Man kills his child over a piece of fish

One Saviour Aniefok is reportedly on the run after he allegedly beat his seven-year-old son, Nathaniel, to death over a piece fish.

It was gathered that the incident happened at the suspect’s residence in the Shangisha area of Magodo Phase 2, Lagos State.

Aniefok allegedly tortured the boy on the allegation that he stole a piece of fish belonging to one of his customers.

According to Punch Aniefok, an artisan, had repaired a faulty microwave oven for a customer, who gave him a piece of fish to test it after repair.

Aniefok reportedly forgot to return the fish while delivering the repaired microwave to the customer so he took it home for preservation.

One of the neighbours told the publication that Saviour was fond of torturing Nathaniel and his brother, Charles.

“I still saw Nathaniel on Sunday afternoon. In fact, I gave him snacks to eat. Around 10pm, we started to hear Nathaniel shouting and crying for help; we also heard loud bangs on the floor and wall indicating that he was being beaten,” the neighbour said.

“As he was crying, Saviour was telling him to shut up. I personally thought their stepmother was at home to caution him. But later, we got to know she had travelled. Surprisingly, I heard Nathaniel died the following day.”

Another neighbour said the father facilitated Nathaniel’s burial the following day, adding that he went into hiding and took Charles along to conceal the crime

“I was told his father said he was sick; someone that I saw playing in the compound. The injuries he sustained during the torture must have been responsible for his death. We only saw Saviour on two separate occasions after his son died. We have also not seen the stepmother of the children

“We learnt that the police have arrested his brother but we don’t know if Saviour has been arrested. I have seen him torturing one of the boys to the point of carrying the boy up and slamming him to the ground,” the neighbour said.

Another neighbour said he saw Saviour and three other persons attempting to convey Nathaniel to a location in the state around 4am.

“I saw Nathaniel lying naked in the back seat of Saviour’s car. I observed that a pain relief substance had been used to massage his body because I smelt it. I was on my way to work when I saw them.”

Good Samaritans contacted the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, which informed the Isheri Police Division to investigate the case.

When contacted, Saviour denied torturing his son to death, adding that Nathaniel was fleeing from being disciplined for stealing his customer’s fish when he fell and smashed his head on tiles.

“I didn’t torture my son to death. After I returned from church on Sunday, I got home and realised my customer’s fish had been touched. I asked who touched it and Charles said he was not the one. I asked Nathaniel, but he also denied it. I was going inside my room when Nathaniel thought I wanted to get a cane and as he attempted to run, he fell and hit his head on the tiles.

“I observed he was behaving strangely around 2am, so I quickly rushed him to a nearby hospital but it was locked. I rushed him to another hospital in Ketu, where he was referred to another hospital, but he died

“I didn’t go into hiding; my mother was sick, and I came home with my other child to see her and tell her what happened. I wanted to return to Lagos today but the IPOB stay-at-home order prevented me.” he added.

“Keep extremists at bay” Putin warns

Russian president, Vladimir Putin has told leaders of countries in Asia to keep ‘extremists’ at bay following the Taliban’s takeover of power in Afghanistan.

It’s the first time that Putin is lending his voice to the international dilemma caused by the withdrawal of US forces from the Taliban controlled Afghanistan.

Russia is keen to ensure that the instability in Afghanistan does not spill over into Central Asia, part of the former Soviet Union it regards as its own backyard.

Addressing an online summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Monday, August 23, Putin said it was important to keep “Islamist extremists” at bay

The CSTO’s emergency talks on Afghanistan were chaired by Emomali Rahmon, Tajikistan’s president, and attended by the leaders of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan – all former Soviet republics.

The military alliance voiced concerns that ISIL (ISIS) still had a foothold in Afghanistan and remained a threat to the wider region, the Kremlin said.

It added that the six leaders had agreed to coordinate action on the unfolding situation in the country, including in response to any emerging threats.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the group discussed the implications of “another civil war in Afghanistan”, but added: “No one is going to intervene in these events.”

His remarks come after a Taliban spokesman said on Monday that the group had surrounded Panjshir, the only one of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces that has not yet fallen to it.

Several Taliban opponents have gathered in the area, which lies north of the capital, Kabul. They include Amrullah Saleh, vice president of the now-toppled government who claims to be the acting president, and Ahmad Massoud, son of the slain commander of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance coalition that partnered with the United States to drive the group from power in 2001.

Putin had earlier raised his concerns regarding the situation in Afghanistan, warning last week that a “collapse” in the security situation could see “terrorists” entering neighbouring states “under the guise of refugees”.

“Our Western partners are persistently raising the question of placing refugees in Central Asian countries before obtaining visas to the United States or other countries,” he told a meeting of officials of Russia’s ruling United Russia party on Sunday.

“But who is among these refugees? How can we know?”

Putin estimated that “hundreds, even hundreds of thousands, or maybe even millions” of people might want to flee Afghanistan, where Afghans and foreigners continue to descend on Kabul’s International Airport in desperate bids to flee the Taliban’s takeover.

Meanwhile, hundreds have fled to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, which share borders with Afghanistan.

Arsenal midfielder, Willian set to leave Arsenal after receiving backlash for celebrating Chelsea victory

Arsenal midfielder Willian is set for a return to Brazil with Corinthians.

The two clubs are in talks over a deal for the former Chelsea star, who would return to his homeland on a free transfer and it’s understood discussion is at an advanced stage for the deal to be completed.

Willian signed for Arsenal on free transfer last season, but his move has not gone according to plan as the Gunners struggled under Mikel Arteta last season.

The Gunners are keen to remove his £190,000-per-week salary from the wage bill and would allow the South American to leave the Emirates.

This comes two days after he angered Arsenal fans for ‘liking’ a social media post from his former club Chelsea rcelebrating their 2 – 0 win over his current club.

The Blues had shared a celebration post showing the 2-0 scoreline along with a picture of Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Jorginho congratulating goalscorer Reece James.

The caption read: “Imagine not being Chelsea.”

Shortly after, eagle-eyed fans on social media spotted Willian had given the post a ‘like’.

One wrote: “Get rid of these Chelsea double agents from our club!!”

Another said: “Willian liking this on Instagram? And he wonders why the Arsenal fans don’t like him…”

A third added: “Terminate his contract.”

And a Chelsea fan joked: “I used to like William when he was at Chelsea but now I absolutely love him.”

Willian, 33, endured a shocking first season at Arsenal following a move from Chelsea in the summer of 2020, and reports have linked him with a move away from the club before the summer transfer window closes.

Taliban Soldiers Flogs Young Afghans For Wearing Western Jeans and Listening to Music

A group of young Afghans have said they were flogged by Taliban soldiers for the crime of wearing jeans.

In a post widely shared on Facebook, an Afghan youth said they were “walking with friends in Kabul,” when they encountered a group of Taliban soldiers who accused them of disrespecting Islam.

Two of the friends escaped, the youth said, but the others were beaten, whipped on their necks and threatened at gunpoint.

According to a local newspaper, Etilaatroz, the movement was still deciding on the dress code for men, but reports suggest the Taliban is unwilling to allow ‘westernised’ clothing that deviates from traditional ‘Afghan dress’.

The newspaper added that over the weekend, one of its journalists had also been beaten for not wearing ‘Afghan clothes’ such as full-body gowns, according to a report in the Telegraph.

Under the Taliban’s previous rule in the late 90s, men had to wear traditional robes while girls were forced to wear a burqa from the age of eight.

Meanwhile, recent footage has shown Taliban fighters attacking anyone carrying an Afghan national flag in at least a dozen incidents primarily in the capital Kabul.

It comes after human rights’ group, Amnesty International, revealed that Taliban fighters massacred nine ethnic Hazara men after taking control of the country’s Ghazni province last month.

A Taliban fighter was filmed hitting a young man with the tip of his rifle for playing music on his mobile phone.

The Kabul man was walking on a shopping street in Kabul when the Taliban accosted him, shouting, and hit his neck with a rifle, leaving him reeling in confusion.

The Kabul man is said to have broken the Taliban’s harsh sharia code by playing music.

After hitting the Kabul man, the Taliban militant lifted his rifle to hit him again before another armed Taliban member intervenes and allows the man to continue making his way along the street in the K?rte Naw district.

The video, obtained by Metro UK, shows the clampdown on people’s freedoms since the Taliban took over power in Afghanistan.

The British national, originally from Afghanistan, who supplied the footage, said: “The man was struck just for playing music on his phone.

“The Taliban are bringing in a lot of harsh restrictions, for example if you shave your beard you also risk being tortured and abused.

“While the British forces and the Americans are at the airport the Taliban are not enforcing a lot of the laws but when the international forces go they will apply to every single person.

