Lord’s Chosen Pastor allegedly impregnated two underaged sisters

A minister in the Lord’s Chosen Church has been accused of raping two underaged sisters for years and finally impregnating them under the guise of casting out badluck from them.

Pastor Nduka Anyanwu, who ministers in the Lord’s Chosen Church, Canaan Land branch in Oshodi, allegedly impregnated the sisters aged 17 and 13.

According to an NGO known as Stop The Abuse, Nduka allegedlyvbegan raping the younger girl when she was just 9 and began raping the older girl when she was 16. They also alleged that the parents of the girls knew but allowed the pastor to carry on because he told them it’s the only way he could remove the “spiritual mark” on them that “repels good things”.

When he was eventually nabbed by a team of advocates from Stop The Abuse Foundation, the parents of the girls allegedly tried to defend him. The parents refused his arrest based on the fact that he’s a man of God and he has already promised to marry their older daughter.

According to the NGO, the pastor said that he wants the older sister to keep the pregnancy and he’ll marry her but asked that the younger sister aborts her pregnancy because what happened between them was a mistake.

Police officers at the Makinde Police Station arrested the pastor and he’s now in their custody.

Pastor Nduka Anyanwu who should be better known as Pastor Penis has allegedly raped  and impregnated two sisters aged 17 and 13 years and has said he wants the older girl to keep the pregnancy because he wants to marry her but that the younger one should abort her own pregnancy as sexually defiling her was a mistake which he regretted even though he has had carnal knowledge of her uncountable times.

The wicked pastor who claims he is a minister from the Lord’s Chosen Church , Canaan land branch, Oshodi  has been sexually defiling the younger girl since she was 9 years old and the older girl since she was 16 years under the pretext that she had a spiritual mark on her body that repels good things and the only way to remove the mark was to have carnal knowledge of her. She refused vehemently and reported to her parents who insisted that she must accept. 

Drama however ensued when a team of advocates from Stop The Abuse Foundation and Child Advocates and Vulnerable Person’s Network tried to get him arrested with the help of policemen from Makinde Police Station,Oshodi. The parents of the survivors adamantly refused the arrest of the abuser because he is a man of God and has already promised to marry their older daughter. ‘She became a thorn in the flesh after she moved into my house with her 5 children’

“I insist that she is not my wife. We were just co-habiting. She moved into my house with her five children and made my life miserable.

“She is full of vices. Glory, apart from lying, is dubious. She stole documents of my landed property and refused to return them.”

“He refused to carry out the necessary marriage rites on my behalf. He is diabolic. He would hold a horn and curse me every time we fought. He always threatened that I would share the same fate with his other wives who all died suddenly and prematurely.”

A man, William Edin, had dragged his wife, Glory Edin, before Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking that it brought to an end the six-year-old relationship between him and his wife.

William who initially refused to acknowledge that Glory was his wife told the court that he carried out no marital rite on her and that they never had children together.

According to him, the six years he lived with Glory was filled with distress and regret because she was not a straight person.

The plaintiff told the court that his wife was irresponsible and that she stopped cooking for him more than a year ago. He added that she was a liar and that he stole the documents of the land he bought from her friend’s husband.

William further stated that he moved out of their apartment because Glory made his life miserable.

He thus pleaded with the court to stop their relationship and rule that Glory return his document to him and move out of his apartment.

Glory gave her consent to divorce stating that she already had enough of William’s atrocities.

The defendant explained that the plaintiff insisted that she left her trade and forced her to sell alcoholic drinks.

Glory added that William refused to carry out the expected marriage rites on her behalf adding that they never planned to have children in their marriage.

She also stated that he employed a prostitute who humiliated her twice by slapping her.

The defendant further said that the plaintiff was always using a horn to curse her any time there was a misunderstanding between them.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade observed that there was no more love between them.

Ruling, he dissolved their marriage and admonished both to maintain peace.

He ordered the defendant to move out of the plaintiff’s house while the plaintiff should give her N3,000 to pack her belongings.

The plaintiff was further mandated to give the defendant N12, 000 as one year rent for a new apartment.

“My lord, I’m stating clearly before this court that this woman whom I dragged to court is not my wife. We are not married but just co-habiting.

“I never carried out any marriage rite on her behalf. She moved into my apartment with the five children she had for her late husband and turned my life upside down.

“She became a thorn in my flesh and wanted to send me to my early grave.

“I discovered after we started living together that she was a liar. Glory found it convenient lying and she never showed any sign of remorse even when caught.

“She was also stubborn and never took to correction. She not only fought me, but extended her hostility to members of my family our even our neighbours.

“I established her in different businesses but all went bankrupt. I felt bad seeing my hard earned money go down the drain but she was unperturbed.

“I invited her to join me in my business but she made a mess of it. Glory is dubious. She cheated me of the proceeds from our business.

“She took my N100, 000 without my consent and has not returned it till date,” William stated.

He added that “Glory was always collecting food allowance from me but she refused to cook.

“My lord, Glory and I lived like cat and mouse for the years we were together.

“She stole the documents of my landed property but denied it was with her.

“I got frustrated and moved out of our apartment and we have been living separately since then.

“I have gone through hell living with Glory. I, therefore, pray this court to stop our relationship and order her to move out of my apartment.

“I also entreat the court to help retrieve my documents from her, “the defendant said.

“William is a liar and all liars will end in the lake of fire, “Glory stated.

“William promised me heaven and earth when we met. He told me he would help me take care of my five children but he reneged on his promise.

“I was doing well as a hair dresser when we met and had seven apprentices. He insisted I abandon this trade and go into trade I wasn’t familiar with nor comfortable with. He told me to start selling beer.

“He employed a prostitute who was very rude and always fighting me. She slapped me on two different occasions and my husband did nothing about it.

“The relationship between my husband and I stated turning sour as a result of this.

“I told him I was no longer interested in the beer business but he refused that I carry my stock out of the warehouse.

“My lord, we never agreed on having children so he can’t accuse me of not having children for him.

“My husband always threatened that I would share the same fate with his other wives who died prematurely.

“William is diabolic. He would bring out a horn and curse me anytime we had a disagreement.

“He moved to his other flat when we fought and refused to move back. He stopped giving me feeding allowance and insisted I move out of his apartment.

“My lord, I have told him he’s joking. No one, not even this court can throw me out of that apartment.

“William is just trying to play smart. Our differences can only be resolved by our family members and this will be in our village,” she concluded.

Elumelu Demands Apology over Alleged N41bn Fraud

Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr. Tony Elumelu, has given a seven-day ultimatum to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public petition, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, to retract a statement credited to him linking the banker and the UBA to a N41billion fraud allegation.

Two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), Mr. Lawal Rabana and Ms. Oluwakemi Balogun, who are lawyers to Elumelu, in a letter to the senator threatened to sue the lawmaker if he fails to retract the statement and publicly apologise to Elumelu within seven days over his fraud allegation.

“We have our client’s further instruction to take all appropriate legal actions against Senator Akinyelure and his media agents if our above-stated demand is not met within seven days of their receipt of our demand letter,” Elumelu’s lawyers said.

The lawyers added that they were appalled by the deliberate peddling of falsehood and misinformation against an unblemished personal and business reputation, painstakingly built over several decades with great personal sacrifice and unquestionable integrity.

According to the lawyers, “It is important to emphasise that when UBA appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, attention was drawn to the fact that the facts and circumstances leading to the disputes on the alleged financial indebtedness was pending before the Supreme Court in SC/CV/112/2020. It was resolved that given the pendency of the matter at the Supreme Court, it was subjudice and all actions on the matter be suspended.

“It is shocking and sacrilegious that a matter pending at the apex court could be subjected to debate contrary to the Rules of the Senate and by extension, the principle of law that when a matter is subjudice, it should not be subjected to debate before a decision is reached by the court. “The publication ascribed to Senator Ayo Akinyelure is in total disregard of the Rules of Senate and the rule of law.”

The lawyers, therefore, demanded an immediate open, public and unreserved retraction of the statements credited to Akinyelure as well as an apology from him for “this false allegation and defamation” of their client.
Akinyelure was reported to have claimed that Elumelu, who is also the Chairman of Tony Elumelu Foundation and the Heirs Holding Group, was indicted in a N41 billion naira fraud when he was the managing director of the bank.

Acting on a petition by counsel to NITEL, J.U Ayogu and Co, the Senate Committee had summoned the Group Managing Director ( GMD) and Chief Executive Officer, CEO of UBA, Kennedy Uzoka, to appear before the committee tomorrow.

Cat detained for smuggling drugs and SIM cards escapes

 A cat detained at Sri Lanka’s main prison for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and cell phone SIM cards, has escaped from custody. 

The smuggling attempt was busted by the jail intelligence officials on Saturday August 1, at the high-security Welikada Prison. A police official said nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip were found in a small plastic bag tied around the cat’s neck.

Aruna newspaper however reported that the cat escaped on Sunday August 2, from a prison room where it was kept.

While there is no immediate comment from the prison authorities, it was however gathered that the management of the correctional facility had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in recent weeks.

Police last week seized an eagle allegedly used by drug traffickers to distribute narcotics in a suburb of Colombo.

Investigations are proceeding to determine if the cat had been used previously to smuggle drugs and contraband.

