Haram insurgency, even though Boko Haram named him their preferred man to negotiate for them with the government. Imagine if IPOB had named Obi as their chief negotiator. Most Nigerians do not see Bola Tinubu as a Yoruba candidate, which is unfair to the man from Lagos via Osun. After all, when he said in Abeokuta that it was his turn, he built the argument on the presidency being Yoruba’s turn. Tinubu is also denied credit for the serious campaign for an independent Yoruba nation by Sunday Igboho, Prof. Banji Akintoye, Adeyinka Grandson, and others. That is a gross injustice. Bola Tinubu deserves a victory, just like Peter Obi. And, it goes without saying that Tinubu’s VP, Kashim Shettima, from Boko Haram territory, should be given credit for all the activities of Boko Haram in the north-east since 2009.

The political elite in the five eastern states is not lining up behind Peter Obi. Three of the governors of the zone are with the PDP, while one just recently defected to the ruling APC. The only APGA governor, Charles Soludo of Obi’s home state, Anambra state, has not come out to endorse Obi. Yet, people outside the zone continue to see Obi as an Igbo juggernaut with all the associated privileges. That is a victory for Obi. Though Peter Obi is one of the eight Igbo people running for president in the 2023 election, he is the only one enjoying the tag, the Igbo candidate – not even the presidential candidate of the so-called Igbo party, APGA, receives that designation. That, again, is a special kind of victory.

This is the first time that a product of Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha, is this close to being the president of Nigeria. What a triumph over the graduates of Denis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) and Government College Umuahia. If Obi wins, CKC could become the south-east’s answer to Barewa College.

Peter Obi has proven that all generalisations about the Igbo people of Nigeria are wrong, including this one. Peter Obi’s greatest disruption is the perception of Igbo people in some quarters as aggressive, rude, and loud. Peter Obi is nothing like that. It used to be argued in the Nigerian political space that the Igbo people had no quality candidate to present as a presidential candidate. That argument persisted despite Zik trying out in 1979, Alex Ekwueme trying out in 1999, and so on. In this current season, young people appear to say that Peter Obi stands shoulder-high above other major contestants, despite his flaws. Analysts say that the rest of the country could not support an Igbo person for president because Igbo people did not unite around one candidate. In this dispensation, with seven other Igbo candidates running, Peter Obi has been getting the bulk of the support. Because of Peter Obi, the era of politicians carrying their bags is just beginning. Hopefully, it will lead to them bearing their failures. Festus Okotie-Eboh will be covering his face in shame wherever he is now.

Win or lose, the pendulum of Peter Obi’s quest to be president has smashed Orji Uzo Kalu’s dream of being president. This is a huge victory for the people of Nigeria.

Peter Obi’s insurgence campaign has moved millions from the disenchantment column back into the enchantment column. For everyone who changed his or her profile picture from an image of Sunday Igboho/Nnamdi Kanu/Asari Dokubo/Muhammadu Buhari to that of Obi-Datti is a victory for Nigeria and an indictment for the people who ran Nigeria aground and forced these beautiful fellows to lose their faith in the country.

With political analysts digging up reports, documents, graves, and ghosts of when and where Peter Obi was governor, Anambra state has ceased to be that far-flung state people hear about now and then, but nobody knows what goes on there. Bola Tinubu is yet to smell this victory. That is a victory for a state that has produced some of the most colorful characters in Nigerian history, like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chinua Achebe, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Alex Ekwueme, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Obi Cubana, Chuba Okadigbo, Chika Unigwe, Osita Osadebe, Kenneth Dike, Obi Egbuna, Chukwuemeka Ike, Reverend King, Cosmos Maduka, Cletus Ibeto, Innocent Chukwuma, Jerome Udoji, Olive De Coque, Nkem Nwankwo, Victor Anichebe, Pete Edochie, John Obi Mikel, Christopher Okigbo, Benet Omalu, Nwafor Orizu, Cyprian Tansi, Edwin Madunagu, Clarion Chukwura, Francis Arinze, Chike Obi, Okey Ndibe, Ezego, Chike Okpala, and many others.

Kylian Mbappe in shock move to terminate contract with PSG

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe, could terminate his contract with the club.

According to L’Equipe, the France forward and his team are considering all their options in a bid to leave.

This follows revelations that PSG allegedly used an army of fake Twitter accounts, to wage campaigns against players.

The Ligue 1 champions have already denied this.

With Mbappe himself said to have been a target back in 2019, his decision to leave the club is now final.

Mbappe already felt the club did not keep its promises regarding the summer transfer window, as they failed to bring in a number nine who could play alongside him.

One option being considered is that of terminating his contract, which he signed in May this year, snubbing a mega move to Real Madrid.

Given that the deal – two years with an option for a third – is a fixed-term contract, French law dictates that the World Cup winner would have to pay a high fee to PSG, potentially even more than the salary he is due over the period of the contract.

Sports: Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ ball to be sold for £2.5M

The infamous ball used by Diego Maradona to score two of the most famous goals in football history is to go on auction for an estimated price of £2.5m to £3m.

The match ball was used in the famous 1986 World Cup quarter final between England and Argentina, a match which remains one of the most defining and controversial contests in World Cup history.

Maradona scored the opener by punching the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

Bin Nasser did not spot the handball and allowed the goal to stand, with the player later describing it as being “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God”.

Maradona’s second strike of the match has become known as the ‘goal of the century’, where he dribbled past five England outfield players and slotted past Shilton.

The ball is being sold by Ali Bin Nasser, the Tunisin referee who allowed Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal during the game.

Hand of God ball

Bin Nasser said: “This ball is part of football history – it is the right time to be sharing it with the world.”

The ball is being sold at auction on 16 November as part of a World Cup special event. It will be streamed live and prospective buyers can register their bids online from 28 October.

“The timing of the match, the history between the two teams and the handball have all led to this match going down as one of the most famous and emotive matches in football history,” said Graham Budd, chairman of Graham Budd Auctions who will organize the auction.

“With the history surrounding the ball, we are expecting this lot to be hugely popular when it comes up for auction.”

Several items of sporting memorabilia have broken records at auctions recently. The shirt Maradona wore during the 1986 quarter final was sold in May for $9.3m (£7.4m), a new world record.