“I am really scared for my family still in Afghanistan.”

R. Kelly ‘requested for sex from a teen in exchange for an audition,’ Court hears

R. Kelly allegedly ‘pressured’ a former girlfriend into having oral sex with him when she was 17, a court has heard.

The 54-year-old legendary R&B singer’s federal trial for racketeering and sex trafficking charges continued for the fourth day in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday, August 23, with Kelly denying the charges.

The prosecutor says that Kelly allegedly abused 22 victims, but have only filed charges centered around six alleged victims.

On Monday, the second witness, known in Kelly’s indictment as Jane Doe #5, testified in Brooklyn’s Federal District Court as she claimed the pair’s first sexual encounter happened when she thought she was meeting him for an audition.

Unlike the previous week’s accuser Jerhonda Pace, this witness testified under a pseudonym because of privacy concerns, and her real name does not appear in court records.

Jane Doe 5, who is now 23, previously defended the singer publicly as recently as 2019.

But has now made her own accusations of sexual and physical abuse.

She told jurors she had been eager to meet R. Kelly when she was 17 because she hoped the R&B superstar could help launch her career as a musician.

According to Jane Doe 5, when she arrived at Kelly’s hotel for an audition, the singer was interested in only sex.

Jane Doe 5 said that R. Kelly told her that he needed to relieve himself sexually before she began to sing.

‘I was against it — I told him I did not come to please him,’ she said.

‘He continued to persist and told me I didn’t have to do anything, just to take off my clothes.’

As Kelly’s pressure continued, Jane Doe 5, who had told him that she was 18, told jurors that she allowed the entertainer to perform a sex act on her.

He told her that if she agreed, he would allow her to audition and would ‘take care of me for life,’ she testified.

‘I didn’t necessarily care for that. I just wanted to sing.’

In the following months Jane Doe 5 claimed she started to experience severe pain whenever they had sex not knowing she had gotten herpes.

‘I would have discomfort in my pelvis and lower abdomen. It got to the point where I couldn’t even physically walk.’

Prosecutors claim the pain became so bad that Kelly eventually scheduled a doctor’s appointment for Jane Doe 5, at which point she learned that she had contracted vaginal herpes.

Jane Doe 5 claimed Kelly was ‘agitated’ when she revealed her diagnosis and insisted that she could have gotten the disease months before they met, but she told him she had only ever been intimate with him.

‘This man purposely gave me something he knew he had had. That he could have controlled,’ Jane Doe 5 said angrily on the stand, while Kelly reportedly sat emotionless.

Prosecutors say they aim to prove that the Grammy-winning singer ran a criminal scheme in which women and underage girls were recruited to engage in sexual activity with him.

Kelly, was first arrested on sex-related charges in 2002 after a video, allegedly showing him having sex with a 14-year-old girl, was sent to the Chicago Sun-Times, but he was acquitted in 2008.

The trial is occurring before an anonymous jury of seven men and five women.

Even if he is declared not guilty in New York he still faces charges in the states of Illinois, Atlanta and and Minnesota.

Lagos State uses 400 Oxygen cylinders per day for severe COVID-19 cases – Sanwo-Olu Says

Lagos State Governor,  Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that the state government is targeting having a capacity of 1000 oxygen cylinders daily as severe COVID-19 patients in the state currently utilise 400 oxygen cylinders per day since the outbreak of the third wave.

Sanwo-Olu made the revelation on Monday, August 23, at the Lagos House, Ikeja, during a news conference explaining the state’s management of the new wave of COVID-19.

He said that the 400 oxygen cylinders daily was an increase over the 75 cylinders utilised by severe COVID-19 cases, as at the beginning of the third wave of the virus.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government had invested in strengthening the capacity of the Lagos State BioBank to sequence positive cases while increasing the state’s oxygen capacity.

“Sequencing allows us to identify the predominant strains of the COVID-19 virus in our environment and provides us with information on how to better respond to the pandemic.

“In terms of treatment of the more severe cases, let me say a few things specifically about the use of oxygen, which is a vital requirement for the management of the most severe cases.

“We have indeed seen a gradual increase in the uptake of oxygen during this pandemic, from the utilisation of 75 cylinders per day at the beginning of this third wave, to over 400 cylinders per day, currently.

“With our modelling suggesting that we may be requiring even more oxygen supply over the next few weeks, we are exploring several ways of increasing our oxygen capacity, including partnering with the private sector,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu revealed the state had two functioning oxygen plants, at the IDH in Yaba and in Gbagada, adding that the government was looking forward to taking delivery of two additional oxygen plants being built in Lagos State by the Federal Government.

“It is important to note that oxygen supply is free at all public facilities designated for the treatment of COVID-19 in Lagos State.

“We encourage members of the public to report any of our staff soliciting fees for the provision of oxygen, to the office of the Honourable Commissioner for Health, and be assured that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

“Managing a pandemic of this nature and scale is not and will never be an easy endeavour.

“It is costly and requires hard work and commitment from a wide range of stakeholders and partners, sacrificing their time and energy and resources on multiple fronts to slow down the virus, and eventually to tame it,” the governor added.

Andrew Cuomo delivers his farewell address after his resignation over sexual harassment allegations

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo has issued his farewell address to constituents two weeks after announcing his resignation over sexual harassment allegations.

Recall New York attorney general’s office released the findings of an independent investigation into sexual harassment allegations made aginst Cuomo last month. The report found that Cuomo allegedly sexually harassed 11 women.

“Specifically, we find that the Governor sexually harassed a number of current and former New York State employees by, among other things, engaging in unwelcome and nonconsensual touching, as well as making numerous offensive comments of a suggestive and sexual nature that created a hostile work environment for women,” the report by James reads.

Several women including Lindsey Boylan, 36; Anna Ruch, 33; and Charlotte Bennett, 25, have come forward to accuse the governor of unwanted advances.

Cuomo had denied all allegations against him claiming he is innocent but had faced pressure from the Democratic party leadership and president Joe Biden to resign.

In his farewell speech on Monday, he questioned the fairness of an investigation by State Attorney General Letitia James that found he sexually harassed multiple women, including current and former state employees.

“Let me say now that when government politicizes allegations and the headlines condemn without facts, you undermine the justice system and that doesn’t serve women and it doesn’t serve men or society,” Cuomo said. “I understand that there are moments of intense political pressure and media frenzy that cause a rush to judgment, but that is not right. It’s not fair or sustainable. Facts still matter.”

He went on to criticize James’ 168-page report — which included claims from 11 women, including one he allegedly retaliated against — comparing it to a firecracker that causes a stampede.

“The attorney general’s report was designed to be a political firecracker on an explosive topic and it worked. There was a political and media stampede but the truth will (come) out in time. Of that I am confident,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo said his resignation takes effect at 11:59 p.m. Monday and New York state Lt. Gov. Kathleen Hochul will succeed him as governor.

3 persons shot dead while filming a crate challenge video on social media (video)

A teen girl in Louisiana and two others were shot dead while filming a viral crate challenge video on social media.

The crate challenge has become a viral challenge, with a number of people trying it and posting their result on social media.

At about 5:30pm on Sunday, while some young people were filming their crate challenge outside Linwood Public Charter School in Shreveport, Louisiana, shooting erupted.

19-year-old Paris King was among the victims killed while filming the milk crate challenge video.

Video footage shows a man attempting to climb a milk crate pyramid just as gunfire breaks out.

“Get my gun, get my gun!” one man shouted. Another man shouted “Where my baby?” It is unclear if the man doing the crate challenge survived the shooting.

Initial reports were that two people were shot outside the school. First responders found Paris King shot dead in the backseat of a car at the scene.

A police spokesman told NewsWeek that a man tried to drive away after the shooting but stopped when he realized King was shot in the back seat.

The driver of the car, and the other passenger, did not suffer injuries, Newsweek reported.

He died in a hospital after suffering from heart disease with his mom and brother by his side, according to a Facebook post by his mum Svetlana. Just hours before his death, Vovkovinskiy was able to spend time with his brother’s family and had his last dinner, which was a piece of Kyiv cake and Fanta.

Vovkovinskiy moved from Ukraine to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1989, for a pituitary gigantism, according to a TV segment he did on “The Dr. Oz Show” in 2010.

During that segment, Guinness World Record officials measured Vovkovinskiy’s height and crowned him the new Tallest Living Man in America. He was 27 years old at the time and beat out the previous record holder, Virginia deputy sheriff George Bell, by a third of an inch, according to Guinness.

Yahaya Bello Asks Tinubu To Relax Over His Presidential Ambition

The Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has called on the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, to drop his presidential ambition.

Anaedoonline.ng reports that Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state, is reportedly plotting to replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, though he is yet to officially declare his intention.

