“Why I didn’t pick successor from 30-man list” – President Buhari

The President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has explained why he did not announce a successor before the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress which produced a national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, as the candidate.

Tinubu defeated Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and a former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, among other aspirants, to clinch the presidential ticket.

Speaking in Katsina when he paid a Sallah visit to the Emir of Katsina, Dr Abdulmumin Kabir, at his palace on Saturday, Buhari, who recalled the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the former Lagos State governor, said some party leaders initially gave him a list of 30 presidential aspirants, out of which he was asked to pick a candidate of his choice.

He, however, said he chose to allow the delegates to pick the candidate of their choice as making his preference known would affect Osinbajo.

The President, who spoke in Hausa, said, “I was given a list of 30 aspirants to pick from. Most of them were my ministers and governors. So, who will I choose or support? One of the governors even came to see me and asked who they were to choose. If I do that, it would affect my vice-president because he was listening to our conversation.

“I then told them to choose who they wanted. So, they elected Tinubu as the APC presidential candidate. I hope that the way they (APC) conducted their congress, where they elected the party’s national chairman, the presidential candidate and how the presidential candidate picked his running mate, the forthcoming (2023) general elections would also be peaceful. I hope God will help us to conduct the general elections peacefully.”

The President, who also recalled that he contested the presidential election on three occasions and visited virtually all the 774 local government areas in the country from 2003 to 2015, pleaded with Nigerians to allow peace to reign during the 2023 general elections.

He also said he hoped and fervently prayed for peaceful elections in 2023.

“May God give us the wisdom to serve people more,” he added.

The Emir of Katsina had while welcoming the President to the palace, urged him to expedite action on the Kano-Katsina highway, the Kano-Katsina-Maradi railway and the Rimi windmill power generation project.

The emir said apart from contributing to the development of Katsina State, the projects would also create employment for residents.

Also speaking, the state Governor, Aminu Masari, said security agencies were doing all they could to tackle banditry and other forms of crime in the state

Masari, who later saw the President off to the Umaru Musa Yar’dua Airport where he later took off for Abuja in a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, called on residents to give security agents the necessary support.

Cristiano Ronaldo not interested in £250M deal to join a Saudi Club

Superstar footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo has rejected the chance to join an unnamed Saudi Arabian club amid his uncertain future at Manchester United.

Ronaldo has been offered £250million in wages over the next two seasons to move to the Middle East, with the club also tabling a £25m bid to United. However Ronaldo will reject the chance to become the world’s highest-paid player in order to try and secure a move elsewhere, according to Sport Mail.

United manager Erik ten Hag has already made it clear that Ronaldo is in his plans, shutting down questions in his latest press conference when asked about the Portuguese striker.

Ronaldo has missed the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of Australia because of a family issue, but he’s been working individually in order to prepare for the new season.

The 37-year-old reportedly wants to play Champions League football next season. His aim is to compete for major trophies in a top league during the twilight years of his career .

Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are reportedly still interested.

Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 games last season following his return to Manchester after originally leaving the club for Real Madrid in 2009. United, however, finished sixth in the Premier League, failing to qualify for the Champions League, which is believed to the be the reason behind his desire to move.

Robert Lewandowski set to join Barcelona in a £42.5M deal

Barcelona have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the signing of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski for £42.5m (€50m).

The former Dortmund striker will fly to Miami on Sunday July 17, where Barcelona will begin their pre-season tour, for a medical before signing his three-year contract, which contains an option for a further 12 months.

The Poland international had just one year remaining on his Bayern contract and had told the club he would not renew his deal.

“I didn’t have much time to prepare for it. It all went very quickly to say goodbye to everyone!” Lewandowski told Sky Germany after agreeing his move.

“These eight years were special and you don’t forget that. I had a great time in Munich.

“I will fly soon but after the training camp I will come back and say goodbye properly and organise a few things. I said goodbye to the boys on the field today, I wasn’t worried about an injury in training. Something can happen to me at home. I wanted to keep fit and trained with the boys again.”

Lewandowski, who joined Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund  in 2014, scored 344 goals in 375 games for Bayern, including 98 over the past two seasons.

US is prepared to stop Iran from getting nuclear arms – Joe Biden says

US President, Joe Biden has pledged that the US might use its military to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Biden made the declaration with Israel’s Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Thursday, July 14 during the second day of his visit to Israel .

The US and Israel have long accused Iran of state-sponsored terrorism in the Middle East. Iran provides funding, training and weapons to Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah movement, and the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

US is prepared to stop Iran from getting nuclear arms

Iran denies that it sponsors terrorism and says the organisations it backs are resistance groups fighting Israeli and US aggression.

Israel considers the Iranian nuclear programme to be its greatest threat, as the Iranian regime sees Israel as an illegitimate nation, though Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.

US is prepared to stop Iran from getting nuclear arms

On Thursday, Biden outlined a series of strategic commitments underpinning the US relationship with Israel – its closest regional ally in a document known as the Jerusalem US-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 12 TV , Mr Biden also said the US would be prepared to use force against Iran “if that was the last resort”.

He said the US was “prepared to use all elements of its national power” to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

He also pledged that the US would “work together with our other partners to confront Iran’s aggression and destabilising activities”, including Iran’s use of “terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad”.

While the US and Israel have repeatedly said they would never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, Joe Biden’s administration would rather get a nuclear deal with Iran through diplomacy although months-long talks aimed at getting a nuclear agreement back on track have stalled.

Israel wants Iran’s nuclear programme stopped altogether and has said it reserves the right to use force if it has to.

Biden was asked about voices in the Democratic Party who describe Israel as an apartheid state and call for an end to unconditional American military aid. Biden said those views were “few and wrong”, adding that there was no possibility of his party walking away from Israel.

US sends a Nigerian man to Prison for 8 years for fraudalent Schemes

U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang has jailed a Nigerian man, Oluwaseyi Akinyemi, a/k/a “Paddy Linkin”, a/k/a “Joseph Kadin”, for elderly fraud and Covid-19 Unemployment fraud scheme

Akinyemi, 35, of Hyattsville, Maryland, was sentenced on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, to eight years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release for two counts of mail fraud relating to a social media advanced fee fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims.

Judge Chuang also ordered Akinyemi to pay $486,119.07 in restitution to his victims.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Acting Special Agent in Charge Selwyn Smith of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore; Acting Special Agent in Charge Troy Springer, of the Washington Regional Office, U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General; and Chief Malik Aziz of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

“Akinyemi committed elder fraud and CARES Act COVID-19 fraud, which are both priorities for this Office,” said United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron.

“Akinyemi not only took advantage of a nursing care patient, a national health crisis, and an employment crisis, but he also caused financial harm to at least 13 elderly victims,”

According to his guilty plea, from July 10, 2018 to April 29, 2019, Akinyemi and at least one co-conspirator engaged in a social media based elder fraud scheme.

Members of the conspiracy targeted elderly victims on social media platforms, representing themselves as agents of both real and fictitious government agencies and offered victims non-existent financial rewards if the victims first sent cash, money orders, or gift cards to cover associated “taxes and fees.”

Conspirators even impersonated social media accounts of the victim’s friends to vouch for their fraudulent financial scheme. Believing that they would receive a financial reward, the victims sent cash, money orders, gift cards, and other valuable items through the mail to

Akinyemi as well as other members of the conspiracy in order to obtain a financial reward. Akinyemi, who lived in Landover, Maryland at the time, received packages under the aliases of Paddy Linkin,” “Flex,” “Joseph Kadin,” “Anna Marcos,” and other aliases.

After receiving the fraudulently obtained funds, Akinyemi kept a portion of the funds and provided the rest of the fraudulently obtained cash to co-conspirators in Nigeria.  Akinyemi admitted that this advance fee fraud scheme defrauded 13 victims from around the United States, ranging in age from 47 to 78 years old, of a total of $478,145.07.

For example, Victim 1, who was 78 years old and lived in Texas, received an application via social media to apply to a purported federal government grant program.  The application was accompanied by a message from a person whom Victim 1 believed was a friend, vouching for the program.

Victim 1 was told by members of the conspiracy that he had been approved for $100,000 in grant funds but would need to pay taxes before he could receive the grant funds.  As instructed by members of the conspiracy, Victim 1 sent multiple packages of money, including to Akinyemi.

To induce Victim 1 to continue to send money, members of the conspiracy sent Victim 1 electronic “certificates,” including a “Certificate of Completion” bearing the Internal Revenue Service seal, stating that it was from the “Federal and State Tax Institutes.”  Victim 1 also received a certificate with a U.S. flag on it with the words “Federal Grants” next to it which included Victim 1’s full name and the text: “Federal Government Grants for the sum of $5,000,000.”  After receiving these certificates, Victim 1 continued to send money to Akinyemi and other members of the conspiracy.  In total, Victim 1 sent between approximately $70,000 to $80,000 to Akinyemi.

Victim 2, who was 71 years old and lived in Indiana, received a message from someone they believed to be a high school friend regarding a “Strengthening Community Fund,” but was, in fact, a member of the conspiracy posing as the victim’s high school friend.  The conspiracy member told Victim 2 that they received money from the fund in the recent past and that there were different amounts for which a person could apply.  The member of the conspiracy then provided Victim 2 with the contact information for a fictitious agent representing the “Fund.”

After Victim 2 contacted and sought information regarding the Fund, a member of the conspiracy masquerading as an agent asked Victim 2 if they were ready to apply.  When Victim 2 communicated their desire to do so, the member of the conspiracy sought biographical information from Victim 2, including their monthly income.  Once Victim 2 provided this information, the member of the conspiracy informed Victim 2 that they had been “approved.”  Victim 2 applied for $80,000, which Victim 2 believed would cost $800 in fees.  Victim 2 sent a total of approximately $50,000 in fictitious fees and taxes in order to obtain money from the fictitious fund.

During an interview with law enforcement on April 25, 2019, Akinyemi confirmed that he had received packages from victims throughout the country, detailed the scheme to defraud, and informed investigators that individuals in Nigeria were responsible for soliciting the victims to send money to him.

Further, Akinyemi stated that he received approximately $80,000 in the mail in the year prior to his interview.  A subsequent review of Akinyemi’s phone revealed, among other things, photos of tracking numbers and dollar amounts, a receipt for a money order, and conversations with conspirators discussing the percentage of the proceeds Akinyemi would take for his participation in the conspiracy.