This was beaten just three months later when a Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6m (£10.3m) in August.

In September, Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA finals jersey sold for $10.1 (£8.7m), a new world record for any ‘game worn’ sporting memorabilia.

About 95 million registered voters for 2023 Presidential election recorded – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said there are 95 million registered voters for 2023 election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke at an event organised by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) at the NED Headquarters, Washington DC, United States of America, revealed that Nigeria now has 22 million more voters than the whole of West Africa put together.

Mahmood also said INEC has introduced innovations to increase transparency and ensure credibility of the electoral process.

He said;

“There are 18 political parties in the race to produce the next President to be elected by 95 million voters. We had over 84 million registered voters in 2019. But with the last Continuous Registration of Voters (CVR), we are going to add at least 10 million Nigerians and that will take the Register of Voters to 95 million.

“The election is significant because the incumbent President is not eligible to run, this being his second and final term.

“I say this and I won’t be tired of saying it to an audience like this: In West Africa, there are 15 countries including Nigeria. But the total number of registered voters in the 14 countries combined is 73 million. In Nigeria, it’s going to be 95 million.

“So, there will be 22 million more voters in Nigeria than the whole of West Africa put together. Each time Nigeria goes to the polls, it’s like the whole of West Africa voting. And these 95 million citizens will vote in 176, 846 polling units.

“Beyond the presidential election, governorship elections will also hold in 28 out of the 36 states of the country. In eight states, elections are held off season but there will also be elections for all 109 Senatorial districts in the country, 360 Federal constituencies, 993 state constituencies and the Presidential, making a total of 1,491 constituencies for which 18 political parties are sponsoring 12,163 candidates.

“Their names, ages, disability status, academic qualifications, the party they are representing, the constituency they are contesting in are all on our website for both the national and state elections.

“The timetable released by the Commission in February this year identified 14 critical activities to be accomplished by the Commission leading to the election day. So far, nine out of the 14 activities have been successfully accomplished and campaign by political parties and candidates has commenced nationwide.

“We learnt a lot of lessons from the general election conducted in 2015 and 2019 as well as the 103 off cycle elections and bye-elections since the 2019 general elections. We have introduced innovations to increase transparency and ensure credibility of the electoral process.

“The new Electoral Act with its many progressive provisions has provided legal backing to the innovations. On this note, I’ll like to appreciate the civil society organisations and other stakeholders for the intense advocacy leading to the passage of the new law.”

Netflix releases its ‘viewing figures’ to the public

Video streaming giant, Netflix has signed up to the TV ratings agency Barb, which means its viewing figures and audiences will be measured by an external, independent body for the first time in its history.

Previously, the streaming giant has only released snapshots of its viewing data, highlighting the success of its most popular shows but now Barb will become the first industry-owned ratings service in the world that Netflix has joined.

Barb says it will begin reporting Netflix’s viewing figures from November.

The move will see viewing data being used by advertisers, competitors and journalists to ascertain the success or failure of Netflix films and shows.

Barb, which stands for Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board, compiles audience measurement and TV ratings in the UK and says it will report Netflix’s ratings in the same way it reports viewing for more than 300 other subscribing broadcast channels.

The networks currently covered by Barb include mainstream services such as the BBC and ITV to smaller channels such as Dave and E4.

The news comes as Netflix reportedly prepares to launch an ad-supported tier for its streaming platform.

Barbs co-chief executive Reed Hastings said: “Back in 2019, at the RTS conference in Cambridge, I welcomed the idea of Netflix audiences being measured independently.

“We’ve kept in touch with Barb since then and are pleased to make a commitment to its trusted measurement of how people watch television in the UK.”

Justin Sampson, chief executive of Barb, said: “Our audience measurement continuously adapts to accommodate the new platforms and devices that are being used by people to watch their favourite television shows.

“We took a big step forward last year when we started reporting audiences to streaming services.

“Netflix’s commitment to Barb sends a clear signal that what we’re doing is valuable to new and established players in the market.”

ASUU holds Executive meeting to call off strike

The National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is expected to hold today, during which the union will deliberate on recent developments in the face-off between it and the federal government.

Sources told Vanguard that the NEC meeting would be preceded by congresses in its branches nationwide.

In line with its tradition, the NEC meeting would start late on Thursday and the decision made public early Friday morning when the ongoing strike is expected to be called off.

Incidentally, that day would mark the eighth month the industrial action started.

The developments , it was gathered, are as a result of the intervention of speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, in the matter after the Court of Appeal last Friday gave the union seven days to comply with the ruling of the National Industrial Court in Abuja, that it should call off the action before further entertainment of the matter between it and the FG would continue.

Also, the issue of the withheld salaries was resolved, with the government promising to pay in tranches.

The lecturers have not been paid since March like the non-teaching staff who resumed duties about two months ago.

With this development, Governing Councils of affected universities are expected to call for the reopening of the schools from next week.

However, students’ resumption of classes may not be immediate, as hostels and other facilities not used for about eight months would have to be put in shape.

Recall that ASUU went on strike on February 14, this year over some demands from the government.

Top on the list is the use of Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System , IPPIS as the payment platform in the university sector which the union wants scrapped.

Chinese EV firm tests electric flying taxi in Dubai [PHOTO/VIDEO]

A Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing firm, Xpeng tested an electric flying taxi model in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates on Monday.

The demonstration provided a glimpse of revolutionary technology that could convey people through cities high above any traffic.

According to CNBC, the taxi called the X2 was developed by the Guangzhou-based XPeng Incorporation’s aviation affiliate and it is one of the dozens of flying car projects around the world.

The display was held with an empty cockpit, but the company said it carried out a manned flight test in July 202 as the sleekly designed vehicle can carry two passengers and is powered by a set of eight propellers.

Reacting to the innovation, the executive director for international offices at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Omar Abdulaziz Alkhan describes it as a luxury item.

“The flying car is a luxury item and a lot of high net-worth individuals are looking for technology and such luxurious product. Dubai is the place where we have customers,” Alkhan said.

The two-seater vehicle can reach speeds up to 130 kmph and is outfitted with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities.

