The Uk has sanctioned Teodoro Obiang Mangue, the son of Equatorial Guinea’s president for misappropriating millions of dollars spent on luxury mansions, private jets and a $275,000 glove worn by Michael Jackson.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Teodoro Obiang Mangue, who is also vice president of Equatorial Guinea, had participated in “corrupt contracting arrangements and soliciting bribes, to fund a lavish lifestyle inconsistent with his official salary as a government minister.”

In an unusual move, the UK said Obiang had bought a $100 million mansion in Paris, a $38 million private jet, a luxury yacht, and dozens of luxury vehicles including Ferraris, Bentleys and Aston Martins. and he also bought “a collection of Michael Jackson memorabilia including a $275,000 crystal-covered glove that the musician wore during his time.

It’s not the first time foreign governments are cracking down on Obiang. In 2017, Obiang was convicted for corruption by a French court and handed a three-year suspended jail term after prosecutors accused him of embezzlement of public funds and money laundering.

In 2018, Brazilian police seized millions of dollars in cash, including a set of luxury watches from a delegation traveling with the wealthy Central African ruler following a search on their private aircraft in Sao Paulo.

The country grew rich in the past few decades due to the exploitation of its oil reserves, but more than 76% of the population live in poverty, according to the World Bank.

Kumar, who is the only Indian to win two individual Olympic medals, has pleaded innocent to the charges.

A television has been arranged in the common area of Tihar jail in New Delhi after a request by Kumar’s lawyer to prison authorities.

“We have allowed Sushil to watch television in the common area of his ward along with others,” Sandeep Goel, director general of Delhi prisons, told reporters.

Tokyo Olympics 2020: The Opening Ceremony director sacked for Holocaust joke

Tokyo Olympics organisers have fired the opening ceremony director after historical footage emerged of Kentaro Kobayashi making jokes about the Holocaust.

A clip was widely shared on Japanese social media on Wednesday, July 21, showing the comedian Kobayashi in a 1998 TV skit which included the line “Let’s play Holocaust”, and there were strong calls for his dismissal.

The Jewish human rights organisation Simon Wiesenthal Center released a statement condemning the jokes, saying: “Any person, no matter how creative, does not have the right to mock the victims of the Nazi genocide … any association of this person to the Tokyo Olympics would insult the memory of six million Jews.”

Kobayashi’s sacking comes one day before the start of the opening ceremony, which had earlier this week lost its musical composer Keigo Oyamada, who resigned after it emerged he had bullied classmates and boasted about it in a magazine interview.

The Olympics minister Seiko Hashimoto said: “We’re currently investigating how to conduct tomorrow’s opening ceremony.”

There have been numerous similar scandals among high-ranking officials. In March the Olympics’ creative chief Hiroshi Sasaki was forced to resign after calling female comedian Naomi Watanabe an “Olympig” and suggesting she could wear pig ears at the opening ceremony.

In February the head of the Games’ organising committee Yoshiro Mori resigned after making sexist comments.

The 83-year-old was quoted as saying women talk too much and that meetings with multiple female directors would “take a lot of time”. Around 400 people withdrew from the Olympic volunteer programme after the comments were made.

The Games will officially begin with the opening ceremony at Tokyo’s National Stadium on Friday with no fans after spectators were banned due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

10 pirates sentenced to 12 years in jail for hijacking Chinese ship

10 pirates have been handed a twelve year jail senetence each for hijacking a Chinese fishing vessel, FV Hai Lu Feng II, in May 2020.

The convicts said to be residents in Nigeria were identified as Frank Abaka, Jude Ebaragha, Shina Alolo, Joshua Iwiki, David Akinseye, Ahmed Toyin, Shobajo Saheed, Adekole Philip, Matthew Masi, and Bright Agbedeyi.

They pleaded “not guilty” after being arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on the hijacking of the vessel in international waters off the coast of Cote D’Ivoire.

The convicts who were first arraigned by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) on July 13, 2020 were accused of “committing an illegal act of violence against the crew on board FV Hai Lu Feng II belonging to Haina Fishing Company by putting them in fear in order to take control of the vessel while armed with  weapons”.

The government which said their action violated Section 3 of the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019, punishable under Section 2 of the same Act, urged the court to use the case to send a strong message to pirates that Nigeria would not condone such criminal activities which had huge implications for the country.

Ruling on the case, Justice Ayokunle Faji said their actions affect the well-being of all Nigerians also ordered each pirate to pay a fine of N1million each.

Faji said;

“I agree with the prosecution counsel, Labaran Magaji that the prosecution has proved the essential ingredients of the offence committed by each of the defendants; the defendants conspired to commit the illegal act.

“All the defendants acted in hijacking the ship to achieve their common goal.

“Consequently I find each of the defendants guilty as charged on all the counts.

“Each defendant is hereby sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

“In addition, the defendants should pay a fine of N1million each.

“The offence committed by the defendants affects the wellbeing of Nigerians and our image in the diaspora.

“The naira sum, dollars, and various currencies recovered from the defendants by the Nigerian Navy are hereby forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

Christian Eriksen will NOT play football again following his cardiac arrest

The Italian Football Association has confirmed that Christian Eriksen will not be allowed to play for Inter Milan again unless the defibrillator installed after his cardiac arrest while on Denmark duty is removed.

The 29-year-old collapsed during his country’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland on June 12 and required urgent CPR treatment from pitch-side medics. Eriksen was brought back to life on the pitch but the remainder of his football career remains in doubt.

It was confirmed after his cardiac arrest that Eriksen now has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) inserted in his chest to regulate any further disturbances in his heartbeat.

Eriksen plays club football for Inter Milan in Italy, a country that bans players from competing if they have any significant heart abnormalities.

Francesco Braconaro, a member of the Italian FA’s technical-scientific committee, revealed the Danish footballer must have the defibrillator removed to play in Italian football again, as it will show he has no further heart problems.

