President Buhari’s administration is helpless, Bishop Kukah tells US Congress

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Dioceses, Matthew Kukah, has told the United States Congress Commission that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is helpless.

Kukah, who addressed the congress over the rising insecurity in the country, noted that the present administration has been unable to address the security problems like it promised to do before taking over the baton of political power in 2015.

Recall that the fight against insecurity was one of the key campaign promises of Buhari/APC in the build up to the 2015 elections.

During a virtual presentation to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in Washington, DC, Kukah said Nigerians were yet to see any reasonable move towards addressing insecurity.

He also accused President Buhari of intentionally appointing more people of his ethnic stock and faith into political positions Related Posts

“The North, even the whole country, is invaded by armed bandits, kidnappers etc, who attack communities at will. The fact that the government seems to be either helpless or uninterested in dealing decisively with these people has added more confusion.

“The contradiction here is that the President has blatantly pursued nepotistic agenda and policies that show very clearly his preference for men and women of his faith.

“For the first time in Nigeria, the people heading the three arms of government – President, Senate President, Speaker and Chief Justice – are all Muslims. These are all fine gentlemen, but that is not the point. The level of rivalry between Christians and Muslims has worsened. This kind of situation has never happened before.

“The story of Leah Sharibu suggests very clearly that there is, in many instances, a relationship between the conditions in which people find themselves and their faith.

“In 2020, some of our priests in the North were killed. The extremists kidnapped our children and forcefully converted them to Muslims. What is significant here is that we are in a democracy; with weak structures and institutions. These are existential issues. So, we require practical assistance that can help us and our children,” he said.

EFCC Launches App for Online Reporting of Economic Crimes

The Economic and Financial Crimes commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, launched an App, Eagle Eye, designed to ease the process of reporting economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.

Speaking during the launch, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, described the App, being the first of its kind by any law enforcement agency in Nigeria, as a product of ingenuity by a staff of the Commission, being an application that was conceived, designed and developed by the EFCC.

According to the EFCC chairman, the initiative is a clear demonstration of his pledge on assumption of office, to run an agency that is technology-driven. “The Eagle Eye represents a new experience in information sharing and crime reporting between the public and the EFCC”, he said.

Apart from complementing the existing channels for reporting economic crimes, the unique advantage of this application, the EFCC Chairman further explained, is that it eliminates direct person-to-person interface in the reporting process and guarantees anonymity which is an added incentive to effective whistle blowing. While appealing to members of the public to take advantage of the App in bringing cases of corruption and economic crimes to the knowledge of the EFCC, Bawa said, “with the App, those who hitherto were afraid to report corruption cases to the Commission either for fear of being identified by the culprits or having their identities revealed, can now do so with the assurance of full anonymity”.

He emphasized that the Eagle Eye App, will go a long way in aiding the reportage of fraudulent activities of individuals particularly in the case of Money Laundering through Real Estate. “With the Eagle Eye, Nigerians and Non Nigerians can easily take a picture of a property suspected to have been fraudulently or corruptly acquired and report through the App seamlessly”.

He also said that as media practitioners, journalists occupy vantage positions not only in helping to bring the knowledge of the application to the public, but also making use of it and helping others to understand how it could be deployed to further the fight against economic crimes including corruption. “With the Eagle Eye, you have at your fingertips a device that will ultimately ensure that there is no hiding place for the corrupt in Nigeria”, he further explained.

On how it works, the EFCC Chairman said, Eagle Eye is a user friendly application, with features that can be navigated by any literate person. The first step, he said, is to download it to device from either the Apple of Google play store.

For those who want to key into the Whistle Blowing Policy of the Federal Government and obtain reward for reporting corruption, the EFCC Chairman said such persons should indicate in the information they are providing; just as he said that there are penalties clearly stipulated in the laws, for giving false information that could mislead the Commission.

Cocaine hidden in charcoal worth over $41 million seized by Irish Police (photos)

Cocaine disguised as charcoal with a potential value of up to $41.4 million has been seized in a joint operation between Irish and Dutch police authorities.

The drugs were found inside two shipping containers from South America that arrived at the port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, as part of what Irish investigators believe was an attempt to import up to half a ton of cocaine to Ireland, according to a press release from Ireland’s national police and security service.

According to reports,  2,000 bags of charcoal were found inside the containers but due to the use of an X-ray scanner and police sniffer dogs, some of the bags were found to contain cocaine.

Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) later confirmed that cocaine was present, but it will reportedly take a number of days and perhaps longer for FSI to extract the cocaine from the product within which it is concealed.

Arrests are expected soon as part of an ongoing investigation by the Irish National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

“This is a significant development in the Garda Síochána’s effort to disrupt and dismantle organised crime groups suspected to be involved in the importation of cocaine and other drugs into Ireland,” said assistant commissioner John O’Driscoll of the Garda Síochána, nickname of Ireland’s national police and security service.

O’Driscoll emphasized the “significant international dimension” of the operation and the “importance of cooperation within the law enforcement community within Europe and further afield.”

Michael O’Sullivan, head of the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre, which coordinates anti-drug trafficking operations by seven European Union countries including Ireland, said the seizure was “a massive seizure” that will “deal a huge blow to the organized crime group involved.”

O’Sullivan told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that Irish crime groups play a leading role in the importation of cocaine to Europe, where the market for the drug is estimated to be worth 14 billion euros ($16.6 billion).

Pastor sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a teenage girl

Justice Peter Kekemeke of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has sentenced a 29-year-old pastor, Stephen Kalu, to life imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl.

Kalu of the Adoration Ministry, Karshi, Abuja, was arraigned before the court on two counts bordering on rape. He was charged with having sexual intercourse with the girl at his residence without her consent, thereby contravening Section 31 (1) of the Child’s Right Act and punishable under Section 31 (2) of the same Act.

Delivering judgment in the case on Thursday, July 15, Justice Kekemeke said the convict admitted to sleeping with the girl several times, which resulted in a pregnancy and the birth of a girl child. The court held that although Kalu promised to marry the victim, an offense was committed and the law must take its course.

“Our society, especially this division of the court, has seen several cases of rape. It is a pathetic situation; the system must be expunged of rapists; our children need protection from our courts.

The law is already there; the same defendant committed a similar offence of rape, while on bail during the period of this case. He is a danger to our children; the defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.”the judge ruled

The rivals were set to clash for the third time in Las Vegas on 24 July, with the first fight having ended as a split draw in December 2018 before Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round in February 2020.

Fury’s third fight against his American rival will now be held on October 9

Fury said: “I want nothing more than to smash the ‘Big Dosser’ on 24 July, but I guess the beating will have to wait. Make no mistake, I will be back and better than ever. We will fight 9 October and I will knock him spark out.”

Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel added: “This is what we went to arbitration for. He just wanted what was owed to him. He remains ready to reclaim his world title on 9 October.”

Amazon sued in the US for selling dangerous products to customers

The United States has filed a lawsuit against the world’s number one online retailer, Amazon accusing the e-commerce giants of selling hazardous products to its customers.

Among the products cited in the suit are carbon monoxide detectors that fail to alarm, numerous children’s pajamas that could catch fire and nearly 400,000 hair dryers that could electrocute people if dropped in water.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC ), Amazon has to take responsibility for the safety of customers that come on their site.

The products cited are not sold directly by Amazon (AMZN) — they’re sold by third parties using Amazon’s platform. Many of those companies that sold the dangerous products cited by CPSC are foreign, and the CPSC has limited ability to force a recall of their products if they are found to be hazardous.