The X2 is also equipped with autonomous flight capabilities along with intelligent flight control systems. The vehicle is fully electric and emits zero carbon. It can carry up to 500 kg on take-off with eight propellers on board.

Lovin Dubai, a media and entertainment company posted the exhibition of the flying vehicle.

“We will take back Ukraine for as long as it takes” – G7 Nations declares

Leaders of the G7 group of rich nations have said they will back Ukraine for “as long as it takes” in the wake of Russian missile strikes this week.

The group, which met for emergency virtual talks on Tuesday, October 11 said it would keep on giving military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The G7 is made up of the seven largest “advanced” economies which includes Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US.

Nato also said it would stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary.

This comes after at least 19 people were killed and scores more injured, as Russian missiles hit regions across Ukraine, including central Kyiv.

Strikes continued on Tuesday, with civilians advised to stay in air raid shelters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attacks were in retaliation for a strike on a key bridge linking Russia with occupied Crimea, for which he blamed Ukraine even though Ukraine didn’t claim responsibility.

Western leaders were quick to condemn the Russian escalation, and the G7 on Tuesday reiterated its commitment to Ukraine.

“We will continue to provide financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic and legal support and will stand firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” the group said in a statement.

The bloc also condemned Putin’s recent attempts to annex four regions of Ukraine with self-styled referendums.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the G7 for further air defence capabilities.

He also asked the alliance to support an international mission on the Ukraine-Belarus border after Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko – a close ally of Mr Putin – agreed to deploy forces with Russian soldiers at the border with Ukraine.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the military bloc would also continue to stand by Ukraine.

In a press conference, Mr Stoltenberg suggested that Nato needed to produce more weapons, and added that any attack on infrastructure critical to Nato would trigger a “united and determined response”. It comes two weeks after a series of attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which many Western leaders indirectly suggested may have been caused by Russia.

In its statement the G7 said is was “deeply troubled” by these attacks, and welcomed further investigation into what caused them.

“I Killed CEO Usifo Ataga Myself” – Chidinma Confesses

Miss Chidinma Ojukwu, a 300-level, Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos has confessed to killing the Chief Executive Officer of SuperTV, Usifo Michael Ataga.

Ojukwu said she killed Ataga all by herself.

She made the confession in a video played inside the Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square yesterday.

The court also viewed the grim footage of Ataga’s body recorded shortly after he was found in a Lagos short-let apartment apartment.

Miss Ojukwu, a 300-level, Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, is the prime suspect in Ataga’s murder.

She is standing trial for the alleged offence alongside her sister and third defendant Chioma Egbuchu, and second defendant Adedapo Quadri.

They have been on trial since October 12, 2021, when they were arraigned at the high court before Justice Yetunde Adesanya.

According to the Lagos State Government which is prosecuting them, the alleged murder took place on June 15, 2021, at 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

At the resumption of proceedings yesterday the prosecution played the video recording from a Compact Disc (CD) on a large screen in the courtroom.

It showed Ataga lying on the floor facing up with his hands spread open wearing a white singlet and boxers shorts stained with blood. His head was close to the wall and there was blood on the floor on his right hand side.

The video also showed Ojukwu narrating how she killed Ataga, during interrogation by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olusegun Bamidele from the Intelligence and Tactical Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba.

The defendant said she met Ataga through a friend and they started speaking to each other and that on June 13, 2021, he asked her to look for a place for them to stay, so she got the short-let apartment where they ate, drank, took drugs and where he was killed.

Ojukwu said, “After I got the place on Sunday, we were smoking Loud, drinking, watching movies, and then I went to get food. The drug we were taking got finished and I ordered another one and went downstairs to get it from the delivery guy in the morning; that was on June 14, 2021.

“Then on Tuesday, we drank and smoked Loud and I added Rophynol to his drink and we had sex. I was on the bed and he was on the chair. Then later he started disturbing me for more sex. I was tired and after struggling with him, he had his way and still wanted more.

“I thought he was no more interested in sex, only for him to return to the bed to ask for more sex. I pushed him away, which resulted in him hitting his head against a stool that had a glass. He had a cut on his leg and he became weak.

“I got a knife and stabbed him in the neck, ribs and stomach so that he would not be able to harm me. I tied his hands with handkerchief.

“His blood was out and I was scared. I just packed everything, my clothes were also stained with blood, I just packed my things and left.

“Michael (Ataga) was a friend, that we just talked, I didn’t know him that deep and we did not talk regularly.”

Asked in the video if she was assisted in killing Ataga, Ojukwu said, “There was nobody that assisted me, I did it alone.”

Nigerian Doctors and Nurses That Fled To Work In UK Hospitals Lament Exploitation

Facts emerged that doctors recruited from poor countries to work in UK hospitals lamenting  that they are being exploited by their employees.

The doctors also said that  they are so overworked they fear that they might put patients’ health at risk.

A BBC investigation has found evidence that doctors from Nigeria are being recruited by a British healthcare company and expected to work in private hospitals under conditions not allowed in the National Health Service.

the UK since Muhammadu Buhari became Nigerian President in 2015.

According to data obtained from the General Medical Council of the UK, the total number of Nigeria-trained doctors who migrated to the UK as of August 30, 2022 stood at 10,096, The PUNCH reports.

Checks showed that the General Medical Council in the UK licensed at least 353 Nigerian-trained doctors between June 10, 2021 and September 20, 2021.

The BBC has spoken to several foreign medics – including a young Nigerian doctor who worked at the private Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital in 2021.

Augustine Enekwechi said his hours were extreme – on-call 24 hours a day for a week at a time – and that he was unable to leave the hospital grounds. He says working there felt like being in “a prison”.

The tiredness was so intense, he said, there were times he worried he couldn’t properly function.

“I knew that working tired puts the patients at risk and puts myself also at risk, as well for litigation,” he says. “I felt powerless… helpless, you know, constant stress and thinking something could go wrong.”

Nuffield Health disputes those working hours, saying its doctors are offered regular breaks, time off between shifts, and the ability to swap shifts if needed. The company adds that “the health and wellbeing of patients and hospital team members” is its priority.

Augustine was hired out to the Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital from a private company – NES Healthcare. It specialises in employing doctors from overseas, many from Nigeria, and using them as Resident Medical Officers, or RMOs – live-in doctors found mainly in the private sector.