Speaking in an interview with Newsmen, Yahaya Bello, who described Tinubu as his father, urged the APC leader to allow his ‘children take over the mantle of leadership.’

The governor however stated that the former Lagos governor has a right to contest the election as he is a man of integrity.

Yahaya Bello said: “Senator Tinubu is one of our leaders and I respect him so much. He has played a very significant role in Nigeria’s democracy and has built a lot of people.

“He has paid his dues, and with all respect, as a son to him, my simple advice is that it is time for him to allow his children take over the mantle of leadership and do it to the glory of God and his admiration.

“He should see that those children he raised are now doing well. Let him see how we manage this country in his lifetime.

“However, he has a right to run, nobody is questioning that. I always urge everybody to respect him for the roles he has played in this country’s democracy. He is a man of integrity, to be candid.”

‘Eat mayonnaise instead of margarine’ – health expert urges

Studies have shown that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is projected to conservatively account for 30% of all deaths in Nigeria. In the last decade, we have seen a rise of fried and fast food consumption especially in urban areas, proportionately contributing to increase in cholesterol levels. While many have chosen to lead an unhealthy lifestyle with their food choices, others can’t be faulted as the increased poverty level in the country has forced many into a non-mutual relationship with malnutrition.

However, when you consider the numerous benefits that healthy food choices provide us, and understand the gravity of the statement, “you are what you eat”, you might have a change of attitude towards your food choices and consider adding healthy varieties to your diet profile to reduce consumption of unhealthy options.

Let’s start with the basics. Have you considered the fact that some of the complimentary spreads you consume with your popular staple food- bread, are unhealthy and responsible for increasing cardiovascular challenges, contributing to obesity and diabetes, with attendant complications of increased stroke, heart failure and ischemic heart disease?

Undoubtedly, spreads are an important part of our diet and for a fact many have discovered that they can’t do without popular spreads like margarine, butter and mayonnaise with their staple foods. However, consumers might be ignorant of the fact that the trans-fats contained in margarine increases bad cholesterol (i.e. low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides) while reducing the good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein). As a result, there has been an increase in incidences of atherosclerosis and overall cardiovascular risk of individuals.

Also, the leading ingredient in margarine – palm oil has been said to pose high health risks if consumed regularly and in high amounts too. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), some studies link consumption of palm oil to increased ischemic heart disease mortality, raised low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other adverse conditions.

Contrary to this, unsaturated fats, as seen in spreads like mayonnaise, increase good cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.
As a medically favored healthy spread, mayonnaise is largely made up of soybean oil, with unsaturated fats that help to control cholesterol levels and improve  skin and vision; vitamin E, which acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting the skin against harmful free radicals; as well as omega 3 fatty acids that help cell membranes, including the quite delicate and dangerous areas of the eyes and skin.  Mayonnaise is made from eggs, which are a good source of protein such as homocysteine and vitamins (Vitamin A, C, selenium). It is particularly important for the growing and middle-aged population, as it helps with muscle and bone development, brain, immune system and vision. It is also beneficial for the elderly population as nutrition becomes a challenge when persons age due to a reduction in food choices.

Beyond the nutritious composition of mayonnaise, its versatility makes it highly desirable. The healthy spread can be used in multiple ways – as a dip, a spread over sandwiches, bread or other snacks, and as dressing for salads. Even more interestingly, a number of recipes can be made out of the combination of mayonnaise and other ingredients, which tastes well with chicken wings, bread loaves, salads, fish and other seafood.

Although many other factors, such as lifestyle and genetics, play a role in the development of cardiovascular diseases, heeding your health expert’s advice on healthy food choices, maintaining moderation in food choice selection and focusing on lifestyle changes that are possible to improve overall health and well-being would go a long way in impacting your heart health and overall well-being.

Ex. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair blasts Joe Biden’s decision to leave Afghanistan

Former UK prime minister, Tony Blair has blasted US president, Joe Biden’s ‘imbecilic’ decision to leave Afghanistan.

According to Tony Blair the US’ military exit was not in the West or Afghanistan’s interest.

Blair who took the UK to war in the country 20 years ago, called the pull out ‘tragic, dangerous and unnecessary’, adding that the move had ‘every Jihadist group round the world cheering’.

In a 2,700 word article on the threat of ‘radical Islam’, Blair said there will be a reversal of gains made during the occupation, with the Taliban reasserting itself across most of the country in recent days.

As the clock runs down on the August 31 deadline, he said Britain has a ‘moral obligation’ to stay until ‘all those who need to be are evacuated’.

61226b0fabd08

He then issued a stark warning to current UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson that the manner of the US’s handling of the exit indicated that the UK could be relegated from the top division of international powers, with reports that Britain was largely kept in the dark about when American armed forces would leave.

Blair said: ‘For Britain, out of Europe and suffering the end of the Afghanistan mission by our greatest ally with little or no consultation, we have serious reflection to do.

‘We don’t see it yet, but we are at risk of relegation to the second division of global powers.’

Blair urged for there to be ‘no repetition of arbitrary deadlines’ – a reference to Washington’s Doha agreement with the Taliban, committing to vacate Afghanistan before the 9/11 anniversary .

Blair said: ‘We must evacuate and give sanctuary to those to whom we have responsibility – those Afghans who helped us and stood by us and have a right to demand we stand by them.

‘There must be no repetition of arbitrary deadlines.

‘We have a moral obligation to keep at it until all those who need to be are evacuated.

‘And we should do so not grudgingly but out of a deep sense of humanity and responsibility.’

Blair then defended his own decision making in 2001 when he worked with former US president George Bush and Nato allies to avenge the New York World Trade Centre attack by invading Afghanistan.

‘There is no doubt that in the years that followed we made mistakes, some serious.

‘But the reaction to our mistakes have been unfortunately further mistakes.

‘Today we are in a mood which seems to regard the bringing of democracy as a utopian delusion and intervention virtually of any sort as a fool’s errand.

‘The world is now uncertain of where the West stands because it is so obvious that the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan in this way was driven not by grand strategy but by politics.

‘We didn’t need to do it. We chose to do it.

‘We did it in obedience to an imbecilic political slogan about ending “the forever wars”, as if our engagement in 2021 was remotely comparable to our commitment 20 or even 10 years ago, in circumstances in which troop numbers had declined to a minimum and no allied soldier had lost their life in combat for 18 months.’

‘We need to draw up a list of incentives, sanctions, actions we can take including to protect the civilian population so the Taliban understand their actions will have consequences.

‘This is urgent. The disarray of the past weeks needs to be replaced by something resembling coherence and with a plan that is credible and realistic.’

The boy who is a twin had left for the park for football training. In the evening, efforts to trace the young boy proved futile. One of his friends called Tweneboa informed the parents that they saw him in the company of the sports commentator and footballer “Fire Man”.

Gyamfi became a suspect after he denied seeing the boy upon being confronted. After the boy’s parents visited the footballer’s home and saw that it was locked, they invited some boys in the area to break into the room only to find the body of Louis Agyemang Junior lying prostrate in cold blood with his head slashed away.

Taliban issues warning to US and UK against extension of ‘troops withdrawal deadline’

The Taliban have warned the US and UK that they will not allow the Afghanistan evacuation mission by Western forces to run beyond an August 31 deadline, threatening there will be consequences if the date is extended.

Military Forces are due to leave the country on August 31 under a military withdrawal agreement and, in practice, evacuation efforts will need to cease before then to allow time for military personnel to safely leave.

There are attempts by the UK and US to airlift people out of the country but the new report has raised the prospect that thousands could be left behind in the war torn country.

Several sources from the Taliban have told reporters no formal approach for an extension has been made but should it come, they will not permit Western forces to remain in Kabul beyond the August 31 withdrawal date.

Any attempt to stay beyond the date will ‘provoke a reaction’, a senior spokesperson for the Islamist group warned.

The comments come after the UK prime minister, Boris Johnson said he could work with the US and other European leaders to stay on the ground beyond the end of the month.

Taliban warns US and UK against extending troops withdrawal deadline beyond this month

US forces numbering 6000, supported by 1,000 British soldiers and more from other allies, continue to hold part of the Kabul airport with Taliban fighters permitting the Western nations to airlift people out of the country.

Taliban spokesperson ??Suhail Shaheen told Sky News the date is ‘a red line’.

He said: ‘President Biden announced that on 31 August they would withdraw all their military forces. So if they extend it that means they are extending occupation while there is no need for that.

‘It will create mistrust between us. If they are intent on continuing the occupation it will provoke a reaction.’

British armed forces minister James Heappey told Sky News: ‘Whether or not the US can be persuaded to stay is a matter for the prime minister tomorrow in the G7 meeting after the initial overtures made by both the foreign secretary and the defence secretary in the days previous.’

