Nigerian banks and fintechs set to launch cNGN stablecoin soon

A consortium of Nigerian financial institutions, fintechs, and blockchain experts, the Africa Stablecoin Consortium (ASC) is set to launch a compliant Nigeria Naira (cNGN) stablecoin on February 27, 2024.

The consortium disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday. The launch of the cNGN is riding on the back of the Regulatory Sandbox recently released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to the consortium, the cNGN stablecoin would revolutionize financial transactions. Through the project, the consortium said it is committed to enhancing secure and compliant financial interactions, revolutionizing the way people transact and engage with their money securely and seamlessly.

Transformation of the Naira

While noting that the stablecoin will transform the Nigerian Naira into a currency for global settlements, the ASC said:

  • “This (the cNGN) ushers in a new era of financial fluidity, bridging the Nigerian Naira with the global market through blockchain technology. Backed 1:1 by Naira reserves held in designated commercial banks, the cNGN Stablecoin transforms the Naira into a dynamic tool for worldwide remittances, commerce, trade and investment.
  • More than just a currency, cNGN shortens settlement times, enabling payments that traverse the globe swiftly, mirroring the speed of a text message and at a fraction of the cost. This breakthrough paves the way for instantaneous financial transactions, seamlessly connecting Nigeria’s vibrant economy with international markets and offering unprecedented efficiency in both domestic and global financial interactions.”

What you can do with the cNGN

According to the consortium, the cNGN stablecoin will allow users to explore the World and experience a seamless and cost-effective way to engage with a global marketplace, with the familiarity of your Naira.

cNGN extends your financial reach far beyond Nigeria’s borders and acts as a global bridge, so you can pay for anything, anywhere, and at any time– all with a seamless tap. Shop the World, Pay in Naira without the traditional challenges of currency conversion and hefty international transaction fees.

Giving further insights into the use cases of the cNGN, the consortium said:

  • “Sending money home feels like sending a text message, effortless and instant: No more agonizing days waiting for remittances to clear. With cNGN, supporting your loved ones back home becomes as simple as a quick tap on your phone. No more standing in lines. With cNGN, funds land directly in their wallets within seconds, ready to fuel their dreams and brighten their days. • “Trade Like a Pro, Cost-Effectively. Cut out the red tape and sky-high fees of traditional international trade. With cNGN you can send and receive payments across the globe instantly enabling you to transact with national & international partners in any stablecoin currency, fueling economic growth and global success.
  • “Get paid, anywhere, instantly. Ditch the limitations of location and outdated payment systems. With cNGN, you can freelance for the world, right from your desk in Nigeria. Your talent knows no borders, so why should your income? Skip the bank queues and paperwork. Receive payments from clients across the globe, directly deposited into your cNGN wallet in minutes.

What you should know

Nairametrics had earlier reported that Nigerian banks and FinTechs are collaborating to develop and manage the cNGN. Similar to well-known stablecoins like USDT and USDC, the cNGN will be compatible with multiple public blockchains, enabling straightforward international transfers and expanding its use globally.

Mirroring the functionality of major stablecoins, the cNGN boasts interoperability with other public blockchains. This feature enables seamless global transfers, extending its utility beyond Nigerian borders.

The cNGN is a compliant and regulated consortium-driven stablecoin, pegged to the Naira in the Reserve Bank account. Unlike the eNaira, which is developed solely by the apex bank, the cNGN is managed by a consortium.

Two Police Inspectors Dismissed Over Alleged Robbery

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed two of its personnel, Sunday Adetoye and Ogunleye Stephen, over alleged corruption and robbery.

Naija News understands that the two Inspectors who were assigned to Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, were labelled with offences including armed robbery, official corruption, and illegal duty.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Mohammed Ali, made the decision to dismiss them after a thorough Orderly Room trial.

Inspector Adetoye, with Force number 279495, and Inspector Stephen, with Force number 223521, along with two members of a Vigilante Group named Semiu Afisu and Abidoye Femi, as well as a driver named Charles John, allegedly carried out a raid on a residence in the Obada-Oko community in Ogun State.

The said incident occurred at approximately 10 pm on November 23, 2023.

According to reports, they were armed with two Submachine SMG rifles and live ammunition during the raid. Without a warrant, they proceeded to search the apartment belonging to individuals named Taiwo Monsuru and Akintola Sunday.

Shockingly, they made off with five iPhones, one Samsung smartphone, one Tecno smartphone, and two laptop computers.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Ayuba, elucidated the circumstances surrounding their arrest.

According to her, the police officers stationed at Ifo Division established a roadblock upon receiving information from other residents of the apartment regarding the incident.

Armed with the description of the vehicle involved, the officers successfully apprehended its occupants, with the exception of ASP Ajayi Victor, who was the ringleader of the illicit operation. It is important to note that ASP Ajayi Victor is currently evading arrest and remains at large.

“The AIG has directed that the dismissed officers be charged to court alongside the civilians involved, while he urges all officers and men of the force to remain professional in the discharge of their duties by the law, as anyone found wanting will be accountable for his or her action or inaction,” the police statement reads.

BBC Investigation: Atrocious acts committed by late Pastor TB Joshua exposed

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has announced it’s readiness to release a 3-part investigative documentary revealing the atrocities and sexual crimes committed by late Pastor Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as TB. Joshua.

The millionaire cleric died on June 5, 2021 after a heart attack.

As part of the investigation, the British paper said it interviewed at least 30 former members and workers of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).

The first part of the documentary is scheduled to be released on January 8.

The 3-part documentary revealed the secret lifestyle of TB Joshua. It detailed tales of abuse, harassment, rape, manipulation, and staged miracles. Sources told the BBC that the church knew about all the allegations but never probed them. The alleged sexual crime is said to have spanned over two decades.

A part of the documentary revealed how SCOAN protected its congregation from the truth about the collapse of one of the church’s guesthouses in 2014.

A video that was shown multiple times to members on Emmanuel TV showed a short footage of the structure with something that seemed like an aircraft flying over it.

“On television, they were showing us the building had been bombed,” one of the sources who lost her daughter in the collapsed building told the BBC.

SCOAN is situated at Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos State. The church grew from a local evangelical congregation into a multimillion-dollar church with worshipers from all around the globe.

The aircraft story fed to the members was all a lie, Mr Emmanuel, one of the young men who served TB Joshua told the BBC. Emmanuel claimed the church had a structural defect.

The foundation of the building was inadequate for the floors built on it, Rae, a British citizen who attended the church and was a disciple, corroborated. She added that Joshua insisted that the building be raised despite professional advice.

“They told us don’t tell what you know,” Emmanuel, another worker at SCOAN said in the film. “They knew something was wrong with the building but they were managing it.”

SCOAN later paid the families of the victims cash as compensation which they interpreted to be “hush money”.

Also, a church worker who was part of the team that handed the money to victims’ families in South Africa said TB Joshua directed that she instruct the bereaved families not to speak to the media. Then, Joshua personally threatened families who refused the money, sources told the BBC.

“The building collapse is a good example of everyday life under TB Joshua. It is just a series of cover-ups. It is just this was so big it was almost impossible for him to make it go away,” Rae said

The BBC found that people were dismembered under the debris and dead bodies were transferred in SCOAN ambulances to hide the reality of the disaster from the media to protect both the image of the church and TB Joshua.

Survivors of TB Joshua’s sexual exploitation recounted how they were manipulated and silenced even when they knew the relationship they had with “daddy” was abusive. These women were part of TB Joshua’s discipleship. Several women recounted how he molested and raped them. A few women who resisted his assault at first were threatened into submission, one of the women told the BBC.

TB Joshua told the women he was sexually assaulting them for their salvation, all the women said. These women joined the synagogue when they were teenagers and spent years before finally leaving. A woman identified as Abisola said she was in the church for 14 years and was raped throughout her stay. When the women get pregnant as a result of being raped many times, they were forced to get an abortion in a dingy clinic inside the synagogue.

“We went into his room and I stood there. He said ‘off your clothes’ so I removed my clothes he just pointed so I lay down and then he raped me. He broke my virginity. I was screaming and he was whispering in my ears that I should stop acting like a baby. I was 17 years old. I was underage,” one of the women said.

One of the survivors confronted TB Joshua after she managed to escape. She recorded the encounter in videos she shared with the BBC. In the video, a security officer was heard threatening to shoot at the lady. Survivors said they were targeted, beaten, and shot at by thugs suspected of working for the pastor.

The BBC’s documentary revealed how the church staged managed and exaggerated miracles that were televised. People were told to exaggerate their problems so they could be healed, likewise, their healing so it could be “perfected by God”, a source who worked at the miracle department told the BBC.

Ex. Sierra Leone President charged with treason

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma has been charged with treason.

According to a statement shared by the Sierra Leone Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, the former president is being charged for his alleged involvement in the failed coup attempt of November 2023.

Mr Koroma was charged with four offences, including treason and two counts of harbouring fugitives. It was not clear as of press time if he had been arrested.

He was invited for questioning in December following an attack on a military barracks, a prison and other targets in Sierra Leone. The attacks, which the government later called a failed coup, led to the release of over 2,200 prisoners and the death of over 20 people.

President Julius Bio’s administration claimed that the former president’s bodyguards were largely responsible for the attempted coup. Shortly afterwards, Mr Koroma issued a statement denouncing the attacks.

Emefiele’s case: EFCC Probes Dangote, BUA, 50 Other Companies

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the forex transactions of some companies in the country.

The companies are being investigated for the forex allocations they got during the tenure of Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Naija News understands.

Some of the companies being investigated by the anti-graft agency include Dangote Group, BUA Group and Flour Mills. It is understood that a total of 52 companies are under the searchlight of the EFCC.

The information available on the investigation revealed that the EFCC had earlier written to the various companies asking for documentation on their forex transactions in the last 10 years, and they have all denied wrongdoing in their communications with the EFCC.

According to insiders quoted by The Cable on the matter, the Dangote Group, on its part, said it is ready to explain every detail of its forex transactions as it did not breach any laws.

When contacted by The Cable for comments on the development, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, reportedly declined comments.

Naija News recalls Emefiele was suspended as CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, 2023, and was subsequently arrested and detained by security operatives.

After several months in detention, he was released from the Kuje Correctional Center in December 2023 after fulfilling the terms of a bail condition granted him by the court.

“Why Hamas militants didn’t rape me during my captivity” – Israeli hostage Mia Schem explains

The 21-year-old French tattoo artist abducted and wounded by Hamas terrorists has revealed the only one reason she wasn’t raped by her captor during 54 days in captivity.

Schem, who has dual Israeli and French citizenship, said her tormentor kept her in a dark room under constant watch for most of her time in Gaza.

She said she was starved and taunted by the terrorist’s family while wondering if she’d be killed at any moment.

“His wife was outside the room with the children,” freed hostage Mia Schem said during a newly released interview on Israeli TV. “That was the only reason he didn’t rape me.”

“[I was] closed in a dark room, not allowed to talk, not allowed to be seen, to be heard, hidden,” Schem said. “There is a terrorist looking at you 24/7, looking, raping you with his eyes.

“There is fear of being raped, there is fear of dying,” Schem said, at times bursting into tears while recounting the ordeal.

“His wife hated the fact that he and I were in the same room. You feel like you want a hug, you know, woman to woman, to break down a bit.

“That’s all you had there. But she was so mean, she had such mean eyes.”

Schem was among more than 200 Israelis taken hostage during the Oct. 7 sneak attack by radical Hamas militants, who killed more than 1,200 people in the assault.

She was attending the Nova music festival near the border with the Gaza Strip when the terrorists invaded and went after the young Israeli festival-goers. The 21-year-old was shot in the arm during the invasion.

Schem said she tried to flee, but said terrorists fired on her car and set it on fire, leaving her only two choices at the time.

She was released to the Red Cross after 54 days in captivity in Gaza.

“It was a split-second decision, whether to stay put and burn to death or go with him,” she said.

She was dragged onto a pickup truck and taken into Gaza, where she had a makeshift splint placed on her wounded arm. She was then taken to a Palestinian home and held captive.

At times Israeli bombs from Israeli jets  shook where she was being captive, and even shattered the windows at one point, she said in the television interview.

“I thought, ‘If I didn’t die on the seventh [of October] I’m going to die now,’ ” Schem said, but added that, “I trusted the military.”