Braconaro told Radio Kiss Kiss: ‘Christian Eriksen cannot be given the all-clear to play in Italy.

‘If the player has the defibrillator removed, therefore confirming the pathology can be resolved, then he can return to play for Inter.’

Nigerian Govt. denies blocking Nigerians from using Twitter

The Federal Government has denied claims that it has stopped Nigerians from using the microblogging site, Twitter.

Punch reports that the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Federal Government made the denial in a counter-affidavit they deposed to in response to an originating motion filed by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.

The Federal government on June 4 2021, announced the indefinite suspension of the operations of Twitter in Nigeria. The government suspended the site operations days after it deleted a Tweet from President Buhari’s handle in which he made reference to the civil war which many found offensive. The Attorney General had released a statement threatening to prosecute Nigerians still using the platform via VPN while the National Broadcasting Commission ordered all radio and television stations to stop using Twitter or picking content from the platform.

Opposed to the move by the Federal government, HumanRights lawyer, Inihebe Effiong, dragged the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed and the Federal government before the court. In a fundamental human rights suit marked FHC/L/CS/542/2021, Inihebe asked the court to amongst other things grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further suspending, deactivating, or banning the operation and accessibility of Twitter or any other social media service in Nigeria because the act was in violation of his rights.

Effiong asked the court to declare as illegal the ‘threat of criminal prosecution by Malami and Lai Mohammed against Nigerians who violate the suspension or ban of Twitter, despite the absence of any written law.’

In an affidavit deposed to by Mr. Ilop Lawrence on behalf of the Federal Government and Malami, it was stated that the suspension of Twitter was not an abuse of human rights because Nigerians were still using Twitter despite the suspension. The government told the court that Nigerians are still free to use platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Tiktok and others. The Federal Government also denied knowledge of Twitter deleting Buhari’s tweet on the Biafra civil which offended many Nigerians.

It said Twitter had made its platform accessible to elements like Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra; and had supported the #EndSARS protests of October 2020 which was later hijacked by hoodlums. The government further stated that Nigerians should direct their anger at Twitter and not the government because Twitter would not have been suspended if it complied with Nigeria’s laws. It told the court that the Twitter suspension would be lifted once the platform registers with the NBC and the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The affidavits deposed by the Federal government reads in part

“The applicant (Effiong) and the class he seeks to represent can still operate those Twitter accounts from anywhere in the world and even from Nigeria. Nigerians are still tweeting, even at this moment as the ban on Twitter is not aimed at intimidating Nigerians or an infringement on the rights of Nigerians to express their opinion.

The respondents (Federal Government and AGF) have never stopped the applicant (Effiong) and the class of persons he seeks to represent from voicing their opinions to access government information and offer criticism where necessary.”

“I will stand surety for Kanu again” – Senator Abaribe

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinaya Abaribe, has said given the opportunity, he will still stand as surety for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu in court.

Recall that Abaribe, Immanuel El-Shalom, a Jewish high priest, and Tochukwu Uchendu, a chartered accountant, stood surety for Kanu when he was granted bail on April 27th 2017 after spending over a year in detention. Kanu however went underground after the military invasion of his home in Abia state in September 2017. The courts revoked Kanu’s bail and then threatened Abaribe with a jail term if he fails to produce Kanu.

Kanu was however rearrested in Kenya on June 27 and extradited to Nigeria on June 29.

Speaking in an interview with TVC on Wednesday, July 21, the Senator said he would not hesitate to stand as a surety for Kanu again. He explained that he stood surety for Kanu when the IPOB leader was arraigned because it was a condition imposed by the court.

According to him, the court ordered that one of the sureties must be a Senator and as the Chairman of the Southeast Senators Caucus then, he had to offer himself as the surety.

“He’s our son. He’s from our state (Abia). He (Kanu) said it himself that he ran for his dear life.

There is a difference between jumping bail and escaping for your life. I went back to court and deposed that on the basis of the principle of ‘last seen’, that the last people seen with him were soldiers of the Nigerian army who were invading his father’s residence.

The judge ultimately ruled that she was revoking bail and issued a warrant of arrest, thereby removing us from the responsibility of providing him. A lot of people did not understand” he said

Abaribe said he did not feel betrayed that Kanu left the country, saying he ran for his life.

He went on to request that the Queen allows Lilibet to be christened at her Church in England because Lilibet deserves the same rights as other royals who are christened at the Queen’s church. He added that Lilibet shouldn’t be punished because of the actions of her parents.

He said during an interview with Fox News from his Rosarito, Mexico, home: “I’m hoping Her Majesty the Queen and the people in England will stop and think about the mistakes and bad behavior of their parents.”

He continued: “I will be petitioning the California courts for the right to see my grandchildren in the very near future.”

The former Hollywood lighting director also said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to ask Her Majesty the Queen, the British family, the royal family, to allow Lily to receive her baptism and first christening at the Queen’s church.

“We shouldn’t be punishing her for Megan and Harry’s bad behavior,” he blasted at his daughter and son-in-law.

“Archie and Lily are small children, they are not politics, they’re not pawns, not part of the game.

“And they’re also Royals. They’re also entitled to the same rights as any other royal.”

Meghan’s dad also revealed that he would “welcome” Queen Elizabeth and the Royals’ to his home.

He said: “Of course they would be invited to my home at any time.”

Authorities said violence erupted on Wednesday afternoon at the country’s two largest prisons Litoral Penitentiary in the port city of Guayaquil and the Latacunga prison in the central Cotopaxi region.

Police contained the rioting and regained control of the two sites after nine officers and 59 inmates were injured, according to officials.

In Cotopaxi, “high-caliber firearms” and explosives were used during the riots, Governor Oswaldo Coronel said.

Some 78 prisoners were recaptured following an escape attempt at Latacunga, police said.

Alexandra Vela, a government minister, said a police officer was sexually assaulted amid the chaos.