At least five victims suffered a substantial financial hardship as a result of the money that was fraudulently obtained by Akinyemi and his co-conspirators during the execution of the scheme.

According to his plea agreement, beginning in December 2020, Akinyemi and other co-conspirators also illegally obtained unemployment and CARES Act COVID-19 related benefits by filing fraudulent unemployment claims in the names of living and deceased victims from Maryland and Arizona.

Akinyemi and his co-conspirators used the mailing address of his Landover residence, as well as the home address of a Washington D.C. client to whom Akinyemi provided at-home nursing care services to receive the fraudulent unemployment insurance debit cards in the mail.

A total of nine unemployment insurance claims were filed using the address of Akinyemi’s D.C. nursing care client.  As stated in his plea agreement, 10 CARES Act Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (“PUA”) claims were filed with the state of Maryland using Akinyemi’s Landover residence as the mailing address, with an intended loss of more than $170,000.

In total, Akinyemi and his co-conspirators used the identities of 19 real individuals to file fraudulent CARES Act unemployment insurance and PUA claims, causing an actual loss of more than $7,000, and an intended loss of $250,000 in state and federal benefits.

On May 17, 2021, the Attorney General established the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force to marshal the resources of the Department of Justice in partnership with agencies across government to enhance efforts to combat and prevent pandemic-related fraud.

The Task Force bolsters efforts to investigate and prosecute the most culpable domestic and international criminal actors and assists agencies tasked with administering relief programs to prevent fraud by, among other methods, augmenting and incorporating existing coordination mechanisms, identifying resources and techniques to uncover fraudulent actors and their schemes, and sharing and harnessing information and insights gained from prior enforcement efforts.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended HSI, the DOL-OIG, and the Prince George’s County Police Department for their work in the investigation.  Mr. Barron thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Rajeev R. Raghavan, who is prosecuting the case.

ECOWAS court declares Twitter ban in Nigeria unlawful

A court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared the ban on Twitter in Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari as unlawful.

The court also ordered the Nigerian government led by Buhari not to repeat such, according to deputy director of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) Kolawole Oluwadare.

Nigeria banned Twitter in June 2021 after a tweet shared by Buhari’s account was deleted.

The ban lasted for 7 months and was lifted in January 2022.

But in the judgment delivered today, July 14, the ECOWAS court declared that it has the jurisdiction to hear the case and that the case was therefore admissible.

The court also held that the act of suspending the operation of Twitter is unlawful and inconsistent with the provisions of Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights both of which Nigeria is a state party.

“The Buhari administration in suspending the operations of Twitter violates the rights of SERAP and 176 concerned Nigerians to the enjoyment of freedom of expression, access to information and the media, as well as the right to fair hearing,” the court ruled.

The court also ordered the Buhari administration to take necessary steps to align its policies and other measures to give effect to the rights and freedoms, and to guarantee a non-repetition of the unlawful ban of Twitter.

The Court also ordered the Buhari administration to bear the costs of the proceedings and directed the Deputy Chief Registrar to assess the costs accordingly.

Reacting to the judgment, Femi Falana, SAN SERAP lawyer in the suit said, “We commend the ECOWAS Court for the landmark judgment in the case of SERAP v Federal Republic of Nigeria in which the Judges unanimously upheld the human rights of community citizens to freedom of expression, and access to information. Even though the Court had granted an interim order of injunction last year which restrained the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN from prosecuting Nigerians who defied the Twitter ban, SERAP deserves special commendation for pursuing the matter to a logical conclusion.”

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the country’s acting president on Friday, July 15, a government official said.

Wickremesinghe had already taken on the role after former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country on Wednesday, July 13, following months of anti-government protests.

Wickremesinghe, 73, took his oath of office before chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Wickremesinghe’s office said in a brief statement.

According to the constitution, the prime minister automatically becomes president in the event of a resignation.

Wickremesinghe on Friday asked legislators to work towards a consensus to establish an all-party government in the crisis-ridden country and said he would follow the constitutional process and establish law and order after months of anti-Rajapaksa protests.

Parliament will now meet on Wednesday to elect a politician to serve out the remainder of Rajapaksa’s term ending in 2024, with nominations due the previous day.

Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to financially support his son after he finished college

Arnold Schwarzenegger told his son Joseph Baena he would stop financially supporting him once he graduated college.

The 74-year-old Terminator star had helped his son get through college, something which Joseph said he is very grateful for.

However, after college, he told his son, “You’re on your own”.

Joseph, 24, is an aspiring actor and bodybuilder, but has entered into a different career to make ends meet.

He now has a job in real estate to allow him to support himself after finishing his studies. He works for the Los Angeles realty firm ARIA Properties.

Joseph told Unwaxed Podcast: “I needed a job, and I was not getting any of the acting roles that I thought I was going to get.

“I was like, ‘I need to do something’, so I started interning at this real estate company.”

He initially completed an internship with the company, hoping to learn as much as possible while earning money.

Joseph soon realised he enjoyed working in real estate and eventually got his license, allowing him to legally sell, broker, or rent real estate to prospective tenants and buyers.

Joseph said he still dreams of following in his dad’s footsteps and acting in big films while learning the trade.

He added: “I just love having a goal and then going for it.

“With acting, I know that my goal is to be a reputable actor and win some awards.”

Joseph is the son from Arnold’s affair with the Schwarzenegger family’s former housekeeper Mildred Baena. She was reportedly pregnant with Joseph at the same time Arnold’s ex-wife Maria Shriver was expecting their fourth child.

According to Adebanjo, he has lost confidence in Tinubu and it is the time of the South east to rule Nigeria.

Tweeting from his official handle on Wednesday afternoon, July 13, he said;

“I will rather support Obi than to support Bola, I have lost my confidence in him, and because we have overtime clamour for equity, fairness and justice, I think it is the time for the south east to rule, Peter Obi has my support.”

Errol, Elon Musk’s father, welcomes child with his stepdaughter

Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, 76, has secretly welcomed a second child with his 35-year-old stepdaughter, Jana Bezuidenhout.

Errol revealed to The Sun that he had a second unplanned child with his own step-daughter three years ago in 2019.

Errol was married to Jana’s mother, Heidi, when Jana was just 4. Their marriage lasted 18 years and produced two biological children.

Errol went on to welcome two children with Jana, meaning he has children with both mother and daughter.

Errol said both children with his stepdaughter were unplanned and they live with their mother.

Errol first welcomed a secret child with Jana in 2018. The child called Elliot Rush is now five.

Errol Musk

Jana lived with Errol for about 18 months after Elliot Rush was born and it seems it was during this period that she became pregnant again.

The revelation comes just days after it emerged that his son Elon Musk had fathered twins – his eighth and ninth children – with one of his executives while he was expecting another baby with Grimes.

Errol and Jana are no longer living together.

But Errol claimed, “if I’m still around she might wind up back with me.”

He said he would like to have Jana’s kids living with him but the last time they visited “the kids were starting to get on my nerves.”

The 76-year-old refused to rule out having even more children, however, saying: “The only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce.”

Errol admits he is aware that Jana is two generations younger than he is, with her mother Heidi being one generation younger that he. Errol is 20 years older than Heidi and 41 years older than Jana.

Errol said: “I married her mother when she was 25 and I was 45. She was probably one of the best looking woman I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Errol did admit that the relationship with Jana shocked his four daughters, who saw Jana as a sibling and found it “creepy”.

A source told MailOnline when Elliot was born: “Errol has known Jana all her life. It has split the family. Errol got married to her mother when Jana was four years old.”

The shocking story reportedly angered Elon, 51, who went “berserk” when he found out his father had had a child with his step-sister.

Although Errol denies having a bad relationship with his billionaire son, Elon has previously described his engineer father as “evil” and a “terrible human being.”

Despite Elon’s anger at his father impregnating his stepsister, he too has welcomed multiple children with different mothers.

Recent court documents revealed that the tech billionaire quietly had twins with one of his top executives in November, weeks before he welcomed a child with music star Grimes via surrogate.

While Elon is reportedly angry at his father Errol, Elon’s child also does not want anything to do with the billionaire Tesla founder.

Elon’s child, who was born a boy and named Xavier Alexander Musk, recently filed to change his gender to female.

He also filed to change his name to Vivian Jenna Wilson, taking on his mother’s maiden name “Wilson” because he wants nothing to do with his father.

A judge approved the gender and name change.

Social media users have gone on various platforms to share their opinions about the Musk’s family dynamics after it was revealed that Errol welcomed children with his stepdaughter.

2023 Elections: PDP goes to court, wants Peter Obi, Tinubu disqualified

The Peoples Democratic Party has instituted a lawsuit compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission to prevent All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu; and Labour Party standard bearer, Peter Obi, from replacing their running mates with Senator Kashim Shettima and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed respectively.

The PDP is also asking the court to declare that Tinubu and Obi be disqualified unless they contest alongside their previous running mates: Kabiru Masari and Doyin Okupe respectively.

In the originating summons with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1016/2022, the PDP is seeking an order barring the Independent National Electoral Commission from replacing the running mates of Tinubu and Obi.

Those listed as first to seventh respondents in the case are INEC, APC, Tinubu, Masari, Labour Party, Obi and Okupe.

Recall that Tinubu had nominated Masari as a surrogate running mate or placeholder in order to beat the June 17 INEC deadline.

Obi had also nominated his campaign manager, Okupe, as an interim running mate.

However, INEC gave a grace period of about one month to substitute their names.

After weeks of consultations, Tinubu and Obi nominated Shettima and Baba-Ahmed respectively while Masari and Okupe resigned.

However, the PDP asked the court to determine if by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s timetable, Tinubu and Obi are bound by the submission of Masari and Okupe respectively as their running mates.

The party also asked the court to determine if “by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the first defendant (INEC) can validly accept any change or substitution of the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Okupe) defendants as running mates of the 3rd (APC) and 6th (Labour Party) defendants.”

The PDP is also seeking five reliefs including a declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s timetable, both Tinubu and Obi must be bound by their submission.

The party asked the court to rule that both Tinubu and Obi will be disqualified the moment they substitute the names of their running mates.