Despite her release, she still bears the scars of her nightmare and disdain for those who took her freedom.

“It was important to me to relay the truth about the nature of the people who live in Gaza, who they are truly are and what I experienced there,” she said in the interview.

“It is important to you that the world understands, what? That I went through a holocaust,” Schem added. “Everyone over there is a terrorist.”

Israeli Govt. begins the withdrawal of troops from Gaza

Israel has begun withdrawal of thousands of troops from Gaza, saying it will concentrate its efforts on the main enclave of the southern city of Khan Younis.

According to its authorities, Israel is pulling some troops from Gaza in a possible precursor to a scaled-back offensive against Hamas.

The military said in a statement on Monday that five brigades, or several thousand troops, were being taken out of Gaza in the coming weeks for training and rest.

Earlier on Sunday, the Army announced the troop withdrawal without specifying how many forces were leaving.

Speaking, army spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said: “The objectives of the war require prolonged fighting, and we are preparing accordingly.”

The withdrawal comes after weeks of intense fighting that has killed hundreds of Palestinians and dozens of Israelis.

Israel says it is targeting Hamas’s rocket launchers, tunnels, and military infrastructure, while Hamas says it is defending Gaza from Israeli aggression.

The current situation in Gaza is tense and unstable, as the war defied international efforts to broker a ceasefire.

Israel had launched a ground offensive into Gaza to uproot Hamas’s rocket launchers, tunnels, and military infrastructure, says it is defending itself from Hamas’s attacks, which reached as far as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Hamas, on its part, fired thousands of rockets into Israel, aiming to inflict casualties and damage on Israeli civilians and infrastructure.

Hamas, in a statement, said it is resisting Israel’s occupation and blockade of Gaza, which have caused humanitarian and economic crises.

The civilian population in Gaza is suffering the most from the war, as many have been killed, injured, or displaced by the Israeli airstrikes and shelling.

Gaza’s health system is overwhelmed and struggling to cope with the influx of wounded and sick people.

The international community has condemned the violence and called for an immediate end to the hostilities.

The United Nations, Egypt, Qatar, and other mediators have been trying to negotiate a truce between Israel and Hamas, but so far without total success, except the exchange of captives and prisoners of war.

The war has also sparked protests and clashes in the West Bank, Israel, and other countries, where Palestinians and their supporters have expressed their anger and solidarity with Gaza.

Some of these demonstrations have turned violent and resulted in deaths and injuries.

Israel says more than 8,000 militants have been killed, without providing evidence, blaming Hamas militants for the high civilian death toll.

It said the militants embed itself within residential areas, including schools and hospitals.

The war has displaced some 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, sending swells of people seeking shelter in Israeli-designated safe areas that the military has nevertheless bombed.

Palestinians are left with a sense that nowhere is safe in the tiny enclave.

With tensions remaining high across the region, the U.S. announced Monday that it would be sending an aircraft carrier strike group home and replacing it with an amphibious assault ship and accompanying warships.

Israel had vowed to crush Hamas’ military and governing capabilities in its war, which was sparked by the militant group’s Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people, with some 240 people taken hostage.

Israel responded with a blistering air, ground and sea offensive.

The Health Ministry in Gaza claimed that Israel has killed more than 21,900 people in Gaza, two-thirds of them women and children, but failed to differentiate between civilians and militants in the count.

In the meantime, Israel maintains control over Gaza’s airspace, sea access, and most of its land crossings, and imposes a blockade on the territory.

The status of Gaza and its relationship with Israel remains a contentious issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A report by De.FI, the security firm that runs the REKT database, has revealed that hackers stole approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrencies through multiple cyberattacks and thefts in 2023.

According to De.FI, the 2023 data is a testament to vulnerabilities and efforts being made to address them.

The report listed top crypto heists recorded this year including the hack against Euler Finance, in which hackers stole almost $200 million; as well as major hacks against Multichain ($126 million), BonqDAO ($120 million), Poloniex ($114 million), and Atomic Wallet ($100 million), among hundreds of others.

According to the report: “This amount, though dispersed across various incidents, underscores the persistent vulnerabilities and challenges within the DeFi ecosystem.

“2023 stood as a testament to both the ongoing vulnerabilities and the strides made in addressing them, even as interest in the space was relatively muted by the ongoing bear market in the first half of the year.”

The top 10 hacks had netted criminals almost 70% of all stolen funds this year, TRM found.

Attacks against the decentralised lending app Euler Finance, Multichain bridge connecting different blockchains, and Poloniex crypto exchange netted $100 million each.

The Canadian government has revived two programmes to invite caregivers for new applications into Canada from January 1, 2024.

According to information released by Canada, the two programmes are five-year trial projects that enable eligible caregivers and their families to migrate and settle down permanently.

The Canadian government stated in updated information that seasoned caregivers can use any of the two programmes to immigrate to the nation of North America with their families.

It also showed that in contrast to the initial 24 months for caretakers, only 12 months of experience are required to be eligible.

The information said: “The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot are 5-year pilot programs that let qualified caregivers and their family members come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents.

“If you’ve been offered a job in Canada as a caregiver or have experience working in Canada as a caregiver, you may be able to apply for permanent residence through one of these pilots.”

“The application process will be different depending on your situation and how much qualifying work experience you have. You now only need 12 months of experience instead of 24 months to qualify.”

African students banned from bringing families to France

COVID-19: France puts more departments on Covid high alert

The French parliament has passed legislation prohibiting Nigerian students and others from bringing their families to France.

The law has stirred fierce debate, exposing fractures within the governing alliance and triggering resignations in protest.

Directly addressing the passing of the law, Marine Le Pen of the National Rally hailed it as an “ideological victory” for the far-right, while Eric Ciotti, leader of the right-wing Republican party, lauded it as “firm and courageous.”

According to a report by the BBC on Thursday, a previous draft was rejected by parliament last week when the National Rally, as well as the left, voted against it. In response, the government redrafted the bill, making some of its provisions tougher.

“This is our bill,” said Eric Ciotti, the leader of the right-wing Republican party. He called it “firm and courageous”.

But left-wingers said Mr Macron was enabling the far-right. “History will remember those who betrayed their convictions,” Socialist party leader Olivier Faure said.

32 of France’s 101 departments, including Paris, said they would refuse to implement the provisions of the law on benefits for non-citizens.

The French vote came hours before an EU agreement to reform the asylum system across the bloc’s 27 member states.

The new pact, agreed by EU governments and European Parliament members, includes creating border detention centres and enabling the quicker deportation of rejected asylum seekers.

“Having erection for over 30 minutes is harmful to men” — Expert warns

Prof. Ademola Popoola of Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin, Unilorin, has warned that penile erection after 30 minutes in sexual intercourse is purposeless, dangerous and harmful to men.

Popoola raised the alarm in Ilorin during his paper presentation at the 250th Inaugural Lecture of the university, entitled: “That All May Pee in Peace”.

According to him, ”a person who has more than 30 minutes of erection should report immediately to the hospital”.

He stated that the erection must be aborted as soon as possible by a competent doctor in order to preserve penile erection subsequently.

The expert, who observed that the penis need to be turgid or erect for satisfactory sexual intercourse, however, said the erected penis often fractures or breaks.

“Research shows that the right side of the penis ruptures more than the left side,” he said.

Similarly, Popoola stated that in a person’s lifetime urination, which is supposed to be fun and reliving, may become a problem and sometimes if intervention is not made on time, it could lead to the demise of the individual.

The don, who teaches in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences of Unilorin, observed the various causes of challenges with urination in women.

“They include abnormal shifting of the uterus, urethrocele and other uncommon causes such as perforation ovarian teratoma and anteverted uterus,” he said.

The expert warned that blood in the urine should cause great concern amd peaceless urination.

This, he said, may signify underlying disorders that need to be investigated, affing that the cause of blood in urine should be identified within a week or two of presentation to the hospital and a deadline of treatment set out.

He therefore called for comprehensive care of the patients with urological malignancies, which should be covered by the National Health Insurance Authourity.

Popoola also advised the Federal Government to make available research funding to support genitourinary problems, including kidney failure.

Israeli Military uncovers largest Hamas attack tunnel in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday uncovered the largest-ever Hamas attack tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip, close to the Erez border crossing with Israel.

The tunnel, of which around four kilometers (2.5 miles) goes down some 50 meters (165 feet) underground in some areas and appears to be wide enough for vehicles to pass through.

It did not enter Israeli territory, the army said in a statement.

It cost millions of dollars and took years to construct, Israeli forces said, with the project led by Mohamed Yahya, brother of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who is believed to have orchestrated the vicious October 7 attacks that killed over 1,200 Isreali citizens.

The honeycomb of passageways features drainage systems, electricity, ventilation, sewage and a communication network as well as rails.

The floor is compacted earth while its walls are reinforced concrete and its entrance is a metal cylinder with 1.5 centimetres (half-inch) thick walls.

Footage released by the Israeli army, which it said was filmed by Hamas, showed a small construction vehicle being driven into the tunnel, an extensive temporary warehouse filled with pre-cast concrete for lining the walls and workers digging beneath the earth using crude power tools.

Also, the Israeli army said it had found a large number of weapons stored in the tunnel, ready to be used in an attack.

Last month, the Israeli military uncovered a tunnel shaft on the grounds of the Al-Shifa hospital complex, the enclave’s largest medical facility. Its discovery has been central to the IDF’s argument that there may be a network of tunnels below the hospital.

The hospital, Gaza’s largest, was raided by Israeli forces last month, who accuse Hamas of running a command center beneath it. Hamas and hospital officials say it has only been used to treat patients.

Pope Francis autorises priests to bless same-sex unions

Pope Francis has formally approved allowing priests to bless same-sex couples, with a new document explaining a radical change in Vatican policy by insisting that people seeking God’s love and mercy shouldn’t be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” to receive it.

It represents a significant departure from previous church teaching, which argued against blessing same-sex unions. When it comes to blessing same-sex relationships, the Pope believes priests should be flexible.

The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office, released Monday, elaborates on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October. In that preliminary response, Francis suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if they didn’t confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage.

The Vatican said the church must shy away from “doctrinal or disciplinary schemes, especially when they lead to a narcissistic and authoritarian elitism whereby instead of evangelizing, one analyzes and classifies others, and instead of opening the door to grace, one exhausts his or her energies in inspecting and verifying.”

It stressed that people in “irregular” unions — gay or straight — are in a state of sin. But it said that shouldn’t deprive them of God’s love or mercy.

“Thus, when people ask for a blessing, an exhaustive moral analysis should not be placed as a precondition for conferring it,” the document said.

The Rev. James Martin, who advocates for greater welcome for LGBTQ+ Catholics, praised the new document as a “huge step forward” and a “dramatic shift” from the Vatican’s 2021 policy.

The lady who filmed herself in top and only panties said she was done putting up with the cheating of her husband.

According to her, he went out to cheat and still relied on her to cook for him.

The lady filmed the entire process of preparing the ‘meal’ and then displayed the finished product.

She promised to share the video of how her husband demolished the treat later.

Kim Jong Un, North Korean dictator, begs and cries in front of thousands of women to have more children (video)

North Korean dictator,  Kim Jong Un broke down in tears in front of thousands of women as he called on women to have more children, saying that it was their duty to halt the country’s declining birth rate.

In his emotional plea,  Kim Jong Un is seen dabbing his eyes with a handkerchief while addressing thousands of women at a National Mothers’ Meeting in Pyongyang on Sunday, December 3.

‘Preventing a decline in birth rates and good childcare are all of our housekeeping duties we need to handle while working with mothers,’ Kim said at the event, while also urging them to instil the values of his communist party in their children.

The event – the first National Mothers’ Meeting in 11 years – was put on amid a fall in the isolationist state’s birth rate, which has evidently prompted concern among the DPRK’s (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) top officials.

Addressing the audience as ‘Dear Mothers’, Kim told them ‘we are confronted with a host of social tasks that our mothers should join to tackle’.

‘These tasks,’ he said, ‘include bringing up their children so that they will steadfastly carry forward our revolution, eliminating the recently-increasing non-socialist practices, promoting family harmony and social unity, establishing a sound way of cultural and moral life, making the communist virtues and traits of helping and leading one another forward prevail over our society, stopping the declining birth rate, and taking good care of children and educating them effectively.