Gustavo Larrea, a former interior minister, said clashes were between crime groups linked to drug trafficking. Larrea said the gangs had “relative control” in the prisons and sought to control illegal operations on the outside.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua fight slated for 25th September, 2021 @ Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Anthony Joshua will defend his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight world titles against mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Saturday, September 25.

The British unified champion was hoping to fight for the final belt in an undisputed clash with WBC champ Tyson Fury this summer, but plans collapsed last month.

Following Deontay Wilder’s arbitration victory, the ‘Gypsy King’ instead will now face him again on October 9. As a result, the WBO ordered AJ to defend against his overdue mandatory Usyk.

“The date is set and we are fully locked in,” said Joshua. “September 25, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, I put it all on the line again and it’s time to defend my crown. We are two Olympic gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges.

“The stadium is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe-inspiring venue. The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.”

Usyk said: “The path will be mastered by the walking one.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports, said: “Anthony Joshua is back, live on Sky Sports Box Office, in an epic evening of world heavyweight title action on September 25.

“We’ve followed Joshua’s enthralling journey since the very start – and now Ukraine’s pound-for-pound star Usyk stands in the way of AJ’s ultimate ambition of becoming an undisputed world champion.

“The unbeaten Usyk is returning to the city where he struck gold at the same Olympic Games as AJ and we know him well from that dramatic win over Tony Bellew and a breathless battle with Derek Chisora.

“I couldn’t be more delighted after working for two years to secure a spectacular heavyweight showdown at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a stunning backdrop for fight fans as Joshua vs Usyk lights up London.”

Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, said: “This is a huge occasion for Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Anthony Joshua is an icon in the world of sport and to have him fight here in London N17, against a top opponent in Oleksandr Usyk, will be amazing for the area of Tottenham.

“This event will once again showcase the stadium’s ability to take the hosting of world-class sporting occasions to the next level – we cannot wait for September 25.”

Mr Jerome, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene on Brixton High Street close to the tube station at around 8.45pm.

Police said a man was arrested nearby on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A 24-year-old passer-by said: “I didn’t see the stabbing but I saw him take his last breaths.

“I saw him on the floor, there were loads of police officers around him.

“People around said they were making a music video and an argument broke out out of nowhere and a man produced a machete and stabbed this guy multiple times.

“A girl was slashed as well. They said it was the victim’s girlfriend when she tried to intervene.”

The man was immediately provided first aid but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another onlooker told the BBC the incident had involved a number of high-end cars, including a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a black Range Rover, and two quad bikes.

They said: ‘A convoy of cars and quad bikes suddenly turned on one another, leading to one man being stabbed and others involved in a fist fight before running off on foot and by vehicle.

‘The front of the convoy was a black Range Rover, which had a driver that wore a balaclava, and men sitting in the boot of the car, with the boot door open.

The Metropolitan Police said yesterday evening: ‘(The victim’s) next of kin have been informed. Formal identification has not taken place and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.’

Recall that a pastor named Peter Godwin alleged that he and over 40 other pastors were sacked in Ekiti state for not generating enough income from their branches (read here).

Another pastor called InChristed Michael also took to Facebook to claim he too is a “victim” and added that many more pastors were fired in other states (read here).

Reacting, David Oyedepo said the pastors were sacked because they were blatant failures who weren’t bearing fruits.

He said: “I learnt some fellow said we asked them to go because they’re not bringing income.

“We asked you to go because you’re unfruitful. Unfruitful blatant failure… doing what there?

“We have no patient with failure here.”

As for those on social media calling his church out for the sack, he said they were all silent when he employed pastors on a large scale.

“When we employed 7000 pastors at once social media was dead,”Oyedepo said.

He added: “We have more employees in this organization than most states in Nigeria. No one is owed a dime salary and we don’t borrow, we don’t beg. Ask our bank whether we take overdraft.

“We’re covenant bond people, walking in the light of God’s word, enjoying an open heaven.

“We have fully delivered the first phase of 1,000 plus buildings in the rural churches. None of those churches can generate that fund in the next 30 years.

“No, we’re hunting after souls. Money? Nonsense. We’ve never lacked it and yet we’ve never prayed for it.”

PSG officially signs Georginio Wijnaldum as their latest star from Liverpool (photo)

Paris Saint-Germain have officially unveiled Georginio Wijnaldum as their latest summer signing after the midfielder left Liverpool as a free agent.

The Holland international was unveiled on Wednesday and was seen holding the club’s jersey and smiling for the cameras before carrying out an interview with PSG TV.

PSG were able to beat off competition from Barcelona to snap up the in-demand Wijnaldum, who put pen to paper on a three-year deal until 2024.

1 95

‘I was at the end of my contract, and several clubs contacted me,’ Wijnaldum said.

‘When Paris came to meet me, everything went very well, and I quickly wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain.

‘Mauricio Pochettino had already approached me at the time, to sign me for Tottenham, so I had already talked a lot with him.

‘The whole club made me feel that they really wanted me, that played a big part in my decision.’

Wijnaldum left Liverpool after a memorable five-year spell that saw them win the Champions League and clinch the Premier League title.

He also helped the club lift the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, and he plans to continue challenging for silverware with his new team.

‘Winning titles is very important, that’s what we all want to accomplish as a footballer,’ Wijnaldum added.

‘And Paris wants to win, it’s a club that has progressed a lot over the years, which has played in a Champions League final, which also reached the last four last season.

‘I think the project is beautiful, and we are building a team to fulfil these goals.’

LeBron James becomes first active NBA Player with $1 billion in career earnings

LeBron James has become the first NBA player to make $1 billion while still active in the sport.

The news comes after Space Jam: A New Legacy, which James starred in and produced, enjoyed a whopping $31.6 million in revenue its opening weekend.

According to Sportico, James has earned $330 million in his playing salary alone since being drafted in 2003. The 36-year-old has reportedly made another $700 million off the court through endorsements deals, merchandise, licensing, and his media production company, SpringHill Co. His current endorsement deals, which include partnerships with AT&T, Beats Electronics, Blaze Pizza, GMC, Nike, PepsiCo, Rimowa, and Walmart garner over $100 million every year.