Shoprite’s shares appreciate amid plans to sell Nigerian subsidiary

South Africa’s Shoprite Holdings recorded an 11 per cent rise in its shares on Monday amid plans to sell a majority stake in its Nigerian subsidiary.

Although the company reported higher total sales, it also announced that it was considering the sale of all or a majority stake in its subsidiary in Nigeria.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the company made the proposed sale announcement on Monday in its operational and voluntary trading update for the year ended on June 28, 2020.

The multi-national retail group, which announced a 6.4 per cent increase (R156.9billion) in total sales of merchandise for the outgoing year despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that it took the decision to discontinue its Nigeria operation “following approaches from various potential investors, and in line with our re-evaluation of the group’s operating model in Nigeria.

“The Board has decided to initiate a formal process to consider the potential sale of all, or a majority stake, in Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Shoprite International Limited. As such, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited may be classified as a discontinued operation when Shoprite reports its results for the year. Any further updates will be provided to the market at the appropriate time,” the report stated.

In recent years, Africa’s top supermarket has been reviewing its long-term options in Africa as currency devaluation, supply issues and low consumer spending have affected operations in some countries, including Nigeria.

In the 52 weeks up till June 28, it reported that its total sales rose 6.4 per cent to 156.9 billion rand, adding that its full-year headline earnings per share (HEPS) could rise despite the impact of coronavirus pandemic on sales and purchasing power of consumers.

Reports say the group plans to publish its 2020-year end results on September 8.

Shoprite opened its first store in Nigeria in December 2005 and now has a total of 26 stores across eight states in the country including Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The company also claims to have employed more than 2,000 people in Nigeria, of which 99 per cent of them are Nigerians.

Shoprite also claimed to have built more relationships with over 300 Nigeria suppliers, small businesses, and farmers.

One dies as gas explodes again in Lagos (photo)

A 35-year-old man, Ajibola Olaoye, has been confirmed dead in a gas explosion that took place at Alafia bus stop beside Atlas, in Orile Iganmu, Lagos state on Monday, August 3.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, said four other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

“Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that there was an explosion from a gas cylinder used in welding a truck flatbed with an unknown registration number. The explosion was a result of gas leakage from the cylinder.

However, an adult male (Ajibola Olaoye, 35yrs) lost his life at the scene of the incident and four adult males sustained injuries and had been rushed to the hospital before the arrival of emergency responders.

The dead victim was bagged by the LRT and handed over to his family in the presence of Officers of the Nigerian Police Force from Amukoko Division.”Okunbor said

This incident comes less than a week after two persons died in a gas explosion in Ajao estate in Lagos.

Serial Fraudster Bags 53 Years For N17.1m Fraud

Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday July 29, 2020 sentenced a serial fraudster, Aliyu Zakari to 53 years imprisonment for N17.1million fraud.

The convict was prosecuted by the Lagos zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on six-count charges of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing, to which he pleaded not guity.

One of the charges read: “That you, Aliyu Zakari, on or about the 18th day of July , 2014, in Lagos, within the Lagos judicial division, with intent to defraud, induced Mrs. Obiezuono Adaeze of Maglo Tech Inter Limited to confer a benefit of 1, 762 bags, valued at N17,136, 450.00 (Seventeen Million, One Hundred and Thirty-six Thousand, Four Hundred and Fifty Naira only ) on you under the false pretence that the bags were meant for Kano State Government and that same would be paid for by the Kano State Government, which pretence you knew to be false.”

Prosecution counsel, Franklin Ofoma in the course of the trial, invited witnesses and tendered documents that were admitted in evidence by the court, while the defendant testified for himself and had just one witness. Related Posts

Justice Solebo in his judgment convicted the defendant and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment on counts one to five and three years on count six.

Zakari’s journey to prison began after he fraudulently took delivery of some bags worth N17, 136, 450.00 from his victim, Obiezuono Adaeze of Maglo Tech Inter Limited.

During their meeting sometime in 2014, Zakari, who was being investigated for offences bordering on issuance of dud cheques, told Adaeze, who was also at the Lagos detention facility of the Commission, that the Kano State Government needed a large supply of trolley bags, shoulder bags, pilot bags and pilot cases, valued at N17,136, 450 .

Upon her release from the Commission’s holding facility, the victim supplied all the items to Zakari, who did not deliver them to the Kano State Government, but converted them to his own.

IOM: 109 trafficked Nigerian girls returned through Mali

Some 109 trafficked Nigerian girls have been evacuated back to the country through Mali, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has disclosed.

IOM disclosed this in a statement published on its website on Wednesday titled “Homecoming: 109 Stranded Nigerians Return from Mali Via Humanitarian Corridor“.

According to the humanitarian organisation, on 28 July, 109 Nigerian migrants returned safely from Mali on a long-awaited charter flight organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with the support of the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the European Union (EU) through its Regional Direct Assistance Fund.

The flight—the first of its kind in Nigeria since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic—is the result of sustained negotiations between the governments of Mali and Nigeria to establish a humanitarian corridor, a mechanism that has allowed over 2,200 stranded migrants return safely and voluntarily throughout West Africa amid border closures.

“Humanitarian corridors are a much-needed alternative for thousands of stranded migrants who would otherwise remain in their countries of transit or destination with limited access to basic services,” said Saskia Kok, IOM Programme Manager, Migrant Protection and Assistance, in Nigeria.

“Our duty now is to provide these returnees with all the necessary support to ensure their successful reintegration back home,” added Kok.

Before the pandemic, Nigerians stranded in Mali had been able to return within 30 days.

In recent months, however, their wait has been prolonged owing to the border closures announced by governments to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Prior to departure, the returnees—including 12 pregnant women and new mothers tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 and received hygiene kits containing face masks and other protective gear.

“The months of waiting have been difficult for these young Nigerians who were eagerly waiting to be reunited with their families.

“We have done our utmost to ensure that they were accommodated in the best possible conditions in our centers as they awaited the return to their home country,” said Pascal Reyntjens, IOM Chief of Mission in Mali.

Upon arrival, they will undergo a 14-day quarantine period and will subsequently receive financial support and transportation to their communities of origin.

IOM will provide mental health and psychosocial support and training to help them kickstart income-generating activities as part of their reintegration assistance.

Amid ongoing movement restrictions in Nigeria, the pandemic has put a strain on the livelihoods of returnees and their communities.

A recent assessment by IOM revealed that 96 per cent of 105 Nigerian returnees consulted in Edo and Delta states were worse-off financially compared to before the start of the pandemic. Related Posts

The statement continues: “In addition to lower income, beneficiaries’ purchasing power has also taken a hit.

“Three-quarters of Nigerian respondents reported that food and basic items had become more expensive than previously.

“Between April and July 2020, 839 returnees across various projects have received reintegration counseling including socio-economic assistance from IOM in Nigeria.

“Since 2017, 629 Nigerians, mostly women between the ages of 18 and 25, have returned voluntarily from Mali with support from DFID and the EU through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration.”

IOM continues to provide support to the Nigerian COVID-19 Presidential Task Force for the opening of humanitarian corridors to safely and voluntarily bring back migrants stranded abroad.

Microsoft to buy TikTok after Trump announced he’ll ban the company from operating in US

Tech giants, Microsoft have announced that they’ll be buying social media app, TikTok after US President Donald Trump announced that he’ll be banning the app from the United States over fears that the Chinese government uses it to spy on Americans. 

In a blog post, Microsoft (MSFT) said its CEO Satya Nadella has talked with Trump about buying the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance after US policymakers have  expressed concerns about the app’s ability to invade users privacy.

“[Microsoft] is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury,” the company said, adding that it will “move quickly” to talk with ByteDance “in a matter of weeks.”

“During this process, Microsoft looks forward to continuing dialogue with the United States Government, including with the President,” the company added.

“This new structure would build on the experience TikTok users currently love, while adding world-class security, privacy, and digital safety protections,” Microsoft said. “The operating model for the service would be built to ensure transparency to users as well as appropriate security oversight by governments in these countries.”

If Microsoft does buy TikTok it could avert the ban that Trump threatened on Friday July 31. In Trump’s threat, he said that he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order to block the app from operating in the United States. 

If the deal goes through, and Microsoft buys majority shares of the Tiktok’s parent company ByteDance, Microsoft would own and operate TikTok services in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and also ensure that all private data of TikTok’s American users would be transferred to and remain in the United States.

“She waited for 10 years before he arrived” – Diekola Ossai died

Earlier this month, Diekola Ossai, CEO of Cedarwood Rentals, the biggest marque in Lagos, died after giving birth to her first child in the US. She was aged 44.

Dikeola Ossai’s death didn’t only shatter those who are close to her, many who also know her story haven’t stopped crying since she died a few days ago.

The beautiful Kwara State-born businesswoman who is the 2nd daughter of former Kwara State Governor, Cornelius Oluwasegun Adebayo has been married for over 10 years without a child.

Those who know revealed to Abiola Orisile that she tried many IVFs, which failed before she tried the last one at a popular Lagos Hospital and it was a success.

Many of her close friends who she told were happy and full of joy and expecting the arrival of the baby until the news of her death broke.

She was said to have gone abroad before Covid-19 but was stuck abroad due to the pandemic.