‘These belong to our common family affairs, which we need to deal with by joining hands with our mothers,’ he added.

He went on to say that ‘in view of our mothers’ position and role in their families and society’, his government viewed the meeting of mothers as ‘no less important than a party congress or a plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee.’

According to reports, the last census North Korea released was in 2008, and it showed its population stood at 24 million. Estimates now suggest that 25.7 million people inhabit the country.

The ECOWAS Court orders Republic of Benin to pay Sunday Igboho 20 million CFA over rights violation

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), sitting in Abuja, has ordered the government of the Republic of Benin to pay Yoruba nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, a sum of 20 million CFA within three months for unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental human rights.

The court, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, declared that the government of the Republic of Benin must ensure that the money is paid to Adeyemo within a space of three months, starting from the day the judgment to that effect is delivered.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justices Gberi-Bé Ouattara, Sengu M. Koroma, and Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro GONÇALVES, in matter marked: ECW/CCJ/APP/15/22 Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) vs. Republic of Benin, the court also ordered the Francophone country to comply with its order to pay 20 million CFA to Adeyemo within three months and also report back to the court with the evidence of payment.

Counsel for the applicant (Adeyemo) include Tosin Ojaomo, Aderemilekun Omojola Esq., Dr. Janet Fashakin Esq., and Irene Aclombessi, who represented the Republic of Benin.

The judgment followed the application brought before the court by Adeyemo against the defendant (Benin Republic), challenging his arrest and detention in the French-speaking country on July 21, 2021.

The application was filed before the ECOWAS Court in Abuja, on February 10, 2022.

According to the court documents, “Orders sought wherefore Chief Adeyemo prays for the following from this Honourable Court: 1 “Pursuant to Article 59 of Rules of Procedure, an expedited procedure and hearing regarding the imprisonment and release of Chief Adeyemo;

“…2)An Order for the immediate and unconditional release of Chief Adeyemo, along with his Nigerian passport, pending litigation and determination of damages, and (3) Such orders as this honourable court may deem fit.”

Recall that Igboho and his wife Ropo were arrested on July 20, 2021, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and detained at the request of the Nigerian government.

The Yoruba nation agitator had fled Nigeria after a combined team of the Nigeria Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his residence, located around the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, on July 1, 2021.

The statement said there were two fatalities (one of which was the shooter) and five people with injuries.

Teenage Russian girl kills classmate and herself

Investigators were working to determine a motive, the statement said.

Bryansk is one of several Russian regions that have seen cross-border attacks in the course of the war with Ukraine, and where Moscow has encouraged the formation of self-defense units.

There have been several school shootings in Russia in the past few years. The last major school shooting in Russia occurred in September 2022, when a man opened fire at a school in the city of Izhevsk. The attack killed 15 people, including 11 children, and wounded 24.

Nigerian Albinos lament rise in skin cancer due to climate change

The Association of Albinism in Kaduna State has expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of skin cancer and its devastating effects on the well-being of people with albinism.

An alarming rise in skin cancer has threatened the lives of albinos in Africa as the Conference of the Parties (COP28) is set to address climate change’s impact.

The 28th session of the COP at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is underway in Dubai, UAE, where concerns about the alarming impact of extreme heat on vulnerable communities will be raised.

In an interview with journalists on Sunday, Abubakar Adam, the chairman of the association in Kaduna, said that in the arid regions of West Africa, including Kaduna, the lives of millions of individuals with albinism were increasing threat due to the harsh weather conditions.

Mr Adam revealed the dire consequences of climate change on albinos while lamenting the recent loss of three people with albinism in the state.

“Two albinos in Kajuru Local Government and one in Zaria died, and the deaths were all attributed to climate change-related issues, including skin cancer.

“People with albinism lack melanin in their skin, making them more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer.

“We are witnessing an increase in skin-related illnesses, adding to the challenges of our already difficult lives,” Mr Adam said.

He said the association has launched an ongoing campaign to educate the parents of children with albinism in the state.

Mr Adam explained that the association also focused on raising awareness about the high cost of living affecting most adults with albinism, who struggle to work during the day due to the intense heat.

“We often seek refuge under trees or umbrellas to shield our skin from burning,” he lamented.

The chairman highlighted the need for protective measures against the harsh effects of climate change.

Also, in an interview with Ibrahima Yakubu, the spokesperson of an NGO, African Climate Reporters, stated they would, in collaboration with the African Institutes of Waste and Environmental Studies and other scientific institutions, organise a sensitisation campaign in the state.

“Why MohBad’s neck was broken in his coffin” – cousin spills

Darosha Losobeh, a cousin to the late Nigerian singer, Oladimeji Aloba, aka Mohbad, has dismissed accusations of breaking the deceased’s neck.

There are reports that suggested that Losobeh broke Mohbad’s neck to fit him into the casket used for his burial.

Mohbad died in a controversial circumstance in September with many pointing accusing fingers on his former record libel chairman, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley and his ally, Sam Larry.

While reacting to the allegations regarding the neck, Darosha denied the claims.

In a post via his Instagram story, he expressed worries over the impact of these accusations on his mental well-being.

He said, “I’m so down to the extent that I had to write this to clear this whole story about me going online that I bent my love’s neck; this is the craziest and saddest thing that ever happened to me in my whole life. That I broke my brother’s neck, seriously, this hurt me so much.

“What happened about the neck was that when we got to Ikorodu, we were told there was no space to keep his body at the mortuary and we didn’t want him buried that night. So, a worker there advised the family to pay for an ambulance and a coffin where we can keep him until morning, and the same ambulance would drive him down to the place of burial.

“The whole family agreed to the idea because the ambulance that took us to Ikorodu was complaining that they had to leave the same night back to the island. It was only his mum that was not present there that midnight.

“The N1million I sent to his dad is not for him to spend because it was instructed that we should use the money in doing the burial arrangement, but unfortunately, the place we buried him is not nice to me and not secure, so I told his father to use the money to erect a fence for his safety. The whole team and family can testify to this because I have every proof, and I sent his brother the rest of the money when we arrived home.

“I was the first person that went to Panti to write a statement and called for questioning. You can go to Panti station to ask more about me, not coming online to say what you don’t know; well, I know it’s all for content, but God in heaven will judge you, tarnishing my image even with all that I am going through.

“About the salt, when my father died, a salt was placed on his chest till we arrived and I was told it was local embalming to keep him fresh till the whole family arrived, and I did the same thing because a lot of people were still coming to see him before leaving to Ikorodu that night.

“Lastly, about his properties and music catalogs, Mohbad has a lawyer that controls all of these things, and he has a contract with ONErpm, so all of these things are controlled by them, and his car is parked in front of his house at Orchid.

“I can’t drive his car because I have mine. If we really want justice, let the government work, and let’s wait for an autopsy. Stop bashing his loved ones. Abi una wants us to go depressed too #justiceformohbad.”

GoodNews: Dangote $19b refinery receives first crude oil today !

The much talked about $19 billion Dangote Refinery located in Lagos State on Thursday, received its first tanker of crude oil feedstock volume of about one million barrels from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

The tanker was chartered by state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).

An S&P Global Commodity Insights report revealed that the cargo was supposed to have landed at the 650,000 barrels per day facility yesterday.

While quoting market sources and tanker tracking data, S&P reports that fuel production at the new refinery was set to start after years of delays and deferments.

The tanker’s estimated arrival time was on Thursday, December 7 by 8 pm, heralding the commencement of crude supplies for the refinery operations.

The NNPC owns a 20% stake in the refinery as it recently entered into an agreement to supply 6 million barrels of crude oil as feedstock to the Dangote refinery in December, aiming to jumpstart operations.

Designed to process multiple crudes concurrently, the refinery aims to process three Nigerian crude grades — Escravos, Bonny Light, and Forcados.

An inside source in Dangote said the management of the refinery has set machinery in place to receive the shipment.

“Hopefully, we will barge it tomorrow (today) after going through the necessary regulatory clearance. I am sure we will finalise all the clearance today. Also, there is going to be a ceremony to receive the shipment. This is a great and exciting event and an historic moment for our country”, the source said.

Woman Sentenced To 15 years Imprisonment For Killing Her Twin Sister

The Mokopane Regional Court in South Africa has sentenced a 35-year-old woman, Tshepho Mogoshadi Mphahlele, to 15 years imprisonment, over the gruesome murder of her twin sister at Ga Mogotlane village in Limpopo.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the woman was found guilty of brutally killing her twin sister on January 18, 2023.

“During the trial, the court heard how the accused attacked her twin sister after they got into a heated argument and she stabbed her with a knife several times until she died at their residence,” Mashaba said. After the murder, Mphahlele chopped her sister’s body up with an axe, before fleeing the scene.

She later handed herself over to the Moletlane police station on January 20, and she was then arrested.

”The case was assigned to Sergeant Rodney Mothiba, and he diligently worked on the case to ensure that the accused was denied bail until she was found guilty,” said Mashaba. “The accused was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment for the murder of her twin sister.” Hadebe added that no person has the right to take away someone’s life, even after being provoked.

Canadian Govt announces new visa requirements; raises proof of funds from to $20,000

The Canadian government has announced that the “cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants” for international students will increase from $10,000 to $20,000, starting from January 1, 2024.

Marc Miller, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, made this announcement in a statement on Thursday, December 7.

“Starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada.

“For 2024, a single applicant will need to show they have $20,635, representing 75% of LICO, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. This change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024,” the statement reads in part.

For almost 20 years, study permit applicants for international students have remained at $10,000.

This review, which takes effect from January 1, “will help prevent student vulnerability and exploitation,” the statement added.

The news comes after the UK introduced a new set of rules that would make it more difficult for Nigerians and others to obtain a visa.

Home Secretary James Cleverly announced the changes in the House of Commons on Monday.

The government said it would now set a minimum annual salary for foreign workers to be eligible for a skilled worker visa at £38,700 from £26,200. The figure itself is more than the existing median average salary of a full-time worker in Britain.

‘Excessive protein intake may cause miscarriage’ – Gynecologist

Dr Abdulraheem Muslimu, an Obstetric Gynecologist in Bauchi on Friday, said excessive protein intake during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria that excess protein increases toxic ammonia production in a pregnant woman’s body.

Mr Muslimu, who is with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, O&G, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, ATBUTH, said “protein plays vital role in embryonic development, but its excessive intake can also lead to birth deformities.

“Ammonia toxicity decreases embryonic and fetal survival, growth and development.”

The gynecologist added that research had shown that the Recommended Daily Alliance, RDA, for protein intake during pregnancy is between 60 and 70 grams.

He, therefore, advised pregnant women to always seek for dietary plans from nutritionists and regularly attend ante-natal clinics for early detection of any complications.

The expert also encouraged spousal support during and after pregnancy in accessing quality care to reduce the burden of maternal and child complications.

70-yr-old Elderly woman gives birth to twins after IVF

A 70-year-old woman has become the oldest woman in Africa to give birth after welcoming twins through IVF treatment, her hospital said.

Safina Namukwaya according to UK Mirror delivered a baby girl and boy on Wednesday afternoon via a caesarean, the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, Uganda, said.

Medics at the hospital said the mother and her two babies are doing well after they were delivered via a caesarean.

The hospital said, “This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.” It’s believed Ms Namukwaya welcomed a baby girl called Sarah in 2020, so she’s become a mother three times over in as many years.

While speaking to the NTV channel, Ms Namukwaya said she had suffered some complications and difficulties during her latest pregnancy. Namukwaya added she is no longer with the father of the twins.

“Men don’t like to hear that you are going to have more than one child. Even after I was admitted, my man never showed up,” Ms Namukwaya said.

And Ms Namukwaya went for the treatment at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre having tried for a baby for 40 years.
She said she faced judgement and criticism during this difficult period.

She said, “One time, a very young boy heckled at me saying I had been cursed by my mother to die without a child.”

Speaking after welcoming her first baby, Sarah, in 2020, Ms Namukwaya said, “Many people judged and abused me for being barren but, I decided to leave everything to the Almighty God who has finally answered my prayers.”

Although IVF isn’t typically offered to a woman older than 43 by the NHS, some private clinics will provide this service to women further age brackets. The option uses eggs frozen earlier in the mother’s life, or eggs from a donor.

