TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN – At least eleven people were injured in a seemingly random stabbing attack at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday. A 42-year-old male suspect is now in custody following the incident that shocked the Midwestern community.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed at a press conference that the assault appeared to be a series of “random acts,” with victims “not predetermined.” The suspect, identified as a Michigan resident, reportedly acted alone and used a “folding knife” in the attack.
The victims, comprised of six men and five women, sustained varying degrees of injury. Munson Healthcare reported late Saturday that six victims were in critical condition, while five were in serious condition. Sheriff Shea also noted that at least three of the victims were undergoing surgery.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed the “horrible news,” stating she was in contact with law enforcement regarding the incident. In an X post, Governor Whitmer expressed, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
Authorities continue their investigation into the motive behind the unprovoked assault.