She was hale and hearty until her time was right to deliver and she went to a renowned hospital in Virginia, United State. She was said to have given birth to a bouncing baby boy before she died.

The news which first broke on Thursday was kept under wraps until some of her friends posted her picture on their social media handle asking why she had to take a bow after giving birth.

Mrs. Diekola is survived by her husband and friend of many years and her 5 sibblings, Bukola Ajayi, Mosunmola Jegede, Abimbola Dayo Adewoye, Ayobola Toyosi Thomas.

Her presence will also be greatly missed by many of Nigeria’s top event planners and decorators.

Many of them like Zaphaire Event, Funke Bucknor, Banke Meshida of Bmpro couldn’t help but speak so glowingly of her in their posts on their Instagram page.

The boss of Cedarwood Group, Diekola is also the brain behind D Venue Event Centre in Lagos and Abuja. If not for her death, she would have opened 2 big Marquee Event Centres in Lagos. Many haven’t stopped admiring her new marquee at Surulere.

Late Diekola spent all her growing up years in Ilorin, Kwara State. Her primary, secondary and tertiary institution was in Ilorin. She graduated with a degree in Law (BL). She then went to Abuja Campus of Nigeria Law School.

She later went to Howard University, School of Law, Washington DC, USA for her LLM (Master in Law). She worked as an In-House Lawyer at the Otunba Michael Agbolade Adenuga’s Globacom in 2004 and later moved to Conoil Producing, still owned by same billionaire, also as an in house lawyer.

She later left there to start Cedarwood and built an enviable brand.

Shoprite to pull out of Nigeria

South Africa retail giant, Shoprite, has announced the commencement of a formal process to discontinue its operation in Nigeria. Shoprite Holdings Limited made the announcement on Monday in its operational and voluntary trading update for the year ended on June 28, 2020. 

The multi-national retail group, which announced a 6.4 per cent increase (R156.9billion) in total sales of merchandise for the outgoing year despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that it took the decision to discontinue its Nigeria operation “following approaches from various potential investors, and in line with our re-evaluation of the group’s operating model in Nigeria.”

“The Board has decided to initiate a formal process to consider the potential sale of all, or a majority stake, in Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Shoprite International Limited. As such, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited may be classified as a discontinued operation when Shoprite reports its results for the year. Any further updates will be provided to the market at the appropriate time,” the report stated.

While the company’s total sales of merchandise may be on the rise, it is struggling outside South Africa. According to the report, the non-South Africa supermarket operation of the company, excluding Nigeria, contributed a paltry 11.6 per cent to the group sales. Its non-South Africa sales also declined by 1.4 per cent in the year under review. The company blamed this decline on the lockdown announced in several African countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Second half constant currency sales growth of 6.3% was significantly impacted by lockdown regulations across the 14 African countries in which we trade. Lockdown restrictions pertaining to store closures; social distancing; transport restrictions; the movement of people; trading hours; workforce limitations and trade in alcohol impacted various regions to differing degrees at different times.”

Shoprite opened its first store in Nigeria in December 2005 and now has a total of 26 stores across eight states in the country including Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The company also claim to have employed more than 2,000 people in Nigeria, of which 99 per cent of them are Nigerians.

Shoprite also claimed to have built more relationships with over 300 Nigeria suppliers, small businesses and farmers.

#BBNaija: Ka3na, Lilo become first evictees from ‘Lockdown’ house

Ka3na and Lilo on Sunday became the first housemates to be evicted from the BBNaija ‘Lockdown’ house.

Big Brother introduced an interesting twist to the game on Sunday night after he technically took away the eviction powers from the viewers.

This meant that the fate of the nominated contestants was in the hands of their colleagues.

The host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, further shocked the house when he announced that it was going to be a double eviction. He said this after unveiling Lilo, Eric, Ka3na, and Praise as the least voted housemates of the week.

Biggie also said this year all the housemates except the head of the house and deputy will be up for eviction every week.

The process

This meant that Lilo, Eric, Ka3na, and Praise had to rely on fate or better still good luck and even their relationships with their fellow housemates to remain in the house. Interestingly, the four housemates were lovers in the BBNaija house. The intense voting sessions began with BrightO who selected Eric and Ka3na.

The higher majority voted out Ka3na and Lilo who Ebuka announced as the first Lockdown housemates to leave the show.

Meanwhile, MultiChoice Nigeria, the organisers announced that this season’s winner will walk away with N85 million grand prize.

The breakdown of the grand prize for BBNaija season five includes N30 million cash prize; a two-bedroom apartment courtesy Revolution Plus; a top of the range SUV from Nigerian automaker, Innoson Motors; a trip to Dublin courtesy Guinness; home appliances courtesy Scanfrost.

Tony Elumelu Indicted in N41bn NITEL Fraud, Theft

Tony Elumelu, former Managing Director of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chairman of the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the heirs Holding group, has been indicted in a N41 billion naira fraud, involving defunct Nigeria Telecommunication Company (NITEL).

Tony Elumelu was Managing Director of the bank when the fraud was perpetuated.

According to the Senate Committee Chairman on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, ”the N41billion alleged fraud was committed against the defunct Telecommunications company and National Carrier, NITEL”

17-year-old boy who 'masterminded' the massive Twitter hack arrested

Police have arrested three people involved in the recent Twitter Bitcoin hack that targeted the accounts of major public figures including Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and many others.

A British man and two Americans including a 17-year-old boy from Florida are all facing charges for scamming people across America. 

 The 17-year-old was arrested Friday July 31 and charged in Tampa, where the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office will prosecute him as an adult.

Clark faces 30 felony charges, according to the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office. The charges includes 17 counts of communications fraud (over $300), 10 counts of fraudulent use of personal information, and one count each of organized fraud (over $50,000), fraudulent use of personal information (over $100,000 or 30 or more victims) and access computer or electronic device without authority (scheme to defraud). 

“The investigation revealed Graham Ivan Clark, 17, was the mastermind of the recent hack of Twitter,” the office said.

Mason Sheppard, aka “Chaewon,” 19, of Bognor Regis, U.K., and Nima Fazeli, aka “Rolex,” 22, of Orlando, were charged in California federal court.

Sheppard was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and the intentional access of a protected computer, and Fazeli was charged with aiding and abetting the intentional access of a protected computer.

“These crimes were perpetrated using the names of famous people and celebrities, but they’re not the primary victims here,” Warren said in a news release. “This ‘Bit-Con’ was designed to steal money from regular Americans from all over the country, including here in Florida. This massive fraud was orchestrated right here in our backyard, and we will not stand for that.”

“There is a false belief within the criminal hacker community that attacks like the Twitter hack can be perpetrated anonymously and without consequence,” said U.S. Attorney David Anderson in the DOJ’s statement. “Today’s charging announcement demonstrates that the elation of nefarious hacking into a secure environment for fun or profit will be short-lived.”

On Wednesday, July 15, the hackers took control of the accounts of major public figures and corporations, including Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Michael Bloomberg, Uber, and Apple.

They tweeted a scam asking for bitcoin and they received over $100,000 worth of Bitcoin in 500 transactions, with the scam said to be one of the largest ever on a social media site.

Twitter said the hack was the result of a phone spear-phishing attack that required access to both the site’s internal network and employee credentials granting restricted access. The hacker was able to obtain passwords and other sensitive information from employees using illegitimate emails, the company said. 

The company also said the attackers also accessed direct message inboxes of 36 accounts.

Tamar Braxton thanks her Nigerian boyfriend for saving her life during suicide attempt

Tamar Braxton has specially thanked her Nigerian boyfriend David Adefeso for saving her life and helping her through recovery after her suicide attempt.

The American singer and reality star, 43, was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles after her man found her unresponsive at the couple’s residence at the Ritz Carlton in Downtown on Thursday, July 16. When he called 911, Adefeso reported that his girlfriend had been drinking before she took an unknown amount of prescription pills following a suicide attempt.

Tamar Braxton has since recovered and she has taken to Instagram to publicly show gratitude to her man.

The ‘Braxton Family Values’ star shared a sweet video of David and herself sharing a toast during a date and then wrote:

Abramovich agrees to sell stake in gold mine worth £1billion

Russian billionaire and Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich is set to get richer, as he has agreed to sell his gold mine in a deal said to be worth £1billion.

Abramovich, whose financial worth reduced this year due to the covid-19 pandemic, has agreed to sell his stake in Highland Gold Mining Ltd to Fortiana Holdings Ltd, according to Bloomberg.

The gold market is enjoying a resurgence amid the pandemic and the 53-year-old who is currently valued at around $12billion (£9m) by Forbes, will now sell his 40 per cent stake in Highland Gold, in which he was a shareholder for many years.

Fortiana Holdings Limited, a Cyprus-registered company of Russian businessman Vladislav Sviblov, agreed to buy 145,759,871 shares in Highland Gold from Abramovich and his partners at £3.00 per share.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich agrees to sell stake in gold mine worth ?1billion

Highland Gold is one of the top ten gold producers in Russia with several mines in Russia’s Far East.

The offer is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Amaechi says Nigeria will pay back Chinese debt in 20 years

Amaechi says the government needs the loans to boost infrastructure in the country.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says Nigerian government has the capability to pay back loans collected for the construction of rail projects within the stipulated period of 20 years.