‘The conversation with the Taliban will then follow, and the Taliban will have a choice: they can either seek to engage with the international community and show that they want to be a part of the international system, they want to be engaged in international diplomacy, or they can turn around and say there is no opportunity for an extension.

‘I think everybody has to be clear that this is not just a discussion that happens between G7 leaders tomorrow, it is a discussion which happens with the Taliban.’

At least 20 have died in shootings and stampedes ‘in and around the airport, according to Nato since the Taliban took over the city of Kabul

Terry McDermott, Ex-Liverpool star, diagnosed with dementia

Ex-Liverpool star, Terry McDermott has become the latest football legend to be diagnosed with dementia

The 69-year-old, who made 329 appearances and scored 81 goals for the club between 1974 and 1982, has announced he is in the early stages of Lewy Body dementia following hospital tests.

McDermott said: “I’ve got to get on with it and I will. It’s the way I’ve been brought up. Nothing has come to me easily. I’m not frightened of taking it on and also, as we’ve seen, there are a lot of former players in a worse state than me.

“Battling is second nature. The worst thing was, until my condition was diagnosed you don’t know what’s going on. The number of ex-players being diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s is frightening.”

He was signed by Bob Paisley from Newcastle in November 1974 and went on to lift four league titles, three European Cups, a UEFA Cup and two League Cups for Liverpool.

McDermott was also the recipient of the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards in 1980.

He was present at Anfield on Saturday for Liverpool’s Premier League fixture with Burnley and is keen to maintain his attendance at Jurgen Klopp’s side’s matches.

“I’ve been looking forward to going down to Anfield and seeing the lads, people I have known for years and having a good craic with them,” he said. “Thankfully there are games coming up regularly now which I can go to.”

McDermott is considered one of the greatest midfielders in the club’s history.

The tragic news coming just days after Manchester United icon Denis Law also announced he has the brain disease.

US Air Force F-15 defends 900 US troops stationed in Syria when the Iranian drone struck

A US Air Force F-15 fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that posed a threat to troops stationed in eastern Syria

‘Coalition aircraft successfully engaged and defeated a UAS through air to air engagement in the vicinity of Mission Support Site Green Village,’ US Army Colonel Wayne Marotto, who heads the US-led coalition against ISIS, told Reuters, using an acronym for an unmanned aircraft system.

Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson said an F-15E shot the ‘Iranian’ drone, which flew ‘too close’ to the 900 US troops in the area on Satuday, according to a tweet citing US officials.

Green Village is an outpost where US troops are housed in former oil industry villas next to a major Syrian oil field, according to the Washington Post.

Officials also told Aviation Week that the drone was ‘deemed a threat and self-defense measures were taken.’

The Pentagon last month said it was deeply concerned about attacks on U.S. personnel in Syria and Iraq.

Just last month, two US service members were wounded after 14 rockets hit an Iraqi airbase hosting US forces, according to Reuters.

Iraqi militia groups aligned with Iran had vowed to retaliate after US strikes on the Iraqi-Syrian border killed four of their members in June.

The latest show of force in Syria comes after US withdrawal from Afghanistan, where the terrorist Taliban have taken over most of the country.

Ugas was only drafted in on 10 August for the Las Vegas fight to replace the injured Errol Spence Jr. It was Pacquiao’s first bout since beating Keith Thurman for the WBA welterweight title in July 2019.

“I don’t know,” said Pacquiao, 42, when asked if it was his final fight. “I need to relax and make a decision.”

The eight-division world champion, who now has a record of 62 wins, eight defeats, and two draws, added: “That’s boxing.

“I had a hard time in the ring making adjustments. My legs were tight. I’m sorry I lost tonight, but I did my best.”

Ugas dominated with his jab and clean punching to win on all three cards – 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112 – at the T-Mobile Arena.

“I’m very excited but most of all, I want to thank Manny Pacquiao for giving me this opportunity in the ring today,” said Ugas, who now has a record of 27 wins and four defeats.

“We only had two weeks of training but I listened to my corner and it all worked out.

“I told you I am the champion of the WBA and I showed it tonight. A lot of respect for [Pacquiao], but I won the fight.”

The Filipino boxing legend, who is a serving politician in his native Philippines, was stripped of the WBA title in January because of inactivity.

Military experts believe the photos were released to show the western world they should no longer be seen as untrained foot soldiers.

They also believe the photos were released to show the western world that they now had modern military capabilities and were n the country to stay for the long haul.

Whether these soldiers are new recruits or they were members of Afghanistan special forces who were converted is not yet known.

Warning: Lagos is sinking !

There is cause to worry about the possibility of Lagos being submerged by water in the not-too-distant future. Such an apprehension is borne not just because of the series of projections and reports tending towards such doomsday scenario, but also because recent rainfall and its effect on the country’s commercial nerve centre and former federal capital reasonably point to the beginning of the projections. For instance, the torrential downpour about five weeks ago submerged vehicles on Marina and other parts of Lagos Island including Lekki, buttressing the growing apprehension about a possible sea level rise and how it could submerge Lagos and other coastal cities in Nigeria.

The ugly scenario is no longer mere conjecture but a reality based on climate change projections and its disastrous effects around the world. Sea level rise could sink Lagos, already in a low topography compared to the sea. How to protect lives, properties and infrastructure is of critical importance. Lagos Island, by geographic calculation, is one of the fastest sinking cities that might go down in about 2050. There are about 10 such cities and Lagos is one of them as noted by the Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) at a news conference lately.

Some other independent reports tend to strengthen the projection. They include a report by Climate Central, a scientific organization based in New Jersey, United States, published in the journal, Nature Communications, that shows that half of 300 million people currently living in areas that are flooded at least once a year, would be submerged by high tide line by 2050. At risk are large proportions of heavily populated coastal cities like Lagos, which is home to more than 18 million people and could be entirely under water in the next 30 years.

Also, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) not long ago, raised the alarm that Lagos and other coastal cities that are less than one metre above sea level could be submerged by 2050 if the ocean surge continues. The submission corroborates a projection made by United Nations scientists working on climate change, who, after extensive studies, said there is the likelihood of the world’s oceans rising by one metre between 2030 and 2050.

Consequently, cities that are less than one metre above sea level are under threat of submergence. Lagos and many Nigeria’s coastal towns and cities are in this category besides the oil industry infrastructure in the Niger Delta region. Such highly probable scenario has strengthened the fears of climate scientists that the world may be headed for disaster of catastrophic dimension except urgent measures are taken to mitigate the impacts.

Incidentally in Lagos, many activities taking place in the Atlantic, such as creating more megacities like Banana Island, Eko Atlantic City and Lekki are believed to constitute potential threat to the safety of the state. The dredging or sand-filling in these places disturb the ecosystem equilibrium.

There may not be a clear cut solution for now; but prevention is better than cure. Lagos authorities should take care of drainage channels. Floodwater harvesting should be an option. The authorities should think out of the box on how to manage destructive flood waters. But this is equally a task for the federal government, given the role and status of Lagos to the country. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study should be carried out based on simulated sea level rise to ascertain the possible impact of submergence on Lagos and other coastal communities in Nigeria.

Nigeria should collaborate with countries on the Atlantic seaboard of West Africa with the aim of finding a common ground. There should be massive investment in coastal barriers – levees and embankments – to shield inland settlements from the ocean. Lagos State has reportedly earmarked N36 billion to tackle the menace, but that alone cannot avert the disaster. The country needs systematic development control measures to prevent indiscriminate development in coastal flood plains that block natural passage of water, bearing in mind that water will find its level.

Among others, strong environmental regulatory measures are required to enforce the law. People must adapt to the emerging reality. Compromising on this would be disastrous. There should be no room for complacency or undue politicking over this very important matter that borders on survival. Government must be strong to be able to tackle this challenge.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise in 2015, at a summit on Climate Change at the UN headquarters in New York, that Nigeria was committed to the adoption of a legally binding universal agreement to mitigate climate change should be matched with concrete action at home without further delay. In this regard, caution should be exercised in the plan to develop three islands, namely: Diamond, Orange and Gracefield Phoenix islands beside the Eko Atlantic City project. Reason is that these islands will involve the reclamation of large expanse of land in the designated areas, which may divert the flow of water into human settlement.

Proper environmental impact assessment (EIA) should be carried out to determine the degree of impact the artificial islands would have on coastal and marine ecosystem. The impacts should be ascertained beforehand to prevent disaster. There should be development control along the beaches. Lagos and the Federal Government need to collaborate and work proactively at eliminating or reducing the danger of Lagos being submerged.

