Australian Woman Kills In-Laws with Poisonous Mushrooms

A jury in Victoria has convicted Erin Patterson, a 50-year-old Australian woman, of triple murder after she served a toxic mushroom lunch to her in-laws and a family aunt.

The verdict came after a prominent two-month trial that attracted global media attention and true crime enthusiasts to the quiet town of Morwell, Australia.

Patterson hosted the meal on July 29, 2023, during what seemed to be a tranquil family lunch at her residence in rural Victoria.

The attendees included Don and Gail Patterson, her estranged husband Simon’s parents, along with Heather Wilkinson, Simon’s maternal aunt.

Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, was also present and later survived.

Patterson is accused of preparing beef Wellington using death cap mushrooms, which are regarded as the most lethal mushrooms globally.

The lunch commenced with family prayers and concluded with all four guests being hospitalized.

Three of them succumbed within a week due to organ failure resulting from amatoxin poisoning.

Patterson refuted the allegations of intentionally poisoning her guests, asserting that she mistakenly used wild mushrooms she thought were safe to eat.

Nevertheless, the prosecution provided evidence that contradicted her assertions.

Investigators discovered that Patterson had researched death cap mushrooms online a year prior to the meal.

They also found a discarded food dehydrator at a nearby landfill, which tested positive for the lethal fungi.

Prosecutors contended that she deceived her guests by falsely claiming to have cancer, seeking sympathy and advice regarding how to inform her children.

Medical records verified that she had never been diagnosed with cancer.

Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor, testified in court that Patterson served the meal on four grey plates for the guests and a distinct orange plate for herself.

He could not clarify why Patterson might have wished for his demise but confirmed that he became critically ill shortly after the meal.

The jury found Patterson guilty of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas urged the public to remember the victims.