Amaechi, in a statement on Saturday, said China was the only country giving out loans with a low interest rate of 2.8 per cent.

He said no country in the world would give out a loan without a guarantee to pay back such loans.

“The trade agreement between Nigeria and China, the ministry of transportation does not take loan, everything about loan is directed to the Ministry of Finance, so, I couldn’t have signed any loan because I don’t take loan.

“What I signed is what is called commercial contract, which is contract between the Federal Government and CCECC as a contractor, the contract between Nigeria and China is usually signed by the ministry of finance.

“Whether is the ministry of finance that signed it or the ministry of transportation, the issue is that nobody will give you loan free of charge.

“There must be an agreement and such agreement must contain some terms, that doesn’t mean that you are signing away the sovereignty of the country, no country will sign out its sovereignty.

“What clause 8 says is, I expect you to pay according to those terms we have agreed, if you don’t pay, don’t throw your immunity on me when I come to collect back the guarantee that was put forward, that is all.

“We are paying the loans. In the same National Assembly sitting, they were told that of the 500 million dollars loan, we have paid 96 million dollars already, Nigeria is already paying.

“And the 500 million dollars was not taken by us, it was taken by President Goodluck Jonathan in his term and that clause was there.

“Nigeria has the capacity to pay back for the period of 20 years at 2.8 per cent, which country will give you that loan? Secondly, these loans are not given to us, they are paid directly to the contractors.

“Once they sign that the job has been done, they pay the contractors and that has never happened before and this project are in place. Are they trying to rubbish the fact that there is a railway from Abuja-Kaduna?

“There is no loan in Nigeria, either internal or external that is not approved by the National Assembly, none.

“Chinese government will not even give you a loan without an approval by the National Assembly because if they give you a loan without the approval from NASS that is no loan,” Amaechi explained.

The minister further said the government needed the loans to boost infrastructure in the country.

According to him, the sovereign guarantee and sovereign immunity clause raised by the NASS is a term used to ensure that loans collected are paid back.

The minister said in the case of a default, only the assets constructed with such a loan would be taken back.

He said, “What you do is you give a sovereign guarantee and that guarantee is the immunity clause they are talking about.

“When we say, I give you a sovereign guarantee and we get immunity clause, the immunity clause is that, if tomorrow I am not able to pay and you come to collect the items we have agreed upon, that these are the items that am putting down as guarantee, I can waive my immunity and say no you can’t touch it am sovereign country.

“So, they are saying, if you are not able to pay, don’t stop us from taking back those items that will make us recover our funds. So, is China our father that will give us money for free?

“It is a standard clause in every agreement whether is America we signed it with, whether is Britain, any country would want to know that they can recover their money.

“Anybody that is saying he doesn’t know what a sovereign guarantee or immunity is, too bad for the person, because it simply means in trade that I am not giving you this loan free of charge.

“Just like you go to the bank to collect a loan, the moment you don’t pay they go after your assets you put down, that is all about the clause, the Chinese can never come and take over Aso Rock and become President or Minister.

“And if the assets you put down become depreciated then you negotiate which assets they can go after. Chinese will never take over what was not constructed with the loan.”

Amaechi noted that it would be unconstitutional to take a loan not approved by the NASS, but for confidentiality in government he would have published the clauses generating the dusts.

The minister while asking the reason for the investigation by the NASS added that they were aware of all the loans.

He said, “The Chinese is just asking us to show them the evidence that we will pay back, which is the immunity clause. If we don’t pay, they can take back their assets.”

On the Zambia experience, where the country could not meet up with its loan agreement, the minister said that the Chinese government will never take over infrastructure that was not constructed from the money taken.

He also acknowledged that the finance ministry in a payment plan had started paying back some of the loans collected.

He said the payment plan was the responsibility of the ministry of finance, and the Ministry of transportation was supposed to implement the contract.

“They are meeting the requirements, at any point in time that we need to pay, we’ll pay.

“1.6 billion dollars was taken to fix Lagos to Ibadan, we are asking for 5.3 billion dollars to fix from Ibadan to Kano.

“3.2 billion dollars to fix Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, then Lagos to Calabar which is about 11.1 billion dollars.

“If those things were done when we had money, the infrastructure will be here today? The answer is no,” Amaechi added.

The minister called on the National Assembly and Nigerians to appreciate government effort in providing infrastructure in the country.

Amaechi noted that the Itakpe-Warri rail project in the South South, which was abandoned for 34 years by successive governments, was fully rehabilitated by the present administration without seeking for loan.

About 30 shops, buildings lost in Mushin market fire

A joint team of emergency responders extinguished the fire before it escalated to more adjoining buildings.

At least 30 shops were completely destroyed in a fire outbreak at a market in the Mushin area of Lagos on Saturday, August 1, 2020.

In an update released later on Saturday, LASEMA Director-General, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu listed the affected property as a single storey building with six rooms and four shops; five bungalows with 26 shops; and a bungalow with a three-bedroom flat.

He said the affected buildings have been completely demolished to prevent any secondary incidents.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the LASEMA boss said an investigation has commenced.

Why a V-shaped plane may make a whole lot of sense

When it comes to climate change, today’s airplane pollution is a real problem.

  • A new partnership between the Delft University of Technology and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has been announced along with a plan for a striking new plane.
  • The Flying-V is a plane that’s all wing, and promises a 20% reduction in fuel use.
  • Riding in the Flying-V as it banks may not be for the faint of heart.

As more of us take to the skies more often and for longer trips, carbon emissions from aircraft are becoming a real problem. Currently, some 2.5 percent of total global CO2 emissions come from airplanes, and that number is on the rise. It’s estimated that by 2050, they’ll be responsible for 5 percent of the worldwide carbon budget — that’s 43 gigatonnes of pollution, a dirty mix of CO2 and nitrogen oxides. The source of all this is, of course, the fuel consumed by the craft.

To address this, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has announced that it’s partnering with KLM Dutch Royal Airlines on the design of a new type of plane dubbed the “Flying-V.” It was actually the brainchild of TU Berlin student Justus Benad, developed while working on his thesis. The plan is to debut a flying scale model and display a full-sized cabin section as part of the October commemoration of KLM’s 100-year anniversary. What’s exciting about the Flying-V is that it would use 20 percent less full than the most advanced plane of today, the Airbus 350. What’s worrying is that its bold shape may not fly too well.

In a press release, the dean of aerospace engineering at TU Delft, Henri Werj, discussed the project:

We are incredibly pleased to be able to cooperate with our trusted partner KLM on our combined mission to make aviation more sustainable. Radically new and highly energy-efficient aircraft designs such as the Flying-V are important in this respect, as are new forms of propulsion. Our ultimate aim is one of emission free flight. Our cooperation with KLM offers a tremendous opportunity to bring about real change.

The Flying-V, as its name suggests, is shaped like that letter of the alphabet. It’s really all wing, with no central fuselage. The passenger cabins, cargo hold, and fuel tanks live in both of the Flying-V’s wings. The wingspan of the craft would be the same as the Airbus 350, though it’s about 20 meters shorter in length. Nonetheless, the Flying-V would accommodate the same number of passengers — 314 — and have the same kerosene fuel capacity — 160m3 — even though it this amount of fuel would take the Flying-V farther. The plane’s smaller overall size would incur less aerodynamic resistance.

The partners also envision the new plane and form factor as an opportunity to improve the cabin experience for passengers, though the details on this have not been announced.

An issue that could keep the plane from every becoming a reality has to do with the manner in which planes turn in the sky: They bank as they change course, one wing tipping up as the other tips down.

In conventional craft, we sit along the spine of the fuselage, and so turns are typically fairly easy to stomach. However — and this has been a problem with previous v-wing designs — when you’re seated outward in a wing far away from that center axis, banking feels far more extreme, and may feel like more of a rollercoaster than a tolerable means of getting the family to Disneyworld. Still, the actual deployment of the Flying-V is estimated to be 20-30 years off, so there’s plenty of time to assess the severity of the problem and hopefully devise a remedy.

MacKenzie Scott has donated $1.7 billion since divorcing Amazon CEO Bezos

American Novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, whose ex-husband is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, has donated $1.7 billion of her wealth to charity over the past year after pledging to give most of it away during her lifetime.

According to Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index, Scott who received a quarter of Bezos’ Amazon shares in the couple’s divorce currently has an estimated worth of more than $62 billion. She is the second-richest woman in the world.

On Tuesday, July 28 Scott provided an update on her charitable donations in a Medium blog post and also announced that she has changed her last name to the middle name following her divorce from the Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos last year.

“Last year I pledged to give the majority of my wealth back to the society that helped generate it,” Scott wrote, referring to her 2019 signing of the Giving Pledge, the campaign organized by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet in 2010, in which the world’s wealthiest people vow to donate more than half their fortune to charities or philanthropic causes over their lifetime.

“Like many, I watched the first half of 2020 with a mixture of heartbreak and horror,” she said. “Life will never stop finding fresh ways to expose inequities in our systems; or waking us up to the fact that a civilization this imbalanced is not only unjust, but also unstable. What fills me with hope is the thought of what will come if each of us reflects on what we can offer.”