One of the reliefs reads: “A declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the 1st defendant’s (INEC’s) election timetable, the 3rd (Tinubu) and 6th (Obi) cannot validly contest the 2023 Presidential election without the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Obi) respondents as their respective running mates.”

The PDP also based its argument on the fact that the term ‘placeholder’ is unknown to Nigerian law.

“The Electoral Act makes no provisions whatsoever for placeholder or temporary running mates. The acts of the 2nd (APC), 3rd (Tinubu), 5th (Labour Party ) and 6th (Obi) defendants in nominating and forwarding the names of the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Okupe) defendants as running mates for the 2023 Presidential elections is valid and subsisting,” the party added.

In a supporting affidavit sworn to by Evelyn Oroh, a litigation secretary in the law firm of Gordy Uche (SAN), it was stated that some of the defendants had stated openly that they were mere placeholders.

“I know that the 3rd (Tinubu) and 6th (Obi) defendants have stated in media interviews and publications that the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Okupe) defendants are not their real running mates but merely holding the place as placeholders for the real running mates,” it stated.

When contacted on the telephone, the Labour Party’s lawyer, Alex Ejesieme, said he had received the court processes.

“I have received the processes and we are filing a response already,” he simply stated.

The Head, Legal Directorate, Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), said he was aware of the suit when contacted by one of our correspondents on Thursday.

Ogala, a former Legal Adviser of the APC, however, said Tinubu’s legal team had not been served a notice by the court.

“Yes, I’m aware (of the matter). But they have not served us.” When asked to confirm the service, he restated, “They have not.”

Earlier, INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, had in an interview with Arise TV, described the issue of placeholder as a unique invention that had no place in the constitutional and legal framework of the country.

He had said: “Political parties’ candidates have submitted names of associates to run with them, and that is the position of the law as of today and nothing has changed.

“For there to be a substitution of a candidate, the vice-presidential candidate must write to the INEC, with an affidavit stating that he is withdrawing from the race within the time frame provided by the law, as that is the only way there can be a substitution of candidates.”

Also, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Prof. Abdulganniy Raji, had said: “Being a part of the umpire, I will not say I see danger or I didn’t see danger (in party submitting place holders instead of running mate).

“I will rather abide by the constitutional provisions, the extant laws.

“The Electoral Act makes provisions for the procedure of how to nominate and there are also provisions for the substitution of the names, either in case of death or withdrawal by any candidate, whether the substantive candidate or the running mate.”

Senior lawyers, in separate interviews with The PUNCH on June 20 had said the only risk involved in the place holding arrangement would be the refusal of the running mate to step down.

A senior advocate, Adegoke Rasheed, said a placeholder could only be withdrawn if he died or voluntarily withdrew as neither INEC nor the court could make him relinquish the position.

Another SAN, Rotimi Jacobs, said political parties had taken advantage of the silence of the Electoral Act on the issue.

He said: “The political parties are just taking advantage of the provision of the Electoral Act: Section 33 permits the candidates to withdraw or an account of death or may be substituted.

“The political party will conduct another primary election.

“Or if he voluntarily withdraws, the political party that is affected must within 14 days conduct fresh primary elections to produce another candidate.”

Nigeria currently pushed to its brink — IMF

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has said that inflation, debt, and forex crisis is pushing Nigerian and other African economies to the brink.

Georgieva disclosed this in a report titled, “Facing a Darkening Economic Outlook: How the G20 Can Respond“, on the IMF’s website.

The IMF Managing Director said that ministers of finance and central bank governors on the continent disclosed this to her this week.

She added that most countries on the continent could raise money from the global financial markets and do not have large domestic markets to turn to.

She stated: “The particularly difficult conditions in many African countries at this moment is important to consider. In my meeting with Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors from the continent this week, many highlighted how the effects of this, entirely exogenous, shock was pushing their economies to the brink.

“The effect of higher food prices is being felt acutely as food accounts for a higher share of income. Inflation, fiscal, debt and balance of payments pressures are all intensifying. Most are now completely shut out from global financial markets; and unlike other regions don’t have large domestic markets to turn to.

“Against this backdrop, they are calling on the international community to come up with bold measures to support their people. This is a call we need to heed.”

The report, which was released on Wednesday, is a backdrop to the meeting that G20 ministers and central bank governors will have in Bali later this week.

According to the MD of the Washington-based lender, the human and economic impact of the war in Ukraine has worsened with commodity price shocks and an increase in cost of living leading to a crisis for hundreds of millions of people.

She said inflation is now higher than expected and has broadened beyond food and energy prices which has prompted major central banks to announce further monetary tightening.

She disclosed the fund would downgrade its global growth projection for both 2022 and 2023 in its World Economic Outlook update later this month.

She explained that it is going to be a tough 2022, and the possibility of a tougher 2023 is quickly materialising.

Georgieva stated, “It is going to be a tough 2022—and possibly an even tougher 2023, with increased risk of recession.

“That is why we need decisive action and strong international cooperation, led by the G20. Our new report to the G20 outlines policies that countries can use to navigate this sea of troubles.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was ‘offered £250M deal for a Saudi Arabian club’

Superstar footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been offered a £250million megadeal to finish his career in Saudi Arabia amid uncertainty over Manchester United future.

An unnamed Middle East club is said to have apparently offered the 37-year-old an eye-watering amount of cash to join them.

CNN Portugal say the club would not only pay United a transfer fee of around £25m to sign Ronaldo but they would offer him a salary in the region of £105m-per-season over two years.

The lucrative package also includes £20m for Ronaldo’s representative Jorge Mendes.

United paid Juventus an initial £12.85m to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford last summer, with the player signing a two-year contract with the option of a third.

Ronaldo is not currently with the rest of the United squad on their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia on compassionate grounds.

Ten Hag refused to discuss Ronaldo’s future when asked in a press conference as United arrived in Melbourne for two fixtures.

‘We made a statement and nothing has changed,’ said Ten Hag ahead of Friday’s friendly match against A-League outfit Melbourne Victory at the MCG.

Speaking before United’s 4-0 win over Liverpool in Bangkok earlier this week, Ten Hag slammed the door shut on Ronaldo’s attempts to leave Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said in Bangkok: ‘We are planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season and that’s it. I’m looking forward to working with him. Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans and we want success together.’

The Dutch coach added: ‘He’s not with us and it’s due to personal issues.

‘I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation with him and I had a good talk. That is between Cristiano and me.

‘What I can confirm is we had a really good conversation together. I didn’t speak to him after (the news).’

Cristiano Ronaldo rejected by Chelsea club as they don’t need him

Chelsea have ended their interest in Cristiano Ronaldo after talks between manager Thomas Tuchel and co-owner Todd Boehly.

Back in May, the American billionaire raised the prospect of bringing Manchester United’s wantaway star to Stamford Bridge following a meeting with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, in Portugal.

Following the discussions, the decision was made not to pursue the 37-year-old because Tuchel believes the arrival of Ronaldo may have potentially steal some of the limelight from Sterling, whom Chelsea view as a marquee signing and dressing room leader.

The Portuguese is yet to join United on their pre-season tour after informing the club that he wants to leave after they missed out on Champions League football following a disastrous campaign.

Reports have claimed that a club in Saudi Arabia is offering to sign Ronaldo and  pay him £105m a year.

A brazillian doctor who orally raped pregnant woman while she was having c-section’s Video released (video)

The video of a Brazilian anesthetist putting his penis in a pregnant woman’s mouth during her C-section has been released.

Dr Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, was arrested on suspicion of rape after he was secretly filmed orally raping a woman after he heavily sedated her at the Hospital da Mulher in São João de Meriti, Rio de Janeiro.

Hospital nurses, who noticed his patients are usually too weak to hold their babies after surgery, set up a hidden camera to find out why and the camera caught him in the act.

Staff members who recorded the rape said the doctor had already carried out two similar procedures that day, with police investigating whether those two women were also victims of attack.

The custody hearing of the doctor was held on Tuesday, July 12.

He is facing charges of rape with a prison sentence ranging from 8 to 15 years in Brazil.

‘In my country it is normal to have sex with young boys’ – Afghan sex offender in France says

An Afghan migrant who raped and sexually assaulted multiple young boys and girls in France has defended his vile abuse as ‘normal’ practice in his home country.

According to Mail Online, Mohammed Rahman Arsala, 32, moved to Saint-Brieuc in northern France in 2018 where he committed a string of offences. He was jailed last year for 15 years for raping a 12-year-old boy and was hauled back before the courts last week to answer for further offences against children.

The court heard in July 2021 how Arsala followed the underage boy off a bus, grabbed his arm and took him to an abandoned warehouse to carry out the attack in August 2018.

After returning the boy to the park, a group of underage girls who had previously been bothered by Arsala saw the distressed look on the boy’s face and alerted police and he was arrested later that day.

The defence lawyer asked the judge to consider the ‘cultural element’ of the case, saying it was common practice for men to abuse underage boys in Afghanistan.

The defendant said: ‘In my country, it is normal to have sexual relations with young boys because women are inaccessible. When I arrived in France I did not know your laws, but since I learned that it was prohibited’.

The practice of Bacha Bazi is illegal in Afghanistan but perpetrators are rarely punished, with many powerful officials taking part.

Prosecutors said of the defendant: ‘He tells us that if he had been married, that would never have happened because he would have had a wife to satisfy his needs… But does he, therefore, see others only as objects?’

Last week, Arsala appeared in court in Brest to answer for other sex crimes committed in France.

Before the rape of the 12-year-old boy, the sex criminal assaulted and harassed two underage girls.

In April 2018, he approached one girl claiming to need help in his broken English and lured her to his room where he locked the door.

The young victim said, according to Actu: ‘He slammed me against the wall holding me down with his knee, he was way too strong, I was trying to resist, but I couldn’t get away, he was trying to kiss me and tear my clothes off, I was terrified, he ended up telling me that if I wanted to leave I had to touch his penis.

‘When I told him I would call the police, he immediately opened the door.’

Just days later, she was hospitalised after a suicide attempt, which happened another five times.

Arsala said in court: ‘I wanted to touch her a little, but she wouldn’t. If she was a decent girl, she wouldn’t have come up to my room.’