US sues Amazon for selling dangerous products to customers

“Today’s vote to file an administrative complaint against Amazon was a huge step forward for this small agency,” says Acting Chairman Robert Adler. “But it’s a huge step across a vast desert — we must grapple with how to deal with these massive third-party platforms more efficiently, and how best to protect the American consumers who rely on them.”

The company collected $80 billion in commissions and other payments by third-party sellers last year as third-party sellers account for more than half the physical goods sold on Amazon.

Amazon said the company takes prompt action when it is made aware of safety problems with products sold on the site, either by Amazon or third-party sellers. It said in the instances it did not recall products it was because “CPSC did not provide Amazon with enough information for us to take action and despite our requests. It said it offered CPSC to expand its capabilities to handle recalls for products.

“We are unclear as to why the CPSC has rejected that offer or why they have filed a complaint seeking to force us to take actions almost entirely duplicative of those we’ve already taken,” Amazon said in a statement, Thursday, July 15.

Peter R. de Vries, Morrocan-Dutch Crime Reporter, dies nine days after being shot in Amsterdam

Famous Dutch crime reporter, Peter R de Vries has died nine days after he was shot in Amsterdam.

Quoting a family statement, RTL News, the Dutch network De Vries regularly contributed to, said: “Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle.”

“Peter has lived by his conviction: ‘On bended knee is no way to be free,'” the family statement said.

“We are unbelievably proud of him and at the same time inconsolable.”

The statement also requested privacy for De Vries’ partner and loved ones to “process his death in peace”.

Police said De Vries was shot in Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, close to a large public square in Amsterdam.

The attack happened after the journalist, 64, made a regular appearance on a current affairs television show.

Two suspects have been detained in connection with the shooting, on 6 July.

De Vries is one of the Netherland’s best-known crime reporters and has won critical acclaim for his fearless reporting on the Dutch underworld – including the 1983 kidnap of beer magnate, Freddy Heineken.

But his investigations on the case led to him receiving threats in the past.

Two men appeared at Amsterdam District Court for a hearing last Friday and were detained in custody for another two weeks. They were arrested shortly after De Vries was wounded.

Dutch police said the shooter is suspected to be a 21-year-old Dutchman, while a 35-year-old Polish national living in the Netherlands is alleged to have driven a getaway car.

The court said in a statement that “there are currently sufficient objections and grounds to keep the two men in pre-trial detention.”

But police are still trying to establish a motive for the attack.

Spokesperson Sarah Tillart said: “We are running through several scenarios and are working with all our might to find out what the role of the suspects is and who else might be responsible.”

Amsterdam mayor, Femke Halsema, described De Vries as a “national hero” and “an unusually courageous journalist, tirelessly seeking justice.”

Dutch PM, Mark Rutte, tweeted a tribute to the journalist: “Peter R. de Vries was always dedicated, tenacious, afraid of nothing and no one. Always seeking the truth and standing up for justice.

“And that makes it all the more dramatic that he himself has now become the victim of a great injustice.”

“My mum squandered all the cash I ve’ saved while I was working abroad” – Man cries

A Kenyan man has expressed frustration at his mother following his claim to have given her a tremendous amount of money to save for him while he was working overseas.

Anthony Okamari, said he was very disappointed and angry that his mother lavished the money which he sent for her while toiling in a foreign country.

According to the young man, he had sent about N2.6 million ($6400) for her to save for him only to find out upon his return that there was only N19,000 ($46) left out of the money.

Speaking to Tuco.co.ke, e further narrated how he had secured a good job in 2018 at a construction company in Qatar through the help of his elder brother, who already lived in the Middle-Eastern country.

Anthony, who is yet to recover from the shock as he struggles daily to get his life back on track, said that while in Doha, Qatar he used to send about 83% of his earnings to his mother with the instruction that she opens a savings account and keep the money for him till he returns.

He did that for about two years, saying that his plans was to use the money which he had been sending to build a house and marry a wife when he returns home, and he was full of hope that his dreams would soon materialize.

Unfortunately when things became hard, the company where he worked closed down, letting off all their employees due to inability to pay them and Anthony’s attempt to find another job before his work permit expired was not successful.

Though he never got enough money as he would have wanted, he had no option than to return to his homeland thinking the money he has been sending for his mother to save would help him start up a new life in Kenya.

He was surprised when his mother told him that the money he has been sending was being used to solve family problems during a difficult time.

Also, he was told that a bigger percentage of the money was used to pay school fees for his sister’s children.

With no money or place to stay, he and his girlfriend were forced to move into his brother’s one-bedroom house located another town.

The young man narrated how he has been passing through difficulties with his sibling, who kept urging him to get a job, move out of the house or go back to the village.

His girlfriend was embarrassed by the news and she had to leave after his sibling sat them down to asked what their plans were in life.

Anthony now hopes one day he will be able to move on with his life and leave behind the disappointment he got from his mother, whom he trusted so much after years of toiling in a foreign country.

EURO 2020: 4 persons arrested over online racist abuse of English Black Players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho

Four people have been arrested after England footballers Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford were racially abused online following Sunday’s Euro 2020 final.

England lost to Italy on penalties in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Saka, Sancho, and Rashford all missing their penalties.

The trio were subjected to abuse online and now four people have so far been arrested as investigations into the matter continue.

In a statement issued to the PA news agency, The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) said: “Following England’s defeat against Italy on Sunday a torrent of racist comments aimed at some of the team’s black players appeared on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

“A hate crime investigation is underway by the UKFPU, with a dedicated team of investigators working their way through a large number of reports from across the country.

“So far, dozens of data applications have been submitted to social media companies and four people have been arrested by local police forces.”

Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs’ Council football policing lead, said: “The racial abuse aimed at our own players following Sunday night’s game is utterly vile and has quite rightly shocked and appalled people across the country.

“Our England team have been true role models during the tournament, conducting themselves with professionalism and dignity. I’m disgusted there are individuals out there who think it’s acceptable to direct such abhorrent abuse at them, or at anybody else.

“The UKFPU investigation is well underway and work continues to identify those responsible. We are working very closely with social media platforms, who are providing data we need to progress enquiries.

US Military Generals feared Trump would attempt a coup after the election and planned for ways to stop him, new book reveals

The number one US military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, and other top military officials feared that former President, Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election, that they informally planned for different ways to stop him, excerpts of an upcoming book from Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker reveal.

The book, “I Alone Can Fix It,” scheduled to be released next Tuesday, chronicles Trump’s final year as president, with a behind-the-scenes look at how senior administration officials and Trump’s inner circle navigated his behavior after losing the 2020 election. The authors interviewed Trump for more than two hours.

Top US Military generals feared Trump would attempt a coup after the election and planned for ways to stop him, new book reveals

The book reportedly describes how Milley and the other Joint Chiefs discussed a plan to resign, one-by-one, rather than carry out orders from Trump that they considered to be illegal, dangerous or ill-advised.

“It was a kind of Saturday Night Massacre in reverse,” Leonnig and Rucker write.

The book explains Milley’s growing concerns that moves that put Trump’s men in positions of power at the Pentagon after the November 2020 election, including the firing of Defense Secretary Mark Esper and the resignation of Attorney General William Barr, were the sign of something bad to come.

Milley spoke to friends, lawmakers and colleagues about the threat of a coup, and the Joint Chiefs chairman felt he had to be “on guard” for what might come.

“They may try, but they’re not going to f**king succeed,” Milley told his deputies, according to the authors.

