What started as shocking headlines about a “severe diarrhea outbreak” in the United States has now become a serious health concern, after officials confirmed two deaths linked to cyclosporosis in Michigan.
The outbreak is caused by a parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis, which can trigger extreme diarrhea, fever, nausea, and dehydration. While the infection is usually treatable and rarely fatal, health officials warned that it can become dangerous, especially for people with serious underlying health conditions.
Investigators believe the source of the outbreak was contaminated fresh produce, particularly lettuce supplied from Mexico and used by Taco Bell restaurants in several U.S. states.
Health experts explained that the parasite spreads through the fecal-oral route, often through food or water contaminated with microscopic parasite eggs. It is not typically spread directly from person to person.
Reports indicate that around 18,000 people may have been infected across the U.S., with hundreds requiring hospital treatment. Michigan and Ohio are among the states reporting the highest number of cases.