Where, When and How Were They Written And How Come The Imprimatur or HEADER of Tinubu’s Presidential Legal Team (TPLT) Was Found In All The 798 Pages Of The Judgment’s Certified True Copy (CTC) issued by the Presidential Election Tribunal? Apart from our letters going down memory lane with regard to the subject matter including controversies inherent in the judgment(s), we also strongly requested for comprehensive visa ban against members of Nigeria’s 2023 PEPT and their nuclear families (.i.e. wives, children and nannies) and those of them already residing or studying or holidaying or visiting or working in such Democracy enabling countries.

We Strongly Oppose Nomination Of Justice Haruna Tsammani As JCA

By his headship of the widely condemned and strongly rejected 2023 PEPT Judgment(s), nomination of Haruna Tsammani (JCA) as a ‘Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria’ is not only strongly opposed and roundly rejected but also seen many as “a reward for a bad job well done”. His elevation to the Supreme Court of Nigeria is also capable of causing more corporate image damage(s) to what remains of the country’s international rule of law rating and integrity (if any). It is hereby our strongly and persuasive call on the petitioned democratic forces to bring the 21 other JSC nominees cutting across the country’s six geopolitical zones into strong public scrutiny and ensure that the bad and the ugly among them are not allowed access into the Hallowed Chamber of the Nigerian Supreme Court. The names of other 21 Supreme Court nominees are here.

Democratic Forces Must At All Time Hold Government Of Nigeria Accountable

Democracy is like good laws which can never work unless activated. Human Rights are also deaf and dumb in docile and illiteracy-ruled society especially that overrun by tyranny. Therefore, the petitioned Democratic Forces must rise and activate propellers of good and accountable governance in Nigeria or any part thereof. For instance, National Assembly members can never be rubber-stamping or Executive Arm turning itself into demigods if Democratic Forces are alive to their oversight democratic responsibilities. Well raised and harnessed public opinions in the world over are the nightmare and effective checks and balances for erring and dictatorial public office holders, whether elected, selected or appointed. Through Democratic Free Speeches, Governmental excesses and brutes are cut to sizes and forced to rise to their sacred duties. Democratic Free Speeches are also globally noted to have more than 20 lawful and public result-oriented forms including picketing, processions, vigils, local and international rallies, ghost street (sit-at-home), public interest petitions, class action or public interest litigations, local and international press conferences, researches, investigations and documentations; engagements with Government reps and influential members of the diplomatic community, hunger strikes, legislative engagements and sponsorship of public-interest bills; issuance of early warnings, election participations or boycotts, withdrawal of services, local and international speech deliveries, freedom-square rallies and speeches, etc. The Democratic Forces petitioned are specifically called upon to ensure that come August 22, 2024 when the present CJN goes on mandatory retirement, a stooge and an democracy enemy is not imposed and allowed access into the hallowed seat of CJN as well as come October 21, 2025 when the current INEC Chair will mandatorily end his last five year tenure. His replacement must not be a stooge and an arch enemy of democracy and political participation in Nigeria or any part thereof.

BREAKING NEWS!! CBN to freeze accounts without BVN, NIN beginning April 2024

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said accounts without a bank verification number (BVN) or national identification number (NIN) will be restricted from April 2024.

In a circular released on Friday, December 01, 2023, the apex bank stated that a BVN or NIN verification will be carried out shortly, stating the need for compliance.

“Effective immediately, any unfunded account/wallet shall be placed on ‘Post No Debit or Credit’ until the new process is satisfied. Effective March 1, 2024, all funded accounts or wallets shall be placed on ‘Post No Debit or Credit’ and no further transactions permitted,” the circular by the CBN Director of Payments System Management Department Chibuzo Efobi, and the Director of Financial Policy and Regulation Department Haruna Mustapha read in part.

It said all BVN or NIN attached to accounts/wallets must be electronically revalidated by January 31, 2024,

Also, it noted that a BVN or NIN verification will be “conducted shortly”, the move CBN said is part of its efforts to promote financial system stability and strengthening of the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures in financial institutions.

It further revealed that banks will also carry out a “comprehensive BVN and NIN audit shortly” and where breaches are identified, appropriate sanctions shall be applied.

“The process for account opening shall commence by electronically retrieving BVN or NIN-related information from the NIBSS’ BVN or NIMC’s NIN databases and for same to become the primary information for onboarding of new customers, and all existing customer accounts/wallets for individuals with validated BVN shall be profiled in the NIBSS’ ICAD immediately and within 24hrs of opening accounts/wallets,” the CBN added.

“In cases where a potential customer does not have a BVN or NIN, the CBN advised the regulated financial institution to “commence the process of enrolling the individual onto the BVN database and be guided by the extant protocols issued by NIBSS”.

New HIV Prevention drug has proved effective

A drug which stops HIV from infecting the body has proved to be a highly effective “real-world” preventative treatment, a study has confirmed.

The research was conducted on 24,000 people taking it across England and the results have been described as “reassuring”, BBC reports.

Thousands of people are already taking PrEP through sexual health clinics.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which led the PrEP Impact Trial with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said it was the largest ever real-world study of its kind. It was carried out at 157 sexual health clinics across England between October 2017 and July 2020.

The study found use of PrEP, also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis. reduced the chances of getting HIV by around 86% when used in everyday life – taking into account inconsistent or incorrect use. Clinical trials suggested the medication is 99% effective.

Dr John Saunders, a consultant in sexual health and HIV who worked on the study, said: “This trial has further demonstrated the effectiveness of PrEP in preventing HIV transmission and has, for the first time, shown the protective effect reported by earlier trials, but at scale, and delivered through routine sexual health services in England.”

The Terrence Higgins Trust HIV charity welcomed the study’s publication, but said there was “more to be done” to increase access to, and awareness of, the drug, particularly among some minority groups.

Debbie Laycock, head of policy, said: “We think that there are certain communities and individuals at the moment who could benefit from PrEP but aren’t accessing it.”

“Many women just don’t know PrEP exists,” she added.

She said the charity was calling for PrEP to be made available in pharmacies and online to widen access to it.

Dr Saunders said that although the clinical success of the drug had been proven, this study revealed other important information about how it is used.

“Before, we didn’t know how many people would want it, take it, or how long they would stay on it for,” he said.

“Now we know who is being prescribed it and we can work with clinics to try and get more people to take it.”

He said that “real-world effectiveness” was dependent on many factors, particularly whether the drug is taken correctly.

Nigerian Airforce helicopter crashes and explodes in Port Harcourt

A Nigerian Air Force helicopter crash-landed and exploded at the NAF Base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident occurred around 7am on Friday, December 1, 2023.

“I was inside my apartment when I heard this thunderous sound at the NAF Base. The next thing I saw was a thick flame. I don’t know if there are casualties because I can’t go close to the scene for now. But I heard a blast twice,” a source told Punch

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, who confirmed the incident said that five persons on board survived with minor injuries.

According to Gabkwet, the NAF MI-35P had taken off to embark on an operation against oil thieves in Rivers State.

“A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) MI-35P helicopter has crashed at Port Harcourt today, December 1, 2023. The unfortunate incident occurred at about 7.45 am shortly after the aircraft took off for an operation against economic saboteurs in Rivers State,” the statement read.

“Fortunately, the entire crew of five survived the crash with very minor injuries and are currently being attended to at NAF Medical Centre Port Harcourt,”

He said the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.

“The Chief of Air Staff is currently en route to Port Harcourt to assess the situation for himself, see to the wellbeing of the crew, and give further directives.

“An incident of this nature is yet again a grim reminder of the dangers associated with military flying and the risks NAF pilots and technicians experience in their onerous tasks of defending our nation and deterring criminal elements from their nefarious activities.”

Davido’s Logistics Manager, Israel Afeare, aka Israel DMW, has announced the end of his marriage to his wife, Sheila, in an Instagram post on Saturday.

He narrated what transpired, how they met and how she started giving him attitude after complaining that he was embarrassing her with the way he behaved like a slave around Davido.

In a lengthy write up, Israel DMW revealed that he had met his estranged wife, Sheila in February 2022.

He recalled that he met his wife as a virgin, a daughter of a pastor and they had met during one of their evangelism outreaches at their church.

One thing led to another, and they became intimate friends but she refused to have any physical encounter with him, insisting that she could only give herself to the man she is married to.

Israel recounted that he agreed with her condition and immediately set about proposing to her, and upgrading her lifestyle from that of someone who uses a 60k phone to a new iPhone of 1 million naira.

Upgrading her wardrobe and buying her new human hairs which cost him a fortune.

However, he alleged that, after their luxurious wedding, she changed and began showing her real self to him.

According to Israel, she began setting standards and expecting him to follow them. She also claimed that he is embarrassing her with the way he keeps begging his boss, Davido, online.

Israel said, “Marrying a lady because you met her during evangelism as a virgin, a pastors daughter, a member of ur same winners chapel church, might not guarantee anything peace at all. Dnt be too eager or quick to trust people. People can change at anytime. People can be very ungrateful and deceptive. | met Sheila February 19, 2022. We became friends which later became intimate. She told me she would only loose her virginity to the man that would marry her, since her Ugep, Cross River, mother, who’s now 41, who had earlier married 2 different men, with 2 kids, before marrying her father and that she was over due at 21 for marriage. We fully agreed with her terms and conditions. I immediately began a full upgrade of her unkept situation by firstly giving her 300k and also replacing her tattered phone of less than 60k to a brand new iphone 12 Pro Max of 860k in less than 2 weeks.

“I later also replaced the 12 Pro Max to a brand 14 Pro Max of 1.2m that she’s currently using to slay. I did a lot of shoppings for her. Bought her clothes and bags including expensive human hairs she’s using without sleeping with her then. I later proposed and she fully accepted. We later did a Legally introduction, traditional and white weddings in Benin City. Sheila immediately changed by showing her real self after our wedding by wanting to set standards for me because she now felt she was blown as juju wife, fully verified on Instagram, with more followers from her earlier struggling 3k followers when I met her. A fully sapa girl I met with just 2,700 in her account.

“I have never raised my hands on her any day. I dnt beat women at all. I respect them so much. The least money for her upkeep was 100k. She now wakes up to tell me that I derive dignity in begging my oga, and that I am fully a slave and that am disgracing her on social media. had earlier taken her to show same oga for the first time before we wedded, when we were in Abuja Transcorp Hilton, and oga asked her straight forward if she was ready for marriage, and she fully answered by saying yes and oga immediately gave her 500k for airtime. Oga was fully present in benin for my wedding, after cancelling a 140m show appearance. Oga…”

President Putin might be in power till 2030 – Kremlin

The Kremlin says it hopes President Vladimir Putin will run in the March election for another term as Russian president, a move that would keep Putin in power until at least 2030.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview published on Friday, November 17.

Putin, who took over the presidency from Boris Yeltsin on the last day of 1999, has already been in power for longer than any other Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin, beating even Leonid Brezhnev’s 18-year tenure. Putin turned 71 on Oct. 7.

Asked by the student television channel of Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO) what the next president after Putin should be like, Peskov said: “The same.”

“Or different but the same,” Peskov told MGIMO 360 with a smile.

“Putin has not yet announced his intention to run but I sincerely want to believe that he will do that, and I have no doubt that he will win the elections. I have no doubt that he will continue to be president.”

A Reuters report earlier this month said that Putin has decided to run in the March election, as he feels he must steer Russia through the war against Ukraine.

For Putin, who opinion polls show enjoys approval ratings of 80% inside Russia, the election is a formality if he runs: with the support of the state, the state media and almost no mainstream public dissent, he is certain to win.

The war in Ukraine has triggered the biggest confrontation with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis; Western sanctions have delivered the biggest external shock to the Russian economy in decades; and in June Russia had to put down an attempted mutiny by powerful mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash two months later.

Peskov said the world was being transformed as the West struggled to maintain its post-Cold War dominance despite its clear decline.

“The collective West will do anything to try to cling onto its leadership which is floating away,” Peskov said.

When asked what Russia would look like in a decade, Peskov said: “It must be and will be stronger, wiser and richer.”

“Why my marriage crashed” – Angela Okorie

Nollywood actress, Angela Okorie has revealed that she dumped her estranged husband, Chukwuma Orizu because she “fell out of love.”

