Real Madrid have officially welcomed José Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabéu, appointing the veteran Portuguese manager for a second spell following the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa.
The Spanish giants announced on Thursday that Mourinho has signed a three-year contract, committing his future to the club until June 30, 2029.
The 63-year-old returns to Madrid after spending the past season in charge of Benfica. The Portuguese club confirmed on Wednesday that Real Madrid had agreed to pay a €15 million release fee to secure Mourinho’s services.
According to a statement on Real Madrid’s official website, Mourinho will formally begin his duties on July 13, when the team starts pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign.
In its announcement, the club stated: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today and chaired by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as first-team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.”
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, guiding the club to a LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey triumph, and a Supercopa de España. During his first stint, he also led Los Blancos to three consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Now, one of football’s most decorated and charismatic managers is back in Madrid, tasked with ushering in a new chapter at the club.