Augustine said he was so excited to be offered a job that he barely looked at the NES contract. In fact, it opted him out of legislation that protects UK workers from excessive working hours – the Working Time Directive – and left him vulnerable to a range of punishing salary deductions.

Augustine is not alone; there are many other medical practitioners facing similar problems. The BMA and the front-line lobbying group the Doctors’ Association has given the BBC’s File on 4 and Newsnight exclusive access to the findings of a questionnaire put to 188 Resident Medical Officers. Most of the doctors were employed by NES but some were with other employers.

It found that 92% had been recruited from Africa and most – 81% – were from Nigeria. The majority complained about excessive working hours and unfair salary deductions.

For years now, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against the “active recruitment” of doctors and nurses from developing countries with severe shortages of medical personnel. The WHO has compiled a list of 47 such countries – most of them in Africa. The UK government has incorporated that list into its own code of practice – calling it the “red list”. In effect, it makes Nigeria a no-go destination for British medical recruiters.

So how did the doctors come to be working in the UK in the first place? We travelled to Nigeria and witnessed another troubling side to this story.

In an exam hall in Lagos, the country’s biggest city, BBC found hundreds of doctors queuing to take what’s called a Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test – or PLAB 1. The paper is set by the General Medical Council in London and is the first step required by the British medical authorities to secure a licence to work in the UK.

The doctors we spoke to say, they were attracted by the potential of higher salaries and better working conditions. The event was being overseen by staff from the British Council – an organisation sponsored by the Foreign Office.

The GMC also offers the exams in several other red-list countries – Ghana, Sudan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Both the GMC and British Council deny they are involved in “active recruitment” and say they’re simply helping provide a service for doctors wanting to come to the UK independently – something that is allowed under the guidelines.

In Augustine’s case, he was studying for the second part of those PLAB exams in the UK, when he was approached by NES Healthcare and later offered visa sponsorship and a potential job.

While that does appear to have been “active recruitment” – NES says it wasn’t, because it is not a recruitment agency and, as such, only engages with doctors from overseas once they’ve already committed to practising in the UK. But the Department of Health and Social Care told us the UK code of practice did apply to NES – so the company was in breach of it.

BBC spoke to several African doctors recruited in this way by NES. They all had similar stories about what the terms and conditions of their contracts meant in reality, once they had been hired out to private UK hospitals.

“It’s not humanly possible to do that every day for seven days,” says Dr Femi Johnson

Dr Femi Johnson was sent to a different hospital to Augustine, but says he was also expected to work 14 to 16-hour days and then be on call overnight. “I was burnt out,” he says. “I was tired, I needed sleep. It’s not humanly possible to do that every day for seven days.”

But when he needed a break because he was too exhausted to continue, NES were entitled to deduct money from his salary. The company says that is to cover the cost of finding a replacement doctor, but Femi says it leaves NES doctors in a terrible dilemma.

“In situations like that, I always make that internal discussion with my inner self – ‘Femi are you doing right by yourself and are you doing right by the patient?’” he tells us. “Unfortunately, I haven’t always been able to answer that question.”

“This is a slave-type work,” says Dr Jenny Vaughan from the Doctors’ Association.

Some NES doctors have received help from Dr Jenny Vaughan from the Doctors’ Association. She receives many complaints from Resident Medical Officers and says the UK healthcare system has developed into two tiers – one for NHS doctors, the other for international recruits working in the private sector.

NHS doctors can only be scheduled to work up to 48 hours, and if they request, up to 72 hours a week.

“No doctor in the NHS does more than four nights consecutively because we know that it’s frankly not safe,” says Dr Vaughan.

“This is a slave-type work with… excess hours, the like of which we thought had been gone 30 years ago.

“It is not acceptable for patients for patient-safety reasons. It is not acceptable for doctors. ”

Portugal Govt. launches new visa scheme for remote workers

Portugal has decide to launch a new visa scheme for digital nomads who want to settle in the country.

The southern European country made the decision after a recent parliamentary proceeding which led to the amendment of the nation’s ‘law on foreign nationals’.

A digital nomad is someone who works remotely while travelling to different locations.

Under the new scheme, remote workers can live and work in the country for up to one year, or apply for residency to stay longer.

The government said applications for the new digital nomad visa will be accepted from October 30, 2022.

To be eligible for the digital nomad visa, remote workers must be from countries that are not part of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA).

The Portuguese government said the visa is split into two categories, encompassing both remote workers aiming for a temporary stay of up to one year; and also digital nomads looking for a residency visa in Portugal

5 PDP Governors finally abandon Atiku amidst Unresolved issues

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday flagged-off its presidential campaign amidst an unresolved internal crisis.

An angry Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his allies, who are yet to be assuaged after the party’s presidential primary, sent a clear signal to the rally.

Though the campaign flag-off was well attended, observers say the absence of Wike, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Samuel Ortom of Benue and Seyi Makinde of Oyo is a huge blow to the opposition party’s dream of reclaiming the number one seat in the country.

Present at the event were the party’s presidential candidate and ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, his running mate, and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, his Adamawa counterpart, Ahmadu Fintiri and the former lawmaker representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, among others.

This is not the first time the aggrieved governors are boycotting the party’s major event since Atiku’s emergence.

DAILY POST recalls that in September when the PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) was inaugurated, Wike and his allies, including Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, still stayed away.

Their action is hinged on the insistence that the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia AAyu must resign to provide for a sense of equity in the leadership of the party, with the Southern part of the country feeling neglected.

Prior to Ayu’s emergence as PDP national chairman, Wike and his allies were all over attending PDP activities and calling the shots.

However, after Ayu emerged chairman, the PDP, unlike the APC, refused to zone its presidential ticket to the South; it rather threw it open, paving the way for Atiku to clinch the ticket.

According to Governor Wike’s group, Ayu was supposed to step down immediately to allow a Southerner take over and ensure a balanced leadership in the party. But Ayu is not ready for that.

Few days ago, Atiku was said to have made another overture to Wike during a private meeting in Abuja where he reportedly promised to support the Rivers’ Governor in 2027, same promise he made to the South-East during his meeting with PDP stakeholders in Enugu.

