Joan Laporta promised to try all in his power to re-sign Lionel Messi next summer

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta has vowed to do all he can to re-sign Lionel Messi next summer when the PSG star’s contract expires.

The Argentine playmaker, 35, exited the Nou Camp to join the French giants on a free transfer in 2021, ending his 21-year Barcelona career.

Laporta, who admitted he feels ‘indebted’ to the Argentine superstar, is set to do everything to bring him back to the Catalan club next year.

‘I would like him to end his career in a Barca shirt, and be applauded at all the stadiums.

‘I feel partially responsible for how things ended, and I feel that this is a temporary end and that we will make this dream a reality. At least that is the dream.’

Recall it was a bitter end for Messi after he submitted a transfer request via burofax after Barca were thumped 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League back in 2020.

The playmaker almost made a U-turn to remain at the club, but the ongoing financial problems worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic prevented Barcelona from offering Messi a new deal, paving the way for him to join PSG.

Messi notched 670 goals and 302 assists in 776 games during his two-decade spell with the LaLiga giants.

Shakira may go to jail for 8 years and fined £19million over £12m tax fraud

Pop star Shakira is reportedly facing up to eight years in prison she’s found guilty of an alleged massive £12m tax fraud.

The Hips Don’t Lie’ singer, 45, is charged with defrauding the Spanish treasury out of millions over a three-year period between 2012 and 2014.

Spanish prosecutors are pushing for the highest-possible sentence over six separate counts of tax fraud totalling 14.5 million euros (£12.2m).

As well as an eight-year prison sentence, state prosecutors want the mum-of-two to be slapped with a 23 million euro fine (£19.2m).

Shakira is accused of pretending to live abroad to avoid paying tax despite moving to Barcelona in 2011 to be with her ex, Spanish defender Gerard Pique.

She has already paid out an estimated three million euros (£2.5m) to the Spanish taxman.

She is accused of using the illegal arrangement from 2012 and 2014, when she was in a relationship with footballer Gerard Pique who lives and plays in Barcelona.

The couple, who have two children together, split earlier this year amid allegations in local media that Pique had been unfaithful.

Shakira

Shakira is said to have tried to rekindle the relationship twice but was rebuffed by Pique, before the pair confirmed their separation.

Despite the split, the couple seem to have remained on civil terms and have been seen attending their children’s sports games together.

A spokesman for Shakira said: ‘Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer, and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm.

‘Unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office, which loses one out of every two lawsuits with its taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case.

‘Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process.’

Shakira, previously a tax resident in the Bahamas, only registered as a full tax resident in Spain in 2015.

Official residents in Spain pay Spanish taxes on their worldwide income.
People who spent more than 183 days in a given calendar year in Spain are considered Spanish residents for tax purposes.

Tax inspectors spent more than a year checking up on Shakira, even visiting her favourite hairdressers in Barcelona and checking her social media to try to show she spent most of the three years in dispute in Spain.

They concluded she had spent 242 days in Spain in 2012, 212 days in 2013 and 243 days in the country in 2014.

Shakira could be jailed for eight years and fined and fined £19million if convicted.

“Nigeria is currently broke” – Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, says Nigeria is currently broke.

The Minister mentioned this while speaking at the 2022 World Day Against Child Labour.

According to him, the Federal Government does not have money to prosecute capital projects next year, a development that might worsen unemployment and poverty.

“I can tell you that Nigeria is broke. There is no money to fund capital projects next year. As you can see, the dollar that has been hovering around N500 and N600 is now above N700. The truth is that there is no money anywhere. The money that the FAAC (Federation Account Allocation Committee) has been sharing is money from taxes, customs and other revenue-generating agencies.

The National Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) no longer remits money to FAAC. So, the situation calls for patriotism from all Nigerians. The lack of money to fund capital projects would have implications on the capacity to create jobs. If jobs are not created, poverty will increase in the country.”?he said

Child bride who killed her husband to be hanged in Iran

A child bride in Iran who killed the man she was forced to marry when she was only 15 is among three women executed for murdering their husbands this week.

Soheila Abadi, now 25, was hanged in prison after she was convicted of killing her husband over ‘family disputes’ according to the sentencing courts.

Two other women executed on Wednesday were also convicted of murdering their husbands, Human Rights Watch said.

Activists claim that most incidents of wives killing their husbands are sparked by domestic violence but the Iranian courts do not take this into account.

The trio are among 32 people hanged in the country in just the past week.

It comes amid a surge in executions across the country, with at least 251 people killed by the state killed in the first six months of the year, Amnesty International reported.

The figure is more than double the number executed over the same period last year.

The charity accused Iran of carrying out a ‘horrific spree’ of executions, with many of those sentenced to death not having had a fair trial.

Of the 251 executed, 146 of them were for murder, and at least 86 were for drug offences which should not warrant the death penalty under international law.

Diana Eltahawy, deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said: ‘The state machinery is carrying out killings on a mass scale across the country in an abhorrent assault on the right to life.

Beyoncé talks about Jay Z cheating on her in her new Renaissance album

Beyoncé’s long-awaited and highly-anticipated album was released today July 29, and it has created quite a buzz already.

While there’s quite a lot to be discussed following the album release, it was also noticed that the singer referenced her husbandJay-Z‘s past cheating, which were focal themes of her last album Lemonade and his project 4:44

Bey also referenced the infamous lift incident which saw her sister, Solange physically attack Jay.

Appearing to refer to the criticism around their relationship over the past six years on Plastic Off The Sofa, Beyonce sings:

“We don’t need the world’s acceptance.

“They’re too hard on me, they’re too hard on you, boy.”

She also appears to show a softer side towards Jay, who she married in a top-secret intimate wedding on April 4, 2008 — the fourth day of the fourth month, in honour of their favourite number

Bey added;

“Boy, I know you can’t help but to be yourself around me, yourself around me.

“And I know nobody’s perfect so I’ll let you be, I’ll let you be

“It’s the way that you wear your emotions on both of your sleeves, til the face you make when I tell you that I had to leave.”

She then confidently reminded Jay that she’s the “only” one. “I’m one of one, I’m number one, I’m the only one,” she sang. “Don’t even waste your time trying to compete with me. No one else in this world can think like me. I’m twisted, contradicted, keep him addicted.”

Protecting her husband, who she met when she was 18 and in girl band Destiny’s Child, she sings:

“I’ll always be your secret weapon in your arsenal.

“And I know you had it rough growing up, but that’s OK, I like it rough. Baby when you let your feelings get in the way. I still like it, baby, oh I like it, baby.”

Referring to the 2014 fight between her sister Solange and Jay-Z in a New York hotel lift, she sings;

“Jay and Solange have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.

“They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in public.”

In the album’s second song, Cozy, Beyonce appears to hint at the incident, singing: “She’s a god, she’s a hero, she survived, all she been through, confident and she lethal.

“Might I suggest you don’t f*** with my sis, because she comfortable. Comfortable in my skin, cozy with who I am.”

Beyonce and Jay Z

Security camera footage at the time, showed Solange throwing punches at her brother-in-law before a bodyguard dragged her off the rapper.

In the 58-second clip Beyonce was seen frozen in the corner of the lift.

Renaissance marks Beyoncé’s first solo studio album since 2016’s Lemonade. Since then, she released Everything Is Love, a 2018 joint album with her husband, Jay-Z. In 2019, she put out Homecoming, essential the live album of her 2018 headlining Coachella performance, before releasing The Lion King: The Gift, a companion album to the live-action movie. The Gift featured several new Beyoncé songs, but none of these projects had the same weight as a solo album.

While Lemonade currently stands at certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, Everything Is Love has only reached Gold status, and the other projects haven’t crossed that threshold. Lemonade remains one of Beyoncé’s best-selling albums, matching 2006’s B’Day in Platinum status (3x). Only her 2003 album, Dangerously In Love, has sold more.

“It is an amazing feeling to sign. When I heard about Everton’s interest I wanted to get it done straight away because of the club and how good the team is,” McNeil told evertontv.

“I feel playing under a manager like Frank Lampard, he will help me to get my stats up – and that is what I want to do and improve my game.”

The attacking midfielder, who has seven goals and 17 assists in the Premier League to his name, had also been attracting interest from London sides West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Manager Lampard added: “I have been a big admirer of Dwight for some time. He has huge talent and is exactly the type of player we want to bring into the squad to help us improve.”

Jules Kounde may sign up with Barcelona soon

Barcelona have agreed a deal with Sevilla for defender Jules Kounde, with the Catalan club pipping Chelsea to the France international.

The Spanish club confirmed on Thursday night, July 28, that they have reached an agreement with Sevilla for the signing of Kounde, with the defender now set for a medical in Catalonia before putting pen to paper on a contract.

The deal comes as a big blow to Chelsea and manager Thomas Tuchel, who prioritised the France international in their attempt to rebuild the defence.  Kounde was reportedly very close to joining Chelsea for a fee upwards of €65 million, but Barcelona hijacked the transfer.

Kounde will become Barcelona’s fifth signing in what is turning out to be a busy summer for the Laliga side, ifhe passes his medical.

Chelsea have moved to block Marcos Alonso’s transfer to the Catalan giants in response to Barca snatching Kounde

“There is high rate of cultism and internet fraud among police officers” – AIG laments

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 (Lagos and Ogun), Adeleke Adeyinka Bode, has lamented the high rate of cultism and internet fraud among police officers.

The AIG, while addressing men of the Ogun State Police command Thursday, July 28, during his visit to the command in Abeokuta, said policemen engaging in criminal activities are sabotaging the efforts of the police force to rid the nation of crimes and giving the force a bad name.

He pointed out that a policeman who belongs to a cult group would do everything to ensure members of his group are protected, even when they have committed an offense.

He warned such officers to desist from acts that may trigger civil unrest like the one that happened during the End SARS protests.

He then charged the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, to fish out cops involved in cultism and cybercrime.

Adeleke said: “If you (police officers) are a cultist I don’t think you should show it to people because it is wrong; and do you know why it is wrong even if you are not wicked? if you belong to a cult group, there is no way you are not going to favour a member of your cult, unless you are not a good cult member.

“In a situation where a police officer is a member of a cult group and people in the society know that he is a cultist, his activities are related to cultism, I think it is sad.

“There are some of our policemen too now that are into cybercrime, popularly know as Yahoo-Yahoo, especially policemen who find themselves in places where we have institutions of higher learning; it is very common.

“You (Commissioner) need to fish them out and you need to preach to them.”

