Hungary has passed new anti-LGBT laws ahead of a must win 2022 election for hardline nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The legislation passed on Tuesday, June 15 by Hungary’s parliament bans the dissemination of content in schools deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban (pictured above) has rallied against LGBT people and immigrants amid strong criticism from human rights groups and opposition parties.

His Fidesz party, which promotes a Christian-conservative agenda, joined the proposal banning school talks on LGBT issues to a another bill that strictly penalizes pedophilia, making it much harder for opponents of the anti-LGBT bill to vote against it.

A mass rally was held outside parliament on Monday, June 14. But on Tuesday Fidesz lawmakers overwhelmingly backed the legislation.

According to the law, under-18s cannot be shown any content that encourages gender change or homosexuality. This also applies to advertisements. The law sets up a list of organizations allowed to provide education about sex in schools.

Hungary is one of the few European countries where
gay marriage is not recognized.

In the country only heterosexual couples can legally adopt children.

Orban’s government defined marriage as the union between one man and one woman in the constitution, and limited gay adoption.

Other countries like Russia, Poland, Romania have also passed similar laws and at are odds with European Union over some of their gay supporting reforms and laws.

The European Parliament’s rapporteur in Hungary, Greens lawmaker Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, slammed the new law on Tuesday: “Using child protection as an excuse to target LGBTIQ people is damaging to all children in Hungary.”

“You are not only elected to borrow money for Nigeria” – Wike tells Buhari

Governor Nyesom Wike has accused President Buhari of attempting to shift his constitutional role of securing lives and property to governors.

Recall that during an interview with Arise TV on Thursday, Buhari said he told two south-west governors who came to meet him in Abuja, to return to their states and tackle the security challenges their people are facing because they also campaigned for their position just like him.

Reacting to this while commissioning the 21-kilometre Odufor-Akpoku-Umuoye Road in Etche Local Government Area of the State on Tuesday June 15, Wike enjoined the federal government to admit that it can no longer fulfil the promises it made to Nigerians, adding that admitting weakness publicly when there is failure makes a leader respectable.

He also mocked the President by saying that he is not only in-charge when it comes to borrowing money for the country.

Wike said;

“Mr President, you are the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. You appoint Inspector-General of Police, you appoint the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, the Commissioner of Police, Director of Department of State Service, and other heads of security.

“Which one do we appoint? How can people appointed by Mr President be under me?

“It is not only to borrow money for Nigeria that you’re in charge. You must also be in charge of other things including security. Who signed order 10? Is it the governors?

“Mr. President was short of calling names of those governors who run to Aso Rock when they are supposed to stay in their states to see the needs of their states and people. Mr. President should have come out openly and said, my APC governors, stop worrying me. Go back to your states and do your work. On that, I support him.

“Thank God, Mr. President knows that I am not one of those that go to visit him over one problem or the other. I, as the governor of Rivers under PDP, you’ll never find me there.”

A ‘possessive’ husband beat and critically injured his wife with a crowbar at a bus stop in New York as witnesses watched in horror, then called police to turn himself in.

Julio Aponte, 63, used the crowbar to repeatedly bash his 49-year-old wife in the head at about 7 a.m. Monday June 14 at the corner of W. 163rd St. and Fort Washington Ave., screaming accusations like “How dare you cheat on me!” Police said.

He then ran away from the crime scene on a motorcycle, leaving his bloodied wife behind while shocked witnesses called police.

Shortly afterward the violent husband ditched the motorcycle on the road and called 911 himself to turn himself in, cops said.

Police found the crowbar, wrapped in plastic, as well as Aponte’s backpack at the scene of the attack, police say.

The woman was then rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia in cardiac arrest, after she suffered severe head trauma, police said. She remains in critical condition as at Tuesday, June 15.

Police have charged Aponte with attempted murder and assault. He awaits arraignment in Manhattan criminal court.

New York City to offer $2500 cash prize each to 10 lucky winners for getting COVID-19 vaccine

The city of New York has announced it will be giving out $2500 cash to 10 lucky New Yorkers who get vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to New York Mayor,  De Blasio’s office, the effort is to encourage more people to get vaccinated.

The Mayor’s office announced that winners will be picked through a lottery to receive the cash after getting a COVID shot and the cash payments will come in the form of debit cards.

According to de Blasio’s office the $2500 can “make a massive difference in people’s lives.”

More than 8.7 million New Yorkers had gotten vaccinated as of Tuesday morning, June 15, to the mayor’s office and New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo has already lifted up major restrictions in the state that was the hotspot for COVID-19 in the US during the pandemic.

Mayor De Blasio recently said the city likely wouldn’t meet his goal of having 5 million people fully vaccinated by the end of June but they will still fight to get close to that number.

This is not the first incentive the city has given for people to get vaccinated.

In New York City, offers have included everything from Yankees and Mets tickets to free eats, along with lottery tickets.

The feds are promoting cruise sweepstakes and dating app perks as well.

“We continue to add incentives. We continue to make it more and more exciting for people,” de Blasio boasted at a Tuesday, June 15 press conference.

“Vaccination continues to be the key, but we also love that we’re seeing more and more activity out in the streets, more and more tourism, more and more jobs coming back,” he added.

Young man accidentally shoots friend while showing off his new gun

A man accidentally shot his friend in the neck as he showed off his new weapon, police say.

Alec Augustino Braz, 22, mistakenly fired his pistol at his 19-year-old friend at around 3.15pm on Saturday, June 1.

The shooting happened not long after Braz got his license to carry a gun, Newsweek reports.

Woburn Police Department near Boston in Massachusetts revealed in a statement that Braz is suspected of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, improper storage of a firearm, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Police handcuffed Braz on multiple firearm offences shortly after the shooting.

Police explained that Braz was showing the gun to his friend in his Woburn home on Saturday afternoon when he accidentally pulled the trigger on his guest who has not been named.

Another friend then drove the victim to a local hospital with injuries which the police department report to be non-life-threatening.

According to Newsweek, a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol was seized from Braz by officers from the Woburn Police Department following the shooting on Saturday.

Braz also had his newly gained gun license suspended by police chief Robert F Rufo Jr.

Lionel Messi confessed that he may have contracted Covid-19 whilst on Copa America

Messi 'agrees to €700m Man City contract'

Argentina striker, Lionel Messi has confessed that he fears about contracting COVID-19 while on international duty for the Copa America amid increasing cases of infections among rival teams.