Sportico compared James’ historic earnings to Michael Jordan’s who, of course, starred in the original 1996 Space Jam film.

While Jordan is now worth around $2 billion, the outlet writes that much of that revenue was made after his legendary NBA career.

One venture that has been particularly lucrative for Jordan during his retirement is Nike’s highly successful Jordan Brand. Sportico writes that Jordan fell just short of earning $1 billion while active, making James the first NBA player to achieve the feat.

With the distinction, James joins the heavy tier of athletes who have made $1 billion while active, including Tiger Woods, Floyd Mayweather, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Roger Federer.

The Los Angeles Lakers star is also the first active player in a U.S. team sport to hit the monetary milestone.

6 persons arrested to Madagascar plotting to assassinate its President

Six people including one foreign citizen have been arrested by the police in Madagascar for reportedly plotting to assassinate President Andry Rajoelina.

Attorney General Berthine Razafiarivony said on Thursday Juky 22, that the arrests took place on Tuesday July 20 as part of months-long investigation “into an attack on state security”.

Though there was no official confirmation about the nationality of the foreign suspects, Razafiarivony said the foiled plot included the “killing and neutralisation” of senior political figures other than the president.

He said;

“According to the evidence in our possession, these individuals had devised a plan for the elimination and neutralisation of a number of people including the head of state.”

Officials did not give details on the extent of the plot or how far advanced it was when the suspects were apprehended.

A separate statement by the public security minister on Wednesday said that six people had been arrested: one foreign citizen, two dual nationals, and three Madagascans.

The minister said;

“The police had information for several months, but only now was there an opportunity to arrest them.”

Madagascar has a history of political violence. Former coup leader Andry Rajoelina, 44, was sworn in as president in 2019 after a hard-fought election and a constitutional court challenge from his rival.

Rajoelina first seized power in the deeply impoverished former French colony of 26 million in a March 2009 coup, ousting Marc Ravalomanana. He remained in control at the head of a transitional government until 2014.

The island is internationally famed for its unique wildlife and vanilla but is heavily dependent on foreign aid. Nine out of 10 people live on less than $2 a day.

China pissed by WHO’s proposal to begin Second Phase of Covid-19 Origins Study

The Chinese government has announced it will not participate in a second phase of the World Health Organization’s investigation into the origins of Covid-19, after the possibility of the virus leaking from a Wuhan lab was included on the proposal.

The WHO released an initial report from its investigation into the origins of Covid-19 in March, in which it determined that the virus probably originated in an animal before spreading to human beings around December 2019. But the US, EU and G7, questioned the WHO’s report.

United States President Joe Biden has ordered US intelligence agencies to take a new look into how the Covid-19 pandemic began, noting that Western observers have yet to be granted access to key laboratories to determine “whether it was an experiment gone awry.”

But Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, told a press conference in Beijing on Thursday July 22, he had been “surprised” to see the lab leak listed as a research objective under the second phase of the investigation.

“In some aspects, the WHO’s plan for next phase of investigation of the coronavirus origin doesn’t respect common sense, and it’s against science. It’s impossible for us to accept such a plan,” he said.

Zeng also responded to claims by US State Department  that several workers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology fell sick shortly before the first documented cases of Covid-19, saying “no worker or researcher at the WIV got infected by coronavirus.”

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus joined calls for China to cooperate more fully with a new Covid-19 origins investigation on July 15, saying the first had been hampered by a lack of raw data on the early days of the pandemic.

“We ask China to be transparent and open and to cooperate,” he told a news conference.

“We owe it to the millions who suffered and the millions who died to know what happened.”

“Buhari’s Govt must expose those sponsoring Kanu and Igboho” – Northern Groups Says

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has reacted to the arrest of Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo popularly referred to as Sunday Igboho.

In a statement issued by the coalition’s spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the group urged the Nigerian government to immediately expose sponsors of groups clamouring for self-determination in the Southern part of the country. The group suggested that one of the charges that should be filed against Igboho should be ”incitement to violence against northerners”

The statement in part reads

“From the outset, we wish to be categoric that the arrest of Igboho and Kanu should not be mistaken as bringing about the end to the uprisings and disturbances over self-determination perpetrated by southern Nigerian elites and governments who use thugs like Igboho and Kanu.

We insist that rather than seeing the arrest as an end in itself, it should be the beginning of the processes for self-determination by any unit that wants to go.

Therefore we insist on a peaceful referendum for separation from a people who would at the slightest of pretexts, attack, kill and destroy people of other regions and their properties, especially those from the North.

The arrest of Igboho is government business and so long as it conforms with the principle of rule of law and international criminal justice procedures. We are not yet sure what he is going to be charged with, but expectedly incitement to violence against northerners would be one of them.

We all know that threats of violent secession anywhere are a grave offence that no government will condone. From records of history, it is only northern Nigeria that has not called for the breakup of the country at the slightest of pretence.

With the arrest of Kanu and now Igboho, we are hoping that government would go beyond prosecution to digging up and exposing their sponsors and the agenda behind them.

While Kanu’s case may be attributed to some form of insanity which was exploited by the South East elites who were playing a double game, Igboho is a deliberate and calculated, supported and encouraged attempt by the Yoruba leaders including their governments to scare the North into agreeing to cede power without competition.

Unfortunately they took it too far by arming Igboho and setting him against law-abiding citizens from other regions particularly the North.

The arrest if considered along with that of Kanu should serve as a lesson to those blind followers who are instigated into setting fire to their own backyards whereas the instigators of such lawlessness and violence almost all the time have a fallback option that includes escaping abroad.

“The two arrests also attest to the level of cross-regional cooperation that is working across Africa.”

COVID-19 cases rose by 77% in one week – NCDC cries

covid 19 vaccine in process

New epidemiological data from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC says the number of COVID19 cases recorded in the country has risen by 77 per cent in one week.

