Milan, Italy – Inter Milan has reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, reaffirming their sole focus on bringing Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman to the San Siro as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
The Nerazzurri’s determination to land their primary target was underlined by their swift rejection of a potential deal for Nkunku, despite the Frenchman being offered to them by Chelsea. According to Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter president Beppe Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio were instrumental in dismissing the chance to sign the former RB Leipzig star, indicating their unwavering commitment to Ademola Lookman.
Inter has already made a significant move for the Nigeria international, tabling a bid of around €40 million for Lookman. However, Atalanta has proven resistant, holding out for a valuation closer to €50 million for their key attacker. The protracted negotiations led to suggestions that Inter might explore alternative options, with Chelsea reportedly putting Nkunku’s name forward.
Despite Nkunku’s proven quality, especially during his time in the Bundesliga, Inter’s hierarchy has clearly signaled that Lookman remains their top priority and that they would not consider an alternative for their desired attacking reinforcement. The 27-year-old Lookman has also reportedly indicated his strong desire to join the Milanese giants, further solidifying Inter’s pursuit.
Talks between Inter and Atalanta are expected to resume next week, as the two clubs continue to bridge the valuation gap for Lookman. The Nerazzurri are believed to be considering an improved offer to finally secure the services of the Nigerian forward, underscoring their strategic vision for the upcoming campaign and their refusal to deviate from their chosen path, even when presented with a high-profile alternative like Nkunku.