“You can’t do this without the military. You can’t do this without the CIA and the FBI. We’re the guys with the guns.”

In the days leading up to January 6, Leonnig and Rucker write, Milley was worried about Trump’s call to action. “Milley told his staff that he believed Trump was stoking unrest, possibly in hopes of an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act and call out the military.”

Milley viewed Trump as “the classic authoritarian leader with nothing to lose,”

Miley also claimed to see similarities between Adolf Hitler’s rhetoric as a victim and savior and Trump’s false claims of election fraud.

“This is a Reichstag moment,” Milley told aides, according to the book. “The gospel of the Führer.” ‘This is all real, man’

Rucker and Leonnig interviewed more than 140 sources for the book, though most were given anonymity to speak candidly to reconstruct events and dialogue. Milley is quoted extensively and comes off in a positive light as someone who tried to keep democracy alive because he believed it was on the brink of collapse after receiving a warning one week after the election from an old friend.

“What they are trying to do here is overturn the government,” said the friend, who is not named, according to the authors. “This is all real, man. You are one of the few guys who are standing between us and some really bad stuff.”

Milley’s reputation took a major hit in June 2020, when he joined Trump during his controversial photo-op at St. John’s Church, after federal forces violently dispersed a peaceful crowd of social justice protesters at Lafayette Square outside the White House. The book also details how Milley tried to stop Trump from firing FBI Director Chris Wray and CIA Director Gina Haspel.

“What’s going on? Are you guys getting rid of Wray or Gina?” Milley asked Trump’s chief of staff.

“Come on chief. What the hell is going on here? What are you guys doing?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Meadows said. “Just some personnel moves.”

“Just be careful,” Milley responded.  ‘That doesn’t make any sense’

Lil Wayne’s baby mama, Nivea recounts how the US Rapper convinced her to become a housewife

One of rapper, Lil Wayne’s baby mama, Nivea has opened up about why she left the music industry.

During an interview with Kandi Burruss for her YouTube show “On That Note,” R&B singer, Nivea revealed that Lil Wayne showed an interest in her after seeing the video for her 2002 hit “Don’t Mess With My Man.” so he reached out to Nivea’s label and said he wanted to collaborate.

But after getting her contact number, he stopped talking about music and started talking about having a relationship with her.

“He said, ‘I don’t wanna do a song with you. I just want your number,’” recalled Nivea, who was working on an album at the time.

The two “just clicked” and started “falling in love,” and Wayne eventually convinced her to leave the music industry and move with him to New Orleans.

“He said, ‘Come be with me. I got you.’”

Nivea took him up on the offer and packed her bags to become his ‘housewife’.

“I’m just sitting there being a housewife,” she said.

She then reveals how Lil Wayne eventually told her he wanted to move them into an apartment without Nivea knowing it was because he wanted to move Toya Johnson and their daughter Reginae back into the house.

“We move out the house and get an apartment. I didn’t realize he did that to move Toya back in the house,” she said.

Nivea says she became pregnant with Wayne’s son, Neal, around the same time Lauren London was also pregnant with Wayne’s son, Kam. But she still stayed with him  “’cause I believed he loved me and I loved him.”

Despite all the drama, she and Lauren became “sisters.” “She really helped me through my pregnancy. We really leaned on each other,” said Nivea, adding, “And we both had a history with [Wayne] in our younger years so it was connecting in many different ways.”

Arjen Robben, retires again @ 37 after battling injuries

Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from football after a 21-year playing career.

The former Dutch international made over 300 appearances for Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, and won a league title in every country he played in.

But, the 37-year-old has struggled with injuries after coming out of retirement in 2020 and rejoining boyhood club Groningen in 2020. He endured a seven-month absence last season after making his second debut.

Robben also made 96 appearances for the Dutch national team and is the ninth-most capped Netherlands international.

In a heartfelt statement, Robben said: “I have decided to stop my active football career. A year ago I announced my comeback as a FC Groningen player. I embarked on this adventure with great energy and enthusiasm.

“I only had to deal with physical setbacks quite quickly, which prevented me from playing matches for a very long time. After a long road of trial and error I finally managed to play the last games of the season.

“Looking back on the past season, I have to come to the honest conclusion that the number of match minutes was disappointing.

“I knew in advance that this could happen, but I took up the challenge and gave everything to make it work. And not only me, everyone within the club and in my immediate environment has helped and supported me at all times.

“I am also not unaffected by the warm reactions and support from all football fans.”

After breaking onto the scene with Groningen in 2000, he moved to PSV two years later and won the Eredivisie in his first season.

Robben then joined Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, where he lifted two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and the FA Cup.

In 2007 the Dutchman transferred to Real Madrid, winning La Liga in 2008, before joining Bayern – where he would enjoy the most success – a year later.

Robben won eight Bundesliga titles and five German Cups during his time at the Allianz Arena, before choosing to announce what would be a short-lived retirement.

Along with his club success, Robben won 96 caps for the Netherlands and, although he played in the 2010 World Cup final, he was unable to lift silverware with his country.

Super TV CEO Murder: “Conspiracy has been established in the murder case” – Lagos Commissioner of Police says

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, says the command has established conspiracy in the murder of Super TV boss, Uwaifo Ataga.

The command has since arrested the prime suspect in the case, Chidinma Ojukwu.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 14 while parading criminal suspects arrested by the command Odumosu denied claims that the command is attempting to sweep the case under the carpet. In his words

“Chidinma initially was the only suspect that we arrested, but now, we have arrested additional suspects. So, members of the public should know that investigation into Chidinma’s case is progressing.

The fundamental human rights of the suspects still exist under the constitution. The insinuation that the police want to sweep the case under the carpet, that will never happen.

No matter the propaganda, we will never wither and we are not covering anybody as we have been able to establish conspiracy in the case.”

Kenny ‘Babyface’ and Wife Nicole Pantenburg splits after 7 years of marriage

American singer, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and his wife, actress Nicole Pantenburg are going their separate ways after 7 years of marraige.

In a joint statement shared with PEOPLE Wednesday, the pair announced their split. “After much thought and with great sadness, we have decided to end our marriage,” the now-former couple said.

“We continue to care and have respect for one another and share eternal love for our daughter and her well-being,” they added, referring to daughter Peyton Nicole, 12. “We ask for personal privacy for ourselves and our daughter as we navigate these new steps as a family.”

It’s unclear what led to the split between Edmonds, 62, and Pantenburg, 48.

The Grammy award-winning singer and producer began dating the actress back in 2007, and they married seven years later in 2014. At the time, the couple tied the knot in front of a group of celebrity guests including Oprah Winfrey, among others.

Pantenburg is Edmonds’ third wife, according to Hot New Hip Hop. The artiste was previously married to his first wife, Denise, and then to his second wife, Tracey Edmonds, who he met in 1990 and wed two years later.

The “Every Time I Close My Eyes” singer and his second wife welcomed two children together; sons Brandon and Dylan before divorcing 13 years later in 2005.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health deteriorating- IPOB says

The Independent People of Biafara has raised the alarm over the deteriorating health of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu at the DSS office.

Kanu was rearrested by the Federal government on June 27 and extradited to Nigeria on June 29. He was re-arraigned before an Abuja court where the DSS got an order to detain him till July 26.

A statement released by the secessionist group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, on Wednesday July 14, says Kanu has been denied access to his personal physician since his arrest which has led to his health deteriorating. The group warned that no harm should befall Kanu as the consequences would be imagined.