The following month, another underage girl filed a complaint with police, saying he had pleaded with her to have sex with him.

She said: ‘He was insistent and pursued me, I was very scared, I warned my parents who called the police.’

Arsala was jailed for a further three years for the two attacks against the young girls, extending his prison sentence to 18 years. After serving his term, he will be deported from France.

The sex pest has also been accused of taking photos of young children at school while others reported him masturbating on a beach. In prison, he acted inappropriately towards a female nurse and was moved to another facility where he was accused of sexually assaulting an inmate.

Pope Francis names three women to become priests

Pope Francis has named two nuns and a laywoman to the Vatican department that helps choose new bishops, the first time women have been allowed to serve on the body.

The Holy See Press Office published the Pope’s latest appointments to the Dicastery in a statement on Wednesday, July 13.

The female members are Sister Raffaella Petrini, F.S.E., Secretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State; Sister Yvonne Reungoat, F.M.A, former Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians; and, Dr. Maria Lia Zervino, President of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations.

The three women were among 14 people appointed to the Dicastery for Bishops, which vets candidates and advises the pope on which priests should become bishops. The other 11 appointed on Wednesday were cardinals, bishops and priests.

The appointment of the three women to the Dicastery for Bishops, nuns Raffaella Petrini and Yvonne Reungoat and lay woman María Lia Zervino comes as Francis seeks to usher in more gender equality within the Church’s positions of government and responsibility.

The 85-year-old pope has repeatedly said that women should play greater roles within the Vatican’s hierarchy and has broken centuries of precedent to place women in some key spots previously held by men.

Last year, the Argentine pontiff issued a decree to allow women to serve as readers at liturgies, altar servers and distributors of communion  but stopped short of saying the change could one day open the door to female priests.

Criminals, Terrorists, Bandits Now Have Better Intelligence System Than Nigeria’s Police – Retired AIG

A security expert and retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ambrose Aisabor has lamented the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.

According to Aisabor, the terrorists, bandits and other criminals attacking citizens of the country appear more prepared, coordinated and with superior intelligence information compared to the government and the security agencies.

He said this is why the terrorists can launch daring attacks, escape with victims and then make ransom demands from the families of the government.

According to the former AIG, the money the insurgents are making from ransom payments is being used to procure more sophisticated weapons while the government is getting more helpless in handling the situation.

Specifically, he expressed concerns about the Kuje prison attack, the Abuja-Kaduna train attack and the inability of the government to so far free the victims.

As a way out, Aisabor submitted that it is time for the government to seek foreign help.

He as quoted by Daily Trust: “This will tell you that the situation the Federal Government is in now is that of helplessness. They don’t have the wherewithal to fight these terrorists. The intelligence system of the terrorists is better than that of the Federal Government. You can see this from the way they are attacking.

“You can imagine N800m for seven people and one man last time paid N100m.

“The situation has gone beyond them and that is why I suggested that they should now seek foreign assistance immediately.

Angola overtakes Nigeria to become Africa’s biggest oil producer

Angola has retained its position as the biggest oil producer in Africa for the second straight month.

New data released by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Tuesday, July 12 shows Angola produced more crude oil than Nigeria in the month  of June despite Nigeria recording its biggest production jump in months by 134,000 barrels per barrel (bpd) to 1.158 million bpd in June from 1.024 million in May.

Angola’s oil production rose to 1.175 million bpd in June, up from 1.162 million bpd in May making Nigeria lose its status as Africa’s top oil producer to Angola for two months running reducing it’s ranking among its peers in OPEC.

Part of the OPEC report reads: “On a monthly average, crude differentials to the North Sea Dated benchmark of Bonny Light, Forcados and Qua Iboe rose by $2.45, $3.26, and $2.83, respectively m-o-m in June, to settle at a premium of $5.28/b, $7.61/b, and $6.53/b,”

OPEC said Angolan crude differentials also rose on demand from Europe, adding: “The crude differential of medium-heavy sweet crude Cabinda rose in June by $2.83 m-o-m on average to a premium of $3.76/b.”

According to secondary sources, OPEC’s crude oil production averaged 28.72 million bpd in June 2022, higher by 234,000 bpd compared to the previous month.

“Crude oil output increased mainly in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, IR Iran, Kuwait and Angola, while production in Libya and Venezuela declined,” the 13-member oil cartel said.

OPEC said despite the improvement in fossil fuel prices, the short-term economic outlook for Nigeria was clouded by high inflation, and in response to the elevated inflationary pressures, the Central Bank of Nigeria raised its policy rate by 150 basis points to 13 percent, bringing borrowing costs to the highest since April of 2020.

It said: “Overall, the above-average fossil fuel prices support a firmly positive outlook for the rest of the year, but concerns over soaring inflation would increase uncertainty next year.”

Preliminary data indicates that global liquids production in June increased by 1.32 million bpd to average 99.82 million bpd compared with the previous month.

The report said: “The share of OPEC crude oil in total global production decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 28.8 percent in June compared with the previous month.

“Estimates are based on preliminary data from direct communication for non-OPEC supply, OPEC NGLs and non-conventional oil, while estimates for OPEC crude production are based on secondary sources.”

“Total oil demand is projected to average 100.3 million bpd. In 1Q22, demand was revised up amid strong economic growth in most consuming countries and a lower baseline,” it said.

PSG refuses to sign Cristiano Ronaldo after talks with agent Jorge Mendes

PSG have reportedly turned down the chance to sign Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last month, Ronaldo informed new boss Erik ten Hag that he wants to quit Old Trafford this summer because he wants to compete for trophies.

PSG are one of the clubs armed with the power to bring Ronaldo in, but even a side with the financial might of the French giants would struggle to secure such a deal, according to ESPN – who claim the club rejected the opportunity after talks between president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the player’s agent Jorge Mendes.

According to Mail Online, Al-Khelaifi and Mendes have a close relationship and met this summer after the latter offered his client to the Ligue 1 champions.

But PSG believe they do not have enough room in their wage budget to accommodate Ronaldo, and also fear they would not even be able to fit him into the current squad because it is already filled with names like Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

They also believe Ronaldo would not be the right signing at this time, the report goes on, with PSG entering a new era following a hierarchical shuffle after agreeing new terms with Mbappe.

Galtier wants to play with a back three at PSG, the report claims, which will already make it difficult for him to find space for Mbappe, Neymar and Mbappe in his front three, meaning signing Ronaldo would not work.

Cristiano Ronaldo reflects

Speaking before Manchester United’s 4 – 0 victory over Liverpool in Asia, Ten Hag stressed he was not for sale and that the player was in his plans.

‘We are planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season and that’s it. I’m looking forward to working with him. Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans and we want success together.’

‘I cannot tell (on Ronaldo joining tour) as absence I already explained and that is it for this moment,’ added the United boss. ‘He’s not with us and it’s due to personal issues.

‘I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation with him and I had a good talk. That is between Cristiano and me. What I can confirm is we had a really good conversation together. I didn’t speak to him after (the news).’

Aisha Yesufu proposes raising ₦100B to fund Peter Obi’s campaign

Social media influencer and one of the founding members of #BringBackOurGirls, Mrs. Aisha Yesufu, has proposed raising one nundred billion to fund the campaign project of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Mrs. Yesufu made the proposal in a series of tweets on her social media handle on Tuesday.

In the first tweet posted below, she made the call with hashtags #PeterObiCampaignFund and #100BillionForPOCampaign.

In the second tweet below, she urged her audience to start saving as little as one hundred Naira per week.

This, according to her, if 1,000,000 people put one hundred naira weekly, will amount to one hundred million Naira per week and four hundred million Naira monthly.

The third tweet, a video of herself, saw her defending her trust and confidence in the Peter Obi project. Watch below:

An analyst, Mr. Vin Modebelu, took the task a notch further by urging Nigerians in diaspora to step up to the #100BillionForPOCampaign challenge.

Mr. Modebelu broke it down as follows:

“Presidential campaign is expensive! It needs billions! Can we raise 100 billion?

“Can Peter Obi Peter Obi set up an account, Gofundme, mobile payment for donations to start? There must be stringent measures to ensure accountability and transparency,” he noted.

Explaining further, he said: “The biggest factor the average politician has is either money or access to money.

“I believe with Peter Obi the people have to contribute that money. There is no State money that Peter Obi will be dependent on or even state machinery.

“There is no time. Plans should be in high gear now. Other candidates have luxury of time. Peter Obi doesn’t and so things should be in high motion.

“People are ready to donate. Peter Obi should have his financial team set up the necessarily accounts, Gofundme, mobile payment system and launch the campaign fundraising.

“Not one that different groups or people will be setting up.

“This election is now glaringly one of survival for many Nigerians and we must put our monies where our votes are.

“We will have to be the ones donating to our candidates. The people must be the power brokers!

“A 100 billion is doable. Our little money when added together by many of us will lead to that sum. Let us not he afraid.

“Let me start with Nigerians in Diaspora. If 1,000,000 Nigerians in Diaspora donate $100 that will be $100,000,000 = 60 billion,

“For some, $100 might be too much to give. We have students in diaspora. They can donate $10.

“1,000,000 Nigerian students/ youth in diaspora donating $10 will be $10,000,000 = 6 billion naira. Some can afford to donate $10 weekly.

“It is reported that there are 15 million Nigerians in Diaspora.

“Can we have another 1,000,000 Nigerians in Diaspora that can contribute $1 weekly to #PeterObiCampaign Fund weekly until election?

“You read right. That is $1 weekly. That will be $1 million weekly.”

On the need to ensure accountability and transparency, Modebelu continued:

“Let me repeat: the #PeterObiCampaignFund must be set up by Peter Obi himself. He can assign his team and launch. He will be held accountable.

“The team in charge must be trustworthy with weekly final report to public. At least 3 signatories for withdrawal.

“There must also be a team that vet and approve all project to ensure judicious use of money. This team must consist of incorruptible people with character and are street/market smart.

“Not the ones that will be told billboard is one billion and they approve.”

He, however, posited that the burden should not be left for only Nigerians in diaspora, reiterating Aisha Yesufu proposal for “one hundred Naira per week”.

He said: “While Nigerians in Diaspora are donating to #PeterObiCampaignFund, Nigerians in Nigeria will not be left out also.