Shortly after meeting with Atiku, Wike and his colleagues, who are now called G-5 Governors, stormed Enugu, where they held a closed-door meeting.

Though the G-5 refused to brief journalists after the meeting, a source had hinted that they sealed Atiku’s fate.

“Their stand remains that if Ayu refuses to resign, they will not be part of any presidential campaign of the party.

“Both Atiku and Ayu are obstinate to the calls for the national chairman’s resignation; what it means is that they don’t value the support of these governors. So, the G-5 Governors have also decided not to move an inch from their stand.

“They made that point clear again today in Uyo and there is no going back; these Governors have been the ones sustaining the party, but Atiku and Ayu came from nowhere and want to rubbish them. Let’s see how far they will go,” the highly placed source said.

Speaking to DAILY POST on the latest development, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro said the action of the G-5 Governors was not a surprise.

He noted that the G-5 Governors were right to boycott Atiku’s campaign flag-off owing to the PDP’s unjust treatment of Southern Nigeria.

Isizuzoro said, “They have shown that they are true Nigerians. How could you explain a situation where a party’s presidential candidate and the national chairman will come from one region? So, what are they going to tell the people during the campaign?

“How would these Southern and Middle-Belt Governors go and start preaching to people to support Atiku? It will be a misnomer, it will be a bad show.

“We told you the last time that about 18 Governors are behind Peter Obi. Atiku is being deceived by someone in the presidency; he will only survive 2023 if he heeds to the demand of Wike and his group.

“But if he continues to let pride rule over him, what happened to him in 2019 would be a child’s play to the fate that will befall him in 2023. He will come a distant third in that election. It appears that the gods have blinded his reasoning and that is why Ayu has refused to step down. PDP as it is constituted today has no sense of justice and equity.

“You saw that the stadium could not even be filled up; Wike alone is a mass movement; so, you can’t underrate his absence, alongside his four other colleagues.”

“Don’t also forget that Atiku is not sincere towards resolving the crisis at all. Recall that in Enugu he told the people of the South-East that his presidency will be a stepping stone to their dream of having a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction. Few days later, he was quoted to have promised Wike of the same presidency in 2027. Is this a leader you can trust? NIgerians are wiser now,” the Ohaneze scribe added.

Tsai, Taiwan’s President promises to defend the Island completely against China

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has said that there is “no room for compromise” over the self-ruled island’s sovereignty even though she is willing to work with China to find “mutually acceptable ways” to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan, home to 23 million people, lies fewer than 110 miles (177 kilometers) off the coast of China. For more than 70 years the two sides have been governed separately, but that hasn’t stopped China’s ruling Communist Party from claiming the island as its own – despite having never controlled it.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said that “reunification” between China and Taiwan is inevitable and refused to rule out the use of force – but in her speech Monday, Tsai urged Chinese leaders not to go down that path.

“The consensus of the Taiwanese people … is to defend our sovereignty and our free and democratic way of life. There is no room for compromise on this,” Tsai said in a speech marking Taiwan’s National Day on Monday, October 10, delivered as tensions between Taipei and Beijing simmer at the highest point in recent decades.

Tsai

“I call on the Beijing authorities that resorting to war must not be the option for cross-strait relations,” Tsai said. “Only by respecting Taiwanese people’s insistence on sovereignty, freedom and democracy can we resume positive interactions across the Taiwan Strait.”

Following the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in early August, China stepped up military pressure tactics on the island, sending fighter jets across the median line of the Taiwan Strait, the body of water separating Taiwan and China.

For decades, the median line had served as an informal demarcation line between the two countries..

Last week, Taiwan’s Defense Minister warned that Chinese fighter jets or drones that intrude into Taiwan’s territorial airspace – defined as 12 nautical miles (22.2 kilometers) from the island’s shores – will be regarded as a “first strike,” as Taipei seeks to step-up its defenses in response to Beijing’s military pressure.

Tsai said in her speech that Taiwan is an “important symbol” of democracy in the world and its people are determined to defend the island.

“The international community is very clear that defending Taiwan’s security equals defending regional stability and democratic values. If Taiwan’s democratic freedoms are destroyed, it will be a major setback for democracies around the world,” she said.

Vladimir Putin claims responsibility for missiles attacks on Ukranian cities

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has said that Ukraine had carried out “terrorist acts”, admitting his military replied by bombing civilian, administrative and energy buildings of Ukraine.

In televised remarks, Putin said Moscow had launched long-range missile attacks on Monday, October 10 in retaliation for an attack on a vital bridge linking Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula over the weekend.

“It is obvious that the Ukrainian secret services ordered, organised and carried out the terrorist attack aimed at destroying Russia’s critical civilian infrastructure,” Putin said of the bridge explosion.

Vladimir Putin claims responsibility for missiles attacks on Ukranian cities

Ukrainian officials praised the bridge destruction but Kyiv’s government didn’t claim responsibility.

“Through its actions, the Kyiv regime has put itself on a par with the most odious of international terrorist groups. It is simply impossible to leave crimes of this kind unanswered,” Putin said, in opening remarks at a meeting of his powerful Security Council.

Cities across Ukraine were left without power or water and several people were killed in Russian missile strikes on more than a dozen Ukrainian cities on Monday morning.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said: “Putin is a terrorist who talks with missiles.”

Reacting, Putin said Russia would respond “harshly” to any further attacks by Ukraine on ‘Russian infrastructure’.

“If attempts continue to carry out terrorist acts on our territory, Russia’s responses will be harsh and in their scale will correspond to the level of threats created for the Russian Federation. No one should have any doubt about that,” Putin said.

Putin also accused Ukraine of attempting to carry out an attack against a nuclear power plant in Russia and against the TurkStream gas pipeline.

He repeated his assertion that Ukraine and NATO were behind still-unexplained ruptures to the Nord Stream gas pipelines which run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea.

Antoine Griezmann leaves Barcelona permanently for Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid confirmed they have agreed on a deal to sign French striker Antoine Griezmann permanently from Barcelona, on a contract until 2026.

Griezmann has been on loan at Atletico since August 2021 after a difficult spell at Camp Nou, following his 120 million euro (116.5 million dollar) move in 2019.

“Griezmann has signed a deal that links him to our club until June 30, 2026,” said Atletico in a statement.