After waiting for 18 years, woman dies three days after welcoming a set of twins (photos)

A Nigerian woman who was in search of a child for eighteen years has died three days after she welcomed a set of twins.

Mrs Chika Anthonia Voghor, an indigene of Umunachi Mmukoro in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, was married to her husband, Ediri Voghor, an Urhobo man from Delta state, for eighteen years and waited to have their own children. Fate smiled on her when she confirmed she was pregnant last year. In June, Mrs Voghor, welcomed a set of twins (boy and girl). Their joy was however shortlived as she died three days after.

Speaking in an interview with Tribune, the devastated husband who is a patent medicine seller, said

“We had our traditional wedding in 2002 and had our church wedding in 2003 at the St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Warri. From 2002, she didn’t get pregnant. During those years, we were everywhere looking for a solution. We went to different hospitals but the doctors said nothing was wrong with us. Over the years, fibroid was discovered and operated surgically. During the fibroid operation, there were no complications; everything went smoothly, still no child.

Pressures were coming from everywhere; gossips and indirect mocking, but we held on to our faith in God. In fact, pressures helped to strengthen her faith in God. She so much believed in God. She laid all her hope in God Almighty that one day, God would bless her with children,” Mr Voghor disclosed.

Speaking further, Mr Voghor said

“One-day last year, she told me she was down with fever and had also missed her monthly flow; we went to the hospital for a test and it came out positive! We were very happy but we kept the news to ourselves. We didn’t want people to hear it from our mouths. Pregnancy is not something hidden, no matter how much you try to hide it, it will surely show one day. So, we wanted people to know by seeing it. From there, we registered for antenatal at Lily Hospital. It was in that hospital that we did a scan, and the scan showed she was carrying a baby. Oh God! I was beside myself with joy! I cannot explain the feeling I had. The joy was so much that I shed tears of joy”.

Mr Voghor said on June 21, his wife’s pregnancy became nine months old and they went to the hospital for her delivery. The doctors opted for Caesarian operation because of the past Fibroid operation she had done. She had the operation done and the babies, a boy and a girl were successfully delivered. Mr Voghor said his wife was in high spirit all through the first two days.

Mrs. Nwamuruamu Akachukwu Scholastica, older sister of the deceased, who now caters to the twin babies, recounts what transpired before Mrs. Voghor passed away.

“She gave birth on Monday. On Tuesday, she was happy rejoicing, and full of life. In fact, the news was an exciting one to everyone that knew her.

In the evening, that Tuesday, around 8 p.m., she told me that she was not breathing well. Then I told her to sleep and face her side. Having slept that way, she was still feeling uncomfortable, then she asked me to go and call a nurse and I immediately did that. The nurse came and found out that her pulse was low, so she quickly injected her and she became calm.

After a while, the doctor came; she complained to him that she was having serious pains and she didn’t know why. The doctor examined her and said she looked pale, then did some tests on her and found out that her blood percentage was low and she was given blood transfusion.

After that, the doctor said that they would have to do some scan on her to know why her blood percentage was low. They did it and found out that she had internal bleeding. The doctor then asked her what she had eaten and she said she took water, tea, pepper soup and rice.

Then the doctor said they would have to take her back to the theatre. Immediately she heard that she started shivering and looked scared. But the doctor assured her that everything would be okay. So, she was taken back into the theatre and brought back.

When they brought her back, the guys that were trying to lift her back to her bed, started complaining that she had so much weight. After dropping her in bed, she was calm, but after about 10 minutes, she was turning her head and rubbing her chest. Before we knew what was happening, substances started coming out of her mouth.

“I started screaming, calling for the doctor. Then one of the nurses left to call the doctor. They then took her back to the theater. I was shivering and crying. I waited for hours and nothing was happening. I didn’t see any sign of them. I then decided to call my people. Around 2am, the doctor came out and asked me to call her husband. I told him that even if I call the husband, though he has a car, there was no way he could come because there was curfew. But the doctor insisted that I called him. I called him but his number was not reachable so I had to call my brother who then called him. After some time, her husband called to say he couldn’t come because his car was bad.

He asked me if there was any problem I told him I couldn’t tell because I didn’t understand what was happening. He then said he would try his best to be around before 6:00a.m. He came but he met his wife dead. She died at exactly 5:30a.m in my presence. I couldn’t even look at the children. I was devastated.”Mrs. Nwamuruamu says

Mr. Voghor, who suspected some negligence on the part of the clinic officials, said “I leave everything to God.”

Covid19: 462 new cases of Coronavirus confirmed in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday July 31, announced that 462 new cases of Coronavirus were confirmed across the country. 

A breakdown of the new cases across states is as follows; FCT-93, Lagos-78, Plateau-64, Kaduna-54, Oyo-47, Ondo-32, Adamawa-23, Bauchi-19, Rivers-9, Ogun-9, Delta-9, Edo-7 , Kano-6, Enugu-6, Nasarawa-5, Osun-1.

There are now 43,151 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the country and 879 deaths has been recorded.  19,565 patients who recovered from the disease have been discharged.

The second victim who died when a 20-feet container fell on a bus has been identified as Chima Nnaekpe, 29.

On Sunday, July 27, two people were killed and three others were injured after a 20-feet container fell on a commercial bus at Ilasamaja on the Oshodi-Badagry Expressway in Lagos state.

An initial report revealed the first casualty to be a 27-year-old woman, Chidinma Ajoku . The second casualty is her colleague, Chima Nnaekpe, 29. Chidinma and Chima both worked in the Commercial Department, Hajj & Cargo Terminal, at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). 

They were on their way home from work when a truck, with number plate, SGM 715 XA, loaded with a 20ft container, fell on a commercial bus they were on at the bus stop.

Two commuters died on Sunday, July 26, when a 20-feet container fell on a commercial bus in Ojota, Lagos, crushing them (read here).

One of the victims has been identified as Chidinma Ajoku, aka Deedee, a staff of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.

Chidinma was on her way home from work with a male colleague when tragedy struck.

According to her mother, the bus Chidinma was in had stopped to either drop or pick passengers when a speeding trailer carrying a 20-feet container fell and the container landed on the bus.

Many people were injured but Chidinma and her male colleague died.

The bereaved mum narrated her anguish and fear as she waited all night for her daughter’s return only to be informed the following day that there was an accident and the casualties had been taken to the hospital. When she got to the hospital, she was told her daughter isn’t one of those brought in and she was referred to another hospital in Yaba. The second hospital referred her to the morgue where she saw her daughter’s body.

Crying, the mother asked the state government to do something about the tankers and trailers on the road so that no life will be lost again in this way.

Insecurity: Nigerians know we have done our best – President Buhari

President Buhari says Nigerians know that his administration has done its best in fighting insecurity.

A statement from the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the President said this when he spoke to state house correspondents after observing the Eid El-Kabir prayers with his family members and close aides at the presidential villa in Abuja today, July 31.

According to President Buhari, his administration inherited security challenges and have worked effectively to tackle them all.

“I want Nigerians to be very conscious of their country and what we inherited when we came in 2015 was Boko Haram in the north-east and the militancy in the south-south… Nigerians know that we have done our best.

What is coming up in the North West and North Central is very disturbing indeed but I believe the military, the police, and other law enforcement agencies from the report I am getting, I think they could do much better.

They could do much better, but we are keeping them on the alert all the time to do their duties.” the President is quoted as saying

The President said while much has been achieved security-wise, more still needs to be done.

“He (the President) said considering the security situation on ground when he came to office, ‘Nigerians know that we have done our best. However, what is coming out of the North West and the North Central is very disturbing’ Shehu said in a statement.

Responding to a specific question on the performance of the service chiefs which recently, he said needed to get better, the President said that the military, the police, and other security agencies are working hard.

We are making available resources to them to even do better,” he assured, adding that “from the reports I am getting, they could do much better…they could do much better. But we are keeping them on the alert all the time to do their duties.”

Donald Trump says he will ban TikTok in United States today

President Donald Trump has revealed plans to ban TikTok app in the United States through executive authority today.

“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump told reporters while flying home from Florida on Friday evening, July 31.

The president said he would sign something as soon as Saturday, and he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order.

“Well, I have that authority,” he said.

Trump called the decision “severance” and firmly rejected the reported deal involving Microsoft buying TikTok.

The app, which allows users to film and share short videos of themselves along to accompanying music, is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. 

US lawmakers have raised national security concerns over TikTok’s handling of user data, accusing the short-form video app of being a threat to national security because of its ties to China. They also allege that the company could be compelled to “support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.”

Reacting to the impending move, a TikTok spokesperson told ABC News: “These are the facts: 100 million Americans come to TikTok for entertainment and connection, especially during the pandemic. 

“We’ve hired nearly 1,000 people to our U.S. team this year alone, and are proud to be hiring another 10,000 employees into great paying jobs across the US. Our $1 billion creator fund supports U.S. creators who are building livelihoods from our platform.”

“TikTok U.S. user data is stored in the U.S., with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the U.S. We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform.”

Boko Haram: ‘They’ll never repent’ — Senator Ndume

Boko Haram attack a community in Borno state, Nigeria

Senator Ali Ndume, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army, has kicked against the reintegration of ex-Boko Haram fighters into the society. 