“Let’s start with the market woman that believes in Peter Obi and can donate 100 naira weekly! 1,000,000 of them will be 100,000,000 weekly!

“There are Nigerians that can donate N1,000 weekly to #PeterObiCampaignFund. Some will just make it N5,000 a month till election.

“1,000,000 donating N1,000 weekly will be one billion Naira weekly. That will be four billion Naira monthly.”

He explained that donating to #PeterObiCampaignFund is not just about money but investment of passion!

“1 million people is about 27 thousand people from each of the 36 states. Some States will have more than others.
Lagos State fit vex give one million people sef,” he joked.

“Fundraising dinner can be organised in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. That’s where you have the big boys and the big girls.

“Some can donate 100m without batting eyes. Our N1,000 is still solid! We are all investing. Putting our monies where our votes are.

“Imagine the friendly competition we will have representing our different places of residence in donating. We can even be putting our residence states to show from where. FCT for those of us in Abuja.”

He, meanwhile, reiterated the need for serious accountability as Nigerians have been disappointed for too long.

“There should be weekly statement of accounts released! It is important to not only be above board but to also be seen to be above board,” he stressed.

Beyond money, he also called for time, asking people to donate their time.

“A central database should be kept ( which I believe is already being done with the 15 people each at polling unit). I volunteer for my polling unit!

“Beyond the database of support groups there should be a central one.

“The number of hours people can donate and on what days and in which places should be noted and judiciously used,” he concluded.

Do you know that Labour Party has better structure than APC and PDP? – Pat Utomi

Political economist, Professor Pat Utomi has said that the Labour Party has a better structure than the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Utomi expressed hope of Labour Party which he is a member of, winning the 2023 presidential election.

The Labour Party member who pointed out that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have political commissions in every state of the federation, stated that the party will mobilise people during the forthcoming polls to ensure that every polling booth is covered.

Decrying situation whereby those in public office would steal money to rig elections, a situation he said people have mistaken to be political structures, Utomi explained that the scenario whereby politicians bribe their way during elections is changing as the people want a different narrative.

He said;

“Labour Party has a super structure, much better than the structures APC and the PDP have.

“The Labour Party is built around the labour movement and a college of civil society organisations.

“With the structure that we have, I am guaranteeing that on the election day, in every polling station in this country, there are at least 15 people who are standing up for the third force to support the Labour party candidate.”

On the possibility of a merger with other parties, the Labour party chieftain stated that talks are ongoing with several political parties, although he did not disclose any specific one.

When asked why he’s confident of Labour party’s victory, he berated the performance of both APC and PDP that have ruled Nigeria.

‘What to do in case of nuclear attack on the New York City?’

The New York state government has released an eerie video sharing what to do in the case of a nuclear attack

The warning comes after Russian state media boasted Russia could wipe out the East and West coast with four missiles.

Reporter Tony Dokoupil claimed a similar-sized bomb to the one dropped on Hiroshima would destroy much of Manhattan and create a mushroom cloud bigger than the Empire State building.

The likelihood of a nuclear bomb dropping is ‘very low’, but it is important people living in the city know what to do, the city’s Emergency Management Department said today.

The public service announcement advises locals to follow three steps – Get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned.

New York releases scary video showing what to do in case of nuclear attack on the city after Russian media claimed four bombs will destroy the city

In the footage, a city spokeswoman on a New York street says: ‘So there’s been a nuclear attack. Don’t ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit. OK. So what do we do?’

‘There are three important steps I want you to remember. Step one, get inside, fast. You, your friends, your family, get inside.

‘And no, staying in the car is not an option. You need to get into a building and move away from the windows.’

The woman goes on to tell people to stay inside, shut all doors and windows and head to a basement if they have one, or sit in the middle of their building otherwise.

The government advised people who were outside during the nuclear attack to clean up immediately and remove radioactive dust.

The video doesn’t specify how the nuclear attack happened or if there is an Intel of an impending attack.

On Tuesday, July 12, Twitter filed the suit in Delaware chancery court to seek a ruling that would order Musk to complete the merger at the agreed price of $54.20 per Twitter share, according to a court filing.

Musk refuses to honor his obligations to Twitter and its shareholders because the deal he signed no longer serves his personal interests,’ the lawsuit states.

Last Friday, Musk said he was terminating the deal because Twitter violated the agreement by failing to respond to requests for information regarding fake or spam accounts on the platform, which is fundamental to its business performance.

The billionaire appeared to respond to the suit in a tweet on Tuesday evening, writing: ‘Oh the irony lol.’

Twitter’s lawsuit argues: ‘Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, Musk apparently believes that he – unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law – is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value, and walk away.’

Twitter’s General Counsel Sean Edgett informed staff of the lawsuit in a company-wide memo on Tuesday afternoon.

‘We have also filed a motion for an expedited trial alongside the complaint, asking for the case to be heard in September, as it is critically important for this matter to be resolved quickly,’ Edgett wrote in the memo, according to the New York Times.

At this point we anticipate the next step in the process will be for the court to set a schedule for the case,’ he added.

The lawsuit was a widely anticipated step after Musk last week announced his intent to pull out of the April 25 merger agreement, which specified penalties for backing out of the deal.

Those penalties included a $1 billion breakup fee, as well as the ability for the parties to enforce the contract in court, which Twitter officials had previously vowed to do.

Musk argues that Twitter has broken its contractual obligations by failing to disclose key information about fake accounts on the platform.

Twitter’s lawsuit will be heard in Delaware chancery court, as both Twitter and the company Musk is using to complete the merger are officially incorporated in Delaware.

The lawsuit accused Musk of ‘a long list’ of violations of the merger agreement that ‘have cast a pall over Twitter and its business.’

Shares of the social media platform closed at $34.06 on Tuesday, sharply below the levels above $50 where it traded when the deal was accepted by Twitter’s board in late April.

Musk said he was terminating the merger because of the lack of information about spam accounts and inaccurate representations that he said amounted to a ‘material adverse event.’He also said executive departures amounted to a failure to conduct business in the ordinary course, as Twitter was obligated to do.

Twitter said it negotiated to remove from the merger agreement language that would have made such firings a violation of ordinary course requirement.

Twitter called the reasons cited by Musk a ‘pretext’ that lacked merit and said his decision to walk away had more to do with a decline in the stock market, particularly for tech stocks.

Musk has continued to launch many attacks at Twitter by tweeting a series of memes mocking the company for attempting to enforce the agreement.

Russian woman sells her baby to perform plastic surgery

A mum (pictured above) has been accused of selling her newborn baby to pay for a £3,000 nose job.

The disgraced 33-year-old mum has been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, southern Russia.

According to police reports, the mum took a small deposit of £274 from a couple who agreed just five days after her son’s birth on April 25, to take the infant off her hands.

Soon after purchasing the boy, he fell unwell and the couple were asked for his birth certificate by medics when taking him to hospital.

sold baby to perform surgery

Getting the birth certificate cost them the equivalent of £1,370 a month later with the mum negotiating a price based on the cost of a nose job, the couple claimed following their arrest.

But before the couple could hand over the remainder of the total £2,730 fee, police arrested the group for human trafficking.

In a statement obtained by Newsflash, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Dagestan said: “The investigating authorities of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Dagestan have initiated a criminal case against a 33-year-old resident of the city of Kaspiysk.

“She is suspected of committing a crime under paragraph ‘h’ of Part 2 of Art. 127.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (purchase and sale committed in relation to a person who is in a state of helplessness, known to the guilty person).”

The statement continued: “According to investigators, on 25th April, 2022, a woman gave birth to a male child in Caspian City Central Hospital.

“On 30th April, 2022, the woman who had given birth was discharged from the hospital, where, having met with a local resident, she agreed to hand over her newborn son, who was in a state of helplessness, to him for a reward of 200,000 rubles.

“She then issued a waiver for the rights to the child, and the suspect received money amounting to 20,000 rubles for the child from the third party.

“On 26th May, 2022, she received the rest of the money amounting to 100,000 rubles.

“Subsequently, information about the crime committed became known to law enforcement officers.

“The suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 91 and 92 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation.

“Currently, a series of investigative actions is being carried out, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed and consolidating evidence of the suspect’s guilt.

“The issue of choosing a preventive measure against her is being decided,” the statement concluded.

“I was trafficked and forced to work as domestic servant” – Gold medalist, Mo Farah says

Olympic star, Sir Mo Farah was brought to the UK illegally as a child and forced to work as a domestic servant, he has revealed.

According to the marathon star, his real name is Hussein Abdi Kahin and he was given the name Mohamed Farah by those who flew him over from Djibouti.

He was flown over from the African country aged nine by a woman he had never met, and then made to cater for another family’s children, he says.

“For years I just kept blocking it out,” the Team GB athlete says.

“But you can only block it out for so long.”

Previously he said he came to the UK from Somalia with his parents as a refugee.

But in a documentary by the BBC and Red Bull Studios airing on Wednesday, July 13, he said his parents have never been to the UK while his mother and two brothers live on their family farm in the breakaway state of Somaliland.

He said his father, Abdi, was killed by stray gunfire when Mo was four years old, in civil violence in Somalia.

Mo Farah

He says he was about eight or nine years old when he was taken from home to stay with  family in Djibouti. He was then flown over to the UK by a woman he had never met and wasn’t related to.

She told him he was being taken to Europe to live with relatives there – something he says he was “excited” about. “I’d never been on a plane before,” he says.

Mo Farah

He says she had fake travel documents with her that showed his photo next to the name “Mohamed Farah”.

When they arrived in the UK, the woman took him to her flat in Hounslow, west London, and took a piece of paper off him that had his relatives’ contact details on, according to the documentary.

“Right in front of me, she ripped it up and put it in the bin. At that moment, I knew I was in trouble,” he says.

“if I wanted food in my mouth”. He says the woman told him: “If you ever want to see your family again, don’t say anything.”

“Often I would just lock myself in the bathroom and cry,” he says.

For the first few years the family didn’t allow him to go to school, but when he was about 12 he enrolled in Year 7 at Feltham Community College.

School staff were told Sir Mo was a refugee from Somalia.

His former teacher Sarah Rennie says he came to school “unkempt and uncared for”, that he spoke very little English and was an “emotionally and culturally alienated” child.