The mother of one said she became tired of marriage because of pressure from her husband’s family members who were constantly asking her to quit entertainment.

Okorie spoke in a recent podcast interview hosted by her colleague, Iyabo Ojo.

She said, “I won’t advise anybody to be in a marriage when you’re not in love with the man. I think that’s the reason a lot of women cheat. In this Lekki, you have too many women who cheat in their marriages.

“For me, I fell out of love. The man [my ex-husband] was a good man. I fell out of love because of what his family was doing. The family didn’t want me to continue acting. They didn’t want me to do anything acting. They were like, ‘If we are going to marry you, you’ll stop doing entertainment.’ And I will be like, ‘Even my mum can’t even stop me. That is my life. Do you know how many years it took me?’

“He [my ex-husband] was in support of me. He doesn’t even stress me but because of the whole saga, it was like I was in a place where the people didn’t even understand my vision. They don’t understand what I’m chasing. You need to chase it with me. This is what your wife wants. You can’t kill my dream. This is what I’ve worked for so many years to get here. So, you can’t just wake up and say, “Because you want to marry me, give up on my dreams.”

Why State governors sacked by court so far and reasons given so far..

Since the completion of the 2023 general elections, attention has shifted to the courts that are deciding the petitions arising from the elections. In this piece, Okiki Adeduyite looks at the state governors so far sacked by courts and why they were sacked.

In a judgment on Sunday, the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Elphreda Williams-Dawodu, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return given to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.

The court declared Nentawe Goshwe of the All Progressives Congress the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election, ordering INEC to issue a new Certificate of Return to him.

Courts  have sacked at least three governors whose elections were contested by opposing parties and deemed one election inconclusive, barely nine months after the elections.

The following is a list of sacked state governors and the grounds given by the court:

  • Abba Kabir Yusuf (NNPP)

The NNPP received 1,019,602 votes to defeat the APC, whose candidate, Nasir Gawuna, received 890,705 votes, according to INEC. As a result, the NNPP candidate won by a margin of 128,897 votes.

The Election Petitions Tribunal, under the leadership of Justice Oluyemi Osadebay, invalidated the election of Governor Yusuf. The tribunal made this decision by declaring  165,663 votes, garnered by  Yusuf invalid.

The ballot papers for the 165,663 votes were not signed or stamped, according to the judge, and thus were invalid.

The court ordered that Yusuf’s certificate of return be revoked and that a fresh one be issued to Gawuna.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja also upheld the tribunal’s decision.

The three-member panel, led by Justice M.A Adumeh, determined that Yusuf was not on his political party’s membership list.

He stated that a party must hold the names of its registered members in both hard and soft copies, citing a clause of the Electoral Act.

The judge stated that the tribunal erred in failing to disqualify Yusuf in its ruling.

“The tribunal was wrong not to have disqualified him. The failure to comply with Section 177(c) is fatal to their election. . Where a party carelessly nominates a candidate such is a nullity irrespective of whether he performs well. Sponsorship without membership is like putting nothing on something, it cannot stand. This is a clear example of acting with brazen impunity as if the Constitution is not binding,” he held.

Yusuf has, however, vowed to reclaim his mandate at the Supreme Court.

  • Abdullahi Sule (APC)

The Nasarawa State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sacked the state governor,  Abdullahi Sule, in October and ordered INEC to revoke his Certificate of Return and give it to David Ombugadu of the PDP.

Ombugadu had taken Sule to court to contest INEC’s announcement of Sule as the winner of the election.

He told the tribunal that his actual votes were unfairly lowered while  Sule of the APC’s votes were boosted to help him win, notably in the EC8Bs of Gayam and Chiroma Wards of Lafia Local Government Area.

The tribunal, led by Justice Ezekiel Ajayi, in its decision deducted the incorrect votes added to Sule and added back the votes which were reduced from the overall votes of David Ombugadu. This decision was based on the certified copies of the polling units results (forms EC8A) that were presented by the petitioners.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, November 15, reserved  judgment on the appeal.

  • Dauda Lawal (PDP)

INEC had declared Dauda Lawal of the PDP as the winner of the Zamfara State governorship election, defeating the incumbent governor, Bello Matawalle of the APC.

Matawalle had filed a case with the tribunal contesting the results of the governorship election on March 18, but it was dismissed due to lack of merit.

The Court of Appeal issued its decision on Thursday, November 16, declaring the election inconclusive and ordering INEC to hold new elections in two local governments.

According to the appellate court, Matawalle, who is currently the Minister of State for Defence, was able to establish Lawal’s invalid election.

The governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, said his legal team was reviewing the judgment before taking the next necessary action.

  • Caleb Mutfwang (PDP)

Nentawe Goshwe of the APC challenged the victory of Caleb Mutfwang at the tribunal, claiming that the governor was not validly nominated and sponsored by his party.

A three-member panel of the tribunal headed by Justice R. Irele-Ifijeh, in a unanimous decision, dismissed the petition of Goshwe for lacking merit.

The three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu ruled on Sunday, November 19, that the governor was not legitimately sponsored by the PDP for the election, citing Section 177 of the Constitution.

The judge pointed out that the PDP failed to adhere to a standing High Court order, which mandated the party to organise a legitimate party congress before endorsing candidates for the governorship and other positions.

Mutfwang, who has directed his legal team to submit an appeal with the Supreme Court, expressed hope that the mandate bestowed upon him by the people of the state would be reinstated.

See the world’s most expensive Scotch whisky bottle at $2.7M

The world’s “most sought-after” bottle of Scotch whisky sold for a record $2.7 million on Saturday, November 18, breaking a record previously set by another bottle from the same cask, according to Sotheby’s—the latest spirit to receive bids exceeding millions of dollars in recent years.

The Macallan Adami 1926 sold for nearly 2.2 million pounds at Sotheby’s auction in London, according to the auction house, which noted the three previous auction records for any bottle of wine or spirit were broken by bottles from the same cask between 2018 and 2019.
The previous record was set in 2019, after a Macallan 1926 sold for 1.5 million pounds ($1.8 million).

Sotheby’s—which referred to the bottle as the “world’s most expensive whisky” estimated the bottle would auction between $700,000 and $1.2 million, the highest estimate ever placed on a bottle of wine or spirit by the auction house.

Only 40 bottles of the Macallan 1926 were bottled in 1986 after being aged in sherry casks for 60 years, according to Sotheby’s, and 12, including the bottle sold on Saturday, November 18 featured labels designed by the Italian painter Valerio Adami.

Rare Scotch whisky becomes world

The bottle sold on Saturday was the first to be reconditioned by Macallan’s distillery, Sotheby’s said, a process that replaced both the bottle’s capsule and cork while new glue was applied to the corners of the bottle’s labels.

Kirsteen Campbell, a whisky maker for Macallan, said the bottle contained notes of “rich dark fruits, black cherry compote alongside sticky dates, followed by intense sweet antique oak,” according to the Associated Press.

Other bottles of the Macallan 1926 have been purchased in recent years. One bottle was sold in 2018, becoming the first bottle of whisky to surpass one million pounds, according to Sotheby’s. Two bottles were sold from the Dubai Airport in April 2018 for $600,000 each. Two other bottles were sold for $1 million and $1.1 million in Hong Kong earlier this month.

Another bottle of Macallan was sold by Sotheby’s for nearly $1 million in 2017, in addition to a 64-year-old bottle that sold for $460,000 in 2012. The world’s largest bottle of whisky, an 82-gallon bottle of 1989 Macallan, sold for $1.4 million at auction last year. A rare cask of Macallan whisky that was left at the Scottish distillery’s warehouse for over three decades also sold for $1.3 million last year, breaking the previous auction record for a whisky cask.

Over 650 houses to be demolished in Festac over contravention

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has disclosed plans to completely demolish 677 houses, while 744 others will be partially demolished over infringement by a developer in Phase 2, Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.

FHA’s South-West Zonal Manager, Mr. Akintola Olagbemiro, disclosed this during a visit to the affected area to assess level of disregard to building codes and the environment.

According to Olagbemiro, despite letters and stakeholders’ meetings, the developers have continued to build on the swampy land without meeting the requirements.

He said: “After so many years of trying to get into the property belonging to FHA, which we labelled as Festac Phase 2. There has been encroachment and illegal development and it’s turning the place into a slum. We are trying to see how best we can resolve it and make people live in a more serene environment. Unfortunately, there have been cases of illegal developers and land grabbers.”

Deputy General Manager, FHA, Urban and Regional Planning, Southwest, Francisca Michael-James, said: “We have given the residents several notices but to our surprise, works are still going on, without regard to the law.

“Now we have the permission of our management and we will ask for security back up and start enforcement. We will start removing structures from the roads and those on pipelines set back.

“We will also remove the buildings constructed after the stakeholders’ meetings where we agreed that everyone should wait until we are done with our assessment but some of them continued to build and concluded that we will regularise, but regularisation is not automatic. Now, the ones that did not meet regularisation will have to go.”

Speaking on punishment for contravenors, she said: “In the law, if we demolish, we are supposed to penalise the owner of the building and charge for the fees for the cost of carrying out the operation. Assuming any of the buildings collapsed, the landlord will be charged for manslaughter but the first point of call will be pointing accusing fingers at the agency so, as to avoid that, that’s why we want to carry out the enforcement. The enforcement will be done soon.

“The first thing we are doing is to clear the road; some of the buildings will be partially demolished for right of way. 677 houses will be demolished and 744 will be demolished partially.”

Naira’s values increases, lures investors

Amid the appreciation of the naira against the dollar on the parallel market, Nigeria is on the radar of foreign investors once again after a seeming slowdown in reforms initially saw them grow cold feet towards West Africa’s biggest economy.

That’s after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is finally allowing a rise in market interest rates to match inflation and has begun to clear the foreign exchange backlog that has drained confidence in broader FX reforms.

The one-year OMO bill for instance sold for 21 percent at the last auction, double last year’s return (12 percent in December 2022) and also higher than the 17 percent yield at the first auction of this year which happened in August, according to data from the CBN.

The yield on the one-year Treasury bill has also doubled to 13.5 percent from 6.2 percent when compared to the month of June when President Bola Tinubu assumed office.

The rise in market rates is making Nigeria attractive again, according to American bank, JP Morgan.

“The naira now ranks highest on our risk-reward scorecard due to elevated carry, however we remain on the sidelines waiting for better line of sight on FX inflows and more consistent liquidity tightening measures,” Ayomide Mejabi, an emerging markets strategist at JP Morgan, said in a note to clients.

The rates are likely to rise even further, with the country’s headline inflation at an 18-year high of 26.7 percent as at September.

“T-bill and bond rates have risen, but we see scope for further upward adjustments. We expect authorities to maintain some willingness for a somewhat flexible exchange rate (at least relative to recent years),” Mejabi said.

The large backlog of unmet FX demand, which has cast a pall on the reforms in Nigeria, is also being resolved as the CBN cleared a part of it last week.

The naira has strengthened to 970 per dollar on the black market from as low as 1,300/$ a week earlier, following some positive sentiments around the government’s plans to shore up dollar liquidity in the FX market.

BusinessDay learnt that the appreciation of the naira against the dollar on the streets has prompted speculators hoarding greenbacks to sell to avoid losing money.

“There are enough dollars in the market now. People are now bringing out dollars. Dollar rate will fall further next week,” Abubakar Ibrahim, a black market operator, said on Friday.

The CBN has cleared outstanding matured FX forwards owed to some banks including Citigroup, Standard Chartered, and Stanbic IBTC, in a boost to investor sentiment. The local banks have not been fully settled but sources close to the presidency say they are next in line.

Nigeria hopes to secure around $10 billion of new inflows to clear the outstanding FX backlog.

“The CBN is clearing only forwards to banks. I understand that it’s done for Citi and two other international banks. I believe that their swap positions with the CBN are much smaller than what they have with the local banks such as Access, Zenith and UBA,” Tunde Abidoye, analyst at FBNQuest.

The country’s FX reserves rose to $33.39 billion on October 31 from $33.22 billion at the beginning of the month, according to data from the central bank.

Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the CBN), has reiterated that under his leadership, the apex bank will focus mainly on the core mandate of achieving price stability.

“At the end of our tenure, we want to look back and see that our policies have positively impacted people’s lives,” Cardoso said.