The 2018 World Cup winner was a key figure in coach Diego Simeone’s plans last season but has largely been reduced to substitute appearances in the current campaign as Atletico tried to escape paying a reported obligatory 40 million euro purchase fee if he played over a certain number of games.

Atletico and Barcelona negotiated a new deal with Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirming the fee during the club’s members’ assembly on Sunday.

“It is for 20 million euros plus four more in variables,” said Laporta.

“There is another clause in the deal to sell the player, which is that if Atletico decide to sell him in the future they will have to pay us the difference that remains, up to the value of the 40 million which was agreed before.”

Griezmann has played 303 times for the club, scoring 144 goals, across his two stints in the capital.

He netted 35 goals in 102 appearances for Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey there in 2021.

Wife wakes up to find her husband raping their 5-year-old daughter

Police are investigating after a woman accused her husband of raping their 5-year-old daughter on Sunday night, October 9.

According to Prem Balram from Reaction Unit South Africa, they received a call for assistance on Sunday night just after 10pm.

He said the child’s mother, aged 37, told Reaction Unit officers, that she had been asleep in bed with her 5-year-old twins, a boy and girl, when her husband arrived home intoxicated.

“She told officers that when she woke up she discovered her husband raping her daughter.

Putin deploys Elite-Guard to ‘arrest soldiers’ as he fears coup

Ukraine’s military Intelligence has claimed an elite unit of the Russian military has been deployed to firm up security in Moscow as president Vladimir Putin fears he could be deposed in a coup.

Kyiv’s intelligence officials on Sunday, October 9 told local media that Putin’s fearsome ODON unit of the Russian National Guard had started rounding up and arresting other soldiers as Putin is wary of being ousted in a coup.

“All military units on the perimeter of Moscow have been put on high alert”.

“Putin is terrified of the possibility that he could be ousted and killed as murmurs of growing discontent emerge among the Russian elite.”

Although the Russian media have not made any such reports, the Ukrainian reports of the ODON guardsmen in Moscow could be attempts to sow division amongst Putin’s fractured ruling elite and military brass by the Ukranian intelligence.

The report came just hours after Putin’s prized bridge from Russia to annexed Crimea was blown up in a suspected attack by Ukraine.

ODON troops – officially named the Separate Operational Purpose Division – are an internal security division of the Russian National Guard.

The special rapid response unit is comprised of around 18,000 men and is controlled by Major General Nikolai Kuznetsov.

Kyiv intelligence claimed the ODON forces have been deployed in Moscow and “numerous arrests, detentions and blockades have taken place”.

The report comes amid a time of growing dissent over Putin’s disastrous war in Ukraine.

With sweeping offensives, the Ukrainians are consistently on the front foot and have retaken swathes of land in the east and south.

A Western intelligence official said to Washington Post: “Since the start of the occupation we have witnessed growing alarm from a number of Putin’s inner circle.

“Our assessments suggest they are particularly exercised by recent Russian losses, misguided direction and extensive military shortcomings.”

A second senior Western official said the tensions are “consistent with the way in which the campaign has gone for the Russians, and the atmospherics in the Kremlin”.

“There are a lot of people who are convinced this isn’t going well or the right course of action,” they added.

‘BBNaija show is DEMONIC must be stopped’ – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has supported calls of the Director-General of the National Council for Art and Culture (NCAA), Segun Runsewe, for members of the House of Representatives to give the body a legal framework to go after the organizers of Big Brother Naija (BBN) over nudity displayed on the show as well as powers to arrest and prosecute crossdressers in the country.

Runsewe made the appeal during an investigative hearing by an ad hoc committee of the House on Tuesday, October 4.

In a statement released by its group director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola on Sunday, October 9, MURIC backed Runsewe’s calls, stating that the reality TV show is “demonic.”

“The Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Segun Runsewe on October 4 called on the National Assembly (NASS) to give his agency powers to go after BB Naija in order to stop nudity in the reality TV show.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) supports Runsewe’s call and we see no reason why the NASS will hesitate to give him all necessary backing. Big Brother Naija’s reality TV show is the devil incarnate misleading Nigerian youth.

MURIC has been consistent in its condemnation of BB Naija. We can recall two separate statements issued on the reality TV show. On July 12, 2019, we made a statement titled ‘Ban BB Naija.

Again on Oct. 8, 2020, we issued another statement under the caption ‘MURIC Chides Ogun Governor Over BBNaija Gifts’.

That was when the governor gave a bungalow and N5 million cash to the winner of the reality TV show.

We saw the governor’s action as idolising immorality and demonising discipline. We described his action as ‘disappointing, disgusting, misplaced and myopic.

We call on the NASS to listen to Runsewe. It is the voice of reason. BBNaija is forcibly dragging our youths to a world of nudity, debauchery and shamelessness. BBNaija constitutes a potent threat to every home. It is open rape on our cultures, values and norms. BBNaija is lactiferous.

The NASS will have its name indelibly carved in letters of gold if it hearkens to the plea made by Runsewe. His appeal has revealed the weakness in our legal system.

It has revealed that there are no extant laws powerful enough to stop romance and sex on our television channels. The time to give the law the teeth to bite is now.”

Kanye West suspended from Twitter, might be having mental issues

Kanye West has been suspended from his Twitter account after making a slew of anti-Semitic comments which drew backlash from Jewish celebrities and politicians.

The Billionaire rapper took to Twitter to declare war on the Jewish community following his controversial Paris Fashion Week show, where he showcased his White Lives Matter shirts.

He was today barred from posting on his Twitter account after the shocking threats shortly after being restricted on Instagram.

In a post, that has since been removed by Twitter, Kanye wrote: ‘I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.’

He added: ‘The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also.

‘You guys have toyed with me and tried to blackball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.’

A Twitter spokesman said: ‘The account in question has been locked due to a violation of Twitter’s policies.’ This means that the rapper will be unable to post.

West previously accused rapper Diddy of being controlled by Jewish people trying to silence his ‘White Lives Matter’ message – resulting in his Instagram account being restricted.

Diddy responded in a post saying he hopes we stop all this ‘coonin’ and baffoonin’.’