According to the data, the number of COVID19 cases rose from 392 two weeks ago to 693 last week (July 5 to July 11). The report states that the number of discharges (recoveries) dropped by 87 percent from the 433 persons discharged two weeks ago to 57 discharged last week.

The report states that testing improved in the last week by 29 percent, from 28,656 tests in 32 states to 36,965 tests in 34 states. Seven states performed poorly, testing less than 10 people in one week. The states with their corresponding number of tests are Bauchi (1), Sokoto (1), Zamfara (1), Kogi (3), Yobe (3), Nasarawa (5), Niger (5), Lagos (15,673), FCT (5,405) and Rivers (3,991) tested the highest number of COVID-19 samples.

Reacting to the new developments, the NCDC Director-General Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, appealed to Nigerians to take the COVID19 protocols seriously, particularly as the dangerous Delta variant has been detected in the country.

“Given the high transmissibility of the Delta variant and following its detection in Nigeria, NCDC urges all Nigerians to ensure strict adherence to public health and social measures in place.

Proven public health and social measures such as physical distancing, frequent handwashing, and proper use of face masks, prevent infections and save lives. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective and offers protection against the disease.

Additionally, states are urged to ensure sample collection and testing for COVID-19 is accessible to the public. Public settings such as schools with accommodation facilities, workplaces and camps should utilise the approved Antigen based Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) for rapid testing of their population.” he said

Researchers have said that the Delta variant is about 50 per cent more contagious than the Alpha variant, which was first identified in the U.K. The Delta variant may also be able to escape protection from vaccines and some COVID-19 treatments, though studies are still ongoing.

Republic of Benin rejects the extradition of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho to Nigeria

The Republic of Benin has rejected the extradition of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho to Nigeria.

Recall that Benin security agents took Igboho and his wife into custody in neighbouring Cotonou on the night of Monday, July 19, under directives from the Nigeria, as the activist was reportedly planning to travel to Germany with his wife who is a German citizen.

A robust legal challenge  by Igboho’s legal team against the Benin government has now stapled his extradition to Nigeria despite the FG’s insistence that he be extradited to Nigeria to face allegations of weapons stockpiling and activities that threaten the country.

Despite immense pressure from Nigeria, Benin Republic on Wednesday, July 21, reportedly insisted that it would not be part of any process that was against due process

“The Nigerian government planned to extradite him on Wednesday,  but our government said the rule of law must be followed as the world is watching us.” A Benin security official told The PUNCH.

Pelumi Olajengbesi, one of the lawyers of Igboho, also told Punch that “Benin Republic had shown itself to be a country that respects the rule of law and due process,” and that “Igboho’s legal team in Benin Republic were in talks with the Beninise government.”

3 Nigerian migrants jump to their deaths after trying to escape from fire on 10-storey building in France (video)

Three Nigerian migrants have died after they jumped out of windows of a public house building to escape a fire in the southern French city of Marseille.

The incident happened shortly after 5 a.m on Saturday, July 17, when a fire broke out of the building in the housing estate “Les Flamants” where migrants from Nigeria are known to squat.

A two-year-old and an adult were also seriously hurt in the blaze inside the ten-floor building, Marseille public prosecutor, Dominique Laurens, said.

The child was very seriously burned. Nine other people reportedly sustained less serious injuries.

The three victims, aged 20 to 30, apparently desperate amid the flames spreading in the building, jumped out of windows.

Knotted bed sheets hanging from the facade indicated how desperate the victims had become on noticing the fire,  according to the AFP news agency.

Speaking during a press briefing, Laurens said the fire spread quickly through the technical shafts, but did not reach the apartments which are “free of smoke penetration,” suggesting the blaze was started deliberately.

“The existence of two fires, one on the sixth floor, the other in the stairwell” prompted investigators to launch a criminal investigation,” the public prosecutor added.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian community of Marseille accused drug dealers of causing the tragedy.

“The dealers terrify us. They have guns. They prevent us from sleeping,” Azeke Endurance, 30, told AFP.

According to the police chief, Frederique Camilleri, there indeed is “a notorious degree of drug dealing here” as well as “tensions between the inhabitants and the traffickers.”

Echoing Camilleri’s statement, the public prosecutor, also described the situation on the ground as extremely tense, adding that the prices of drugs are written on the walls in the stairwell of the building.

A 31-year-old Nigerian man had been living there for a year with his wife, now six months pregnant. Every month, the couple had to pay illegal rent to drug dealers who deal in the building.

“Sometimes they would hit my wife because they came to collect the money. Sometimes they would take €200, sometimes €300,” the asylum seeker told France Bleu radio network.

“If you tell them you don’t have money, they hit you several times.” The man has decided to sleep in the streets with his pregnant wife where it’s “less dangerous than the squat.”

The dilapidation of the building, which was set to be demolished, is apparent.

Lionel Royer-Perreault, president of public housing management company Habitat 13, which owns the building, said the structure was on a list to eventually be demolished.

According to a statement by Marseille’s city hall, “91 people, including 28 women and 27 children, were taken by municipal services to two gymnasiums for emergency shelter” on Saturday evening.

The officials called on the state to offer dignified accommodation to all affected people.

“If the cause of the fire has yet to be determined…what is clear is that the unlivable situation of the squatters here and elsewhere in Marseille’s public housing blocs creates a dangerous situation and serious risk for everyone,” said Samia Ghali, Marseille deputy mayor.

Marseille politicians faced accusations of ignoring warnings about unsafe housing in 2018, when eight people were killed when two buildings collapsed in the center of the port city, AFP reported.

Kitajima further added that a “wild celebration” such as an athlete bagging a gold could perhaps be bad news for the bed. “Of course, wood and cardboard would each break if you jumped on them,” he said.

Third Australian city, Brisbane picked to host 2032 Olympics

Brisbane was picked Wednesday, July 21, to host the 2032 Olympics.