Yemi Kale, partner and chief economist at KPMG Nigeria, attributed naira appreciation, FX reserves accretion and the reduction in FX backlog to inflows from oil swap agreements, sales and loans.

“The government has told us the steps they are taking to improve liquidity. They talked about NNPC, swap or forward sales, which were to bring about $3 billion; recently they talked about $10 billion expected into the economy.

“So, it is possible that some of those things have started to trickle in and just as they said, their priority is clearing of the backlog in order to begin to restore confidence in the system. I think that is what is happening,” Muda Yusuf, chief executive officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, said.

He said the clearing of the FX backlog is already reflecting on the liquidity in the market and investor confidence.

He said: “So, what we need to hope for is sustainability. If they can progressively clear the backlog, that level of confidence will be sustained. If there are expectations that the dollar will continue to go down, then the speculative effect of the demand will also begin to decline so that those who have money will quickly begin to offload it.

“If people expect that the dollar will go down further, based on what they are seeing, it will continue to go down so those who are speculating will also begin to offload it so that they do not lose money and that will continue to improve the liquidity.

“If all the things they said about forward sales, the liquidity from the $10 billion begin to happen, we can gradually make some progress in terms of restoring confidence and sustaining stability in the market.”

Wale Edun, the finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy, said on October 23 the country was expecting as much as $10 billion in new foreign currency inflows in the next few weeks to ease acute dollar shortages in the FX market.

Okikioluwa Oladipo-Ajilore, global markets associate at Parthian Partners said: “As of October 2023, Nigeria’s external reserve stood at $33.34 billion, coming from $33.25 billion in September 2023. This is not a significant increase; however, we attribute this to the improvement in the crude oil prices alongside volume produced during the period.

“On the back of the CBN clearing the FX backlogs, we have witnessed an appreciation in the naira due to improved dollar supply in the system. Though this backlog has not been fully cleared, we hold that its sustainability would be a factor of whether this recent trajectory of inflows from FPIs and other actions that have grown the optimism in the space are maintained.”

Israeli airstrikes level apartments, as ground forces battle Hamas militants in Gaza

A barrage of Israeli airstrikes leveled apartment buildings in a refugee camp near Gaza City on Tuesday, with rescuers clawing through the destruction to pull men, women and children from the rubble. Israel said the strike, which targeted a senior Hamas military leader, destroyed a militant command center and an underground tunnel network.

The toll from the attack in the Jabaliya camp was not immediately known. The director of the nearby hospital where casualties were taken, Dr. Atef Al-Kahlot, said hundreds of people were wounded or killed, but he did not provide exact figures.

The Israeli military said dozens of militants were killed, including a key Hamas commander for northern Gaza.

Israel aggressively defended the attack, with military spokesman Jonathan Conricus saying the targeted commander had also been a key planner of the bloody Oct. 7 rampage that started the war, and that the apartment buildings collapsed only because the vast underground Hamas complex had been destroyed.

Watchdog group says attack that killed videographer ‘explicitly targeted’ Lebanon journalists

Neither side’s account could be independently confirmed.

Early Wednesday, the Palestinian telecoms company Paltel reported a “complete disruption” of internet and mobile phone services in Gaza, marking the second time in five days that Gaza residents were largely cut off from the world.

Communications were previously cut off late Friday until early Sunday, coinciding with the entry of large numbers of ground troops into Gaza as Israel said it was beginning a new stage in the war. Attempts to reach Gaza residents by phone were unsuccessful early Wednesday.

Humanitarian aid agencies have warned that such blackouts severely disrupt their work in an already dire situation in Gaza.

Several hundred thousand Palestinians remain in northern Gaza in the path of the ground assault. They have crowded into homes or are packed by the thousands into hospitals that are already overwhelmed with patients and running low on supplies.

The strike in Jabaliya underlined the anticipated surge in casualties on both sides as Israeli troops battling Hamas militants advance deeper into the northern Gaza Strip toward dense, residential neighborhoods. Israel has vowed to crush Hamas’ ability to govern Gaza or threaten Israel following the Oct. 7 assault, which ignited the war. Hamas, an Islamic militant group, openly calls for the destruction of Israel.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed Wednesday that nine more soldiers were killed in fighting in northern Gaza, bringing the total of military casualties since the start of the ground operation to 11.

In the Jabaliya refugee camp, a densely built-up area of small streets on Gaza City’s outskirts, dozens of rescuers searched for survivors amid a series of obliterated buildings and others that had partially collapsed.

Young men carried the limp forms of two children from the upper floors of the crumbling frame of one damaged apartment building, while helping down another child and woman. It was unclear whether the children were alive or dead. Gray dust, apparently left by pulverized concrete, seemed to coat nearly everything.

The Israeli military said it carried out a wide-scale strike in Jabaliya on Hamas infrastructure “that had taken over civilian buildings.”

Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari said an underground Hamas installation beneath a targeted building collapsed, toppling other nearby buildings. Conricus later said the main strike had hit between buildings.

“We don’t intend for the ground to collapse,” he told reporters. “But the issue is that Hamas built their tunnels there and that they’re running their operations from there.”

He said the commander killed in the strike, Ibrahim Biari, played an important role in the Oct. 7 attack and had been involved in anti-Israeli attacks going back decades.

Also on Tuesday, the Israeli military said ground troops took control of a Hamas military stronghold in west Jabaliya, killing 50 militants.

Hagari repeated calls for civilians to evacuate northern Gaza to the south. The military says it targets Hamas fighters and infrastructure and that the militants endanger civilians by operating among them. The military has also repeatedly emphasized it will strike Hamas wherever it finds it.

Some 800,000 Palestinians have reportedly fled to the south, but many have not, in part because they say nowhere is safe as Israeli airstrikes in the south have continued to cause civilian deaths. The window to flee may be closing, as Israeli forces reached Gaza’s main north-south highway this week.

More than 8,500 Palestinians have been killed in the war, mostly women and minors, the Gaza Health Ministry said Tuesday, without providing a breakdown between civilians and fighters. The figure is without precedent in decades of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ initial attack, also an unprecedented figure. Palestinian militants also abducted around 240 people during their incursion and have continued firing rockets into Israel.

A day after Israel’s first successful rescue of a Hamas captive, the spokesman of the militant group’s armed wing said they plan to release some non-Israeli hostages in coming days. Hamas has previously released four hostages, and has said it would let the others go in return for thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, which has dismissed the offer.

More than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians have fled their homes, with hundreds of thousands sheltering in packed U.N.-run schools-turned-shelters or at hospitals.

The war has also threatened to ignite fighting on other fronts. Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group have traded fire daily along the border, and Israel and the U.S. have struck targets in Syria linked to Iran, which supports Hamas, Hezbollah and other armed groups in the region.

Some 200,000 people have been evacuated from Israeli towns near Gaza and the northern border with Lebanon.

The military said it shot down what appeared to be a drone near the southernmost city of Eilat and intercepted a missile over the Red Sea on Tuesday, neither of which entered Israeli airspace.

Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen later claimed they fired ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, saying it was their third such operation and threatening more. Earlier this month, a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Red Sea intercepted missiles and drones launched toward Israel by the Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen.

In the occupied West Bank, where Israeli-Palestinian violence has also surged, the army demolished the family home of Saleh al-Arouri, a senior Hamas official exiled over a decade ago. An official in the village of Aroura said the home had been vacant for 15 years.

Israeli forces reportedly have advanced north and east of Gaza City. South of the city, Israeli troops were also trying to cut off the territory’s main highway and the parallel road along the Mediterranean coast, according to Dawood Shehab, a spokesperson for Islamic Jihad, a smaller militant group allied with Hamas.

Zaki Abdel-Hay, a Palestinian living a few minutes’ walk from the road south of Gaza City, said people are afraid to use it. “People are very scared. The Israeli tanks are still close,” he said over the phone, adding that “constant artillery fire” could be heard near the road.

The Israeli military said it struck some 300 militant targets over the past day, including compounds inside tunnels, and that troops had engaged in several battles with militants armed with antitank missiles and machine guns.

Gaza’s humanitarian crisis continued to worsen.

The World Health Organization said two hospitals were damaged and an ambulance destroyed in Gaza over the last two days. It said all 13 hospitals operating in the north have received Israeli evacuation orders in recent days. Medics have refused such orders, saying it would be a death sentence for patients on life support.

Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, the largest in the territory, is on the verge of running out of fuel, the Health Ministry said.

There has been no central electricity in Gaza for weeks, and Israel has barred the entry of fuel needed to power generators for hospitals and homes, saying it wants to prevent it from falling into Hamas’ hands.

It has allowed a limited amount of food, water, medicine and other supplies to enter from Egypt, though far less than what is needed, relief groups say. A convoy of 59 aid trucks entered through the Rafah Crossing with Egypt on Tuesday — the largest yet — bringing the total that have entered since Oct. 22 to 216, according to Wael Abu Omar, Hamas’ spokesperson for the crossing.

The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, says 64 of its staff have been killed since the start of the war.

The article “Israeli airstrikes crush apartments in Gaza refugee camp, as ground troops battle Hamas militants” was originally published by Associated Press.

Nigerian nurse fired in UK for praying for end-of-life patient

A Nigerian nurse who newly arrived in the United Kingdom has reportedly been sacked for praying for a 95-year-old patient under her care.

The news was broken on social media by a Nigerian nurse, Rakel Morenike, who has practised in the UK for more than 10 years.

Morenike said the nurse who newly arrived in the UK was on her first job when she was given a shift in the end-of-life ward.

According to Morenike, the nurse entered the patient’s room and began to pray that she would not die and that the prognosis of the doctors would not come to pass.

The elderly patient was said to have reported the incident to her daughter who came over to the facility to speak with the Nigerian nurse’s supervisor.

They reportedly asked the elderly patient to identify her and she did, repeating what she did.

Morenike said the Nigerian nurse was accused of lack of professionalism and sacked.

She counselled that those coming into the country should try and get the necessary information that will enable them to function without running foul of the country’s norms.

Morenike said while there is nothing wrong with prayer, the consent of the person to be prayed for must be sought to avoid trouble.

She explained that there is a massive cultural difference between Nigeria and the UK. Over there, many people in the end-of-life stage have lost their will to live and only counting down to their departure and would be offended by anyone offering them false hopes.

Lady, 28, shoots boyfriend dead over rough sexual encounter

A South African woman has admitted to shooting her boyfriend dead in his sleep in vengeance for subjecting her to ‘rough sex’.

Zanele Mkhonto, 28, who will remain in custody for the premeditated murder charges, allegedly shot and killed her boyfriend and police officer Happy Thwala (45) on the night of 2 August 2022 in Gedlembane in Pienaar, Mpumalanga.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Monica Nyuswa revealed that the couple got into a fight after Zanele’s ex-boyfriend called her.

Nyuswa said, “It is alleged that Thwala became angry, broke down and cried while threatening to shoot and kill Mkhonto. She managed to calm him down, and he gave her the gun, and they went on to have intercourse.”

However, Happy took out her anger for the earlier incident on his girlfriend during s3x and rode her very roughly, hurting her in the process.

Zanele was deeply enraged by this but remained mum until they were done. After Happy had fallen asleep, Zanele quietly took out the gun and shot him dead.

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Nelspruit took the case up and looked into it. They found evidence linking Mkhonto to the murder and nabbed her on 10 August 2022. On the same day, she appeared at Kanyamazane Magistrates Court and the police held her in custody.

Zanele received Legal Aid but faced multiple court battles to get bail, which the Magistrates Court resultantly denied. She has been in custody since. The court postponed the case to 27 November 2023 for a pre-sentence report in the High Court.

Over 10 people die of heart attacks after taking part in traditional garba dance in India

At least 10 people, including a boy of 13, have died from heart attacks after taking part in the traditional garba dances in India’s western state of Gujarat, local media reported on Monday, October 23.

Garba is a high-energy traditional Gujarati dance performed during the nine-day Hindu festival of Navaratri to celebrate the goddess Durga.

The casualties ranged from teenagers to middle-aged people, with the youngest being a 13-year-old boy from Vadodara’s Dabhoi district.

According to News18, the high number of heart attack deaths may be due to pre-existing medical illnesses, prolonged fasting, poor eating habits, and ignorance about prevalence of heart health issues in India.