Players and officials from Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela tested positive for Covid-19 virus even before the tournament kicked off with Brazil’s 3-0 victory over depleted Venezuela in Brasilia.

Messi said the fear of contracting the virus was widespread in the squad.

“It worries us because it is a risk for everyone catching Covid,” he said. “We try to be careful but it’s not easy. These things happen.

“We’ll try to do all we can so no one gets it but sometimes it doesn’t depend solely on ourselves.”

According to reports, Messi is not believed to have been vaccinated.

Brazil won the tournament two years ago, beating Argentina in the semi-final in a controversial match, and Messi said he was desperate to finally replicate his club success at the international level.

“I think this is the time to strike a blow and the chance could come in this Copa America,” said the Barcelona forward and six-time winner of the Ballon d’Or for best player in the world.

“My big dream is to win a title with the national team. I was very close on many occasions and unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I will keep going until I can’t anymore.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to win everything at a club level and on an individual level and it would be beautiful to win with the national team as well.”

Cristiano Ronaldo responds to transfer rumours after being linked with Manchester United and PSG

Cristiano Ronaldo has addressed the speculation surrounding his future amid links with a return to Manchester United and a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Last month, reports claimed that the 36-year-old is seriously considering a move back to Old Trafford, while Juventus are open to offloading the Portuguese forward.

Paris Saint-Germain are also linked with a move for Ronaldo with reports in Spain claiming that the French club have opened talks over a £25m deal.

Speaking with journalists on the eve of Portugal’s opening fixture with Hungary on Tuesday, the 36-year-old said: ‘I have been playing at the highest level for many years this doesn’t faze me, maybe if I was 18 or 19 I might have had some sleepless nights, but I’m 36,’ Ronaldo said at a press conference on Monday.

‘It’s like I say, whatever comes, it will be for good. Regardless of whether you stay or leave, that’s not the most important right now.

‘The most important thing is to focus on the national team, a competition of this magnitude is not played every day, I’m going to play the fifth European but in my mind it’s like the first.

‘I want to start on the right foot, I want to win, I want to play well and I want to have positive thoughts, from the beginning to the end of the competition.’

Ronaldo also stressed that he is still comfortable playing in various positions for Portugal.

‘I feel comfortable playing up front, as always,’ said Ronaldo.

‘Left, right, front, back, wherever it’s best to help the team win.

‘That’s the most important thing, regardless of the fact that I play in the position that I like the most. Any position suits me. The important thing is to win and help the national team.’

Saudi Arabia executed a man after offensive photo was found on his phone

A 26-year-old man in Saudi Arabia has reportedly been put to death after an ‘offensive’ photograph was found on his phone following anti-government protests he took part in at the age of 17.

The young man identified as Mustafa al-Darwish was executed despite promises from the desert kingdom that the death penalty would no longer apply for offences committed when defendants were children, according to Daily Mail.

At the age of 17, Mustafa was reportedly been caught up in Arab Spring protests among the country’s Shi’ite minority which swept through the Eastern Province region in 2011 and 2012.

Three years later, in 2015, he was arrested and accused of a range of offences such as ‘seeking to disrupt national cohesion through participation in more than 10 riots’.

Man, 26,

The then 20-year-old was released without charge, his family said, but police confiscated his phone and found a photograph that offended them.

Mustafa was then placed in solitary confinement and his family said he lost consciousness several times during brutal interrogation sessions.

He later said he confessed to the crimes under torture and recanted them in court saying he had only admitted to the offences to make the beatings stop, according to his family.

Following his conviction, he spent six years on Death Row before being executed on Tuesday.

His family, who only discovered he had been put to death after reading a news report online, said: ‘Six years ago, Mustafa was arrested with two of his friends in the streets of Tarout. The police released him without charge but confiscated his phone. We later found that there was a photograph on the phone that offended them.’

‘Later they called us and told Mustafa to come and collect his phone, but instead of giving it back they detained him and our suffering began. How can they execute a boy because of a photograph on his phone? Since his arrest we have known nothing but pain. It is a living death for the whole family.’

At his subsequent trial, the charge sheet made specific reference to a ‘photograph that was offensive to the security services’.

Over the past five years, Saudi Arabia has made repeated pledges not to execute anyone for offences committed when they were children.

There was an outcry when, despite the promises, six young such men formed part of a mass execution that saw 37 people put to death on April 23rd, 2019.

In April 2020 the Saudi Human Rights Commission announced a Royal Decree extending the Juvenile Law and later insisted that ‘no one in Saudi Arabia will be executed for a crime committed as a minor’.

In February 2021, the Riyadh authorities told the UN Human Rights Council that ‘anyone who commits a death-eligible crime as a child’ will be subject to ‘a maximum sentence of ten years in a juvenile institution’.

With  Mustafa’s execution, campaigners fear that other youngsters, including one who was just 14 at the time of his alleged crimes, could also die.

Reprieve Director Maya Foa said: ‘It is not enough for Saudi Arabia’s partners to ‘raise human rights issues’, as British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab reportedly did on his recent visit to the Kingdom.

‘They need to raise specific cases, and make clear that executions for childhood crimes will not be tolerated. Otherwise Abdullah al-Howaiti, arrested aged 14 and sentenced to death at 17, could be next’.

Nigeria lost billions of Naira due to Twitter ban

Nigeria has lost N24.72bn in 10 days due to the Twitter ban imposed by the Federal government.

The Federal government on June 5 placed an indefinite suspension of the operations of the microblogging app in Nigeria after the site took down a tweet posted on the President’s handle.

The Federal government last week said the microblogging site has since reached out for discussions and that the Federal government will now give operating licence to such sites if they want to operate in Nigeria.

According to NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, an international Internet monitor, Nigeria loses N102.9m ($250,600) every hour to the ban.

The digital rights advocacy platform estimates the economic impact of an internet disruption, mobile data blackout or app restriction using indicators from the World Bank, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Eurostat amongst others. According to its analysis, an estimated N2.1 billion naira was lost when Nigeria shut down Twitter for 24 hours.

According to a report by Statista, Nigeria has about 33 million active social media users with about 26 per cent on Twitter.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, Ayoola Olukanni, while commenting on the ban, said it has a more adverse effect on micro, small and medium businesses who rely on social media to conduct their business.

