Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder Saga: $5.5 Billion Settlement, Yet the Cancer Debate Continues

For more than a decade, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been at the center of one of the largest product liability battles in corporate history. At the heart of the controversy is a simple question that still divides scientists, lawyers, and the company itself: Did the company’s iconic baby powder contribute to ovarian cancer?

This week, J&J agreed to a landmark settlement worth an estimated $5.5 billion to resolve approximately 76,000 lawsuits filed across the United States. The plaintiffs claim that prolonged use of the company’s talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer and other asbestos-related illnesses.

Despite the massive payout, Johnson & Johnson maintains that the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing. The company continues to insist that decades of scientific research support the safety of its talc products and that they have never contained asbestos—the cancer-causing mineral at the center of the allegations.

Nevertheless, the company stopped selling its talc-based baby powder in the United States and Canada in 2020, replacing it with a cornstarch-based alternative. The talc version was later withdrawn from the UK market in 2023.

According to Erik Haas, J&J’s Vice President of Litigation, the lawsuits “lack scientific merit,” and the company believes it would ultimately have prevailed in court. However, he said the settlement allows Johnson & Johnson to finally move beyond years of costly legal battles and focus on its core mission of developing life-saving medicines and medical technologies.

The controversy, however, is far from over.

In the United Kingdom, Johnson & Johnson is facing another major legal challenge. A lawsuit filed in 2025 before the High Court in London represents more than 3,000 claimants, with lawyers estimating potential damages could exceed £1 billion (€1.3 billion).

The claimants allege that they—or members of their families—developed cancers affecting the ovaries, pleura, or peritoneum after years of using J&J’s baby powder. They argue that the product contained asbestos-contaminated talc, a claim the company has consistently denied.

Although billions of dollars have been committed to settle thousands of cases, the scientific and legal debate remains unresolved. Johnson & Johnson continues to stand by the safety of its products, while thousands of former users continue to seek answers—and accountability—for illnesses they believe were caused by one of the world’s most recognizable household brands.