The statement in part reads

“We are alerting the world about this anomaly to compel the Nigeria government to grant our leader’s doctors access to see him for a thorough medical examination, bearing in mind the terrible torture he underwent at the hands of the Kenyan security agents.

We wish to unequivocally state that no harm should befall our leader as the consequences can only be better imagined. This is not a threat but a promise! Nigeria has been winning and dinning with bandits and terrorists but dehumanising and killing peaceful agitators and freedom fighters.”

Meanwhile the legal team of the secessionist group leader have approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking an order for Kanu to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services to the Kuje Correctional Centre.

In an application dated 13 July, 2021, and filed July 14, 2021, Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and other members of the team in Abuja on Wednesday, the lawyers asked for “an order directing the transfer of Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Services to the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Kuje, Abuja, where he was originally detained before he was granted bail, pending the determination of the charge.”

It also prayed the court to direct the custodian of Nnamdi Kanu to grant him access to his doctors for the purpose of carrying out a comprehensive medical examination of his health status.

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazillian President, may need surgery after battling hiccups for 10 days (photo)

Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, has been admitted to hospital following complaints of stomach pains after being plagued by a bout of hiccups for more than 10 days.

The 66-year-old was admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia early Wednesday morning, July 14.

An initial statement said doctors were examining his persistent hiccups.

However, hours later, the president’s office said Dr Antonio Luiz Macedo, the surgeon who operated on him after he was stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 presidential campaign, decided to transfer him to Sao Paulo, where he will undergo additional tests to see whether he might need emergency surgery.

The stabbing caused intestinal damage and serious internal bleeding and the president has gone through several surgeries since, some unrelated to the attack.

Shortly after news of his transfer to Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro posted on his Facebook page a photo of himself smiling with his eyes closed and lying in a hospital bed covered in sensors and cables.

“I thank everyone for their support and prayers,” Bolsonaro said in the post.

Bolsonaro’s health has been an issue for much of his presidency, after he was stabbed in the intestines on the campaign trail in 2018 and nearly died.

In recent weeks, Mr Bolsonaro has appeared to struggle with speaking on various occasions and said that he suffers from recurring hiccups following surgery on a dental implant on July 3.

During an interview with Radio Guaiba on July 7, he said: “I apologise to everyone who is listening to me, because I’ve been hiccuping for five days now.”

He suggested that some medications prescribed after dental surgery might be the cause, adding: “I have the hiccups 24 hours a day.”

EFCC warns hotels to stop hosting/aiding internet fraudsters

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned hotels across the country to stop aiding internet fraudsters.

The anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Wednesday, that owners could become criminally liable for allowing their premises to be used for cybercrime.

He noted that this is a contravention of the Advance Fee Fraud Act which on conviction could lead to a five-year term in prison without the option of a fine.

“The Commission warns hoteliers from allowing their premises and facilities to become havens for cybercrime,” he said.

The statement was in reaction to EFCC’s recent raid at a hotel in Lagos where operatives arrested at least 30 people accused of internet fraud.

The operatives gained entry into the occupants’ rooms by allegedly seizing the master cards from the management of the hotel at gunpoint.

It was also gathered that some of the occupants were naked under the duvet when the operatives gained entry into the rooms.

Uwujaren dismissed the allegations that the operatives invaded the privacy of guests and conducted illegal checks. He said EFCC was acting on verified intelligence on the activities of a suspected syndicate of internet fraudsters.

According to him, the hotel had been under surveillance, and that only the rooms of identified suspects were breached by operatives, with no break-in or violence involved.

He noted that 24 of the 30 people arrested have already confessed their involvement in cyber crimes and related activities.

“There was no incident as the hotel management served with the relevant warrant offered access to the operatives, to carry out their lawful duties,” he said.

Irina Shayk reportedly confirms she and Kanye West are "just friends" and doesn

Sources have told Page Six that Kanye West asked Irina Shayk to go to Paris for a couture show with him, but the gorgeous model and mom turned him down the offer.

“She likes him as a friend, but doesn’t want a relationship with him,” says our source, explaining that the stunner said no to the trip in order to avoid the headlines.

“She doesn’t want the association that they are dating, which is what would have run in the press if she showed up [in Paris with him],” the source continued. “It would have been another month of news saying that they are dating.”

The last time they were seen together was disembarking from a jet in the US after returning from the France trip.

Our source tells us, “She went to his birthday party as a friend. There were 50 other people there.”

The insider also says that Shayk who has a 4-year-old daughter with Bradley Cooper is happy being alone at the moment.

“She doesn’t want to be linked with anyone right now,” says the source. “She is happy being single.”

The pair have been friends for years. The catwalk star previously modeled for West’s hot brand, Yeezy, and appeared in his 2010 music video for the tune “Power.”

Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Lionel Messi to sign a new five-year deal with the Catalan club, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

The Sources also added that Messi has accepted a significant wage reduction to prolong his stay.

Before the new agreement, Messi was a free agent after his contract at Barca expired with interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City coming for his signature when he ended his 20-year relationship with Barca last summer.

The 34-year-old’s previous contract was worth over €500m and that expired at the stroke of midnight on July 1.

However, with the return of Joan Laporta as president in March, Messi grew more open to staying at Camp Nou. An official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Pastor arrested by EFCC operatives for allegedly diverting Church’s N15m for his PhD and secretly enlisting his wife on Church’s payroll

A Pastor identified as Omosebi Fred Adeola has been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before Justice A.O Otaluka of the Federal High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja on an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, abuse of office and diversion of funds to the tune of N15,619,000.

Adeola who  is a Pastor of the Adventist Church and Country Director of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency of Nigeria, allegedly diverted relief funds for himself, including paying for his PhD programme at Babcock University and illegally enlisting his wife on the church’s payroll.

Count two of the charge said being a signatory to the various bank accounts, around 13th December 2017, in Abuja, Adeola committed criminal breach of trust.

It was alleged that he first transferred N7,714,000 from the account of Adventist Development and Relief Agency of Nigeria to the account of one Ayeni Gbenga Joseph, cashed it and then converted it into personal use.

However after Adeola pleaded “not guilty” to all the charges, Prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Audu asked the court for a trial date and requested that the defendant be remanded in custody pending trial.

Defence counsel, E. G. Alala notified of a pending bail application, and prayed the court to grant his client bail as he is “a modest man of God who honoured EFCC invitations”.

Justice Otaluka granted Adeola bail in the sum of N10m and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be residents in Abuja, have a property worth N10m, provide addresses of residence, provide identity cards, passport photographs and N3 million as bonds.

The case was then adjourned until September 30, 2021, for trial.

Online Racists will be banned from football matches – Boris Johnson says

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson has announced that online racists will be banned from football matches in the wake of abuse aimed at England stars.

England trio, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford were targeted with sickening racial abuse following Sunday’s Euros final defeat after they missed penalty shootout against Italy at Wembley.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister told MPs that the government is toughening up the football banning order regime as he clashed with Keir Starmer over his stance on the national team ‘taking the knee’ before matches.

“You will not be going to the match – no ifs, no buts,” the prime minister told abusive supporters, in the Commons, after pressure from Labour to adopt the move.

The commitment came as Mr. Johnson defended Priti Patel, his home secretary, for defending fans’ right to boo England players taking the knee at the start of matches.

But Keir Starmer told him: “She’s got this wrong, the whole county knows that, his own MPs know it.”

Mr Johnson replied: ‘I repeat that I utterly condemn and abhor the racist outpourings that we saw on Sunday night, and so what we’re doing is today is taking practical steps to ensure that the football banning order regime is changed, so that if you are guilty of racist abuse online of footballers, then you will not be going to the match, no ifs, no buts, no exemptions and no excuses.’