International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, confirmed the inevitable winner after a vote at the IOC session in Tokyo and this triggered cheers from the Brisbane delegates in Tokyo and celebratory fireworks thousands of miles away in Brisbane.

“The International Olympic Committee has the honour to announce that the Games of the 35th Olympiad are awarded to Brisbane, Australia,” Bach said.

Brisbane picked to host 2032 Olympics

Brisbane will become the third Australian city to host the Summer Games after Melbourne (hosted in 1956) and Sydney (in 200o).

“We know what it takes to deliver a successful Games in Australia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told International Olympic Committee voters in an 11-minute live video link from his office.

He added: “It’s a historic day not just for Brisbane and Queensland, but for the entire country.

“Only global cities can secure the Olympic Games, so this is fitting recognition for Brisbane’s standing across our region and the world.”

Brisbane follows 2028 host Los Angeles in getting 11 years to prepare for hosting the Games. Paris will host in 2024.

The 2032 deal for Brisbane looked done even months before the formal decision by IOC members at their meeting ahead of the Tokyo Games, which open Friday.

The IOC gave Brisbane exclusive negotiating rights back in February. That decision left Olympic officials in Qatar, Hungary and Germany looking blindsided with their own stalled bidding plans.

Brisbane was the first winner in a new bidding format. It lets the IOC approach potential candidates and pick them uncontested.

Hundreds of people packed Brisbane’s Southbank riverside precinct for an announcement viewing party, watching the city’s final pitch to the IOC projected on a big screen.

Rhys Cush, 24, one of those in the crowd, said he hoped to work at the 2032 Olympics and also attend as a spectator.

“I’m an extremely big fan. I even watched the softball this morning,” he told AFP. “I’m super excited about having the Olympics coming here.”

Lauren Granger, 42, said she hoped the 2032 Olympics would recreate the buzz of Sydney’s successful 2000 Games.

“We flew down to Sydney and we were at the Olympics and it was just such a great experience for our family,” she said.

“That was 20 years ago so we’d love to be able to relive that in 2032 with our kids.”

Fireworks lit up the skies above Brisbane following the announcement.

French president Emmanuel Macron’s phone number and others found in list of spying targets using Pegasus

French president, Emmanuel Macron’s phone number has been found among potential targets of a huge international spying operation.

French president, Emmanuel Macron’s phone number has been found among potential targets of a huge international spying operation.

According to Mail Online, Macron is among 50,000 politicians, journalists, and human rights activists around the world said to have been identified as ‘people of interest’ by clients of Israeli firm NSO, developer of a surveillance system called Pegasus.

President Imran Khan of Pakistan and President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa as well as World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. are also among potential targets found on a list of numbers leaked to Amnesty and the Paris-based journalism nonprofit Forbidden Stories.

The Paris prosecutor’s office is investigating suspected widespread use of Pegasus spyware and an official in the president’s office said: ‘If this is proven, it is clearly very serious.’

Investigator Laurent Richard said on French TV: ‘We found these numbers but we obviously couldn’t do a technical analysis of Emmanuel Macron’s phone to determine if it had been infected with a spying device.’

Last night the NSO Group denied that it had ever maintained ‘a list of potential, past or existing targets’.

‘The unprecedented revelation… should send a chill down the spine of world leaders,’ Amnesty’s secretary general, Agnes Callamard, said in a statement.

Three current prime ministers and the king of Morocco, Mohammed VI, are also on the list, The Washington Post reported.

The Post said none of the heads of state would offer their smartphones for forensic testing that might have detected whether they were infected by NSO’s military-grade Pegasus spyware. Thirty-seven phones identified in the investigation were either breached or shows signs of attempted infection, it has reported.

The Post and 16 other members of a global media consortium were granted access to the leaked list. Another member, the French daily Le Monde, determined that 15 members of the French government may have been among potential targets with Macron in 2019.

The Paris prosecutor’s office is investigating the suspected widespread use of NSO’s military-grade Pegasus spyware to target journalists, human rights activists, and politicians in multiple countries.

Also Sunday, Amnesty released a forensic analysis of the alleged targeting that showed Amazon Web Services was hosting NSO infrastructure.

In response, Amazon said it shut down NSO accounts that were ‘confirmed to be supporting the reported hacking activity.’ Amazon said the accounts had violated its terms of use.

Another U.S. company identified by Amnesty as hosting NSO servers was DigitalOcean. When contacted by The Associated Press, DigitalOcean neither confirmed nor denied whether it had identified or cut off such servers, the report said.

‘All of the infrastructure outlined in the Amnesty report is no longer on DigitalOcean,’ it said Tuesday, without elaborating, in an emailed statement.

Shocking! Oyo State Government discovers 41 Ghost Workers

The Oyo State Government has detected 41 ghost workers on its payroll as 341 others with irregular records opt for voluntary retirement.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, July 21, said the Implementation Committee of the Oyo State 2019/2020 Civil/Public Servants Audit and Payroll Re-engineering/Validation Exercise has recommended the removal of the 41 staff classified as “No Show” by the consultants.

“The consultants had indicted 602 officers and recommended them for removal from the payrolls but the Implementation Committee affirmed 41 ghost workers; cleared 40 others of any infraction; uncovered 10 deaths; 170 systematic retirements; and affirmed the option of voluntary retirement by 341 others with irregular records of service,” the statement read.

The statement indicated that the Implementation Committee had examined the report submitted by the consultants and also interacted with the affected officers before finalising the implementation model.

Messrs Sally Tilbot Consulting was, in 2019, engaged by the Oyo State Government to undertake employees and pensioners’ verification/validation and payroll re-engineering, tagged 2019/2020 staff audit.

Following series of reconciliations, the report of the consultants was received by the government on April 30, 2021, after which an Implementation Committee was put in place to fashion out the final implementation model.