He proceeded to warn his men to be more professional and civil while dealing with members of the public to avoid a repeat of the End SARS protest.

He said: “Another EndSARS may lead to the end of the police.

“The criminals that perpetrated that act that time are going to come out more experienced. The mistakes they made then, they are not going to make them now and that is why your conduct towards the members of the public must be effective.”

The actor said he used his art, which also depicted actor Al Pacino and folk legend Bob Dylan, to “reflect on those who matter most to me, like my family, friends and people I admire”.

“I’ve always used art to express my feelings,” the 59-year-old actor fresh from winning a defamation court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard said.

“My paintings surround my life, but I kept them to myself and limited myself. No one should ever limit themselves.”

Framed individual images sold for £3,950 and the complete portfolio of four images sold for £14,950 each.

Depp’s post on Instagram, captioned only “NOW AT #CASTLEFINEART”, prompted a rush of traffic to the gallery’s website causing it to crash.

In a press release, the gallery described the actor’s work as existing “at the intersection of pop art and street art” and as “pop art with feeling”.

Earlier this month, Depp sold a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), called Never Fear Truth, which also depicted his close friends and heroes, raising nearly £660,000 ($800,000) for charity.

“Russia doing better than expected despite sanctions” – IMF

Despite damaging economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s economy appears to be doing better than expected as it benefits from high energy prices, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

The economic sanctions were meant to cut off Russia from the global financial system and choke off funds available to Moscow to finance the war.

But the International Monetary Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook upgraded Russia’s GDP estimate for 2022 by a remarkable 2.5 percentage points, although its economy is still expected to contract by 6%.

While major economies including the United States and China are slowing, “Russia’s economy is estimated to have contracted during the second quarter by less than previously projected, with crude oil and non-energy exports holding up better than expected,” the report said.

After starting the year below $80 a barrel, oil prices spiked to nearly $129 in March, before easing back to a little over $105, while natural gas prices are rising again and approaching their recent peak.

Meanwhile, despite the sanctions, Russia’s “domestic demand is also showing some resilience thanks to containment of the effect of the sanctions.”

The IMF added that Europe is facing the brunt of the fallout given its reliance on Russia for energy, and the situation could worsen dramatically if Moscow cuts off gas exports, and once the European Union imposes a ban on Russian oil delivered by sea starting next year.

Cristiano Ronaldo to be released from the final year of his contract at Manchester United

Manchester United striker, Cristiano Ronaldo has informed the club he wishes to be relinquished from his contract to free him to join a Champions League side.

The Portuguese striker returned to Manchester United on Tuesday July 26, with his agent Jorge Mendes to discuss his future with the club after missing all of United’s pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia.

The Mail report the Portugal superstar wants to be freed from the final year of his £360,000-a-week contract.

United’s stance has not changed and they do not want to sell, nor have they received any enquires.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich were interrested in signing Ronaldo but the clubs ruled themselves out of the race.

Atletico Madrid have shown an interest, but there has been several backlash from their fans.

The Ronaldo saga is set to rumble on over the summer, but he is likely to remain professional, the report added.

He underwent medical tests and then trained on Wednesday July 27, before watching his team-mates in a behind-closed-doors friendly match against Wrexham.

The Red Devils play friendlies against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, followed by a game against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. It is thought that he could feature in the latter fixture at Old Trafford.

North Korea threatens South Korea with Nuclear nukes – Kim Jong-un

North Korea is ready to mobilise its nuclear forces, leader Kim Jong-un has claimed.

Speaking at a Korean War anniversary event, Kim said boosting North Korea’s defence is an “urgent historical task” adding that the country was “fully ready for any military confrontation” with the US, state news agency KCNA reported.

The comments come amid concern that North Korea could be preparing a seventh nuclear test, which the US warned last month could happen at any time.

North Korea’s most recent nuclear test was in 2017. But tensions have been rising on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has tested an unprecedented number of missiles this year – 31 compared to 25 during the whole of its last record-breaking year, 2019, according to the US special representative to North Korea Sung Kim.

In June South Korea responded by launching eight missiles of its own.

Although the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, North Korea claims it as a victory against the US. The annual “Victory Day” celebrations are marked by military parades, fireworks and dancing.

In his speech to mark the event on Wednesday, July 27, Kim said nuclear threats from the US required North Korea to achieve the “urgent historical task” of beefing up its self-defence.

The US had misrepresented North Korea’s regular military exercises as provocations, he added.

Kim also addressed reports that South Korea is planning to counter the North Korean nuclear threat by mounting precautionary strikes in the event of an imminent attack.

Kim said that South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol’s government and military would be “obliterated” if he carried out pre-emptive strikes.

Since taking office in May, South Korean President Yoon has laid out a new, more aggressive defence policy towards North Korea. It would allow South Korean forces to pre-emptively strike the North, if Seoul believes it is under imminent threat of a nuclear attack from Pyongyang.

This so-called “Kill Chain” strategy proposed by South Korea would allow South Korea to launch pre-emptive ballistic missiles and air strikes on North Korean targets, including taking out the North Korean military command and control structures. In other words, attempting to kill Kim Jong-Un himself.

*******************

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un says he is prepared to “wipe out” South Korea with nuclear weapons over Seoul’s provocative joint military exercises with the US, accusing the two countries of pushing the peninsula to the “brink of war”.

Speaking on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the Korean War ending, Kim branded talk of military action against his country as a “suicidal act, absurd and extremely dangerous”.

Kim also slammed Washington’s apparent demonization of Pyongyang’s military developments as provocations, and warned Seoul’s “military gangsters” to refrain from doing the same.

U.S economy is shrinking, raising fears of a recession

The U.S. economy shrank from April through June for a second straight quarter, contracting at a 0.9% annual pace and raising fears that the nation may be approaching a recession.

The decline that the Commerce Department reported Thursday July 28, in the gross domestic product the broadest gauge of the economy followed a 1.6% annual drop from January through March. Consecutive quarters of falling GDP constitute one informal, though not definitive, indicator of a recession.

The report comes at a critical time as the country’s consumers and businesses have been struggling under the weight of punishing inflation and higher borrowing costs.

The report comes just a day after the US Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.75 per cent for the second time in a row as it continues efforts to conquer the worst surge in inflation in four decades.

The Fed is hoping to achieve a notoriously difficult “soft landing”: An economic slowdown that manages to rein in rocketing prices without triggering a recession.

The strength of America’s job market, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said at a news conference on Wednesday, “makes you question the GDP data”.

Asked whether he thought the US was in a recession, Mr Powell said he did not think it was, citing the “remarkably strong” labour market and adding “it doesn’t make sense” for the country to be in a recession right now.

Mr Powell also correctly noted that US GDP data is often revised at a later date. In its press release on Thursday morning the BEA noted that the GDP estimate was based on source data that are either incomplete or subject to revision from the source agency and that the second estimate for the quarter will be released on 25 August.

The most widely accepted definition of a recession comes from the National Bureau of Economic Research, a group of economists whose Business Cycle Dating Committee defines it as “a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months”.

In a statement released by the White House, President Joe Biden said: “It’s no surprise that the economy is slowing down as the Federal Reserve acts to bring down inflation. But even as we face historic global challenges, we are on the right path and we will come through this transition stronger and more secure. Our job market remains historically strong, with unemployment at 3.6 per cent and more than 1 million jobs created in the second quarter alone. Consumer spending is continuing to grow.”

Prior to the release of today’s data, forecasters surveyed by the data firm FactSet had estimated that the nation’s GDP made a tepid annual gain of 0.8 per cent between the beginning of April and the end of June. Others believed a more anaemic level of 0.2 per cent was possible.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s running estimate of GDP growth, based on available economic data, signalled a 1.2 per cent second quarter decline was on the cards.

“Tinubu not fit and qualified to be President, He’s 86” – His inlaw says

Renowned flutist Tee Mac has garnered attention on Facebook by sharing his thought on the Presidential Candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli, a former President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), said he and Remi Tinubu are cousins and this makes her husband Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu his in-law but he stopped supporting Tinubu and stopped visiting the family.

He made this known while responding to a Facebook user, Yemi Olakitan, who declared his support for the APC Presidential flag bearer.

Tee Mac also said that Tinubu is 86 years old and not 70.

He wrote: “Dear Yemi. Any body can choose any candidate, but an intelligent person will ask himself the question: do I choose rightly! Is the man qualified! Is he honest! Does he tell us the truth about his age, background and how he made his money! Is this man healthy enough at 86 to take up the task of a totally run down country?

“You see Tinubu is my in-law. His wife Remi is my cousin. Her Itsekiri mother and my Itsekiri mother are sisters. I have know Tinubu since the mid 80s personally and even arranged for him to stay in my stepfather’s house ( Sir Mobolaji Bank-Anthony) in London when he went into exile.

“I stopped supporting him and stop family visits etc when he sold that Buhari to the nation in 2015. My advise to the nation is that this man is absolutely not qualified to become our next president. Respectfully Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli.”

Yang Huiyan, the richest chinese woman, loses over $12.7billion fortune as Chinese real estate sector crashes

Asia’s wealthiest woman has lost more than half her fortune after China’s real estate sector was rocked by a cash crunch.

Yang Huiyan, 41, a majority shareholder and vice-chairwoman of Chinese property giant Country Garden, saw her net worth plunge by more than 52 per cent from $23.7billion to $11.3billion in the past year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Yang’s fortune took another major hit on Wednesday, July 27, when Country Garden’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell 15 percent after the company announced it would sell new shares to raise capital.

The property sector is estimated to account for 18 to 30 percent of the country’s GDP and is a key driver of growth in the world’s second-largest economy.

According to report, the crash started when Chinese authorities cracked down on excessive debt in the property sector in 2020, leaving major players such as Evergrande and Sunac struggling to make payments and forcing them to negotiate with creditors as they teetered on the edge of bankruptcy.

Yang inherited shares of the billion-dollar company from her father Yang Guoqiang. He set up property development company Country Garden in Guangdong, south China, in 1992.

Guoqiang grew it into one of the largest property development companies in China.

He transferred his shares to her in 2005 and she became Asia’s richest woman two years later aged just 26 after the developer’s initial public offering in Hong Kong gifted her with around $16billion.

By 2020 she was worth more than $20billion but she is barely holding onto her title of Asia’s richest woman after China’s property crash cut her wealth in two.

Chemical fibres tycoon Fan Hongwei has become a close runner-up with a net worth of $11.2billion as of Thursday.