One government insider told MailOnline that the tone from ministers on ‘taking the knee’ needed to shift because public views had.

‘The dial has moved. If you look at the polls you can see that. The England players have redefined taking the knee,’ they said.

In a stormy session of PMQs, Sir Keir said: ‘Does the Prime Minister think that it was wrong to criticise the England team’s decision to oppose racism by taking the knee as gesture politics?’

He added: ‘Can he tell the House, does he now regret failing to condemn those who booed England players for standing up to racism – yes or no?’
Mr. Johnson replied: ‘We made it absolutely clear that no-one should boo the England team…

‘In addition to changing the football banning order regime, last night I met representatives of Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and I made it absolutely clear to them that we will legislate to address this problem in the Online Harms Bill.

‘And unless they get hate and racism off their platforms they will face fines amounting to 10 percent of their global revenues – we all know they have the technology to do it.’

Alert! Three brothers died after eating “Amala” in Kwara

Three siblings have died and two others were hospitalized after they ate Amala in a community in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

According to reports, five siblings of the same parents complained of abdominal pains and started vomiting after they consumed locally prepared yam flour meal (Amala).

They were reportedly rushed to the children’s hospital in Centre Igboro but three of them were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other two survived and are responding to treatment.

The father of the children, who is a farmer, said he produced the yam flour himself and doesn’t know what exactly went wrong.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu seeks transfer from DSS custody due to mental torture

Nnamdi Kanu threatens to disgrace corrupt politicians abroad

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has asked a federal high court in Abuja to transfer him from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to Kuje prison facility.

Kanu was arrested on June 25 and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason.

After his arrest, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), said the IPOB leader was “intercepted through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”.

Justice Binta Nyako, judge presiding over Kanu’s case, had ordered that he be remanded him in DSS’ custody, pending the continuation of his trial.

But in an application filed on Wednesday, July 14, through his team of lawyers led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the IPOB leader complained that he has been allegedly denied access to his doctors.

Kanu specifically applied for an order of the trial court, “directing the transfer of the Applicant from the custody of the National Headquarters of the State Security Service to the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Kuje, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, where he was initially detained before he was granted bail, pending the determination of the charge”.

As well as, “An order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant/Applicant’s custodian, to grant access to his medical experts/doctors to carry out a comprehensive independent medical examination of the defendant/applicant’s health condition/status, while in custody.”

He alleged that he has been “subjected to mental and psychological torture” by the DSS, saying it would be in the interest of justice for the court to order his transfer to the Nigerian Correctional Service centre, which he described as “an impartial facility that has no interest whatsoever” in the outcome of his trial.

The affidavits attached to support his application stated “that an ECG examination was carried out on the defendant, and it was discovered that the defendant’s heart had been enlarged by more than 13%, posing a serious threat and danger to defendant’s life”.

“That the health personnel attending to the defendant in the custody of the State Security Service is not adequate, considering the circumstances of the defendant’s health condition,” the document reads.

“That the defendant requires the services of his medical experts as his medical records issued by the chief cardiologist of Nairobi Hospital, who has the defendant’s medical records, mainly, before the arrest/abduction of the Applicant shows a debilitating medical condition. Copies of these medical records showing the applicant’s subsisting health condition are hereby attached and marked as Exhibit MNK.

“That if the health condition of the defendant is not addressed most promptly, the defendant may die in custody, even before his trial.”

Kanu also said in the legal documents that he has limited access to his lawyer, whom he said has to go through a “rigorous process” of seeking the approval of the DSS director, which may sometimes take days before it is granted.

The document added that Kanu can only be granted fair hearing in his trial, when he is “not remanded in the custody of his accusers”.

Tony Chidi Onwurolu, declared wanted by NDLEA was seen spraying money in church lately (video)

sA video of suspected Nigerian drug baron, Tony Chidi Onwurolu spraying money in church has surfaced after he was declared wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for importing a consignment of 26.15 kilogrammes of heroin with a street value of over N6.5 billion.

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Sunday July 11, that the seizure was made at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc (SAHCO) shed of the Murray’s Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

According to him, the illicit drug had arrived in Lagos in 25 parcels from South Africa through an Air Peace Airline flight on June 30.

He said it was, however, detained for screening following reasonable suspicion of the content of the consignment. The suspected drug baron is said to be on the run after being declared wanted.

In the video shared online, Tony was seen spraying money in church as the choir sang. He subsequently knelt down for the Pastor to pray for him.

The battle for SCOAN’s leadership just began, no new leader yet

The fight for the leadership of the Synagogue Church of All Nation (SCOAN) has begun between supporters of the late Founder of the church, Prophet TB Joshua’s wife, Evelyn, and the elders of the church, who want one of the five ‘wise men’ anointed by the prophet to take over.

THISDAY checks has exclusively revealed that the newspaper’s interview with Prophet Joshua, which turned out to be his last, is being cited as evidence that he never wanted his wife to take over as the leader of the church.

The meeting to pick a successor took place yesterday but was not conclusive, as most of the elders who are foreigners kick against the idea of turning the church into a family business, an intention that is against the will of the cleric before he died.

According to an elder of the church who craved anonymity, “Mrs. Evelyn Joshua was never part of the church leadership or hierarchy. Handing over the church to her may signal a doom for the Synagogue.”

He insisted that most of the elders of the church are foreigners from all parts of the world, where succession is smooth and easy, warning that any attempt to impose Evelyn on the church may force most of them to leave the church.

Prophet Joshua in the THISDAY interview held that: “I would have loved my wife to be like me, but I cannot make her what I am, it is God. It is not possible for me to anoint her; God is the one that anoints people. So it is not possible for her to sit here at the same time; this is not a biological issue, it is inheritance from the saints, it is a partaker from the saints, therefore, I should not use anything in my biological life to stop my spiritual life.

“I am a native of Arigidi Akoko, but as for my divine nature, I am a partaker of the inheritance of the saints, therefore, it is so difficult for me. This is an apostolic ministry, it is not a ministry you read bible, go to theology school, and start preaching. No! It is purely divine. So it is so difficult for me to display my wife, she has to be ready for God. As much as you are ready for God, God will display her.”

According to the elder, it is this battle for succession that is now hindering the announcement of a new leader.

Prophet Joshua died on June 5, 2021, at the age of 57 years.

FA offers UK Black Players Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford option to pursue criminal action over racial abuse

The Football Association will offer Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford the option of pursuing criminal action against those who targeted them with sickening racial abuse following Sunday’s Euros final defeat.

The England trio missed penalty shootout against  Italy at Wembley on Sunday, triggering disgusting social media messages from online trolls.

According to Mail Online, FA is set to hold talks about how the latest instance of racial abuse and the shameful crowd who stormed Wembley.

English football’s governing body will individually speak to Saka, Sancho, and Rashford to discuss the next course of action.

The players will be asked how they want to proceed, with the possibility of criminal proceedings against the users, provided the accounts are traceable, an option.

The FA will fully back any decision to prosecute if the players decide they are willing to go through the process, though historically footballers have shown a reluctance to do so.

The organisation has already been in touch with the relevant social media companies in a bid to ascertain whether the accounts in question are traceable.

The FA are also trying to discover whether the abuse originated from accounts that are based in the United Kingdom or overseas.

July 14th: France’s Bastille Day celebrations known as their “independence day” (videos)

July 14th is a public holiday in France, commemorating the storming of the Bastille that was the symbolic start of the French Revolution. Here’s what’s planned for the fête nationale this year.