“Communication is a significant part of sales and marketing in this digital age.  Consequently, the Twitter ban will likely impact negatively and disrupt businesses especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises who rely on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram including Twitter to conduct business.

It will therefore most likely negatively impact the IT sector of the economy which is already facing several other challenges.

While it may be considered that there are alternative social media platforms, the abrupt nature of the suspension would mean a loss of existing contacts and a cost of migration.

We must of course also not and cannot, discountenance the national security dimension of the misuse of social media and micro-blogging platforms to inspire violence outside its use to conduct Business.”Olukanni said

Meghan Markle becomes the most ‘respected royal’ in the world

Meghan Markle has been named “the most popular royal” ahead of Kate Middleton in a new study.

A new poll conducted by youth health charity stem4 analysed the interest in a number of celebrities and public figures, including musicians, online creators, sports people and public figures.

Data on members of the Royal Family was collected to show who was deemed the most respected.

Meghan garnered 21% of the vote, making her far more popular with the 1,032 people polled than Kate Middleton, who garnered just 11%.

The study surveyed 1032 people between the ages of 13 and 25.

Meghan was praised for her “bravery and resilience” and for carrying on “even when things go wrong”.

Prince Harry and Prince William also made the list with 21 percent and 11 percent respectively.

Those who took part in the study also named other celebrities who they look up to.

Marcus Rashford, Lewis Hamilton and Raheem Sterling were the most admired sports people.

David Attenborough, Captain Tom Moore and Greta Thunberg were deemed the most inspiring people.

Founder and CEO at stem4 Dr Nihara Krause said: “To earn the respect of young people today you don’t need to earn a fortune or have good looks.

“It’s far more important that you show bravery, resilience, and compassion for others and for nature.

“Those are certainly qualities the Queen shares with some of the other names on this list such as David Attenborough and Marcus Rashford.

“It’s also significant that many of the most admired famous people are those, like Billie Eilish and Prince Harry, who have been open about their own mental health challenges.”

NATO warns China’s military ambitions threaten global peace

Transatlantic security alliance, NATO for the first time has warnes China in its communique following it’s summit in Brussels on Monday, June 14.

NATO confronted China’s military ambitions for the first time, saying Beijing presents “systemic challenges” for the transatlantic security alliance.

NATO warns China?s military ambitions threaten global order

The communique marks a diplomatic victory for US President Joe Biden, who had urged the 30-member strong alliance to stand up to China’s burgeoning military, political and economic might.

The language by the alliance will now set the path for alliance policy and comes a day after the G7 nations slammed China in a statement, calling the country out for it’s alleged human rights abuses in China and Hong Kong.

“China’s stated ambitions and assertive behaviour present systemic challenges to the rules-based international order and to areas relevant to alliance security,” NATO’s 79-point communique said.

It accused Beijing of “rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal” and being “opaque in implementing its military modernisation”, as well as highlighting China’s military cooperation with Russia in exercises in the Euro-Atlantic region as a concern.

“We call on China to uphold its international commitments and to act responsibly in the international system, including in the space, cyber, and maritime domains, in keeping with its role as a major power,” the communique said.

Addressing reporters following the summit, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said there was a “strong convergence of views among allies” regarding the challenges posed by Beijing’s behaviour.

“Leaders agreed that we need to address such challenges as an alliance and that we need to engage with China to defend our security interests,” he said.

Biden said the alliance’s mutual defence pact was a “sacred obligation” for the US a marked shift in tone from his predecessor Donald Trump, who had threatened to withdraw from the alliance and accused Europeans of contributing too little to their own defence.

“I want all Europe to know that the United States is there,” said Biden. “NATO is critically important to us.”

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, who attended her last summit of the alliance before she steps down in September, described Biden’s arrival as the opening of a new chapter. She also said it was important to deal with China as a potential threat.

“If you look at the cyber threats and the hybrid threats, if you look at the cooperation between Russia and China, you cannot simply ignore China,” Merkel told reporters.

“But one must not overrate it, either – we need to find the right balance.”

Biden said both Russia and China were not acting “in a way that is consistent with what we had hoped”.

UEFA looks into Marko Arnautovic’s alleged racist outburst against North Macedonia

UEFA has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate Austria striker Marko Arnautovic’s reaction to his goal against North Macedonia.

The former West Ham striker, who is currently playing his football in China with Shanghai Port, was restrained by skipper David Alaba as he gestured angrily after scoring late in Sunday’s 3-1 Group C victory in Romania.

He allegedly made a racial slur following his late strike, saying ‘I’m f***ing your Albanian mother’ in the direction of Ezgjan Alioski, according to Koha.

A UEFA statement said: “In accordance with the Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding the incident involving the player Marko Arnautovi? that occurred during the 2020 European Championship group-stage match between the national teams of Austria and North Macedonia on 13 June 2021.

“Further information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

The incident came in the 89th minute of the game after Arnautovic scored and appeared to make comments towards opposition players and then turned towards spectators.

Reports have alleged his initial remarks were aimed at defender Egzon Bejtulai and Gjanni Alioski, who both have Albanian roots.

The reason for the slur appears to relate to the Kosovo War, in which Serbia and Albania came into conflict over the Kosovo region.

Arnautovic later apologised for his outburst, but insisted he was not a racist.

In a post on his official Instagram account, he wrote: ‘There were some heated words yesterday in the emotions of the game for which I would like to apologise – especially to my friends from North Macedonia and Albania.

‘I would like to say one thing very clearly: I am not a racist. I have friends in almost every country and I stand for diversity. Everyone who knows me is aware of that.’

UEFA open investigation into Marko Arnautovic

UEFA introduced a 10-match ban for discrimination in 2013 and it is the minimum punishment that the organisation’s control, ethics and disciplinary body can issue for racist behaviour.

If found guilty, Arnautovic would miss all of Austria’s remaining participation in this tournament, and his absence would extend into the club’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

‘People have been threatening to kill me’ – EFCC Boss

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has said that he’s been receiving death threats since he was appointed chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Bawa disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily.

He recalled how someone who isn’t investigated by the agency, threatened to kill him. The EFCC Chairman said;

“Last week I was in New York. A very senior citizen received a phone call from somebody who is not even under EFCC investigation. What he said to him is that I am going to kill the EFCC boss, the young man.

