At least 24 people were killed and more than 50 injured after an explosive attack targeted a train carrying military personnel and their families in Pakistan’s troubled Baluchistan province on Sunday.
The attack took place in Quetta, the provincial capital, when a vehicle packed with explosives reportedly rammed into one of the train’s carriages as it passed through the Chaman Pattak railway signal area. The powerful blast derailed part of the train, tore open a wagon, and shattered nearby vehicles.
Military personnel were among the victims, according to local officials. Footage from the scene showed rescue teams and residents searching through wreckage for survivors while security forces secured the area.
The train had been traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, with many passengers believed to be heading home ahead of the Muslim Eid celebrations expected to begin on Tuesday.
Baluchistan, Pakistan’s largest and poorest province, has long faced unrest fueled by separatist movements accusing the central government of exploiting the region’s natural gas and mineral resources without benefiting local communities.