The 13-member Implementation Committee, headed by Mr. D.O Olatunde, Permanent Secretary, Civil Service Commission, affirmed that “forty-one (41) officers established to be “No Show” should be removed from government payrolls immediately.”

The committee recommended that an administrative investigation be undertaken by the government to determine where the salaries of the “No Show” officers had been going.

The statement added that of the 341 who indicated their decision of voluntary retirement to the Implementation Committee, 290 officers had turned in their voluntary retirement letters, while the 24 officers who failed to take advantage of the two-month window have now been retired by the concerned agencies of government. The Implementation Committee had put together its report in May 2021.

Messrs Sally Tilbot Consultants had, earlier in its report submitted to the government, indicted 602 workers and advised that they be removed from the payrolls.

The Implementation Committee, however, recommended that the government should affirm the resolve of 341 officers who opted to retire voluntarily following the discovery of irregular records of service in their files.

The affected officers are to be “helped to port into the pension payroll not later than two months after their respective notices of retirement,” the report stated.

According to the statement, the administration of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde had, in a painstaking effort, set up a number of reconciliation meetings to review the report of Sally Tilbot Consultants, which undertook a forensic analysis of civil/public servants between 2019 and 2020.

Afterwards, the 13-member Implementation Committee, headed by Olatunde was further put in place to fine-tune the final processes of its implementation.

The Committee, according to its report submitted to the government, had, however, recommended that 170 officers, who were found to have “retired systematically” (retirement according to age or years of service) be removed from the list of 602 earlier recommended for sanction by Tilbot Consultants.

Ten others who were found to have died were also removed from the list prepared by the Consultants, while another 40 officers were cleared and absolved of any offence.

The report read in part: “From the above, it is observed that from the 602 alleged officers, one hundred and seventy (170) had already retired systematically due to no particular influence of the screening exercise and ten (10) deceased.

“Consequently, the Committee agreed that out of the 602 officers involved in the report: Forty (40) officers should be absolved and allowed to remain on government payrolls; one undred and seventy (170) officers who had retired systematically should be allowed on pension payrolls; and ten (10) deceased officers should be paid their due entitlements.

It also agreed that: “three hundred and forty-one (341) officers that opted for voluntary retirement should be allowed to do so; forty-one (41) officers established to be “No Show” should be removed from Government Payrolls immediately; while the list of affected officers from Tertiary Institutions should be forwarded to their respective Governing Councils for necessary action.”

JUST IN: UK Govt. asks Nigeria to explain how IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and extradited

The United Kingdom has asked the Nigerian government to explain the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

According to Reuters, Tariq Ahmad, junior minister at Britain’s foreign office, says the UK wants Nigeria to explain how Kanu was arrested.

“We are seeking clarification from the Nigerian government about the circumstances of the arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.

Ahmad also said Britain had requested consular access to Kanu and stands ready to provide consular assistance.

Kanu, who has been campaigning for the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra, was first arrested on October 14, 2015.

He was granted bail in April 2017 but later fled Nigeria after soldiers invaded his residence in Abia state during a military clampdown on IPOB members.

Kanu, who holds British citizenship, was mostly in the UK after he fled Nigeria. But he was arrested in June and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for treasonable felony.

Although the federal government did not state where Kanu was arrested, Kingsley Kanu, Kanu’s brother alleged that the IPOB leader was arrested in Kenya and handed over to Nigerian authorities who then brought him back to Nigeria.

The Kenya government, however, denied that Kanu was arrested and extradited from the country to Nigeria.

Jeff Bezos gave $100 million each to Chef Jose Andres and Van Jones from CNN

The world’s wealthiest man, Jeff Bezos, and owner of Amazon has donated the stunning sum of $200m to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef José Andrés.

He made the announcement on Tuesday, July 21, after flying to the edge of space that he planned to award $100 million each to both men.

Bezos said that Jones and Andres were free to do “what they want” with the money.

“They can give it all to their own charity,” Bezos said at a press conference after his trip to space. “Or they can share the wealth. It is up to them.”

The money, Bezos said, was tied to a “surprise” philanthropic initiative he wanted to announce called the Courage and Civility Award.

The award aims to honor those who have “demonstrated courage” and tried to be a unifier in a divisive world, Bezos added.

“We need unifiers and not vilifiers,” Bezos said.

“We need people who argue hard and act hard for what they believe. But they do that always with civility and never ad hominem attacks. Unfortunately, we live in a world where this is too often not the case. But we do have role models.”

Jones, accepting the award, said that “sometimes dreams come true.”

“You bet on me and I appreciate it,” Jones told Bezos, later adding that it was money for him to “give to others who have a similar spirit.”

Andrés, a chef, who has poured his efforts into feeding those in need around the world, said that the award itself “cannot feed the world on its own.”

“But,” Andrés added, “this is a start of a new chapter for us.”

Anderson Cooper, who was anchoring CNN’s special coverage of Bezos’s trip to space said that the award was “quite a surprise.”

“None of us knew anything about it,” Cooper said.

US Rapper, Drake will release his footwear called ‘certified lover boy’ (photo)

Rapper, Drake has joined the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna to create his own footwear.

The ‘God’s plan’ rapper wil soon be using his very own Air Force 1s as he has teamed up with Nike for a special Certified Lover Boy collaboration.

The all-white leather kicks appear to look like a standard pair of AF1 Lows, but upon close examination one will notice small hearts towards the front of the shoe in place of the traditional textured stars.

“Love you forever” is written in cursive on the lateral heel instead of the customary “Air” branding.

It’s unclear when the Certified Lover Boy sneakers will be launching, but the release could coincide with Drake’s long-awaited sixth studio album, which is nearing completion.

He recently said the project is being mixed and will drop before the end of summer.

Obi Cubana Speaks (video)

Obi Iyiegbu, better known as Obi Cubana, has granted an interview where he addressed how he became a successful businessman and also his mother’s talk-of-the-town burial.