The Nigerian Military last week, released 601 repentant Boko Haram terrorists into the community after they completed the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration program organized by the Operation Safe Corridor of the Military.

In an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday July 29, Ndume who represents Borno South Senatorial District, said the rehabilitation exercise is unacceptable by his people. According to him, the sect members will never repent from their wicked ways.

Kicking against the program, Ndume said

“This government’s programme is unacceptable to our people. The right thing is to stop it, forthwith. Not that they even apologised to you, they apologized to the government with the thinking that government has failed and that is why they are being pampered,” he said.

They are like Kharajites. Many among those released have since run away. They will never repent.

The government should know what to do about them. But not re-introducing someone to you, who has killed your parent, or your relations.

“If there is sincerity of purpose in this, those in the IDP camps should be trained in various trades and vocation so that they could start life again.”

“China won’t give Nigeria loan again if probing continues” – Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has warned the house of representatives committee on treaties and agreements against continuing the probe on loan agreement between Nigeria and China. 

The Minister who noted that the federal government requested $500 million from the Chinese government to finance some rail projects across the country particularly in the south-east, asked for suspension of the probe till the loan is secured. 

Amaechi averred that some sections of the country will suffer if China refuses to give Nigeria loan to complete ongoing projects. 

He said;

“I have said here to the house, and it is a pity that I’m saying it in public, this government, outside Nigeria, they are sensitive to what you say. Nobody is stopping you from your investigation and no government from outside Nigeria can stop you from doing it. 

“We are saying that Nigeria has applied for three loans already. For Port Harcourt-Maiduguri (eastern rail line), the minister of finance told me that she was stopped and told that the next borrowing plan would not be approved unless you get Port Harcourt-Maiduguri. Port Harcourt-Maiduguri goes through the south-east and the north-east.

“The only south-south town is Port Harcourt. We are about to apply for a loan. They will not grant that loan. Then you summoned us back to the House to ask why we are constructing Lagos-Kano and we are not constructing Port Harcourt-Maiduguri.

“Can we be allowed to get this loan? Then you can summon us, not to start what you are doing and the whole process will then be stopped.

“My fear is that at the end of the day, some sections of this country will suffer if they stop giving us loans; two projects that will suffer: the first one is Lagos-Ibadan (rail line), we have not finished disbursement.

“We are asking for a loan to commence work from Ibadan to Kano. The day they (China) say ‘the government is not supporting the loans you people are taking, we are no longer giving you,’ that is the end of the project.”

“The economy of this country can only be propelled by transportation. We don’t mind this investigation but can we please shift it to December or January when we would have possibly taken these loans. 

“Once we get these loans, chairman, turn me upside down, I will answer you.There are rumblings up there in China and there are loans we have asked for.

“If your government is not in agreement with this – don’t forget that there are all sorts of allegations against China here and there – we can stop. The moment it is stopped, the following things will happen – Lagos-Ibadan is not completed.”

Man opens fire on mother and son for failing to observe ‘social distancing’

A man has been arrested for shooting at a mother and son after he became upset with the pair for failing to observe ‘social distancing’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

47-year-old Douglas Marks from Miami confronted the woman and her son in the lobby of the Crystal Beach Suites in Miami Beach on Monday evening,

According to the affidavit, Marks told Veronica Pena and her son who were visiting Miami Beach from New Mexico: ‘You aren’t social distancing.’  He then asked them to leave the hotel before bringing out a black firearm which he shot ‘several’ times in the lobby.

No one was injured in the shooting but Marks was later arrested by Miami Beach police.

One witness, who spoke to Local10 but chose to remain anonymous said: ‘He tried to shoot the girl and the kid.’

Marks has allegedly confessed to the shooting but told detectives that he fired his weapon because he was being followed, and asked the front desk to call 911.

As of Tuesday night, Marks remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Local10 said. He faces several charges following the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public.

Jealous man kidnaps his ex-wife for a ‘romantic date’

A man kidnapped his ex-wife at knifepoint and stuffed her inside a blue sports bag before dragging her to a forest for a “romantic date”.

Video footage below shows “jealous” Yaroslav Fokin, 35, a former special forces officer wheeling silver medalist runner Elena Rukhlyada, 34, out of her flat in Novosibirsk, south Russia.

Fokin carefully wheeled the bag to the carpark before driving off to a remote forest, where he released her and gave her a bouquet of flowers during the bizarre “romantic date”.

Police later found the athlete unharmed after she was reported missing and arrested Fokin. He was found guilty of kidnapping by the Zaeltsovsky District Court and is currently serving a four-and-a-half year sentence in a maximum-security prison.

Elena, who won a silver medal in the 2011 Mountain Running World Championship, has now recounted her terrifying ordeal at the hands of her ex-husband.

Speaking to Russian paper Komsomolskaya Pravda, she said: “I was very scared at that moment because about a month before he had got mad and told me ‘I’ll kill you. Slowly.’

Elena said Fokin burst into her kitchen in July last year, tying her and a friend up, before she was stuffed into a sports bag.

“I was trying to chew the tape to release myself but understood that there was no way I could escape.

“I thought it was the end.”

“I did not interfere as he was evil and could use the knife. He brought me to a place in the forest and presented me with flowers like it was a romantic date.”

According to Elena, she is worried about what will happen when Fokin leaves prison.

“I will do everything possible to minimise contact with him. I want to appeal to the state to provide me with protection after he is freed.

“I don’t need any money or alimony from him. I want to think that he simply doesn’t exist. It’s scary when you can’t even freely walk outside your house without someone watching you.

Publish the names of lawmakers awarded NDDC contracts – HR

The last has not been heard regarding the faceoff between the House of Representatives and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Benjamin Kalu on Tuesday, July 28, the House is insisting that the Minister must publish the names of the lawmakers that have been awarded. The House in the statement said the minister failed to substantiate the allegation that national assembly members get most of the NDDC contracts. 

While appearing before a panel probing the alleged mismanagement of N81.5 billion by the interim management committee (IMC) of the NDDC, Akpabio had said federal lawmakers were the biggest beneficiaries of the contracts awarded by the commission.

Subsequently, the speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, gave the minister a 48-hour ultimatum to publish the names of the legislators who got those contracts or face legal action. Akpabio in a response letter, listed some senators and house of reps members as beneficiaries but they all denied getting the contracts. The House on July 23 resolved to issue a criminal complaint of perjury and civil defamation lawsuit against Akpabio after he failed to publish the names of members of the National Assembly that have been awarded contracts by the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC.

Kalu in the statement released on Tuesday evening, July 28 accused Akpabio of sending a private letter to the speaker instead of publishing the names of those he accused of being beneficiaries of NDDC contracts.

“Instead of publishing the list for the world to see in the interest of transparency, the Minister in his usual diversionary tactics, chose to send an irrelevant 8-paragraph private letter to the Speaker regarding projects of 2018 which pre-date the 9th House of Representatives and had little to do with the bogus claims he made.

The House, therefore, reiterates that the Minister was given an ultimatum to publish names and not to write a personal letter to the Speaker. The Honourable Minister is hereby cautioned to desist from spinning tales and is invited to go public as instructed.” the statement read

Kalu said Akpabio’s letter was irrelevant to the issues raised, adding that the lawmakers were already evaluating the minister’s response and are still considering taking legal action against him if he fails to publish in detail the names of the lawmakers that have been awarded contracts by the Commission.

Following a motion unanimously adopted by the House, an investigation was ordered into the activities and financial malfeasance of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and its Interim Management Committee (IMC) between the periods of January to May 2020.

In a coordinated and calculated attempt to distract Nigerians from the ongoing investigation, the Minister of NDDC and the leadership of the IMC raised spurious allegations against members of the National Assembly.

The Minister claimed under oath that 60% of all the NDDC projects under investigation were awarded to members of the House between the months of January and May 2020.

Following this disturbing allegation, the leadership of the 9th House issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Minister to publish a list of the legislators allegedly awarded 60% of the entire projects of NDDC between January and May 2020.

Instead of publishing the list for the world to see in the interest of transparency, the Minister in his usual diversionary tactics, chose to send an irrelevant 8-paragraph private letter to the Speaker regarding projects of 2018 which pre-date the 9th House of Representatives and had little to do with the bogus claims he made.

The House, therefore, reiterates that the Minister was given an ultimatum to publish names and not to write a personal letter to the Speaker. The Honourable Minister is hereby cautioned to desist from spinning tales and is invited to go public as instructed.

Nevertheless, it will interest Nigerians to know that paragraph 3 of the Minister’s letter fully exonerated the 9th Assembly. Also, in paragraph 7, the Minister completely withdrew his previous statement about 60% of the NDDC projects being awarded to members of the 9th Assembly.

It is also instructive for Nigerians to note that the total number of projects in the 2019 NDDC budget was 5,959 out of which 5,416 projects were rolled over from 2018, which the 9th Assembly obviously had no influence or control over.

Therefore, unable to prove his claims, the Minister presented an ineffectual spreadsheet of only 266 projects out of which about 20 projects were attracted by past members of the National Assembly as constituency projects, not as contractors, but in furtherance of their representative mandate.

The projects presented in the Minister’s letter are not within the scope of the investigation and do nothing to address the leadership’s ultimatum for him to publish the list of names of the members who he claimed took 60% of NDDC projects from January to May 2020.

