What started as an ordinary renovation job turned into a discovery straight out of a movie.
On Monday, August 10, workers renovating the basement of a building in Sint-Gillis-lez-Dendermonde, in East Flanders, Belgium, were installing new pipes when they noticed something unusual hidden inside a wall.
Behind the wall was a concealed box — and inside it was an extraordinary treasure: gold nuggets, coins and numbered gold bars.
The initial value of the discovery is estimated at around €9 million.
The workers immediately informed the contractor, who contacted the building’s owner and the police, as required by Belgian procedure when valuable objects are unexpectedly discovered during construction work.
Local police confirmed that a significant quantity of gold had indeed been found.
But the biggest mystery is still unanswered: who does the gold belong to?
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine where the treasure came from and whether it could be connected to criminal activity in the past. Investigators will also try to identify the legitimate owner.
According to officials, the investigation could take several years.
For now, the fortune has been transferred to a secure organisation in Brussels, where it is being kept safely while investigators try to unravel its mysterious history.
