“From Snakes to Monkeys: Nigeria’s Viral ‘Animal Loot’ Stories Stir Controversy”

A bizarre and widely discussed claim in Nigeria’s political space resurfaced after reports linked missing public funds to yet another unusual explanation—this time involving monkeys.

The story follows earlier controversy from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), where an official once alleged that a “mysterious snake” swallowed N36 million generated from scratch card sales—a claim that drew national attention and skepticism.

In a similar narrative, former senator Shehu Sani reportedly told journalists that N70 million belonging to the Northern Senators Forum could not be properly accounted for after leadership changes within the group. He suggested, in a widely quoted remark, that “monkeys” were alleged to have been involved in the disappearance of the funds.

The money was said to have been part of contributions managed under the leadership transition of the Northern Senators Forum during the 8th National Assembly. Questions later emerged about its full utilization and documentation.

Sani’s comments, delivered in a strongly critical tone, referenced earlier high-profile public controversies involving animals being linked—allegedly or rhetorically—to missing funds. His remarks quickly spread on social media, fueling debate and satire across the country.

However, the claims remain framed in controversy and political dispute, with no formal investigative conclusion publicly confirming any literal involvement of animals in the disappearance of funds. The statements are widely interpreted as political commentary highlighting concerns over accountability rather than factual explanations of financial loss.
