A shocking and disturbing incident has unfolded in Edo State, Nigeria, where a man identified as Osemudiamen has confessed to killing his sister’s baby while under the influence of alcohol and a hard substance. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers of substance abuse and its devastating consequences.
In a video obtained by PUNCH Metro, Osemudiamen is seen being interrogated by security operatives, during which he admits to committing the heinous crime. The suspect, who appears to be remorseful, reveals that he was intoxicated at the time of the attack, having consumed drinks and “colos” (a slang term for a hard substance). He claims to have met a man named Fredrick, who introduced him to the substance, and that it was this combination of substances that led to his loss of control and ultimately, the tragic event.
Further investigation reveals that Osemudiamen is a member of the Aye confraternity, a notorious cult group in Nigeria. Interestingly, he claims to have been planning to renounce his membership before the incident occurred, but had not yet taken the necessary steps. He also mentions that he had contacted a lawyer for assistance, but was unable to afford the legal fees.
The Edo State Police Command has not yet released an official statement on the matter, as efforts to reach the spokesperson, Eno Ikoede, were unsuccessful.
This disturbing incident is a stark reminder of the rising incidents of crimes fueled by hard drug use among young people in Nigeria. In 2022, a similar incident was reported where a 21-year-old man, Michael Arigbabuwo, died during a birthday party after allegedly mixing two hard drugs for maximum effect.
The use of hard substances and alcohol can have devastating consequences, leading to impaired judgment, loss of control, and ultimately, tragic events like the one that occurred in Edo State. It is essential for individuals, particularly young people, to be aware of the dangers of substance abuse and to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with addiction.
Moreover, the fact that Osemudiamen was a member of a cult group highlights the need for increased efforts to combat cultism and substance abuse in Nigerian communities. The government, civil society organizations, and individuals must work together to create awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and cultism, and to provide support and resources for those affected.
As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, it is essential to remember that substance abuse is a serious issue that requires urgent attention. We must work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future and to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
