Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £120m (€140m), making the 19-year-old one of the most expensive players in football history.
Diomande has signed a seven-year contract with the Spanish giants, with the final fee potentially exceeding the £115m (€133.9m) Real Madrid agreed to pay Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023. Paris Saint-Germain had been leading the race for his signature but withdrew from negotiations after their £102.5m bid was rejected on Sunday, allowing Real Madrid to secure the highly rated forward.
If the full £120m fee is paid, Diomande would become the fourth most expensive player of all time, behind Paris Saint-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, as well as Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, who previously moved from Newcastle United in a record-breaking deal. The transfer would also make Diomande the most expensive African player in football history, surpassing the £72m Arsenal paid Lille for fellow Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pepe in 2019.
Diomande had previously attracted strong interest from Liverpool, who saw an initial £69m offer rejected in June as they searched for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah following his move to Turkish club Trabzonspor. The teenager now becomes Real Madrid’s sixth summer signing under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi.
In a farewell message to RB Leipzig supporters, Diomande thanked the fans for their “incredible support” and hinted at a possible future reunion, saying: “Who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again one day in the Champions League.” The winger described his move to Madrid as “a childhood dream come true” and expressed his gratitude to Leipzig’s management for helping complete the transfer despite him still having an existing contract with the club.
Diomande enjoyed a breakthrough season in Germany, being named Bundesliga Young Player of the Season for 2025-26 after scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in the league. He also featured in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup matches before their elimination in the round of 32 by Norway.
The winger’s rapid rise has seen him progress from an academy in the United States after leaving Ivory Coast, to Spanish club Leganes in 2025 before joining RB Leipzig later that year. During his first full season in European football, Diomande recorded 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions for Leipzig, quickly attracting attention from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Real Madrid’s decision to invest heavily in Diomande highlights their strategy of securing elite young talent with the potential to become future stars. The Ivorian has earned widespread attention for his explosive pace, dribbling ability, creativity and attacking contribution. His versatility has also been a major factor behind Madrid’s decision to pursue him, with Diomande capable of operating effectively on either flank.
From the left wing, Diomande can cut inside onto his right foot and attack the penalty area, while from the right he can use his pace and crossing ability to create opportunities for teammates. Real Madrid believe his adaptability and attacking qualities make him a strong fit for their squad, particularly as they continue to seek greater consistency in the right-wing position.
His previous partnership with Leipzig right-back Ridle Baku could also provide a useful foundation for his continued development alongside Madrid’s creative full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella. With his pace, technical ability and attacking potential, Real Madrid will hope Diomande can develop into one of the leading wingers of the next generation.