Military parade

The Bastille Day military parade along the Champs-Élysées has been a staple of the fête nationale since 1880, and it will be making a return this year.

The parade was cancelled in 2020 – the first year it hadn’t taken place since the World War II – and was replaced by a smaller ceremony at Place de la Concorde celebrating healthcare workers and others engaged in the fight against Covid.

This time, the spectacle will include 4,300 marching soldiers, 71 planes, 25 helicopters, 221 land vehicles and 200 horses of the Republican Guard. President Emmanuel Macron will be present for the parade, which is set to begin at 10am.

The general public will be allowed to follow proceedings from the Champs-Elysées, while 25,000 people will be able to watch from the seated stands, according to AFP.

Spectators will be required to show a health pass – with proof of vaccination, a recent negative test, or proof they have recovered from Covid – and will also have to wear a mask.

Numbers will be limited, but it is not possible to register for a standing place in advance, so you may need to arrive early to be sure of a place.

As part of the security measures vehicles will be denied access to a large area around the Champs-Elysées.

A number of metro stations will also be closed to the public during the day. These are: Tuileries, Concorde, Champs-Elysées Clémenceau, Franklin D.Roosevelt, Georges V, and Charles de Gaulle Etoile.

Air show

Some of the best views of the airshow, which will paint the sky the colours of the French flag at 10.30am, are to be had from the Grande Arche de la Défense. The rooftop of the Grande Arche will be open to the public and offers stunning views over the Champs-Elysées.

The same location was also set to host DJ sets from the Doppelgänger brothers and Bob Sinclair in the evening, but these have been cancelled due to the spread of Covid in the Paris region.

Champs-de-Mars concert

For the ninth consecutive year, celebrations will continue with a classical music concert on the Champ-de-Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

The concert will feature the Orchestre national de France, the Chœur and the Maîtrise de Radio France, and will be broadcast live from 9pm on France Inter and France 2.

There is no need to register – anybody is free to turn up at the Champs-de-Mars and follow the concert, but you are invited to arrive 45 minutes early to allow time for security checks.

Last year, the concert took place with a virtual audience only.

For the first time this year, the Fip radio station will also be organising a “before show” on the Champs de Mars – a 45-minute DJ set which will begin at 7:30pm.

Fireworks

Of course, no July 14th would be complete without the traditional fireworks display. Last year, crowds were banned from gathering to watch the spectacle, but this year, locals and visitors are invited to follow along from Paris’s parks.

Several towns including Lille have decided to cancel the fireworks, amid fears over the spread of the delta variant of Covid. On Sunday, local authorities in Paris confirmed the show would be going ahead, but warned that spectators will have to wear a mask while gathering on the Champ-de-Mars.

“Place du Trocadéro is the best place to witness the pyrotechnics,” the local tourism office advises.

Similar displays will illuminate the sky in towns all across France, but beware – certain local councils will require attendees to show a health pass, with an up-to-date negative Covid test or vaccination certificate, so be sure to look up the local restrictions before heading out.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, needs quick, advanced medical attention” – Lawyer Ejiofor

Ejiofor said the Nigerian government should allow his medical personnel to visit him in the custody of the Department of State Services.

Ejiofor stated these in an exclusive interview with Sahara Reporters on Tuesday morning, adding that the legal team had filed court processes in that regard to enforce that his medical doctors are allowed to see him.

The lawyer added that none of Kanu’s family members had seen him since July 18 when he was arrested by the Nigerian authorities.

Ejiofor said, “We have formally applied to the court in that regard (to have doctors visit him). We have filed a court process to allow medical experts to visit him. Whatever treatment they (the DSS) are giving to him is not enough. We want an expert that will examine him because he is still not feeling good. We want an expert that will provide him with advanced medical attention – not the type is given where he is being detained.

“The preliminary investigation conducted on his health shows that his heart has enlarged by 13 percent. So he needs quick and prompt advanced medical attention. So we have formally applied to the court for that. Let us see what happens in the coming days. So then we can pick it up from there.

“Yes, it is correct that his family members have not been able to see him. I am particularly worried. They don’t have access to him. The wife, the brothers, cousins and children have not been allowed to see him. That is why I classified his detention as solitary confinement and also being subjected to regular mental torture. If you have access to your wife and children and brothers and sisters, you will have some element of relief from your immediate family. But in this case, they are not allowed to see him. They have not been allowed to see him. It is only us, his lawyers, who visit on appointment.”

SaharaReporters had on Monday reported that the wife of Nnamdi Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, lamented that none of the family members has been able to reach him since he got into the custody of the Department of State Services.

Uchechi had added that Kanu is believed to be beaten and tortured by the security agencies in Kenya and Nigeria, giving all of them a great worry.

The IPOB leader’s wife, who is currently in the North of England, stated this in an interview on Sunday she granted to United Kingdom newspaper, The Sunday Times.

Speaking for the first time since the arrest of Kanu, the wife said, “It’s hard for me to speak. I’m extremely devastated. He has been beaten and tortured and I am scared for his life.”

She said she and the family had had no contact with him since his arrest.

Uchechi added, “I was always worried about Nnamdi. When you’re asking for freedom from dictatorship, you are a target. But when I saw what happened in Belarus and how no one did anything, I knew nowhere was safe.

“We’re just calling for a referendum exactly like Scotland did with the UK and UK did with the EU but the Nigerian government wants to exterminate our whole family. It’s a scandal and a thing of shame that Britain is not acting to secure their citizens.”

Three weeks ago, Kanu appeared in court in Abuja, hooded and charged with inciting violence. The Nigerian authorities had claimed that he was extradited to the country to continue his trial.

The lawyer representing the arrested leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has stated that his client needs “quick, advanced medical attention because he is not feeling too good.”

Man slumped and died after DNA test showed he’s not his son’s biological father

A Nigerian man is reported to have collapsed and died after reading the DNA test results which showed that he was not the biological father of his only son.

The death of the man and the alleged paternal fraud penetrated on him has gone viral on social media platforms in Nigeria.

Reports on social media revealed that the Nigerian man whose name has not been released was based abroad.

The hapless man is reported to have become suspicious about his wife’s fidelity after he stumbled on a Snapchat video showing that his wife was cheating on him with another man.

Hurt by the betrayal, he decided to carry out paternity DNA tests to find out if he was the true biological father of the couple’s son.

Unfortunately, for him, the results came out negative. He is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he died.

The man’s death has sparked a heated debate on Nigerian social media platforms about the issues of paternity fraud and DNA tests. Some have called on DNA tests to become mandatory for all children at birth.

However, others are arguing that people should only carry out DNA tests when they are able to handle the results if they are not favourable.

Others also called on men to avoid subjecting themselves to unnecessary anguish by demanding tests whose results they may not be able to live with.

“Factory-fitted tinted glasses are exempted from getting police permit”- IGP says

The Inspector-General of Police (IG) Usman Alkali Baba has said vehicles with factory-fitted tinted glasses are exempted from getting police permit.

The police boss gave the clarification during a virtual interaction with selected journalists on Monday, July 12.

“Factory-fitted tinted glasses are not affected. They are not the ones we are quarreling about because you can see through most of the factory-fitted glasses. If you want them to open, you can then ask them to open. We are talking about the ones you cannot even identify, whether there’s someone inside or not.”he said

Asked what the police were doing to ensure that operatives enforcing these laws understood the directive, Baba said the force is making efforts to educate the cops on the policy for effective implementation.