Also, contrary to the mischievous narrative being peddled on the internet, the only mention of the Chairman of the NDDC Committee of the 9th House of Representatives, Rep. Tunji Ojo in that letter, was as to his alleged request for the complete payment of 19 contractors who had approached him with complaints over NDDC’s non-payment for their services.

This is, however, an allegation which has been completely refuted by Rep. Ojo and for which there is no evidence linking him.

The one member of the House mentioned in that letter only attracted the project to his federal constituency, in the same manner that the NDDC MD, EDFA, EDP, Chairman etc applied to the Commission for attention to the needs of their people and were obliged.

This attraction of projects does not in any way mean that contracts were personally awarded to them.

Additionally, the letter also listed the names of contract awardees with no evidence linking them to those who attracted the projects to the beneficiary communities. It takes lifting the corporate veil for the directors to be seen and the Corporate Affairs Commission is there to establish who the real owners of the companies are.

Until then, it is wrong to attempt to establish a nexus which currently does not exist. The document remains a mere spreadsheet of people who attracted projects to their communities in furtherance of their representative functions.

Furthermore, the directive to press charges against the Minister has not been lifted by the House as the leadership is busy considering the weight of the Honourable Minister’s letter. If it does not clear the doubt and wrong perception, it will be sent to the court for clearance as the Speaker stated.

Once again, the letter’s annexures showing 2018 projects have no relevance to what was requested from the Minister because it was outside the scope of his claims, it was also not comprehensive but selective by mentioning only one current member for attracting projects to his constituency and not for receiving contracts.

The House is mindful of a letter currently before it where the Minister also applied to attract several projects to his Senatorial Zone during his time at the Senate, does it mean the contracts were awarded to him?

Nigerians are encouraged to ignore the deflections of the Honourable Minister and continue to ask the right questions as to what happened to the money of the region which has led to a gross disservice to Niger-Deltans.

Nigerians should start asking the right questions and demanding the right answers; and the right question remains, “What happened to Nigeria’s ?81.5billion under the charge of NDDC in the space of 6 months?”

Fire: Two confirmed dead as gas explosion rocks Ajao estate, Lagos

Two persons have been confirmed dead in a gas explosion that rocked Afariogun Street in the Ajao area of Lagos State this evening Tuesday, July 28.

The explosion started from a shop used in refilling gas cylinders. Nine shops were razed in the explosion and a number of cars were also burnt.

According to reports, the accident happened after a 62-year-old woman, who runs a cooking gas shop and her 32-year-old daughter were called back to their shop to attend to a “regular customer” who came to fill a gas cylinder. The woman returned and successfully attended to the customer. However, the sad incident happened when the customer tried putting the gas cylinder into a waiting tricycle, it fell and exploded.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said the fire had been extinguished and that the bodies of the deceased persons have been evacuated from the scene of the incident.

FG has spent N15.8bn on hazard allowances – Ngige

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, says the Federal Government has so far spent N15.8 billion on hazard allowances in its teaching hospitals and medical centres across the country.

Ngige disclosed this while addressing newsmen at a meeting with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) leadership in Abuja on Monday, July 27. The Resident Doctors over the weekend, threatened to go on another warning start in August if their needs which includes payment of their hazard allowance, provision of PPEs and others, are not met.

At the meeting which was held to assess the level of implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered by both parties, Ngige said the federal government was committed to the safety and welfare of all health workers in the country.  

“The federal government has so far spent N15.8 billion naira for hazard allowances in its teaching hospitals, medical centres and some other non- COVID-19 facilities where doctors have also been treating virus cases.  

Government has cleared the April and May special allowances which is no doubt a big feat, knowing that this is for special allowances only, and at a time its earning has fallen short of the expected earning.  

The affected medical personnel will also draw their normal salaries and other allowances,” he said.

Ngige added that the June allowances for the medical practitioners were still outstanding because the budget has been affected by some other demands that were not originally captured such as payment for house officers, interns, NYSC doctors and volunteers.   He, however, added that government was already liaising with the Presidential Taskforce to sort out payments especially for volunteers.

The Minister also disclosed at the meeting that the government has paid all the premium for Group Life Insurance spanning between April 17, 2020, and April 16, 2021 for all federal civil servants except those in the revenue-generating agencies such as customs, FIRS and NNPC who could afford their own insurance.   He said an agreement has been reached to forward the nominal roll of the Health Ministry workers and its parastatals to the six handling insurance companies latest next week for payments.

Kano Islamic scholars reject proposed castration of rapists

Islamic scholars in Kano under the aegis, Council of Ulamas, state have kicked against the decision made by state As­sembly for the castration punishment for the offense of rape in the state.

The state House of Assembly had on July 15, adopted the proposal for the castration of confirmed rapists following a motion sponsored by a member, Mr Nuraddeen Alhassan.

However, in a statement released by its chairman Sheik Ibrahim Khalil and made available to newsmen in Kano, the Islamic scholars argued that the punishment of castration for rape is against the teaching of Islam. According to the Islamic scholars, the lawmakers need to go back and bring out Old Kano Sharia Law, which states the punishment for rapists.

They noted that there is stated punishment in the law for rape offend­ers and adulterers, which are all major sins in Islam.

Sheik Ibrahim Khalil said the Council of Ulama will visit Kano State House of Assembly to interact with the members on the matter.

Kanye West has reportedly filed to appear on the New Jersey ballot in November’s presidential election in his latest bid for the White House. 

The 43-year-old rapper submitted petitions with 1,327 signatures to get on the ballot for New Jersey, surpassing the 800 required signatures before the deadline day in order to appear as an independent candidate in the Garden State, TMZ reported.

West has also submitted documents to get on the ballot in Missouri, where 10,000 signatures are required and it costs more than $30,000 to apply. He is also planning to do the same in New York and will need 30,000 signatures by Thursday’s deadline in the Empire State.

The father of four will officially be on the presidential ballot in Oklahoma after filing the proper paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to make the run. 

On the same day of his New Jersey application, West was pictured with wife Kim Kardashian West after the reality star flew down to Wyoming for marriage crisis talks with the troubled rapper over his recent behavior on social media.

During their intense conversation inside a vehicle, Kim broke down in tears following Kanye’s political campaign rally and Twitter meltdown, where he disclosed how he encouraged her to abort their first child and revealed how he had been planning divorce to her over a meeting she had with rapper Meek Mill at a hotel for prison reform.

Indonesia: Two women are whipped 100 times each for online pimping

Two Indonesian women have been publicly whipped nearly 100 times each for selling sex workers’ services online, an official in the country’s conservative Aceh province said today.

The punishment was handed down on Monday, July 27, in Langsa city, Aceh. 

Despite the bans on crowds over Coronavirus fears, several people gathered to watch the pair get lashed for the crimes they had committed.

Aji Asmanuddin, the head of Langsa’s Islamic sharia agency, said the two hijab-wearing suspects were arrested in March along with five sex workers, who could also face a flogging if found guilty of violating Islamic law. 

They were punished for violating sharia by advertising (sex) through the internet,’ Asmanuddin said.

Officials were struggling to crack down on the area’s booming online sex trade, he added.

‘This is the first (pimping) case in Langsa although we believe there are many of them out there,’ Asmanuddin said.

‘We just don’t have the necessary tools to monitor them online.’

Aceh is the only region in Muslim-majority Indonesia to impose Islamic sharia law, which allows flogging on several offenses including prostitution, gambling, adultery, drinking alcohol, and gay sex.

Entire Spanish village is quarantined after 12-year-old girl tests positive for Covid19

The entire population of a Spanish village with about 200 residents has been put into quarantine today after a 12-year-old girl tested positive for Coronavirus.

Fernando Resino Carrillo, the mayor of Sotillo de las Palomas explained the decision, saying the vast majority of the 200 residents fall into the risk category because of their age and he is worried that the virus might spread.

He has ordered everyone to stay at home for at least ten days after a girl contracted Covid-19. But refused to disclose how the girl got the virus but tests are being carried out on children she has been in contact with. 

The Ministry of Health of Castilla-La Mancha has also started tracking people who may have been in contact with her family in recent days.

According to reports, the girl is being isolated at home and has not needed hospital treatment while the relatives in her household have not shown symptoms but are awaiting their test results.  

Spain has recorded 278,782 Coronavirus cases and 28,434 deaths in total.

Rapper and record producer, Drake has beaten Madonna’s record for the highest number of Top 10 hits in US chart history.

The Canadian born rapper broke the record after his collaboration with DJ Khaled, Popstar polled at No 3 while Greece charted at No 8 this week, bringing his total Top 10 hits to 40 and beating Madonna’s record of 38.

In March, he also broke the record for the most hits in the US Hot 100, at 208 but as at July that tally has now reached 224, aided by his most recent full-length release, Dark Lane Demo Tapes, which came out in May. Every track from it placed on the Hot 100, including hit track, Toosie Slide at No 1.

Some persons are making moves to destabilize Nigeria — DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised an alarm of plans by some people to destabilize the country. 

The secret police’s spokesperson, Peter Afunanya said some unnamed persons are planning to take advantage of the insecurity in the country to destabilize it.