“This to tell you how real corruption can fight back. Yes because if you look at it, almost everywhere there are elements of it (corruption), but I am very optimistic we will succeed in taming the monster of corruption in this country.”

Bawa also revealed that the commission is expending energy on how to crack down on the gatekeepers of the proceeds of corruption in the country.

He said;

“Our attention is geared toward dealing with the issue of the utilization of funds whether in the private or public sector. We are looking at the avenue in which they are laundering the proceeds.

“We are looking forward to dealing with what we call gatekeepers in money laundering to have rigorous and effective control over them.”

He added that since Nigerians are very religious, the commission has designed a manual to engage religious bodies.

The EFCC Chairman said;

“Nigeria is a very religious country and that is why one of the issues that we do in public enlightenment is to engage with leaders of religious bodies.

“We are soon going to launch our interface with the Christian and Islamic communities to engage them on the ills of corruption.

“We have already designed the manual for that.”

See massive penis statue erected in Thailand village to bring forth rain

Villagers in Yothaka, in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province, ended a period of drought by building a giant erect penis statue.

Farmers in the area had been concerned that there hadn’t been enough rain recently and that water from irrigation canals was too salty and had been damaging crops.

To call forth the rain, a giant penis statue, or “Palad Khik”, was erected on Jun 9.

This week. local village headman, Chamnan Kenthongdaeng, 52, told a press conference that on June 11, just two days after the giant penis was installed it had started raining, with a shower that lasted about half an hour.

Koson Samang, the headman of a nearby village, had made a video of the rain as proof.

However, local farmers complained that the brief shower hadn’t been long enough to irrigate their fields.

Chamnan 52, promised that prayers to the phallus will continue.

He told Pattaya News that erecting a Palad Khik, representing fertility and new growth, was a local tradition going back decades, to the time of his grandparents.

Chamnan said that the giant penis, built in the middle of the road, wouldn’t cause any problems with traffic, because it was built on a cul-de-sac.

“It will be removed as soon as the seasonal rain comes,” he promised.

A Nigerian man has been arrested in Malaysia for allegedly conning a 49-year-old woman out of her RM78,000 (N7,825,021.75) savings.

State Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Superintendent E Sundra Rajan in a statement on Tuesday, June 15, said the 38-year-old suspect was arrested during a raid at a condominium in Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, June 13.

He said the suspect was believed to be involved in Love Scam activities and had used the name Mahmudin Jafaardi on Facebook.

“Investigations found that the suspect is believed to be carrying out the activity along with other criminal associates and efforts to track down the other individuals are underway,” he stated.

Joe Biden suffering from Dementia? mixing up “Libya” for “Syria” (video)

US President, Joe Biden fumbled during a press conference at the G-7 summit on Sunday, June 13, mixing up “Libya” for “Syria” – not once, but three times – while discussing humanitarian aid to countries torn apart by civil war.

Biden, who is gaffe-prone, was discussing working with Russia in providing “vital assistance” to “Libya” – a “population that’s in real trouble.”

He then said that Russia had bitten off more than it can chew with its intervention in “Syria,” but then added “Libya” to the mix.

“As long as they’re there without the ability to bring about some order in the region, you can’t do that very well without providing for the basic economic needs of people,” Biden said.

“So, I’m hopeful that we can find an accommodation where we can save the lives of people in, for example, in Libya.”

Russia is prepared to extradite cyber criminals to US if only America does the same – Putin

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has said Russia is prepared to extradite cyber criminals to the United States on a reciprocal basis.

According to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency on Sunday June 13, Putin said that both Russia and the US must “assume equal commitments,” adding that “Russia will naturally do that but only if the other side, in this case the United States, agrees to the same and will also extradite corresponding criminals to the Russian Federation.”

Putin’s remarks come ahead of a June 16 summit with US President Joe Biden in Geneva. Biden said Sunday at a G7 press conference he was encouraged by Putin’s earlier comments and acknowledged negotiation is possible.

During his interview with Rossiya-1, the Russian President said he hoped his meeting with Biden would serve to restore relations between Russia and the United States and establish a “functioning mechanism” for direct dialogue on “areas of mutual interest,” including regional conflicts, economic cooperation and environmental protection, TASS reported.

“In general, there is something to talk about and there are common issues to discuss,” the Russian President added.

During a press briefing last week Wednesday, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that the “issue of ransomware attacks” would be discussed during the meeting between the two leaders in Geneva.

“We have raised the issue of ransomware attacks with any number of countries and that includes Russia. I suspect, as you have heard from the White House, that this activity will be a topic when the two presidents meet next week in Geneva,” Price said.

China accuses the G7 group of ‘political manipulation’

China has accused the G7 of “political manipulation” after it criticised Beijing over a range of issues.

In a joint statement at the end of a three-day summit, leaders of the G7 countries made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, urged China to “respect human rights and fundamental freedoms” while also highlighting abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority group and the crackdown on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists.

China has detained as many as a million Uyghurs and other Muslims and imprisoned hundreds of thousands more in its crackdown in Xinjiang, which began in 2017. There have been widespread reports of physical and psychological torture inside prisons and detention camps in the region. China denies the allegations.

Reacting, China’s embassy in the UK accused the G7 of “baseless accusations”.

“Stop slandering China, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs, and stop harming China’s interests,” a Chinese spokesman said on Monday, June 14.

The Chinese embassy in the UK  opposed the the mentions of Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan, saying it distorted the facts and exposed the “sinister intentions of a few countries such as the United States”.

The G7 also called for Hong Kong to retain “a high degree of autonomy”, underscored the “importance of peace and stability” across the Taiwan Strait – a heavily-policed waterway that separates China and Taiwan – and demanded a new investigation in China into the origins of Covid-19.

US President Joe Biden said he was “satisfied” with the statement’s language on China.

Denrele Edun recounts how he once dated a man, a decision he regrets till today (video)

Media personality, Denrele Edun, turns 40 today June 13. Ahead of his birthday, he spoke with Chude Jideonwo about his life journey and revealed that he had once dated a man.

According to Denrele, the experience was the worst in his life and the man in question was very toxic to him all through the period they saw each other.

In his words

”I have not been in too many relationships which is why I am always very skeptical about getting into them. So one day I said to myself, maybe the girls do not have anything to offer me and then I had quite a bit of  male attention, so I said let me just give somebody a chance. That was the worse decision of my life.