“We’ve killed 30 terrorists behind attack on Presidential guard troops” – DHQ says

The Defence Headquarters has said that troops have eliminated 30 of the terrorists that attacked troops of the 7 guards battalion in the Bwari area of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko disclosed this at the Bi-Weekly news conference on military operations in Abuja on Thursday July 28.

Onyeuko said the operation was conducted by troops of 7 Guards Battalion and 167 Special Forces Battalion in conjunction with the air component of “Operation Whirl Punch” between Sunday and Tuesday.

Troops successfully cleared Kawu and Ido villages, neutralising the terrorists and destroying their enclave and hideout.

The ground troops also recovered six motorcycles, two AK47 rifles, and one fully loaded LMG magazine amongst others during mop-up.

Onyeuko said;

“The hierarchy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies wishes to re-assured Nigerians of its commitment and pact with all Nigerians.

“With the recent operations carried out from July 23, we wish to assure residents of FCT in particular that we are undaunted and unrelenting in our efforts to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

“People should go about their normal business as their safety is guaranteed.

“The support and cooperation of all Nigerians is hereby solicited as security is everybody’s business.

“Citizens are encouraged to report unusual persons in your community to security agencies. If you see something, say something.’

Goodnews: 4th person cured of HIV disease

A man who has lived with HIV since the 1980s has become the fourth person to be cured of the disease as announced by AIDS researchers on Wednesday July 27.

The 66-year-old man named the “City of Hope” patient after the Californian center where he was treated, was cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant for leukaemia.

He was declared in remission in the lead up to the International AIDS Conference, which begins in Montreal, Canada on Friday.

While the transplant was planned to treat the now-66-year-old’s leukaemia, the doctors also sought a donor who was naturally resistant to the virus that causes AIDS, a mechanism that first worked to cure the “Berlin patient”, Timothy Ray Brown, in 2007.

As well as being the oldest, the patient has also had HIV the longest, having been diagnosed in 1988 with what he described as a “death sentence” that killed many of his friends.

He has been on antiretroviral therapy (ART) to control his condition for more than 30 years.

Doctors who presented the data ahead of the International Aids Society’s (IAS) 2022 meeting said that the case opened up the potential for older patients with HIV and blood cancer to access the treatment, particularly as the donor was not a family member.

Jana Dickter, an infectious disease specialist at the City of Hope, told AFP that because the latest patient was the oldest yet to achieve remission, his success could be promising for older HIV sufferers who also have cancer.

Dickter is the lead author of research on the patient which was announced at a pre-conference in Montreal but has not been peer reviewed.

“When I was diagnosed with HIV in 1988, like many others, I thought it was a death sentence,” said the patient, who does not want to be identified.

“I never thought I would live to see the day that I no longer have HIV,” he said in a City of Hope statement. “I am beyond grateful.”

Also announced at the AIDS conference was research about a 59-year-old Spanish woman with HIV who has maintained an undetectable viral load for 15 years despite stopping antiretroviral therapy.

Sharon Lewin, president-elect of the International AIDS Society which convenes the conference, said that it was not quite the same as the City of Hope patient, because the virus remained at a very low level.

She also pointed to a “truly exciting development” towards identifying HIV in an individual cell, which is “a bit like finding a needle in a haystack”.

Manchester United confirm £55m signing of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax

Manchester United have completed the £55million move of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

The Argentine international officially completed his move to Old Trafford on Wednesday, signing a five-year contract and reuniting with former Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag.

Speaking after becoming United’s third signing of the summer, Martinez said: “It’s an honour to join this great football club. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment and, now that I’m here, I’m going to push myself even further.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that’s what I want to continue at Manchester United. There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that, under this manager and coaches, and together with my new team-mates, we can do it.

“I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me. I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do this.”

Martinez made 120 appearances for Ajax after moving from Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia for £6.3m in 2019, and also played for Newell’s Old Boys. He has won seven caps for Argentina since making his senior debut in March 2019, and played once in the country’s successful Copa America campaign in 2021.

Martinez played under Ten Hag at Ajax and won the Eredivisie title with the club in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Dutch Cup in 2021.

Over 18,000 cases of monkey pox recorded from 78 countries worldwide – WHO

There have been more than 18,000 cases of monkeypox reported globally from 78 countries, with the majority in Europe, the World Health Organization has said.

So far, 98% of cases outside the countries in Africa where the virus is endemic have been reported in men who have sex with men, the WHO said.

The news from WHO comes after the UN health body declared the outbreak a global health emergency on Saturday.

WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus speaking on Wednesday, July 27 urged the group of infected people to consider reducing the numbers of new sexual partners and swapping contact details with any new partners.

“This is an outbreak that can be stopped… The best way to do that is to reduce the risk of exposure,” Tedros told a news conference from Geneva. “That means making safe choices for yourself and others.” read more

Monkeypox is in the process of being renamed, to avoid the name being “weaponised” or used in a racist way, WHO emergencies director Mike Ryan said.

The WHO cautioned that it takes several weeks after getting the second dose of vaccine to be fully protected, so people should take other precautions until that point.

Around 10% of patients have been hospitalized in the current outbreak and five have died, all of them in Africa, the WHO said.

The disease generally causes mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, fatigue and painful skin lesions that resolve within a few weeks.

Tedros said there were about 16 million doses of approved vaccine available, but only in bulk, so it would take several months to get them into vials.

“No candidate violated law on multiple forms” – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that no candidate violated the provisions of Section 115 of the Electoral Act 2022 relating to the nomination of candidates.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye who admitted that the commission is not vested with the power of arrest and investigation of criminal matters.

Reacting to a report which claimed that President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State; Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and some others who obtained multiple forms ought to have been arrested as defined in Section 152 of the Electoral Act, Okoye said those who obtained and signed multiple forms were aspirants, and not candidates as defined by Section 152 of the Electoral Act.

He told Punch;

“Before someone will come within the compass and contemplation of the law as a candidate, the political party must conduct valid primaries and the sponsoring party must upload the list or information relating to the candidates they intend to sponsor to the commission’s candidates nomination portal and this is in compliance with Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Thereafter, the personal particulars of the candidates will be displayed in the constituencies where they intend to contest the election and this is for claims and objections.

“After this process, the candidates will now fill nomination forms (Forms EC13A, EC13B, EC13C, EC13D and EC13 E) in compliance with Section 30(1) of the Electoral Act. Section 30(1) of the Act provides that a candidate for an election shall be nominated in writing by such number of persons whose names appear on the register of voters in the constituency as the commission may prescribe.

“This is the process covered by Section 115(d) of the Electoral Act. The last day for the submission of nomination forms for presidential candidates and National Assembly candidates is August 8, 2022 while that of governorship and state assembly candidates is August 18, 2022.

“During the conduct of party primaries, the persons you referred to are aspirants as defined by Section 152 of the Electoral Act. The forms they filled as aspirants are the forms of their political parties and not that of the commission. The list submitted by the political parties under Section 29(1) of the Act is the list of candidates the party proposes to sponsor. The only documents signed by the candidates are the affidavit deposed by them. That is not the nomination form as contemplated by Section 115(d) of the Act.”

Section 115(1) (d) of the Act provides that any person who signs a nomination paper or result form as a candidate in more than one constituency at the same election commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment.

Section 152 of the Act defines a candidate to mean a person who has secured the nomination of a political party to contest an election for any elective office.

Conor McGregor and Floyd MayWeather getting set for a rematch worth £130M

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to stage a sensational rematch.

This is coming nearly five years since Mayweather defeated the UFC superstar in a boxing clash by securing a tenth round TKO victory in Las Vegas back in August 2017.

The Sun has now reported that Mayweather is willing to once again put his unbeaten record on the line in a money-spinning match against McGregor.

Mayweather has not fought professionally in the ring since his victory over the Irishman.

It’s said the two parties are close to cutting a deal after Mayweather offered McGregor $157.9million (£130m) for a rematch.

McGregor is only willing to fight Mayweather if the American’s 50-0 undefeated record is on the line.

The fight would be at 155lbs, meaning McGregor would have to cut some weight after he has reportedly tipped the scales at over 190lbs since breaking his leg.

It’s said that the Mayweather would see the rematch with McGregor as the ‘end of the Mayweather era’ and ‘start of the Gervonta Davis era’.

Mayweather is looking at the bout to take place next March in the Middle East, with a potential fight between Davis and Ryan Garcia as an undercard fight.

McGregor hinted at a potential rematch with Mayweather in a now deleted post he made on his Instagram account last month.

Alongside a picture of their first fight, he hinted at the pair facing off one more time as he wrote: ‘I accept.’

The actor, 43, presented the goat to the comedian, 57, during their Rock Hart: Only Headliners Allowed show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, with the goat’s name making reference to Chris’ Oscars altercation with the King Richard star.

Recall, Will, 53, famously stormed on stage during March’s Oscars ceremony and slapped Chris across the face after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaven head, not knowning that she suffers from a medical condition namely alopecia.

In a clip shared to TikTok, Kevin is seen holding the goat by a lead as he remarked: ‘What the f**k did you just say?’

Dave Chappelle, 48, who joined the guys during the show, then said: ‘Don’t act like I’m crazy, you brought the goat here. This n***** [the goat] is confused with the f**k is happening. What you gonna name this goat Chris?’

Neymar to face trial over transfer irregularities

Neymar in tears after losing UEFA champions league final (Photos)

Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, known as Neymar, is due to face trial in October over alleged irregularities in his transfer to Barcelona, judicial sources said on Wednesday.

The Brazilian international, his parents, and former Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu will be tried for alleged corruption related to the forward’s move from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

Rosell and Bartomeu will also face fraud charges in the trial which is scheduled to take place from October 17 to 31.

Neymar left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for a world-record 222 million euros, but it is his move from boyhood club Santos to Barca which has caused controversy.

The case stems from a complaint by Brazilian group DIS, the former owner of a percentage of the player’s rights.

Barcelona officially said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros ($63.6 million), with 40 million euros going to Neymar’s family and 17.1 million to Santos, but Spanish prosecutors later said it actually cost at least 83.3 million euros.

The DIS, which received 6.8 million of the 17.1 million euros paid to Santos, have alleged that Barca and Neymar joined forces to hide the real amount of the transfer.

The prosecution has requested a two-year prison sentence for Neymar, but he has insisted he was only focused on football and that he blindly trusted his father, who is also his agent.

Bartomeu took over the Barcelona presidency from his good friend Rosell, after the latter resigned in January 2014 as he faced charges of corruption over the transfer.