It was further alleged that some prominent personalities and socio-cultural groups have resorted to divisive acts through inciting statements aimed at pitting individuals, groups and ethnic nationalities against another.

The statement read;

The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered plans by some persons and groups desirous of taking advantage of latest developments in parts of the country to destabilize it.

Some prominent personalities and socio-cultural groups have resorted to divisive acts through inciting statements aimed at pitting individuals, groups and ethnic nationalities against another.

The Service is, without doubt, aware of these plans and their sponsors. Consequently, it warns that it will no longer tolerate the orchestrations by subversive and unscrupulous elements to cause a breakdown of law and order in the country.

In this regard, it is working assiduously with relevant authorities and sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the sinister objective is not achieved.

The Service reiterates its commitment to the internal security of Nigeria and will, within the confines of the law, decisively deal with planners of the mayhem. Law abiding citizens are urged to go about their normal businesses and disregard the antics of agents of destabilization.

They should, however, avail the Service and related agencies with useful information about the activities of criminals and groups intent on instigating violence in the country.

Australia: Australian police have warned “virtual kidnapping” scams by criminals and foreign students

Australian police have warned universities and Chinese officials about “virtual kidnapping” scams by criminal gangs that coerce foreign students to fake their own kidnappings and trick families overseas into paying ransoms.

Police said in a statement that eight students in the state of New South Wales (NSW) were targeted in “virtual kidnapping” scams this year, with overseas relatives paying a total of 3.2 million Australian dollars ($2.3 million) in ransom.

In one case, the father of a 22-year-old Chinese student in Sydney reportedly paid more than $1.4 million after being sent a video of his daughter bound in an unknown location.

Another family in China said they paid more than $14,000 after receiving a video of their 22-year-old relative bound and blindfolded via the messaging app WeChat. She was later found by NSW police safe in a hotel room.

The student victims are left “traumatized by what has occurred, believing they have placed themselves, and their loved ones, in real danger,” said NSW Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell in a statement.

“We have had a spate in the last few months where pretty much every weekend we have had a victim fall for one of these scams,” said Darren Benett, director of the crime command in the state of New South Wales, whose capital is Sydney.

“If you get one of these phone calls, hang up, ring the police, ring your university, but just don’t pay any money,” he added in a televised news conference.

The NSW police said that scammers were targeting vulnerable members of the Chinese-Australian community. 

Scam perpetrators call intended victims in the guise of a local Chinese official to warn they have been implicated in a crime in China and must pay a fee to avoid legal action, arrest, or deportation, police said.

Some scammers tell victims to sever contact with family and friends, rent a hotel room and take pictures or video recordings of themselves bound and blindfolded, and then send the images to their relatives overseas to exert pressure, the police added.

“We need to take into account the cultural factors and the fact that the scams are very polished,” said state police official Peter Thurtell.

He called on the Muslims to continue to imbibe the spirit of love, peace, kindness and sacrifice, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) and to also use the period to pray for peace, unity, prosperity and the stability of the country especially as the world is witnessing global health challenges caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

Aregbosola who assured that the administration of President Buhari is fully committed to battling the scourge with the cooperation of all Nigerians, emphasized that the government would continue to foster peaceful coexistence, national cohesion, and stability in its march towards actualizing the full potentials of the country.

He called on all Nigerians to join hands with the administration of President Buhari in its avowed determination to build a peaceful, harmonious, and prosperous country, where the rights of every citizen, are protected and guaranteed, as enshrined in the Constitution of the FRN.

Egypt: 5 young women going to prison for posting “indecent” dance videos on TikTok

An Egyptian court has sentenced five young women to two years in prison for posting “indecent” dance videos on TikTok.  

The prosecution statement named two of the defendants 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada Eladhm and said the other three helped run their social media accounts.

The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (A$26,000) each for “violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family,” inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor.

Haneen Hossam and Mawada Eladhm rose to fame though TikTok, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets which include sharing of footage of themselves wearing makeup, posing in cars, dancing in kitchens and making funny skits.

However, their social media stardom became their undoing in a country, where citizens can land in prison for vague crimes such as “misusing social media,” “disseminating fake news,” or “inciting debauchery and immorality.”

Their lawyers have vowed to appeal the ruling.

Eladhm’s lawyer, Ahmed el-Bahkeri, confirmed the sentencing, saying the prosecution deemed Eladhm’s photos and videos “disgraceful and insulting.”

“Eladhm was crying in court. Two years? 300,000 Egyptian pounds? This is really something very tough to hear,” said Samar Shabana, the attorney’s assistant.

“They just want followers. They are not part of any prostitution network, and did not know this is how their message would be perceived by prosecutors,” she added, in reference to their posts encouraging young women to share videos and chat with strangers in exchange for money on another social media platform.

A widely circulated online petition described the arrests as a “systematic crackdown that targets low-income women,” following the arrest 10 female TikTok users have been detained or prosecuted by authorities in recent months.

US shuts down one of its consulate in China

The American flag over the US consulate building in the Chinese city of Chengdu was lowered on Monday morning July 27, after the Chinese government ordered the closure of the building.

Beijing ordered the US embassy to close on Friday in a tit-for-tat move amid worsening relations between Beijing and Washington, after the US instructed China’s consulate in Houston, Texas, to cease operations, claiming China has been engaging in a large scale espionage effort across different consulates in the country.

After the US ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate last week,  China gave the US a 72-hour time frame to close their own consulate in Chengdu.

According to Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV, onlookers were moved back by police surrounding the building as the consulate shut down today.

Over the weekend, hundreds of people had gathered outside the US consulate in the city of 16.5 million people, taking selfies and waving Chinese flags after China’s order.


On Saturday, the US insignia was taken down, while on Sunday the US plaque outside the embassy was removed while shipping containers were loaded onto trucks, as staff prepared for the consulate to be closed.

”The US Chengdu consulate closed at 10 a.m. “Relevant Chinese authorities then entered from the main entrance and took over,” the Chinese Foreign ministry said in a statement posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo on Monday morning.
 

A video posted to Twitter by the US Mission in China on Monday morning featured images of the building being opened by then-Vice President George Bush in 1985.

“Today, we bid farewell to the US Consulate General in Chengdu. We will miss you forever,” the mission’s official post said.

Breaking: Secondary school students to resume August 4 for WAEC exams starting August 17

The Ministry of Education has announced that exit classes in Secondary schools across the nation will reopen for academic activities on August 4.

A statement released this afternoon July 27, by the Director of Press, Ministry Of Education, Ben Bem Goong, says students in exit classes are to resume immediately after the Salah breaks so they can take their WAEC examinations scheduled to begin August 17.

Goong said this decision was taken at the virtual consultative meeting of the Federal Ministry of Education, Commissioners of Education in the 36 states, the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Proprietors of Private schools, and Chief Executive of Examination bodies.

The Federal government had initially suspended the reopening of schools due to the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Two die as container falls on bus in Lagos

Two persons have been confirmed dead while three others were injured after a 20-feet container fell on a commercial bus at Ilasamaja on the Oshodi-Badagry Expressway in Lagos state.

A statement released by the Director-General Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, today July 27,  said the accident occurred on Sunday, July 26 and that the dead bodies and injured persons were taken to the Isolo General Hospital.

Oke-Osanyintolu said those who died had been identified as a male and female.

He said when the LASEMA Responder got to the scene, it discovered that the truck with registration number SGM 715 XA and loaded with a 20-ft container had collided with the commercial bus discharging passengers under the bridge at Ilasamaja at about 7p.m.

He said that three other passengers, including the bus driver, sustained injuries and were transferred to the Isolo General Hospital by LASEMA’’s Responder.

Rahmat Abdullahi describes infected her daughter after contracting Coronavirus

Rahmat Abdullahi, the Council Secretary of Abuja Municipal Area Council revealed that she contracted Covid-19 “in the course of service” and she infected her daughter.

She explained that it was a period of “indescribable pain and trauma”.

Thankfully, both mother and daughter are better now and have returned home.

She wrote: “I contracted #COVID19 in the course of service then shared the virus with my daughter. Indescribable pain and trauma… Today, my lovely daughter and I are back home hale and hearty. AlhamduliLlah, and thank you all for your love and prayers. We defeated coronavirus!”

Former Governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi has stated that Coronavirus has exposed years of leadership failure in Nigeria. 

The former Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said this at a virtual event tagged ‘The Global Economy: Adapting to the New Normal’ and organised by Bridge Leadership Foundation. 

Obi who stated that the process of selecting leaders in the country is weak, added that recent events in the country shows ”lunatics have taken over the asylum”.

“COVID-19 offered us an opportunity to see the result of cumulative failure of leadership over the years. It is time for persons who are competent to lead. 

“Nigeria has time to realise that we now have to change the process of selecting our leaders because it is weak. If you look at what has been happening in Nigeria in recent times, we are now in a situation where the lunatics have taken over the asylum and they must leave now – all of us, including myself. It is time to get people who have ideas and everything.

“A situation where we have people in leadership who are incapable of learning new things has to change. Nigeria don’t need leadership who are trapped in the processes of yesterday, we want those who have something to offer for tomorrow.

“In a society where people have excelled, they have achieved such because they have being given an opportunity. When we are talking about the new normal, we also have to look at our environment. We need to start thinking differently about those that govern us also.”
