Although snakes play an important role in the environment by controlling rats, lizards, and other pests, most people would rather not find one hiding around their home. In many parts of Nigeria, especially during the rainy season, snakes are more likely to appear around houses in search of food, water, or shelter. Here are some of the places they commonly hide and what you can do to keep them away.
Snake Encounters in Nigeria
Snake sightings are fairly common in rural communities and on the outskirts of major cities, particularly in areas surrounded by bush, farmland, or undeveloped land. While most snakes are harmless, Nigeria is also home to dangerous species such as the puff adder, cobra, and black-necked spitting cobra. Encounters tend to increase during the rainy season, when flooding and overgrown vegetation drive snakes closer to human settlements.
Where Snakes Commonly Hide
Snakes are experts at finding cool, quiet places to shelter. Around many Nigerian homes, they are often found in overgrown grass, piles of firewood, abandoned building materials, and thick shrubs.
You may also spot them beneath roofing sheets, under old furniture, inside storage rooms, or among stacks of blocks and bricks. In compounds where items are left undisturbed for long periods, snakes can easily make themselves at home.
Water sources can also attract them. Areas around outdoor taps, drainage channels, water tanks, and stagnant pools often draw insects, frogs, and rodents—creating an ideal hunting ground for snakes.
Some species can even enter houses through small openings, hiding behind cupboards, inside ceiling spaces, beneath loose floorboards, or in cracks in walls.
How to Reduce the Risk
Keeping your surroundings clean is one of the most effective ways to discourage snakes. Regularly cut tall grass, trim bushes, and clear away piles of wood, debris, and unused materials where snakes may hide.
Seal holes and cracks around your home, especially near doors, windows, and foundations. Eliminate stagnant water whenever possible and keep food waste properly covered to avoid attracting rodents, which are a major food source for snakes.
When moving firewood, clearing vegetation, or handling materials that have been left outside, wear gloves and use caution. If you discover a snake on your property, avoid trying to catch or kill it yourself. Instead, keep a safe distance and contact local wildlife or emergency services if necessary.
A tidy compound and regular maintenance can greatly reduce the chances of an unwanted encounter, helping you keep your home safe and snake-free throughout the year.