He also took a swipe at Kanye writing: ‘We don’t have the time! We are under a state of emergency!!! Unapologetically black first!’

This comes as reality star Real Housewives of New York star Lizzy Savetsky received a barrage of anti-Jewish abuse for calling out Kanye’s vile antisemitism.

In a clip, Savetsky said that Instagram had become a ‘breeding ground for antisemitism’ as she berated the app and Kanye for his hateful comments.

Among the backlash, the reality star was told to ‘get your hidey hole in the attic ready for you and the family’ – a reference to Anne Frank, who was killed by the Nazis in 1945.

She took to social media and said: ‘Thankfully Instagram has restricted Kanye’s account. That doesn’t change the fact that I continue to receive shockingly hateful, evening-threatening comments in support of his anti-Semitic message.

The mother-of-three from Texas added: ‘My children’s great-grandmother didn’t survive Auschwitz so we could sit idly by as people threaten our existence as a people. We have to speak up! I take these threats very seriously and you should to.’

Following her rant, Savetsky reposted recent Kanye’s tweet and simply wrote: ‘In case you didn’t see Kanye’s since removed tweet.’

Kanye’s post was quickly removed from Twitter – however, his account was not restricted.

Comedian Hannah Einbinder told her 124,000 followers on Instagram after Kanye’s tweets: ‘Just a reminder that if you f*** with this man then you are dead to me.

‘Gonna need my non-Jewish friends to condemn that s***. It can’t just be Jews defending ourselves, there aren’t enough of us left. We need allies.’

Ritchie Torres, who is a US representative for New York’s 15th congressional district, was also among politicians and celebrities calling out the rapper for his antisemitism.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Kanye West: if you see yourself at war with Jewish people, then you are, by definition, Antisemitic. Shame on you and your enablers.’

British comedian and author David Baddiel added: ‘Kanye West’s threat to Jews is as ever based on a myth of Jewish power, a myth believed across the political spectrum.’

The writer, who penned the book Jews Don’t Count, said: ‘It lies at the heart of the Jews Don’t Count phenomenon: Jews are powerful so attacking them is punching up and concern for them in the face of it unnecessary.’

Veteran New York State Representative Dov Hikind also called out the rapper for his spew of hatred, calling him a ‘sick man.’

Hikind said: ‘Kanye is a Jew-hater in denial. He’s clearly a sick man

‘Twitter removed Kanye’s nasty and dangerous antisemitic tweet, but we will not forget the line this man has crossed.

‘We can only watch with the same sadness shared by his own family as Kanye West self destructs and attacks his former friends. Ye who sows hate shall reap sorrow.’

Nigeria to complete digitisation of passport processing soon – Aregesola

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has said that the full digitisation of Nigerian passport processes would be completed by December.

Aregbesola disclosed this when he featured on the News program in Abuja.

He said that full digitisation would completely eliminate any form of contact between passport applicants and immigration officers.

According to him, this will eliminate the inherent corruption in the system.

The minister said that the project was one of the priorities of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“We are on it, and by December we will remove any manual processing of passports.

“Now, we still have some manual part, because files are still manually opened.

“By December, particularly in the busiest passport processing centres, there will be no manual segment of the passport processing, every part of it will be digitised,” he added.

According to him, there is no shortage of passport booklets in the country and advised applicants to begin the processing of their passports at least six months before scheduled time of travel.

“If you need a passport now, start the process very early, do not begin the processing efforts two weeks to your travelling.

“If you don’t, already you have created problems for yourself, because the system, after capturing, which is enrolment of your data, we harmonise it with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) data base,” he said.

Aregbesola also urged passport applicants to ensure their names and other information tally with their details on the National Identity data base.

“Every identity document must be the same to ease capturing,” he said, adding that even wrong arrangements of names could create delay in the processing of passport.

“You must understand what it is. It is a presidential order that the new passport regime should be such that all data, everything about you as an individual must be the same and harmonised.

“What you have in the passport, which is the most secured identity document, must be the same with every other aspects of you, whether in the bank or at the national identity data base.

“When you come to us to register, after filling your form online, you come for data capturing, and what you do there is to harmonise what you have filed in your form and your bio-data as we advance.

“So when your name doesn’t tally with what we have, your data information is not the same on the relevant platforms, we will have some challenges with passport processing,” he said.

One of Oyedepo’s Sacked Pastors Files Lawsuit, Demands N350M

Domino Mbang, a pastor who was dismissed as the area pastor of Living Faith Church (aka Winners’ Chapel) in Palm Street Assembly, Atakpa, Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, has filed a lawsuit to challenge his dismissal.

Mbang dragged the church before the National Industrial Court in Calabar, seeking N350m in damages.

The cleric, who claims to be a graduate of mathematics and statistics, University of Calabar, alleged persecution from some persons in the church.

In suit No: NICN/CA/25/2022 between Mbang as claimant and the presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide Incorporated, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Adebisi Aboluwade and two other defendants, the applicant said he went to court to seek redress and to enable the authorities of the church to know how he was treated.

He said, “I was a member of the church for over a decade before training to become a pastor. At least, I have spent more than two decades in the ministry, that alone makes me a son to our general overseer, Bishop David Oyedepo.”

Mbang, who claimed to be an area pastor with 16 branches of the church in Calabar South under his auspices, stated that he was unlawfully sacked by a cabal made up of Pastor Tamunotoye Chukunda and the state pastor Adeolu Adewumi.

“According to the church Operational Mandate, before a pastor is sacked, he would first be queried with a letter and made to appear before a disciplinary committee to answer pertinent questions and thereafter be issued with three warnings before he can be issued a termination of appointment letter. In my case, nothing of such happened.

“Apart from the query that was issued, what followed immediately was a sacked letter without availing me the opportunity to appear before any disciplinary panel. The cabals headed by Pastor Adeolu and Pastor Chukunda connived and kicked out without following due process.

“The Mandate Book serves like a constitution of the organization, unfortunately it was never followed, probably because they didn’t like my face.

“Both of them cannot claim to be more of Bishop Oyedepo’s God sons than myself, we are all his children in the lord. No query letter was served to me. The only letter given to me by the cabals was a sacked letter and for a year now my salary has been stopped.

