A New Dawn in the Fight Against Boko Haram

In a decisive move towards strengthening regional security, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-SPC) has renewed the mandate of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to combat the Boko Haram insurgency for another 12 months. The decision, adopted during the council’s 1318th meeting on December 15, 2025, ensures the mission’s continuation from February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027, underscoring Africa’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin.

The MNJTF: A Regional Coalition Against Terror

The MNJTF, composed of military personnel from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria, has been a cornerstone of the regional response to Boko Haram since its establishment. Originally headquartered in N’Djamena, Chad, the force has coordinated counterinsurgency operations across the borders of the Lake Chad Basin (LCB), a region that has long suffered from the group’s brutality. Notably, Niger withdrew from the coalition in 2025, prompting reassessments of strategic collaborations and troop deployments.

The renewed mandate aligns with the broader Regional Strategy for Stabilisation, Recovery and Resilience 2.0, a revised framework aimed at addressing both the security and socioeconomic dimensions of the crisis. The AU’s decision reflects recognition of the MNJTF’s role in not only countering terrorism but also fostering long-term stability in the region.

Progress, Sacrifice, and Persistent Challenges

The AU-SPC’s decision highlights progress made in curbing Boko Haram’s influence, including the disruption of terror networks and the reintegration of displaced communities. Member states were commended for their “continued sacrifices and commitment,” with tributes paid to MNJTF personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. However, the council was unequivocal in condemning ongoing attacks, issuing a stern warning that perpetrators will face accountability.

Despite these strides, the MNJTF faces critical challenges, including funding shortfalls and capability gaps. Shortages of air and amphibious assets, as well as counter-drone and anti-IED (improvised explosive device) equipment, hinder operational effectiveness. The council called on member states and international partners to honor past financial pledges and provide urgent support as the force prepares for Operation Lake Sanity III, a new phase targeting Boko Haram’s infiltration and resource networks.

A Call for Unity and Global Solidarity

The AU has urged the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719—a recent framework for regional cooperation in West Africa—as a potential funding channel for the MNJTF. Enhanced cross-border intelligence sharing among LCB countries was also emphasized as key to preempting attacks and dismantling the group’s infrastructure.

Beyond security, the council addressed the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by climate change and conflict-driven displacement. Droughts, flooding, and population movement have strained resources, necessitating coordinated regional responses to address both immediate needs and systemic fragility. The AU reiterated its support for stabilization programs, urging harmonized action to restore hope to millions affected by the conflict.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Lasting Peace

As the MNJTF enters its next phase, the African Union reaffirmed its institutional commitment, directing the AU Commission and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to renew support agreements and implementation frameworks for the upcoming mandate. The council pledged to “remain actively seized of the matter,” signaling continued oversight and adaptability in the face of evolving threats.

The renewal of the MNJTF’s mandate is not just a political statement—it is a moral imperative. The people of the Lake Chad Basin deserve a future free from fear, and the collective resolve of regional and global actors will determine whether this vision becomes a reality. As the MNJTF advances Operation Lake Sanity III, the world watches, hopeful that unity, resilience, and sustained support will finally tip the scales in favor of peace.

In times of crisis, as in all other times, the strength of a region lies in the solidarity of its people. The African Union’s renewed commitment to the MNJTF sends a powerful message: the fight against terror is not a solitary battle, but a shared responsibility.