South Africa: 4-year-old kid mauled to death by 2 pit bulls

A 4-year-old girl, Banele Shelembe, has been attacked and killed by two pit bulls in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Shelembe from the Mvundlweni area at KwaMnyandu, Elandskop was with three older children when the dogs from the area attacked her on Wednesday afternoon, August 18.

They had been sent to the shop to buy salt by her mother. During the attack the three other children managed to run away and call for help.

Speaking to The Witness on Friday, Banele’s mother Jabu Mncibi, narrated how she watched helplessly as her daughter was mauled to death by the dogs.

“I heard the children that Banele went to the store with screaming and shouting that my baby had been attacked by the dogs. One grabbed her by the neck and the other on the leg. I couldn’t do anything and I pleaded for help as I watched my baby being dragged. She died on the spot,” said Mncibi wiping her tears.

She said the other children managed to escape. Mncibi added that she wants the dogs to be put down in front of her, just as they killed her child in front of her.

Jabu described Banele as a bubbly and loving child. She also said it she is having flashbacks of the incident.

Confirming the incident, Plessislaer police spokesperson, Sifiso Gwala, said an inquest case has been opened.

“The pit bulls were taken by SPCA (National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). People who have dogs must make sure that their homes are properly fenced and also that they are kept on a leash.” he stated.

USA: Thunder and lightning kills 550 sheep on mountain

Local residents were left shocked after more than 500 sheep were found dead after reportedly being hit by a single lightning strike while grazing on a mountain pasture in southern Georgia.

According to news reports, Nikolay Levanov, a sheep owner, received a distressing phone call from his sheepherder that told him over a hundred of his sheep had been killed in a thunderstorm.

Levanov later discovered that along with his own herd, 400 other sheep had also been killed by the same strike.

Luckily, the sheepherder was only knocked unconscious by the lighting and was able to recover.

Shocking footage captured at the scene shows hundreds of sheep carcasses laying dead.

Levanov and the other sheep owners have appealed to Georgian authorities for financial assistance to help with their mass losses, but they said a scientific commission had to determine if the lightning was definitely the cause of death.

“To be honest, this is the first such case. We have not heard that a thunderstorm could kill so many sheep,” the deputy mayor of Ninotsminda, Alexander Mikeladze, said.

“Of course, the mayor’s office will provide support, but first, the farmer himself must bring the opinion of experts in order to accurately determine the cause of the mass death.”

It was announced that the 550 sheep were to be burned on the site, as mountainous terrain made it difficult to transport them away.

“Apostle Suleman Slept With Me Twice, Gave Me N500,000” – Nollywood Actress, Ifemeludike

The actress and producer, who has been in the Nollywood industry for nine years, revealed that she had no idea that the man of God was quite prominent at the time she had an intercourse with him.

A Nollywood actress and human rights’ activist, Chioma Ifemeludike, has disclosed that the Senior Pastor and General Overseer, Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Johnson Suleman, paid her over N500,000 and had sex with her.

Chioma on her Instagram page recalled that the first deal of her encounter of romp sex with the man of God was sealed through a hookup by another lady, Linda Clems, noting that at the second time, she clearly recognised him because they exchanged numbers during the first romp and communicated thereafter.

She said, “Dear @lyndaclems, I have to tell the world about that hookup you arranged between @johnson_suleman_official and myself on the 20th November 2016 in a hotel at Ikeja, the Apostle secretly gave me his number and we had a second meeting at Oriental Hotels Lagos.

“I’m sorry my conscience can’t hold it anymore. I encourage you to tell the truth as a mother and a Christian, to put the devil to shame and save millions of souls being misled. To my family and friends, I am sorry, don’t judge me. Please pray for me so the light of God will continue to expose every work of darkness in my life and the church of God.”

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, Chioma noted that her public confession came after her spirit continued to torment her, and she needed to make restitution for her sin.

“Good morning Nigerians. I have a confession. On the 20th of November 2016, Linda made an arrangement for me to come to Ikeja and that we’re going to meet her sister’s friend, and a family friend going to America.

“That was what she told me. Okay, so it was supposed to be a hookup. But it wasn’t really exactly put like that. Well, she told me that a family friend of hers wanted to meet someone nice and cool. And that he was going to America that same night and that he wasn’t going to waste much time and he wanted me to meet that person. And I said fine.

“2016 was immediately after my graduation from Anambra State University, I was preparing for my youth service,” she stated.

SaharaReporters had also reported in February 2021 that a former pastor of the Omega Fire Ministries, Mike Davids, accused Suleman, of sleeping with his wife.

He had added he was ready to expose the truths behind Stephanie Otobo’s sex scandal.

The case of Otobo, a Canada-based singer, came up in 2017 and 2018 when she accused Suleman of sexual relationship – a controversial scandal that plagued the church and attracted the attention of Nigerians for months.

Davids in a video had noted that he and Suleman both knew how they got Otobo to come to the church in Auchi, and apologise over the scandal and how they persuaded her mother too. Davids had accused Suleman of sleeping with his wife, Faith Edeko, who currently heads an Abuja branch of the church.

He had said, “I left the church (Omega Fire Ministries) of my freewill. You were never the one who sent me out of that ministry. I was tired of your ungodliness as a leader. And that was the major reason I left that ministry. So, forget those manipulations and cheap lies.

“We all know the part I played in the Stephanie Otobo saga. You know as much as I do. How much involved I was in bringing that saga to a halt. I don’t even need to mention names. You knew how we got Stephanie Otobo to come to the altar and apologise to mama (Suleman’s wife) and brought Stephanie Otobo’s mother to Auchi.

“I am coming to that issue because you are pushing me to that extent, Apostle Johnson Suleman as much as I knew what happened. Thirdly, I am also aware that my account has been frozen. You have also released policemen to get me arrested.

“You have 48 hours to ask those who are blocking my account to unblock it. You will not like what is going to follow.”

In January 2018, Otobo accused Suleman of impregnating her and breaching a promise to marry her.

She claimed she had sex romps with the pastor in Italy, New York and Nigeria.

Suleman denied the allegations and threatened to sue SaharaReporters for reporting the story.

He also threatened Festus Keyamo, whose law office in Lagos represented Otobo, demanding an apology and the payment to him of N1 billion for blackmail and injury.

Otobo however said she had pictures of him exposing his private parts, evidence of which it said would emerge in court.

In March 2017, SaharaReporters also released a report on how Suleman, who was at the center of an adultery scandal, gave a $76,000 brand-new Mercedes-Benz 450 GL to Nollywood star Daniella Okeke in 2016.

Ms. Okeke was previously named by Otobo, Apostle Suleman’s estranged lover, as being one of the other women in his life.

For her part, the actress in 2016 proudly displayed the Mercedes-Benz SUV GL 450 on her Instagram page in front of a brand-new house where she parked it.

After her name was revealed by Otobo at a press conference covered extensively by SaharaReporters, some Nigerians invaded Ms. Okeke’s Instagram questioning the source of her wealth given that she had not featured in any prominent movies in recent years.

The more inquisitive among them took advantage of a new website for vehicle registration in Lagos State which unveils the ownership of any vehicles by its number due to a bug on the web page, and discovered that one of Okeke’s most prized possessions, the posh Mercedes-Benz car, was registered to “Apostle Suleman Johnson.”

Ex. Man U Player, Anderson accused of laundering £4.7M using cryptocurrencies

Former Manchester United midfielder, Anderson has been accused of laundering £4.7million through cryptocurrencies in Brazil.

The 33-year-old was named by Brazilian newspaper Globo as one of eight people under investigation by a state prosecutor into a scheme designed to divert 35 million Brazilian reals (£4.7m) from the state stock exchange and launder money using cryptocurrencies.

The state prosecutor did not name the individuals involved although Globo said it had confirmed Anderson was being investigated for his role in the scheme.

The report said the individuals under investigation had been accused of committing crimes including theft, belonging to a criminal organisation and the laundering of goods, property or valuables.

The investigation, named Crpytoshow, dates back to over a year ago, when the state prosecutor issued 13 search and seizure warrants in the region of Porto Alegre. Anderson’s apartment was one of the buildings that was searched.

Anderson told Globo he has been investing in cryptocurrencies since 2019 and confirmed his company had sold bitcoins to one of the companies involved but stressed he did not know the money had come from illegal sources.

Anderson’s lawyer, Julio Cezar Coitinho Junior, said Anderson ‘will prove he was a victim, not a participant’.

Anderson, 33, is from the southern Brazil city of Porto Alegre and began his career with local side Gremio in 2006 before moving to Porto two years later and then to United.

After leaving United in 2015, a year after spending a season on loan with Fiorentina, he returned to his home city to join Gremio’s fierce rivals Internacional.

The Globo report said the investigation claims the group embezzled 30million reals from the bank account of a large corporation via 11 electronic transfers to six companies in four Brazilian states.