In 2020, Barcelona said they had been cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport over claims of fraud.

A document in 2020 showed Neymar owed more unpaid tax than any other individual on a Spanish authorities’ blacklist.

The tax office refused to say whether Neymar’s presence on that list was linked to his transfer from Santos to Barcelona.

Neymar has also been in trouble with Brazilian tax authorities, being fined for tax evasion in Brazil.

The 30-year-old has recently been playing on PSG’s pre-season tour of Japan as they build up for the season-opening French Champions’ Trophy against Nantes on Sunday in Tel-Aviv.

PDP Senators storm out of plenary, threaten to begin Buhari’s impeachment

Senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have given President Muhammadu Buhari six weeks ultimatum to address the rising insecurity in the country or face impeachment.

Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda, stated this while addressing reporters after the opposition lawmakers stormed out of the Senate plenary angrily, chanting “Buhari must go and Lawan should follow” to protest the worsening insecurity across the country.

Trouble started when the Senate Minority Leader raised a point of order for the Red Chamber to deliberate on issues raised at the closed-door session, which lasted for two hours.

The Senate President Ahmad Lawan had, after the executive session, announced that issues relating to workings of the Senate and unity of Nigeria were discussed and asked the Senate leaders to proceed with the items listed on the Order Paper.

Aduda had raised a point of order to call for deliberation on issues discussed at the closed session, but Lawan ruled him out of order.

Irked by the ruling, the opposition Senators stormed out of the plenary, chanting songs, calling for President Buhari to quit.

Over 60 persons sick and 28 dead after drinking spiked alcohol in India

At least 28 people have died and 60 others have become ill from drinking spiked alcohol with methanol in western India.

The deaths occurred in the Ahmedabad and Botad districts of Gujarat state, where the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

There was 98 percent methanol in the liquor they consumed, that means they had consumed methanol only which has increased the death toll,’ Bhavnagar Ashok Yadav, inspector general of police, told The Times of India.

The Ahmedabad city crime department has arrested a chemical owner Jayesh Khavadiya from Narol and his eight accomplices over suspected bootlegging.

The death toll is expected to increase further after several patients arrived in Ahmedabad civil hospital for treatment.

alcohol in India

Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India, where illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase potency.

In 2020, at least 120 people died after drinking spiked alcohol in India’s northern Punjab state.

Man who murdered a student for rejecting his marriage proposal to be hanged on live TV in Egypt

A judge has ruled that a man who stabbed a student to death when she turned down his marriage proposal should be hanged on LIVE TV in Egypt.

Mohamed Adel, 21, was found guilty of murdering his Mansoura University classmate Naira Ashraf when she turned him down, with the court sentencing him to death on July 6.

The court has now called for his execution to be broadcast live to deter similar crimes from happening in the future.

In its letter to Parliament, the court wrote: ‘The broadcast, even if only part of the start of proceedings, could achieve the goal of deterrence, which was not achieved by broadcasting the sentencing itself.’

Adel was captured in chilling footage attacking Ashraf outside Mansoura University near the Nile Delta on 20th June.

She was just about to sit her final exams, according to local media.

Mohamed Adel

Ashraf died on the spot as angry passersby seized Adel while he was holding the knife and standing over her body, the video shows. She was stabbed several times, including on her neck and chest, local media said.

The knifeman had stalked the student and had resolved to kill her after she rejected his marriage proposal, the court heard.

Mansoura Courthouse preliminarily settled on the death penalty on June 28, confirming the sentence a week later.

An appeal stalled the verdict, which was made public on July 24. Now, the court has requested that the legislature change the statute governing capital punishment so that the execution might be aired live.

‘We still have 60 days to challenge death sentence against Adel,’ said the defendant’s lawyer Farid El-Deeb, who worked as the lead defence lawyer for late ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

“Buhari is tired” – Femi Falana

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana has said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has brought unprecedented hardship to the country.

Falana said this on Tuesday during the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) solidarity protest for the ongoing ASUU strike, which was held in Ikeja, Lagos.

Nigeria Labour Congress, had on Sunday promised to embark on a two-day nationwide protest in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other affiliate unions over the lingering industrial action in public universities in Nigeria.

Falana said the living standards of Nigerians are getting worse, adding that the incumbent administration has left the citizens in a state of frustration.

He recalled the president’s statement that he is eager to leave office.

The lawyer said, “The living standards of our people are getting worse by the day. We didn’t vote for a regime to cause hardship in Nigeria and that is what is going on. As we are gathered here today, terrorism has taken over our country. Hardship has taken over our country. Depression has taken over our country.

“Recession has taken over our country, but President Buhari is junketing all over the world. He’s already told Nigerians that he is tired and anxious to go home. We are therefore saying today that Buhari must go.

“For the lecturers in our tertiary institutions and other workers, we are fully with you. Like our comrades have said this is a warning protest, #EndSars protest will be a child’s play because we’re tired and frustrated and disenchanted. And I join our comrades in saying that enough is enough.

“Don’t let them deceive you by saying there is no money in our country. It’s a lie. We reject the dubious economic programmes of this regime. We reject the neoliberal policy of this regime. We can’t continue promoting poverty in the midst of plenty.”

Snake handler strangled to death by his huge pet snake

A snake handler has died days after his 18-foot-long pet boa constrictor wrapped itself around his neck.

Elliot Senseman, 27, of Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, USA, was pronounced dead in an area hospital on Sunday, July 24, after suffering from what the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office deemed accidental asphyxiation that caused an anoxic brain injury.

Police were called to Senseman’s home by a family member on Wednesday afternoon, July 20.

When they arrived, they found the 27-year-old unresponsive with his 18-foot boa constrictor wrapped around his body.

The snake’s head was far enough away from the man that officers decided to shoot the animal.

Snake handler dies days after being strangled by his huge pet boa constrictor

“Our officers responded and shot the snake with hopes of freeing the victim,”  Lt Peter Nickischer of the Upper Macungie Township Police told Lehigh Valley Live. He also said that police did not know the circumstances of how the attack occurred.

The police lieutenant said in his 19 years doing police work, he’s seen “nothing like this” and that the snake, which eventually died, was “very long, very thick.”

The creature reportedly did not die instantly and slithered away before it was euthanised.

Four days after the attack, Senseman died in hospital.

“My son was unique and kind and should still be with his family and friends,” Senseman’s mother, Heather, told Lehigh Valley Live.

She said her son often rescued snakes and that he “was still working with” the boa constrictor “because it was so aggressive couldn’t be placed yet.”

She said of her son: “He was experienced and would never handle that snake alone.

“He was only checking the enclosure and all appropriate measures were taken. Too many people get these snakes and can’t handle or take care of them. They shouldn’t be bred to be kept as pets. He wanted them to be in a habitat that was as close to their natural environments as possible since they couldn’t be put in the wild.”

A family member told The Daily Beast that Senseman began working with snakes when he was 10 and had experience handling them.

He’s been rescuing snakes for the last six years and was passionate about finding them a new home, the outlet reported.

“A lot of times the snakes were neglected or mistreated and needed medical care,” the relative told the outlet. “He would provide all of that.”

Along with the boa constrictor that killed him, Senseman had two other snakes that he had taken in at the time. In his previous home, the boa was abused and malnourished, according to The Daily Beast.

Insecurity: Fear grips Abuja and its environs

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered a beef up of security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following repeated attacks by suspected terrorists.

.

Residents of Abuja have been living in fear since the invasion of Kuje Prison by the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) on July 5, 2022. Over 800 inmates, including all the Boko Haram suspects in detention, were released during the invasion.

On Monday July 25, terrorists ambushed the Presidential Guards Brigade in Abuja, killing at least three of them. The deceased officers were attacked after they visited the Nigeria Law School in Bwari following a distress call from the authorities of the school.

In a statement released last night, the spokesperson of the Police Force, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP had charged the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) to collaborate with residents in order to ward off adversaries. He added that the force is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the criminals are brought to their kneels.

The statement in part reads;

”We are not leaving any stone unturned to fortify the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

The IGP has ordered for additional deployment of assets to Strategic areas of the FCT while the Force Intelligence Bureau has been charged on robust Intelligence gathering and information sharing amongst other agencies.

All residents of the FCT are urged to synergise and be on the same page with the Police and other security agencies in making sure that we forestall any ugly incidences in and around the FCT,” the statement read.

Europe agrees to ‘reduce the use of gas’ as Russia cuts supply by 20%

European Union countries bracing for further cuts in Russian gas supply approved an emergency plan to curb demand of gas on Tuesday , July 26.

Russia state owned gas company, Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said it would cut flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany to 20 percent starting from Wednesday as Europe faces an increased gas squeeze as winter approaches.

With a dozen EU countries already facing lower Russian supplies, the EU is urging member states to save gas and store it for winter for fear Russia will completely cut off flows in retaliation for Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Energy ministers approved a proposal for all EU countries to voluntarily cut gas use by 15% in the August to March period .

The cuts could be made binding in a supply emergency, provided a majority of EU countries agree to this. But countries agreed to exempt numerous countries and industries from the binding 15% cut, after some governments opposed the EU’s original proposal to apply it to every country.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the agreement will show Russian President Vladimir Putin that Europe remained united in the face of Moscow’s latest gas cuts. “You will not split us,” Habeck said.

Hungary, heavily dependent on Russian energy, was the only country that opposed the deal, two EU officials said.

Gazprom blamed its latest reduction on needing to halt the operation of a turbine – a reason dismissed by EU energy chief Kadri Simson, who called the move “politically motivated.”

Simson said the agreement should ensure countries save enough gas to survive an average winter if Russia fully cut supplies now, but an unusually cold winter would require more severe measures.

Russia supplied 40% of EU gas before it invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, in what Moscow calls a “special military operation”.

Lionel Messi not returning to Barcelona club – Xavi says

Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez has talked down reports of a possible reunion with former Barcelona player and teammate, Lionel Messi.

According to Xavi, he’s satisfied with the current crop of players in his squad and doesn’t need Lionel Messi to be part of it.

Messi has already spent one season in France, after leaving Barca as a free agent but the 35-year-old is being linked with a return to the Camp Nou, where his former team-mate Xavi is now head coach. Messi signed a two-year deal with PSG and could be a free agent next year.

Barca president Joan Laporta told ESPN last week that he considers it his responsibility to ensure Messi has a “more beautiful ending” at Camp Nou following his painful exit last summer.