From then on, I have said I am my own sugardaddy. I have a strong masculine side designed to take care of my feminine side because the person I decided to experiment with was the most draining thing I had ever done in my life and I am never going to be caught in that sought of situation.

I met the most disrespectful, most disregarding, the temper I had not seen. I tried to quell it. I said Okay so God, maybe you sent this man into my life because you wanted me to change this person, maybe you wanted me to fix it”he said

Denrele said he somehow got his reality check and got out of the relationship after months of people telling him it was toxic for him.

G7 Countries pledge to end diesel and fuel consumption by 2030

The group of G7 countries have agreed on a plan to end reliance on fuel and diesel-powered cars by 2030.

As part of a comprehensive Green Belt and Road Initiative aimed at providing developing countries with billions of dollars in aids and investments required to curb carbon emissions, the G7 countries also see this initiative as an alternative to China’s belt and road initiative which China has promoted in Africa and developing countries.

According to a report published by the British Government, the G7 nations want to consent to a “nature Compact” that will “halt and reverse: biodiversity loss by 2030. The plan includes conserving or protecting 30% of more of land and ocean respectively globally by the end of 2030.

“The G7 will endorse a Nature Compact at this afternoon’s meeting to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 – including supporting the global target to conserve or protect at least 30 percent of land and 30 percent of ocean globally by the end of the decade.”

The group also agreed to start action plans required to slash carbon emissions which include ending government support for the fossil fuel energy sector overseas and phasing out petrol and diesel cars.

“Leaders will set out the action they will take to slash carbon emissions, including measures like ending all unabated coal as soon as possible, ending almost all direct government support for the fossil fuel energy sector overseas and phasing out petrol and diesel cars.” –  UK Government

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“Protecting our planet is the most important thing we as leaders can do for our people. There is a direct relationship between reducing emissions, restoring nature, creating jobs and ensuring long-term economic growth.

“As democratic nations we have a responsibility to help developing countries reap the benefits of clean growth through a fair and transparent system. The G7 has an unprecedented opportunity to drive a global Green Industrial Revolution, with the potential to transform the way we live.”

The G7 are also expected to commit to almost halve their emissions by 2030 relative to 2010. The UK is already going even further, pledging to cut emissions by at least 68% by 2030 on 1990 levels (58% reduction on 2010 levels).

The United States Government also confirmed comments by the UK stating an end in direct support for thermal coal power generation.

“Accelerating Decarbonization and Transition from Unabated Coal: Confronting the climate crisis presents a historic opportunity to drive our economic recovery, create millions of good-paying union jobs, and build back better as we invest in a more resilient, prosperous, equitable, and secure future.

“Recognizing that unabated coal power generation is the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions globally, and consistent with President Biden’s domestic leadership, G7 Leaders will commit to an end to new direct government support for unabated international thermal coal power generation by the end of this year.”

This new agreement is a direct threat to Nigeria’s economic future as the Nigerian Government relies on crude oil export for over 50% of its revenues

Man kills his fiancée ‘with axe’ few days before their wedding, disfiguring her face

A man has killed his fiancée by hitting her with an object in 83 separate blows shortly before their wedding.

Russian travel agent Alexander Voronin, 26, son of a senior ex-KGB security service officer, left horrific wounds on Marina Pankratova, 26.

Pankratova was found semi-naked in bed following the three-hour attack by Voronin.

Voronin’s mother was the one who found her.

According to evidence presented to a Moscow court, the bride’s face was severely disfigured and her skull fractured by an unidentified object, possibly a chair leg or the blunt head of an axe.

Her torso and limbs were covered in wounds, some caused by punches and kicking.

Man kills his fianc?e

After killing his fiancée, Voronin, who owned a car rental company and travel agency, tried to flee abroad but was stopped due to pandemic travel restrictions.

He was held in a Moscow park after his father Nikolay persuaded him to give himself up.

Voronin had been seen leaving the flat he shared with his fiancée soon after she was killed.

State investigators spoke to five former girlfriends who all reported that Voronin had been abusive.

He tied up one woman and threatened to throw her child out of the window.

The accused’s father insisted his son was not the killer.

“Pay attention to the fact that most of the hits were made by a right-handed person, and Alexander is left-handed,” he said.

“I think at least two men had committed the act.”

In court, Voronin had said: “I do not remember anything”.

But the court heard a CCTV camera caught him beating the woman as they walked home.

And no one else was seen entering the flat.

Relatives say the couple had dated a long time after meeting at work.

A friend said Marina had recently complained about domestic violence to the police, but later withdrew the claim and agreed to marry Voronin.

Vornonin, who maintained his innocence at the trial, was sentenced to fourteen-and-a-half years in prison.

NDLEA intercepts 100,000 bottles of codeine syrup at Onne Port

A statement released by Femi Babafemi, spokesperson of the command, states that the illicit substance, cough syrup with codeine (100mg), packed in 500 cartons and concealed in a container marked MRKU 1565305, bearing imported food masks made in India, was discovered on Thursday, 10th June 2021 in a warehouse at the Onne port complex during a joint examination with officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, State Security Service, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, among others.

He said the seizure followed an intelligence received by NDLEA, as a result of which the container was put on hold and moved to the Customs Government warehouse within the port complex. No importer or agent has however come forward in respect of the container but efforts are ongoing to track the owner for further investigation and prosecution.

In a related development, NDLEA operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, NAIA, have seized nine cartons of khat, weighing 146.95kilograms at the cargo wing of the airport. The consignment packaged as dried green tea was shipped from Addis Ababa, on board Ethiopian airline flight ET911.

”After initial examination and suspicion, a clearing agent was asked to report with the consignee before the release but failed to do so for fear of arrest, a development that led to a laboratory test on the consignment, which tested positive to khat and the eventual seizure.”the statement read

The Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has hailed the synergy among various government agencies at the Onne port and charged them not to rest on their oars as they daily work hard to keep Nigeria safe. He particularly commended the Commander, officers and men of the Port Harcourt Port Command and their Abuja airport Command counterparts for their vigilance and commitment to the task of ridding Nigeria of illicit drugs.