The money was then allegedly laundered within Brazil and abroad via cryptocurrencies.

Anderson, who retired from football in 2020, spent seven years with United and scored in their shootout victory over Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final.

Arsenal confirms ?30m signing of midfielder Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid

The Norway international of 30 appearances could make his debut in the London derby against Chelsea on Sunday August 22.

Odegaard’s signing is Arsenal’s fourth summer recruit following the singing of defender Ben White, left-back Nuno Tavares from Benfica, midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht, with 23-year-old Aaron Ramsdale set to join too.

It takes the club’s spending to £102m as the Gunners aim to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League, which saw them miss out on European football for the first time in 25 years.

Cyber thieves steal nearly $100M of Cryptocurrency in Japan heist

Liquid, a top Japanese cryptocurrency exchange platform has been hit by hackers, with almost $100m (£73m) now estimated to have been stolen.

The company announced that some of its digital currency wallets have been “compromised” making it the second major theft of cryptocurrencies to take place recently.

Last week, digital token platform Poly Network was at the centre of a $600m heist.

‘Warm’ or ‘hot’ digital wallets are usually based online and designed to allow crypto users to access their cryptocurrencies more easily, while ‘cold’ wallets are offline and harder to access and therefore usually more secure.

“We are sorry to announce that #LiquidGlobal warm wallets were compromised, we are moving assets into the cold wallet,” the company said on Twitter on Friday, August 20.

According to reports around $97m in cryptocurrencies had been taken, mainly Bitcoin and Ethereum tokens.

Liquid has said that it was tracing the movement of the stolen cryptocurrencies and working with other exchanges to freeze and recover the assets.

Liquid operates in over 100 countries and serves millions of customers around the world. It was founded in 2014.

Liquid is not the only Japanese cryptocurrency platform to be hit by a major heist.

In 2014, Tokyo-based exchange MtGox collapsed after almost half a billion dollars of bitcoin went missing, while Coincheck was hacked in a $530m heist in 2018.

Ex-Afghanistan women’s captain advises players to delete their social media and burn their kits for their safety

The former captain of the Afghanistan women’s football team has advised her fellow players to delete social media, erase public identities and burn their kits for safety’s sake after the Taliban takeover.

Khalida Popal, who is now based in Denmark, said in a video interview on Wednesday, August 18, that the militants had killed, raped, and stoned women in the past and female footballers were scared of what the future may hold.

Popal, a co-founder of the Afghan women’s football league, said she had always used her voice to encourage young women “to stand strong, to be bold, to be visible” but now had a different message.

“Today I’m calling them and telling them, take down their names, remove their identities, take down their photos for their safety. Even I’m telling them to burn down or get rid of your national team uniform,” she said.

“And that is painful for me, for someone as an activist who stood up and did everything possible to achieve and earn that identity as a women’s national team player.

“To earn that badge on the chest, to have the right to play and represent our country, how much we were proud.”

Popal said football had enabled women to take a strong stand for their rights, and to defy those who would have them silenced. “They are so afraid. They are worried, they are scared, not only the players, but also the activists … they have nobody to go to, to seek protection, to ask for help if they are in danger,” she said of the situation now.

“They are afraid that any time the door will be knocked.”

“What we are seeing is a country collapsing,” she added. “All the pride, happiness to be there to empower women and men of the country is like it was just wasted.”

A spokesperson for Fifa said the world football body shared “concern and sympathy with all those affected by the evolving situation.

“We are in contact with the Afghanistan football federation, and other stakeholders, and will continue to monitor the local situation and to offer our support in the weeks and months to come.”

During their 1996-2001 rule, guided by Islamic law, the Taliban stopped women from working. Girls were not allowed to go to school and women had to wear burqas to go out, and then only when accompanied by a male relative.

Women who broke the rules, suffered humiliation and public beatings by the Taliban’s religious police.

7 Russians sanctioned over poisoning of Russian activist Alexei Navalny by the UK Govt.

The UK has frozen assets and imposed travel bans on seven Russian nationals linked to the poisoning of Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny.

Navalny – a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin almost died from a nerve agent attack last year.

He and his team accused Putin of ordering the attack, allegations the Kremlin denies, even though NATO, the EU and the US have categorically stated that Russia was behind the nerve attack.

Navalny was rearrested when he attempted going back to the country this year, and he has been in prison since.

The UK Foreign Office on Friday, August 20, said the sanctions, taken with the US, targeted those “directly responsible for planning or carrying out the attack”.

All seven of the individuals targeted are members of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), it added.

UK Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab said: “We are sending a clear message that any use of chemical weapons by the Russian state violates international law, and a transparent criminal investigation must be held.

“We urge Russia to declare its full stock of Novichok nerve agents.”

The term Novichok is a group of nerve agents developed in a lab by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. They paralyse muscles and can lead to death by asphyxiation.

Navalny, 45, was exposed to one such nerve agent on a flight from Tomsk, Siberia, to Moscow on 20 August 2020. By the time the plane landed, he could not speak and was taken directly to hospital.

He was later transferred to a hospital in Berlin, Germany, where he spent a further 32 days recovering, including 24 days in intensive care.

North Koreans warned to refrain from discussing Kim Jong-Un’s Weight Loss

North Korea has warned citizens to refrain from discussing Kim Jong Un’s weight loss as gossip is a ‘reactionary act’.

The warning comes after pictures of the leader looking increasingly thin caused a stir when he made his first appearance following a prolonged absence in June.

Government officials are now insisting that the 37-year-old ruler, commonly referred to as the ‘Highest Dignity’ by state media, is not only perfectly healthy but has in fact lost weight as a result of worrying about his people and their ongoing food shortages, which has been blamed on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Spreading rumours about the Dignity’s health is regarded as treason by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), an unnamed insider has disclosed to the US-backed news outlet Radio Free Asia.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “As stories of health problems related to the Highest Dignity’s weight loss spread among the residents, many of the neighbourhood watch units here in Chongjin made official statements to the people at their weekly meeting, saying that it is a ‘reactionary act’ to talk about the leader’s health.

“The neighbourhood watch units also said the sudden weight loss is not due to a health problem, but rather that he is suffering in solitude for the sake of the country and people in crisis.”

Some at the meeting claimed to be ‘heartbroken’ to learn their leader was suffering alone in the face of the nationwide crisis – but according to the insider they were only saying what the officials present at the meeting wanted to hear.

Another source, residing in the city of Sariwon, south of the capital Pyongyang, also claimed that neighbourhood watch units there have warned people not to gossip about Kim’s health.

The second source, who requested anonymity for security purposes, said: “Although Sariwon did not convene an emergency meeting of residents to reassure them that the Highest Dignity is healthy, it did caution people in neighbourhood watch meetings not to mention his health.

“They emphasised that it is prohibited to share any stories about the health of the leader, who they said had become emaciated due to the piling up of national affairs.

“But public suspicion that he has health problems has not subsided.”

exiled Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s Daughter seen strolling in the US

The daughter of exiled Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has been spotted in the US after her father was forced to seek asylum in Dubai following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

Mariam Ghani, 42, was pictured during a leisurely walk with a friend on Thursday, August 19, after her father was given asylum in Dubai on ‘humanitarian grounds’ after fleeing Afghanistan in a helicopter that was allegedly filled with $169million in cash.

Ghani has been living in New York City for years, settling in a loft in a luxury co-op in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood, the New York Post reported.

The visual artist and filmmaker was born and raised in America, and has spent her adult life launching an art and teaching career.  Her work has been showcased in museums around the world, including the Tate Modern in London and the Guggenheim and MOMA in New York.

She studied at New York University and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. In 2018 she became a faculty member at Bennington College in Vermont.

Ghani grew up in ”exile” and was unable to travel to Afghanistan until 2002 when she was 24 years old, according to her Guggenheim biography.

Ghani, who has refused to speak with reporters about the ongoing takeover of Afghanistan, is encouraging Americans to advocate for the Afghans whose lives have and continue to be impacted by the Taliban’s insurgence in the country.

She posted on social media Tuesday answering the question: ‘What can we do to help Afghans right now?’

‘To everyone who has checked in and reached out in solidarity over the past days: thank you. It has meant a lot,’ she wrote, noting that she is ‘working feverishly to do anything [she] can on their behalf’.

Brazilian Bishop resigns after A video of him MASTURBATING leaks online

A Brazilian bishop resigned days after a video that featured someone, purported to be him, masturbating leaked online.

On Wednesday, August 18, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Tomé Ferreira da Silva, who oversaw a diocese in Sao Paulo state, Sao Jose do Rio Preto.

According to reports, Bishop Tome had been under investigation by the Vatican for other accusations, including allegedly ignoring reports of sexual abuse in his diocese since 2015.