Laporta said: “Messi was everything. To Barca, he’s been possibly its greatest player,

However, Xavi isn’t entertaining the idea of signing Messi this summer. “He has a contract and it’s impossible right now,” the Barcelona boss told reporters in Dallas on Monday evening ahead of their upcoming friendly against Serie A side Juventus on Tuesday July 26.

“Messi is the best footballer in the world and in history. President Laporta already said that Messi’s story with Barca is not over, but now is not the time to talk about it.”

“(It) makes no sense to speak about Leo Messi’s comeback at Barcelona right now, he’s under contract with PSG so it’s impossible. We’ll see in the future.

“Laporta had already said he hoped it was not yet the end for Messi at Barça,” Xavi added.

“APC presidential delegates currently regretting their decisions” — Rotimi Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has stated that some of the delegates, who voted at the special convention of the APC were now regretting their decisions.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, said some of the voters at the party’s convention took money and are now regretting their decisions.

“Those who voted at the APC primaries, who are they? They are ordinary Nigerians. The small money they got solved their immediate problem, now they are saying they made a mistake, you are now hearing different things” Amaechi said in Port Harcourt at the 60th birthday celebration of Apostle Eugene Ogu, General Overseer of Abundant Life Evangel Mission.

“If you are praying for us, pray for the leadership of the country, but also pray for ordinary Nigerians to be able to choose the right president to govern the country.

“Those Bishops you saw (at the unveiling of Shettima) may not be Bishops but they are Christians. Pray for the ordinary Nigerians. Please vote for APC, I am not joking. May God make you vote for the right candidate that will change Nigeria.

“Giving money is not the solution to Nigeria’s problem. The solution to Nigeria’s problem is that all of you must all rise.

“When I was giving contracts and money, they said Amaechi is not a good man and I left office now, what am I? A saint. When you marry two wives, you know that the first one is better.

“People are now saying when Amaechi was here insecurity was not like this bad. Remember, I was always in the bushes chasing those criminals. When you kidnap, I will come and look for you. I will call the security heads, we go into the bush together and we must recover the man. Now kidnapping is natural, as you are you expect to be kidnapped. Nobody cares.”

A man was dragged away and eaten by lions in India while he was walking home with his family.

Bhaydesh Paiya, 18, had been walking home with his family in the state of Gujarat’s Amreli district at the time of the attack, Indian news outlet Times Now reported.

The lions, a male and a female, jumped out from the bushes and took hold of the victim from behind.

The lions dragged Paiya towards a nearby mango orchard as his family members began crying for help.

“Our staff reached the spot soon but by that time, the victim had been killed. We could recover only body parts of the victim, suggesting the lions had eaten the victim,” Rajdeepsinh Jhala, deputy conservator of forests told Times Now.

The body has been taken to the town of Khambha for a postmortem.

The lions came from the Gir Forest, a wildlife sanctuary.

“After attempts to bait the two big cats failed, we tranquilized the male lion early on Sunday morning and rescued him. We have got the location of the lioness also and efforts are on to cage her,” Jhala told Times Now.

Nigerian screen diva, Shan George, has reacted to the allegations that she had an intimate relationship with Apostle Suleman Johnson.

This comes after popular blogger, Gistlover, dropped the names of some Nigerian actresses who had reportedly been involved with Apostle Johnson Suleman intimately.

A series of allegations were levelled against Apostle Johnson Suleman after videos and messages of actress, Halima Abubakar, surfaced on social media pages.

In the middle of the allegation between Halima Abubakar and Apostle Suleman, Gistlover took to Instagram to mention the names of some Nollywood actresses who he claimed had slept with Apostle Johnson Suleman for money.

Names like Shan George, Lilian Bach, Iyabo Ojo, Ruth Kadiri, Mercy Johnson, Chinyere Winifred, Larriet, Omo Brish, Vivian Metchie, Georgina Onuoha, Ini Edo, Joy Ogbunu, Angel Okorie, Mary Uranta, Queen Nwokwoye, and many others were mentioned.

Reacting to this, Shan George took to her Instagram page and said that she is innocent of every allegation levelled against her. She went further to reveal that Apostle Suleman is one of the kindest and most straightforward persons she knows.

She wrote, “One of the kindest and straightforward persons I know is Apostle Johnson Suleiman. Just like in his numerous sermons, he says it blunt as it is, and that’s something I respect in pple. Not everything is about intimacy.

“As for Gistlover, he’s one person I’ve never met but have a lot of respect for as well. Bcos he speaks for d downtrodden and don’t care if bullet hits him. Me I no fit deny my pple wey I respect. A new study has claimed that people who regularly napped had a 12 percent greater chance of developing high blood pressure and 24 percent higher likelihood of having a stroke than those who do not.

According to the study conducted in China, participants under the age of 60 who reported that they usually napped had a 20 percent higher risk of high blood pressure than those who said they never napped.

“These results are especially interesting since millions of people might enjoy a regular, or even daily nap,” says E. Wang, a professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Xiangya Hospital Central South University, and the study’s corresponding author said in a news release.

For the study, researchers recruited more than 500,000 participants from the U.K. Biobank between the ages of 40 and 69 who lived in the U.K. between 2006 and 2010 to provide blood, urine and saliva samples and lifestyle details. Researchers conducted a napping frequency survey four times between 2006 and 2019.

They categorized participants into groups based on napping frequency — “never/rarely,” “sometimes,” or “usually —then analyzed the association of napping and first-time reports of stroke with an average follow-up of 11 years.

Results showed if napping frequency increased by one category, the risk of high blood pressure increased by 40 percent.

“This may be because, although taking a nap itself is not harmful, many people who take naps may do so because of poor sleep at night. Poor sleep at night is associated with poorer health, and naps are not enough to make up for that,” said Michael A. Grandner, a sleep expert and co-author of the American Heart Association’s new Life’s Essential 8 cardiovascular health score.

“This study echoes other findings that generally show that taking more naps seems to reflect increased risk for problems with heart health and other issues.”

“In addition, advances in ways to measure sleep, such as with wearable devices, now offer people the ability to reliably and routinely monitor their sleep habits at home.”

Aviation fuel scarcity is caused by greedy Nigerians smuggling the product abroad – Senate panel says

Senator Smart Adeyemi, a lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District and the Chairman of the Senate Aviation Committee has said that Aviation fuel scarcity in the country is caused by wealthy Nigerians smuggling the product to other West African countries.

Lamenting that Nigeria’s economy can’t grow when people keep stealing, Adeyemi stated that the aviation sector crisis in the country has been worsened by an increase in the number of Nigerians who no longer travel by road due to insecurity issues.

He said;

“Before now, we used to procure our oil from Europe but they no longer have that capacity, especially because of the diplomatic issue between Europe and Russia. Europe is no longer buying fuel from Russia, so they have to do with what they have.  As you can see, the pump price of PMS has gone up in Europe itself.

“The consequence for us is that what we would have used as proceeds is what we are using to import back PMS to the country for local consumption. The same thing goes for aviation; the JET A-1 that is being imported is beyond what our country is consuming. Nigerians are smuggling JET A-1 to other West African countries. So, it means neighbouring countries live on what Nigeria is bringing in and that accounts for why the subsidy keeps increasing.

“The people doing this bunker and stealing of our resources aren’t ordinary Nigerians. They are rich and powerful people who have become cabals; they do this stealing in very large quantities. How can anybody justify that 80 per cent of what we produce is stolen?”

Other issues Adeyemi listed is government’s inability to make refineries work and the devaluation of the naira which is making it difficult for airlines to get the Jet A-1.

He added;

“But what can we do when the refineries are not working. The concern of everyone is to make the refineries work and build one or two more refineries.

“When the refineries are not working, these are the consequences and more so with the global economic recession, the recession will first manifest in the aviation industry and that is because people are now traveling more by air than before.

“Also, our own inability to make refineries work and the devaluation of the naira are making it difficult for airlines to get the Jet A-1 and once it’s not available, then there is no way people can move. And it may continue for a while. And apart from the importation business, aviation is a major driver of the economy.

“Many people cannot go by road because of the security state of the nation. And as it is today, the airlines are finding it hard to procure servicing parts because of the cost. I think again, like I said, aviation is very important to the socio-economic development of any nation. Ours is more serious because it is crude, so until we get the refineries working, we cannot think of the other solutions to the aviation industry.”

The lawmaker concluded by saying that there’s rehabilitation work going on at the Port Harcourt Refinery and the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream, will be visiting the place next week to look at the refineries.

INEC: Voter’s registration ends this month/week

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the July 31 deadline for Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) won’t be extended.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for FCT, Alhaji Yahaya Bello who spoke at a news conference on the commission’s state of preparedness for the 2023 general elections, also revealed that those who register more than once would not get their Permanent Voter’s Card.

Bello said that all CVR activities except the collection of already printed PVCs would be suspended on Sunday, July 31.

According to him, the commission had increased the closing hours to 5pm daily including Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate the reawaking of those who now realised that they need their PVCs at the last hour of the programme that has been ongoing for over a year.

Bello said;

“The number of people who registered and whose registration has been invalidated is becoming alarming; a lot of people have registered in one or two registration centres.

“They will get nothing by doing so whatever their intentions were because, at the end of the day, they will be declared as people without PVC at all.

“Any double or triple registration is null and void. We will go through our machines after this exercise and clean our register so that we can come up with a list of people who genuinely are going to vote in 2023.

“So let me appeal to people that they should always tell our staff at registration centres exactly what they want to do, whether they have never registered before, they have lost their cards or it is defaced, or they want a transfer from one place to another.’’

Edo state confirms 8 Monkeypox cases

Eight persons have tested positive for Monkeypox in Edo state as confirmed by the state’s ministry of health.

Commissioner for Health in the state, Prof. Akoria Obehi told newsmen on Monday July 25 that the Ministry has ramped up surveillance and other activities to curb the spread of the infectious disease.

Obehi also urged residents to observe safety measures to reduce the spread of the virus and other infectious diseases in the state. The commissioner noted that symptoms of Monkeypox include fever, headache, weakness of the body, sore throat, and enlargement of glands under the jaw and in the neck.

She said;

“Amid the rise in the number of confirmed cases of Monkeypox in Edo, it has become imperative to warn on the health risks that the virus poses and reiterate the need for residents to be cautious and adhere to safety measures.

“It can also come with the appearance of a rash on the face, palms, soles of the feet, genitals, and other parts of the body, which can appear solid or fluid-filled at the onset and can manifest within a period of two to three weeks following infection, depending on the health status of the individual.