He also said plans were underway for the police to have a centralized database as well as other security agencies that would aid crime prevention and control.

As part of measures to combat crime in the country, the police boss announced the suspension of the issuance of tinted-glass permits across the country.

India: 3-headed baby hailed as incarnation of God as pilgrims travel long distances to pay homage

A baby born with three heads has attracted pilgrims who refer to the child as an incarnation of God.

Strangers in India have reportedly been making pilgrimages to see the infant since its birth in Uttar Pradesh was announced on July 12.

The mother named only as Ragini is understood to have been through a “normal” and healthy pregnancy which made the birth of a three-headed child all the more shocking.

In photos and videos, the infant is seen with two extra heads with hair directly attached to the back of its “normal” head.

Both mother and child are reportedly doing well and have left the hospital and returned home.

However, they are said to be upset after being inundated with visits from people who are desperate to see the newborn baby.

Locals are reportedly calling it an “incarnation of God” and people are travelling miles to reach the home so that they can bless the baby.

A video of a toddler being thrown to safety from the top of a burning building in South Africa has gone viral.

The building went up in flames after looters set fire to the shops below. Unfortunately, the fire spread to the top of the building while people were stuck in the building.

A woman had to throw the child from the top of the building into the waiting arms of a group that had gathered to catch the child.

At least 45 people have been killed in the clashes sparked by the jailing of former South African president, Jacob Zuma.

DSS arrests Israeli filmmakers for shooting a documentary in Ogidi Village

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has accused the Nigerian police of arresting three Israelis who were shooting a documentary in southeast Nigeria.

Times of Israel reported that a Zionist activist, Rudy Rochman, filmmaker Noam Leibman and French-Israeli Journalist E. David Benaym were allegedly arrested last week when they visited Ogidi village, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State to shoot a documentary.

The Israelis were in Nigeria to film “We Were Never Lost,” a documentary exploring Jewish communities in African countries such as Kenya, Madagascar, Uganda, and Nigeria. They took off from Ben Gurion Airport on July 5 and landed in Nigeria the next day.

Locals said the SSS operatives allegedly interrogated and detained the crew at a synagogue during Friday night services in Ogidi, before taking them to Abuja.

Last Thursday, a post shared on “We Were Never Lost” Facebook page read;

“We Were Never Lost is a project working to reconnect unknown, disconnected and re-emerging Jewish communities around the world. Our first season is set in Africa and we are currently filming our first episode on the Jews of Nigeria. There are many Jews in Nigeria, Igbos included and we are here only to help the local practicing and observing Jewish communities, to provide them with resources, and to document their lives, experiences and aspirations.

“We do not take any position on political movements as we are not here as politicians nor as a part of any governmental delegations.

“After days of being here our team has experienced and met some of the most amazing humans beings (Jews) in the world and we can’t wait to share their story.

“We are here to spread light. Stay tuned.”

Peoples Gazette reported that Nigeria’s foreign ministry confirmed the arrest on Tuesday July 13 and noted that the Israeli Embassy in Abuja was following up on the case.

Sahara Reporters also reported that last week, the “We Were Never Lost” group met with Igbo leader, Eze Chukwuemeka Eri and presented him with a framed Shiviti made in Jerusalem.

Rochman also presented another Igbo community with a Torah scroll whose cover was designed by British-Israeli street artist Solomon Souza.

Do you know that over 100,000 England fans sign Euro 2020 ‘rematch’ petition?

Over 100,000 English fans have signed a petition calling for England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy to be replayed.

England lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley on Sunday evening July 11.

After the match loss,  some fans were left incensed and have now launched a change.org petition to asked that the match be replayed.

The petition was started on the grounds that it apparently “was not fair at all”, with an image of Giorgio Chiellini’s now infamous foul on Saka – which the Italian defender was booked for – used to highlight this apparent unfairness.

It is added that there were “pushes, pulls and kicks” from the victorious Italians, who – it is said – should have had “a red card for their gameplay” with the match replayed with a “non-biased” referee, presumably to give England a better chance of winning.

As at Tuesday July 13, over 100,000 people had signed the petition.

Chicago Rapper gunned down with 64 bullets moments after being released from jail

Londre Sylvester, a Chicago rapper who goes by the name “KTS Dre,” was killed by a barrage of bullets just moments after he walked out of jail.

According to police, Sylvester was shot at least 64 times outside the Cook County Jail in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported. Sylvester had been fitted with an ankle monitor and was released after being jailed for violating the conditions of his release on a 2020 gun charge, the Tribune said. He posted $5,000 bail Friday, the newspaper said.

He was walking with a 60-year-old woman to a waiting vehicle, when multiple suspects suddenly emerged from two other vehicles and opened fire on Sylvester, WMAQ reported. Despite the number of shots fired, Sylvester was the only fatality in the apparent ambush, though the 60-year-old and another woman were injured.

The second woman is an activist who assists people newly released from prison, and the 60-year-old posted Sylvester’s bail, CWB Chicago reported.

The 31-year-old rapper was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital around 9 p.m., according to CWB.

The letters “KTS” in Sylvester’s stage name stand for “kill to survive,” CWB reported, which he had tattooed on his neck along with a target design.

Suspects fled in their vehicles, and the killing is still under investigation, outlets reported.

Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Ghana First Lady, offers to refund allowances received from 2017 till date

Ghana’s First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo has offered to refund all the allowances she has received since the president assumed office in 2017.

She also said that she would not accept a salary that was recently approved by the country’s parliament. She added that she did not request to be paid and had only received that which existed and attached to her status, albeit informally.

Her decision came following a public outcry over salaries.

Last week, Ghanaians expressed outrage at the decision by MPs to approve salaries for the wives of the president and vice-president for the supportive role they play.

They were set to receive about $3,500 a month, the same amount as cabinet ministers following a 2019 recommendation by a parliamentary committee.

Ghanaians questioned the capacity in which such an allocation would be made to the said spouses.

The First Lady then responded on Monday, July 12, describing some of the reactions from Ghanaians as distasteful and seeking to portray her as “a venal, self-serving and self-centred woman” who is insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Office of the First Lady, Mrs Akufo-Addo indicated that her decision to refuse the offer is a personal one “without prejudice to the rights of others and does not undermine the propriety of the process undertaken by Parliament.”

The First Lady’s statement reads in part: “The public discussion has been laced with some extremely negative opinions, in some cases, which she finds distasteful, seeking to portray her as a venal, self-serving and self-centred woman, who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.

“In view of this, the First Lady, in consultation with the President of the Republic, has decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GHC 899,097.84.”

The statement continued: “The First Lady will continue to support the President, as she has always done, in the execution of the mandate entrusted to him by the good people of Ghana.”

Bill Gates blames himself as he opens up about divorce

Bill Gates blamed himself for “messing up” as he opened up about his messy divorce.

The billionaire spoke last week at the exclusive Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference, widely known as “summer camp for billionaires”, in Sun Valley, Idaho.

One attendee at the camp said the Microsoft founder was “emotional” and on the verge of tears as he spoke about his divorce.

During an “off the record”  Q&A session that followed Gates’ talk on climate change, CNBC host Becky Quick asked the billionaire about his divorce from Melinda, his wife of 27 years, and the future of the Gates Foundation.

Bill and Melinda Gates

“He fessed up to messing up,” an attendee said. “He basically referred to the fact that it [the divorce] was his fault.”

“He did seem a bit emotional about it,” the attendee added. “He might have been on the verge of tears.”

