Nigeria Decries ‘Misaligned’ US Visa Restrictions, Cites Reciprocity Concerns

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government has voiced strong disapproval over the United States’ recent implementation of stringent visa rules for its citizens. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the decision as “misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect” that should define bilateral relations.

The controversial new policy limits the validity of non-immigrant visas – including the popular B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) categories – to a mere three months, allowing for single entry only. This marks a significant departure from previous arrangements, which often allowed for multi-year and multiple-entry visas.

According to the statement from Mr. Ebienfa, the Federal Government’s “attention has been drawn” to this revision of the visa reciprocity schedule, viewing it “with concern and keen interest.”

“The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations,” the statement read, directly challenging the spirit of the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

Nigeria further emphasized that this new restriction “places a disproportionate burden” on various segments of its population. This includes Nigerian travellers, students seeking academic opportunities, professionals engaging in legitimate business, families visiting loved ones, and individuals contributing to cultural and educational exchanges.

The Nigerian government highlighted the “longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties” that have historically characterized the relationship between Nigeria and the United States, suggesting that the new visa rules contradict the spirit of these established bonds. The reaction underscores Nigeria’s call for a re-evaluation of the policy, stressing the importance of upholding established diplomatic principles in the interest of both nations.