The Vatican, the Brazilian bishops’ conference, and Ferreira’s home diocese all announced the resignation but provided no details if the bishop was the man in the video.

The person in the video resembles Ferreira, and local paper Diario da Regiao reported that in a short interview Ferreira confirmed it is his image, without providing further detail.

Local news network Globo reported in 2018 that the Sao Jose do Rio Preto diocese was the target of a Vatican investigation into whether Ferreira ignored reports of abuse, and had exchanged sexual messages with an adolescent.

At the time, he cited personal reasons while stepping down as regional coordinator of the Ribeirao Preto archdiocese, of which Sao Jose do Rio Preto forms part, and where he remained bishop.

In 2015, he was reportedly accused of taking a large amount of money from the church and giving it to his driver, with whom he allegedly had a romantic relationship.

The Vatican reportedly launched an investigation at the time, and he denied the claims.

The pope on Wednesday named as his temporary replacement Archbishop Moacir Silva of Ribeirao Preto.

Nairobi: 100 prostitutes have been arrested after traders complained “they are distracting customers”

At least 100 commercial sex workers were arrested in Nairobi’s central business district on Thursday, August 19, after traders complained that they were constituiting a ‘nuisance.’

According to The Standard, the businessmen and women said the sex workers were operating in broad daylight near their shops, consequently distracting their would-be customers.

Police officers attached to Central post said the round-up was conducted by them and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) officers after numerous complaints were filed by traders in the CBD.

“The traders filed a number of complaints against the group, particularly sex workers whom they claimed were operating near their stalls,” a senior Central Police Station officer told The Standard.

The senior cop said Covid-19 crisis and the 10pm-4am curfew might have pushed sex workers to the streets during the day.

“Some of the women openly entice men walking on the streets. Several victims have complained of sexual harassment by a section of the sex workers, who pull them to corridors for negotiation.”

A section of traders in Nairobi vowed to stop remitting taxes to the county government if action won’t be taken against the sex workers. The business community even wrote a protest letter to that effect.

“The traders said the sex workers were using foul language near their shops, making their customers uncomfortable. The most affected businessmen and women are those operating on Duruma Road, and its neighbouring streets.” Police said

Central Day Nursery School on Ngariama Road had written a letter to the NMS and police complaining of sex workers’ presence outside the institution’s gate. The management said the twilight girls had littered the entrance to the school with cigarette sticks, miraa leaves and stem, among other unwanted matter.

Another facility that has filed complaints about the sex workers, is the House of Judah Church on Ndumberi Road.

“The sex workers even show up outside the church on Sundays, when congregants are entering or leaving the worship centre,” said a member of House of Judah Church.

Charles Rubia Road is the other area flocked by sex workers during daytime. According to the complainants, the women start their business as early as 7am.

NMS officer, William Kangogo, who is in charge of the operation to remove sex workers from the CBD and rid the town of beggars and muggers, said the exercise will last one month, and would be conducted randomly thereafter.

“The directive was issued by the National Government,” he said, adding that some of the people posing as beggars are foreigners who are in the country illegally. We are investigating who is housing the foreigners because we understand that some of the beggars, mostly those living with disabilities, are usually taken to Huruma every evening,” added Kangogo

Just IN: A desperate Afghan mum hands over her baby to an American soldier for evacuation

A heartbreaking footage of an Afghan mum handing her baby over a barbed wire to an American soldier for evacuation, has been shared online.

It was learnt that the woman handed over her baby to the American soldier, to free the child from Taliban rule.

Thousands are trying to leave Afghanistan via the city’s airport, Hamid Karzai International, and foreign embassies including the UK and US, have set up evacuation centres. Afghans eligible for evacuation will be airlifted away.

According to Reuters, a total of 12 people have been killed in and around Kabul’s airport since the Taliban took control of the capital on Sunday. An unnamed Taliban official said the deaths were caused either by stampedes or by gun shots in the area.

Afghan mothers throw their babies over the airport fence and begged British soldiers to take them to safety

Desperate Afghan mums have been filmed throwing their babies over barbed wire fences at the Kabul airport and begging British paratroopers to take them to safety.

Violent scenes have unfolded at one of the routes to Hamid Karzai International as people try to escape a future under the Taliban militant group.

The entrance to the Baron hotel has become the focal point where Afghans seeking refuge in the UK have been gathering in the hope of being able to escape the Taliban.

It is guarded by Parachute Regiment troops.

One officer told the Independent: “The mothers were desperate, they were getting beaten by the Taliban.

“They shouted, ‘save my baby’ and threw the babies at us.

“Some of the babies fell on the barbed wire. It was awful what happened.

“By the end of the night there wasn’t one man among us who was not crying.”

Another senior military officer spoke about the scenes to Sky News.

He said: “It was terrible, women were throwing their babies over the razor wire, asking the soldiers to take them, some got caught in the wire.

“I’m worried for my men, I’m counselling some, everyone cried last night.”

The UK is currently evacuating British citizens and Afghans who worked for the government during the 20-year-war.

The route to the Baron Hotel also leads to the facilities of other countries which are carrying out evacuations, and the numbers of those desperate to get away are growing by the day as even those without paperwork beg to be airlifted to a place of safety.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the armed forces cannot take youngsters without their families.

However, he offered reassurance that the UK government is continuing to load families onto planes departing Kabul airport and will continue “rolling through that process”.

He said that as he was speaking, troops were loading 120 families on to a plane to depart, with another 138 set to leave a few hours later.

He said: “It is a 24-hour airport now for military planes and they are getting through.

“Obviously we cannot just take a minor on their own and it is difficult, but you will find, I think if you see in the footage, the child is taken – that will be because the family will be taken as well.

“It will be the challenge of trying to make it through the crowd. We are finding other ways of dealing with that, but that is what is happening.”

Ex. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani denies carrying loads of cash to Dubai

Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has finally broken his silence after leaving his country to escape the Taliban militants.

Ghani ran for his life as Taliban forces entered Kabul on Sunday, August 15.

Speaking from exile today, in his first public comment since it was confirmed he is in the United Arab Emirates, Ghani said he had left Kabul to prevent bloodshed and denied reports he took large sums of money with him as he departed the presidential palace.

‘What had happened 25 years ago in Afghanistan was going to take place again. That was something that needed to be avoided, a shameful development like that,’  Ghani said in a video streamed on Facebook on Wednesday, his first public comments since it was confirmed he was in the UAE.

‘The dignity of Afghanistan was important for me, and that was to be ensured, so I had to leave Afghanistan in order to present bloodshed, in order to make sure that a huge disaster (was) prevented.’

He said: ‘When it comes to the political leadership of the Taliban, it was a failure on their part and a failure on our part that the negotiations did not lead to anything, the peace process should lead to the end of war.’

“I left on the advice of government officials, he added.

“Kabul should not be turned into another Yemen or Syria overpower struggles so I was forced to leave,” Ghani said.

Earlier reports had suggested that Ghani fled with $169million in his cash-stuffed helicopter and has been given asylum in Dubai on ‘humanitarian grounds’.

But he said there was no truth to allegations that he escaped with ‘suitcases of cash’, saying it was all part of a ‘personality assassination’.

“I left with just a waistcoat and some clothes. The personality assassination against me has been ongoing, saying that I have taken money with me,” Ghani said in the video.

“The accusations are baseless lies. You can even ask customs officials – they are baseless.”

Ghani also stated that he hopes to return home, after fleeing to the United Arab Emirates, while adding that he supported talks between the Taliban and top former officials.

‘Currently, I am in the UAE so that disasters are avoided. I’m in consultation with others until I (can) return so that I can continue my efforts for justice for the Afghans.’   He noted he had ‘no intention’ to remain in exile.

The address comes after at least three people were killed in anti-Taliban protests in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Wednesday as the Islamist group moved to consolidate power.

Ghani has been bitterly criticised by former ministers for leaving the country suddenly as Taliban forces entered Kabul on Sunday.

‘He is no longer a figure in Afghanistan,’ Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman told reporters as she declined to comment on the United Arab Emirates’ decision to grant him asylum.

‘I have been fighting diabetes for 35 years’ – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that he has been battling diabetes for the past 35 years.

Obasanjo made the disclosure at the closing ceremony of the Ogun State Diabetes Youth Development Camp, held in Abeokuta, Ogun state on Wednesday August 18.

The former President who reiterated that diabetes is not a killer disease, told children to abstain from consuming sugar, foods with carbohydrates and always take their insulin injection in order to manage the disease well.

He said;

“I have been diagnosed of diabetes for more than 35 years now and here I am, I’m still going about, I’m still jumping up and down, I’m still doing many things many people of my age cannot do.