“The virus can be transmitted from infected animals and rodents such as rats, mice, squirrels, and even monkeys; through contact with infected blood, body fluids, spots, blisters or scabs, and sharing of objects.

“Avoid contact with dead or live wild animals such as small mammals including rodents (rats, squirrels) and non-human primates (monkeys, apes).

“Thoroughly cook all foods containing animal meat before eating; avoid unprotected contact with infected animals, humans, their beddings, and other linen; wash hands regularly, and use sanitizer when water is not available.”

Obehi also announced that in a bid to curb the outbreak and protect the health of residents, the State Disease Surveillance Team has been deployed to control the outbreak in the state.

Stakeholders across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state are also being engaged. She added;

“If you suspect any symptoms of Monkeypox, kindly visit the nearest health facility for medical attention or call the acting State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (0806 059 3802).”

“There’s no government in Nigeria” – Ortom says

Governor Samuel Ortom has raised an alarm over the widespread insecurity in the country.

Reacting to a viral video of bandits flogging Kaduna-bound train attack victims and their threat to kidnap the president and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Ortom said there’s no government in the country and that Nigerians are now exposed to the Afghanistan treatment.

Addressing journalists at the new banquet hall of the government house, Makurdi on Monday July 25, the Governor said;

“Things are getting worse in Nigeria. You know I said this before I travelled out that, very soon, with the manner bandits are operating without proactive steps from the federal government, they will soon enter the Aso Rock.

“You have seen happenings in the country; the Kuje prison break and the threat to kidnap the president, God forbid, but this is what I saw long time ago.

“Those people in Afghanistan, who are bandits and Fulanis, are the ones (wreaking havoc). They are being sponsored. I feel pains that this is happening in my generation. There is no government in Nigeria today. Those who are surrounding the president are criminals.

“Mr president, if you are listening to me, I want to say that you are not doing well, you have violated the oath of office you took, Nigerians are in pains,  they are suffering, the socio economic lives of the people have gone down the abyss.

“You have left us digging out graves, we need a true change, not the change from top to bottom you promised us in 2015.”

Commenting on his visit to the United Kingdom and United States of America, Ortom said he was there to correct federal government’s claim about attacks carried out by herdmen in Benue State.

The Benue Governor also said that he called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho who he described as “freedom fighters”.

He added;

“I decided to visit the United Kingdom and United States of America to correct the wrong narratives that the crisis in Benue State was caused by climate change and they were supprised to learn that the attacks were beyond what they had fed them with.

“Even during the raining season, the fulani herders come to our communities killed, maimed, raped our women even our men. These fulanis come from Niger, Senegal, Mauritania and other places.

“They only used that as shield their main reason for attacks was occupation of our lands.

“I also called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho who are freedom fighters while they give amnesty to bandits. I do this (call for release of freedom fighters) because if later I  become freedom fighter  for my people they should not disturb me”

Mass Resignation of Software Engineers Disrupts Banks Digitisation Move

The mass resignation of software engineers in most commercial banks across the country for greener’s pasture abroad, is currently threatening digitisation in the banking sector, LEADERSHIP can exclusively reveal.

This is coming as a disincentive to the cashless banking initiative, where every banking transaction is expected to be digitised. However, the development is obstructing seamless operation of electronic and mobile banking systems across banks.

It was learnt that about 500 software engineers have, since the beginning of this year, till now, secured better offers abroad, majorly in Canada and European countries where the emolument far outweighs what they are being paid in the Nigerian banking sector as they are paid in foreign currency at a time the nation’s Naira has seriously depreciated.

Aside these 500 engineers, about 1,000 other staff have so far  resigned their appointments in deposit money banks to pick up juicy offers abroad, even as there are indications that more  engineers and bank staff will also join them in the months ahead as the nation’s economy becomes harsher and operating environment becomes unbearable.

The development has disrupted the succession plan of many banks as more bank staff seek greener pastures outside the country.

This mass exodus, investigation shows, was responsible for hitches in electronic and mobile banking operations of most banks in the country as they struggle to find suitable replacements for those that have left their services.

Complaints from bank customers on electronic and mobile banking platforms have intensified in recent months, making it obvious, the challenges facing the banking system.

Over the last few months, thousands of Nigerians have moved out of the country either as students or have gotten jobs outside the country.

These have affected most industries across the economy but the banking industry is beginning to feel the brunt of it. The situation has gotten so bad that it came up as an issue for discussion at the Bankers’ Committee meeting which held in April this year.

For example, a major bank in the country, having noticed the trend of resignations, had earlier moved up its promotion process as a way to encourage the staff to remain. The bank had even increased its package for the workers and promoted 450 staff. Unfortunately, less than two weeks after the promotion, over 150 of those promoted resigned and left the country.

With no bank spared the exodus of talents, the bank chief executives had resorted to finding a solution to the brain drain by coming together to train more staff for their depleting human resource.

Managing director and chief executive of Sterling Bank, Abubakar Sulieman, at the end of the Bankers Committee meeting in April this year had noted that banks in the country will be collaborating with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) to increase training particularly in the software engineering area.

Sulieman affirming that the issue had come up at the Bankers Committee, said: “we extensively discussed the impact of the great resignation, where with so many of varied experience talent, especially in the areas of software engineering, either leaving the industry or leaving the country.”

Thus, he said, the banks had committed to using industry platform, the CIBN, to drive the process of training more skills in the areas where there has been evident deficit.

This, he said, is “in the hope that this would improve the availability of talent within the banking sector to drive innovation. This will be funded by the industry and will be part of our contribution towards talent development.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP at the weekend on this development, president of CIBN, Mr. Ken Opara noted that, the industry is currently suffering from talent drain.

According to him, “this year alone, there is a whole lot of resignations and people leaving the industry particularly the younger ones. The figure is quite high.

The CIBN President, Mr. Ken Opara had noted that the talent drain in the sector is “basically because they feel that they need an environment where they can guarantee their job security and have a flexible working environment and also the fact that you don’t need to always dress officially to do your job, you don’t need to wear suit or tie. Where you don’t necessarily need to be in the office to do your job and can work remotely. The concept of remote working is what appeals to them.

“The concept of flexible working hours where you can work in one place and in other places is also what appeals to them. The concept of having to dress casual is also part of what appeals to them.

Then of course the fact that they don’t need to be in a particular place for a long period of time as much as possible.”

For the Information and Communication sector, the story is not so different as a lot of tech developers are either leaving Nigeria in search for ICT job that pays better or working remotely, LEADERSHIP findings have revealed.

Recruiting in the tech industry is on the rise, with foreign companies reporting they are hiring “at or beyond pre-pandemic levels,” the Robert Half Technology’s 2022 IT salary report revealed.

The most in-demand tech jobs for 2022 are Information security analyst, security analysts, Software developer, Network and computer systems administrator, Computer programmer, web developer, Computer and information systems manager and system analyst, among others, said CIO.

The managing director and CEO, eStream Network, Martins Akingba, told LEADERSHIP Newspaper that brain drain is a major challenge in the ICT sector, as a lot of developers have migrated to other countries in search of greener pastures.

However, the CEO said majority of business owners have decided to go into automation. “We implement processes on systems that automate our operations, such that even when people go, it will not disrupt our business,” he explained.

Though, there is no statistic that revealed tech workers’ migration, the President of Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, told LEADERSHIP that there is a trend in recent times.

The reason for that is not far-fetched, Mba-Uzoukwu said, adding that, most institutions in Nigeria have not fully deployed local solutions to local problems. Majority of the IT-enabled organisations in the country still depend on foreign countries for solutions.

When asked if there are software developers to meet the needs of organisations in the country, Mba-Uzoukwu said: “Nigeria as a country is blessed with great software developers. We have programmers who have come up with several solutions to our local problems, but organizations sometimes don’t patronise them, as they prefer to import solutions or software from China and other countries.”

Banks’ Senior Staff Lament Redundancy

President and founder of Royal FM 95.1Mhz Ilorin, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo,  at the 5th Students Union leadership Summit of Kwara State University, said, it will be difficult to talk about a better Nigeria without considering the negative impact of mass migration of youthful population on the economy and its future.

Adebayo said migration may imposes high human capital cost for the country by leaving the country without the human capital necessary to achieve long-term economic growth.

He revealed that the migration problem is due to lack of employment and social guarantees on the young population and not due to any political persecution.

“The most negative impact on our country is the fact that young graduates (and our highly skilled professionals) leave the country for better opportunities. Today many of our engineers, IT specialists, doctors, nurses, engineers, and very brilliant professionals are lost to other countries,” he added.

Adebayo said, Nigeria has great potentials, adding that, “we are blessed with many natural resources, we are free of many natural disasters, a large proportion of our population are young people an age bracket that mist of you in this hall belong to, if you JAPA the country will rely on foreigners for needed skills in the future.

Russia slashes gas supplies to Europe again

Putin has cut gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream pipeline just days after restarting flows, marking an escalation of the continent’s energy crisis.

Gazprom will cut flows through the link to about 20pc of its capacity from 7am Moscow time on Wednesday.

Flows restarted through the pipeline last week at about 40pc of capacity following 10 days of planned maintenance work. They’ve been at roughly that level since Russia first cut supplies last month.

It follows a warning from the Kremlin that supplies could fall further if a spat over equipment isn’t resolved.

A turbine that was trapped in Canada due to sanctions has still not been returned, while Gazprom said another turbine is due for maintenance and will be taken out of service.

The move threatens to plunge Europe even further into an energy crisis and will fuel concerns about rationing and blackouts this winter.

Benchmark European gas prices rose as much as 10pc following the announcement

Chinese population to start shrinking by 2025

The world’s biggest nation is about to shrink.

China accounts for more than one-sixth of the world’s population, yet after four extraordinary decades in which the country’s population has swelled from 660 million to 1.4 billion, its population is on track to turn down this year, for the first time since the great famine of 1959-1961.

According to the latest figures from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, China’s population grew from 1.41212 billion to just 1.41260 billion in 2021 – a record low increase of just 480,000, a mere fraction of the annual growth of eight million or so common a decade ago.

Chinese state media has cited health officials claiming the country’s population growth has slowed so much that the total residents figures will start shrinking within three years.

New data released Sunday showed many provinces recording their lowest birth rates in decades, such as Henan which only saw 500,000 births last year.

A new law instigated in 2021 allowing women to have three children has failed to curb falling birthing rates.

However, her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu was denied bail.

Beatrice Ekweremadu, 55, together with Ike Ekweremadu, 60, allegedly trafficked the 21-year-old to London from the streets of Lagos in order to harvest his organ.