”The damage 100,000 bottles of codeine would have done to our youths if they had slipped through the port to our villages, towns and cities is unimaginable. 146.95 kilograms of khat could have done the same damage if allowed to go into our streets. We will continue to motivate our officers and men so that they can give their best in the discharge of their responsibilities across the country and ultimately with the support of all our stakeholders and partners, we will win the battle against illicit drug trafficking and abuse” Gen. Marwa said

Young Nigerian Woman killed by her Ghanaian Ex-boyfriend in Italy

Carabinieri police in Milan, Italy has arrested a 34-year-old Ghanaian man, George Kyeremeh, for allegedly killing his 25-year-old Nigerian ex girlfriend identified as Blessing Tunde.

The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Friday, June 11, by the homicide team of Carabinieri police.

An autopsy conducted on the victim indicated she had been strangled with the long braids of the wig she used to wear which were found wrapped around her neck.

She was earlier reported missing by her friend to the Novara police headquarters. The friend told the police that she last heard from Blessing on the phone around 1 pm on May 3 and she had said she was in Rho. However, all attempts to get in touch with her afterwards proved abortive.

It was gathered Blessing in mid-April had broken up with the suspect after a year-long romantic relationship.

Friends and roommates described the Ghanaian as a jealous lover and both constantly quarrelled over other men in her life.

It was further learnt that after the breakup Geoerge tried to convince Blessing to come back to him, calling her several times between April 13 and May 3 and asking her friend to intercede for him.

A report by LaRepubblica claimed that the Nigerian woman was a commercial sex worker and was four months pregnant.

Milan Carabinieri police have placed the man in preventive custody at the order of preliminary investigations judge (GIP) Angela Laura Minerva.

Israel Adesanya defeats Marvin Vettori, regains title

Israel Adesanya has retained his middleweight championship title after defeating rival Marvin Vettori at UFC 263 on Saturday June 12.

In their first meeting three years ago, Adesanya defeated Vettori by split decision. His opponent however insisted that he won the 2018 fight and never stopped calling for a rematch.

In the rematch, the result was far more definitive; Adesanya showed off his improvement in defending takedowns while also carving up his opponent with pinpoint striking. Vettori had only a few successful moments in the fight, scoring with a handful of takedown.

In the end, Adesanya took every round on all three official scorecards, winning by scores of 50-45 across the board. Adesanya has now successfully defended the 185-pound championship three times and rebounded from a loss in his previous fight, an attempt to become a two-division champion when he went to light heavyweight to face 205-pound champion Jan Blachowicz.

After his victory, Adesanya called for a rematch with Robert Whittaker, the man he defeated to become champion. He said;

“Whittaker, my arch-nemesis, Bobby. I don’t know what the f— is gonna happen with COVID. We need to run that back in Auckland, in my territory this time. I’ll tell you what it is, I get to decide, you don’t get to decide, because why? I’m the motherf—ing king, bitch.”

Prior to the fight with Vettori, Adesanya had shared a screenshot of a message he got from his opponent’s fan. The fan was hurling racial slurs at him, ahead of the fight with the Italian fighter.

Christian Eriksen may not play football again – Cardiologist says

Danish player, Christian Eriksen is unlikely to play again after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Euro 2020 tournament during Saturday’s Group B clash between Denmark and Finland on Saturday evening, June 12.

LIB reported how Eriksen, 29, fell to the ground in shocking scenes at the Parken Stadium, soon before half-time and was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

The first-round match was suspended with players from both sides in clear distress before resuming some two hours later after Eriksen was said to be in a stable condition.

?Christian Eriksen unlikely to play football again? ? Cardiologist says after player

Now, cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma, who previously worked with Eriksen at Tottenham Hotspur, says he doubts the player will continue playing football.

Sharma, professor of sports cardiology at London’s St George’s University, said football bodies and medical practitioners were likely to be “very strict” about allowing Eriksen to play again.

Sharma said: “Clearly something went terribly wrong.

“But they managed to get him back, the question is what happened? And why did it happen?

“This guy had normal tests all the way up to 2019 so how do you explain this cardiac arrest?”

Sharma, who chairs the English FA’s expert cardiac consensus group, said there were multiple reasons a cardiac arrest could have happened, such as high temperatures or an unidentified condition.

But he said reports after the match that Eriksen was awake in hospital were “a very good sign”.

“I’m very pleased. The fact he’s stable and awake, his outlook is going to be very good,” he told the PA news agency.

“I don’t know whether he’ll ever play football again.

“Without putting it too bluntly, he died today, albeit for a few minutes, but he did die and would the medical professional allow him to die again? The answer is no.”

He added: “The good news is he will live, the bad news is he was coming to the end of his career, so would he play another professional football game, that I can’t say.

“In the UK he wouldn’t play. We’d be very strict about it.”

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand struggled to hold back tears during his post-match press conference and revealed his side had the choice of finishing the Group B opener on the night or returning on Sunday June 13.

“It was more unmanageable to have to restart tomorrow. It was more unmanageable than going back out now and getting it all put behind us,” he said.

“I could not be more proud of this team, who take good care of each other.

“There are players in there who are completely finished emotionally. Players who on another day could not play this match. They are supporting each other. It was a traumatic experience.”

South Africa Govt. expels Malawi diplomats over alcohol scandal

Several Malawian diplomats have been declared “persona non grata” by the South African government after being found guilty of peddling duty-free alcohol.

Malawi’s foreign affairs ministry in Lilongwe confirmed that South Africa had given the diplomats and their families 72 hours to leave the country.

South Africa’s ministry of international relations said the decision was taken because the diplomats “were found guilty of engaging in illicit trade in duty-free alcohol” following an intensive investigation into their flouting of diplomatic privileges.

Pretoria further revealed investigations into similar transgressions by other missions accredited to South Africa were “at an advanced stage and similar action will be taken should they be found guilty”.

The statement read;

“The said diplomats were found guilty of engaging in illicit trade in duty-free alcohol. This decision was taken in line with the Vienna Convention of 1961. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 is fundamental to the conduct of foreign relations and ensures that diplomats can conduct their duties without the threat of influence by the host government.

“However, in instances where such privileges are abused, the host country is obliged to take the necessary action in line with the convention. To this end, the SA government has given the affected diplomatic staff members and their families 72 hours within which they should leave SA. They are expected to relinquish their diplomatic status by returning all the necessary diplomatic tools to the Dirco.