“Since I was diagnosed of diabetes, a number of my friends have died and the reason is because they just did not manage their diabetes the way they should manage it.

“It does not matter whether you are type one or type two, so far there is no cure for diabetes, maybe there will be cure before I die, but I pray that there will be cure before you die.

“You have to understand the type of food you should eat, you must completely abstain from sugar. The amount of carbohydrates that you take must be watched.

“Don’t miss your drugs, in your own case, your insulin injection, I take my drugs along with me everywhere I go and I always check my blood sugar level regularly.

“Don’t let anybody put fear in your minds, diabetes, has no cure for now, but it can be managed.”

The Talibans threaten CNN reporter Clarissa Ward and her crew with ‘pistol whip’ (video)

CNN has released footage showing its chief international correspondent, Clarissa Ward and her crew being attacked by Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

Clarissa reported that Taliban militants were prepared to “pistol whip” a field producer for the network before a fellow fighter intervened and prevented an attack.

Narrating the ordeal people pass through while trying to go to the Kabul airport to leave the country, Ward said the Taliban were ready to pistol whip her producer with one telling her to cover her face bbefore she talks to him.

“Two Taliban fighters just came up with their pistols, and they were ready to pistol-whip him, and we had to intervene and scream, and it was actually another Taliban fighter who came in said, ‘No, no, no, don’t do that. They’re journalists,” Ms Ward reported from Kabul on Wednesday.

Describing the “most frightening moment” for the CNN crew, Ms Ward said Field Producer Brent Swails was filming with his iPhone when two Taliban fighters approached, ready to assault Mr Swails.

The rest of the CNN crew intervened along with another Taliban fighter who told the others not to attack the reporters.

“I’ve covered all sorts of crazy situations – this was mayhem,” Ms Ward said.

Describing the scene outside the Kabul airport, she said: “This was nuts. This is impossible for an ordinary civilian, even if they have their paperwork – no way they’re running that gauntlet, no way they’re going to be able to navigate that. It’s very dicey, it’s very dangerous and it’s completely unpredictable, there’s no order, there’s no coherent system for processing people, separating those with papers from those who don’t have papers.”

“Honestly, to me, it’s a miracle that more people haven’t been very, very, seriously hurt,” Ms Ward added.

“There was a consistent stream of gunfire,” Ms Ward said earlier describing the situation in the Afghan capital.

She added that her team was “accosted” by people asking for help to get out of the country.

“It’s so heartbreaking – everybody coming up to us with their papers, their passports, saying ‘please, I worked at Camp Pheonix, I worked at this camp, I was a translator, help me get in, help me get to America, help me get my SIV – my visa, to get out of the country’. And then the Taliban would just come through, at one stage, this fighter just lifted his gun up into the air as if he was about to start firing so we had to run and take cover,” Ms Ward recounted.

The Biden administration faces the daunting task of getting out tens of thousands of Americans and vulnerable Afghans still in the country before the official US withdrawal date of 31 August.

The Taliban on Sunday, August 15, declared the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan after conquering the capital of Kabul.

Former Chelsea star, Pedro has left Roma in order to join fierce rivals, Lazio, on a free transfer after just one season.

The former Spain International was surplus to requirements by new Roma boss José Mourinho, who was appointed in May. The Portuguese coach froze the ex-Barcelona man out of the first team and did not include him as one of his players for preseason.

Following Mourinho’s decision, the attacker accepted the option to join city rivals Lazio, where he reunites with his former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

Pedro underwent his medical with the Biancocelesti this afternoon at the Paideia Clinic and penned a two-year contract with the club. He was also presented with the number nine shirt.

In a recent article by Variety detailing the biggest movie stars salaries for recent projects, it was revealed that Smith’s salary for his role in King Richard was $40 million. This figure is noticeably higher than the typical paycheck for a movie star in a big project, which currently sits at around $20 million.

China mocks Taiwan after US withdrawal from Afghanistan

China has dragged Taiwan over the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, capitalizing on the crisis to taunt the self governed Island with threats of invasion.

Taiwan and mainland China have been governed separately since the end of a civil war more than seven decades ago, in which the defeated Nationalists fled to Taipei. But China views Taiwan, a democratic island of around 24 million people as an inseparable part of its territory, despite having never controlled Taiwan.

Recently, China’s ruling Communist Party called the US a fading global power. And now, the return of the Taliban to the streets of the Afghan capital is being touted by Chinese state media as the “death knell of US hegemony.”

“The fall of Kabul marks the collapse of the international image and credibility of the US,” a commentary from state news agency Xinhua said.

“Following the blows of the global financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic, the decay of the American hegemony has become an undisputed reality. Its failure in Afghanistan is another turning point in that spiral fall,” the statement added.

The Global Times, a tabloid run by the Government, which serves as a propaganda machine of the government, in its own statement described the “unreliability of US commitment to its allies,” suggesting the self-governing island of Taiwan could face the same fate as Afghanistan if they go to war with China.

“Once a war breaks out in the Taiwan Straits, the island’s defense will collapse in hours and the US military won’t come to help.” the Global Times said in an editorial.

The taunt from China coincides with air and naval drills launched Tuesday August 17, by the Chinese military, which sent fighter jets and warships near Taiwan in response to what it called the “repeated collusion in provocation” by Washington and Taipei.

Under President Xi Jinping, China has increased military activity around the island, in response to what it considers to be growing calls for formal independence. The US has also been selling weapons to Taiwan for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Following the collapse of Afghanistan to the Taliban, conversation has broken out across Taiwanese social media in recent days as to how the government in Taipei would respond in the event of a Chinese invasion, and whether the US would indeed come to the island’s defense.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang appeared to confront the Chinese threats directly, saying Taiwan’s leaders are “not afraid of being killed or imprisoned” by “powerful countries that want to swallow up Taiwan using force.”

Politicians in Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DDP) also dismissed attempts to draw parallels between Taiwan and Afghanistan.

“If we’re going to make Afghan comparisons, Taiwan survived that moment 40+ years ago. US troops left Taiwan in 1979 after recognizing the PRC,” Wen Lii, a local ruling party official, wrote on Twitter, referring to China by abbreviation of its official name the People’s Republic of China.

“So no, Taiwan is not Afghanistan,” he added.

Kolas Yotaka, spokesperson for Taiwan’s Presidential Office, said the “lazy comparisons…ignore the realities of both countries, and show little regard for the immense human suffering facing many in Afghanistan today.”

On R. Kelly trial: R.Kelly faces one of the accusers in court

The trial of US R&B singer, R. Kelly started at a court in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday, August 18, and details have started pouring in over what transpired during the hearing .

The ‘i believe I can fly’ hitmaker is accused of racketeering, sexual abuse and bribery; charges which he has repeatedly denied but could spend decades in jail if he is found guilty by the jury.

Some of the allegations made against the singer date back more than 20 years.

Kelly faces charges that he was the ringleader of a two-decade-long scheme where he recruited women and underage girls for sex.

Prosecutors described Mr Kelly as “a man who used lies, manipulation, threats and physical abuse to dominate his victims and to avoid accountability for years”.

“This case is about a predator,” Assistant US Attorney Maria Melendez said in her opening statement.

“This case is not about a celebrity who likes to party a lot.”

The first witness during the hearing, Jerhonda Johnson Pace, told the jury, R. Kelly knew she was underage (16) in 2009 when they had intercourse in Chicago, where the age of consent is 17, according to the New York Times.

Johnson Pace now 28, testified that she had initially told Kelly she was 19, but had revealed her real age on the day they had sex for the first time.

“I felt uncomfortable. I felt like it wasn’t right, that I should tell him my age.

“He asked me, ‘What is that supposed to mean?’ and told me to tell everyone I was 19 – and to act 21,” said Ms Pace, who admits she was a fan of the singer.

In her opening argument,  Kelly’s lawyer Nicole Blank Becker claimed the alleged victims are aggrieved groupies, who originally consented to sex before later becoming “spiteful”.

Ms Becker portrayed her client as a victim of women, saying some enjoyed the “notoriety of being able to tell their friends that they were with a superstar”.

Kelly was wearing a grey suit, purple tie, and glasses as he sat silently, with his head down at times as the prosecution opened its case.

Continuing her prosecution, Ms Melendez said Mr Kelly’s celebrity status meant he “had his pick of young fans” and that he hoarded his victims “like objects” and used “every trick in the predator handbook”.

She also alleged he bribed victims by photographing and filming them having sex and then threatening to release the tapes.

The trial of Kelly was delayed several times by the pandemic.

Even if he is acquitted, Mr Kelly still faces sex-related charges in Illinois and Minnesota, where he has also pleaded not guilty.

He has been in jail for the last two years.