They were accused of plotting to traffic him to transplant his organs to their daughter who suffers from kidney failure.

JUST IN: UN Orders Nigerian Govt To Release and Compensate Nnamdi Kanu (video)

The United Nations, UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, has ordered the immediate and unconditional release of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The UN indicted Nigeria and Kenya Governments for the arrest and extraordinary rendition, torture, and continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu without due process.

The UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention also asked the Muhammadu Buhari-led government to pay him adequate compensation for the arbitrary violation of his fundamental human rights.

The group called for the investigation and punishment of government officials and security agents responsible for the torture of the pro-Biafra activist.

The UN directed Nigeria to report back within six months of the transmission of its opinions on Kanu’s matter, steps taken to comply with all the recommendations thereof.

The body also threatened to take further action to ensure the recommendations are complied with, noting that Nigeria and Kenya are signatories to the Convention and should comply.

The 16-page report dated July 20, 2022, was adopted on April 4 by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention at its 93rd session, held between March 30 – April 8, 2022.

The unedited version of the document sighted by Vanguard was marked: ”Opinion No. 25/2022 concerning Mr. Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Kenny Okwu-Kanu (Nigeria and Kenya).”

The UN Group said that Kanu was a victim of State persecution as Nigeria failed to provide convincing explanations with proof that he is guilty of treason and other criminal allegations levelled against him.

It said there was no evidence that International laws were observed in the arrest and rendition of Kanu from Kenya.

Noting the failure of the Government to explain what actions of Mr. Kanu amounted
to such criminal acts and how, and observing the lack of any evidence that any of his actions may in fact amount to such crimes, the Working Group concludes that Mr. Kanu is, in fact, being persecuted for the peaceful exercise of his rights, most notably his freedom of opinion and expression.

In the present case, the Government of Nigeria has presented no exceptions permitted under article 19 (3) of the Covenant, nor is there any evidence to suggest that Mr. Kanu’s exercise of his right to freedom of opinion and expression was anything but peaceful.

”In fact, the Government has chosen not to provide any explanation for the arrest, detention, and subsequent proceedings against Mr. Kanu. In these circumstances, the Working Group concludes that Mr. Kanu’s detention is thus arbitrary under category II,” UN Working Group said.

The 16-page dossier read in part: “In the present case, Mr. Kanu was not furnished with an arrest warrant by Nigerian authorities, nor was he promptly informed of the grounds for his arrest in Nigeria. Consequently, the Working Group finds that Mr. Kanu’s continued deprivation of liberty
violates his rights under articles 3 and 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article
9 of the Covenant, and principles 2, 4, and 10 of the Body of Principles and constitutes
arbitrary detention under category I.”

“Turning to the uncontested allegations that following his rendition to Nigeria, Mr. Kanu remained in pre-trial detention with his trial having been scheduled to commence
in January 2022, the Working Group recalls that it is a well-established norm of international law that pre-trial detention should be the exception rather than the rule, and should be ordered for the shortest time possible. Put differently, liberty is recognized under article 9 (3) of the Covenant as the core consideration, with detention merely as an exception.

“Therefore, detention pending trial must be based on an individualized determination that it is reasonable and necessary for such purposes as to prevent flight, interference with evidence, or the recurrence of crime. Such determination was not carried out in the present case, in violation of Mr. Kanu’s rights under article 9 (3) of the Covenant.

“Further, in accordance with Article 9 (3) of the Covenant, an arrested person is to be
brought before a judge within 48 hours.27 This was not satisfied in the case of Mr. Kanu and
the Working Group, therefore, finds a violation of articles 3 and 9 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, Article 9 (3) of the Covenant, and principles 11, 37, and 38 of the Body of
Principles.

“Furthermore, in order to establish that detention is indeed legal, anyone detained has
the right to challenge the legality of his or her detention before a court, as guaranteed by
Article 9 (4) of the Covenant. The Working Group wishes to recall that according to the UN Basic Principles and Guidelines on Remedies and Procedures on the Rights of Anyone Deprived of their Liberty to Bring Proceedings before a Court, the right to challenge the lawfulness of detention before a court is a self-standing human right, which is essential to preserve legality in a democratic society.

“This right, which is in fact a peremptory norm of international law, applies to all forms of deprivation of liberty, 29 to “all situations of
deprivation of liberty, including not only to detention for purposes of criminal proceedings but also to situations of detention under administrative and other fields of law, including military detention, security detention, detention under counter-terrorism measures”.

“Moreover, it also applies “irrespective of the place of detention or the legal terminology used in the legislation. Any form of deprivation of liberty on any ground must be subject to
effective oversight and control by the judiciary. This was also denied to Mr. Kanu, thus, violating his right under Article 9 (4) of the Covenant.

“Finally, turning to Mr. Kanu’s pre-trial detention in Nigeria, the Working Group recalls that according to international human rights law, in particular, Article 9 (3) of the Covenant, any person detained while awaiting trial is entitled to trial within a reasonable
time, or otherwise shall be released. Article 14 (3) (c) of the Covenant also guarantees the
right of anyone charged with a criminal offense to be tried without undue delay. In the
absence of a substantive response from the Government of Nigeria, the Working Group finds no legitimate grounds for the delays in the trials against Mr. Kanu.

“Consequently, the Working Group finds that the Government of Nigeria failed to
establish a legal basis for the detention of Mr. Kanu. His detention is thus arbitrary under
category I.”

The UN Working Group said that both the Nigerian and Kenyan Governments should take responsibility for Kanu’s rights violations.

“The Working Group wishes once again to underscore the collusion between the
Governments of Kenya and Nigeria, in the rendition of Mr. Kanu, reiterate that both
Governments bear joint responsibility for any violations of Mr. Kanu’s rights in Kenya and
Nigeria.

“The Working Group has already established in its discussion of the detention of Mr. Kanu in Kenya that he was arrested and detained due to the peaceful exercise of his rights (see paras 52-54 above). The Working Group notes that the source has argued the same in relation to Mr. Kanu’s arrest, detention, and trial proceedings in Nigeria. Notably, the Government of Nigeria has chosen not to address the substance of these allegations.

“The Working Group notes that it is not contested that Mr. Kanu is accused of the crime of conspiracy to commit a treasonable felony through an agreement with others to be broadcast from London, in view of the establishment of a Biafran sovereignty. The source notes that, while treason consists of “levying war” against Nigeria under Nigerian law, the Federal Government of Nigeria does not allege any action implicating Mr. Kanu in the contemplation, planning, or incitement of war against Nigeria. The source argues that
Mr. Kanu was, in fact advocating for a peaceful referendum for the establishment of a Biafran
sovereignty, in conformity with international and other relevant laws.

“The Working Group recalls that freedom of opinion and expression, as expressed in article 19 of the Covenant, is an indispensable condition for the full development of the person. It is essential for any society and constitutes the foundation stone for every free and democratic society. It also recalls that freedom of expression includes the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, and that this right includes the expression and receipt of communications of every form of idea and opinion capable of transmission to others, including political opinions.

“Similarly, in Resolution 12/16, the Human Rights Council called on States to refrain from imposing restrictions which are not consistent with article 19 (3), including on the discussion of government policies and political debate; reporting on human rights; engaging in peaceful demonstrations or political activities, including for peace or democracy; and expression of opinion and dissent, religion or belief.”

The UN Working Group further said that the Nigeria Government could not disprove claims by Kanu that he was denied adequate legal representation, including access to his US lawyer.

“The source has submitted, and the Government did not address, that Mr. Kanu was denied effective legal representation. The Working Group considers legal representation as being a core facet of the right to a fair trial. Legal assistance should be available at all stages of criminal proceedings, namely, pre-trial, trial, and appellate stages, to ensure compliance with fair trial guarantees. Any denial of access to lawyers substantially undermines and compromises an accused individual’s capacity to defend him or herself in any judicial proceedings.

“As the Working Group has stated in principle nine and guideline 8 of its Basic Principles,
persons deprived of their liberty have the right to legal assistance by counsel of their choice,
at any time during their detention, including immediately after the moment of apprehension, and must be promptly informed of this right upon apprehension. Access to legal counsel should not be unlawfully or unreasonably restricted.

“Article 14 (3) (b) of the Covenant entitles defendants to adequate time and facilities
for the preparation of their defence and to communicate with counsel of their own choosing. Defendants must have access to documents and other evidence, including “all materials that the prosecution plans to offer in court against the accused or that could assist the defence.

“Recalling general comment No. 32, a detainee has the right to have “prompt access” to legal counsel, meaning that a lawyer must be able to have private communications and meetings with the detainee and be able to attend all the investigations without interference or restrictions. A detainee also ought to have access to “effective counsel.”

“All of this was denied to Mr. Kanu. In the Working Group’s view, by failing to allow
Mr. Kanu to be represented by lawyers of his choice, including an international counsel,
the Government denied Mr. Kanu’s right to legal assistance at all times, which is inherent in the right to liberty and security of the person, as well as the right to a fair and public hearing
by a competent, independent, and impartial tribunal established by law, in accordance with articles 3, 9, 10, and 11 (1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 14 of the
Covenant, articles 37 (b) and (d) and 40 (2) (b) (ii) and principles 15, 17, and 18 of the Body
of Principles and principles 1, 5, 7, 8, 21, and 22 of the Basic Principles on the Role of
Lawyers.

“The Working Group is also disturbed by the source’s report of the treatment of
Mr. Kanus’s lawyers recalls its jurisprudence highlighting that such treatment of lawyers is entirely unacceptable and violates articles 10 and 11 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as article 14 (3) (b) of the Covenant.41 It is the legal and positive duty of the State to protect everyone on its territory or under its jurisdiction against any human rights violation and to provide remedy whenever a violation still occurs.

“The Working Group also considers that Mr. Kanu’s presumption of innocence was
violated as the Department surrounded the court complex with an array of armed forces,
creating an atmosphere of intimidation and danger (see para. 9), a submission which the
Government has chosen not to contest. The Working Group recalls that defendants should
not be presented to the court in a manner indicating that they may be dangerous criminals, as this also undermines the presumption of innocence. The Working Group finds a breach of Article 14 (2) of the Covenant.

“Further, according to the source and uncontested by the Government, following his
rendition to Nigeria, Mr. Kanu was detained in solitary confinement within the headquarters
of the Department in Abuja, Nigeria. He is reportedly currently still held in a very small cell where he is exposed to daily psychological and mental torture without access to other inmates or any other person except for the Department officers. Mr. Kanu is also allegedly denied access to reading or writing materials and has been refused access to professional medical care despite a serious heart ailment.

