The fragile security situation in Anambra State was thrown into sharp relief today following a brutal attack on the convoy linked to former Governor and current politician, Dr. Chris Ngige. The ambush, which occurred on the busy Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, left several people injured and tragically claimed the life of an innocent civilian bystander.
While the former Governor was confirmed to be safe—having been absent from the convoy at the time of the incident—the attack serves as a frightening indicator of how brazen and deadly insecurity has become, particularly when the attackers are reportedly dressed in official security uniforms.
The Ambush and the Disguise
Details of the attack were confirmed by Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, who provided a detailed account of the events that unfolded this afternoon.
According to the statement, the gunmen—suspected to be bandits notorious for causing havoc in the region—were reportedly dressed chillingly in police and military uniforms. This use of disguise adds a dangerous layer of confusion and intimidation, allowing the assailants to operate with temporary impunity.
The convoy’s pilot car bore the brunt of the attack, being reportedly riddled with bullets. The main target appears to have been the armed escort:
- A policeman in the pilot car was shot by the assailants.
- The gunmen proceeded to steal his official gun and uniform.
Fortunately, the police officer, identified as the escort leader, has already undergone necessary surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. None of the police officers in the convoy were killed.
The Tragic Toll on Bystanders
In an incident that highlights the extreme danger faced by citizens in high-crime zones, the most tragic casualties were local residents simply going about their day.
1. The Fatal Shooting of the Eyewitness
In a chilling move demonstrating the gunmen’s disregard for public safety and determination to destroy evidence, a woman attempting to record the unfolding drama on her phone was fatally shot. She was killed instantly by the gunmen. Her death is a stark reminder of the risks associated with documenting contemporary conflicts and attacks, even in residential areas.
2. The Injured Shop Owner
Another civilian, a shop owner who rushed to the scene out of curiosity and concern after hearing the gunfire, was also shot by the fleeing assailants.
While he sustained significant blood loss, his condition is reported to be stable. According to Chukwuelobe, the shop owner was fortunate, as none of the bullets lodged in his spine. He is scheduled to undergo surgery soon to remove the pellets and is expected to make a full recovery.
Ngige’s Assurance and Official Silence
Speaking shortly after the attack, His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, confirmed the devastating incident. His immediate focus has been on the welfare of those injured and the families of the bereaved.
Sir Fred Chukwuelobe quoted the former Governor:
“I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the attack, the identity of the assailants, or the steps being taken to secure the area and recover the stolen police weapons and uniform.
A Call for Heightened Security
This attack is more than just an assault on a political figure’s convoy; it is an assault on the peace and security of ordinary Anambra residents. The use of official uniforms by criminals creates a layer of confusion, eroding public trust in genuine security forces and making identification of threats nearly impossible.
The incident demands an urgent, comprehensive response from the state apparatus. Security must be tightened along major transport arteries like the Nkpor–Nnobi Road. Furthermore, the authorities must swiftly investigate how criminals are obtaining and utilizing official security uniforms, a trend that poses a massive risk to Nigeria’s overall internal security.
Our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased woman and we wish the injured police officer and the shop owner a quick and complete recovery. The search for safety and stability in Anambra State continues.