The 46-year-old businessman told BBC Pidgin he and his siblings gave their mother a burial that became the talk of the town because they had promised her that her 80th birthday would be a carnival. As she died at 78, they decided to fulfil their promise by giving her the kind of burial she got as she fulfilled the role of father and mother after their father died 15 years ago.

The businessman said he studied political science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and kept looking for a job after NYSC but couldn’t find so he started doing  “small small mama put” (restaurant) in Abuja where he did his youth service, after which he started a “beer parlour” at Garden, Abuja.

He said that at the time he was doing the beer parlour business, he, his brothers, and their friends were living in a one-room accommodation in Zone 4, Abuja. He said it was a tiny room, 12 by 12, and all the six occupants of the room had was a mattress on the floor which they had to manage.

He said their source of livelihood, the beer parlour, was soon demolished “through El-Rufai”.

He added he thought it was over at the time but he opened “Ibiza” which then birthed “Cubana”.

He explained that not every business he got into worked. Some failed, he said, others succeeded.

Speaking of the publicity around his mother’s burial and comments from some that he and his friends did rituals or got their money through illegal means, Obi Cubana said hard work is the only way he got his money.

He explained that what people see now is years of hardwork.

He said:

Miracle doesn’t give money because that pastor needs the money more. Native doctor cannot give you money because his children are the ones who fetch water from the stream. How can he give you what he doesn’t have? Work hard. Work hard.

As for those asking him to “cut soap” for them, he told them to work hard and be consistent.

“Cut soap” is slang used to ask a successful person to give you a bit of what they are using that makes them successful. It originates from the claims that some young fraudsters visit ritualists who give them soap to bathe with for optimal success.

Obi Cubana said: “If you are in your 20s, work now. I am 46 years. I have done my first half. I don’t know why someone who is just 20 years will say he has not made it when he still has 50 years 60 years ahead.

“There is no soap to cut for anybody, there is no soap anywhere, work, pray, be good, make your own soap.”

The Chairman of Cubana Group said the only spiritual power he believes in is prayer. He said his mother, a school teacher, was very prayerful and after she died, he felt a huge part of his energy left him.

He further stated that he believes in fasting and prayer and not rituals.

“I do pray before I leave the house. I pray because if you don’t pray your body will be naked and prone to different attacks,” he said.

As for the crowd at his mother’s burial and how money was displayed, Obi said it comes from years of friendship and goodwill.

He said: “We didn’t plan for one-fifth of the crowd at the funeral. But see what happened at the burial.

“People have been saying that Obi Cubana has money, which money? They need to know people who have money in Anambra and in Nigeria.

“It is not about money but goodwill. What happened that day, money can’t buy it. See the crowd, yet nobody was raped, no car was stolen and no one was attacked. It can only be God.”

Ugandan athlete ‘disappears’ in Japan before Tokyo Olympics, leaves a kind ‘note’

A Ugandan athlete has gone missing after he arrived in Japan for the Tokyo Olympics.

Julius Ssekitoleko, a 20-year-old weightlifter went missing from his pre-Olympic training camp in Osaka Prefecture on Friday, July 16. He had been training as part of the nine-member Ugandan team in Izumisano, Osaka prefecture, city officials said.

Teammates realized the athlete was absent around noon Friday when his saliva test sample was not delivered and they found his hotel room empty, city officials said. There was no training Friday morning and he was last seen in his room in the early hours of Friday.

After failing to find him inside the hotel, officials notified police for a broader search. There was no 24-hour monitoring at the hotel, and exactly when or how he got out of the hotel was unknown, officials said.

It has now been revealed that he left a note at his hotel that he wants to work in Japan and no longer want to return to Uganda because life there is difficult and asked members of his delegation to give his belongings to his wife in his home country, according to the city.

“I want to work in Japan,” local officials said.

The athlete answered his phone when an official in Uganda called him at around 6 p.m., but he said he was not in a situation to talk and hung up, according to the city.

In a statement sent to Kyodo News, Beatrice Ayikoru, the chef de mission of the Ugandan delegation, admitted that Ssekitoleko has gone missing and said that he was due to head home with his coach next Tuesday.

“We, during our regular team briefings both in Uganda and in Japan, emphasized inter alia the need to respect the immigration regulations of Japan and not opt to leave the camp without authorization,” the chief of the team said, adding it is cooperating with local authorities in trying to locate him.

Marjorie Taylor, US Republican Lawmaker, suspended by Twitter over ‘misleading’ COVID-19 posts

Republican lawmaker, Marjorie Taylor Greene has been suspended by Twitter for posting “misleading” information about Coronavirus.

Greene was suspended for 12 hours after she posted messages that violated Twitter’s policy against sharing misleading information about the Coronavirus.

In two tweets on Monday July 19, she argued that vaccines should not be required, and that COVID-19 was not dangerous for people aged under 65 who are not obese. Both posts are still on display, but have been tagged by Twitter as “misleading”.

A Twitter spokesperson said;

“We took enforcement action on the account @mtgreenee for violations of the Twitter Rules, specifically the Covid-19 misleading information policy.”

The congresswoman has been an outspoken opponent of vaccines and masks as tools to curb the pandemic.

Greene’s tweet comes at a time when COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise across the U.S. as the more infectious Delta variant of the virus takes hold and the uptake of vaccines begins to stall.

Georgia, the congresswoman’s home state, is now reporting an average 1,000 new COVID-19 cases a day compared to an average of around 340 cases a day exactly one month ago.

Reacting to her suspension, Ms Greene said Silicon Valley firms were attacking free speech with support from the White House.

The statement made available to New York Times read;

“These Big Tech companies are doing the bidding of the Biden regime to restrict our voices and prevent the spread of any message that isn’t state-approved.”

Twitter took action after President Biden called on social media companies to do more to combat the spread of vaccine misinformation on their platforms.

On Friday July 16, Mr. Biden said sites like Facebook were “killing people” by allowing misinformation to flourish unchallenged, adding, “Look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and that — and they’re killing people.”