“Investigations of similar transgressions by other missions accredited to SA are at an advanced stage and similar action will be taken should they be found guilty. Accordingly, the SA government calls upon all diplomatic missions accredited to the republic to respect, uphold and comply with all laws of the land, including adherence with prescripts of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.”

Several diplomats from Lesotho were expelled from South Africa on Thursday June 10, on similar grounds. South African media had reported that cash-strapped Lesotho diplomats have been bringing alcohol into the country without paying duty, and then re-selling it in bars and restaurants.

The ‘second-highest-paid’ Football Player with £350,000 per week pay is Jadon Sancho from Manchester United

Borussia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho is set to be one of the Premier League’s highest earners should his impending move to Manchester United be completed this summer.

Manchester United recently agreed on personal terms with Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho over a move to Old Trafford this summer. But the clubs remain at loggerheads over a fee for Sancho with the German giants rejecting a £67million bid on Thursday, as they demand £80m to part ways with their No 7.

Despite this setback, the 21-year-old is set to be handed a five-year deal worth around £350,000-a-week, according to the Guardian.

The England international would become the second-highest earner at the club – just next to goalkeeper David de Gea’s £375,000-a-week deal.

In fact, Sancho’s bumper contract would see him move into the top five highest earners in the English top-flight – joining De Gea, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£350,000), and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling (£300,000). Sterling’s team-mate, Kevin De Bruyne rounds the list having signed improved terms on his old £300,000-a-week deal back in April.

A Professional Lobster Diver survives after being ‘eaten alive’ by a humpback whale

A professional lobster diver who was swallowed by a humpback whale off the coast of Cape Cod, survived the scary incident after the mammal spat him back out.

Michael Packard, 56, was about 45 feet deep in the waters off Provincetown on Friday, June 11, when he “felt a huge bump, and everything went dark”.

According to him, he thought he had been attacked by a shark but later realized that he could not feel any teeth and he was not in any pain.

“All of a sudden, I felt this huge shove and the next thing I knew it was completely black,” Packard recalled Friday afternoon following his release from Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. “I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth.”

“I was completely inside; it was completely black,” Packard said. “I thought to myself, ‘there’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m done, I’m dead.’ All I could think of was my boys — they’re 12 and 15 years old.”

Mr.Michael said he believes he was in the whale’s mouth for about 30 seconds but continued to breathe because he still had his breathing apparatus in.

Luckily for him, the whale shook its head and spat him out before it he was rescued by his crewmate in the surface boat.

“I saw light, and he started throwing his head side to side, and the next thing I knew I was outside (in the water),” said Packard, who lives in Wellfleet.

His sister, Cynthia Packard, originally told the Cape Cod Times that her brother broke a leg, but he said later that his legs are just bruised.

Charles “Stormy” Mayo, a senior scientist and whale expert at the Centre for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, told the newspaper that such human-whale encounters are unusual.

Humpbacks are not aggressive and Dr. Mayo speculated it was an accidental encounter while the whale was feeding on fish, likely sand lance.

Humpback whales can weigh about 36 tons and grow to as long as 50ft (15m).

TIME magazine criticized for making Joe Biden ‘look cool’ and tough on its cover ahead of Putin meeting

TIME magazine has been mocked online after the paper unveiled its upcoming cover image on Friday, June 11.

The magazine cover shows a sunglasses-wearing US President Biden, and comes ahead of the upcoming summit between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva on June 16.

The illustration features Biden in his signature aviator shades with the headline, “Taking on Putin.”

TIME magazine consecutively published unflattering illustrations of former President Donald Trump, complete with a pair of covers showing his “meltdown” stages and another set of covers showing Trump’s Oval Office filling up with water amid a “stormy” situation.

During Trump’s time the magazine even edited Trump and Putin together ahead of their summit back in 2018. Now that Biden is in office, readers have taken notice of the magazine attempting to make Biden look tough.

TIME magazine blasted for exaggerated attempt to make Joe Biden ?look cool? and tough on its cover ahead of Putin meeting

“This cover attempts to make Joe Biden look cool, but even in their flattering depiction of his face — a drawing because he would look incredibly elderly and weak in a current high-def pic — he has his typical gaping mouth that makes him look clueless and afraid of Putin who is staring him down with a confident smirk,” political satirist Tim Young reacted on Twitter.

“I can’t help but remember the cover of TIME where their editors pushed a lie by editing a Honduran child they claimed to have been separated from her parents by Trump on the cover with Trump – it turned out the child hadn’t been separated at all, but that image had been used to ruin Trump, which was their entire biased game for four years,” Young said.

Former acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Richard Grenell added;

“Giving him a pipeline of leverage into Europe is NOT taking him on. It’s giving in,” .

National Review’s Kyle Smith said;, “DNC press releases aren’t this sycophantic.”

“Wonder why there was no such ‘Trump takes out Soleimani’ cover,” one reader pondered.

Dr. Dre is now ready to mingle after a judge restored his single status amid his ongoing divorce.

The Hip Hop mogul has been fighting his ex-wife Nicole Young ever since she filed for divorce in July 2020.

According to court documents obtained by Radar, in March, Dre asked the court to restore his single status legally. He said there was no hope for a reconciliation, and he wanted to move on with his life.

This week, the judge presiding over Dre’s divorce granted his motion. As a result, the billionaire can tell others he is legally single. The battle with his ex is far from over as they are yet to figure out a settlement over their property and assets

In Nicole’s divorce petition, she said they did not have a valid prenuptial agreement. She claimed her then-husband decided to rip up the one they signed a couple of years in their marriage. She also accused Dre of having three different mistresses named Crystal Rodgers aka Crystal Sierra, Kili Anderson, and Jillian Speer.

In the months since his split, Dre has been spotted on dates with Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Apryl Jones.

Kim Jong-Un threatens anyone listening to the South Korean pop culture, with 15 years in a /prison labour camp

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un has described the South Korean pop culture, as a ‘vicious cancer’ corrupting young North Koreans’ “attire, hairstyles, speeches, behaviors.”

That has now prompted him to introduced harsher punishments for anyone caught listening to K-pop or watching dramas from the South after his state media warned that if left unchecked, it would make North Korea “crumble like a damp wall.”

The decision comes as South Korean music, television shows, and movies are enjoying unprecedented popularity around the world.