The deaths, which occurred in the space of 24 hours, have once again raised questions about the general health of Indians and their susceptibility to cardiac problems.

The youngest fatality, 13-year-old Vaibhav Soni, reportedly fell off his cycle while returning from a garba event in Vadodara district on Saturday and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was discharged after some tests, but complained of chest pain after being taken home.

His family said they sent him to bed after giving him medicine but became alarmed when he did not wake up after several hours. He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead from a heart attack

Another teenage fatality was Veer Shah, 17, who reported feeling unwell and suffered a nosebleed while dancing the garba in Kheda district on Saturday night.

He was rushed to a hospital where he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Similar deaths were reported in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Navsari, and Rajkot districts.

Authorities said ambulance services received more than 500 calls related to heart problems over 24 hours in which the deaths were reported, and about 600 calls about people experiencing breathlessness during the first six days of the festival which began on October 15 this year.

The state government on Sunday asked garba organisers to ensure that ambulances were available and ordered community health centres near garba venues to be on high alert.

Cardiologist Anurag Mehrotra said the heart attacks suffered by the teenage garba dancers could be the result of a lack of exercise among Indian youth.

“If you do something that you are not accustomed to and you are exposed to that sort of exercise, these incidents occur,” Dr Mehrotra, head of the cardiology department at Siddh Hospital in Uttar Pradesh state, told the NDTV news channel.

Vladimir Putin ‘revived’ after ‘cardiac arrest’ in bedroom

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening, months after speculations over his health.

Telegram channel, General SVR, suggests that all recent appearances by the Russian President, including foreign visits, have been carried out by a body double or doubles. It claimed that doctors had to resuscitate Putin before taking him to a special intensive care facility located within his official residence.

The channel reported;
“At about 21:05 Moscow time, security officers of Russian President Vladmir Putin who were on duty at the residence, heard noise and sounds of falling coming from the president’s bedroom. Two security officers immediately followed into the president’s bedroom and saw Putin lying on the floor next to the bed and an overturned table with food and drinks.

“Probably, when the president fell, he hit the table and dishes and knocked them onto the floor, which caused the noise. Putin convulsively arched while lying on the floor, rolling his eyes. The doctors who were on duty at the residence and located in one of the adjacent rooms were immediately called.

“Doctors performed resuscitation, having previously determined that the president was in cardiac arrest. Help was provided on time, the heart was started and Putin regained consciousness.

“The president was moved to a specially equipped room in his residence, where the necessary medical equipment for resuscitation had already been installed.

“We have already repeatedly talked about the deterioration of Putin’s health due to oncology and a number of other diseases. This case of cardiac arrest seriously alarmed the president’s inner circle, despite the fact that the attending doctors had already warned that Putin was very ill and was unlikely to live until the end of autumn.

“Recently, all official meetings and events have been conducted by the president’s double. After news of the evening incident, several people close to Putin contacted each other by telephone and agreed to hold consultations on Monday regarding possible actions if the president dies in the coming days.”

Adding weight to the claims, footage of an unexplained late-evening dash to the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power, by Putin’s motorcade on Sunday evening, have surfaced. The president normally resides outside of Moscow and not in his official apartment in the vast government building.

The channel is supposedly run by a former Kremlin lieutenant-general, known by the alias Viktor Mikhailovich. It claims his top apparatchiks and security henchmen control the activities of the doppelgängers. A recent Japanese TV report used AI to analyse Putin’s face, walk and voice in multiple appearances, and concluded that he does use body doubles.

Though there’s been no immediate response from the Kremlin over the claim, but officials have previously strongly denied that 71-year-old Putin suffers from health problems.

Female Isreali soldiers eliminate over 100 Hamas terrorists

Israeli Caracal Battalion commander Lt.-Col. Or Ben-Yehuda praised her unit for its bravery in the southern Gaza Strip, where the female troops took down approximately 100 Hamas terrorists, the Jerusalem Post reported.

After the fighting broke out Oct. 7 when Hamas invaded Israel, Ben-Yehuda said she received a message reporting an infiltration of heavily armed terrorists near Sufa and Nirim and told her soldiers, “We are going out to eliminate terrorists. Infiltration into Israel is happening, and it’s spreading.

“Stay alert. We might cross paths. We are a strong squad,” she told her unit as they headed to Sufa.

Combat between the female battalion and the terrorists lasted nearly four hours and included large firefights. It took the IDF about 14 hours altogether to secure the base.

The female soldiers under her command have continued to make significant contributions to the war effort, Ben-Yehuda said.

“There are no more doubts about female combat soldiers, who have triumphed in every encounter with terrorists,” New York Post quoted Ben-Yehuda as saying.

“At present, we are responsible for 11 towns and are preparing for any potential ground maneuvers to ensure the safety of the southern Gaza border area and the Egyptian border.”

Members of the female troop have saved countless lives through medical care or by bravely landing helicopters while under fire, too, Ben-Yehuda said.

The commander also acknowledged the tank soldiers under her command who played a vital role in defending towns, including in Holit, a kibbutz near the Gaza Strip where at least 11 of its members were killed along with two migrant workers.

At least 1,400 Israelis and 5,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, while tens of thousands on both sides have been injured or displaced from their homes due to the conflict, officials on both sides have said.

Hamas has more than 200 hostages detained in Gaza, according to new estimates from the IDF.

Sterling Bank gave a Customer fake Euros?

Sterling Bank has been caught in a nasty fake currency, precisely Euros, scandal after one of its customers accused the Bank of paying him fake five thousand Euros.

The customer, LegendaryPapi, took to his “X” (formerly Twitter) handle, @Dblinkz, to break the news on Tuesday, October 24.

According to LegendaryPapi, on January 24, 2023, he deposited the sum of 5000 euros to his domiciliary account at the Kaduna branch of Sterling Bank.

On May 30, 2023, he went to the bank’s branch he initially deposited the money and was told that they didn’t have the complete 5000.

He went to the main branch to withdraw the 5000 Euros meant to be part payment for his school fees and was paid in 500 Euros denomination.

To his chagrin, however, his friend who was going back to the United Kingdom and was to help change the Euros to Pounds could not as the money was seized after it was discovered to be counterfeit.

The highly aggrieved customer, therefore, described bankers as “armed robbers without guns working in our banking system”.

See pictures of the said Euros below:

Narrating his ordeal, LegendaryPapi wrote:

“Ooh Nigeria has happened to me. I’m writing this with so much despair.

“I went to the branch I initially deposited the money and they told me they didn’t have the complete 5,000; that I should collect 3,000 from them and go to their main branch to collect the rest.

“I refused because they were going to charge me separately for the different withdrawal I.E service charges. I then went to the main branch to withdraw the 5,000 Euros.

“I was given 500 Euros denomination, the purpose of withdrawing the money was to give to my friend who was going back to the United Kingdom to help me change it to pounds as I was making part payment for my school fees, only for him to go and the money was seized as it was discovered to be counterfeit.

“I have been patiently waiting for @Sterling_Bankng, @suleimana, to rectify this and return my hard-earned money but they are dragging their feet.

“POV the serial numbers had been confirmed to be same with what the bank has in their possession, @eurochangeFX has sent a confirmation letter with their letterhead to proof that the money was fake!!!”

Israel kills Hamas elite commander, Qadi

Ali Qadi, an elite commander of Hamas terrorist group, has been eliminated by Israeli airstrike.

Israeli military authorities said that Qadi led a unit of commando forces that killed civilians in last week’s attack on southern Israel.

“Aircraft killed Ali Qadi, a company commander of the Hamas ‘Nukhba’ (elite) commando force,” a statement by the Israeli army said on Saturday without specifying the location or timing of the strike.

Though, a Hamas official told AFP the Palestinian group had “no comment” concerning the Israeli claim.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed Qadi, 37, was a unit commander in the elite Hamas force.

Both the Palestinian official and the Israeli military statement said Qadi was one of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel in 2011 in exchange for a soldier, Gilad Shalit, captured by Hamas in 2006.

Qadi was arrested by Israel in 2005 over the kidnapping and murder of an Israeli man who media reports at the time identified as a broker for the Shin Bet internal security agency.

Hamas fighters who broke through the militarised security barrier around the besieged Gaza on October 7 caused the death of over 1,300 individuals in southern Israel.

Subsequently, Israel responded with a bombardment, killing at least 2,215 people in Gaza.

Teen boy buries stepbrother alive in Kogi State

Police in Kogi have arrested the stepmother of the 11-year-old boy buried alive on Wednesday by the woman’s 17-year-old son.

Police spokesman in Kogi, SP Williams Ovye-Aya said in Lokoja that the woman was arrested on Thursday soon as she returned from the church.

Passers-by rescued the 11-year-old on Wednesday after he had been buried by his stepbrother in a bush at Silo community in Zango Daji, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi.

The 11-year-old boy was alleged to have stolen N10,000 belonging to his stepmother who instructed her son to punish the suspect before heading to church.

In meting punishment to the 11-year-old, the 17-year-old took his stepbrother into the bush where he buried him alive, throwing the entire Kogi into bewilderment.

Police immediately arrested the 17-year-old.

“Our officers and men were able to arrest the stepmother on Thursday after a tip off. She is now in our custody.

“She has made a statement to the police on the sad incident.

“We shall transfer the mother and son to the Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation of reasons behind such cruelty among family members.

“It is unfortunate that the father or bread winner of the family was said to have travelled. We are waiting for him to return to give us his own statement.

“Once investigation is concluded, we shall arraign mother and son,’’ Mr Ovye-Aya said.

Meanwhile the Kogi government has vowed to prosecute the 17-year-old boy and the mother.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Fatima Buba made vowed on Thursday in Lokoja when she spoke with newsmen over the incident.

Mrs Buba described the incident as “very wicked’’ and “saddening’’ and assured that the ministry was in constant liaison with the police for the immediate prosecution of the mother and son.

“While the ministry is liaising with the police for their prosecution, necessary arrangements had been made to put the 11-year-old boy in an orphanage home.

“Our findings indicate that the boy is regularly maltreated by his stepmother and stepbrother.

“As a government we will ensure that justice is served on all the perpetrators of evil acts in Kogi,’’ she said.

Mr Buba warned guardians fond of inhuman treatment of their wards to desist or face the full wrath of the law.

Israel orders all civilains to leave Gaza in 24 hours ahead of bloody ground invasion and missile barrage

Israel’s military has ordered more than 1 million people to evacuate Gaza as they prepare to unleash their troops into Palestine.

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to crush Hamas terrorists after gunmen stormed over the border and brutally murdered men, women and children.

Israel’s military has been massing 360,000 soldiers on the border as it gets ready to start a huge ground offensive.

As the bloody war rages into its seventh day, Israel on Friday, October 13 told those living in Gaza City to flee their homes as the war-torn country aims to eradicate Hamas in revenge for its attacks.

In a hint the expected invasion is imminent, the IDF warned in a statement: “This evacuation is for your own safety.”

It added that Hamas militants are hiding inside tunnels underneath the city and inside buildings where citizens live. Israel said Palestinians should leave north of Wadi Gaza including Gaza City for the south within 24 hours.

The IDF said: “In the following days, the IDF will continue to operate significantly in Gaza City and make extensive efforts to avoid harming civilians.”

But Hamas called on Palestinians to stay in their homes as it dismissed the orders by Israel as “fake propaganda”.

Gaza has a population of 2.3 million people.

The order by Israel sent panic rippling through civilians and workers already struggling following Israeli airstrikes and a blockade.

Inas Hamdan, an officer at the UN Palestinian refugee agency in Gaza City, said: “This is chaos, no one understands what to do.”

Nebal Farsakh, a spokesman for the Palestinian Red Crescent in Gaza City, said there was no way more than one million people could be safely moved that fast.

She said: “Forget about food, forget about electricity, forget about fuel.

“The only concern now is just if you’re going to make it, if you’re going to live.

“What will happen to our patients? We have wounded, we have elderly, we have children who are in hospitals.”

Israel halted all deliveries of food, water, fuel and medicine to the tiny enclave after Hamas launched its assault on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Gaza’s only power station ran out of fuel and shut down – leaving only lights powered by private generators.

Russian Govt. to build Nuclear Power Plant in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso’s military leaders have signed a deal with Russia to build a nuclear power plant to increase electricity supplies.

