Afriland Towers Fire Claims At Least 10 Lives, Companies Mourn Fallen Colleagues

What began as a terrifying incident of fire and smoke at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, has tragically escalated into a profound human loss. In the aftermath of the blaze that engulfed the six-storey commercial building, at least ten lives have been confirmed lost, casting a heavy shadow of grief over the city and the companies affected.

The incident, which reportedly started around 1:30 PM on Tuesday in the inverter room in the basement, quickly sent thick, choking smoke billowing through the building, triggering widespread panic among occupants. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with some individuals desperately attempting to escape through windows as emergency responders battled the rapidly spreading flames.

The Immediate Aftermath and Rising Toll

Officials from the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped. Their valiant efforts led to the rescue of at least nine persons, with five successfully revived and four initially remaining unconscious. While many managed to escape unhurt, concerns about possible casualties were raised early on.

However, the grim reality began to set in as companies housed within the tower started to confirm the devastating impact on their staff. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was the first to announce the heartbreaking news that four of its employees had died in the Wednesday evening incident.

United Capital Mourns Six Beloved Colleagues

Just hours later, the financial and investment services firm, United Capital, occupying the 3rd and 4th floors of Afriland Towers, released an exclusive and deeply moving statement. With profound grief, the company confirmed the loss of six of its dear colleagues in the tragedy. This brings the confirmed death toll from the Afriland Towers fire to a staggering ten.

In their statement, United Capital expressed the immense void left by their departed staff: “Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as provide all the support we can to them during this most difficult time.”

The company also announced plans for an “appropriate memorial service to honour their lives and mark their passing with dignity and solemnity,” thanking the emergency services for their assistance.

Lingering Questions and an Unofficial Toll

While the official confirmed death count stands at ten, believed to have been triggered by an inverter explosion, eyewitnesses and internal company sources continue to insist that “not everyone made it out alive,” raising fears that the final casualty figure could still climb higher. Attempts to get further confirmation from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

As Lagos mourns this tragic loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of robust safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and the swift implementation of rescue efforts in commercial buildings. Our thoughts remain with the families, friends, and colleagues who are grappling with this immense and sudden grief. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