“The source reports that Mr. Kanu’s life is in jeopardy and that he suffers from a medical condition occasioned by gradual depletion of potassium in his system, which has defied any medical solution given to him within the Department facilities.

“The Working Group is seriously concerned about the treatment to which Mr. Kanu has been subjected. Especially noting its finding that Mr. Kanu was subjected to extraordinary rendition as well as his treatment prior to that, the Working Group considers it unlikely that Mr. Kanu would have been able to effectively assist with and participate in his own defence during the proceedings against him, and that such treatment proceedings against him, rendering them inherently unfair and unjust, in violation of article 14 of the Covenant. For all the reasons above, the Working Group finds that the fair trial rights and procedural guarantees of Mr. Kanu under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Covenant, and other relevant human rights standards were not observed and that such violations are of such gravity as to render Mr. Kanu’s detention arbitrary under category III.”

“Mr. Kanu is an activist and the leader of the organization Indigenous People of Biafra,
which he founded in 2012. The source alleges that the Government of Nigeria is targeting
Mr. Kanu, due to his political expression, in particular, due to his membership in a group
politically opposed to the Nigerian Government on the question of Biafra, his widely published criticism of the Government, and his work with and advocacy for the Indigenous People of Biafra. The Government has chosen not to address these allegations.

“The Working Group finds that Mr. Kanu has indeed been targeted by the Government
as a human rights defender on account of his freedom of opinion and expression as well as
his position regarding the sovereignty of Biafra. As Mr. Kanu has been targeted on account of his activism in galvanizing momentum for a referendum on the sovereignty of Biafra, the Working Group considers that his detention violates articles 2 and 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and articles 2 (1) and 26 of the Covenant, and is arbitrary under category V.

Concluding remarks: “The Working Group wishes to record its very serious concern for the well-being of Mr. Kanu, who, according to the source and uncontested by the Government of Nigeria,
remains in solitary confinement since his arbitrary detention in Nigeria on 29 June 2021. He has been denied medical treatment and medication for his heart condition. The Working Group recalls that prolonged solitary confinement in excess of 15 consecutive days is prohibited under rules 43(1)(b) and 44 of the Mandela Rules.

“The Working Group is also obliged to remind the Government of Nigeria that in accordance with article 10 of the Covenant, all persons deprived of their liberty must be treated with humanity and with respect to the inherent dignity of the human person and that denial of medical assistance constitutes a violation of the Nelson Mandela Rules, rules 24, 25, 27 and 30 in particular.

”According to the source, throughout Mr. Kanu’s detention in Kenya and transfer to Nigeria, no family members knew about his location or could access him, and Mr. Kanu was not permitted to contact his family during this detention. These allegations have not been contested by either Governments. The Working Group stresses that, under international human rights law, all detained and imprisoned individuals have the right to communicate and be visited by their families.

“The right to receive visits applies to all detainees, “regardless of the offence of which they are suspected or accused.” Under Principle 19 of the Body of Principles, this right could be subject only to conditions and restrictions that are appropriate to a legitimate aim. Neither Government have argued that the restrictions placed on Mr. Kanu’s contact with his family conformed with this requirement. As a result, the Working Group finds that the restrictions placed on Mr. Kanu’s contact with his family violated his right to contact with the outside world under rules 43 (3) and 58 (1) of the Nelson Mandela Rules and principles 15 and 19 of the Body of Principles.

“Noting the treatment to which Mr. Kanu has been subjected at the hands of both Kenyan and Nigerian authorities as well as his continued solitary confinement, the Working
Group refers this case to the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment for further consideration.

“The Working Group also wishes to reemphasize its very serious concern over the apparent collusion between the Governments of Kenya and Nigeria in this case and reiterates its findings that both Governments are jointly responsible for the violations of Mr. Kanu’s rights in both jurisdictions. The present Opinion concerns solely the treatment and rights of Mr. Kanu and is position

“In the light of the foregoing, the Working Group renders the following opinion: In relation to Kenya and Nigeria.

“The deprivation of liberty of Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Kenny Okwu-Kanu, being in
contravention of articles 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 19 of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights and articles 2, 9, 13, 14, 16, 19, and 26 of the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights is arbitrary and falls within Categories I, II, III, and V.

“The Working Group requests the Governments of Kenya and Nigeria to take the steps necessary to remedy the situation of Mr. Kanu without delay and bring it into conformity with the relevant international norms, including those set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

” The Working Group considers that taking into account all the circumstances of the case, the appropriate remedy would be for the Government of Nigeria to release Mr. Kanu
immediately and for both Governments to accord him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law.

”In the current context of the global coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and the threat that it poses in places of detention, the Working Group calls upon the Government of Nigeria to take urgent action to ensure the immediate, unconditional release of Mr. Kanu.

” The Working Group urges the two Governments to ensure a full and independent investigation of the circumstances surrounding the arbitrary deprivation of liberty of Mr. Kanu and to take appropriate measures against those responsible for the violation of his rights.

”In accordance with paragraph 33 (a) of its methods of work, the Working Group refers
the present case to the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment for appropriate action.

“The Working Group requests the Governments to disseminate the present opinion through all available means and as widely as possible.

Follow-up procedure:

“In accordance with paragraph 20 of its methods of work, the Working Group requests
the source and the Governments to provide it with information on action taken in follow-up
to the recommendations made in the present opinion, including (a) Whether Mr. Kanu has been released and, if so, on what date;
(b) Whether compensation or other reparations have been made to Mr. Kanu;
(c) Whether an investigation has been conducted into the violation of Mr. Kanu
rights and, if so, the outcome of the investigation; (d) Whether any legislative amendments or changes in practice have been made to harmonize the laws and practices of Kenya and Nigeria with its international obligations in line with the present opinion; (e) Whether any other action has been taken to implement the present opinion.

“The Government is invited to inform the Working Group of any difficulties it may have encountered in implementing the recommendations made in the present opinion and whether further technical assistance is required, for example, through a visit by the Working Group.

“The Working Group requests the source and the Government to provide the above mentioned information within six months of the date of transmission of the present opinion.

“However, the Working Group reserves the right to take its own action in follow-up to the
opinion if new concerns in relation to the case are brought to its attention. Such action would enable the Working Group to inform the Human Rights Council of progress made in implementing its recommendations, as well as any failure to take action.

”The Working Group recalls that the Human Rights Council has encouraged all States
to cooperate with the Working Group and has requested them to take account of its views
and, where necessary, to take appropriate steps to remedy the situation of persons arbitrarily deprived of their liberty, and to inform the Working Group of the steps they have taken.”

Senator Ekweremadu’s Doctor in the UK, charged for plotting in the kidney harvesting

A Nigerian doctor named Obinna Obeta, residing in the UK has been accused of plotting with former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, to traffic a homeless man into the UK to harvest a kidney for their daughter.

Obeta, 50, appeared before the Bexley Magistrate court on Thursday, July 13, and was charged under the Modern Slavery Act with arranging the travel of a 21-year-old man with a view to him being exploited between August last year and this May.

A second charge alleges he conspired with the former Senate President to arrange or facilitate the travel of the man with a view to him being exploited, namely organ harvesting.

LIB had earlier reported that the Ekweremadus are being tried in the UK on charges of organ harvesting after a 21-year-old man, David Ukpo, they brought to the UK approached the police with claims of being treated as a slave and also claiming that he was ”15” years old. The Nigerian politician and his wife were arrested in the UK on June 21 after flying into Heathrow from Turkey.

It was later discovered that David lied about his age as the biodata on his Nigerian bank accounts and the National Identity Management Commission NIMC indicated he was 21 years old.

Obeta was on Thursday charged with arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation and conspiring together with Ike Ekweremadu.

Prosecutor Tim Probert-Wood had previously told the court that the case involved ‘exploitation and the harvesting of an organ.’ The Prosecuting counsel told the court that the Ekweremadus had planned to have David’s kidney removed so it could be given to their daughter.

”The case began on 5 May 2022 when the complainant presented himself at Staines Police Station and claimed he had been transported to this country for the purpose of his kidney being removed.

He arrived on 20th February 2022 and was taken to Royal Free Hospital where tests were conducted. For the purpose he was there he did not consent to the taking of his kidney.

He returned to the house he was staying and his treatment changed dramatically. He described being treated effectively as a slave.” Probert-Wood said

However, counsel to Mr. Ekweremadu, Martin Hicks, QC, insisted that the former Senate President and his wife did no wrong

‘We deny that there was any exploitation or any intent to do so. The argument will be factual denial.’

All three defendants, who are in custody, are due to appear at the Old Bailey on August 4.

Pastor Paul Enenche calls for arrest and trial of fake Bishops

The Senior Pastor of the Dunamis International Gospel Center, Paul Enenche has called for the immediate arrest of ‘fake bishops’ who attended the unveiling of Kashim Shettima as APC Vice Presidential candidate on Wednesday July 20.

Recall that the footage of some unpopular bishops who were sighted at the unveiling event had emerged online with heavy criticism from a cross-section of Nigerians. The bishops were alleged to have been hired to calm the controversy surrounding the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the ruling party.

Reacting to this development, Pastor Enenche, in a video on his verified Facebook page, slammed APC for being desperate to retain power in 2023. He said the ‘bishops’ should be arrested and charged to court for impersonating the Christian body.

”There is a contest going on in this country right now where some criminals paraded themselves as bishops.

That is the level at which the criminal leadership of this country has descended into. Those who send them are like them. That is an impersonation of the highest order and they should be arrested and tried.

That is how ‘yeyecious’ bankrupt of mentality, capacity and leadership ability these people who want to rule Nigeria are. But their end has come. They will never see the light of day.

They will never smell the palace of authority. You want to cheat to lead, you want to lie to lead, you want to kill to lead and your platform has led for 8 years and the only thing the country got was bloodshed, killings, banditry and you are still pushing yourself forward. Bankrupt of mentality.” he said

It has been reported that Jorge Mendes wants to engineer a move to Atletico Madrid for the Portugal international.

Ronaldo posted a picture of himself in the gym in Lisbon yesterday while United were playing in Perth for their pre season.

According to Mail Online, Ronaldo has shown a willingness to take a pay cut from his basic £360,000-a-week salary, but Atletico would need to sell players first.

Antoine Griezmann and Juventus target Alvaro Morata are two players that could be off-loaded.