The attendee said Bill Gates did not use the word “affair” when discussing the end of his marriage.

Another attendee described Bill Gates’ confession as “very moving.”

The “summer camp for billionaires” was attended by some of the most powerful people in sports, technology and media.

Taliban Rebels kill 22 Afghan Special forces after US forces left Afghanistan

Videos have emerged showing the Taliban militant group killing Afghanistan special forces.

The killings allegedly happened on June 16 in the town of Dawlat Abad by the Taliban in Faryab province, close to Afghanistan’s border with Turkmenistan.

Across Afghanistan, tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced amid a surge in fighting that followed US President Joe Biden’s announcement that all US troops will be withdrawn from the country by September 11.

Since then, the Talibans claim to have taken control of nearly 200 districts across Afghanistan — mostly in the north and north-west. In many areas, they have met little resistance.

Newly uploaded videos show the commandos’ bodies strewn across an outdoor market. After a fierce battle to hold the town,  the commandos had run out of ammunition and were surrounded by the Taliban fighters, witnesses said.

In the video, the words ring out: “Surrender, commandos, surrender.” Several men emerge from a building; they are clearly unarmed. Gunfire then erupts. At least a dozen men are seen shot to death amid cries of “Allahu Akhbar” — God is Great.

In one video, about 45 seconds long, a bystander can be heard saying in Pashto, the local language: “Don’t shoot them, don’t shoot them, I beg you don’t shoot them.” The bystander then asks: “How are you Pashtun killing Afghans?” The Pashtuns are the main ethnic group in Afghanistan.

At the end of the video, another voice off-camera says: “Take everything off them.”

In another video, a man can be heard saying: “Open his body armor.” One fighter can be seen taking equipment off the body of one of the commandos.

The Red Cross has now confirmed the bodies of 22 commandos were retrieved.

The Taliban in response, has now posted a video showing “the Washington guards, a CIA specially trained special commando who had been pursuing the Taliban in Dawlat Abad, Faryab, commandos being captured alive by the Taliban, disarmed and handcuffed. The Taliban claimed it was holding the 24 commandos hostage but the Afghan Ministry of Defense has denied the Taliban’s claims saying its forces were killed.

An eyewitness says the commandos arrived in the town with several tanks but ran out of ammunition after two hours of fighting and received no support from the air.

“The commandos were surrounded by the Taliban. Then they brought them into the middle of the street and shot them all,” the witness said.

In a statement Monday, July 12, the Taliban said “thousands of soldiers” had “defected and embraced the open arms of the Islamic Emirate,” which it claims is the true leadership of the Afghan people.

“Nearly two hundred districts were cleansed from their malicious presence,” the statement added.

France Regulator fines Google £425million for failing to negotiate ‘in good faith’ with media companies over the use of their content

France has fined Google £425million for failing to negotiate ‘in good faith’ with media companies over the use of their content under EU copyright rules.

It is ‘the biggest ever fine’ imposed by the Competition Authority for a company’s failure to adhere to one of its rulings, the agency’s chief Isabelle De Silva said.

The long-running legal row focuses on claims Google has been showing articles, pictures, and videos produced by media groups when displaying search results without adequate compensation.

In a ruling published on its website, the Competition Authority also ordered the US internet giant to present media publishers with ‘an offer of remuneration for the current use of their copyrighted content’, or risk paying additional damages of up to £750,000 a day.

A Google spokesperson said in a statement to AFP that the company was ‘very disappointed’ by the decision.

‘We have acted in good faith during the entire negotiation period. This fine does not reflect the efforts put in place, nor the reality of the use of news content on our platform,’ the company insisted.

‘This decision is mainly about negotiations that took place between May and September 2020. Since then, we have continued to work with publishers and news agencies to find common ground.’

In April 2020, the French competition authority ordered Google to negotiate ‘in good faith’ with media groups after it refused to comply with a new EU law governing digital copyright.

This was to ensure that news publishers are compensated when their work is shown on websites, search engines, and social media platforms.

But last September, news publishers including Agence France-Presse (AFP) filed a complaint with regulators, saying Google was refusing to move forward on paying to display content in web searches.

The Police might use a ‘lie detector’ as Chidinma Ojukwu denies killing Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga

A lie detector might be deployed by the Lagos state police command after 21-year-old Chidinma Ojukwu denied killing SuperTV CEO, Usifo Ataga, days after admitting to the crime several times on camera.

Recall that in a trending video interview with Crime Fighters, the University of Lagos claimed that she had nothing to do with the murder but only found Ataga’s corpse after returning to the service apartment where both of them had lodged at Lekki, Lagos State.

Ojukwu said;

“Before I was leaving, he stood up to lock the door, but when I got in, I was knocking, and when there was no answer, I opened and the door was already opened, as it wasn’t locked; the duvet and pillow were on the floor.

“The couch was facing the door and the bed was stained with blood already. The floor where he was was filled with blood and then music and TV were on. The room was already disarranged like someone broke in, then I saw him on the floor.

“I didn’t know what to do, so I took my things with his things and left. I was afraid; I didn’t know if I had raised the alarm, they would have arrested me for doing it because I and him were just the only people in the room.

“I just left; I was packing my things to leave, then I noticed that my clothes were stained, so I changed to another. I took the bag that contained his ID and documents like bank statements. So, I just packed them and put them into the nylon and left.

“I just did it; it is not like I had something to do with his death. I never had anything to do with his death.”

A senior police officer who reacted to Chidinma Ojukwu’s “new story”, told PUNCH Metro that a lie detector could be deployed to test if her latest claim was true or not.

The officer said;

“It appears that her lawyers or relatives are teaching her; but this is different from our investigation. This is a fake angle and she cannot dismiss convincing evidence that is already available and recorded, which she herself demonstrated.

“So, this means she is a two-faced person; she tells lies and when the investigation gets to a top level, they will use a lie detector to know whether she is telling the truth or not.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu also said that the UNILAG student is exhibiting traits of an active criminal with her new confession.

The police chief also recalled how she was recorded the night she was arrested and the state CIID.

Odumosu said;

“That is the trait of an active criminal; she was here, we recorded her. The night she was arrested, we recorded her at the state CIID, even the lady that rented the place to her, we recorded her and we have all that. If she now has an afterthought, investigation will prove that.”

Fire guts Iraqi hospital used for treating Covid-19 patients, 41 dead (photos)

At least 41 people have been killed in a hospital fire in the southeastern Iraqi city of Nasiriya, with at least 5 people critically injured.

According to Dr. Ammar al-Zamili, the spokesperson for the local health department, the fire on Monday night, July 12, is believed to have started after oxygen tanks exploded in an ICU treating Covid-19 patients, al-Zamili said.

“The civil defense teams managed to control and put out the major fire that broke out at al-Hussein hospital in the city with the help of health workers and neighborhood volunteers,” al-Zamili told CNN.

Health officials could not say how many people were inside the building when the fire broke out but said an evacuation operation is underway. Al-Hussein Hospital was set up to treat Covid-19 patients at the start of the pandemic and has quarantine stations on site.

In April, at least 82 people were killed in a huge fire at a Covid-19 hospital in Baghdad. That fire had started after oxygen tanks exploded in the Covid-19 ICU.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi will hold an emergency meeting with a number of ministers and security commanders “to find out the causes and repercussions” of the deadly fire, the PM’s office said Tuesday morning, July 13.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi tweeted that the fire shows a failure to protect lives “and it is time to put an end to this catastrophic failure, and Parliament will shift today’s session to examine options regarding what happened.”
