Muhammed Babangida Rejects Tinubu’s Bank of Agriculture Appointment, Citing Personal Reasons

Abuja, Nigeria – Muhammed Babangida, son of Nigeria’s former military president, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), has declined his recent appointment by President Bola Tinubu as the Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. Babangida’s decision, communicated in a letter dated July 21, 2025, has since sparked political commentary.

The news of the rejection was made public on Monday by Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation Magazine, who shared Babangida’s letter on social media. In the correspondence, titled ‘Declining Appointment as Chairman, Bank of Agriculture’, Muhammed Babangida expressed gratitude for the honour but stated his inability to accept the role.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the honour of being considered and appointed as chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” the letter read.

However, he promptly added, “After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment. This decision was not made lightly. It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations, which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”

Despite his refusal to take up the position, Babangida affirmed his loyalty and willingness to support the current administration. “Your Excellency, I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership. I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service.”

The appointment of Muhammed Babangida was among a fresh batch of appointments announced by President Tinubu just days prior.

Reacting to the development, Dele Momodu, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), took to Instagram to commend Babangida, writing, “Well done, Muhammed, for rejecting a Greek gift.”

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has also weighed in on the matter, reportedly slamming President Tinubu and accusing the administration of attempting to “buy Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election” through such appointments.

Muhammed Babangida’s rejection of the high-profile role underscores the complex interplay of personal choices and political dynamics within Nigeria’s evolving leadership landscape.