She says the people who said they were his parents didn’t attend any parents’ evenings.

Sir Mo says sport was a lifeline for him as “the only thing I could do to get away from this [living situation] was to get out and run”.

He told his PE teacher Mr Watkinson about his true identity, his background, and the family he was being forced to work for, who contacted social services and helped Sir Mo to be fostered by another Somali family.

“I still missed my real family, but from that moment everything got better,” Sir Mo says.

“I felt like a lot of stuff was lifted off my shoulders, and I felt like me. That’s when Mo came out – the real Mo.”

Mo made a name himself as an athlete, at the young age of 14 he was invited to compete for English schools at a race in Latvia – but he didn’t have any travel documents.

His PE teacher Watkinson helped him apply for British citizenship under the name Mohamed Farah, which was granted in July 2000.

In the documentary, barrister Alan Briddock tells Sir Mo his nationality was technically “obtained by fraud or misrepresentations”.

“I had no idea there was so many people who are going through exactly the same thing that I did. It just shows how lucky I was,” he says.

“What really saved me, what made me different, was that I could run.”

“Enough is Enough o !” – President Buhari tells ASUU

President Buhari on Monday, July 11, called on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their five-months-old strike saying ”enough is enough”.

The president called on ASUU made the call while receiving APC governors who paid him a visit in his home in Daura, Katsina state. According to the President, the leadership of ASUU should reconsider their position on the continued strike, expressing worry that the strike will have generational consequences on families, the educational system and future development of the country.

The President said the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for
attention.

He noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education, while assuring that the government understands their position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.

“We hope that ASUU will sympathise with the people on the prolonged strike. Truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home. Don’t hurt the next generation for goodness sake,” he said.

The president called on all well meaning Nigerians, particularly those close to the leaders and members of the association, to intervene in persuading the lecturers to reconsider their position, and the ripple effect on an entire generation and the nation.

President Buhari said students from Nigerian universities will be faced with the challenge of competing with others in a highly connected and technology-driven work space, and keeping them at home only deprives them of time, skill and opportunities to be relevant on the global stage.

“Colonial type education was geared towards producing workers in government. Those jobs are no longer there. Our young people should get education to prepare them for self-employment. Now education is for the sake of education.

Through technology we are much more efficient. We should encourage our children to get education, not only to look for government jobs,” he said

President Buhari said resources should be channeled more into building infrastructure and operations of the health and educational sector, not to expand the bureaucracy to create job opportunities.

“By this time next year, I would have made the most out of the two terms, and the remaining months I will do my best,” the President noted.

Russia Govt. shut down gas supply to Germany

Countries in Europe are likely to experience an increase in their energy bills after Russia opted to cut gas supply to Germany amid a disagreement with Canada over the repair of its turbine.

Russia had sent its turbine to Germany for repair while the latter sent it to Canada for the same purpose.

But the Canadian government seized the equipment as a sanction against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The turbine is meant for Russia’s Nord Stream 1 pipeline which serves Germany via the Baltic Sea.

Following the seizure of the turbine by Canada, President Vladmir Putin ordered the reduction of gas delivery to Germany.

At least 55 billion cubic meters of gas is transported from Russia to Germany per year, and shortage of the gas is expected to hit the German economy hard, increasing cost of living for households in the country, and other European countries that depend on Russia’s gas.

Following discussions between Germany and Canada, the latter decided to send the turbine back to Germany for the continued repair of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline which will take one week.

The repair work starts on Monday, and with the supply dropping, Russia denied the reduction was a political response to the seizure of the turbine by Canada.

Russia accounts for 40 percent of gas imported by Europe, giving the country an influence over others in Europe ahead of the winter when the rest of the continent will need gas to keep warm.

Germany’s head of energy regulator, Klaus Mueller, said the shutdown of gas supply might extend beyond one week due to political reasons, creating more headaches for the European market that is struggling with the high cost of crude oil.

“We cannot rule out the possibility that gas transport will not be resumed afterward for political reasons,” Mueller said.

SDP and Labour Party enter into alliance in Benue State

As the 2023 is gathering momentum, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has entered into an alliance with the Labour Party (LP) in Benue State with an intent to support the latter in the coming general election.

Engr John Enemari, state Chairman of the SDP announced at a press conference on Monday that his entire executive has thrown their weight behind the Labour Party in Benue State ahead of the 2023 polls.

Enemari also directed chairmen of his party including executives at the 276 electoral wards of the 23 local government areas in the state to support the LP for good governance in order to revamp the socio-economic fortunes of the citizenry.

“The man, Herman Hembe, that is coming is a young man that has done very well in his constituency. This is his fourth time in the National Assembly. My people are calling me, chairman, where do you want us to go, I said look, wait, I met with him and we spoke, so my people we are going to work with him,” he said.

The SDP chairman added that the crisis at the national level of the party has destabilised everything in all the states of the federation, adding that the crisis created factions and they cannot continue to suffer for them at the national office particularly Benue SDP as they did in 2018/2019.

“In a party if you don’t win an election, what do you do? Now they are in court, let them continue, Benue is not a revenue-yielding state for them. Benue now needs good governance we cannot remain idle, we must work with those with integrity to deliver the state.

“I consulted with all other parties the APC, and PDP but that didn’t work, as one was trailed with legal issues and the other with integrity issues. Since we did not have a governorship candidate we have decided to give our full support and ensure LP wins in Benue state and salvage the state from the infrastructural deficit and failed promises,” he said.

On his part, Dr Jude Nyor, a Senior Legislative Aide to the LP governorship candidate in Benue, Herman Hembe, applauded the development, noting that SDP is a good party that understands where the country is moving to.

Nyor expressed joy as he called on others to join LP because it is the party to beat in 2023 and they would take Benue out of the woods by rebuilding and making it great again.

‘Why Has The Govt. Refused To Try Hundreds Of Sponsors Of Terrorism And Terror Suspects?’ – Femi Falana SAN Opines

Femi Falana speaks

During a visit to the Kuje Correctional Centre last week, the Minister of Defence, General Bashir Magashi (retd) told journalists that all the 64 Boko Haram members were among the over 600 inmates that were freed by the terrorists who attacked the facility in a commando fashion. Before jetting out of the country after the attack, President Buhari visited the prison and asked certain rhetorical questions.  The questions would have been totally unnecessary if the Federal Government had complied with section 28 (1), (2) & (3) of Nigerian Correctional Service Act provides as follows:

“(1) There shall be provided monitoring devices to protect, control and safeguard correctional activities, including observatory towers, double
perimeter walls, close circuit television, body scanners, e-monitoring devices, electrically activated alarm systems and other instruments of restraint.

 (2) The Correctional Service shall establish and maintain a fully equipped armed squads, intelligence and investigation unit to enhance security, surveillance, monitoring, intelligence gathering and protection.

 (3) In deploying the facilities under subsection (1), priority shall be given to the security requirements of maximum security custodial centres.”

Before the attack on the Kuje Correctional Centre, terrorists and other armed criminal gangs had successfully attacked 14 other Correctional Centres and freed thousands of convicts and awaiting trial inmates in many States of the Federation. In order to secure all correctional centres in the country in line with the aforementioned provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act the Federal Executive Council should urgently approve fund for the purchase and installation of the necessary security equipment

However, having regard to the security implications of the escape of the freed terror suspects the Nigerian people have expressed concern. Since only 64  terror suspects are detained in Kuje Correctional Centre,
the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN should disclose to Nigerians where the 400 sponsors of terrorism and the 800 terror suspects who were due to be arraigned in the Federal High Court last year are being detained.

Before then the 10 soldiers led by an Army Captain who ambushed and killed the  three police officers who had arrested an alleged kidnap suspect, Bala Hamisu (a.k.a.Wadume) in Jalingo, Taraba State in August, 2019 were not arraigned in the Federal High Court even though a charge was filed against them by the police.  In fact, the case was discontinued against them by the Attorney-General of the Federation in a purported  exercise of his powers under section 174 of the Constitution. It has been confirmed that Wadume one of the terror suspects who escaped from Kuje Correctional Centre last week.

During his own visit to the facility last Thursday, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola noted that Nigeria was experiencing asymmetric warfare and that the insurgents have been degraded in the North-East. The Minister further said that “We have 61,000 of them in our custody in the North-East; the result of the effectiveness itself in degrading them in the North-East is what we are experiencing.”

It is common knowledge that majority of the detainees have been detained for over 10 years. Since terrorism is said to be a federal offence the Governors of the North-East region have requested for the fiat of the Attorney-General of the Federation to have the suspects tried by the respective State Ministries of Justice. But for some inexplicable reasons, Mr. Malami SAN turned down the request. Hence, the suspects have been abandoned in prolonged detention.

In view of the foregoing, we are compelled to call on the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN to ensure that the indicted sponsors of terrorism and terror suspects are charged before the Federal High Court. We also call on the members of the National Assembly who have  been appropriating fund for the prosecution of terror suspects to monitor the prosecution of the indicted terror suspects.

IPOB Agitation Has Reduced Since Peter Obi’s Emergence – Gumi

Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, on Monday, stated that the 2023 presidential election is on set to take off.

Gumi stated this in a post on his Facebook account while reacting to the choices of presidential candidates under political parties in the country.

The cleric claimed the agitation of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has reduced since the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate.

He further stated that the call for the Yoruba Nation has reduced since Bola Tinubu emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Gumi claimed that the agitations across the country are a political gimmick to get power in the 2023 general elections.

The cleric wrote, “The 2022 presidential Run is on set ready for Go!

“The just-concluded Eid celebrations in MADA village Zamfara that witnessed banditry and migrations of locals a few months earlier this year had peaceful Sallah celebrations because the locals have gone into a peace treaty with the bandits. Peace works more than violence! People are learning from that. This is politics. So after all the conflict is political.

“The IPOB rhetoric and loud voice of Biafra agitations have muffled out with the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labor party presidential candidate. To them, Igbos have a platform. It’s clear now that the entire IPOB outcry was a political gimmick to get power.

“The Oduduwa clamours have abated also since Tinubu has clinched the APC ticket never to resurface again until probably if he didn’t win the race.