“As I speak to you, I can’t even pay my children school fees nor pay my rent, or afford food, clothing and medicine for my kids,” Mbang lamented.

However, an official of the church denied all the allegations.

“A query was served to him because of the way he was misbehaving. We are a responsible organisation, we couldn’t have sacked a man of God in the manner which he claimed,” the official told Leadership newspaper.

The case will be heard on October 26.

Putin Preparing Russians to be ready for Nuclear War – Zelensky

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russian government officials have begun to “prepare their society” for the possible use of nuclear weapons, saying the world must act now even though he doesn’t believe that Russia is ready to use them now.

In recent weeks, the Ukrainian army has recaptured large swathes of territory in a successful counter-offensive that has forced Russian troops to abandon long-held positions. In what Kyiv describes as Moscow’s response to its defeats, President Vladimir Putin has incorporated four partially occupied regions of Ukraine.

The annexations, widely dismissed as illegal, have raised fears of a possible escalation in the seven-month war. President Putin and other senior Russian officials have suggested that nuclear weapons – possibly smaller, tactical weapons – could be used to defend those areas, although Western officials say there has been no evidence Moscow is prepared to do so.

Russians are being prepared for Nuclear war, world must act now - Zelensky

Zelensky denied calling for military strikes on Russia, to prevent them using weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine, claiming that an earlier interview he granted had been mistranslated.

“You must use preventive kicks,” he said, referring to sanctions, “not attacks”.

Speaking in English at the president’s office in Kyiv, President Zelensky said to BBC: “They begin to prepare their society. That’s very dangerous.

“They are not ready to do it, to use it. But they begin to communicate. They don’t know whether they’ll use or not use it. I think it’s dangerous to even speak about it.”

Then, in Ukrainian, he said through a translator: “What we see is that Russia’s people in power like life and thus I think the risk of using nuclear weapons is not that definite as some experts say, because they understand that there is no turning back after using it, not only the history of their country, but themselves as personalities.”

The initial comment by Zelensky was denounced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as “an appeal to start yet another world war”, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it demonstrated why Russia was right to launch its operation in Ukraine.

“After that translation,” President Zelensky said, “they [the Russians] did their way, how it’s useful for them, and began to retranslate it in other directions.”

President Zelensky said action was needed now, as Russia’s threats were a “risk for the whole planet”. Moscow, he claimed, had “made a step already” by occupying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear station which President Putin is trying to turn into Russian property.

Around 500 Russian troops were at the plant, he said, although the Ukrainian staff still operate it.

“The world can stop urgently the actions of Russian occupiers,” President Zelensky said. “The world can implement the sanction package in such cases and do everything to make them leave the nuclear power plant.”

President Zelensky said Russian forces were putting up a “good enough fight”, but that Ukraine had received weapons – “I won’t say we have enough now” – and soldiers were motivated to push forward.

Amid the losses, President Putin announced the mobilisation of hundreds of thousands of reservists, which led to rare anti-war protests in Russia and to a huge exodus of military-age men.

Zelensky urged Russians to “fight for your body, rights and soul”, saying: “These mobilised kids now, they come without machine guns, armoured jackets, they are just cannon fodder…. If they don’t want to be kebab… they need to fight [for their lives].

“All Putin is afraid of is not a nuclear strike,” he said. “He’s afraid of his society, of his people.

“Because only these people can replace him, strip him of his power and give it to another person.”

Hackers Steal $100M From Binance

$100 million in cryptocurrency have been stolen from Binance by scammers.

The scammers stole from Binance, the world’s biggest exchange for cryptoassets. The firm made this known on Friday.

Company chief Changpeng Zhao wrote on Twitter that “an exploit” in the system led to extra production of the exchange’s dedicated currency, adding: “The current impact estimate is around $100m.”

“The issue is contained now. Your funds are safe. We apologise for the inconvenience and will provide further updates accordingly,” he wrote.

It is among the biggest thefts in cryptocurrency history, although it is still dwarfed by the mammoth heist of more than $500 million from the Axie Infinity blockchain game earlier this year.

Scammers are increasingly using weaknesses in “cross-chain bridges” — the means used by investors to move assets from one blockchain to another.

Blockchains are digital ledgers that store details of transactions — the biggest is bitcoin but there are thousands of others.

Changpeng Zhao wrote that the theft involved “an exploit on a cross-chain bridge, BSC Token Hub”, reassuring customers it had been fixed.

The exchange said on Reddit that the amount taken was between $100 and $110 million, adding that $7 million had already been recovered.

The Axie Infinity hack and another heist last month on crypto firm Nomad of almost $200 million also involved bridges being exploited.

Chainalysis, a crypto analysis firm, said in August that bridge exploits had accounted for around $2 billion in thefts this year already.

Elliptic, another analysis firm, said in its crime report this week that bridges “tend to accumulate large amounts of locked assets on numerous blockchains, many of which may not have advanced security or auditing cultures due to their relative obscurity”.

“This has made bridges an attractive target for cybercriminals in the past,” it added.

Over 2,000 Russian Soldiers surrender hotline (Video)

About 2000 Russian soldiers have called a ‘surrender hotline’ created by the Ukranian government since Vladimir Putin’s announcement of partial mobilisation, it has been revealed.

Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence, said 2,000 people had called the ‘I Want To Live’ hotline in recent weeks asking to voluntarily surrender.  He said the number of calls have reportedly increased vastly since the Kharkiv offensive and as Russia faces further setbacks in the war.

He told the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper: ‘The hotline has received a lot of calls from Russians who were called up recently, and even from some who haven’t even been called up yet.

‘They’re calling and asking, “What should I do if I get called up? What do I have to do, what’s the right way to surrender?”‘.

While some are new conscripts, others are soldiers weary of fighting against Ukraine.

Russian Soldiers surrendered

Yusov’s comments come after new footage emerged showing the moment Russian soldiers attached a white flag to the turret of their tank. The three-man crew then clamber out of the armoured vehicle with their hands up .

Ukraine recaptured three more villages from Russian invaders this week – putting its army within 60 miles of Kherson city, as their advance along the southern front continued.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov vowed Kyiv’s advances would be reversed, and hinted Russia might try to incorporate more Ukrainian regions beyond the four it annexed last week.