The New York Times reported that state media has slammed the spread of ‘anti-socialist’ influence – particularly through South Korean movies, K-dramas and K-pop music videos – on a near-daily basis in recent months.

Kim has ordered his government to clamp down on the cultural invasion, which he said is corrupting the ‘attire, hairstyles, speeches, behaviours’ of North Korea’s youth, the paper reported.

In December, the Communist state brought in a new law that could see anyone caught watching or possessing South Korean entertainment sentenced to 15 years in a labour camp. Previously, the maximum punishment was five years of hard labour.

Those smuggling the content into North Korea could face even harsher punishments, including the death penalty.

The legislation also calls for people who ‘speak, write or sing in South Korean style’ to face up to two years of hard labour.

The moves by the secretive state came to light through Seoul lawmakers briefed by intelligence officials, and internal documents smuggled out of North Korea by the Seoul-based Daily NK news website, the Times said.

Despite a shared ethnicity and language, patterns of speech and accents in South Korea vary considerably from the North.

But phrases picked up from K-dramas have begun creeping in, with women in North Korea sometimes opting to call their boyfriends ‘oppa’ – a term used in the South that is similar to ‘honey’ in this context – rather than the approved ‘comrade’,’ The New York Times reported.

Citing North Korean government documents smuggled out by Asia Press International – a Japan-based website monitoring North Korea, the paper said that computers, text messages, and notebooks are being searched for South Korean content and vocabulary.

Families of those found to be ‘imitating the puppet accent’ from the South could be expelled from cities, the documents warned.

Kim is reported to have warned that ‘a serious change’ was underway in the ‘ideological and mental state’ of young North Koreans.

He adds: “I’d love to talk to her. I’ve made mistakes. I apologised a hundred times for it.

Meghan Markle

Buhari unveils plans to recruit 10,000 police officers

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced his government’s plan to recruit 10,000 new police officers to boost national security.

The President disclosed this on Thursday June 10, while delivering a speech in Lagos on his one-day visit for the inauguration of various  projects.

Buhari said;

“We are currently recruiting 10,000 new police officers to reinforce our personnel capacity across the country.

“I have directed the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to carry out an upward review of Police salaries and benefits”.

The President also maintained that no government since 1999 has been as committed as his administration in reforming and repositioning the Nigeria Police Force and national policing architecture.

Buhari added;

“In 2019, I signed into law the Act establishing the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, the first in the history of the Force, to provide guaranteed funding to support Police welfare, logistics and equipment.

“In September 2020, I assented to the bill amending the Nigeria Police Act, which was originally enacted in 1943.

“This new Act, a vast improvement over the old one, among other things spells out the modalities for the implementation of a National Community Policing Scheme in Nigeria.

“This new scheme will build confidence within our local communities and make them active stakeholders in the safety and security of their environs.”

Central African Republic Prime Minister resigns

Firmin Ngrebada, Prime Minister of the Central African Republic on Thursday June 10 announced that his government had tendered its resignation.

The development also comes amid a turbulent week in Bangui after the French military announced it was suspending military operations with Central African Republic.

Ngrebada tweeted;

“I have just handed over to His Excellency the President of the Republic His Excellency Pr Faustin Archange Touadera my resignation and that of the government.”

Presidential spokesman, Albert Yaloke Mokpeme however told AFP that he may be asked to stay and form a new government.

Mokpeme said;

“We will know within a few hours if the president keeps the prime minister on.”

A former chief of staff to Touadera, Ngrebada had been in post since early 2019. Critics had been calling for Ngrebada’s ouster since March, when President Faustin Touadera was sworn in for another five-year term. Some raised concern about the prime minister’s apparent ties to Russia, whose influence in the former French colony is growing.

The prime minister had been appointed to the job as part of a 2019 peace deal in Khartoum that now appears on the verge of collapse.

France: The Man who slapped President Macron says he did it due to France’s ‘decline’ under Macron, gets 4 – month prison sentence

A 28-year-old man on trial for slapping French President Emmanuel Macron testified on Thursday June 10, that the attack was impulsive and unplanned, and prompted by anger at France’s “decline.”

Damien Tarel faces possible jail time and a fine if found guilty of assaulting a public official at the special emergency trial in the southeastern city of Valence.

Update: Man who slapped President Macron says he did it because of France

Tarel was immediately arrested after the incident which occurred as the French leader was greeting a crowd in the region on Tuesday.

The man acknowledged hitting the president with a “rather violent” slap. “When I saw his friendly, lying look, I felt disgust, and I had a violent reaction,” he told the court. “It was an impulsive reaction… I was surprised myself by the violence.”

While he said he and his friends had considered bringing an egg or a cream pie to throw at the president, he said they dropped the idea — and insisted that the slap wasn’t premeditated.

“I think that Emmanuel Macron represents the decline of our country,” he said, without explaining what he meant.

Update: Man who slapped President Macron says he did it because of France

Tarel told the court that he supported the yellow vest economic protest movement that shook Macron’s presidency in 2019. He told investigators that he held right- or ultra-right political convictions without being a member of a party or group, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The charge of violence against a person invested with public authority is punishable by up to 3 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros ($54,000).

Macron wouldn’t comment Thursday on the trial, but insisted that “nothing justifies violence in a democratic society, never.”

“It’s not such a big deal to get a slap when you go toward a crowd to say hello to some people who were waiting for a long time,” he said in an interview with broadcaster BFM-TV. “We must not make that stupid and violent act more important than it is.”

At the same time, the president added, “we must not make it banal, because anyone with public authority is entitled to respect.”

Another man arrested in the ruckus that followed the slap, identified by the prosecutor as Arthur C., will be judged at a later date, in 2022, for illegal possession of weapons.

The prosecutor’s office said as well as finding weapons, police who searched the home of Arthur C. also found books on the art of war, a copy of Adolf Hitler’s manifesto “Mein Kampf,” and two flags, one symbolizing Communists and another of the Russian revolution.

Neither Tarel nor Arthur C., also 28, had police records, the prosecutor said.

A 28-year-old Frenchman who described himself as a right-wing or extreme-right “patriot” was sentenced to four months in prison Thursday for slapping President Emmanuel Macron in the face.

Damien Tarel was also banned from ever holding public office in France and from owning weapons for five years over the swipe Tuesday, which caught Macron’s left cheek with an audible thwack as the French leader was greeting a crowd.
