Tragedy Strikes Agatu: Four Lives Lost, Two Missing in Suspected Herder Attack

The communities of Egwuma and Ogbai in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State are once again steeped in grief following a brutal attack that has claimed the lives of four innocent individuals, with two others reported missing. This latest act of violence, suspected to be carried out by armed herders, serves as a grim and painful reminder of the persistent insecurity plaguing these regions.

According to local accounts, the horrific incident unfolded on Wednesday, leaving a trail of sorrow and fear. A local resident from Egwuma, who identified himself as Inalegwu, recounted the terrifying ordeal to a correspondent. He stated that suspected armed herders stormed both Egwuma and Ogbai communities, targeting innocent villagers.

“Some Fulani herdsmen attacked Egwuma and Ogbai communities today. They killed a woman and his son who were working on their farm, and also killed two others at the neighbouring Ogbai community,” Inalegwu tragically revealed. The cruelty of the attack is amplified by the fact that a mother and her son were targeted while simply trying to eke out a living on their farm. As of the time of his statement, the search was ongoing for two individuals who went missing during the assault.

Melvin James, the Chairman of Agatu LGA, confirmed the devastating incident, unequivocally describing it as “senseless and barbaric.” His words echo the frustration and pain felt by the affected communities. “This is an unprovoked attack on our people. It’s senseless and barbaric. How could people attack and kill a mother and her son who were working on their farm?” he lamented, highlighting the sheer brutality and lack of justification for such acts.

Chairman James further explained that the attack on Egwuma, where the mother and son were killed, and Ogbai, where the other two lives were lost, occurred while security personnel were actively on surveillance in other villages. While commending the efforts of the security operatives deployed to the area, he pointed to the debilitating challenge of poor road infrastructure within his council. This logistical hurdle often impedes rapid response, creating windows of vulnerability for communities when security teams are stretched thin across difficult terrain.

In a concerning turn, official confirmation from the state police command was not immediately available. The spokesperson for the Benue State Command, Udeme Edet, stated she was on tour and had yet to receive the report at the time of inquiry. Similarly, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, Joseph Har, also indicated he had not yet received the report and advised the correspondent to seek confirmation from the affected council chairman.

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for a more robust and sustained approach to addressing the herder-farmer crisis that continues to claim innocent lives and destabilize communities in Benue State and beyond. The tears flowing in Agatu are not just for the lives lost, but for the erosion of peace and the constant fear that grips these communities. It is imperative that all levels of government and stakeholders redouble their efforts to not only bring the perpetrators of this barbaric act to justice but also implement lasting solutions, ensuring that the lives of ordinary citizens are protected, and lasting peace is restored to the land.