“Northern Ultra conservatives too have no mouth to speak of marginalization or suppression of representation, the NNPP kwankwaso has satisfied that segment of the society. No more claims of candidate suppression and manipulation.

“Those cosmopolitan nationalists and full democrats can finally say that the people’s Democratic Party also represented their aspirations. The late National Security Adviser General Andrew Owoeye Azazi once blamed the PDP’s zoning and power rotation arrangements for the increased spate of violence in the country.

“Therefore President Jonathan went ahead to disrupt it. This was good for the democrats. The straw that broke the camel’s back.

“Those that are religiously inclined like the American Republican party, have in this race the APC, LP, and other parties that presented the same religion president/ Vice President Ticket or their religious preference candidate as the president.

“Every Nigerian political persuasion and aspiration is well represented and the choice is left for Nigerians to elect. This is true democracy. So we are optimistic that 2023 will bring the maturity of our chosen system of governance to the optimum.

“This is the elephant in the Room, political pundits and commentators are shying away to say. I have no party; I once opposed OBJ, GEJ, and PMB all as politicians publicly because of what I see as bad policies or governance. Nothing personal.

“Our only problem now is whether I.N.E.C. will conduct free, fair, and Transparent Elections?

“Time will tell. May Allah bring peace, tranquillity, stability, and progress to our Nation. And also give us working frictionless governance. Amin”

2023: If I can’t make it, I’ll recommend Tinubu – Kwankwaso says

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso has said he will support his counterpart from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, if he perceives he cannot win.

Kwankwaso made this known in an interview on Arise TV on Sunday night.

Former Kano governor spoke following Tinubu’s announcement of Sen Kashim Shettima as his running mate.

He claimed he had good rapport with the APC national leader in the past and could not underrate his capabilities and tactics to manage Nigeria’s affairs.

Kwankwaso said: “I am so happy about the combination, my only worry is the platform, I know Bola Tinubu is a strategist; he is a good man, I have had reasons to sit with him several times, from 1990 till date.

“The only thing I don’t know is what he will tell Nigerians he will do differently from what President Muhammadu Buhari is doing. Ordinarily, if I cannot get (the presidency) I can recommend Tinubu”.

Mesut Ozil’s contract at Fenerbahce ‘is terminated’ and is free to leave

Mesut Ozil’s contract at Fenerbahce has reportedly been terminated after he was frozen out of the first-team, leaving him as a free agent this summer.

The former Arsenal midfielder had not featured for the Turkish Super Lig side since March 20 after he was excluded from the squad following a row over his fitness. before his termination.

He was involved in a bust up with interim head coach Ismail Kartal before new manager Jorge Jesus left him out his squad.

NTVSpor previously reported that the superstar was set to miss out on their pre-season sessions before the outlet confirmed his departure  by mutual agreement.

Ozil played 36 matches for Fenerbahce, scoring nine goals and assisting three.

Earlier this summer, Ozil insisted he was keen to still ‘contribute’ to the club despite uncertainty over his future.

Boss Jesus said the German footballer would not play for his side again, after having his countrat terminated.

‘He had his time, his space,’ Jesus said in a press conference. ‘He has a beautiful history in Turkey, no one can take it away from him.

‘He is a well-known player around the world. But I will follow exactly what was the end of the Ozil era. The most important thing here is Fenerbahce and it is from there that I build my ideas and the players who come to work with me.’

US Baggage handler steals passenger plane and goes on a ‘ride’ before committing suicide (video)

Newly-released surveillance video shows the moment a baggage handler at Seattle Airport stole an Alaska Airlines plane before deliberately crashing it on a remote island, killing himself.

Authorities at the Port of Seattle have released airport CCTV footage from cameras both inside the terminal and out on the tarmac that document the 2018 incident unfolding in real time.

man steals airplane

In the footage, 29-year-old Richard Russell, who worked as a baggage handler at the airport, is seen passing through airport security with the words, “the Sky’s no limit” written on the back of his t-shirt.

Five hours later, Russell is seen making it out onto the tarmac in the cargo area of the airport and then using a tow vehicle to push the propeller aircraft back out onto a taxiway.

man steals airplane

Air traffic control started to sense something was not right, and tried to make contact with the plane, but received no response.

Meanwhile, Russell’s co-workers can be seen walking nearby, oblivious to the fact that he is about to get behind the controls of the plane.

Russell can be seen opening the cabin door to the Q400 Turboprop and jumping into the cockpit and taking off.

“Seattle ground Horizon guy. About to take off. It’s gonna be crazy,” he radios the control tower.

Video shot from the ground later shows him performing stunts over Puget Sound.

“Hey, I found myself in a predicament. I’m in the air right now. And just gonna soar around,” he can be heard saying over the radio.

On air traffic control recordings, Russel can be heard speaking with controllers who attempt to persuade him to make a safe landing.

Russell can also be heard joking with air traffic controllers.

At one point, he even asked air traffic controllers: “Hey do you think if I land this successfully Alaska will give me a job as a pilot?”

The air traffic controller replied, “you know, I think they would give you a job doing anything if you could pull this off.”

Russell replied: “Yeah right! Nah, I’m a white guy.”

Air traffic controllers can also be heard begging Russell to land the plane and try to give him directions to a runway where he can land.

“There is the runway just off your right side in about a mile, do you see that?” the traffic controller said.

“Oh those guys will try to rough me up if I try land there…,” Russell replied. “I think I might mess something up there too. I wouldn’t want to do that. Oh they probably have got anti-aircraft.”

“They don’t have any of that stuff, we are just trying to find you a place to land safely,” the traffic controller responded.

Russell told the air traffic controller he wasn’t “quite ready” to bring the plane down.

“But holy smokes I need to stop looking at the fuel ‘cos it’s going down quick,” he added.

“OK, Rich, if you could, could you start a left-hand turn and we’ll take you down to the south-east,” the traffic controller said.

“This is probably jail time for life, huh?” Russell replied. “I would hope it is for a guy like me.”

While still in the air, Russel is heard telling traffic controllers he is “just a broken guy” before telling them he is preparing for “jail time for life”.

Two F-15 fighter jets scrambled from Portland minutes after the plane took off to intercept it.

They were unsuccessful, and one hour and 13 minutes after taking off, Russell then intentionally crashes the plane on an island about 30 miles away, killing himself.

The FBI ruled his death as suicide and say that the incident was not part of any wider criminal activity or terrorism and that Russell acted alone.

Ukraine to get ‘million-strong army’ to recapture territories taken by Russia – Defence minister says

Ukraine says it plans to raise a “million-strong army” equipped with Nato weapons to retake the south of the country from occupying Russians.

Russia’s war against Ukraine is entering it’s 5th month and Russia has taken territories in the South and Eastern part of Ukraine.

Retaking the areas around the Black Sea coast was vital to the country’s economy, Oleksii Reznikov said just hours after an attack on a block of flats on Sunday killed at least 18 people – with more than 20 feared buried under the rubble.

Rescuers are still looking for survivors at the site of the five-storey building in Chasiv Yar, near the city of Kramatorsk, in Donetsk region which has been the focus of a Russian push.

In his interview with The Times newspaper, Reznikov praised the UK for being “key” in the transition from providing Ukraine with Soviet-era weapons to Nato-standard air defence systems and ammunition.

He said weapons deliveries needed to go faster.

“We need more, quickly, to save the lives of our soldiers. Each day we’re waiting for howitzers, we can lose a hundred soldiers,” he said.

“We have approximately 700,000 in the armed forces and when you add the national guard, police, border guard, we are around a million strong,” the defence minister said.

Reznikov said an offensive to recapture some of the territory taken by Russia was “politically very necessary”.

It’s also economically important, not least to try to resume exports of Ukrainian grain via Black Sea ports.

Much of Ukraine’s military effort and resources are already being consumed by fierce fighting in the Donbas with Ukraine losing more than half their troops .

But Ukraine’s confidence has been boosted by the supply of more advanced long-range artillery systems.

Paul Pogba Joins Juventus..

Paul Pogba has rejoined Juventus on a four-year deal after his Manchester United contract expired.

The Serie A club reached an agreement to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer on a four-year contract last week.

The French intertional won the Serie A title twice with the Italian giants before a then world-record £89m transfer to United in 2016. He flew to Turin on Friday for his medical before Monday’s announcement.

Pogba last played for United after 19 April because of injury, and was a free agent this summer after he and the club failed to agree a new deal.

In a video on Juventus’ social media, Pogba said: “As you can see, I’m back and I’m very happy – I can’t wait to start with you and win trophies with you. We’ll be there on the pitch in the stadium, all together.”

Juventus said: “When we say goodbye after an intense adventure shared together, there is always a glimmer of hope that we will see each other again, sooner or later.

“He left as a boy and returns as a man and a champion, but there is one thing that has not changed – the desire to write unforgettable pages of club history together once more.

“Pogba is back and we couldn’t be happier.”

Pogba join Juventus

Pogba, who has 91 international caps, was influential as France won the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

He scored 16 goals for United in the 2018-19 campaign, but over the past three seasons found the net eight times in 91 appearances, with one from 27 last term.

Pogba scored 39 goals in 233 appearances across his two spells at the club, but his final home appearance against Norwich City in April saw him jeered by United supporters as he was substituted.

Mobile and Internet network outages hit Canada

A major outage in mobile and Internet networks has disrupted activities of banking, calling, cashless payments and policing in Canada.

The outage disturbed some of the North American country’s top activities which was said to be improving late Friday.

Telecoms firm Rogers reported progress late in the day, stating that “wireless services are starting to recover.”

According to CNBC, one-quarter of Canada’s Internet connections were “knocked out,” quoting the data from NetBlocks, an Internet watchdog group.

Rogers is Canada’s top mobile carrier, with more than 11 million wireless subscribers and nearly three million Internet users — collectively controlling along with Bell Inc. and Telus Corp. almost 90 per cent of the wireless market.
It was not immediately ascertained what led to the breakdown of the business activities running online.
Evan Koronewski, a spokesman for the Communications Security Establishment, a government agency responsible for cybersecurity and signals intelligence, told the media that “at this time, CSE has no indication this is related to malicious cyber threats.”

Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said he had spoken with the Rogers CEO and shared “the frustration of millions of Canadians.”

