A 48-year-old mother from Wales says her more than 800 tattoos have made it nearly impossible for her to find work.
Melissa Sloan, whose body and face are almost completely covered in tattoos, claims employers repeatedly reject her because of her appearance.
She says she even applied for a job cleaning public toilets, but was turned down because of her tattoos.
“I can’t get a job. I’m never hired. If someone offered me a job tomorrow, I’d take it immediately,” she said.
Melissa says she now relies on government benefits to support her family.
Her passion for tattoos continues, however. Instead of paying for new artwork, her partner Luke tattoos her at home every week, adding more designs to her collection.
The tattoos have also affected her personal life. Melissa says she has been excluded from family gatherings and religious celebrations and has even been denied entry to some of her children’s school events because of her appearance.
Although tattoos have become increasingly common in many countries, they can still be a barrier in professions that require a particular public image or strict appearance standards.
🤔 What do you think?
Should employers judge someone based on their skills and character alone, or can extreme body modifications reasonably influence hiring decisions?