“The government of Burkina Faso has signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a nuclear power plant,” the government said in a statement.

The agreement was signed at the Russian Energy Week in Moscow, which was attended by Burkina Faso’s energy minister Simon-Pierre Boussim.

The document “fulfills the wish of the president of [Burkina] Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, expressed [in] July at the Russia-Africa summit during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin,” the statement said.

Russia’s state atomic energy agency Rosatom said in its own statement that “the memorandum is the first document in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy between Russia and Burkina Faso.”

The nuclear power plant will enable the country to meet its energy needs, it said, adding that the agreement was signed by energy and mines minister Simon-Pierre Boussim, and Nikolay Spasskiy, Rosatom’s deputy director general.

The deal signed on Friday, follows a request made by Burkina Faso junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg in July.

Traore, who sized power in a military coup in September 2022, has moved closer to Russia as its relationship with its former colonial power France sours, while Russia has move to break Western isolation over the Ukraine conflict and expand its influence in Africa.

‘Young but Fake Kenyan Lawyer’ Who Won 26 Court Cases Arrested

A man posing as a lawyer in Kenya has sparked debate after winning 26 court cases before finally being arrested by authorities.

Brian Mwenda was apprehended for falsely presenting himself as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Photos show him dressed in legal robes and a wig while arguing cases across various courts.

According to local media, Mwenda successfully litigated cases before High Court judges, magistrates and Court of Appeal judges without being a certified lawyer. He had managed to avoid detection until his recent arrest.

The remarkable feat has fueled discussion on social media with many arguing Mwenda deserves a law license since he outperformed trained lawyers. Some questioned whether law school is necessary if he could win cases without it.

However, the Kenyan authorities maintain Mwenda committed a crime by practicing law illegally regardless of his court record. Local lawyers dismissed opinions that formal legal education is insignificant.

While amazed that Mwenda could win 26 consecutive cases, legal experts contend he exposed flaws in the legal system which failed to detect an impostor. The case has triggered debate on measuring real legal skills beyond just academic qualifications.

Meanwhile, the Central Organization of Trade Unions (Kenya), COTU (K), has thrown its support behind Brian Mwenda Njagi, the man who has gone viral for purporting to be an advocate of the High Court.

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli in a statement on Saturday said the organization recognizes Mwenda’s efforts in line with the principle of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) further pushing for a fair examination of his knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of law.

According to Atwoli, Mwenda whom the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has already ordered for his arrest should be accorded room to pursue his dream irrespective of academic qualifications.

“COTU (K) wishes to express its strong support for Brian Mwenda Njagi, a young and brilliant Kenyan who has recently faced condemnation for practising law without the traditional law qualifications,” stated Atwoli.

“If, indeed, it’s true that Brian has been practising law and successfully representing clients in legal matters, we strongly advocate for a fair and transparent examination to test his knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of law.”

Atwoli cites his leadership capacity and experience over the years to argue that many professionals have excelled in different fields without having any professional qualifications.

He therefore calls on the government to recognize the skills and talents of youths who have acquired expertise through informal education.

“As a seasoned labour leader, I can speak authoritatively that Brian’s case is not unique. I know of many great engineers, accountants, teachers, IT experts, cybersecurity experts, social workers, creatives, footballers, farmers, immigrants, plumbers, carpenters, and paramedics who are specialists in their areas of interest yet without any paper to show their qualifications,” he stated.

Atwoli added: “COTU (K) calls upon the government of Kenya to take this opportunity to actualize Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in Kenya. RPL is a proven mechanism for recognizing the diverse learning pathways of our citizens and for harnessing the untapped talents that can drive our nation forward. “

The remarks by COTU follow similar pronouncements by the Kenya Universities Students’ Organization (KUSO) which has since claimed that Mwenda is a second-year student at Chuka University pursuing a Criminology course.

KUSO said: “It’s unfortunate that LSK denounced & publicly distanced themselves from BRIAN MWENDA NJAGI aka ‘Mike Ross’ despite him raising the bar high for the Law Profession, fake or not. KUSO has established, allegedly, that he is a Second Year COMRADE from Chuka University Pursuing Criminology.”

“He is a true testimony of what hustling means. If your degree or course doesn’t make ends meet, it’s time to change goalposts.”

The LSK on Friday while calling for the DCI to launch a probe into the incidents revealed how Mwenda strategically breached the LSK security and stole the identity of an actual lawyer.

“We have invited the DCI to send their investigators to launch a massive manhunt and the immediate arrest of the masquerader, (Brian Mwenda) and all his accomplices. The Council of the Law Society recognizes that masqueraders pose a serious threat to the practice of law and is determined to take decisive action to deal with this issue, ” LSK said.

7 Key Discoveries From Tinubu’s Academic Records Released By Chicago State University

On Monday, social media went into overdrive after the Chicago State University released academic records of President Bola Tinubu following a court order.

Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s archrival in the 2023 presidential election had applied for the academic records in order to aid his appeal at the supreme court against the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the disputed election.

The release which was consistent with the court order revealed seven key facts, some consistent with Tinubu’s argument while some have left more questions than answers.

The first discovery is that Chicago State University validated one Bola A. Tinubu to have attended its university.

In the record studied by THE WHISTLER, the University through its Office of the Registrar affirmed that Bola A. Tinubu attended the university “from August 1977 through June 1979.”

The said Bola A. Tinubu was “awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Honors on June 22, 1979,” the school wrote in the documents released.

It’s inconsistent with another certificate Tinubu allegedly submitted to the electoral umpire that he studied accounting with 1st class honour from CSU.

The registrar also swore to this revelation under oath, which validated Tinubu’s claim that he was indeed a student in the school.

Secondly, the CSU released Tinubu’s college transcript which showed that the pre-qualification papers to the university belonged to a woman.

The university said Tinubu used a Southwest College transcript and was admitted to Chicago State University.

But the College transcript was marked ‘f’, denoting female while the Bola A. Tinubu, Nigerians know, is a ‘m’, male.

Again, a fundamental discovery from the College transcript showed date and social security number, SSN with the question being asked who the SSN belongs to.

Thirdly, Tinubu had submitted a CSU certificate to INEC in aid of his biodata when filing to contest the presidential election in 2022 and the one he submitted to the electoral umpire in 1999.

But the certificate the CSU released on Monday showed clear cases of inconsistencies as its redacted sample certificate it issued in 1979, the year Tinubu purportedly graduated from the school, had different fonts, logo, characters among others differences.

The fourth discovery from the CSU documents has shown the Bola A. Tinubu who applied to Southwest College for an associate degree in 1975 claimed to have attended Government College, Lagos.

To aid his admission, the Bola A. Tinubu presented a 1970 GCE A-level result with grades ‘E’ in Chemistry and Biology, and an ‘F’ in Physics.

Findings based on available records showed that Government College, Lagos, was established in 1974, which strengthened the argument from the president’s critics that there’s a case of forgery.

A careful study of the GCE A-level result raises another question as Bola A. Tinubu, who sat for the exam, did so as an HSC student.

It has been revealed that HSC used to be a two-year study after 5 years of secondary school education, meaning that the owner must have graduated from secondary school at least in 1968.

Fifth, Bola A. Tinubu’s Chicago State University admission letter was dated August 23, 1977. It was addressed to ‘Mr. Tinubu’ and not ‘Ms.’ or ‘Miss Tinubu’, raising another confusion why some other documents were marked ‘f’, female.

The sixth revelation from the records is that the Nigerian president claimed publicly that he was born on March 29, 1952, which is inconsistent with the birthday recorded in his CSU transcript, which showed he was born on March 29, 1954.

Curiously, the spaces for birthday in the Southwest College transcript and secondary education transcript he submitted to CSU were left blank.

A simple interrogation showed that if President Tinubu was born in 1954, he graduated from high school aged 14 years even though his camp had claimed he never attended secondary school and only sat for senior school certificate studying from home like the late Obafemi Awolowo, premier of western region.

The seventh inconsistency seen from the records released by CSU is the errors in the Bola A. Tinubu’s name. The Bola A. Tinubu’s last name was misspelt in several documents CSU released.

There was a ‘THUBV’, ‘Tinububu’, among other inconsistencies from the records released.

The CSU is expected by the Atiku camp to provide answers to these inconsistencies and the coming days may likely clear the air about a Nigerian president whose identity has been a subject of litigation and controversy since 1999.

Mohbad’s Death: There are pieces of evidence linking Naira Marley, Sam Larry with cyberbullying — Police

Lagos State police command says there are strong pieces of evidence linking Naira Marley and Sam Larry with cyberbullying, physical abuse, a threat to life, and assault against late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohba.

Mohbad died last month in a mysterious circumstances. While videos of the Afrobeats singer’s alleging bullying and assault resurfaced after his demise, many accused Naira Marley and Sam Larry of being complicit, a claim the duo have denied.

But in a briefing on Friday, the Lagos State Police Commissioner Idowu Owohunwa said there is evidence linking Naira Marley and Sam Larry of assault against Mohbad.

“While Abdulazeez Fashola (Naira Marley) and Samson Balogun (Sam Larry) denied allegations of criminal liability in the death of Mohbad and pleaded an alibi to justify their non-being complicit in the incident that occurred between 10-12 September 2023, there are ample electronic and credible witness pieces of evidence linking them to cyberbullying, a threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace against the deceased in his lifetime,” he said during the briefing.

Although the duo have been detained by the police, Commissioner Owohunwa named an auxiliary nurse Ms Feyisayo Ogedengbe as the prime suspect in Mohbad’s death.

“Five suspects have so far been identified, arrested, detained, and interrogated on their alleged roles in the sequence of events that led to the death of the singer,” he said.

According to him, Ogedengbe administered “multiple and highly potent” injections on Mohbad. He noted that the injections, consisting of Tetanus Toxoid, paracetamol, and Cetrazone — an antibiotic — were administered at the singer’s residence on September 12.

The commissioner said Ogedengbe was unqualified to perform the role of a home nurse and did so in a non-clinical environment way.

Full Speech: Atiku’s world press conference on Tinubu’s forged certificate

Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I consider it important to address and report to you today on issues that define the future of elective government and legitimate leadership in our country.

Political leadership and active citizenship matter because they are ways through which we all work together to build a country that works for all who live in it. Our country is bigger than any of us, and its standing in the world affects the fate of all who come from or live in it. As leaders, it is our duty to advance the well-being of all our people and of the country.

For this purpose, my generation worked hard to return the soldiers to the barracks and to defend the right of the people to elect and establish for ourselves a legitimate government. Our elections are established and governed by law and founded on the constitution from which leadership and government in Nigeria alone derive their legitimacy.

The people look up to us as leaders to respect these rules and, where necessary, to defend them. This is what brings us here.

Today, we are called upon again as a people to uphold and defend the ground rules of elective government in our country. The constitution prescribes the requirements for those who seek the highest elective office in the land.

It should not take months or, indeed, decades, for the institutions concerned to be able to do their work in establishing the credibility of any certificates presented by candidates for public office.

We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere.

I am a democrat by conviction and a citizen of a country that I love. The issues at stake in this case require us once more to re-dedicate ourselves to both the country and our constitution.

Now, we entrust these facts to us all as citizens and as leaders of the institutions charged with interpreting our constitution. I should thank the lawyers both in Nigeria and in the United States, who have assisted us in bringing clarity and definitive answers to these issues that appear to have defied our institutions for nearly a quarter of a century. I also want to extend my gratitude to Nigerian citizens and friends of Nigeria both within and beyond the shores of our country for their patience as we have sought to find the facts and establish the truth.

I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it.

Former American President Thomas Jefferson once said, “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter”. From exposing the Watergate scandal and unravelling the dubious certificates of politicians, journalists have maintained eternal vigilance by bridging the gap and stepping in when other arms of government failed.

It is for these reasons that commendation must be given to David Hundeyin, an independent journalist whose extraordinary work and those of many more young people like him has become a source of inspiration. Special thanks must be given to the millions of Nigerian youths and citizen journalists too who continue to put out the truth online even when no one is listening. Indeed, the price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance. They have put the country first in their firm commitment to unravel the truth and hold leaders accountable. This gives me the hope that we have worthy partners in the struggle to reclaim the country we call home.

This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs. In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for each and every one of us.

Thank you for listening. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