This unacceptable situation is why quality, diversity and reliability are key to our telecom network,” Champagne said on Twitter.

Police in several cities, including the capital Ottawa and Toronto — Canada’s largest metropolis — lamented that people were incapacitated to call 911 for emergencies due to the outage.
The city of Montreal also said its municipal services line was down.
Across the country, Rogers’ customers complained about not being able to make calls or use the internet.
Several major banks said money transfers and cashless payments could not be processed. Telephone and online banking, as well as ATM withdrawals, were also affected.
The Royal Bank of Canada tweeted that the outage was “affecting all financial institutions” in the country.
Also, coffee shops and retailers in several city centres posted signs saying they were accepting “cash only” for purchases.
And the Canada Border Services Agency tweeted that arriving travellers would have to use paper forms to provide mandatory travel and public health information, as its mobile app had been affected by the outage.

The R&B singer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison on sex trafficking charges and still has more charges pending

In a letter written to the judge ahead of R. Kelly’s sentencing, obtained by AllHipHop , Joycelyn Savage identifies herself as Robert Kelly’s fiancée.

In her plea for leniency, Joycelyn insists she has wrongly been portrayed as a victim by the government and that R. Kelly is the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

Joycelyn wrote: “My relationship with Robert is amazing. Hes the best thing thats ever happened to me. We have a very special connection and are deeply in love. I still support Robert to this day because I love him and will always be here to support him.”

She continued: “Robert is not the monster that the government has described him to be. The Robert I know is very sweet, gentle, and kind. At the end of the day, he has always made sure that Im taken care of and any other women he was with as well.”

Joycelyn’s family spoke out on June 29, the day the R.Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but didn’t mention that she is engaged to the singer.

According to CBS 46, attorney Gerald A. Griggs released a statement saying, “Joycelyn Savage’s parents are delighted with the verdict handed down today by Judge Donnelly. They hope it will continue to send a strong message that sexual predators will be punished.” for their illegal behavior.”

He added: “It is their continued hope to reunite and reconnect with their daughter. They hope Joycelyn will now return home. They are pleased that the Court has heard the voices of the survivors.”

George Floyd’s killer Derek Chauvin gets 21 years prison sentence

Derek Chauvin: Prosecutors to seek harsher sentence

Former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights.

Chauvin, 46, pleaded guilty to the separate federal civil rights charges in December.

He is already serving a 22-year state prison sentence for the on-duty murder of Mr Floyd, a 46-year-old black man.

The two sentences will run concurrently and Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison.

But he will almost certainly spend more time behind bars following the sentencing. His sentence is due to be followed by five years of supervised release.

“George’s life matters,” Mr Floyd’s brother, Philonese, said in court on Thursday as he asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 25 years.

Chauvin, who is white, was convicted on murder and manslaughter charges in Minnesota for kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.

The killing – captured on a bystander’s phone camera – sparked global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racial injustice and police use of force.

The federal charges against Chauvin included two counts for depriving Mr Floyd of his rights by kneeling on his neck as he was in handcuffs, and by failing to provide medical care during the May 2020 arrest.

As part of the plea agreement, Chauvin also pleaded guilty to violating the rights of a then-14-year-old boy during another arrest that took place in 2017.

According to the indictment, Chauvin held the boy by the throat, hit him in the head with a flashlight and held his knee on the boy’s neck and upper back while he was handcuffed and not resisting. Like Mr Floyd, the boy was black.

Prosecutors said that unreleased bodycam footage showed Chauvin kneeling on the boy’s back for 17 minutes while he cried out for his mother.

When Chauvin pleaded guilty, prosecutors asked that he serve his sentence concurrently with his murder sentence. He had been facing life in prison if he were to be convicted at a second criminal trial.

In court on Thursday, his lawyer requested a sentence of 20 years, saying that he showed respect for the legal process during his trial and is not at risk of repeating his offences.

Addressing the court in what is likely to be his last legal hearing for years, Chauvin said that the judge had a difficult decision, given the “politically-charged environment,” and recognised that the court strives for fairness.

Addressing Mr Floyd’s children, some of whom were present in court, Chauvin said that he wishes them “all the best in their life” and that they have “excellent guidance in becoming good adults”. He did not apologise.

“For your actions, you must be held accountable,” Judge Paul Magnuson said before handing down the sentence.

He concluded the 35-minute hearing by wishing Chauvin “the very best in his future”.

Less than a week ago we honored my father in his own backyard. My friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps saluted him with song. He FELT the love and reveled in it until he could no longer speak. Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath. We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing.

That Peace still abides. All is well. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts

Earlier this week, Oprah shared that she surprised her father with a special gathering of his closest family and friends. In a video posted on her Instagram and filmed by her best friend Gayle King, Oprah tells her followers that she wanted the chance to celebrate her ailing father, while he was still able to enjoy it.

Elon Musk terminates 44B Twitter deal

Elon Musk is formally ending his $44 billion bid to buy Twitter.

In a fresh SEC filing on Friday July 8, Twitter shared a letter it received from Elon Musk’s legal team indicating displeasure with the company’s offered information regarding the level of “spam and fake accounts” on its service.

“Mr. Musk is terminating the Merger Agreement because Twitter is in material breach of multiple provisions of that Agreement, appears to have made false and misleading representations upon which Mr. Musk relied when entering into the Merger Agreement, and is likely to suffer a Company Material Adverse Effect,” Musk’s lawyers wrote in a letter to Twitter’s Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde.

Musk points to his repeated claims that Twitter is likely misleading investors and users about the number of automated accounts on its platform, which the company has long estimated to be under 5 percent.

Nigeria suddenly removed from list of countries eligible for Turkish e-Visa after Kuje Prison Break

Nigerians have reportedly been barred from accessing the e-visa provisions of Republic of Turkey.

Leadership Newspaper reported that Nigerian visa applicants have been advised to apply via any Turkish Consulate. The sudden change came without prior notice or communication from the Turkish Mission in Nigeria.

It however came shortly after some suspected terrorists attacked Kuje prison in Abuja and freed some high-profile Boko Haram terrorists.

One of the affected Nigerians said in a viral message;

“Just putting this out there. Someone out there with a Schengen /UK/US visa might be booking a ticket to Turkey right now thinking they will apply for a visa electronically. DONOT. Turkey decided to delist Nigerians from the e-visa list yesterday evening. With no prior warning/ communication. They clearly don’t rate us. Anyway all Nigerians have to apply  via the consulate wherever they are.

“Turns out so many people are/were planning to go to Turkey soon. Honestly, just apply through the consulate. There is still no information online. No press release, nothing! They are disrespectful. An agent told me she applied on behalf of someone yesterday and within the space of 5 minutes the message on the site had changed. Apparently, it has something to do with the “prison break”/ concerns of terrorism.

“Unfortunately, nationals of the country that you selected are not eligible for e-visa. Kindly visit the nearest Turkish mission to apply for a visa application. Please visit http:www.visa.gov.tr for the full list of the Turkish Embassies and Consulates.”

Members of the diplomatic community such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada also issued security alerts to its citizens in Nigeria after the jail break.

7 Nigerian pilgrims deported from Saudi Arabia over fake visa

Saudi Arabian authorities have deported seven intending pilgrims from Kano State, who departed to Jidda on Thursday July 7.

While five of the intending pilgrims who were deported over fake visas issued to them travelled to  Saudi Arabia for hajj through tour operators, the remaining two were from the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board.

One of the deported pilgrims, Dahiru Yau Musa, told Daily Trust that he secured his visa through Quraish Travel Agency, while the remaining four got theirs from Mafimishkila Travel and Tours.

He said they did not know they were issued fake visas until they reached King Abdulazeez Airport.

Musa said;

“We were in the queue with other pilgrims and when it was my turn, they directed me to stay behind. It was when they finished the screening of other pilgrims, they told me about the fake visa.

“They spoke with NAHCON officials. It took them some time trying to resolve the issue but all to no avail. At the end, we were told that we were being taken back to Nigeria. And the rest is history now.

“It was really a sad experience. I couldn’t believe it will happen to me. You know as Muslim to see yourself there (Holy Land) and you were taken back to your country is not something easy to comprehend.”

Musa vowed to take legal action against the tour operator. He added;

“Since I returned, my tour operator was looking for me to meet with me, but I am avoiding him because I don’t want to hear anything from him until we get to the court.

“Again I will take the issue to Saudi Consulate here so that I can be cleared for future travel.”

Executive Secretary of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Muhammad Abba Danbatta who also confirmed the deportation, said the two deported pilgrims were not from the board, but were infiltrated into the list by one of the staff members.

Danbatta stated that the issue had been reported to relevant authorities for further investigation, adding that the staff member would face the wrath of the law.

He said;

“When I heard the incident around 2:00 am, I rushed to the airport and met with the two pilgrims one female and a male who claimed to be from our Sumaila centre.

“I called the Sumaila centre officer but he doesn’t know them and they did not know him. It was when we carried out thorough investigation we found out that the two pilgrims were deceived by one of our staff members by name Abdurrahman. He issued fake visas as well as receipts to them.

“As I am talking to you now we are yet to meet with the accused staff as he couldn’t be reached on his mobile phone.

“But the case has been handed over to the Immigration for further investigation. I am assuring you that if he is found guilty he will definitely face the wrath of law accordingly.”

Anthony Joshua seems desperate to get his titles back from Oleksandr Usyk

Former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, is desperate to win back the WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO titles from Oleksandr Usyk.

Back in September,  Usyk secured a uninimous decision victory over Joshua, dethroning the WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion in London.

With the boxers set to meet again, Joshua is determined to win them back from the Ukrainian.

“Someone told me:” You have a chance to become a three-time world champion, and I replied that this is not at all the place where you want to be. This is not the way I would advise young people to go. Because you want to hold the titles all the time, be the champion, and not part with them. I really want to return the titles.”

AJ was evidently tired of all the talk around the fight and can’t wait to get back in the ring against the Ukrainian.

“Too much talk for me. Less talk, more action. Just let me get in the ring and do my job. I’m not a comedian, and I’m not a speech writer. I am hungry and desperate to win back the titles,” the boxer said.

Usyk vs. Joshua fight will take place on August 20 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In June, an official announcement of a rematch between the Ukrainian and the British was made.
